The following is a presentation of play Fly Sports properties. So we had a really good he went on Saturday and UH in all three phases we played you know, confimary football, which is what we need to do to be able to to win games. Our goals is to play our best football in November and we want to finish strong. So we got back to work, you know, this morning. The guys really focused on the task at hand.

Really proud of where our team is. You know, the coaching staff has stuck together the entire season and always UH worked to uh to improve and get better, really good practice. A strong opponent in the in Indiana, UH playing for the Brass Patoon, as you know, so get a chance to get back in the woodshed one more time, which is which is really important to us. So we got a lot of work to do this week and we're really focused. You are looking live at the Gradual Hotel Rock Bar rooftop

on top of the Gradual Hotel here in these Lansing. This is Sparta. I'm your host, Jason Strayhorn, a long with my co hosts oh Wiley and jay U with the Sources shoot you always switching up on Sources call crik Adam Schefter. Yes, sir, sources say, gentlemen, we are now facing the the Hoosiers from Indiana just five and five and trying to get bowth eligible. What are your sources say? If anyone, well before, if anyone can tell me what the hell of Hoosier is, it would be me

absolutely yeah, you know, I mean it was a long ago. There's a war, and I guess they said there was something going on with even would have their ears cut off? Whose ears? That is exactly what it was. It's all I ever heard. Coach Baldwin said that in a team meet and when we're playing Indiana Indiana one year year, well we got me after the Northwestern come back, it was yeah, we got and they got fired. The next week he said that in the team meeting they got,

they got fired, and that that obviously found whose year it was. I remember that Don Cougar mellen Champ was singing and you think you down forty two to six or something said, I will tell you a crazy story about this about when we played at Indiana, so scene said, we preached we uh Northwestern, it's come back to college football. Still still stand today, excited, you know, everyone's excited. You know the season is going to be turned around. We go into play Illinois, I'm sorry, Indiana, and

everything is against us. The head coach, Terry Hebner, passed away a couple of weeks and that was the day that they were dedicating that day to him. Hebner's rock was out there in the middle of the field in the fifty was John Cougar Mellencamp singing this is U Country with the acoustic guitar,

and I remember it was just an eerie feeling that day. Well, you know why, let's let's take them all in behind the scenes where we're standing at eerie like lake Cabin whatever it was, the shining I mean in that movie the woods of the back country of Bloomington, and we remember David Thomas, he's wearing the Michael Myer mass and knocking on people's windows slide or it was like all the coaches are at the bar. They kind of knew the

rights on the wall. They're drinking, getting crazy. I mean at this point, like coach for drinking dirty Friday night. Yeah, at this point, I mean. And so from that point of view, let's fast forward to the game and we go back in the locker room before kick off. You know, dear one, when you go back, it was just quiet. It was airy feeling. We go back out there, the game's going on, and I look, I'm not gonna see this teammates name. I'm

not gonna call hi out in blast. This dude was knocked out snoring on the bench during the game. Wow, that snoring during the game. Snoring not okay, surprised you didn't see it when he was on the side. So I was just like, you know, counting the second to when the athletic it was gonna come out and stif on the shoulder because it was funny stories like remember Devin Thomas, he went back to back we did. We did bubble screens. A bubble screen he called one. Takes it to the

house, it's a flag, brings it back. They they run the same bubble screen again, takes it to the house. That's when we feel like, oh, Devin Thomas should have been playing this entire time right, just sitting in the bench, was kind of playing a role player, playing special teams. And then that following year obviously Dvid Thomas, Adam and Rackliss and go thro but we talked about you coming in and we talked about this is that game that we need to go bowling. We need I mean sparanation.

We want a postseason. We talked about last season eleven to going to the Peace Bowl, playing in a big, big bowl game against Pittsburgh, and we can't have the drop off from last season to this season not going to a bowl game. No, you don't want that because the bowl game gives you those all important practices that people want to have, especially coaches, to develop young players for the following season. The one wrinkling all of this is

the December fifth Transfer Portal day that's been assigned by the NCAA. Gods, who knows what that's going to look like. On that day, the bowl game will be announced probably somewhere a little bit around that same time. So stay tuned. This is going to be fireworks when you talk about recruit and what's going on in the transfer portal this year. Look out, there's gonna be movement happening that no one expects in coming out going all over the country.

