This could give me for our podcast. What Up? I'm Jizo. That is John Magic and we are back.
This episode stemmed from was it the last episode where we were talking about trying to find me a hobby? Yeah, and then yeah, because you know I'm taking I'm I'm in therapy and my therapist is like, you need to find.
A hobby, and basically you need something to do and go do these things.
Yeah, and when I tell you, I get stuck and I can't think of something I want to do. And some people can say, djang, you dj a lot, that's your hobby. That is true. I guess djang is technically a hobby, but.
It became a career.
It became a career when you've been doing it for twenty five years.
Yeah.
Yeah, and it's become like no, I mean, yes, it's fun, but it's a job.
You think back to what you did as a kid as they hear hobbies.
Well, that's what I wanted to That's why I wanted to do this episode number one. Maybe we could look back at when we were kids, because we had a bunch of hobbies when we were kids.
Yeah, it's crazy to think about when I was a kid. I felt like I did so much more. But that's just because you just have all the time in the world, and as you're an adult, you're adulting, so you got to do those things and work. But as a kid, your mind just ran wild and just did all these things. I mean, I just think back when I was a kid, especially being an only child, I had to like have a crazy imagination and entertain myself a lot, and I
used to do some pretty fun things. What were some of the things you did.
When I was a kid. The earliest that I could remember a hobby that I enjoyed doing was drawing. And there's a reason for that, and it's basically because we had a big family. I had a bunch of cousins. I had two cousins that were twins that were my age, so we were always in the same grade every time I went, you know, every school year, and they are amazing artists, and I just felt left out. So that's
how it started. I just wanted to kind of be like them because they were amazing artists, and I was, okay, I'm good at sort of like copying. Yeah, where I was going to say that, yes, they were good at you know, those artists that can just draw from the draw hand, and it's like perfect. I can't do that. I need to look at something and I'll be able to kind of copy it. It won't be great, but it'll be good enough. But I hung out with them so much and that's all they did that It became
a hobby where we drew a lot after school. We would draw the house in school. We would always win the art competitions. And the funny thing about my two cousins that are twins. One of them he's he How would you describe my cousin Ryan? He he with his art. Well, not only that, he paints them and he'll draw things. He I remember he even did things with shoes where he painted on blank canvas shoes and he would make them like Disney shoes and it would look amazing. So
he continued yep. And then his brother, the twin, guess what he does? He works for Hazard. Wait am I saying, oh, Blizzard, I'm sorry, Blizzard Entertainment. Do you know what Blizzard Entertainment is? They're one of the biggest companies that produce those popular video games with like the Monsters of Dragon.
It works for that.
He's the artist for those video games, so they've continued their artistic talent and hobby to this profession.
When I was growing up, I was kind of the same way. I like to draw, but yeah, I could never draw just on the top of my head, like someone said, draw this, I couldn't do it. But I was really good at looking at something and being able to draw it. And I was the same way in school. I was always one of the better drawers I was. I would always win contests or at least be in the top contest, not only drawing, but just in arts
and crafts in general. I was always good at I enjoyed that building things or you know, putting things together, or I would see things and I'd be like, Oh, that'd be cool to make a model out of that. I would be into doing stuff like that, making like miniatures of stuff like that using just paper or whatever I found around the house, and that would keep my mind going. And even in school, I loved being in art classes. I took like all types of art classes, drawing, painting, painting.
I was never a good painter though. That was the one that bothered me. Because I could draw something, say it was just a flower whatever, and I could draw the flower and it looked really good, but when I had to paint it, I just could not. I could color better, maybe, but just painting. There was something about painting that just I couldn't do.
Yeah, painting is a whole different beast. And going back to myself and my two cousins, we took painting classes and guess what, they were amazing in it and I sucked at it. Yeah, I'm with you on that one where it Yeah, but again those classes where you just copy what the instructor's doing step by step. Yeah, I've done that recently, and yeah, I mean I'm decent.
You know where I do that at and I still go like I still kind of got it is at Disney's California Adventure where they had the animation studio and they show you how to draw like Mickey Mouse or any Disney characters. And so I've actually recently done that and I always will post it like on Instagram, and I'm like, I kind of still got it, Like I'm good at following and falling along and drawing it.
