Well, if you're a fan of the drill Baby drill sentiment. You should know US oil drillers are exporting a record amount of crude oil this year, just as OPEK is preparing to gather next month in their meeting to consider lowering their production in order to try to drive prices higher. Duncan just introduced its new banana chocolate chip bread in its honor. What we've seen markets go from up to mix. Stick around. This week in music is on the Way News Radio eight forty wajas were what hamming? All right, folks, it's time for one of the more popular eventually do all week, and that is This Week in Music, produced by Dave Jennings and written by Dwight Winton. That's right, a lot of
stuff happened this week in music, so let's jump right into it. February twenty first, sixty seven. That's where Pink Floyd started their first session at Emi Studios in London for their date debut album. That was an interesting time there while they were recording this stuff because while Pink Floyd was there recording their first album with former Beatles engineer Norman Smith, well, the Beatles themselves were there working in the very next studio next door on fixing a hole from Sergeant
Pepper's. Also in the studio that day, bouncing back and forth from studio studio Mickey Dolan's were the Monkeys. So imagine being part of that recording session. Man, you got the Beatles of Pink Floyd. All right, there, let's go to this day of February twenty first, but let's jump up to nineteen seventy. Everyone knows this song Bridge over Troubled Water. Let's second. Yeah, it's just me, that's it's not you, Doctor Fasher. You can't hit the high notes. When is't that good? It's good stuff,
man, it's kidding. Wow Wow Wow. Simon A. Guarfunckel went number one on the charts with Bridge over Troubled Water. The album actually stayed on the charts, not at number one, but it stayed on the charts for over three hundred weeks. Oh my god. But it did return to the tops of the charts on eight separate different occasions. Of course, you know, you get a movie soundtrack or something like that pops it right back up. But it did actually throughout that time, spend forty one weeks.
Wow, at number one. We're gonna stay on February twenty du right, I guess we'll never know. I'm the one stuck with Art Garfunckl's hair. Let's stay on February twenty first, but let's go up up. Nineteen seventy two, what a band man, Hammer of the Gods. Led Zeppelin released rock and Roll and four Sticks as a single in the US. Believe it or not, it only pete at forty seven on the US starts. How
was the song written? Well, rock and Roll was actually written. It was a spontaneous jam session the band was finishing the song for Sticks, and then that's when the drummer John Bonham played the introduction to the Little Richards keep a knocking. Jimmy Page jumped in with a guitar. Ref They decided to roll tapes and the song was finished in its entirety cool fifteen minutes. Wow, we gave away a drum kit once and they had to play this song
like we got ten winners off the air. These were not drummers and they beat the hell out of that drumk kit. It wasn't worth anything by the time. Yeah, rock and roll is a hell of a drum opening. Let's go to February twenty second, nineteen seventy six. It's a sad it's sad story for one of the Supremes. Florence Ballad of the Supremes died of cardiac arrest. Fortunately, unfortunately, she left the group in nineteen sixty seven
and lost an eight million dollar lawsuit against them. When force Baller died, she actually died broken on welfare. Let's stay off February twenty second, but let's jump up to nineteen seventy seven. That's when the Eagles released Hotel California titles track from the album. It was written by Don Felder, Don Henley, and Glenn Fry. There's also been also arguments throughout the year that Don
Felder says I wrote this guitar riff one hundred percent by myself. In nineteen eighty eight, the song was voted as the number one guitar solo and then the actually of the Year of the record came out and won a Grammy as well. As we go to a Bizarre Story and stay on February twenty second, we go to nineteen eighty nine. That's when the Grammy Awards deciding we're gonna have a brand new category for the Grammys. The category will be heavy
Metal. Well, Metallica performed on stage, but the award went to this band, Ian Anderson and the band Jeff row Tall. Many people in the audience booed when Ian Anderson and Jeff row Tall went up. Meanwhile, Bobby McFerrin's Record of the Year went for Don't Worry Be Happy. Let's jump up a date to February. I did to Let's just don't Worry. Please destroy
this cassette. Let's go to February twenty third. After nearly five years of marriage, Priscilla Presley moved out of Elvis Presley's California home into a two bedroom apartment near the Pacific Ocean. What's the weirdos. The divorce be finished on the October nineteen seventy three. Priscilla was awarded out of that an outright payment of cash of seven hundred and twenty five thousand dollars, which would have been
a lot in seventy two. It's a lot now, plus spousal support, child support, a five percent of Elvis's new publishing company, and half of the income from the sale of their Beverly Hills home. So she did alright, Well, yeah, I mean, daddy, can I move to America with this older army gentleman? Well you're only fourteen sweetye? I don't know, Okay, let's stay oft. February twenty third, we had Otis Wilson from The Temptations was our guest yesterday. It was a sad day in nineteen
ninety five. On February twenty third, that's where Melvin Franklin of The Temptations died of a brain seizure. He was only fifty two years old. Part of songs like Just My Imagination like we're here right now, my girls. So many more. Franklin was actually shot in the hand in the leg when trying to stop a man stealing his car. Let him have a car, yeah, go let him have the car. It's a bizarre story when we jump to two thousand and three, but we stay on February twenty third.
