The following is a presentation of play Fly Sports properties in Michigan State Sports Properties. Well, hello and good evening. It is Tuesday, August first, two thousand and twenty three. Welcome to the only show about Spartan Dogs hosted by Spartan Dogs. This is Sparta Mso I'm your host, Jason Straighthorn. I played back and the proless of saving Eras as a center and team captain. I could not do this without my two dogs and the fight headed off

by the boss oldest wiley, hard hitting ball hawking safety. Both of these guys played back into John l and the Dantonio Eras and ju Choo Choo culcrit running back and running people over and scoring just you know, twenty one tutties for one season, single season touchdown record holder from Michigan State. And if this is your first time to the show, we welcome you. If this is not your first time, we thank you. Be sure to go to

the live check because that's where the party's at. And follow us on all of our social media followings. And don't forget the liking Subscribe buttons helps us out a whole lot. Doesn't cost you a thing. Guys, let's talk about. There's a lot going on. We got a jam packed show today. Pat, you know, be sure to tell us where you are watching us from. We need to know that. Put it in the chat. We need to know where you're calling from, where you're watching from, what's

happening. But guys, look happened the Spartan dog Kind this past weekend. It was a phenomenal event. Was there old us, you know, a whole lot. You know, Holdis was there in spirit. But look, hey, we this organization organizing these these events. He had he don't He had family. A happy wife. Happy family affords us the opportunity to do

these things more. So you go, you take care of that because I know in twenty nine days when that season, you might not see me on the show again, because you know how it is when it comes down and just right that season, the head scratching is gonna go. The fast walking is gonna happen. Like what you say, all right, cool, all right, yeah, that's what just say. You know, Oh, it's like you have to see you have to catch him. Whenever you wanted to ask a favor, I was like, and I see he's in a good

mood. That's when I man, what what kind of moved you in? Look at it? Well now and I just see I'll be like, no, he caught on. He caught on near the end of the season. I was like, oh, what kind of mood. No, But it was good to see a lot of those former dogs on campus, the future dogs on campus. It was a great event, wasn't it you It absolutely

was. It was a really good event. I don't think, you know, like we talk about it and I know where you know, former players, and you know, people might think there's some type of bias you know, behind that, but there's not an event like this in a country where the past, the present, and the future all come together. Um. It was an absolutely tremendous Eventum. Great time, good food, good drinks,

good company. Um, and just you know, having an opportunity even from the from the golf outing to you know that Shadows event where they unveiled the new uniforms there, Uh, just all around great event. That's true. You remember that ODIs that's a complete your circles coach D'Antonio. Yeah, so, um, I mean look that Dash Shadows event was outstanding, was phenomenal. You know, Darren Harris, Uh, you know, kind of

was the MC there. You had Alan Haller or athletic director there, and obviously head coach Mel Tucker put on the event with some of the current players that model the uniforms. Guys. You know, I know there's been a lot of talk about the uniforms. You can see them right here. You said, Cal Halliday in the traditional green and whites. JD. De Plaine in all greens with that old line slag you got tragged with that, that cobo that black and then man Strop the Stormtrooper looked that was a consensus.

Those two on the right were like what everybody loved the most. What do you guys think? Yes, I think everything looks better in black, so especially especially when you got ut the green the green elements in there, and then you have the you know, paying respects to homage to like shadows and

the university the university element tie in. Like I feel like there's not that very few schools that truly take in consideration the history of Michigan State in these these union uniforms and so celebrating a hundred in Spartan Stadium, I do have to give a shout off to others that don't get the shine. They should deserve that organize this and behind the scenes, and you know it's almost rotting

the names off. You know, you had the Rhonda Birley, Megan Holgan from the Marketing fan Engaging team, Nick Baker and his team for Spartan Vision, Andrew Kopaki, which you know, I know for a fact probably in a week or so, Too's gonna be up in there, Scarveragen from the Total I already gave him the warning, warning, the warning at that event. Three XS Readier. Who else? We got Cody Cox, we have

Sarah Skilling, like just all the people that showed up to support. You know, a lot of our partners had an opportunity to tie in and come in there, a lot of the former dogs, the recruits and their families. Like the pictures. I didn't have to be there. I can see the vibe of just the pictures like before everyone came in, like the rally towels, and you know, I'm wearing the little you know, arm risk that's what do you call this arm band? Risk band that has the thigh

shadows and like the Greek lettering. It's a whole whole event only can be happening when you have people behind the scenes doing this, so, you know, shout out to those teammates that got everything done so that everyone looks good in the football on the event standpoint, I just have to get that off off the chest. There no, absolutely, and I think all those people, you know, it's a great opportunity to give them a shout out because,

like you said, sometimes they do go unnoticed. But you know, definitely a lot of the hard work behind the scenes to make this happen. And uh, when we were driving to Indie for Big ten media day, we these you know, these uniforms were leaked and I looked at them. I was like, eh, I don't like them. I wish I wish I got them on a video. But you see it with the pads. Well, when you see it, you see the cuff sleeves, you see it, the whole get up, it's like, damn, these are nice.

Uh you know, so now you know damn. But you know, hopefully the old parable like Coach Prime would say, you look good, you feel good, you feel good, you play good, you play good. They pay good. So hopefully we're because we're looking good, we're feeling good. Now hopefully we play good. Yeah, yeah, a man, absolutely, And we had a chance to catch up with some of the our faithful listeners that were at the event as well, people like Kat was at the

event. It saw you know, Steve Smith, you know, always is a pleasure to see him, Sean Taylor, he was there Time Story or he was there, a lot of people. Harriet Oh, she was the

ring leader out there. Yeah. It was so good to catch up with a lot of the people who we see, you know, we chat with in the in the in the in the chat group, you know, that's where the party is at the live chat, but to spend time with them at that event and then over at the graduate, No, that was a treat for everybody because he can see shoot you in his element, I mean, shoot you hey. He was hey, you know, I'm just waiting something like hidden. We couldn't put this, we could not air shoot you