But I wish I had their talent where it's.
From the top of the dome, right man.
Yeah, So yet drawing was something I did as a kid. How about you, did you have like another one we shared that hobby.
Yeah, I grew up playing sports at an early age.
Same.
I think, just like any kid, you kind of start off in soccer for some reason. That's like the earliest sport that I remember playing, and I started playing it maybe at the age of six maybe.
But before organized though, was it a hobby? Like I remember playing softball with just the neighborhood kids, football with the neighborhood kids, because that was a hobby, just playing sports.
Yeah, I mean I always played outside, you know, I always had I had I remember I even have a photo of like my little preschool basketball hoop and I even had like a photo of Michael Jordan like on the hoop. So I remember playing I remember playing sports as early as I can remember. But as organized goes, soccer was my first and it was around the age of six. But i've that was when it came to
like organized sports. But I played every sport. I always had a baseball, a basketball, football, or soccer ball in my house, and I loved playing it outside with the neighborhood kids.
I mean, do you feel like organized sport is a hobby. I don't know, I'm genuinely asking.
Yeah, I mean, I guess it's it's a hobby that turns organized. I don't know.
Yeah, Okay, I like that.
I like that, I guess because it's the same way with your DJing.
Yeah, because that's how I got into organized sports, was playing it with the neighborhood kids first, and then oh there's a team that you could actually join in.
Yeah, because you could say that about anything, like even how we were saying, like drawing, that was like a hobby, but people get paid to draw, so that it's also a job. Yeah, man, And I played soccer. That was the main sport that I played my entire life, all the way through high school, and I stopped playing after high school. But from the age of six, but I remember playing on my team's like baseball or my school's
basketball team. I played, you know, little league baseball. Never got into organized football, but I loved watching football, and I know you played football.
But my first when I was a kid, like eight, nine, ten around that age, it was little league baseball, So that was first. It was little league baseball, and then football didn't start for me till junior high school. Okay, yeah till ninth was it ninth grade? Yeah? Ninth grade? So I didn't play Pop Warner football. I started in ninth grade and then continued on. And I think what was cool with those being a hobby when you're playing as a kid is maybe it does grow your like
your skill at it. Because I was a decent baseball player, football player. I was like pretty decent.
So yeah, I think you kind of built some athleticism before you get into organized sport.
So let me ask you this. You know this episode is about finding hobbies now as adults. Is this something that we could continue because I know there's you can play basketball and gyms and all that stuff. Sometimes I feel like my knees are not the way the same way anymore. So would sports be still a hobby?
No? I mean I haven't did it, like a pickup basketball game in a long time.
Pick up basketball games for so much fun.
I guess where I keep the quote unquote sports is just the gym, running, still exercising, I guess that's where I can keep that. But as far as shooting and you know, a basketball or throwing a football, and man, I don't do that too often anymore.
I mean maybe that's why I started picking up golf. I mean a lot of it is, you know, watching my dad do it as an adult and like, all right, let me go check this out. And I've kind of grown into enjoying it, So I guess that's a hot there.
Go.
That's one hobby that I'm doing now as an adult is golfing.
Yeah, that's something I in mind getting involved with, just because I got a taste of like and I know it's different, but top golf was really fun to me. And I do like the idea of golf and the behind it, and you know, it's like you said, it's it's something that you could play in your later years that's not really that active. So I wouldn't mind getting into golf. That would be something that would be kind of fun.
Yeah. For me, all I did was like sort of like the top golf is basical called the driving range. I was doing and the guys DJ Burns and DJ Broti shouts out to them. They kind of forced me to play around a nine whole round And I've never played this kind of golf before. I've only just hit the ball in the driving range. I've never played a game where you put score, you know how many strokes and all that stuff. And when I tell you playing a game, I could see why it's addicting. So I
was hooked. I was hooked after they took me out. And this was just recently, this was maybe like two months ago, and playing a game, I could see now how addicting and fun that can be. So now that the weather's getting better, we're already planning to do an eighteen whole course with the driving, with the golf car, that whole thing and just being with friends is the best thing about that hobby.
Did you play? Were you a big video game person growing up?