So it's gonna be an exciting My sources are gonna be really hitting out. Adam Shefterdy gonna but you know, let's let's let's let's fast forward to to this week's game, all right, and uh from past from last I snug to the Sezars. Uh sweet behind the scenes work you guys is going into sweep the sweet Euil Caesar sneak sneaky blinders with little steaky fingers. And if you're into that kind of thing, the Spartans, make sure you go

to Caesar Sportsbook app. The Spartans are ten and a half point favorites according to ESPN projector three point eight percent chance to win this game. So if you want to throw a couple of shotos on the Spartans, hit that Cason Sportsbook app. If you're into that kind of thing, you're into that kind of thing. I mean, guys, I don't think you have to qualify it as legal. You keep saying end of that kind of thing. People

do it. It's legal. Just don't be be be responsible. But whatever, you don't believe any of this craziness because we need our guys to be focused, because we know that they have nothing truly to play for, right like we are one game away, IU is three and seven coming in.

You know they can be spoilers for the season. But they're gonna come in and give us their best shot regardless of what you know they put on from a record standpoint, and you know, you looked at what they did last week GAUS with Ohio State, Yeah, not much, not much at all. Fifty six or fourteen. Ohio State came in, put up about six hundred and sixty plus yards of offense on the Hoosiers, and the Hoosiers I think scored in the first quarter and another garbage shutdown at the end of the

ball game. Other than that, it was all Buck guys the entire game. So you're right. I think this is one of those spoiler alert type ball games too too, when you look at they don't have anything to play for. But there may be some guys that's trying to get some film because simmer fifth is coming around. They may be trying to get out of there and transfer to some other school that's gonna give them better to get to the

NFL. Absolutely, you know we've been in this situation, you know, as Farmer spartans, you know we've been in a situation where we didn't have the best season and all you had to look forward to is, hey, we're going out there to play spoilers. If we're not going to a ball game, they're not going to a ball game as well. So that's the mindset I think Indiana's going to be coming in here with and these guys are gonna come out here, you know, try to play, try to put

some more work on film for other schools or for the next level. So they're gonna come out ready to play. And this is an evenly matched game statistically, you know, so you have to look at the look at those things, points wise, points per game. Indiana scoring twenty two point four points per game while Michigan State's twenty four point eight you know, points allowed. Thankfully, they're allowing thirty five points per game. That's we're only allowing

twenty five points per game. So that's the biggest differential. That is the biggest differential, right, it's allowed, But everything else, like from passing

and rushing, it's even. Yeah, and so it's it's expect another tough battle from a standpoint of this ain't just a win for us like automatic, you know, we got to come with it a lot of emotions that are going to be high, because, like we talked about, it is senior day and a lot of our spartans that we've seen throughout the years, you know, think about these guys also were some of those COVID players too, so you know, some of these guys do have an additional COVID year that

they can tap into. But to your point, they may be also thinking

about, all right, what can I do at another spot. From a standpoint, I'm interested to see if we're going to truly tap into the transfer portal like we did in the past, that we have a solid class we're building coming in and it's like, do we want to put all of our eggs and energy into guys who are coming in fresh from high school and build the culture from or you know, are we going to bring in that you know, playmaker or difference maker that we need from a holes filling from what

we don't have right now? You know, I think that that's a that's a big subject right there. We talk about like what is the balance, what's the mix going to be between high school players and portal players that are going to come in. From mel Tucker's standpoint and looking at the player personnel side of things, and the general manager, Saye Khalif, who has been

doing a phenomenal job in the recruiting department from Michigan State. You know what, I think one of the biggest determining factors are going to be what are the outcomes of those eight players. You know, we know that now the Washington Now County or Michigan State Police have now returned their report over to the prosecutors. What is going to happen with those eight defensive players. Are they going to be allowed to come back? Are they not? Are they gonna

