"How Are You So Happy?" Rudy Vasquez gets asked all the time when people see him in his wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down. Rudy taught us so much in our hour together,
he changed our lives forever with his positive attitude and the most powerful lessons.
Rudy was a soccer star since early on, then a soccer star on the SMU College Team and ultimately on the USA Soccer Olympic Team. An athlete through and through, always running, always on the go.
Until that fateful night of October 19, 2017 when he and his best friend Bruce Harris, brother of former Dallas Mavericks Star Devin Harris, were involved in a horrific car accident. Their car stalled on the highway and
they desperately tried to make it to the shoulder but were hit full speed from behind.
Rudy describes in detail what happened, how he found out that his best friend Bruce didn't make it and that he himself was paralyzed. The story is gripping, devastating yet so uplifting.
He shares something with us from the accident scene that he has never told anyone.
Rudy believes that he will walk one day and we have no doubt that he will make that happen and we cannot wait for that day.
Rudy tells us that the hardest to deal with was that he felt he failed his beautiful son Aston, but instead his son has now learned compassion, thoughtfulness and he is his helping hand 100% of the time.
He says he would rather see his son be the best human being he can be instead of being the best athlete in the world.
Meditation gets him through every day and challenging his belief system as well as eliminating your ego. He teaches us to practice self awareness and stay present and to get off your phones to not check out of real life.
Ben, one of Rudy's best friends taught him to quit judging the experience before you have it, have the experience first and try to enjoy that and learn from it. That's what true life is.
This has been the reason that Rudy has started traveling again because he has discovered that for every challenge there is going to be a solution.
He talks about the trips he has taken so far to Miami, Columbia and Tulum.
Rudy says that his injury has made him see the better part of people.
Rudy credits his parents, his brother and his son for being 100 % supportive and helpful to him. Rudy has full custody of his son.
He owns his own real estate firm Texas Trust Reality and an investment firm House Hercules.
