Episode description

Today Lydia talks through why she bought the second half of her Rolex collection, one watch at a time. Particularly interesting was the fact that she previously wasn't even interested in the ceramic Daytona.

Transcript

Welcome to this watch, life. Hi, I'm Lydia Winter. And I'm Boo booing. Are you excited? Yes, but you told me that I couldn't talk about watches and wonders today, 'cause you were like, it's too much before it starts and then I get to the rest of the. Week. That's true. OK, fair. Fair enough. So. Even though. No. Today we're going to talk about Rolex, which has nothing to do with watches and. Wonders. No, definitely not.

Nothing at all. This is Part 2, if you somehow missed it, part one of Lydia's Rolex collection. What's the episode before this? Yes, here we go now. It's embarrassing to have it called Part One and Part 2. There's only two parts until watches and wonders. It's an under 20 minute podcast, so it had to. Be split in two. That's true. That's true. That makes me feel somewhat better. OK, last Friday we went through

my Rolex date. Just Rolex Turquoise, Rolex GMT Master 2, and Rolex Yellow. The the GMT Master 2 on the poles was the favorite out of those. Oh, was it from people? Yes. And OK, so Next up we have Oh no, we did the yellow too. Yeah, we did the yellow. OK, you said it. I OK. I don't even remember. It's the morning. I don't remember. 10 seconds ago I was like, all right, did I say that?

OK, so the next watch I am going to blame squarely, circularly on my friend Perfect Angel, who I love, Britt Pierce. Yes. I mean, I wouldn't say it was her fault. It was her fault, OK? Best friend energy just coming through. Coming strong at me. Yeah. When we went on a surprise trip for Britt's birthday. Yes, Britt's 30th birthday. It. Wasn't a surprise to James, no. So her husband James knew we were coming to Britt. It was a total surprise. And we also had never met in real life.

Had never met. We flew over and then we all stayed in an Airbnb and we had like 5 days of fun together. Watches, watches, watches. Turns out we love them. It was. Perfect, it all worked out. But Britt was wearing her black Daytona, yes. Black Ceramic Daytona. Have never been interested in it. Cool watch, but I've never felt any sort of like, pull towards it. No, you had never even tried it on. No, I don't think so. You were just kind of like, oh it's. A cool watch, but not for me.

So then I looked at my impossibly cool friend Brett, and the Daytona looked awesome with everything she was wearing. And her wrist is just a bit smaller than mine. Just a tiny bit. So I could actually wear the Daytona, which I have on right now. Oh yeah. You do? And not Brits. So this watch, the thing that surprised me so much is how well it wears. It just really sits so nicely on my wrist for a 40mm watch.

It's has such a slim case. It has you know it's a chronograph so it's extra slim for that and and a Daytona and the Daytona Speedway is in Florida so I I felt you know Florida ish mainly it was just looked really cool so I let Britt wear my turquoise she I she wore my turquoise. I got to wear the Daytona she wore my GMT master. We were switching watches and it was very cool to actually there was one of the first times I was wearing someone else's watch

because food isn't sure and. You've put on my. Watches wearing, but this is the. Time I was. Getting to wear them and I fell in love with the Daytona. Well, this goes back. I mean, we've mentioned it before, but putting a watch on at the AD and just draping it over your wrist now, hey, maybe I envy people who have huge wrists who can just like, oh wow, the the default bracelet size fits me perfectly.

But for many of us who have medium to small wrists, like when you put that watch on at the AD, it's just dangling right like all that extra bracelet. And so looking straight down, you can kind of see what it looks like. You don't get to know what it feels like on the wrist, really. And even if you you know some places they have little foam things that you can stick behind the bracelet. Sometimes those don't fit me. They're too like the. Other day it was falling out. I was like.

But I think what you got to experience was a fitted watch. How this watch would. Fit a huge difference. The other day Popping Crowns was telling me that a friend of his actually offered to lend him a watch because like he's he's tried it on before but he he feels like he needs to wear one to know if he likes it. But he's like, I don't think I can borrow someone's watch. And then I told him about you and Britt and I'm like, just go and hang out for the day and

like. Swap watches, swap watches. That did feel nice because it was like, it didn't make it feel like either of us, you know, you're not out of sight, really from the other person. So you don't feel like, oh, well, it's not like, oh, I'm taking this valuable thing home. It's just like we're wearing them together. Somehow does feel more risky to like, fully borrow something and leave that person's presence. Yeah, exactly. You're like. You saw everything I did.

I didn't really smash my hands back and forth on any walls. You didn't see that? Happen. But so you did that. You spent the day two, I think 2 days wearing it and then you were like I have. To Yeah, I was really obsessed with it. So Black Daytona is now in my collection. It's the Brit, Pierce, Daytona. That's that's how I know it. It is an amazing watch and like you said, for an automatic chronograph. I don't know of any other automatic chronographs that are that thin.