be suspended and definitely remove from the team. That's gonna determine. I think how many portal players are, how many scholarships are available, how many players they have to go out and get in the portal But there will always be a mix. It's never gonna be one hundred percent of one and zero of the other. It's always gonna be a mix. It just determines. We

just need to know what will the full mix be? The percentages And you know asking you guys, how was it when you had senior Day coming back in East Lands if you can remember those that that last time you were able to suit up and play a game in Spartan Stadium. Uh, you know,

senior day. It was very emotional for me, you know, coming to uh, you know, being a fan of Michigan State, coming to Michigan State, playing there and just the reigning the theme that was going on, you know, coaches saying coach coach D'Antoni was big on saying, send the seniors out as winners, and you know, so that was important for me. And it was a very pivotal game for me as well. You know, we were playing Penn State, you know, to solidify ourselves a

good bowl game. You know, we were teeter right along the same line as this team where we're six and six going into the uh, you know, six and five going into this game. You know, you win that fifth game. That's the difference from playing in Detroit in a Quickling Bowl or playing in Orlando, you know, and you know and getting some sunshine. So that was the mindset of that, you know, going out there playing and uh, you know, we had a you know, that was a

very you know, cool game or the atmosphere was great. It was under the lights at Spartans team against Penn State, and it was a rivalry game. So you're playing for that Land Grand Trophy. So all the excitements there and we were able to fortunately pull that game out, you know, to you know, to win that end. But it was just very special. I remember specifically staying out on the field longer, you know, taking a look at you know, everything out there, going around, giving high five

to the students and the fans because you know it's something. You know, these people have been there supporting you for four years of your career and you want to make them proud. But yet you know they're out there supporting you, so's it was very special. It's gonna be it's an emotional time, but you know these players have to put that aside, wants the whistle blows

and then those emotionals can return after the game's over. I remember that like it was yesterday, because we were like once we won that game, we were running like we're going bowling, like we like this Christmas like Christmas presents. I do remember, you know, Coach d in the ritual of you know, we we will walk out with before you will walk around the stadium with that rose right with the flower, and then you meet your parents and

then you know, once you step over with your parents. I have the picture of my parents' house is like, you know, you kind of all when it all settles in, you start getting emotional because you're like, one, you got to still play the game when you do the presentation, and then two like this is the last time you do strap up in the green and white, and you know all the stuff that led up to it.

You know, it's been a crazy ride getting to that that point. And then you also just thankfully I didn't we both didn't have a loss on that senior day. We played Purdue and we shut them out, which was a good, good, good feeling to have, and then we went bowling, and so it was a great atmosphere. I think it was the point of like I didn't care who was there. I just wanted to win and and and go out on top because you can all you're gonna always remember that last

loss in Spartan Stadium if you do lose your senior day. And I don't, I didn't want that to happen. Absolutely, What about you spot what about senior You an't know about my senior day because you see it all the time. Yeah, that was a nice That was a nice out of right there, because people think that that was like the Ohio State game for some reason. But no, we were wearing the green jerseys and we were at home and that was my senior day against Illinois, and it was nice.

It was one of the only senior. I was the only senior on the offensive line. You know, it was a tough year. We had to lead a lot of young guys, try to get them up to speak similar to this year. And you know, the offensive line coach Golden pat Rule had the offensive line gas come around me and say they were picked. I was like no, I was fighting it for a while, was like you got to carry You're not gonna be able to carry me. And sure they were able to give me up. They got me off the ground and then

I just went with it. And now it's a picture that that's all over it, but you guys won't stop using. Its amazing. But yeah, no, that was a phenomenal memory. And you're right, you always want to go out winners on your senior day because it does last for a lifetime. Honestly. Yeah, while we're talking about that senior day moment there, and what I have to say is to Spartan nation, Spartan fans all across the globe, and especially the ones that have the ability to be here.