That's when all the news started reports getting out about Michael Jackson undergoing scores and scores of painful operations. Here's what they were. He was trying to strip the black skin underneath it from the pigment to make him appear white, and the surgeons and Santa Montic Clinic where he was having this done eventually said stop it. We refuse to do any more of these treatments. Thank you. Uh. Problem with these plastic surgeries that the doctors sometimes say, we're not
doing this anymore. Right, Here's where we're the biggest concerned. He had to be. He had to go through anaesthesia he put under to get these surgeries done. Tony to day. Problem is on a weekly basis, he was having this done, his skin peeled and having bleached. You can't you can't go under anesthesia over and over and over. I review that as we hear black or white right now, ironic choice. I mean he towards the
end he was translucent. What do you do you remember when the foreign journalists sat him down and said, well, what about all the little the picture out? He said what He pulled the old Michael Judgeon picture out and he said, let's talk about this surgery, these these plastic surgeries. You have it and he goes, I haven't had no. He goes, you're telling me you haven't had any surgery. It pulls up the picture. You go, don't know. It was the same phase when Susan asked you what happened
to all the chocolate? And that's that's what they said to Michael Jackson. Oh wait a minute, wait a minute, stop it all. We are sitting to President Dave. I want you to take fifteen dollars joke. Jar, Yes, well done, Jar, well done. As we jumped to February twenty fourth, and we go to one of my favorite bands, the Rolling Stones. Well, February twenty fourth, nineteen sixty three. It was a huge day for the Rolling Stones because they started their Sunday Night residency at
the Station Hotel. Sunday Night Residency what a break station night Hotel. Yes, the band was paid forty one dollars a week the band. The band was paid forty one dollars a week to perform at the station hotel. Their average crowd sixty six people. Let's go to nineteen seventy three. That's when ROBERTA Flack had a wonderful song. It's been covered many times, but Berda
Flax will always be the ego standard to this song. Roberta Flack had her second US number one with Killing Me Softly with his song start a five week run at the top of the charts. The song was actually written as a collaboration between her and Lorie Lieberman, and it was a poem after she experienced a strong reaction to singer Don McLean's song Empty Chairs. ROBERTA Flack heard it
her and Lieberman they did this song together. The first time anyone ever saw this is when she performed it live on stage while opening for the late great Marvin Gaye. Marvin Gaye standing in the wings, he's watching ROBERTA Flack. She plays this song for the first time live. Marvin gay grabs her and says, you have to play this song. You have to record this song before you ever play it live again, make sure this is yours. She did. And the rest of the story is we're hearing the song right now.
What amutiful song. It's like, I don't know how many movies has that song in it too. Absolutely, let's jump, let's stay on that day. But let's go to nineteen seventy five. That's when led Zeppelin release Physical Graffiti on February twenty fourth, nineteen seventy five. What an album that was. As we hear Custard Pie right now from Physical Graffiti. It was
the sixth album that led Zeppelin put out. Recording sessions were actually disrupted though, when bass player and keyboard player John Paul Jones proposed I'm quitting led Zeppelin. Enough for me, I'm gonna be the choir master at Winchester Cathedral, English. Enough with us led Zeppelin crap. Here's what sparked that, well, he was tired of touring and the demanding schedules for led Zeppelin. He wanted to just go take teach choir to boys and girls and be done with
it. The group convinced him to stay on with led Zeppelin. They finished the album. If you know Physical Graffiti is a double album, and the reason behind that is because they wanted to put leftover album or leftover songs from previous albums on there. It is a double album and also records. The reasons double is because has unreleased songs from Zeppelin three, Zeppelin four also Houses
of the Whole. Up to February twenty fifth, double albums were awesome because you can open it up right on your floor as a kid, and you could say, just look at the album for hours, and if you were like deceating things all the well, never mind, never mind, let's let's go to February twenty fifth. Snorten nineteen eighty five. That's where this song jump Bob the original. They broke out the keyboards and the fan base was
apoplectic. Everybody here, look up Apple. Everybody blames Sammy Hagar for the introduction of synthesizers to the Van Halo music. This song, right hair proves it wrong, and he was way ahead of that before Sammy Hagar came on. The band hated it, didn't They hate that song? I just because the you ever seen the video? Yeah, it's awful. Well, they were all awful back there was not heighty four. It sounded like, do
we have to do this audio? And then they said we're gonna play the song just from Jump, by van Halen started a final you crawled towards the camera. Crawl, crawl, crawl, stop crawl. They had a five week run at number one on the US single charts. David Lee Roth, the singer van Halen, talked about the lyrics on a TV news report one time. He was talking about how he came up with the lines for jump because he was watching a man on top of the building threatening to commit suicide.
Yeah. Roth thought that one of the onlookers of such a scene would probably shout, go ahead and jump, and that's where he came up with the concept for bat. And here's the other keyboard song before Sammy. I'll wait. I love the keyboard in the rock band too, the cars I think to. It's not like Eddie van Halen took away his solos from it. He just it just incorporated the new sound. I'm giving up the guitar and playing the keyboard now to whatever the hell you do, just keep writing
music, is probably what they said. Let's end on a melancholy, happy yet sad day. February twenty fifth, nineteen ninety five. That's when the Chairman of the Board, the only royalty that the US has ever had the chairman of the board, Frank Sinatra, at a private party for twelve hundred selected guest played his last show at the Desert Classic golf tournament. Frank Sinatra sang before a live audience. It would be the very last time that he sang. He did it his way though, I mean he did it his
way, the very last song that he ever sang in public. Yeah, right here. The best is yet to come. Then Frank Sinatra Blue Eyes, Chairman of the board, dropped the mic. You walked aways. Well, he's pretty bad. Towards the end, the band, he would switch songs in the middle of songs, and the band would have the band would really have to be familiar with what was going on, because then they would go, oh, singing so and so so, we'd have to switch the
song. If you ever, if you ever want a taste of the flavor of how great and entertaining a Sinatra show was, get Frank Sinatra live in the Sound Sands with count and Basie. It's absolutely spectacular. His engagement with the audience every song on the whole band, and that wraps it up. That's this weekend music, all right, food American band,
