Welcome to this Watch live. Hi, I'm Lydia Winters. And I'm Boo Booey and it's episode 1909. 90. 90 That it's kind of incredible. I don't know how we got here. We are two weeks away from our 100th episode, and as the little planner that I am, I have been thinking about what to do to celebrate 100 episodes. And the podcast. No, no, that's terrible. Oh my gosh, we're not ending. It we're not ending No, no, no, we're not ending podcast.
OK no. I've been thinking about how we could make like 100 Club like, so if you've listened to all 100 episodes that's why I'm I'm I was a former teacher so I'm giving you two weeks to have to make up your assignments if. You've missed. Any and then I was thinking about sending out little cards to everyone who is in the 100 Club. That sounds super fun. I think that's awesome. I'm going to use a very high tech software thingy that can definitely tell whether or not
people are lying. There there's no way. This is the honor system and. Also but I have. Like with this, I have like a tiny bit of bad news for you. For Wait for me or for our listeners. No, you Boo. Oh no. You haven't done 100 episodes of this podcast. Wait, what? Because the Mindy. Episode with only Mindy and me. Well then I guess I'm going to have to do an episode without you next week, and then we have to do 101. No, wait, 101 Dalmatian. 100 Club is Have you listened to 100 episodes?
So yeah. OK. Yeah. Because you always try back on the sound. So fair, Fair enough. Fair enough. So if you want to be part of the 100 Club, or maybe you will soon already be on in two weeks we're going to open it up for addresses and I will send you something in the mail. In snail mail. I love it. I love. Making hearts real. Things can touch and feel like watches. Swizz, Mamba asks. Arabic numerals, Roman numerals, or no numerals?
And why? OK, first of all, I absolutely love this question because I haven't thought of it before. Like I haven't really stopped to think about it. And so we have our Arabic numerals, that's 0123456789. Those are the numbers that are originally derived from a much older Indian numbering system and they were introduced to Europeans from Arab sources, hence the name Arabic numerals. I realized I I very much like watches with Arabic numerals.
Me too. I didn't ever call them Arabic numerals until I got into the watch world. I was like, what is everyone talking about? You mean numbers? I was. Genuinely like. What I was actually confused, but I was thinking about this because then you also have like this, the fat like a subsect of that is bregae numerals and so that's that more like, you know, they still are Arabic numerals in a bregae style. So I like that kind of, you know, like there's many different layers.
But are BREGAE numerals a specific typeface or a style of typeface? I think it's a style of typeface. I don't think it's a specific like this is. We should have done a little tiny bit. No, I have. I'm. I'm going to say that it's not a specific font because you have like the one I really love is the Noya Yahida, the NH Type 1D, which has these beautiful breaking numerals and they're just so gorgeous. But I don't have any. I have no watch. I believe I have no watches with bregae numerals.
We each checked each other's collections. Is that correct, Phil? I didn't check for bregae numerals that. Wasn't part of the great. I don't have it. I don't have. It. I don't think you do. Neither of us do. No, I know I don't and I don't think you do. I have looked at that launching master collection, the new one where they released as 38 or 39mm salmon dial with the engraved bregae style numerals.
Really beautiful. But I did not buy it, I just looked at it. OK, so another thing we have is Roman numerals. So Roman numerals are a numeral system that originated in ancient Rome and remain the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe well into the late Middle Ages. The numbers are written with combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet, each letter with
a fixed integer value. So then you have like the notations IV and IX can be read as one less than five or one less than 10. And there's one thing that I found interesting is, although there's a traditional favouring representation of four as four eyes on Roman numeral clocks. So that's something fun too, like. And that has made its way into watches as. Well into watches, yeah. Not always though, it's because I've seen it done both ways, so. Yeah, that is both ways.
So I really like a lot of designers talk about the weighting of having four eyes as the four. It can feel very heavy, but it can also feel kind of heavy the opposite way with the I and the V So yes, I also never knew that about the Latin alphabet. So I've learned a lot just from this question. Thank you. So it's Mama, this one again. I'm still thinking about Akita because I will be going to see them for their trunk show tomorrow are. You excited like how do you
feel? About it I get to I get to meet him. I get to meet Mark Cho. I get to see all the watches, see new released watches. I don't know how many they're releasing, maybe one, but I've been seeing some little teasers on their Instagram. I'm very, very excited and one that has Roman numerals. Another one I'm interested in is the type 3A moon phase and it has the Roman numerals and so I thought that's really cool. Both the Brega and the Roman would be completely new for me.