And I know I'm getting those videos from other people. Cow taking videos was there, you know, and so we had a good good time. It was a great event. It was a really good time. You know, my favorite you know, you know, obviously going to that Shadows event was good, but you know, hanging out with this is Sparta fam you know

at the Graduate Hotel. Shout out to Langston and the crew at the Graduate Hotel, you know, going there and uh you know seeing that, you know, being us with our family, with our this is Sparta fam. You know that was something else, a really cool experience. Um, you know, and it was a beautiful night. The rooftop bar was rocking. Um, you know, so it was uh Steve smith Steve Smiths was feeling good. He was feeling real good. You can't forget the crazy mans,

you lady. It was Mary Lou Moore. She was in the house. Yeah, yeah, we've seen you there. Yes, it was a great time and a lot of pictures on Coach Tuck. He was in the in the crowd, just hanging out taking pictures, talking to people. You know, you had all the like the current players there as well. And um, I can't even that blew me away. There's a coming sense from Landa said, it's two is worse than goose. You don't have you loose shirt right, sir, apparel coming soon. We we know we know how to

have fun. We know how to have fun. This is part of hard play, hard baby, and this is part of FAM. When we connect, it's like Captain Planner, when your powers combined, we have a good time. What you get this is all the time. This is actually a tame version of us if you have been around us so in those in those settings. But it was awesome, great to see everybody at that event. But you're talking about dogs. There was one that wasn't at the bit,

Trey Waynes. But look, we got notification that he dropped a five hundred

thousand dollars gift to MSU. Man. Listen, this is one of those where I feel like we should have celebrated this way more because from a former football standpoint, you know, straight you were in the room, we were talking and sitting down with Flozell and we were working on that north end zone gift, and you know, it's it's very huge for a former player who obviously gets to that level where Trey was at then to truly come back and

we talked about complete our circles. You know, he has a quote was like everything happened happened to me in my life because of Michigan State, right, I wouldn't be where I'm at and so forth. This is where you look at from the standpoint of a former player committing investing back into the program where you know, we have you know, we have dogs and we have former players to just ride the wave and too they go into the susset,

but they won't reach in the pockets to invest. And this is the investment that you know. It's truly, truly commendable for Trey and knowing that he did hang up the cleats and then he has you know, turned the leaf in chapter into what he's doing today. I can't wait to get him on the on the show and hopefully we can do on those marsh On lynches and go into the woods and uh chapter absolutely absolutely, so congratulations on that.

Absolutely. I mean where's he's in Montana building a ranch, a massive ranch out there, Montena. Is he back at home like in Wisconsin, Montena my antenna, Yeah, he's out there. Uh talked to Darien about him and one of our old Baysmore is that his name? Baysmore is another big director out there. Yeah, yeah, he's in He's in Montana as well. So look, you know two brothers in Montana. I said, y'all gotta know each other, you gotta hang out. It's a lot of laying

in between them. But look, straight before I cut your yea before cal is trying to give me some brief from cow. I talked to your wife at though you never this time you try to use to not go help do bad time and put the kids to bad. Get your hats up there and put the kids to bad. Cow. That's from that's straight from your wife. Oh damn, okay, shots fired again. Be careful out here. You does not let things slide, y'all. He don't let you. If you come for me, you better kill me. Oh I got you too.

He's like, all right, I got you, Yeah, all right. Back to some highlight reels here because we got to talk about these hops. Broke Cohen car new Fish State basketball player just came to look at this. Let's show this video looks just just just gently touch the man. He can go hire And from I heard and uh and seeing him in person, you know he's he's slim and trim, but he got he got some muscle

on him, and he's already as a freshman. Um. I think I met him when they got dropped off and you know, arrival on campus and I'm talking to the coach is a you know, you got the little top deck where he got a like it's like Lloyd Carr bo Chef Blecker, a little outside their little thing, you know, they step out here to see practice. And so he kind of came in and uh, he was talking. He did coach, Coach. I was like, yeah, man, like, this guy looks thinks he could play play football. He's like,

yeah, coach, you know I could play some my receiver now. And I was he said it was so much confidence, I mean, jumping like that. Man like, this dude is a pure athlete. It's gonna be a highlight reel above the rim. And I'm also I'm also thinking, is he gonna be a better dunker than Mouth Bridges and Shannon Brown was a beastie dunker like Jason Richardson. So like half some solid dunkers in our time, you're throwing out some name this man. This man can do it in through

the legs. I mean, just just natural. He every highlight I saw in high school. I told you about this. It's dun dun, dune. I ain't see a jumper. And so we're gonna look at that and see how he truly brings in that excitement with the freshman squad we got coming here m hm. Incredible exciting times. Man, you know he got the football season coming up and then basketball. Who man, it's gonna be something that Breslin Center when you see electrifying athletic dunks like that. Man, I

mean, we're excited for Cohen Card what he can do. Moving on the football, he's still you know, hey, Look but David Stone report is how he announces when his commitment will be. Look it looks like August twenty six the commitment date for David Stone and IMG defense five star defensive liment. Listen our logos not even on the bottom. Look how look at the organ as Spartans in that corner he came and see us put it back up, Tony. See Look look it kind of faded into the back like we fade

into Spartan helmet. I want to believe that I could put all my eggs in the basket with with David Stone. I would love for him to come to Michigan State. It would turn us all the way up, But I just don't have a confidence based off of all the stuff back and forth. Um. I hope chooses to come on this side. But all I can do is pray. That's all. I can do. That's that's it, And amen said amen to that. Look, look you ain't I'll talk about him when he's here, right, I like that, you go, seine?

Would Freddy say about those who ain't with us? Right? Hey, have a sip to that road, Jack, But it's still play. We got about twenty five days until that announcement comes. We'll see what happens. But then we got to recruiting. Last night at midnight was the beginning of the full contact period for the twenty twenty five class. Guys, Like it just doesn't stop. You know, I can't help but think about the coaches, like how are they doing this? You got to recruit guys and the

twenty four class hard as hell. Now you got the twenty five. And then oh, by the way, they have camp opening up tomorrow. So it's it's it's those are the twenty hour days that everybody talks about. Because I'm gonna tell you, man, from our personal experience, my son Kaden down at IMG and I was on the phone with him last night and sure, I mean they just started inundating the phone calls, dms and Twitter mail showed up at the house today like handwritten notes like you wouldn't believe. And

that's that's for the twenty twenty five class guys. Yeah, that's the thing. And then you know you said it started at midnight. It's not like you know, you're you're not sending it out emails that you can time when you send it out. These coaches have to be up to do this stuff there. So it's just the recruiting games totally changed a lot. There's so

much that goes into it. And like you said, straight they have camp starting tomorrow, you know, so they have to worry about this, you know, figure out this when we're okay, we have day one installed. We got to get the mindset right for a camp. Start on the right note. But oh yeah, we have to worry about twenty twenty five as

well. So it goes a lot into coaching. So and also too for these kids that are getting recruited it sometimes it can be overwhelming the fact that all these coaches are coming at them and these are fifteen sixteen year old kids. You know, they're taking all this stuff, so it's overwhelming on both sides, and you know they have to find a nice balance for it.

