Transcript

Before we get the episode going with our special guest, DJ Straw's fellow forty niner fan. You and I are a big forty nine ers fan. Oh man, I forgot about that. Don't remind me. It's okay. So it's been a few weeks. It's been three weeks. Now, does it still hurt you? Like, do you still feel the remnants of disappointment? Feel like it was after all these you have right, this is yesterday, like what happened? I feel like the super Bowl will just oh my goodness,

it's still bring up bad memories right now. It's terrible. I don't know. Does that hurt more than like not going to the super Bowl? In a sense, it does, yeah, just because like we did all this work and now we're just we're choking, like we feel like the Lakers. But you know, this is what it is. This is what it is. I mean because I'm a Cowboys fan and we've been frustrated for years because we can't even get out of the first round. Used to disappoint.

Yeah, I'm used to that disappointment. So I was like wandering, does it feel the same even though you guys been there like multiple times in the past. Few years, does it still hurt as bad? Are You're like, well, at least we go to the super Bowl. I think that's what it is. It's so close, so many years, we just can't get over the sheats for some reason. I don't know what it is. It's oh my goodness, you know what I wanted to ask. This is more just for funds. I'm not even trying to, you know, put

you on blast or anything. But it's not just you, because it's other fans that I see on social media because I'm I'm a big forty nine Ers fan too. But you know, when we're together, when I see see you, you're like gear man. When we're at the clubs, you're on the mic, and to me, sometimes it gives me anxiety because yo, like not yet, not yet, especially especially against this team, you know, even after the fact, like you know, we lost and everything.

But I'm still a Niner until I die for sure, faithful. So that's what it is. But yeah, it's like I'm trying to put out you know, good juju, like I'm trying to get out you know, I'm trying to put them in a good positive atmosphere. I mean, I might get in a fight here and there. But I saw a video of you at a big Watch party. Yeah, and last episode we had Marcus Anthony and here he's a huge Raider fan and he got you on on the stories. Like, I was distraught at that point. I was like, I

think it just happened. I'm like, oh, no, it was the worst. I mean, and I don't know what it is, but lately I haven't been sleeping, so I've been extra tired. So it was just a multitude of me being sleepy and then we lost, and it was just, oh, it was It was bad. It was he got me. He got me, I mean from an outsider looking and I'll say it was a good game though. It was good for sure. For sure. Overtime was good. Overtime was good. That was part of the best part of

the game, just because you know, we were both playing. But I mean, it was a defensive game the whole game, for sure. All Right, real quick around the room, who are we going back next year? Who's gonna go next year? Cowboys? You know, we'll knock off the Niners and in the NFC Championship and then were going and we'll get our shot at the Chiefs I'm scared because I think, you know, the news is coming out about some players wanting to lead. Yeah that was got fired

coordinator. Oh my a all right, So yeah, I don't know if we're going back. I think the Ravens are gonna get close, though. I think the Raves are gonna get a lot closer. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Lamar Jackson. We'll regroup next year and then we'll see what happens. I know the Lakers aren't going anywhere. This could give me fire podcast. What up? I'm Jizzo. That is John Magic, and we are back. Today's special guest local DJ in Fresno. He is a DJ on

the radio here with us on B ninety five. He DJ's multiple clubs around town. He's also the Fresno State Basketball Stadium DJ as well too. And probably one of my favorite things is he's one of the DJs that brought Date Night, which is that R and B night that we do at Lucy's Lounge, Ladies and gentlemen. DJ Straws. Yeah, Hey, okay, okay, what's up? Bro? Hey man, I'm just happy to be here. How much fun are we having for the day night? Actually, let

me just start with this. You know this was we just celebrated our one year at Lucy's Lounge day night, and Jizo knows about this. A year ago, I was kind of like in a slump. I was especially in my DJ slump where I just wasn't having fun anymore. And then you post this R and B night that happens to be down the street from where I