That's true, but I really. Like the Arabic one. So maybe I'll be. Maybe I'll just. Go I kind of want to take the dial from the type 3 and the case four and put them together. Get out it you. Stop making your your little hybrid babies. Can you ask Mr. Hida if he can put these together? Absolutely will not. Absolutely no application will be rejected immediately. OK And then the last one, just we're just going through them first, Arabic, Roman and no
numerals. So that would be a lot of times you could have indices or you could also have nothing. So like, I have the Bachelor on Constantine, the Cartier Moose Tank Moose, and both of them. There's nothing on there. They're just a plain dial, which I really like, but honestly, I cannot tell the time. The other day I'm letting my mom wear my basher on Harmony and I let my sister is going to wear the date dress while my dad continues through his treatment.
And I my mom's like, you set this watch 2 minutes slow and I thought only two minutes slow. I was so proud of myself. I'm pretty sure when there's no numerals there that it's very typically very. Loosey goosey. Yes, very loosey goosey. She did set it to be the precise time. She is a VU.
That is the way to be. But then I was reading a crowning caliber article and it's not just like so you have no numerals, completely clean, but then with indices you have stick indices, you have round indices, you have diamond markers, baton indices, which are just typically a little, a little more wide than the stick indices. And also that gives them space to have loom in them.
And then also you have an error marker at the 12, which is another type of, you know, kind of look most and a lot of times that's paired with, you know, round indices or stick indices you know, so then. Oh, go go ahead. I I was just going to say, like I never thought about it. But I realize now one of the reasons I love the Nomos Club campus style is that it has all three.
It has all three exactly. I I never thought of it because I always kind of just thought of it as having Roman and Arabic, but the fact is it it doesn't. It also has sticks for the odd numbers on the dials, which is pretty cool. Known as a California dial. But when Nomos does it, they're inverting it. And then they call it a bilingual dial, which is then even better when we talk about this language lesson today, Language and numbers. Oh my gosh. Lydia, learn something.
Maybe a listener will learn something. Listening to this podcast tonight. I'm learning a lot going through this. OK, so then when I decided is that VU would look at my collection, well OK first I guess to answer the question. Arabic numerals, Roman numerals or no numerals and why? Do you have a thought on that before I say what your collection actually looks like? No. What do you mean? Do I have a thought? Well, no. I mean, do you have one you
think you prefer? Oh yeah, I mean, if you ask me, I prefer Arabic. Oh, yes, yeah, I. Prefer Arabic. I love them. I like the look of them. I I talk about them like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. OK. So I was going to say that I would say no numerals for me. OK. Like that I. You prefer no numerals or you see? So there's two different questions here. Is it? What do we think we prefer, or what do we think we own the most of? What I think I prefer is no
numerals. And then what I think I own the most of is no numerals. OK, well, so I actually, but I think so you said you prefer Arabic numerals and that is absolutely when. I have done. When I have done the list, that is absolutely incorrect. No, but I no. I I prefer Arabic numerals, but the watches that I like don't have them. It's not the only criteria for choosing a watch.
So although I love Arabic numerals on a dial, it doesn't work on every dial and it doesn't work on every watch that I want. So no, if you ask me what I have the most of, I would also say none. So for you, 71% of your collection is no. Yes, that's what I thought. 25% is Arabic numerals and 4% is Roman. OK. I actually, I think I would have thought of that. I didn't do yours in percentage. It's a bit of more loosey,
goosey. There's just a lot of circles that say things like stick and no. OK, well, we know that I have mostly no numerals. You have mostly no numerals, however you the one that's most you have two Arabic one is the Tetra with the mix and one is the Murph and then the club or I guess 3 cause the club campus
has everything. But the thing I thought was most interesting is once I got down into like the subsets of the no numerals you prefer round indices with an arrow marker at 12. I don't think it's that I prefer those, it's that I own them and it's because I own a lot of tutor. You do, you do and the GMT. Is also the same. Actually, yeah. So my tutor and Rolex. The Oris Momotaro is also the same, so you actually like a bulk of your collection is circle indices with the arrow marker.