These guys poured their blood, sweat, and tears into this program. You know, there's a lot of stuff that they do behind the scenes that no one knows. You know, everyone sees, you know, the final products on a Saturday night or Saturday midday or noon game or whatever. But these guys pour their heart, their bloodshot and tears into this sacrifice. Is staying away from their families for you know, vacations, different things like that,

all to deliver a good product for you. I know the season is and where we're gonna get where we wanted to be this year, but we need Spartanation to come out and show out this game to propel these players to the next level. We need these guys. We need you to show these guys to support and the hard work and cheer loud for them just like they've been doing, you know, to put a good product out there for you guys.

If you leave Spartan Stadium on Saturday and you're and you have and you're still talking and your voice isn't hurting, you did not do your job well, said Jay, Because last year in the Indiana game on the road, that game, if you can recall was very close until last minute turnover pick six by cal Holiday. You know why that game was so close. That crowd from Indiana believe that they could beat Michigan State and it was in that ball game until the very bitter end. That was a very loud crowd in

a small stadium down in Indiana and Blowmington, Indiana. You have to make it tough on them there when they only have three wins this season. Spartan Nation, you gotta come out. Is the last time you have to bear the weather here at home, and you'll be missing football when it's gone. Trust me, you'll miss it. So soak it all in dressing layers, lots of layers, because I'll be doing the same thing, and so will

shoot you on the sideline running out there. I mean, so look, we're with you, every one for all, all for one on this one. Giving away tickets this game. You're definitely giving away tickets. Otis yes, yes, So look out on the social and this is part of m s U enter to win. And you know it's the Lincoln the bio link

in to bio man. So line up, we'll wore the tickets Friday Friday noon Friday and noon, we'll select and be able to come to h the East Lands and and enjoy the game and cheer on our seniors for Senior Day. You know, back to this this matchup, and when I look back last year, you know, I was a regular alum and fan and stands watching. How'd you feel up there? How was that? Oh? It was good? I mean, you know, kudos to IU because you know

I was recruited there and then they sold that dream. What you see now like the atmosphere, got the whole thing, the whole stadium. I mean what they put building like they added renovations. It looks great. But if I look at that offense in our defense, you know what they did last year that was successful that I'm sure they're gonna probably try to do it again,

is that they kept doing the quick route, so quick passes. It was like no huddle, quick fast, get us tired, chart sub it, you know, subbing us in in and out, and it was really quick. Bubble screens, jailback screens, set it up. Then they run the ball. So see that again, because I feel like for us, you know, when you got high tempo offense and you have the defense that has to respond there's no chances for you to look to and huddle up and

regroup. It's quickly like you need to know what you got to do for this game, and I expect you to come out with guns blazing because they have nothing to lose and we have one game to gain. So we'll see the difference in like the momentum and the energy because we got to start fast and strong. Definitely gotta start fast. You gotta start strong. And when you look at Tom Allen, he's a guy who has definitely had his players

ready to play. Indiana has always been a very good post offensive team, but with Tom Allen, he's brought along the defense as well, which was a problem for Michigan State a year ago. If you can recall that Jau Yeah, absolutely, you know the defense you know gave Michigan State a lot of headaches. And it's gonna be similar. You know, this game. They're gonna try to, you know, get pressure in the backfield for us. They're going to try to limit our big play. You know, that's

the big thing. You know, you're sitting in a defensive room, it's like we can't have explosive plays you know happening on us. So they're going to try to do that. They're going to try to make sure they stop the run because the past two games, Michigan State has found success running the football, So they're going to try to stop the run and put the ball in you know, make sure that we have to throw and become one dimensional.

So in order for us to be successful offensively, we have to put the ball in our playmaker's hands, similar to what they did last year, you know, quick screens, tunnel screens, different things like that. We have to be able to do that, and we have to have to have to be able to run the football. So straight the question for you. The past two weeks, you've seen this offensive line starting to come into themselves.

