Welcome to this Watch live. Hi, I'm Lydia Winters. And I'm Boo Booey. It's Friday. It's. Friday. And that means it's so close. I can't even handle it actually. But I'm a little disappointed because OK, there have been little teasers dropping. Mainly I see them on Instagram. I wake up in the morning and just lay there and scroll Instagram for a little bit before getting up. I think it's a very healthy activity.
This morning I woke up to Vu holding his phone upside down, and on the screen was the Oris teaser, which is very geometric. You know, gradients kind of abstract. Art and. That this year holding it upside down. And I just love that. That's our life right now. This year I feel like the watches and wonders teasers are not very teasy. Like there there there's not a lot of hints in them I'm not finding. Stuff. Maybe you were too good at guessing last year, and they were. Like we.
Got to shut it down. We can't give, we can't give good clues because Detective Bowie is on the case. That's right. But today, yeah, we're going to talk about Lydia's Rolex collection. Oh my God, A. Lot of people have asked for you to talk about this, including myself. Yes. I think this is going to be a fun trip down your yeah with Rolex. Yeah, it has been quite a while. Now.
I'm going to start off with the disclaimer of I know I'm very fortunate to be in the position to have access to buy new new Rolex because every every Rolex I have purchased has been new from R-80. So just imagine that I'm saying that a lot of times throughout this episode, but I'm not going to because then it gets really annoying. But I understand, and I wish that it was the case for everyone that they were able to get the watch that they wanted.
But that's not what this episode is about. This episode is about my journey with Rolex as a little Rolex baby. Yeah. I mean, Rolex makes up about a third of your collections. So I would say that you love Rolex. Yeah, I do really love Rolex. And so in 2015, that's when I got my first Rolex, my Rolex date just. Right, at the beginning of the year, January 2015.
January 2015. It was after VU had bought me the Cartier. I loved it so much, but we were going up north to see the Northern Lights in Obisco. The northernmost part of. Sweden in the Arctic Circle. And I was like, you don't wear a Cartier rose gold tank on a leather strap. I know that. I knew that much in 2015. You don't wear that up to the freezing cold outdoor if. You look at the the old expeditions, the A. Lot of leather straps. Right. Expeditions, all that stuff.
Leather straps everywhere. That's. True they. They would survive. It just does. It didn't. Feels you choose. A watch not only for what it can endure, but also the vibe. I guess also I was not going to take my precious little baby, I think. That. It was more of that.
So one night I told VU, hey, don't freak out, but tomorrow I want to go look at Rolex. He almost died, and it was back in 2015. When Rolex were much more readily available everywhere and it was very much that like, I was just looking at what color dial like that was really the only choice. And Vu was like, just get it today, just get it now. But I I think I waited a day or two because I was trying to decide between a silver dial or a white dial. I picked the white dial.
I love it so much. It's just like one of my favorite watches. Later date Just 36mm. You bought it on the Oyster bracelet with a flat bezel. No fluted. Yes, with a white dial, but not Roman numerals. Stick indices. Yes, but around the the minute markers there are Roman numerals. Very, very tiny. Yeah, it's not a, it's not a a date just dial that you can get anymore. So I really do like, and sometimes people comment and they're like, I love that one and then I'm like, oh, I picked that.
Not even sure all the reasoning behind it, but I picked. It often we buy watches and we make up an excuse for why we need that watch and and and. Yeah, I did. It started early. We're sure you said, like I need a watch for adventures now. But then within two months, we went up north into the freezing cold, Yeah, and photographed the Northern Lights. Which is an extreme. It is extreme adventure. You you wore your day test for
that well. Extreme temperatures, 'cause I just stayed in a hotel and and yeah, yeah. We weren't. We were in dog sledding across. No the. North Pole And then a month later we went on a really nice trip to Nepal and we went hiking in the lower Himalayas. That's true. Did quickly take it on two really fun adventures. Yes, and I stand by. This was the perfect watch for me for. A very long time for. Six years it was. That was like my ride or die.
That was the watch I wore everywhere, everywhere, which around the world. I miss the simpler times because it is there is, it is really a beautiful thing when there's this one watch that you wear for everything. Yeah. And. I envy those one watch people. OK. But I will say one thing that's kind of funny. Probably an oyster perpetual would have made more sense.
