Episode description

Today's exercise uses textures present in your environment, and then some from memory, to connect with the present if you are experiencing intense emotions, stress, isolation, or dissociation.

Then we will start this week's theme of anger to motivate us towards collective action.

Now onto the show.

12

00:00:36.660 --> 00:00:39.780

In today's episode we'll practice an exercise that

13

00:00:39.780 --> 00:00:43.980

uses differences in textures, both currently experienced ones

14

00:00:43.980 --> 00:00:48.120

and those from our real memories, to reconnect

15

00:00:48.120 --> 00:00:49.720

you to the present.

16

00:00:49.940 --> 00:00:53.360

Then we'll explore using anger as a motivator.

17

00:00:56.300 --> 00:00:58.400

Welcome to the Daily Reconnect.

18

00:00:58.680 --> 00:01:01.460

It's March 10th and I'm your host Janda

19

00:01:01.460 --> 00:01:01.740

Han.

20

00:01:01.860 --> 00:01:04.220

This short episode is designed to help you

21

00:01:04.220 --> 00:01:07.080

reconnect with the present when feeling detached or

22

00:01:07.080 --> 00:01:09.160

out of sync with the world around you.

23

00:01:09.380 --> 00:01:12.260

Together we'll re-engage with the wild chaos,

24

00:01:12.480 --> 00:01:15.600

our physical selves and our inner thoughts.

25

00:01:16.080 --> 00:01:18.400

Let's reconnect with what's real.

26

00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:26.420

After our exercise we'll find the energy to

27

00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:29.880

embrace our day and persist in the ongoing

28

00:01:29.880 --> 00:01:33.600

challenge that is modern existence.

29

00:01:34.140 --> 00:01:36.760

Use whatever resonates with you during this practice

30

00:01:36.760 --> 00:01:39.960

and just discard anything that doesn't feel right.

31

00:01:40.480 --> 00:01:42.760

You can adapt as we go along.

32

00:01:43.240 --> 00:01:46.900

This moment is yours to center and rebalance

33

00:01:46.900 --> 00:01:49.600

and that's what truly matters today.

34

00:01:50.060 --> 00:01:52.540

You can choose to use something physically from

35

00:01:52.540 --> 00:01:55.120

your space or you can visualize something if

36

00:01:55.120 --> 00:01:55.480

you want.

37

00:01:55.780 --> 00:01:57.840

You can use real textures or you can

38

00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:00.200

use imagined ones if you prefer.

39

00:02:00.200 --> 00:02:03.100

We'll do one of each in the exercises

40

00:02:03.100 --> 00:02:05.720

but you can use all of one or

41

00:02:05.720 --> 00:02:07.500

the others if you would like to.

42

00:02:07.639 --> 00:02:11.140

Instead use whatever you have in your space

43

00:02:11.140 --> 00:02:14.240

whether or not it's urban or indoors.

44

00:02:14.740 --> 00:02:17.740

So take a deep breath and let's begin

45

00:02:17.740 --> 00:02:18.980

with the exercise.

46

00:02:22.230 --> 00:02:25.050

Start by finding a comfortable position for you.

47

00:02:25.150 --> 00:02:27.730

It can be standing or seated or if

48

00:02:27.730 --> 00:02:30.310

you're walking find a pace that is comfortable

49

00:02:30.310 --> 00:02:32.590

to sustain for this exercise.

50

00:02:33.550 --> 00:02:37.450

Now bring your attention to the sensations in

51

00:02:37.450 --> 00:02:38.090

your feet.

52

00:02:39.050 --> 00:02:42.130

Notice the texture of the floor or the

53

00:02:42.130 --> 00:02:43.450

ground beneath you.

54

00:02:44.210 --> 00:02:49.050

Is it soft or hard rough or smooth?

55

00:02:49.570 --> 00:02:50.490

Is it uneven?

56

00:02:51.030 --> 00:02:52.150

Is it sticky?

57

00:02:53.390 --> 00:02:57.630

Allow your feet to sink into that sensation

58

00:02:57.630 --> 00:03:00.670

feeling the weight and the pressure of your

59

00:03:00.670 --> 00:03:03.490

body in relation to the ground or the

60

00:03:03.490 --> 00:03:04.750

floor beneath you.

61

00:03:05.550 --> 00:03:09.010

As you sit or stand or walk let

62

00:03:09.010 --> 00:03:11.810

your feet become heavy and connect with the

63

00:03:11.810 --> 00:03:12.910

ground fully.

64

00:03:18.730 --> 00:03:21.130

Next we will move your awareness to the

65

00:03:21.130 --> 00:03:22.030

rest of your body.

66

00:03:23.030 --> 00:03:25.250

Notice the texture of your clothing.

67

00:03:25.790 --> 00:03:27.770

Is it comfortable or uncomfortable?