You know, you see them starting to have that momentum. They're giving Peyton Thorn protection in a passing game and they're opening lanes for the running backs to run. So, like, what more do you want to see from this offensive line? For me, what I want to see from the offensive line is just more improvement, keep building upon what they've started. To me

in Illinois, that was a different line that I seen in Illinois. In Champagne on the road, the windy conditions, they really had a sense of urgency when it came to passing off the twist and stunts and the blitzes and really firing off the ball with leverage and creating space for the running backs to be able to run the ball, which takes pressures off off of the quarterback and opens up a lot of lanes for receivers because the linebackers now are getting

blocked. They're in the ball game now. Instead of just you know, having the defensive line eat up all the blocks and not allow offensive linemen to get to the second level. They've been blowing those guys off the ball getting to the second level, which reads having on a defense and makes defenses one dimentially. Hey, like they start guessing they're on eggshells, they're on roller skates. They don't know. Okay, they got to sell out in order

to stop the run. And when they start doing that, if they think it's a run and it's a pass, and we'll guess what happens on the back wide open on the back end. So that's what I see happening. That's why the trenches are so important. If you have a dominant line, then you can win most games. You heard it in the beginning of the season. And we go back to that statement that Xavier Henderson said, So

we're gonna go as far as that offensive line takes us. And this is nothing truer than it is right now these past two weeks office of linemen and our defensive lignment. As true, he stood up, stepped up, uh, and you see a different like possession of nasty like they're hungrier right like. You see this this pizazz of like as soon as they get done, it's straight to it. And let's not forget that that was a game day

stat brought to you by I Hop. The two by two by two breakfast combo equals one delicious meal enjoying two pancakes, two eggs your way, and two pieces of bacon for own five dollars only at I Hop. Hurry in and enjoy this deal for a limited time don then only. Price and participation may vary. Restrictions apply. Otis you talked about last year, Indiana, you know, getting the ball in the playmaker's hands fast defensively. You know, I think I agree with you. I think they're gonna be They're gonna

try to do the same thing. So how do you have to be defensively, you know, in order to stop that because they're gonna try to do this quick quick passes, these tunnel screens run to suck the secondary up and then try to go over the top. So what keys do you have to read? Yeah, I think it's like leverage or knowing your responsibility. I mean, we know that when a bubble screen happens, we need the corner

to come up and be aggressive and set the edge. You know, the edge is kind of a fluid type of landing point, so when that bubble happens, a corner needs to set the edge and turn it back into the other ten that's pursuing, right, and so it's quick to the ball.

I think we used to had that two minute whistle drill that absolutely hate it back and then you know back when we were playing because like you can go straight long post route, we got to defend it and then you got to run there and you know, break it down, say you know Spartan's on three one two three and then run back to the huddle and get set.

And it was training us for this all this no huddle offense, and like you have to have stamina and you have to be able to persevere through those long, long balls that go straight down the field and then the short ones where you got to pursue. And we had a little bit of issues me and Jay. You talked about this about our pursuit, our pursuits for the first half of last week's game. Angles was a little bit off where you got to be able to turn in turn that that runner into the other guys

pursuing that. Do your job, just don't sell out and give him more space to run down the sideline. So that's where it's going to be an advantage for us is if we play our ball, we play our responsibilities, do our run fits, we'll be we'll be in control of this game. I'm gonna ask you us defensive beat, honestly, what does it take in order to set the edge as a cornerback or anybody that's out there on that edswer You need a lot of talent or is it something else that you need

in order to set the edge? Man? This where that drill? Like you know, you do these drills every day, right, and so it gets really like tiring, you get tired of doing it. But when this happens in games, it's a no brainer. It should be second nature is when you attack the defender, you're gonna have a blocker. You have a receiver, you might have that slot coming down. It might be a jail based screen from the outside receiver, or you might have the slot doing the

bubble. Somebody's gonna come block you. So whoever is that block that the guys get being blocked needs to attack that defender or that office of receiver and shed him. And we're not saying shed inside. When then you allow him to run outside on the sideline. No, you need to shed him inside and then set the edge. You know who does a great job. It's Chuck Browley. I mean that dude comes up and he will come at you. He's not selling out where he's gonna take his body and eliminate everything.