Why do you think that? Because I didn't really need the date, and it's very likely that over the course of those years, I grinded the gears by changing the date at the wrong the wrong time. And also, how often do you think the date was correctly set during those six years? Well I was wearing it every day so I and I would change it if the month was shorter or longer. Yeah, so I I but I do like the date and I do think as A1 watch it was perfect have a date.
So I'm going to stick with date just being perfect. Six years everywhere around the world with me all the time. It was your. Travel Watch. Travel Watch. It was your presentation watch when you were on a stage or doing something cool. I've worn it on. Yes, it. Was. Everything, everything. But then everything changed. Yes, Well, OK. Yes. First, I have one funny story about that watch because I've been wanting to tell it for a long time, but I haven't had a chance to.
We were in, we were travelling, we were going through London Heathrow Airport. Oh, this story. And you know, OK, different airports have different requirements, whether some you don't take off your watch, some you do. Even the same airport going multiple times can. Sometimes, many times I try not to take it off because just for me, there's no way I forget it. I mean, you've talked about also in London Heathrow like. Yeah, I flung 1. Your Speedmaster?
Yeah. So I'm going through and then they tell me that I need to put the watch on the tray. And so I try to do it like kind of, you know, discreetly to like, put it in our pocket and the guy who the security guy actually like goes we got a rolly here, like loud. And. He was like pointing like we got a rolly and I was like my face was so it was the one time in my life that I didn't want someone to notice my watch.
You know, you like, I'm I'm trying to be so low key because it's like they they said, hey you ought to take that off. So I, like, took it off discreetly. He's like, oh, you know, kind of looking at and then it's like we got a roll and the whole time I was. Like I was. So red and just like is it still going to be there when I get to the other side it? Was like. Terrifying. Yeah, the whole time. But what would I? Say who does that? But when I say this phrase a lot. Just like Rolly.
Got a Rolly here. So that guy has left a mark on us. He really did leave a mark. But in the moment, like true terror was like, especially when I think about like that was my one watch. That was my, you know, something that it was different than having other watches that I purchased over the years. And I still feel that way. Like it's this very special watch. Like now my sister Mindy loves wearing it. I have since bought a Jubilee bracelet to kind of change the look of it.
Now it really looks more vintage, even though it's only 2015. But it was just, I was so embarrassed, plus panicked that now everyone knew and I might take it, Yeah. You know, so you got a Hawkeyes keep. An eye on that I was, I was like the whole time. Security is like one of the security at the airport, especially on the inside of the airport side is not the best place, I don't think, for robbing people of a possession that they will notice
immediately. Yes, I agree. But also didn't think of that during. Just terrified. OK, now this is like going to be a five part episode because I'm taking all the so far. We've gone through the date, but that's from. 2000 but it. Was six years. Then in 2021 something happened which was called watch Instagram and just like watches watches, watches during the pandemic. Yeah, during 2020 started getting a few more watches, getting more into like watch,
just learning about watches. Then 2021 I saw the Turquoise OP for the first time and honestly I had not been super interested in any of the colors. Super's the wrong word. I thought they were fine for someone else, Fine for someone else. It really went that I was like you really should look at these colorful OP's. They're amazing and. Beautiful. And you were like I have a. Date Oh yeah. OP is basically the same exact thing. I do not stand by that statement anymore.
I have recounted. That is not correct. They are totally different. When you saw the turquoise, you really did like it. Yes, because I think for me, the fact that everyone had been calling it a Tiffany and I don't, I think that's inaccurate based on the colors. So the way VU is with words is the way I am with colors. I'm like, no. And when I really saw it, I was like, oh, there's so much more blue. It's so happy in a different way.