It's it's incredible. Every once in a while. Every once in a while. And I guess this is in our family, because you've already told your story about turning down the white Daytona every once in a while. I'm like, I don't know, do I like, do I really love this? I mean, it's a really expensive watch. And then I put it on and it just, it fits my style. It, yeah, it's so it's usually. When I love wearing only OP. When I'm when I go down to 36mm for a long time, I just.

You're in your mind. It's too big. You're like, why would I wear the Daytona? It's so big. And then you put it on and you're like, Oh yeah, I think this is one of the things about the Daytona, because they advertise it as a 40mm watch, but if you measure just the case, no crown, no pushers, it is 38, yeah. And so it actually wears much smaller than you'd think that a 40mm chronograph would.

Wear. That's true with my all my Rolex. We we looked at it and I have a 37mm average, yes, because only only the GMT Master Two and the Daytona are not 36mm no. They are both 40 we we used the 40 to calculate, but yes so you average. 37mm which I would say that is my perfect size, 36 and 37, there's just no 30. Six. My average is 41 because I have a 40 mil and a 42. Yes. OK, it's easy to calculate. Next up was the Explorer 1. Have looked at it a lot of times.

Many times. Friends like watch girl life. Trish has the 2 tone. Gorgeous. 2 Tone's Beautiful. Love it. I think it was really pocket trinkets photos that. You. Well, yeah. Really helped you to understand what the watch would look and feel like and got you excited. Yes. So Aaron, her photos are just ridiculous and I just kept looking at it and when I was in New York that's what she was wearing and I was like this watch is so beautiful and she is just like loves it so much.

So it definitely it definitely this was a case of Internet. Internet getting the best of me. But I also I love the Explorer one. It is even more tapered in the bracelet than my Oyster Perpetuals, which are super tapered. They're both 36 mil, so like the the top half of the watch feels very similar, but when you put it on the wrist, the Explorer feels so much smaller because of that extra taper, that very small clasp. It's just really, really nice. It's actually what sizes it.

I was going to say, yeah, you've tried to try it on. I would. Love to wear that watch, but the clasp because it's smaller and then I must have some strange ratio of hand to wrist where my wrists are very narrow and this is. This podcast is weird now. Hand or something. This is a weird podcast. Everything you're saying is only watch. It's weird, No? But it works in watches. It does, but it's weird. If I size that bracelet to my wrist, then it doesn't fit over my hand.

Like I can't. Yeah, yeah, you tried. The clasp when it's unfolded isn't quite big enough. So yeah, that's that's kind. Of a Yes. And the clasp is one of the things I love. Because it's so small. Sometimes I'll try on a watch and I love it, but the clasp is my entire back of my wrist. And then it is it it. I can't.

It's just so comfortable. But the Explorer 136mm is the most comfortable watch because it is just like that is the one where I'm always like, is it still there, is it still there? And then I'm like it's not even it has a professional clasp, so obviously. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it couldn't. It couldn't. Not like your OP's. That could just fly off at any time. OK, we're going to round out the collection in 2023 with two more OP's. Yes, because after the turquoise, I loved taking photos

of colorful watches. Then there was the yellow Love taking photos of the yellow watch. Then there was announced in 2023 last year at Watches and Wonders, bringing it back to Watches and Wonders, The Rolex Celebration. Yes. All the colors. All the colors. On one dial. Yes, I mean in true.

Celebration. Fashion because if you're going to celebrate these kind of like really bold release you know like the the these bold colors that were on these O PS then to just put them all on one dial like. That's just cool. Something I haven't thought of too. Is it really? So you had the line of colors, but then they have discontinued certain ones, but it's still Rolex based on the celebration thinks of it as a line. Those were, you know? A. Collection of watches and so I

thought that was really cool. Wasn't sure if I loved it. Said I would probably love it and end up hopefully getting one. Both of those things were true. I also had heard all about the process of how it was made. You have all of the different, you know, tampering where you're putting, tampering where you're putting down the colours. That has to happen in different phases. And then even you know the turquoise gets done over the turquoise, which is the the base colour of the watch.

Then you have the black lines go over the top like it's not perfect when you look at it under like with macro, because it really is. It's there's a lot going. On. It's very manual process and to me, as someone who loves, you know, more handmade things and really just the intricacies, I loved that. But it doesn't look like laser perfection. Like it? Was just shot out of a machine. It isn't. You sometimes feel a little like, oh, that there's a circle has a little wonk, a little.

