Welcome to this watch LIFE. Hi, I'm Lydia Winters. And I'm Vu Bui, and you still sound a little under the weather, but we're going to keep on trucking on. Oh keep on trucking on I. That's a little too much energy for me. We are still doing our late night podcast. 9:00 PM. Podcast What's wrong with? It it is loosey goosey life over here. This watch this this loosey goosey watch.
At Watch Medicine asks which dress watch from the Holy Trinity brands would you guys choose if you had the choice? OK, well, first of all, for those of you who might not know, the Holy Trinity brands are Patek Philippe yes, Vassarol and Konstantin yes, and Otamar Pigay. Yes, they are. Nothing sounds good the way I'm saying it right now. It sounds a little extra. A little. OK, like, but let let's be clear. Like it doesn't really mean
anything. No, I mean Holy Trinity, I believe it's really feels like it's enthusiast driven this naming convention. It's kind of like the older yes manufacturers who have a lot of notoriety. Yes, but it's funny. So it's not the oldest manufacturer. No, no, no. And it's not even the ones with the most notoriety. You know, it's just like these three that the overtime or at some point in time were chosen as like, Oh yeah, this is the so-called Holy Trinity. Yeah, the big, the big three.
The big yeah, the big three. I mean, they are huge names in watchmaking. I would say though that you know, as much as I love Vasharan, I think if you asked the average person they would know Patek first, then AP, and then almost no one would know Vasharan. Average. Person and that's because both Patek and AP are in pop songs and hip hop songs and in cultural references in movies and TV shows. You know Patek like they're out there, right? AP also a bit, but Vasharan not not right now.
It we're not in their moment right now in terms of a wider recognition. So it makes it hard to call them the Holy Trinity. Maybe they're the Holy Trinity of watch enthusiasts. Well, but I again, it's kind of like, are they? I think there's a there's a great article by Fratello from only from June this year. And it's talking about like, is it time to revise the Holy Trinity of watchmaking? And it's still a really hotly debated yeah topic, which makes which makes it fun.
Yeah, but for the sake of this question. Well, for one thing, I object to even just the whole religious Holy Trinity naming of things. OK, because that doesn't always fit everyone anyway. Yes, but we're going to take this at face value because we're going to do it. The question was asked in good faith. Which was not What do you think of the holy Christ? It's like, here's an easy way to say that's to. Be fair. OK, OK.
You're going first. This is not surprising that boo's like, well, first of all, your question, no. No, I'm not saying the question is wrong. I'm taking the question at face value. The premise of. Holy. Trinity. Of Holy Trinity OK as a watch thing. Go ahead, Boo. Go for it. OK. So I am also going to take, because I have to do some interpretation here, like having the choice, I'm going to take that as like being able to kind of afford as if I could afford it. And you would buy.
If I liquidated by my watch culture right now, I could afford it, right? Not just like the IT. It's not the same as someone saying like if you could just get for free any watch, any dress watch from the Holy Trinity, what would it be? Because then I'd probably pick something just astronomical and ridiculous. Yeah, I would have gone higher price for sure. I tried to think, would I wear it?
Is this within the realm of something I could potentially buy at some point and also be willing to wear? OK, go for it. I picked should not be surprising. I think I've talked about this watch before, the Vasharon Constantine Historique American 1921, the 40mm size. Could you imagine if people were like, what is that watch and you had to say that full long name all the. Time that why you're like, is that why the general public doesn't go they're like, I
can't, I can't follow that. Is this word? Is this dollars per words? They're like. OK, so there's so much about this watch that I love. OK, number one, it's an historical reinterpretation, yes, of a watch from 1921. And I just, I love reissues, reinterpretations of vintage watches. Like, it's just something I really appreciate a lot. It was designed for Americans. I'm American, so that seems to be the Holy Trinity. Is coming to America.
At certain points, Vashran has marketed it as you know, I haven't like, I haven't been able to get down in the truth, you know, like. Find the original. Find the original designer and interview them. OK, They're probably not around, I guess. Yeah. OK. So that it was for driving, right? So you could have your hand on the wheel and you could read the time without rotating your wrist or rotating your head or using your brain in any kind of way. OK. Perfect. I do.
I do prefer not to use my brain. 'Cause I'm pretty sure. I could be in for that I will say. Tell but anyway, I love the layout of the 40 mil. The 40 mil and 36 are different, but I'm I'm talking about the 40 mil. So OK, the for those who don't know this watch, it's like this squarish cushion case. It's got a round dial. The dial is rotated 45°, so it's not in line with what you would typically think. So the 12:00 is where the 1:30 would be if the watch was had a
standard dial. I've seen this watch and when you start describing it I'm like, what? The SUB seconds are at 3:00 on the dial, but they're at 4:30 if you don't account for the 45° rotation of the dial. So I think that. Makes it. Very. Clear, but it is very cool. It is very cool watch. It's a watch I completely love. I have tried it on a bunch of times and I did like the 36mm but I didn't like the combination of how the watch and the strap fit me. O this haens to me all the time.