Hey, those are great points because I feel like if you're smart enough, if you don't want to be bothered, it's almost like they're gonna force you to commit to one and it still gonna stop. Usually it was like you commit, there was some respect factor of coaches, like you know what, that's your guy. We're gonna respect that. Right. Like, there's no there's none of that anymore, right, So you gotta constantly once they commit, you still got to build a full security wall around them to make sure

that they're not flipping or going this way that way. But to your point, like I don't mean kids can't really enjoy high school man, because like they're getting blown up left right, where like it's almost forcing you to say, you know what, I'm going to control the narrative on my own future. I'm gonna make my decision this date, stick with it. Uh. I will feel these calls or text whatever they are in the case may be

when I get to them. But like they need to focus on still producing because I feel like if you don't produce, then all that heat and all that that that uh attention is gonna come off of you. So I don't know, this is a different ball game. Like anstitute, I feel like well, we'll struggle if we were playing coming out of high school in the

standpoint right right? Yeah, yeah, oh yeah, because if if it's a catch twenty two, because if you don't continue to call the kids and show them the love, they'll flip because you know, somebody else is. It's it's incredible. You see a lot of commitments like who is it? Auburn just flipped to Georgia and Alabama commit. So the guys that we have in the you know right now committed to Michigan State, you have to continue to pay attention to them or you know, you run the risk of them

being poached by somebody else. It's a crazy time that we live in right now. Guys, it is, And I understand what you're saying. You gotta make the main keep the main thing, the main thing. If you stop training and you stop focusing on the task at head, which is being the best person you can be, best student athletes you can be and be where you're feed are at all, hell can break loose. So look,

always keep the main thing happy. Got to right? I mean, can we talk a real quick about like recruiting integrity, Like you know, there's different tactics of you know, I'm going to call you to I'm gonna call Stray and I'm going to you're committed to Michigan State. I'm gonna call you from another school. I'm a bash Michigan State to get you to think about

like, is there is there some shadow of doubt right? Like and I feel like that integrity of like, don't bash another person's program, talk about how your program can do things for you. But there's all of that chatter, and hey, you can't win, you can't go to the next level going to Michigan State. Look, you will be spotted anywhere from any scout wherever you go. But from the standpoint there's a lack of that integrity. From a recruiting standpoint of them, I'm not going to push this school down

just to get a recruit. But then it does that say about your program from an integrity standpoint. So I just had to talk about percent right, one hundred percent right. It's the same narrative if you have to if you have to talk shit on another man, who lift yourself up? That means

you ain't shit yourself. You know, that's exactly so um you know, And but there are schools that do that you know, a kid that's a sixteen, seventeen, eighteen year old kid that's made that choice, sat with his family, weighed out the pro and the cons, and then to have a grown man coming and saying, oh, you're not going to be successful there, You're only going to have success here. What does that say about

Drew School? Are you saying that you're not Your athletic ability is going to be different if you go to this school, then if it is here, that's what it's saying there. So that's the tough, tough part about recruiting, and at the end of the day, we have to realize that these are kids, easily influenced, kids who sit with their families, you know, trying to make the best decisions, and a coach that's powerful comes and talks to you. I'll say, I'm going to change your life and this,

that and other. No, your talents, your athletic abilities that got you there, and your family is going to be the one that takes you to wherever you want to go. Are Those are excellent points And you know that was a big point of emphasis before, guys, when you had negative recruiting and you know, some of that stuff came back to bite certain coaches who are negatively recruiting a school against the school who they then wanted to interview

for a job for so that you heard a lot of stories about that. But in today's world, you know, what you know, you used to be, relationships used to be, you know, talk about your school. But what they do now they come in with that bag bag again. It

has changed the landscape. I've talked to so many coaches that are friends that you know, not just you know that are in the recruit of my kids, but just that relationships don't matter as much anymore because you know, if somebody offers X, and you know the team that he's committed to is offering, why they're going, they're going for them. Some of these numbers are difficult to turn down, to say the leaves. So that's that's where we

are right now. That's why there's a big focus on trying to get transparency with NIL because the collectives are I mean some of them have you know,

they have war chest twenty five million dollars. Some of these guys have you know, and some schools like you know or down in the three to four to five million dollars range, so look, with a roster of eighty five scholarship players, man, I mean, you know, with no real rules right now, we are literally in the wild ball West as far as that's concerned right now, and we don't know there's legislation on the table that they're talking about, but we have a ways to go before that becomes law.

And guys, we'll see what happens one thing real quick. I know we got to move on to the next topic. But stray like Otis and I are not in this position right now, you and your family in this position where you have, you know, coaches coming at you and doing the recruiting and all these different things, Like what would you say, you know from

you know, someone that's played the game. You know, you're in the game on the day to day and now you're on the recruiting side of things and you've seen all the tactics and everything like that, what would you say to, um, you know, another family you know that's keeping how much money? How much money's gonna make you not played twice? I mean we'll look at what would I say to another fan will how much money? Every

Look, let's be real, everybody has a number. I don't get what who you are in this one that you can say it and all that. Oh, there's no amount of money, but there there there is, you know, but the numbers that I hear thrown around, like, look you have everybody's situation. Everybody's financial picture is different, you know, being a former player myself, we we value other things. We do a value education,

we do value development, mental conditioning. Um, we value like the body, Like how kind of kind of rest and recovery do you have? What kind of nutrition programs do you have? All those things? Depth chart that matters. You know, you're just not gonna go chase money and then next thing you know, you're you're number five on the depth chart. You know as a as a quarterback, right, guys aren't gonna do that. So you know they want to be able to be in position to actually contribute

to a team and know that they're developed. Um, is there an opportunity for you to really like has has the position code? Put guys into the NFL? If that's what your dream is. If you want to be a chemist, can I make it to fighter being a chemist? At this school? Do you have? Can you show me that path? So everybody has their own formulas for success. So I would just you know, be mindful of that when I talk to dads, and I do do a lot of

that. I do speak to a lot of dads and try to help them through the process as much you can, because you know, yeah, I'm always gonna, you know, try to lean green. But you gonna have to also, you know, the main thing the maintain the real green, like green and white and green green Well Kirk Well, Kirk Frankman song, Kurt Freakman song at Silver and Gold. I'd rather have Jesus. That's unlimited,

brother, But money, right, that's unlimited. So look, guys, look, we gotta keep it moving, man, we gotta get to our special I guess the no Fly Zone dipped up. The architect of the No Fly Zone joins us next after this message from our friends over at IHO five dollars, all you can eat pancakes are back to celebrate I hup sixty fifth anniversary, So come on in, even if it's your birthday too.