Wonkiness to it's a. Tiny bit. It was also interesting to me because it did distinguish it from the what you might call the core 3O PS, which are the black dial, the blue burst style or the bright blue I think it's called and the silver dial because then it made it very clear that these colorful ones like the blue is not considered part of that. Color no, which I don't think anyone thought it was. No, I'm not saying that people thought it was, but it makes a clear.

Distinction there. It's like this is the celebration, which also watches and wonders. Sneaking it in watches and wonders tomorrow. Like does this mean they will go away? That that's one of the rumors. It's like. I mean once. You're saying celebration? Like, does all of it leave? I hope not, because I have friends who are waiting for some of the colors, waiting for the celebration. So, like, maybe we could celebrate for a few years. Just a few years, at least one

more year of celebration. But I think this is such a fun watch. This is probably the watch that when I look down at it, I smile the most. If someone asks me what I have on and they're like not a watch person, they're like, what is that? And that's really fun and. Also, they chose the turquoise as the base color for it. So there's more turquoise than anything else on that dial. And as I said last week, I I really think the turquoise is the best color of OP.

So I agree with everything they did. And before I got the watch, I actually made an Instagram post where I took my turquoise and glued on with eyelash glue. Don't worry, watch was No watches were harmed in this podcast, not in my whole photography. Some watches were harmed. Watches have been harmed. But I glued on all the little circles, so I actually looked up exactly how many circles in each color, which I thought was really fun. There's thirteen different

sizes. Like I went really nerdy and that made me appreciate and love that watch so much. So to be able to get one, my mind was actually blown. It still is. I still feel like when I go somewhere with watch people, they're like, what? And then they want. Like a week. Ago they want to see it like, can I try it on? Can I see it? And I just feel like, wow, that, you know, because I've had it for a while now and I still love the look of it, but it feels really fun.

It's one of those rare watches and sadly they are very rare. That really draws people to comment on it. And you know, most watches I've ever bought that, especially that first day I wear it. Yeah, I'm like someone's. Going to No one's going to look how beautiful. Yeah. No, they're not. Going to notice and no one notices. If they do they don't say anything so you never get that

validation. But I have seen you get a lot of validation with the OP celebration and a lot of it has been from watch people, but even a little bit from non watch people. Who? Just If we're starting, Yeah. If we're starting to talk about watches, though, they're like, oh, what are you wearing? No one has like net new. I've just been like what is that? So you know, but there is something fun because someone's like Lydia, what are you

wearing? And I just start pulling my sleeve and because it has that iconic look, people are like, what? So that that's. Really. It's also your most worn watch of the past year. Yes, I definitely have just been wearing it so much. And yeah, I I love it. You don't track which watches you wear every day, but just. From I have been just wearing it a lot. Yeah, that's. The one so that leaves only one watch left. Only one Rolex left I. Wonder what could it be? What model could it possibly?

Be I had to go really different, everybody. I can't just be the same. So I went with the red Opie, The Coral Red Opie. I'm going to blame this on the other half of Brit Pierce which is Watch Poppy James. He had the coral got to see it was like, wow, that is actually really fun. Like I always see this bright pop of color on him and. It just made you want. It didn't really feel like I wanted to have the green OP or the the pink, but I really wanted another one.

Well, also I had the green at the time. So you were kind of like, oh, the green, that's your color. Yeah, and the Coral Red. I was able to get one and I was so excited about it. And I love photographing that watch. And I will say that I think that one is the most fun of the colors because it will.

It's so bright. You can see that watch from like, you've taken photos of me, like in the forest, and it's a full body shot and I'm far away and you're like, your eye is immediately like signal red, I mean, or not signal red, coral red, coral red. But it's like it is. It almost feels like a safety color. Yeah, it does. If I was lost in the forest, I would like hold up my wrist. That would be the first thing. Very natural color. No at all.

I'm sure you find it in various things, certain animals, certain insects and flowers. But it's not. That often not that bold and kind of orange. E Nos. Of Red. It's really powerful. Thing for me is I always was very opposed to that color. That was my least favorite of the color because I don't prefer the color orange, just not and never have been an orange person. Then you put black next to orange and I'm very American.

I'm like that's Halloween. That's the only way it goes, which is absolutely I know I don't see orange if I see orange and black or if I see orange I'm like Halloween. But this one, after seeing it on James and he could be wearing, you know his pink sweatpants and it looked cool because it just you're not trying to match that watch with anything you're wearing And once that kind of some people could.

But for me, I once I kind of clicked like, wait, I could just wear that and have it be something that someone might actually notice has not happened yet, but hopefully it will that that would be. Really awesome. Only rescue cues. Yes, they see you and they're like, does that person need help? Flash, Flash. Flash. Flash. Well, tomorrow. That's the end of my Rolex collection. Yes, yes. Tomorrow we'll see all the announcements. We will, but we.

But we'll record before then. OK, but we'll see you tomorrow. Bye.