Like I really loved it. Was so surprised was able to get one in 2021. That was a bit before they became like the height of hype, those ones. And I just love it when I wear that watch. I think that color wise it's probably one of the most beautiful colors and and very, very versatile. I think it's the best Opie. I think it might, but I think it might be. It's my personal opinion, you know, it's just an opinion, but I I really do when I've tried on
all of them. The turquoise is the one that stands out the most to me, and it's also. Beautiful. It's a color that also when I've showed it to people, they've had the same reaction to me. Seeing it the first time, it's like it's different in person. The color is not the same as it looks online. Always it's true. And so when I show it to someone else, they're like, wow, that is such a pretty, like such a
beautiful color. When I wear it to Florida, it's like though that watch in Florida were made together, which makes me, you know, like they're made to be together. No. Everywhere. Iceland. People don't really enjoy looking at a very close up video of and and want to see this watch up close. We took it to Iceland and we made a YouTube episode about photographing. And our very. Short. Lived three weeks short lived YouTube channel. If you look up Lydia and Vu on YouTube, you can find that
episode. Yeah. You really get to see it, and that watch works so perfectly. Did actually that. So that is, yes. You're you're completely right. It looks gorgeous in like the tropical landscape of Florida, then absolutely beautiful in Iceland, which is like otherworldly and then when the leaves turn orange that. Yeah, so actually. Sometimes it's contrast, sometimes it's matching. It's just a. Great watch.
It's such a perfect watch. OK, I guess we're just getting through 1/4 of this, but the GMT Master 2 Root beer also got the same year and that one I bought for myself to kind of represent that. It was my ten year anniversary at work and also 10 years since I just moved to Sweden. To say that I changed my lifestyle and life would be an understatement. But basically to give you some, a quick image is that I I got my passport to move to Sweden.
That's the first time I had a passport and also when I landed in Sweden with all my stuff, I lived there. Then I never visited I. Never even being in Europe. It was my first time and I lived there.
Yeah, there's like a hilarious video where you know, I I took some videos of of this like journey there and I'm like, what do I do when I do my do my bags go to the place and my sister was just like Lydia. Yeah, so we'll also link to that on our website, the both videos because they are really fun and that one is like a little embarrassing because I don't know anything but also. To everything links to everything gives you. A vibe of how different I was.
And so for me, the GMT Master Two, it's like it's just like a boss watch. I love it. I wear it over my sleeve. I always just feel impossibly cool in it. Or yeah, just like impossibly powerful. Maybe it's the two-tone with the Rose gold. I tried it on so many times and kept going back and forth. Did. Take a long time about the size. But then ultimately was like, I don't care, I it it it. Yes, it feels big, but that's kind of the point of it for me, yeah.
Yeah, I feel like we're going to have to do this in two parts. Yeah, yeah, definitely. Let's get one more. In OK, one more is that then we moved to the next year and I, the yellow OP, had retired. I sent like a panic text to our AD on the day of watches and wonders. Here's the. Thing about That's what the lesson I learned in 2022 is. I only thought about watches and wonders in terms of what was coming, what I could like what was new but not what would. Retire I had.
Loved the turquoise and I had been thinking like what would be another color that would be very like bright and fun for photos and I had been like kind of thinking about the yellow you had tried to get me to get it. I had said no, but the yellow then I was like OK, I think maybe this is something I'd like to see it if I can get And then it retired and I sent like a panic text to our AD but you were lucky and he was able to find one and that yellow I just love.
It's a a little more mustardy and fun and cool and I think again the I've said it before but the Rolex OP is have like absolutely changed my photography, my excitement towards photography like they just make me feel more inspired by the color and the simplicity and the look of them and so having another color just yeah made it even better.
So much like sunflower photos and and you know, flowers and spring and yeah, I'm feeling very excited towards using it a lot more now in the summer and spring. When you do photography, you use your O PS as like you have this color palette and you have right now four choices. And so when you come across scenes, I've seen this happen before where we're out on a hike and you're like, oh that plant and that color I'm going to and it's like I'm going to use the yellow for. That right, like.
It's you you you think about. The complementary colors. Yeah, complement or would contrast or how these different watches will fit in. So I I think even though it I like to make fun of you for owning 4 O PS which we'll talk about the other ones in the next episode. It's also, it just makes sense for you. It does those different colors. I love them so much, so I guess that's where we're ending. We've made it through the date, Just the turquoise, the GMT master two and the yellow.
Yeah, so we made it through half. OK, that feels good. All right. Part one is half. Part One. And it's Friday. It's Friday. Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye. Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye bye bye. Have a. Great weekend. I'm sleeping on tomorrow.