68

00:03:28.990 --> 00:03:30.910

Notice any variations.

69

00:03:31.450 --> 00:03:35.850

A sweater, your socks, your pantaloons.

70

00:03:41.410 --> 00:03:44.510

Now notice the sensation of the air on

71

00:03:44.510 --> 00:03:48.210

your hands and face and how it compares

72

00:03:48.210 --> 00:03:50.210

to the texture of your clothing.

73

00:03:51.250 --> 00:03:54.430

For a few moments allow yourself to become

74

00:03:54.430 --> 00:03:58.730

fully immersed in the tactile experience that's in

75

00:03:58.730 --> 00:04:00.270

this present moment.

76

00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:11.100

And now let's use a memory of your

77

00:04:11.100 --> 00:04:14.040

senses preferably comfortable ones but it's up to

78

00:04:14.040 --> 00:04:14.360

you.

79

00:04:15.019 --> 00:04:18.120

If you have a strong tactile sensation to

80

00:04:18.120 --> 00:04:19.779

draw from let's use that.

81

00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:23.900

If you don't have one immediately available try

82

00:04:23.900 --> 00:04:26.040

to think about a time that you were

83

00:04:26.040 --> 00:04:26.660

in nature.

84

00:04:27.200 --> 00:04:29.440

Think of touching the bark of a tree,

85

00:04:29.940 --> 00:04:32.440

the fur of a past pet or the

86

00:04:32.440 --> 00:04:36.500

memory of warm sand or a warm patio

87

00:04:36.500 --> 00:04:37.840

on your bare feet.

88

00:04:39.790 --> 00:04:42.710

Take a moment to visualize that scene from

89

00:04:42.710 --> 00:04:45.010

your real lived memory.

90

00:04:45.870 --> 00:04:49.710

Notice the various textures that are present in

91

00:04:49.710 --> 00:04:50.410

that scene.

92

00:04:51.270 --> 00:04:52.590

Think about their qualities.

93

00:04:53.510 --> 00:04:56.690

Notice any emotions that these textures might bring

94

00:04:56.690 --> 00:04:57.950

up with them.

95

00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:11.980

Now take another deep breath and when you're

96

00:05:11.980 --> 00:05:14.980

ready come back to the present.

97

00:05:15.540 --> 00:05:18.580

Slowly open your eyes if they were closed

98

00:05:18.580 --> 00:05:21.020

and notice how you feel and take this

99

00:05:21.020 --> 00:05:25.900

sense of grounding and connection with you throughout

100

00:05:25.900 --> 00:05:26.480

your day.

101

00:05:26.860 --> 00:05:29.840

And now we will move on to a

102

00:05:29.840 --> 00:05:30.800

little bit of motivation.

103

00:05:34.880 --> 00:05:37.480

So this week in all three episodes we

104

00:05:37.480 --> 00:05:40.220

will honor anger and use it as a

105

00:05:40.220 --> 00:05:43.120

tool for positive meaningful motivation.

106

00:05:43.460 --> 00:05:45.540

So let's get started with that.

107

00:05:46.440 --> 00:05:49.420

As you begin to reconnect with the present

108

00:05:49.420 --> 00:05:52.840

moment I invite you to notice what emotions

109

00:05:52.840 --> 00:05:54.640

are arising within you.

110

00:05:54.980 --> 00:05:58.460

Maybe from our exercise or maybe from your

111

00:05:58.460 --> 00:06:00.620

current lived experience.

112

00:06:01.200 --> 00:06:03.840

Perhaps there's a sense of peace after our

113

00:06:03.840 --> 00:06:07.640

exercise but perhaps there's also anger or frustration

114

00:06:07.640 --> 00:06:12.260

or indignation at the state of our world.

115

00:06:12.540 --> 00:06:16.160

I want you to know something important that

116

00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:19.320

that anger deserves to be honored.

117

00:06:19.940 --> 00:06:22.800

In a society that often tells us to

118

00:06:22.800 --> 00:06:27.100

suppress that anger, especially if we belong to

119

00:06:27.100 --> 00:06:32.260

certain marginalized groups, recognizing anger as a valid

120

00:06:32.260 --> 00:06:35.800

thing in and of itself is like an

121

00:06:35.800 --> 00:06:37.160

act of reclamation.

122

00:06:37.940 --> 00:06:41.880

Your anger is not a disconnection from presence.

123

00:06:42.360 --> 00:06:45.540

It can be a profound indication that you

124

00:06:45.540 --> 00:06:49.260

are deeply connected to things that matter.

125

00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:53.360

Anger arises when our values are violated.

126

00:06:53.780 --> 00:06:58.640

When we witness injustice or exploitation is experienced

127

00:06:58.640 --> 00:07:02.100

or needless suffering is something that we see,

128

00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:06.500

anger is a natural healthy response to those

129

00:07:06.500 --> 00:07:07.120

things.