live. I live in downtown, and I hit you up. I said, can I just drop a thirty minute set because I was just I was feeling really like depressed during that time, and man, you letting me get on and play nineties R and B like got me out of it. And then you were like, just come back every week. And the crazy thing is, I told you, don't take care of me. I don't want to get paid for this. I just lived down the street. I just want to do for fun. Do what's for fun. And you know it's

on a Monday, it's only from seven to eleven. I just needed from a crazy weekend. I just needed to vibe out and I go home. Next thing you I get a text like DJ Straw sends you money, Like wait, I appreciate that. So I appreciate you for letting me be a part of this night. Man, I wouldn't have it any other way. Like, like, I don't know if I've told anybody's publicly, but I know i've told you, Like you're somebody that I really look up to in

this game, and to have you there it's amazing. Like just this past week, you're always blowing in the mind with like some new stuff or some like some stuff that I've been heard in a while. I'm like, wow, I can't remember this. So it's just the respect is there. I love it, man. I'm glad that you're a part of it. Like you you have been there basically since day one. Yeah, so well it's the same for me. When you play and I'm like, yo, I even ask you what song is this? You're like, this is an old

song. I don't know. So I walk behind you. I don't know if you noticed, but I'm looking. I'm looking over the song. Is this? Like what now? I know we talked about this on the last podcast, but Marcus, but is did you come up with this? No? Actually, I think it was between Marcus and Bobby. So Bobby actually owns Lucy's as well, so I think it was between those two. I

think he found out that Marcus plays the piano or something like that. At the time, Marcus a year ago he was doing karaoke nights at Bobby's on Tuesdays. So it just kind of drifted into, hey, let's let's see if we can you know, add something new. It just happened to be about around Valentine's Day. So the term date nights stuck just because it was, you know, right, like I said, right around Valentine's Day, and it was it just built from there, and it's a good vibe,

good people like. It's not a huge crowd, and that's exactly what I like about it because I mean, it's it's the right type of people. Now. I know, you say it's not a huge crowd. Now it's not a big place. No, We when you get one hundred and fifty people in there, we fill it up. Yeah, I mean there was there was I think it was the last fourth of July. There was a line around the corner and it was it was we had to stop people. We went to I think probably about twelve thirty that night. It was so

bad that they ran out of drinks. They ran out of drinks the fifth bar, So it was like it. Man, we couldn't ask for more, but it's consistently like great every week. So then it was Marcus and then he got you on and then you got a magic going is That's sort of like how it worked. So no, me and Marcus we went in there the same night. He was like, hey, I got an idea, let's do this. So I was like cool. So he plays the piano, I'm DJ, and Magic came into the guest set and just just

like blew my mind. I mean, everybody was singing it like I don't how are you doing this? So you know, I the first night is a memory is a good memory for me because we had a handful of people there wasn't what it is today. But I didn't treat it like a regular

DJ gig. I would. I treated it like a performance. So I would play a song and then I would stop, and then my next song would be For example, Aliyah, so I told a story about me being in the radio and me being on the radio in l A doing the announcement

of her passing. So like I would tell a story and then play a song and then I would stop, and then I would say this is when I was a senior in high school and then play a song and you know, we treated it like a performance instead of a regular when you were in high school. Stop. A good place where we always start with this podcast is are you originally from the five to five nine? So yes, I'm originally from here. Zip code was nine three seven oh six. I actually

just moved back into that zip code. If anybody knows that, that's the original west side of Fresno. Everybody knows Edison High School. I didn't go there, my parents did. I went to a private school called Fresno i administ Academy. It's over off of Clovis and Peaching Olive. There you go Peaching Olive. But white people don't really really really know me. Is because when everybody started to like make their name for themselves out here, I had

moved away. I went to Alabama, I went to go to school out there, and then I came back. And so now people like, who are you? I'm like, I'm from here. We're the same people like, I know you guys, And I was just gone for a minute. Yeah I'm back, but yeah, I'm originally from here. So Jizzo, either Jizo and I will have the same memory or it'll be different. But the first memory of me meeting you you were this was about twenty years ago. We were dating one of my interns and she would, you know,