I'll build for a limited time only at hupstart Rain dropping them pancakes and without further ado Man drafted twenty fourteen, first round by the Cincinnati Bengals, Michigan State, Great Cornerback and No Fly Zone founding member Darquez the Nard joins. This is part of MSU Welcome to the show. Quick, yes, sir, what's up? Good? Thank y'all. The number one DV in the program history. Okay, all right, right, you know, look at look at look at the artwork in the back there. Look that background.

Everybody take notes and so if you're on the show, you need to look at follow up quest. All right, go ahead, man, good lighting, good background, good sound, everything. How you doing that? I don't bless, can't go playing at all. I'm doing good, doing good. Yeah, it was good to see you this weekend. Yeah, go ahead, go ahead, go oh yeah, look, I hate I have to miss it, you know, but I know you've been around often.

I saw you in springball. You know, you came back and he was giving some love back to the young, the young Jets, the young dB ease and um, I remember you told me? Who did you tell me that was was was nice out there that we could expect in that BB secondary who so really, you know, I spent the whole spleen there. So some guy who I really liked, Tatum dealing Tatum Man he chopping out to

out the tape just especially we haven't key on the NFL receiver. In my eyes, he'll play on Sundays. Uh keep uh him to go out there in battle Kian like he did. Uh. You know he's still a young dog. So uh really really a lot of upside that he got. Man, you got so really all the dbs I really like, uh like Lowry got a really good feat like can't really can't really teach like certain things that he got, like just natural ability you got Caleb. Uh you know that

Georgia Wood he did. Uh he gotta burst. He gotta burst, and he finished through his tackles and stuff as well. So uh, man, it's it's it's a it's a man's Uh. You got some good ones. And I think let's always talking to a lot of the guys at the Smart Dog Like I mean obviously we kind of we you know, we had a

great year. A lot of things feeling feeling played uh that year, but people don't understand, like what was together for a long time, Like you God, you look at that that secondary me Curtis Isaiah who was out in the same recruiting class, so like was who was there for a minute, like we you know what I'm saying, we experienced a lot, we grew up, we got to grow up a lot earlier as well, and that you know, that helped us. So like with these guys, like they

were talented it and then we was for sure. I would say, Uh, they just gotta you know, believe in themselves and put the work in. So back to Dylan there, you know you were there and you know he's played some safety from corner, and what do you think his best spot is? I mean, I'm not I can't really, I can't really tell you that because I'm not necessarily in the coaching you know, uh philosophy or in their room, so I don't really know how they're being coaching, how

they're being told, So I don't necessarily see his best capabilities. All I seem at and I just know mentally, mentally, physically and he can play it like at a at a high level. So I can't really say if he is he is he can he play safety? I'm I'm pretty sure you can. If you can play corner, you you know it's uh, you can play safety usually if you can tackle and you're smart. Uh, But you know, those are two different positions as well, a lot of corners

can't play safety, So you're saying corners some more athletic than safeties. I mean, here you go, said, yeah, I got that sideline as your best friend. Yeah, said yeah, it depends on who you. You know, some guys that walking this earth they just and he's like, and you that guy, right, you that guy you're talking to. Hey, let's talk. Let's let's go back. Let's go back, let's go

back. Dry Brands, Georgia story. The story. The story was told that you was playing against Keith mufphrey as they was looking at Keith and you was out there locking Keith now, and it was like, who's this cat? Right? Like talking about that time, like the initiation of Michian State introduction while you was in there in Georgia, Dry Branch, Georgia. Oh yeah, so shout out that's the crib at home. I always fail shout out to Yet County. You know. Uh So what happened was, at

the time, I didn't have any scholarships. So Keith was already committed to Michigan State. So they were like they, you know, he was already allowed to go and we was getting ready to go into the playoffs and Keith was you know, it was Keith senior night. Actually they came to you know to support them and who can't who came, I don't really remember. It was about four. It was about four people. I want to I want to say coach Warner. Uh, I'm not sure. I'm not sure

the other two coaches was maybe it was Enos. It was like three or four coaches that it came. It was a bunch of coaches that came because like in the pre game, ain't in the pre game like it's funny like now, um, because so what people don't know is Keith usually followed me like I was the receiver. I didn't play dB, so just for like you know, Keith was the guy. It was like the challenge uh my

coach had for me, like uh that my senior year. So I end up had to to follow Keith that game, which you know, I guess that opened up. But you know some odds as well, so like uh, by us following each other the whole game, it wasn't you know what was gonna have to see each other in battle. But like before the game, like the pre game, there is out there like on pre game, you know, and I'm you know, kind of like barking. I'm doing a lot of barking. Now, I'm like, y'all go y'all. You

know, y'all came to see a show. I'm gonna get y'all win. And you know, end up having a pretty good game. Uh uh I did. On the way home, my coach shout out to Coach Copeland. Uh. Were running back on the way home, and he, you know, he on the phone. He turned around, look at the back of the boy. He's like, yeah, man, just got the phone. Michigan State. They say, they go highlight you. I'm like, bro, get out of here. Don't believe him. And then you know,

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, come in. I go in, you know, to the building and Coach Warner and Coach d sitting in the office. So that's how out. And then at the time, I don't have you know, I have zero scholarships. I don't I don't even football. And then you know, I'm not going to play football, Like I'm not about to go to Julian College. Uh. You know, I'm kind of looking at other options at the moment. So uh, yeah, man, God is a great man. I'm just like, what what are you

thinking? I actually couldn't hair I wanted to say. I mean, I thought it was easy. You know. Yeah, you get to do your job. You pay you for your service. You don't really got to talk too much. Man. You know, dude, you got in and out the chair when you did you cut hair? In high school? Did you cut your teammate chair? Did you? Yeah? We don't want to talk

about that. What he was out there giving three point line when people to start, you know started, you know, yeah, you know I had a practice on that a little bit, but football I ended up being a little better for me. Said that No, no hairline zone so so so so quit so you had you were a receiver really before you ended up playing against Keith and you followed him the whole game. He played defensive back. You know, what was it that did you that you felt? When wasn't

you knew that I'm gonna be a better defensive back than a receiver? What was it? The funny thing is probably the first my first my first game my senior season, I got hit. Who probably heard is that I ever got here? Uh? When I realized I was like, yeah, if I'm gonna go play ball, I gotta go to other side. Like it's better to deliver than yes, Lord, it ain't gonna work out, Kay, Shaun Simmons. I never forget buddy named you had to kill me.