I would say that would be another kid hobby that I'm not doing now and I have no interest in doing it. But of course, especially when you know the sibling rivalry with my brother and I, I mean we would be on the sticks every day. He was more on like the fantasy game, Zelda, all that stuff. I enjoyed. The sports games I was never good at. I was never good at the fantasy games.
Tech Mobile.
I was tech Mobile, Madden, Yeah, Madden.
All those games, Uh what was it at the time, Like the NBA games. Actually I got I got knowledge of golf by playing Tiger Woods golf growing up because I didn't I never watched golf. It was kind of boring to me. But then I understood like the rules of it by playing Tiger Woods golf because I was the same way. I played all like the sports games FIFA, you know, the MLB, the Blitzmrewer Blitz back in the days, NBA Jam, NBA Jam. Yeah, all those games were fun.
So I grew up playing you know, the Nintendo, the Super Nintendo, got PlayStation, and then yeah, I think when I got into high school, it kind of fell off. I didn't I didn't care to play it anymore.
Did you did you have those Did you have an era where you couldn't wait to get home and just get on the sticks? And mine was maybe twenty six twenty in.
My mid twenties, Oh really, I was. I was.
I remember living living here already, because I can imagine the apartment I was living out in Clovis, and I just couldn't wait to get home and get on the Madden and just I.
Mean Madden was big. I mean playing with my friends, we would uh have a bunch of people come over and we would play Madden and Who's Next and that that type of thing. But as I got older, I just it got kind of boring to me.
Same here.
Yeah, But then I tried to get back into it recently because I got a PS five and I played it for a little bit and that it's honestly kind of just been sitting there for a long time now. I just I don't know, I don't know if I if video games is something I can get back into.
So again, as an adult, it's not a hobby anymore. But going back home and visiting my nephews and they're on the sticks on I think I think they have a PlayStation five as well too, and they're playing NBA two K. I gotta jump on and play with them, and I beat them sometimes, nah, Like my nephew he's they're too good at it, man like. So that's when I know, Like, that's what I know. This is not for meaning.
Did you did you ever do the arcade growing up? Oh?
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Yeah arcade? That was that was definitely a vibe going to the arcade. That was fun. I would do.
My favorite one is the car racing.
Yeah, we sitting in yeah, thing like that, you know, we would still do that, Dave and Busters and stuff like that. But yeah, video games just not my thing as an adult anymore.
Okay, so that's a no.
Yeah, yeah I tried, though, you know what I'm saying. I did get the PS five, but yeah, I haven't really been playing it too much. I did a lot of board games growing up. Were you ever a board game person?
Not as a hobby, but I do remember playing a few, but no, not as a hobby.
Okay, yeah, I grew up. That was something that me and my family actually did often, like Monopoly, those type of games. We would play those and uh but again that stuff kind of died off as you get older.
Yeah, I mean when we would go on these as adults, when we were going on our group friend's trip to like the cabin or whatever.
Yeah, you kind of play more of like the adult card games, right, like Domino.
That stuff. I enjoy that stuff for me, it's all it has to have good energy around it.
So oh, speaking of cards, we actually talked about this but magic.
And I turned it down. Yeah, No, I just I don't. It doesn't bring me joy. So I don't see that as a hobby happening anytime soon.
Yeah, but it was big though, right, I.
Mean yeah, And when I was in my early twenty one twenty two, I worked at a magic store at the mall. As a kid before that, in my teens, you know, would you like.
Perform in front of your family and stuff like that.
To this day they try to do it. I'm like, I don't do that anymore.
Yeah, hey, go up there and do it's a trick.
No. When I was yeah, when I was younger that, yeah, they would gather everyone up and I would need to perform in front of everyone. I did that a lot, a lot of anxiety during those times. So maybe that's why I don't do it anymore. But I'll give you one of the big reasons why, maybe it's in my
head to why I don't do it anymore. When don't forget I worked at the magic store, like twenty one, twenty two years old, twenty three, you know, those are the years where you want to go go out on dates and meet girls and and.
You felt like that was too nerdy or something.
Yes, I feel like now now I will say, I think I've told this story before. In my early twenties, I impressed the girl with a magic trick and got to go on a date with her because of like showing her a trick. Yeah, a romantic trick. So yeah, I guess I've seen it work before. But in the bigger picture, I don't know if it was a societal thing or you just saw it on TV shows, movies where the magician kid would make get right. Yeah, I think that's why I was like, yeah, let me get
out of this. So I don't know if that's good or bad. But as a kid, that was my that was my mental.
