Amy Martin: Hey Bear. Amy Martin: I'm in Glacier National Park. Amy Martin: I'm walking out from Siyeh Amy Martin: Pass. Amy Martin: This is one of my favorite Amy Martin: hikes in the park. Amy Martin: And a couple Amy Martin: of miles back, I Amy Martin: had the- Amy Martin: hey bear!- Amy Martin: the lovely surprise and Amy Martin: somewhat dangerous situation of Amy Martin: seeing two Amy Martin: grizzly bear moms and Amy Martin: three cubs.

Amy Martin: And I just walked over a big Amy Martin: pile of bear scat. Amy Martin: Hey bear. Amy Martin: So Amy Martin: I have this funny Amy Martin: experience of coming to this Amy Martin: place that I Amy Martin: love Amy Martin: and just soaking in the quiet Amy Martin: and loving it. Amy Martin: And then I need to be loud Amy Martin: for safety purposes. Amy Martin: But it's no joke. Amy Martin: Yelling "Hey Bear" saves lives. Amy Martin: I'm going to do it Amy Martin: right now.

Amy Martin: Hey Bear. Amy Martin: Because if you surprise them and Amy Martin: they charge you or hurt you, Amy Martin: it's very Amy Martin: likely that bear is going to Amy Martin: get killed. Amy Martin: And of course, you might get Amy Martin: killed. Amy Martin: Neither option Amy Martin: is ideal. Amy Martin: Hey Bear. Amy Martin: It's so funny. Amy Martin: Just because we're so loud, I'm Amy Martin: so loud. Amy Martin: Moving around my daily life in Amy Martin: a car.

Amy Martin: All the many things I do Amy Martin: that are just modern Amy Martin: human noise making. Amy Martin: And here, Amy Martin: where I'm at my quietest, here Amy Martin: it's like, Amy Martin: shout! Amy Martin: Make some noise! Amy Martin: And although it annoys Amy Martin: me to have to Amy Martin: do this, Amy Martin: there's something I think Amy Martin: that's also interesting Amy Martin: about it.

Amy Martin: Here we are in this place where Amy Martin: as much as possible Amy Martin: the animal's needs are Amy Martin: in the forefront Amy Martin: and we have to adapt around Amy Martin: them. Amy Martin: I have to discipline myself Amy Martin: to the place and to Amy Martin: the animals in the place. Amy Martin: I have to Amy Martin: do something Amy Martin: that I would prefer not to do. Amy Martin: For all of our good, Amy Martin: mine, theirs, other hikers. Amy Martin: Hey Bear.

Amy Martin: It makes me so, like, Amy Martin: hyper aware of my noise, Amy Martin: hyper aware of when I'm being Amy Martin: quiet. Amy Martin: What would it be like if every Amy Martin: time I Amy Martin: added noise to a place Amy Martin: I was super Amy Martin: aware of it? Amy Martin: Like I am with all this

Amy Martin: hey-bearing. Hey Bear. Amy Martin: It's so hard to imagine what Amy Martin: that would be like because Amy Martin: it's so Amy Martin: not Amy Martin: the experience that I normally Amy Martin: have. Amy Martin: There's an airplane. Amy Martin: Hey there. Are you headed up to Amy Martin: the pass? Hiker: Yeah. Amy Martin: It's been a while now, but I Amy Martin: ran into 2 sows and 3 cubs. Hiker: Cool. Amy Martin: Yeah, it was very cool. Amy Martin: A little too close for comfort.

Hiker: Yeah. Amy Martin: They're going the other way. Amy Martin: Just make a lot of noise. Hiker: Okay. Thanks for the heads up. Amy Martin: Yeah. Have fun.