It's like there's a watch. Usually there's like a version in 36, an one in either 40 or 41 and you're a golden wish for a 30. Yeah, I wish for a 38. I always wish for a 38. I think with this watch a 38 for me and what I both like and the size of my red. Would be perfect. It would be heaven. Yes, well, Holy Trinity. Oh. See, I'm keeping. I'm keeping with the. Theme OK, but why did you pick rose gold?
Why did I? Cause you typically you typically rose gold, you're kind of like for my skin tone, don't love it a lot of rose gold. Because I think Vasharans rose gold works on me. I've tried it on, I like it, you like it. I would also do yellow gold or I don't know, they have a yellow gold in the current collection. I do not know. I know they don't in the 36mm. Yeah, I don't think they do in the 40 right now. Yeah, in. 36 they only have white gold and the pink the Rose
gold. I actually was going to pick this exact same watch. I did venture out because when you said but I. Called it very quickly I. Was like, fair enough, but also I was going to pick the 36, but much to the surprise of everyone, including myself, because, you know, I don't want to pay those white gold prices. You can't tell, but the white gold looked much better on me for this particular model. I thought it was amazing.
I didn't love the pink gold. The pink gold with a different strap though because you only got to try it on with the strap that came. With the red strap, yeah, which is a little I. Think if you changed that strap that pink gold could work really well. On no, but I just really like the like how clean it looks in white gold. It just looks really beautiful. It sets off the dial a little. More for me. This isn't your choice. No, it's. So what's your choice? Well, I decided obviously I'm
going to go with AP, OK? I mean, neither of us are Patek people. We've we've been very vocal, I think. It's more that Patek has told me through their advertising, through their product placement, through kind of everything about them, that I'm not for them. That's true. That is how I feel about Patek. You're an. Acquired taste and it's a no. Yeah, they have not acquired this taste.
Very true, so I picked AP which obviously after having gotten my first AP which still feels wild, by Royal Oak 33mm which I truly think is like one of the most beautiful watches in the world. Like I can't stop looking at it when I have it on my wrist. They have a version that I have seen only online, but when I see someone like have it on an image, I know immediately that it's this particular watch. So it's a full gold, but the frosted gold, which is very cool.
They did a Carolina Bucci special edition 37mm and it this was back in 2016. So I absolutely cannot get this. There's like, I, I don't even think they come up online It Yeah. And it was a very, but like a very small amount. She's a jewelry maker and she has this signature Florentine texture finish. She brought that to AP, where now they actually do that on a lot of their watches, like the new 39mm Royal Oaks, which are
all awesome. But I was like, hey, if I'm dreaming here, I'm going for the one that I really want. Yes. And no one said it had to be the current collection. It has a mirror dial. It just looks so cool. The silver with this frosted gold. I'm honestly when I finally see one in person. And you're calling this a dress watch? Yeah, it's full gold. I mean, come on. No, I, I was. Only kidding, but like, if it's full goals, I'm saying it's a dress watch, dress, watch price. So hold on, hold on.
Yes, I would wear the Yeah Sure seed. Dweller. Yeah, absolutely. Full gold. The reason you buy that is because you have big wrists and a lot of money and you're like, I will wear this with my suit. I think you could absolutely like someone could pull it off. Fair enough. I think Dress Watch is very much open to interpretation and I I do. Accept. Exactly. I'm actually surprised you didn't go through like criteria of dress watch at the start.
The thing? Is I felt like if it's gold and you have to spend a lot on it, you can wear it with a dress. That's how I. I feel that even if it was made of plastic, you could wear it, you know, as a dress watch. Like I, I really think that rules.
Rules are for fools. I I just think although there are best practices for many, many things in life and there are real rules for many things in life, I don't think fashion should be something that there are rules because you're not hurting anybody by doing things a little bit differently. I think that's a good, that's a good segue into a topic I need to speak about on the podcast because we have not yet. Oh, oh, really on the podcast. Wait, what? Hit the fall season? The autumn?
Yeah. Therefore, people, prepare yourself. I will wear my watch over my over. My sweaters. Not everyone likes that. People really dislike it severely, but it's going to happen because you know what? Otherwise I can't see it and I just want to see my watch. So, so I'm just giving a quick this is like a warning. If that's going to bother you, too bad. So I forget the name of the Italian gentleman who was known for this back in I think the 80s. Yes, wearing it over his shirt sleeves.
So I've tried to wear my watch over my shirt sleeve, but because the shirts that I wear do not have very tight sleeves, I get a lot of bunching and and you know, I don't wear dress shirts where they're thin enough that it would be nice like that or mostly denim shirts. So it doesn't work for me to wear it over my sleeve. Otherwise I totally would. Johnny Agnelli, yes. Yeah, I like why have this beautiful watch and then hide it under a sleeve? So sad. Exactly.