Was something that I got into, especially in high school. Well, it was something that I enjoyed a lot growing up, but I got like kind of into it in high school a lot was dancing. Obviously a huge Michael Jackson fan, so that's where like that influence came from. And I remember dancing younger with like my cousin and we would like practice break dancing moves and that type of stuff. And then as I got into high school, shouts out
to my boy Greg. We would create like our own dance crew, and we were dancing on campus and I remember we did like a performance like our senior year on campus, which is something that was like a big deal for me because you know, I was like an introvert and I would never I never was in any of these classes or anything, but I ended up being with this class or what do they call them. When you there's like different groups that you can join, not classes,
they're like clubs there you go. So it was like a hip hop club. And so we had like one of our friends was like the DJ, and then we had another friend was like the rapper, and then we were like the dancers. And we did like a little performance in the in the quad and that was pretty fun. But that kind of stopped in high school.
The wild thing is, all these years I've known you, I don't think I've ever seen you dance.
Yeah, man, I mean I retired that and like I hung up the shoes.
It was almost like magic for me.
Yeah exactly.
I mean in the same breath as like joining things in school. So a hobby of mine when I was a child was playing the piano. Oh yeah, my dad played a bunch of instruments growing up, so obviously as a kid you just want to like emulate your parents. And just so I remember, they would put me into piano school and I was just did I was not interested in learning that way. And as the years went on, the same as drawing, I just could play by ear now not great, but.
I remember you brought in a little little keyboard keyboard in here, and you were kind of like jamming on that one time.
Yeah, so I I understand where notes are at putting putting a song together. That might take me a while. But I can't read notes, but I could play by ear okay, which I've lost that skill now. But that was a hobby when I was a I was a kid. Do I want to play the piano now as an adult, I don't know. No, I would say no.
Was that the But you were in band too, so you played other instruments?
Right, yeah? And band I joined band, but I played the drums, drum line, drum line, So music? Can that be a hobby now? It's almost like the DJing took over.
That kind of counts for me.
It's it's almost like an instrument, right to turntables.
Is this podcast a hobby?
I think podcasts are hobbies.
Right, I think it is. I think this is kind of our our hobby.
This is our hobby because I do enjoy doing it.
There you go, I think we Okay, that's that's one. That's one that I do. Some other ones because obviously you've owned a restaurant and I know sometimes like you will post photos of you know, the food you cook. How about just getting more into cooking.
I definitely love to cook.
It might be a little hard that you're on keto, but I mean that could be your lane too though.
Yeah, that's yes, that's what I've been doing. Yeah, I think that could be a hobby. I don't do a lot of it, but maybe you're right I should do more of it.
You ever go on YouTube and look at recipes or other.
Yes, that's where I get actually, to be honest with you, that's where I get all my ideas and recipes from, and then I want to go try it. That isn't another hobby that I do now, Okay, not a lot of but maybe I should do more of it.
Yeah, I want to.
You know, what is there in Fresno? Is there like those I'm sure the ones we're not those college ones, but where you know you would go and meet people and learn to cook something.
I'm sure there is you probably look at Yeah kind of cool.
Okay, we found another one, so we got the podcast podcasting uh D Jane kind of.
I guess it's your job golfing. Golfing, that's something that I might have to go with you guys next time you.
Guys, ye, and then do more cooking. Yeah, cooking, Okay, those are good hobbies.
Yeah.
Wait, how about for you? What are your adult hobbies?
So from Okay, does we're kind of talking about this off air or off this pot? I guess does exercising slash working out? Does that count for me?
It depends on your individuals, per Okay. For example, I think I think going to the gym for you as a hobby why, I don't know. I feel like you enjoy it.
Oh yeah, I mean I do.
So for me, I mean I'm saying this, don't take this like seriously. Yeah, but I don't go to enjoy like it's not enjoyable.