Yeah, that is rough. It was. But he changed the course of history for you and put you on the other side of the ball where you you know, he made a little money, man, I mean everything having for a reason that pain brought you to joy exactly. Gonna look at some highlights here you playing while we were talking. Hey, I looked like ninety six. Hey man, look I think I was. I was here and I came to you, Why you ain't crib this? And after all that,

you didn't crib this? Yeah he did. They called They called a flag right then. They Yeah we lost that game too, did we? We lost? It was there was twenty toyo season. Uh we lost. It was seven and six day year. He lost with five games total, like toyl points or something, right, right, Uh yeah, they kind of like you know, rolled into like that Rose Boy year. It was

a good team. We just you know how it is so mean. I remember almost got banned from the radio pair because we were Me and George were real hot with that call, because that that was a total bullshit call to Adam someone just tell you got with you. They their game, man the game and they stelf even like, well, I end up getting a plass interference like right before probably like two players, it's probably two or three plays before to throw in the corner end zone too in the slot. It was

on Mitchell, uh to lose it. But I end up getting a PI like a couple of plays before. It was a you know, it's crazy. It's crazy because there happened my junior year. They're going to my senior year. The stuff that happened at uh, you know, not to day it was it I was it was easy. It kind of easier to eat and be able to prepare moving forward, just because you know, being in that situation prior. So like that twenty twelve season, they kind of taught

us a lot of lessons. Uh. I will say, even though you know a lot of games came down to the wire and flag here flat there. You know, couple plays here and there could have changed. You know, that's easy. Could have easily been twelve and two, easy to be

thirteen. You know, want like you know, so it's uh inches, that's that coach steal right, yeah, that Notre Dame, that Notre Dame game, go ahead, yeah, no, yeah, so about that Norre Dame game there and uh even uh coach D'Antonio I think we I you know, talking to him, and he said, after that Norre Dame game, he called the Big ten and said, hey, these refs just cost a team a bit in the national title, you know because you know of those

passing difference. How frustrating was that Notre Dame game? Uh, super first grade steal first game to the day. Just because sorry, sorry declares, we're bringing up those probably past moment. People want to people want to hear you want to get rid of but I feel you like, I feel that's the way right there for just because for me anyway, don't I don't want to if anybody kind of remember that season like it was kind of national championship

for me. Uh, that's all all I used to talk about it, you know, just because it was it was at whole places and there would always like it set up for us. We talked about we talked about the Rose Bowl, the National Championship. Just so happened to be in the Rose Bowl, So like there was like all my focus, so like going to know the Dame who just was what the year before, they a couple of years before the year before they were just in the national championship, like they

playing a team that been there before. Uh, and you know, just to have it not have anything to do with the game. Uh, just you know, things out of control. Who were being coached to you know, you can't really be you know what I mean, coach any better uh in those situations to play the ball or to play the uh you know,

the receivers as a defender. So to be to uh yeah, man, that's thirteen to win is crazy because to me, I feel like we were the one and that easily uh because we was able to match up and be able to compete so with anybody of that nature. So yeah, it's uh that was tough. But okay, so moving forward and uh orchestrating um what what people call um the no fly zone? All right, you know that's a you know, just guys that are you know, playing in that secondary

and playing damn good football. Where was where did the origin of the no fly zone come from? Uh? So this all came like staying from the twenty twelve season. Uh So at the time, I mean like marketing classes. Uh so, me and Curtis actually roommates. Uh so mea, Me, Curtis and Keith was our roommates. And then but Isaiah my line like all of us like stayed down the street from each other. So um a little bit. I don't watch TV, you know, I watch cartoons.

Uh And I just don't happen to sit down. This is kind of at the time this ended up my junior year kind of like decided if I'm gonna leave or I'm gonna go, I mean leave, I'm gonna stay for my senior season. Uh and we kind of like you know, talking through that process, uh and watching the College Football Awards. Uh Jonathan Banks win the award. And at the time, I'm kind of like I watched who I watch. I don't really know nobody else other than people who I play.

Uh So I'm like, who is Jonathan Banks? I ain't never heard of Jonathan Banks? Like, go look at this span. I'm like, oh, I could do that, Like he just wanted I can, Like I could do that. So I end up standing my senior year and I was like, all right, I got to find a way to you know, for us to get notoraded. We've been a top you know five defense every year I've been here, and we still people still like don't give us our respect. H So end up you know, coming up with the no fly

zone. Uh still a little bit about that as well. Uh So made up the no FLI zone. End up talking that like Curtis and everybody about it, uh and end up going to the Big ten like interview thing and this when you know, uh, technically I announced like all right, we for now we're gonna be known as the no fly zone. Blah blah blah. You know kind of we popped out pop you know, we taught out, We taught our ish and they were kind of you know later and they

laid like the foundation really from there. You know, once you why don't you say certain things? You got to be able to back up everything you say. So like for for then, I knew like the capabilities that everybody had in the locker room. So it was up to us to you know, hold each other accountable. Uh Like we had a great group of seniors and you know the younger guys will they was you know, they was motible, they listened. You know, they trust us just because we you know,

been in that fire. And so that's how the no fly zone end up coming, end up making like some shirts, like end up doing a whole bunch of thing during training campus stuff, and they kind of laid on, you know, into the season and yeah, it went crazy. How to Coach D and them embraced the no fly zone. Uh, I see, you know, was Coach D my guy? Like that's like, that's that's my that's my dog. So like I feel like we got a different