bring you here to introduce you. Yeah, and that's how we kind of met you. How about you that same yeah, at the flavor unit at that point. Yeah, yeah, I do remember her coming in one day. I think she had a shift or something and you had came with with her. I think, so, I think that's when I met you. So yeah, like the same way. Yeah, I think I came in at least the furthest back. I remember a couple of late nights, did a couple of drops for commercials. You I were doing you guys were doing

her voiceovers, and yeah, that was that was Wow. That was almost twenty years ago, Tommy going by. I had to really think about it. Yeah, almost twenty years. So the question I have because I don't know this the next thing I know, see, because that's how I met you, just as her boyfriend. And then next thing, you know, I see you DJing. So I was like, wait was he because when we met you, you I don't I don't know, were you already a

DJ? I was already DJing. Yeah. I just think I think I'm remember her saying that he djh yeah, so I met her at I don't know if you remember the Red Room. Oh yeah, man, that was like my first love. That thing used to go. Oh we had fun there. We had fun there. That was a fun club. Real quick before man, we got Red Room stories or was well, just I don't the big one I might have shared already on a podcast, but I'll just shared real quick. The biggest memory for the Red Room is I was DJing

one of the nights. Black Eyed Peace came in because they were performing in Fresno the next night. So will i Am can't. They were all three there, all of them except Fergie, and they were hanging out with me in the DJ booth. And I remember this was the Vinyl so Therates. So will i Am ask me, what's the big song out here in Fresno right now? I was like, let me pull it out, pull out forty, tell me when to go? Man? When it was when the song yeah, so I played, he sees the crowd go crazy and he's

a wow. He's like, tell me again, what is this ago? Obviously we perks being in radio, we get tickets to the show. We go to the Black Eyed Peace Show the next day and the Black Eyed Peas do a segment where they go one at a time, they do a solo. So Will I Am goes up and he's all, Fresno, tell me what you know about this due. I'm like, yea, he took your request. Oh my Goodnessyeah, so that was you so Red Room? Go ahead? Yeah? Oh man, No, I don't have any stories like

that. I wish I've met Will I Am. She's no, I don't have any stories about the Red Room. That's just where I met her as a DJ. Yeah, so are you a J there? I was. I just came back from Alabama. This is what two thousand and six. I just got back from Alabama, and it was like one of the first places I went, and it just so happened and we crossed pass and we you know anyway, Yeah, yeah, but no, that was That's that's where I met her, and and you know, the rest is history.

Now she she was here and now she's not, and you're here. I'm here, you're here. So so then how did you get into DJ? Yeah? I started DJing probably like like pretty much a lot of a lot of DJs have. They went to the house party, you know, went to clubs, all that kind of stuff. And I was like, man, I wonder if I can do this, And you know, I just bought some stuff and started messing around with it. I'm like, okay, this is actually what year was this? This was like two thousand and four

four? So is this when you were out in Alabama? I was out Alabama. So I started out there. So that's why a lot of the music that I play it has a little bit more Southern stuff that I play. And I wouldn't say I identify as Southern, but that's what was going on. Was really like Little really embraced that young bloods all of those those were huge and that was big d in that era. Yeah, tell me when to go. It just came out and I heard it out there.