On the 12th. The most of mine are the baton indices because I love O PS. That is true. That is absolutely true. I loved this question. I would really like to know what what make up all of you have because I think it's just really fun like it it was just really fun to go through. Yeah, and think about it and vu you definitely need some more Arabic numeral. Yes, I do. I really, really do. I'm gonna work on that, OK? Yordi Nunez asks.
I'm trying to save for one of my favorite watches, but on the way to it lots of amazing watches appear, some too sweet and less expensive that make my saving time very very difficult. How do you manage and then said by the way, and it's an image of ABB 58. ABB 54. Oh, is it a 54? Yeah. Well. That's a 54. That's why it's too. Tiny, OK, we're the worst people to ask this question. Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, because I'm just like. I don't have patience or or
discipline. No patience and discipline. Neither of those are skill. Like I think this. Is not unique to us, though. This is the flight of the watch enthusiast. There's always interesting but more attainable things along the road to your big goals. Yes, there absolutely is. They're like, oh, but this is great. I think it's that you have to start thinking about how far is it OK for that goal to be And when you take these little detours, do like how much time
do they add? That's what I've been trying to think about. I think absolutely not doing it though. No, but OK, So there is also another way to think about this, but there's a danger to it. OK. So one way to manage is if you have, you have to keep the mindset that you do want this big thing. Like you are moving towards this big thing. And you have to be careful with the watches that you buy along the way.
But you essentially could buy a bunch of watches along the way to your big goal, but you have to buy them at great prices that you can then later sell them for. You know you can lose a little bit, but you don't want to lose too much on them. So most likely buying second hand right? And then later you'll have a big old collection that is equal to the value of the big thing you want and then you just have to sell them all to buy the big
thing. But the problem is, it's it's so it's kind of like saving money, right? Like they become your your bank account, but you get to wear them on the wrist. The problem is that if you fall in love with any of them, that sets you back, right? Because you won't want to sell them. So that's true, it's more risky. Also you could lose 1 or the
value could go way down. You know, like the it's a riskier way to do it. But it is possible to move towards your goal and still buy watches along the way, but you just have to be willing to let them go at the end. Yeah, I'm not really a letter goer, so I think. That's what we know. Like hard for me to think about. You are now becoming a letter goer. Yes, you have. Committed to culling the collection and part of that will move towards your nightly
heater. I sold VU the BB 54 that he then gave to me so that was great for me and I sold Vern Watch studies the bracelet for my Cartier tank moose so. You're already doing well, I'm. Calling so much. Just call in every day. The BB 54 I had wanted to buy for you. You didn't let me and that's why I had to buy it from you to give to you as an anniversary present. Yes, but I will say I've been thinking a lot about this because I have this Naya Ohita that I'm very, very interested in.
And that would mean that I need to actually, you know, save up for it and stop just casually just getting excited and buying something which I have tried to slow down. But I do think like my brother recently gave me for my birthday, a 1987 Swatch, which is I love it so much. It looks so cool on you. I got so much joy out of it. Also, he's been listening to the podcast too. So hey Jeremy, I didn't realize you were in on this.
Also not a not a you know, a watch guy but has started listening since Mindy and my episode. So he hates you Boo. And this watch that he gave me. I've been wearing it on my right wrist instead of my left. I've been wearing my Tudor Black Bay 54 on this trip and wearing this adorable 80s Swatch on my my first birth year watch on my right wrist. And it has brought me so much joy. And then I thought, a way to
still get the fun. Like, I understood suddenly why people might buy, you know, like more eBay watches, less expensive watches where you can spend 50 or $100 on something vintage and fun and small and you get that, like excitement of a new watch, but you don't have to go all the way to wow, I bought something huge and I'm so far from my goal so that yeah, that kind of opened my eyes because so much joy out of it.
Like happy when I look at it, happy when I hear it tick, happy when I like just a lot of happiness. I I I agree with this. I I haven't bought a sub $100 watch in quite a while, but I realized not too long ago that I get almost the same joy out of a very affordable watch as I do out of a very expensive one. You know that that initial feeling which does fade, but that initial feeling of I just got a new watch. It is great even when it's just
something small and fun. So that is a good way to kind of quell those temptations but still get something out of it. Absolutely. Well, if you're if you're a better saver than us, then please, please give us some advice. And. And Jordy, oh wait, bye bye. Bye, bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye. You can't do it when you're remote. Bye. Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye. You're just randomly singing. I'm trying. Bye everyone. Bye everyone.