Coach D than you know what I'm saying, y'all. Yeah, I definitely did so Like I used to have to tell like Coach D like I gotta like, you know, look good. I gotta you know, that made me feel good, coach, I'm gonna be able to play. And you know, it kind of been like that since my first year, so he'll

kind of you know, give me a little more leeway and talk. And then going into my senior ye know, we really just like bunded, uh you know, me and Coach D. And it kind of ended up you know and end up being like a player led team and you know, like coach d big on that the seniors having you know, their best years and that's what we did, and everybody was, you know, all in it

was. It was crazy. So coach d gotta you know, hein't really ain't had no pressure for he had like you know, we had some dogs and all the dog control where they supposed to control, and you know, forgot what do you used to say, like keeping in the cage like age, like keep line in the cage until you know in the arena and we

we you know, it was a happy balance. It was a happy balance so that I don't know he figured it out quit So you tell him you saw Jonathan Banks when the Jim Thorpe you said, I can do that. And then you went to dicting media days and said, hey, no flies on what kind of work went into that, like the behind the scenes work with the rest of the defensive secondary to get to that level. H man. We it was a long dage, but it was so The cool thing

about it was like it was it was already built into it. So like especially in the morning, like we'll on Wednesdays or Sundays, we'll have to wake up super early to go just meet and watch firm and then we'll do certain things like together, like all of us would just be together at the house playing monopoly anyway. So it was like, okay, let's take fifteen twenty minutes just to knock out some firm. Hey, what stuff that you

don't understanding these coverages? All right, we're gonna play it this way. If we see it this way, we're gonna play it this way. And then a lot of stuff. You know, if everybody looking at the same lenses and everybody like communicating at the same level and understanding. Man, that's that's essentially where we like every it was a bun and when you when you was it, where are you supposed to be? We let each other to

know. So that was from workouts to like your daily living to like you know, you know, making sure everybody was eating, like just the little stuff that the like just we just spent time with each other. We watched family together, we worked out, We pushed each other every day when we got in the weight room or I don't feel anytime it was any like competitive, Like it was like had those Monopoly games didn't finish because how competitive it

got, and they would you know, they were made us. They were made us good. Excuse me, they were made us great. Say that, listener. I mean as a dB like senior year top ten Jim Thorpe, And I was like, to your point, Dirk was I was. I was trying to chase that thing with every fiber of my being dog because that's what that's what you want, right, you want to leave a legacy. And and uh, you know you did it with a fashion of grit

and just grow and just grinded it out. Man. I think the one thing is when we knew what you got, stepped off the bus like it no matter who you're facing it, no matter who they had on their side. We knew that we had our dogs, and we was coming after the quarterback and we was getting after the receivers. I feel like that defense also took that press control band a man like by storm, where then, like you guys kind of set that mode of now, coach, be like,

this is the DBS. We wan't moving forward right like people that are gonna punch you in the mouth, stick with you pound for pound, speed up and down the field. Seeing our current last season, you know, and seeing the kind of the woes and struggles the defense a secondary had, you know, what was your mindset as you watch from Afar, because I know

you watched just probably us and how we were working. And you know, you can see coverages, you can see Brounch breaking before they see them, and it's played that you feel like you can make right now in your mind. But like, tell us about like what you saw last season and then also what you expect to see the uh So, what I saw last season was just the young inexperience. They playing a lot of times, they playing

by theirselves. Uh And what I mean by that is they act like they on the ones on the field, like even though it is one one coverages or even though certain coverages, you you do have some kind of whether that's body presidents or you know, you have a middlefield safety hips over top as well. So like just different things like that. Not that's you know,

kind of comes with experience, kind of comes with knowing the defense. Uh, knowing like you know, basically what's your roles and responsibilities in this defense. What we saw, what the plays that we're supposed to make and with the plays like the defense gives up. Uh So, like that's what I've seen from Afar. Uh. Just you know a lot of but you know

they're young. Kind of happens when you know young injuries like having X. You know X was a huge uh part of that defense last year and you know him being hurt majority the year that you know that that's that's that's tough. Uh having somebody with that experience and that communication. Uh. And so for me from Afar, that's what I have seen so in this year. Uh, just them settling down and trusting each other. I think that's the what I'm looking for. That's the next step that they got to make.

Understanding like you got the team, Uh, just do your job, do your one eleven. You're doing. Your one eleven is more than enough. Uh. So like just understanding that and just you know, playing don't don't play superhero ball. M man. That's good. Yeah, that's the coach deisms right there, wisdom man to the goal. You gotta you gotta you know. So that's true. That's true. So looking at today's game,

right, you know, you see how it's changed so much. Right you see you hear about n I M. You hear about the transfer portal, and there's a big emphasis on stars and all these things. So you are a guy coming out of Georgia Versus didn't have a lot offers before Michi Sate saw you ding up one of their guys. Uh, you were I think two stars. What they said you were two star coming out of high school? I was a zero star? Was zero? Yeah, it was zero

star. They gave me two stars at that side. Oh so all day, right, so zero start the first round? You know you you absolutely that that embodies like the President, enduring and overcoming obstacles. Uh, what do you what is a message right now? Would you would say to a young guy who's sitting there in America somewhere that's a zero star that doesn't have offers? So what does it take mentally to be able to make it through? And what I tell a kid who's sitting what I tell a kid who's

sitting in the same situation, I will just stay down. I think that's the best on where everybody no offers. Just do everything which you can control. U. That's your airport, that's your attitude, that's your energy, and just you know, continue to put forward and whatever your dreams is and understand you good enough to play this game. They will find you like they will find you no matter where you know, where you go a bit school, small school, HBCU, D one and D two, n aia juco.

Everybody you know had a step of stone. But if you're good enough to to play at a level, especially now, because it's like you said, it's it's two sides to the NIA in a transfer portal, could get some guys opportunities. Uh And obviously you know I was a Boroke college student, so the money is good for them too. But you know, stay down, wory hard, and you know understand cream always rises. Uh yeah,

just control what you control absolutely. Um yeah. So with that quse, you know, you talk about being a guy that was gonna be cutting hair. You said zero star. You know, your thought you're gonna be cutting hair. And then you get as opportunity. You know, you go to Michigan State, you ball out, you know, and then you're going you're going to the league. You're the twenty fourth overall pick. You know, what was that? What was that moment like not only for you but

your family? What was that moment? Like? Uh man, life changing? Uh. I still just remember the day I got drafted for real, just even like that process. Uh, just like those those two days like the day before and the day Uh that was a you know, I felt like a week. Uh and just the process just seeing everybody who you know I had, you know, some kind of run into uh you know, and I'm now I come from a big family, huge family. My grandparents.