I'm like, wait a minute, we don't play this out here. I'm thinking we from the South. No, But yeah, so Little John like all that kind of stuff. That's what I was, you know, big on even now, like I still have that Southern music style, but you know, R and B is my soul. But like I said, I started out there and it just it started to just grow over time, like you know, but you build up your skills, you know, build up your talents, your your your music knowledge, your music bass, all that

kind of stuff. I come from a musical family. My dad played the guitar, my mom played the trumpet. So I started out on the piano the trumpet as well, played the drums, started playing the bass a little bit. But I've always had music in me, so I've always had that performance aspect of what I do. And it's it's just grown into you know what it is now. When you got when you got back in town,

where was like the first spots you were DJing at? You remember the very first place that I DJed at was it's now Cockies the It was the Smoke House back then, I remember it was an arena football team was here, I think we were we had an arena football team. It was the Central Valley Coyote Yota like that, and I did like a little lunchtime thing within them, and it was just it was it worked, and I met some

people. Actually I think I met Mo at that time too. Mo introduced me to Filthy aka Ricardo, and then that's how I got on with you know, STM. And Marcus and all of them, and it just I just so happened to meet the right people. I mean, I can't stress that enough. It's just getting to be in the right spots at the right times and with the right people. You'll you'll, you know, you'll grow. But uh, yeah, that was that was my very first place to

DJ out here publicly. Me and my cousin. We we had our joke. We had this place. It was called Club wet Wet. If he ever listens to this, he'll know exactly what I'm talking about. But we were out in our garage and we had just had some friends over and it just came out Club wet Wet and I don't know where it came from or how it came up, but it was just yeah, it was. It was. It was like six of us, so but it was. It

was a lot of fun. Man, DJ and is taking me places that I would never expect, and so it's it's just a beautiful thing to be able to do this for as long as I have and meet people like you guys, and then get to work with you guys. So, man, you brought up the arena football thing, So this is what what is it? Called where you think it's it's fact, but yeah, I don't tell me if this is true or false. Did you play for a local like pro league football? I did. I played Siro I think it was like

Triple A or something like that. I played for a couple of teams. The very first team I played for was the sangar Reinegades. Then the next year I played for the Valley Vortex and we actually won the national championship that year undefeated. So it was were your receiver? I was a receiver? Yeah, I was a receiver. Wait what were you a football player? In high school and all that? I played a little bit in high school. I didn't play like really like seriously like everybody else did in high school

because I was more of a music guy. But what made you join the team? They said, Hey, you want to come play football? High school had football? Yeah, we had for a while, we had flag football, So I mean it was I mean I had the basics of football, the football knowledge and play, but you know, I didn't actually get serious about it until actually left Alabama. I didn't play out there. Came back home. I had a couple of friends that played flag football. They

were like, hey, you want to come play with this team. I'm like, all right, So I went for the tryout. They put me on the team. Is this where like anyone can try out? How come I didn't hear about it? I think, so, but what do you get paid for it? We didn't get paid, actually had to pay to play. I was very careful. I'm like, I don't want to get hurt because you know, insurance is yeah. Yeah, but anyway, but yeah, I did play. I did play. I still have my ring.

It was it was fun. It was a lot of fun, all right. I guess the next timeline is when did you started? You became a B ninety five mixer? What's who put you on? You did? So? I was I was thinking you were going to say that I don't remember. Well, I mean I can kind of remember it. I mean to give her credit. I know, Mo, you used to ride for you a lot. Yeah. Yeah, And she used to always be like,

yo, we gotta get Straw's on. We got to get Straws, so shouts out Tom, who was always putting Straw's name in a hat. Yeah. And then I think, just you know, like how situations happened like an opportunity came up in straws. You know, I might have sent a demo or something, or I remember the demo. The very first song I played on the demo was the Cow you Want to Go No, Come Back to Full Circle. It was the theme song for Family Matters, and

I went into something else after that. I think it was like a Drake song after that. But I remember that I was like, I was so nervous. I'm like, oh, I was super nervous. And I've never been nervous like that to like actually perform and play for people. But I was super nervous that day. It was only like I think like ten fifteen minutes. Wait, were you doing it like like live? Or you recorded something I recorded, but like recording, and I'm still nervous. I'm like,

okay, I got to do this right. I got all my ed and like, yeah, I wish I could, but you know how when you record mixes, you've got to do it live. But I was super nervous. And you said, hey, sime a mix. I was like, perfect, got this one for you, and and the rest is you know, came in like it was National Signing Day. I think I posted on Instagram this is like National Signing Day and I think it was ah, we had an artist come that day. I think it was Flip Copone.