He's legit hitting you with the force and then making the runner make a decision. And when he makes a decision, he goes outside. And then that guy gots a go inside. And you got the linebackers, you got the d lineman that are hitting that guy. And you know one two punchs is an assist tackle. Yeah, you're talking. You talk about that shedding and keeping outside contained because as a runner, you're always taught hash number sidelines.

That's where you want to go because you don't want to cut back in because the pursuit coming from your home in there exactly and offensively. If you have your guys, you're lineman doing the right thing going downfield like that we call elephants on parade, you know, going down there, you're supposed to go hash number sidelines and you cut back in and get tackled. Those line are gonna be pissed at you, and you don't want to go back to the

hall the wood pissed off lineman. No you don't. You don't want to do that to be able to full and get to those those little small defensive backs and roll them up right and then go chase your buddy down in the end zone or us down. You talk about rolling up back in the day. I'm saying back in the day like it was a long time ago.

But cut off you were able to just cut through the lineman and get you to the un So you have to strategically hit him with outside edge arm free if it's coming this way, and vice versa, where you're able to if they come inside. You're taught it's like a defense end You're taught to spin around and then tackle right, but you just can't just lay yourself out there and then knowing that you're gonna give this guy Morris room to run straight down

the sideline and the purduce chasing. Oh man, it sounds like it not a lot of talent. Sounds like a lot of heart is what's needed. Toughness, guts, intestinal g u t singism you know about. That's a new one. That's awesome. Oh man, those guys, we expect a very blustery, cloudy, cold day in Spartan Stadium aka the Woodshed. What do you think the game is? How? How's this game going to play out for Senior Day for the Spartans? Uh? Personally, I think you

have to control the emotions. Like coach D'Antoni would say, keep the line in the cage, keep the line in the cage. Who it's time to go? Control your emotions, control everything. Think about you know, we win the game, We're going to a ball game. Think about, Hey, this is a next step to where we want to be as a program. So those guys that are underclassmen are playing their butts off for these seniors.

These seniors are having you know coming out, they're showing up, and they're showing out in Spartan Stadium for the last time in their college careers. There is no more coming back, There is no more you know, this is your first last in Spartans game. This is your this is your last walk from the Kellogg Center to the to the stadium. This is your last you know, getting dressed in the locker room, your last pregame warm up,

all those things. Control those things and play your game. And I think if Michigan State plays their game and continue to you know, be on the path that they're on right now, they will find success and be successful on Saturday. Oh that was well well said. That was well said. I think that whatever we're doing these past two weeks in prepping for the opponent, we have to continuously do that. And I think we're stacking up.

We're not taking you know, looking ahead. It's day by day. We're doing the proper uh you know, homework on our opponents, and we're coming out playing with a reckless abandon You don't you see them running out the tunnel and it means business. We're we're cheering on each other, we're having a good time, we're also pushing through when stuff doesn't go our way. And I see our staff and our players making the adjustments compared to when we have

our our our lows and losing these games. We didn't make the proper adjustments. And we're making the adjustments on the fly. You see it a difference. And so for me, and I think for us as well, is that it's going to show up that first kickoff, and that first kickoff is going to say, you know, show us what this game is going to be like based off of like how do we handle the elements? It's gonna be just as windy as it was in Champagne. And so how is Peyton

gonna throw the ball? How is he going to share the wealth? And how are we going to attack the run and how are we going to defend? And if we get to the quarterback just like we did last week against Rutgers, and we get him to the ground, it's gonna be a successful win for us. Like the sounds of that, guys really like it. And not only do the Spartans need to come out and cheer on the football team, you also need to show the support for the team because there's gonna

be a lot of recruits on campus. This is a very fertile time of year for recruiting. Signing Day coming up in December for Michigan State football for all teams. Just had a big time commitment from a four star linebacker acker down in. Yeah, down there in the same time as a quietness. Absolutely, and you know you hit it on the head. Recruiting, it takes a lot. You know, Spartan nation, you play a big part

in the recruiting. If people come to the games and they see the stadiums full fans are cheering on their team, they're gonna say, hey, I want to be part of this.