Uh like my grandmother got like fifteen business sisters. My granddad got five siblings and silf you know, my dad I had this his uh family as well. So like and just the whole community helped me be the person I am the day. Uh and for me to be able to you know, go to have hours. Uh not only accomplished the things that I did on the football field, I was able to graduate. I was the first in

my family to graduate. Uh awesome. Uh so my b being the first to graduate, I also motivated my younger sisters to go to you know schools, and my younger cousins to go to school. So just the things uh that this, you know, the game of football with Michigan State, uh, you know, providing me just a small town kid, just having an opportunity uh to you know, leave my dreams, massimize my dreams. Uh.

Still you know, waking up and doing that today. Uh, it's a blessing in itself and then changed my life and my family life, uh forever. So I'm grateful. Look at that Braxton Milli in the sessional put it right there on you on que baby. Um, you know, let's let's talk everybody. Don't understand the quality of man that we were able to

to be led by and coach Coach D'Antonio. Right, like we got Coach d from the fresh one where he had to be he had to flip and turn the tide and we got Yeah, he had to be strict and like

y'all been bandits and y'all got to get in line in order. Like so we had that, but we also start to see the side of like him him as a husband, as a father, and you know, just talk about the time with him and still to this day, like we could pick up right where we left off when we see him, or we can make a car or text and he's still accessible, and just talk about that that quality relationship knowing you where where you ways away from Georgia coming to East Lanton

right, completely totally different, um standpoint, but just talk about that quality relationship with Coach d Man. Coach d Man's man. It's my pops for real, uh genuine dude. Yeah, who you know, it's funny just before I live to go to Michigan State. Like, first of all, my grandma, right, she really didn't want me to play football. I got drafted and she still like, oh I still don't want you to play

signbouts, right, he even't care about the money. A little type person she was, but she I mean, coach d came in and got her comfortable and you know, and that meant a lot for me. That made me comfortable, uh for in itself, that just shows what kind of you know individual this person was. And just like you know, things that he

did to show, you know, not as a football player. Then you know, I don't really want to say he didn't care for us so about football players, because obviously that's his job, that what he's supposed to do, but just the things he did as for us as men, uh and the things that like bro like he you know, he made us the ed could classes bro like like eat you know what I'm saying, Like because he

didn't like us and how it was eating before a game. You know, you know, just the just the things you do and you don't even think about it at the moment, like in that time period. But like me being adult now me you know what I'm saying, understanding like man, wow, like I understand why the things that he did. Uh. And you know to this day, like he still calling check up from me. You just golf. Uh he didn't kind of like food me at like he wasn't

a good golf player. But you feel, Yeah, I knew. I knew when I saw him coming with that comfort one arm sleeve on that look out. He's sneaky, but it's those the bread fires man. Yeah, he got it before bread fire stole all the people of money. Here we go again. Coach D level Man, super grateful form, taught me a lot, taught me how to how I want to you know, be for my kids and you know, for my family and how you know, operating business today. Uh Man gave me a lot of a lot of twos in

my in my two two chests. Absolutely, I think we all can say that about uh. You know, COACHD. You know, he is that guy that you know, helped mold us to be who who we are. And you know, if we had you know, if he was still coaching we had kids, we definitely want, you know, our kids to play for someone like coach d But little key though Coach he be like if he'd be beating me, like he's sneaky good at pool, but he and he'd be talking shit too. Hey, I think I'm the only one. I

didn't. I didn't beat Coach dal covid times I saw I had. I had to wait til I got to be like a senior or the playing because I you know, I ain't really not a pool until I got that, you know, going out sneaking and sneaking uh the players and practice right right, had a couple of years to beat them though, But yeah, he used to woo boys. He was like, you know, good at golf for real, because I don't know, I'm uh play at all. And

he's smooth with stays in the fairway, playing Kurt Golf easily. Huh yeah, two and three? So quiz you know, so you you've got a chance. I mean, you had your career in the NFL. You just recently retired from the NFL. Uh No, no, I can still playing right, and I know you look like it. Right, let's talk about that at the count I know, I mean, so so we're still the doors open. I mean, I'm just I'm looking for a job. So you're looking for you know I have, I have a lot of great skills.

Uh tell them, tell them what you're looking for or what kind of job I'm looking for. If it's not football, then what would you like plane? What would you like to do? Okay if in the perfect world war, I'd like to do Uh. You know, obviously I have a lifestyle brand, daily deposits and then running my foundation full time or Denard difference. Uh So right now I'm pushing dope like I was telling ju Uh the other day, I'm pushing dope at the moment. Uh. That Isnard performing

rich So it's again Denard Opportunity Performance Enrichment Center. So it's a building what I got in my hometown, you know, doing some new a new version of the y MCA, because you know, I ain't had that when I grew up, So I think it's very needed, especially at this time and age. But in the building, it has a music as a music studio in one room or another room, and has a photography podcasting room another room. You know, Google donated fifty computers so that room serve as a library.

So kids who don't have Internet assets or just want to get away, come check out the computer and you know, have that assets. And then we have a game room. We have like six TVs that's gonna do screaming and twitching, you know. Other I think it's like six TVs gonna be arcades. Then we're gonna do like monthly. H We're gonna do monthly like Madden and two K tournaments. Uh. And then I have a kitchen are as where I have a few shifts that's gonna work out of there also gonna

you know, I have uh barber sharing there as well. Uh. And then I have one room. It's actually the entrepreneur room, so uh, you'll be selling clothes and shoes. But if you're an entrepreneur, you're able to host your things up like you have a storefront in my building. Uh. Basically for will be your back office and run everything for you. Uh. And you'll get a text excuse me, attached credit for it because it is a five or one C three. Uh So yeah, so that's you

know, that's what I'm doing at the moment. But I'm still stand in shape. I'm still staying out the part to any and every opportunity possible. Uh but yeah, so again at the moment, I'm pushing dope. Uh it's sad and making Georgia twenty four sixty five. Hell, Chris, We're gonna do a grand open August twenty six. So it's like you be like backpack giveaways still for the kids in the community, have like piunce houses that type of stuff going on August twenty six. So That's what I'm doing at