Was it Flip Flip the narrow flip Flip Flip the narrow flip compone? Well it's flip something okay, flip not that old, but no, it was. It was nice, man, it was it. It's been an amazing ride, Like I'm just glad to be here still. So yeah. Yeah, and you had you ended up like having major shifts weekly. Yeah, weekly. Yeh. So I started off. I think my first debut was is Thanksgiving and it was on your show. It was a Thanksgiving mix because I remember I was outside, I'm like, wait, it's about to come

on. So yeah, it was. It was Thanksgiving twenty eighteen, I think twenty eighteen or nineteen. Yeah, and you gave me a good intro. Was like I've known Straws for a lot of years and I'm like, yeah, this is it is true, like now things are starting to come

full circle. I remembered like thinking in my head back in the day, like I would be in front of my mirror practicing what I would say on air and stuff like that, and just to have that full circle moment, like I didn't talk much on air, but to actually be on the radio now and to be on this station, yeah, I mean this is the biggest station in the valley, so it's a beautiful thing. During that time before you got on, was it something you kind of you were like,

you know, what was the goals for you during that time? In the back of my mind, I was like, yeah, it'd be cool to be on radio, but I'm like, I'm doing all this without it, but to have that exposure. I knew that that would help. But it was never like the goal was to be on radio. My goal was just to you know, continue to work and then give good performances where I'm at and just continue to build my name, and it's been working ever since.

I'm thankful for the opportunity. I'm glad I was able to be here. I'm still here even though you guys hear me that much, but I'm I'm just glad to be here still. Something that I've always been interested in, is djying your main income right now? Yes? Yes, so the fact that I'm in so DJ can get you a tesla. I mean I feel like a lot of our friends though that are DJs that is like their full time job. I mean, it's definitely like a hustle, but it is

you. You are essentially your own business. And I mean we see Straws. He's everywhere, you know what I'm saying, So I know, I know you're working, bro, and he's got the tests. He see I talk about that. We're not going to talk about that skiing in the summertime. Let you know, these past couple of episodes, we've been talking about the club scene in town, so we wanted to kind of hear your opinion

on how you see the scene is right now. For example, music wise, you know, we've been airing some of these episodes and I was listening to some of them back and I was like, wait, does it make it sound like we're hating on house music, because I just want to know we just I mean, it's it's it's kind of like nowhere you're at, know your environment, and it's sort of like it's not really a thing.

So at least in the crowds that were around, and you know, they do have their crowd, but that's more event based rather than like a club. Wise, I don't know, would you agree with that? Definitely, definitely it's all about where you're at and you know your environment. House music has, you know, it's its own place, just like every other genre. But I'm not a big house techno guy. I can play it, I'll be stuck like what am I going to do next? But yeah,

it's definitely it has its place in the scene. Now. I think it's it's more so the attention span of people, Like they don't don't necessarily know what's playing, but they feel the beat like they know that. And yeah, I mean it's it's it has its place. It has its place. It's not hitting on it. But so do you feel like the crowd, you know what you're saying about the attention span? Do you feel like this

this crowd or this generation. It's just they want that moment of like that song coming in maybe for like a hook and a verse and then it's it's to the next. Is that kind of like what you're seeing? So that's why a lot of music nowadays it went from like four minutes down to like two and a half and the right. Yeah, so they want those quick, instagrammable moments like I'm gonna be the big the next big social media person

and with things like TikTok. I mean you have that now, so you have the you don't even have the original songs playing on TikTok, which is crazy. So people are like, this is the original song, but it sounds different, Like why are you playing something that's not the original song? They think the original song is what's on TikTok, but I'm like, no, this is this is the song, and I think that's where we as DJ's, that's where we come into play, like we still have to,

you know, remind people this is this is what the music is. But yeah, it definitely has it. It definitely has its place some context about the house music. For me, the context we talk about in Fresno is an example. You know, I'll get booked for a new night and they say this night it's gonna be more housey. We're gonna play more house and I get excited because I don't usually get to play that stuff. Excuse me. So the night starts, I play some of my favorite house stuff.