130

00:07:07.380 --> 00:07:12.100

It's your inner compass that is pointing towards

131

00:07:12.100 --> 00:07:16.280

what needs healing or attention or transformation.

132

00:07:17.160 --> 00:07:21.600

The systems of capitalism and fascism would prefer

133

00:07:21.600 --> 00:07:25.920

us to direct our anger inward as shame

134

00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:29.300

or outward as division against one another.

135

00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:34.340

These systems benefit when we're isolated in our

136

00:07:34.340 --> 00:07:37.060

anger, when we believe that it's just our

137

00:07:37.060 --> 00:07:40.760

individual personal problem to manage alone.

138

00:07:41.930 --> 00:07:45.740

But what if instead we allowed that anger

139

00:07:45.740 --> 00:07:49.120

to guide us back into connection?

140

00:07:49.720 --> 00:07:54.080

What if we shared honestly and discovered how

141

00:07:54.080 --> 00:07:56.820

many other people feel the same way?

142

00:07:57.060 --> 00:08:01.580

In identifying and naming our anger together, we

143

00:08:01.580 --> 00:08:05.860

can begin to identify our shared values like

144

00:08:05.860 --> 00:08:11.840

dignity or care, sustainability or acceptance of diversity

145

00:08:11.840 --> 00:08:14.000

or mutual support.

146

00:08:14.360 --> 00:08:17.100

Today I encourage you to sit with this

147

00:08:17.100 --> 00:08:17.600

question.

148

00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:21.780

What is my anger telling me about what

149

00:08:21.780 --> 00:08:24.360

matters most to me in this moment?

150

00:08:24.700 --> 00:08:28.020

Notice the values that you think about following

151

00:08:28.020 --> 00:08:29.000

that question.

152

00:08:29.320 --> 00:08:31.720

You can reach out to just one other

153

00:08:31.720 --> 00:08:34.919

person and share what you've discovered and ask

154

00:08:34.919 --> 00:08:38.760

them what values they have that drive their

155

00:08:38.760 --> 00:08:40.419

anger or frustration.

156

00:08:40.980 --> 00:08:44.160

And this simple exchange might be the beginning

157

00:08:44.160 --> 00:08:49.520

of collective understanding and this is part of

158

00:08:49.520 --> 00:08:51.980

what makes meaningful action.

159

00:08:52.360 --> 00:08:57.240

Remember that throughout history transformative movements weren't built

160

00:08:57.240 --> 00:09:02.740

on suppressed emotions or forced or toxic positivity.

161

00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:06.680

They were fueled by people who allowed themselves

162

00:09:06.680 --> 00:09:10.740

to feel deeply, to name and point out

163

00:09:10.740 --> 00:09:16.780

injustice, to channel their energy into sustained collective

164

00:09:16.780 --> 00:09:17.520

action.

165

00:09:17.940 --> 00:09:22.360

Your anger when recognized and shared with others

166

00:09:22.360 --> 00:09:27.660

becomes not something that's destructive but something that

167

00:09:27.660 --> 00:09:31.700

can be a powerful catalyst for connecting with

168

00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:33.840

each other and moving forward.

169

00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:36.340

It reminds us that we just care too

170

00:09:36.340 --> 00:09:39.340

much about these things to remain silent or

171

00:09:39.340 --> 00:09:40.240

complacent.

172

00:09:40.560 --> 00:09:43.480

It energizes us when the work of change

173

00:09:43.480 --> 00:09:45.280

feels like too much.

174

00:09:45.860 --> 00:09:49.280

As you move throughout your day, carry your

175

00:09:49.280 --> 00:09:51.120

anger as gifts.

176

00:09:51.880 --> 00:09:54.720

Not burdens that need to be suppressed but

177

00:09:55.460 --> 00:09:59.340

powerful indicators that you are aware of things

178

00:09:59.340 --> 00:10:02.280

and that you are alive to the things

179

00:10:02.280 --> 00:10:03.020

that matter.

180

00:10:03.780 --> 00:10:07.120

You're not alone in these feelings and together

181

00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:10.600

if we are guided by the values that

182

00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:13.460

we share, we have a lot of power

183

00:10:13.460 --> 00:10:15.620

together to make change.

184

00:10:15.980 --> 00:10:19.520

You're present and you're part of something greater,

185

00:10:19.800 --> 00:10:22.020

of a world that could be better again

186

00:10:22.020 --> 00:10:25.360

but it's certainly better with you in it

187

00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:27.540

and there's a lot of different ways to

188

00:10:27.540 --> 00:10:28.920

go about these things.

189

00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:37.760

So that's it for today, Monday March 10th.