the moment. But I'm ready to play though if it, if it gotta it gotta make sense, right. So with that, with your foundation there and everything, if I because we got a lot of you know, listeners that you know, always love helping out especial love helping our former spartans. If they want to help out or in any way, you know, how can they do that? Okay? Uh So the foundation website is up. Excuse me, the Denard Difference dot org. It's Doug du Denard Difference dot

org. If you got like social media, Uh, my Instagram is dark quiz. I got the links on the on the bottom of it. I am doing. I'm getting ready to do a couple of different things because we're gonna get ready to do a sneaker ball come October to be able to uh

do some fund raising. Excuse me to do some fund raising so I can continue to have my weekend, uh, you know, because it's you know, kind of getting to the point where I am going to retire soon and I want to continue to bring different athletes and entertainers in my own town to you know, continue to show the kids. Like it's always ways we can get paid off our talents, but it's more ways, you know, to be able to do it as well. You don't have to be the person

that's on the screen. You can also be the person that couldn't that person but chick uh and usually that's a little bigger, right. So that's the type information I'm trying to give, you know, to these kids and just open up their minds. So I got a few things that's going on my foundation stuff. You can't basically stay up the day with things where I got going on at dark Quiz Instagram and then the Denar Difference dot org on websites

there it is right there. Look at that see crack producers got it right there for everybody. Then different Center dot org there's one right there that pulls up online. Uh yeah, do youth really need this? I mean this is great, beautiful sense of why mcas aren't as prevalent as they once were. The CEE doing something like that for the youth, it's incredible. That's

that's beautiful, man, I mean that's awesome. Yeah, I mean pushing dope, pushing dope one more time just for the people like just coming in. Yeah, pushing dope. What what thenar Opportunity Performance Enrichment Center. Okay, it's the dope center. Some pushing pushing hope. You know what I'm saying. You're giving people hope that they and be able to chase their dreams to the maxims. Like you feel me. I'm a living proof you stand

on making daily deposits. Uh you know what I mean. The blessing gonna come. Man. Look, I'm proud to see you one the evolution of dark quest coming from freshman year to then now and just this is the this is the proof of and the results of sowing seeds and reaping the harvest. Man. So I'm me from one day seeing you as a littlegit coming in, It's like it's good boys, he grown man, now, I can't grow up. Growed up? Respect you real proud of you, bro,

extremely proud of you, man. Thank you for your time and that look, we love to have you back. You gotta come around. If you're not playing ball, you gotta be. You're gonna be around the sign to help them guys out. Man. You know, he even even even come co host the show with us. Yeah, let us know what you in. It's this been Timason. He looked at. Yeah, you know,

usually I'm like now forty four. I mean, I kind of hit the bid, but I've been I've been traveling, so I'm trying to, you know, catch up, but you usually got usually not about ten ten thirty going on. Yeah, I feel that. Well, let us know when you're here coming to east Lands, and I'm sure you probably be and when we play that team down the road, but let let us know, give us the heads up so we make sure we lied something up for you.

And yeah, you can take my spot on this show, man. So I would always trying to man, I appreciate you guys have yeah, thank you, man, appreciate you a lot of fun. Man salute. That's happy all right? Man? To So why so yeah dark quares Denard, everybody, man, what an incredible. Look, that's a great story, you know, inspiration for a lot of people. Look, that's you know that song Rats the Riches, right like man like, he did it how you're supposed to do it, right, he did it by the book.

And yeah, we don't know if if if we never had a Keith Mumfrey that opened the door to then Dark Quest Denard and both of those guys were outstanding talent for us coming from Georgia, and so I remember, we remember you say what I did. It's gonna be a little party, so we're gonna join in the live chat and hang out a little bit with everybody

and celebrate because it's been I mean, it's a labor love. It's incredible. Man, from just a little old less than a year still, we're still not quite out of year, but one hundredth show, we thought it was time for us to celebrate. So guys, what's your final thoughts? Yeah, real quick before we jump off. I know, we had a great time this weekend, you know at Spartan Dog Con and uh we and

although keep in mind we're all one Spartan family. Um, you know that when we got home we got some you know, bad news, you know, Mamatron Nick Tron. They were in an accident on the way home, but thank god they're all fine. Uh, you know, prayers up for them, you know, if you're if you're a prayer warrior. I know the three of us on here are you know, let's you don't, you know, put our heel and hands up, you know, say a prayer

for you know, all of us in the Spartan nation. But the Tron family, uh, you know that, you know, they get through this, they kick this and everything you know pans out. Okay, but you know we're thinking about you guys. Uh uh, Nick, Mamatron, Grandmatron, all those you know, all the Tron family. Uh, you know, yes, yes, definitely, definitely all yeah, you know, glad,

everything you know was you know, everyone's kay. Everyone came out unscathed, but uh, you know, definitely And Mama trying to put that boy and Bubba rap till you get him here. We need him Bubba rapping, oldest man. Listen, I'm always good. I'm appreciative when we had defensive guests players former players on that. I'm always getting outshine by the offensive guys. But dark Quas Man, it's good to hear one his stories and how we when we bring guys on, we hear evolutional even Coach D or you

know we have. Those are the things that kind of give me, you know, the good feels of like, you know what, Coach D did his best with this program and then obviously gave it to Coach Tuck. So um, I love talking obviously shot with dark Quest, but I believe having him on a Jim Thorpe Award when are people don't understand that award how hard it is to win that award and to have one of being a Michigan State

former dog is just great for our program. But I enjoyed that conversation to Night Fellas likewise, I mean, yeah, dark question, and are you said that that was That's the highest trophy award just for defensive backs. It's very difficult to win first round draft pick from a zero star to a first round They're doing phenomenal things back in his hometown for the youth in Georgia.

You can't write it better than that. That's that's the kind of guy, a young man that embodies what it is to your spartment and that perseppearance and being able to overcome any obstacle and continuing on his quest as an old man. It is beautiful to see you know. So, guys, a great show. Can't wait till Thursday, and we don't forget the subscribe do the subscription things. Guys. This is fully different than subscribing to show, so

it is track. You have that technology, so we're tracking it to hang out with you with that one quick thing straight just so you know. I don't know how he did it, but they believed him. So notice and he scratch coming. If you don't see me on this show no longer. You know that the guy, No, it ain't let that happen.