The crowd is there, and then what happens. You get booed. They yell at you this this sucks, and then people leave. I've literally witnessed a crowd of people leave because of the music I'm playing. Yeah, so that's why we've been talking about music lately. So then on the episodes, I'm not hating on house because I love playing house. Yes, So then do you feel that the house music that's coming more from a place of a promoter and a club owner wanting you to play that not so much to the

crowd. I think it's more so it's it's safe. And I remember the episode you guys was talking to the club owner and he was like, you know, every venue has the one thing that would they want to keep keep everybody safe. I don't know why I can't talk today. They want to keep everybody safe. And with house music being that there's not too many lyrics in it, it's not promoting something, you know, crazy other than probably

not aggressive ocaine in the bathroom. But it's definitely something that that's safe. So I would agree with that. But like you said, event based, because there's I've been seeing lately. Our friends are like Don Solo and that crew, They've been holding some amazing house events. Yeah. But at the same time is do those people only go to those because I don't see him at our spots. Not really? Yeah, So I think it's the younger

crowd. I can say that now because I guess I'm older. But the younger crowd they do like the you know, the the beats and then you know, being high energy and all that kind of stuff. But then you also have that same younger crowd that likes the most ratchet stuff as well. So I'm like, how does this work? And then we have like the ratchet or the house ratchet remixes. Well, I don't know what's going on.

So it definitely has its own built in crowd, and I think that's definitely something that you know, club owners they want to you know, keep their crowds safe and they want to keep keep their crowds happy. Because I'll get like, you know, the most uppity places and want to hear the most ratchet stuff. I'm like, how does this work? And then they look at me like I'm the one. I'm like, no, this is

what they've been asking for. So yeah, it's it's yeah. Let me ask you about this topic because I wonder how you see it in your eyes when it comes to date night, this R and B night that we've built, Like you said, you've seen nights where there's a line around the block, and then we've seen nights where it's just a handful of people in there. But what's constant is people are talking about it. Right, Oh my gosh, you guys do this night. I'm going to be there, this

and that, nothing but positive things. But how come it's not consistent? How come one night it's twenty people, the next week hundreds of people. I have no idea the actual formula as to why it's not consistent, but I mean, we consistently bring a great product, and I think that's the biggest thing. As long as you're bringing a good product, you're gonna have, you know, up and down nights. Like even the biggest clubs out here they have slow nights. I mean that's just the name of the game.

I think it's kind of like what we said on previous podcasts. It's just the crowd is not consistent, especially out here. Again, it's environment. So I was gonna ask why, Yeah, I just think it just is what it is. I just think that's what it is out here.

You're not going to have a consistent every pack night. People kind of just go when they want to go, and then some nights you'll just have where everyone decided to go, and then some nights you'll decide, And it's sort of just random unless there's like an event going on or a particular you know, like just the stars aligned. Sometimes a lot of people happen to be celebrating birthdays. It landed on a three day week whatever. I honestly think

it's random like that. Even just this past week, it's day night and Valentine's Day is like two days later. But there weren't that many people there. Yeah, so maybe people were saving just soa on windy something like that, or who knows, who knows. It could be you know, a multitude of things, or a lot of people went to the concert that was here on Saturday. That was the pat crowd. You know how from that they can never do like two things in a row. You know, it's

like pick one for the week. And the super Bowl was, you know, the day before. Yeah. The good thing about the Super Bowl is people don't know this. Well I'm sure they do know now, but even though Taylor Swift one, it was the most to watch super Bowl in history. No, it was the most watched telecast and not just super Bowl like things that people watch ever, so crazy, Yeah, I mean, and let's not even start on the halftime show, because who I've seen you DJ