I look, I know it's very divisive, but I feel like since we were moving towards anyone can do whatever fashion they want. Since we're talking about that felt like it's a good it's a good time to warn everyone. There will be images of you wearing your watches over your sleeves. I did think about it and we have a question to answer that we'll do tomorrow, which is about like what's the best time of year to wear a watch? Like, do you have a time of like a, a season that you enjoy where
he watches? And I was like, yeah, 'cause I love. Well, yeah. Nope. OK. We have another This is a quick and easy question from at Time the Destroyer. Would you ever consider moving to Switzerland? Yeah, I try to consider most things at least a little before I say no. Like a little consideration. I mean, I am a EU citizen, a Swedish citizen actually. So I have an EU passport. I'm not an EU citizen. No, evidently that's. Not actually how it. Works.
I'm still American. You don't know anything. Isn't Europe a state? I'm a Swedish citizen, yeah, and an American citizen. And so I could live in Switzerland, yes. What? Yes. But it would still wait. You still need a work permit. You. Yeah, because. Switzerland is is not in the Schengen zone, Yeah, it is in the EU, yes. So your passport, you don't get to just live directly in Switzerland, I don't believe unless there could be a deal with anyway we're getting. Way in the.
Weeds we're. Getting way in the weeds. The whole thing is that's not the point. My answer. How much paperwork? My answer is yes. I would consider it. If it's too much paperwork, no. No. So yeah. I used to think that I'd live pretty much anywhere in Europe, right? Like this is when I was younger. When I was younger, almost every place I'd travel to though, I would for a short period of time while I was there, I was sure I was going to move there, right?
So my first time I went to Paris, I was like, oh, wow, OK, I'm going to move here. OK, not forever, but I'm just. Like I'm going. To live here, at least live here for a few years. Like absolutely 100% and my first time in London. Oh, I'm moving here. Like I love it here. Don't even have to learn a new language. I'm moving here. This place is amazing. First time to Munich in Germany for sure. I'm moving here like not too far away from the Bavarian mountains, like.
Oh, OK. That's really nice. Amazing. Like I'm moving here. This all happened on like one work trip. My first Europe trip ever. OK. And you were like all I will live everywhere. New city. I was like, I'm going to live here too. How will I have enough life to live in all these places? I think it's really good we found each other because my my ex-husband was like went to Paris once and was like Europe is the worst. So I was like, well. His loss.
Take this, I will move there and I will live there forever. So we have both, though having lived here, right, become much more picky about where we think we would live. I think you lived well. No, I think you lived your whole life in Florida before I lived in New York and then California. And although I've moved a lot, I didn't move that far. I did live in Vietnam for two years. So I guess I forgot that place. Yeah, that's. Quite far and completely different life. Yeah, I like. Yeah, OK.
But what I meant was like, Europe was very foreign to us, and so everything just seemed amazing. And then as you spend time in Europe, then you're like, you know the things you like, you know the things you like less than you know the things you don't like. So we've only been to Switzerland twice so far. Very quick trips, but very quick. Fairly quick trips and we didn't get to see a ton. However we have spent time now in Geneva.
We did that I watches and wonders and we also went and visited Jeja Lacoute. So we have been in Watch Valley. Yeah right. Valid issue. And that is a place I could consider living. You want to live in, you're like, I don't want to live in Geneva. I want to live in the valley. But I mean. I don't even want to live in Stockholm. Like we live in the countryside, right? I like to live near Stockholm, but I don't want to live in Stockholm. So I'm done with cities. Kind of.
I'm just kind of done with cities. And then, like, that, valley was gorgeous. Yeah, it was. I mean, it was so beautiful. You're surrounded by nature and mountains. You're surrounded by watchmakers. Like that sounds like an amazing place. So I, yeah, really, really into it. But I do love Sweden a little too much. So I when I think about my life, I want to live in Sweden. But would I move to valid issue for a little while? Yeah, that sounds pretty cool. Yeah, call us up, move us there
to work on something cool. Or something cool. For a while, yeah. Yeah, yeah. The The funny thing though, is you, you and I have both experienced this when we're talking. Unfortunately, it's it's always Americans in the US like, oh, yeah, no, I live in Sweden. They ask about like, the cheese and the chocolates, the watches. We're like, no. And then I'm like we have. That's that's what. We have IKEA, yeah, which is the way you would say here about IKEA. IKEA and we have meatballs, yes.
Yes, but actually very Sweden's on. The but also but also Sweden makes great cheese and chocolate. Yeah, that's true. And some good watches. Yeah, and Minecraft. And Minecraft. Sweden makes a little bit of everything, stuff like. Don't do Sweden. No, Yeah. Bye, everyone. Bye.