Okay, I do see, Like I see what you're saying, like whereas like, oh, I need to get this done because I want to stay in shape and whatever, like whatever your reason is. And for me, it's just like, oh, like, this is kind of what I do, and I do see the fun in it because I do. I'm actually somebody does like running. I do like running, so I'll like, you know, run on a treadmill or go for like a walk or go for a run. Like that's something that I do enjoy. And I've even thought about doing
like a half marathon and stuff in the past. I just I don't know, I don't know why I haven't like actually got seriously, but it is something that I've actually wanted to do, so I guess for me it is kind of like a hobby because I'm also not somebody that's trying to get jacked into and I take all these like supplements and I'm really just trying to like I kind of do it because it makes me feel good. I do see the fun in it listening
to my music. It's a good stress reliever. I get to like escape for myself by myself for a little bit.
So all right there, Like for me, don't get me wrong, I feel great after a workout. There is you know, you do feel good when you're actually doing it, So I do get those good feelings. But when I'm at home getting ready, no, I dread the coin like fuck, I gotta go to the gym.
How about is this a hobby? Being a moviegoer.
That that's definitely a hobby, okay, because it's not one of mine.
I've been as you know me, I'm a big moviegoer and recently I've actually been writing movie reviews, so maybe that has been kind of turning in like a more serious hobby for me. Okay, like that.
It's a hobby for you, so you are you are doing one another one for you that you do this, This one is definitely a hobby, is all you're collecting?
Yeah, I become a really big collector over the past few years. It's something that it was always been in me over the years as a kid. But now that I got adult money, I'm a big collector, which is why I guess this can kind of go hand in hand. Going to conventions could be somewhat of a hobby because that's where I get some of my collections and I see your your cousin out at a lot of conventions, which does that go? So does traveling count as a hobby?
Oh? I think traveling is on the hobby list, But for me, I wish for me, for me for it to be a hobby. I would want to do it more constantly, more often. But I'm I mean, I don't, I mean, we're busy with our work. Yeah, I would love to travel, but we brought it up in the last episode where I love to travel, and I could see that as a hobby. But do I want to travel by myself? No, I want to like share the experience with someone else. This, this would be a hobby
for me, guaranteed, I would do this a lot. But I think the whole Keto thing fucked it all up. Is being a foodie.
I was gonna say that. I was literally gonna say, uh, because that's something you've always been pretty big on. But yeah, the Keto thing kind of messes it up. But I guess you can still find an area of that's because maybe your thing is finding keto.
Like going to a restaurant and like this is what I ordered? Yeah yeah, yeah maybe because this I haven't done this in years, but where you go to the restaurant and then you you take a picture of what you.
Ate, yeah, and then you know you kind of like review it or whatever.
Yeah, I could see that as a hobby that I would like, but I just I haven't done it. After going keto?
Is keto a hobby? You probably don't enjoy it though.
Yeah, I mean I guess. I guess, I guess I do have hobbies in this I'm already just doing it.
Maybe that's what it is. Maybe we just do these things that and I guess that's what a hobby is. You do things you things that you enjoy, right, So we probably just thought like these are things that we do normally because we just enjoy. But if you really look at it, it is a hobby. Or like our job, we enjoy our job, but our job could be a hobby like this podcast, Yeah, is an hobby.
I think, yeah, yeah, I think we just u.
I think for you, I think you're looking for something to do with other people, which you kind of are doing that though, like gol Phoeni is just not as consistent this podcast. It's you know, like once a week, you want to travel, but you don't want to go by yourself. You want to cook, but you need to
find other people to cook with. So I think your thing is you're looking for something that you can do with like a partner or like a group of friends, and that might be something that you're just gonna have to like search for, Like if there is like a cooking thing or cooking classes, like you might have to do your research on that or do you know, do people like have classes where they teach people because you know how they do those You could take like painting
classes or those painting and you drink you know with those things.
Yeah, sip and pain.
Yeah. Yeah, So there's got to be like cooking ones out there for you. Maybe there's even like a Keto one out there. Who knows.
We just unlocked this whole hobby.
Yeah, just having a conversation we realized, oh shit, like we do kind of have cobbies. We thought we were just working and that's it.
That is how this whole thing started. We're like, bro, I don't have any hobbies.
We just work. Yeah. And then as we're talking, like, wait, that is like a hobby.
All these things that we are already doing our hobby, we just unlocked it, all right, So maybe you guys can unlock your hobbies that you're already doing. You didn't even though it was a hobby.