so many places for so many people. Is there a highlight of your DJ career? A favorite spot? Maybe one of my favorite spots honestly is Lucy's. It's one of my favorite places because it's it's small and intimate. We do, you know, we can do the big stages all the time, but when you have the ability to sit down and touch these people in like, interact with these people and actually get to know some, it's it's it's

a lot different. I mean, I've dd'd at the Save March Center, I've done you know, cethern Arena, I've done, you know, all the biggest places out here. But just to have those small places like I can come and just relax, like like we can unwind from our busy weekends and just have fun. That's that's that's priceless to me. That's priceless. You said the Save March Center. So let's talk about you being the men's basketball or is it just buy basketball all together? Is it just me?

It's just men's. It's just men's. Every once in a while that have me for the women's, But that's that's a different story as to why they don't have a d D for the women's but yeah, so one one game Straws can make it. And he hit me up and he was like, do you want to do this? And I've never done a basketball game ever in my life, but I've been to many Lakers games in my head like that. Yeah, sound effects and like when they do the kiss cam,

I know it's so I'm excited. But do you remember I facetimed you when I got them? Like, Yo, what am I supposed to do? Yes? So the thing about the Save Mar Center is when you plug into their sound system there's a delay. Ye, so, and you got to have headphones. I normally have a monitor, but I just got some new headphones, some in ears and they work great. And to be there and push a button and wait for the sound to come out, I'm like, oh shoot. And my first time dtaing there for that, it was like

I just gotta suck it? Did? I mean? How is it like a second? It's about I want to say a little over half a second. It may not seem like enough, right, Yeah, it's like but yeah, the Save Mart Center and Fresno State man shouts out to them. They just had a game last night. It was Valentine's Day. It was a great kiss cam. So wait, so what is the vibe? Is it like a Lakers game or is it more just you said the like in

between timeouts, or let me just say how organized it is. So you wear these headphones where there's a director of the marketing entertainment, so that when you oh, by the way, you have a script of when to play songs, not what to play, but when to play songs. And then the director talks to you through you know, to the headset, like okay, after this time out right here play Uh, we're gonna do dance camps, so play something, you know. So it's super organized, it's not

it's not a party or anything. You're kind of setting the mood, right, yeah, exactly. So the thing about that you always want to keep the energy up there because if the crowd's not into it, the team is not going to be into yea, even if the team is playing bad, if the crowd's into it, they'll find a way to come back. I don't know what's been going on lately. You know, it's all about energy

there and having fun and remembering that there are a lot of kids. Yeah, clean versions, Yeah, even the clean versions still have dirty words. And I messed up last night because I played the can we Cuss on here? Yeah? Okay, it said ass like it's it's a clean version of the record, but it said ass yeah. And you know, I was Rich Rich mayby Daddy City. I was thinking about that and one time I did mess up, though I wouldn't miss. Didn't mess up, but I

read the room wrong. And for the kiss cam, I played a hotline by Pretty Ricky Oh, and I might have got a little too sexy with that. So, I mean, you have your trial and errors, but at the end, it's it's all fun and it's all just great stuff there. Super Yeah, it's super exciting. I got to you know, when they do a timeout and you want the crowd hype, you play it like that or housey energy and then you see the crowd. Do you do stuff

at halftime? Yeah? So not too much during halftime because they have different promotions going on. I have like a hot dog race, you know. Just just recently they signed on the Fresno State WAVETS. It's a new dance team. It's kind of like the Southern Have you seen like a Southern football

games the not necessarily cheerleaders girls. They started with them this year. Yeah, they did a dance performance yesterday and also the I don't know how many did for dance teams that are at Fresno State, they have a lot and they have like different versions of their cheerleading group too. Anyway, but they always have stuff going on during halftime. So I mean, for the most part, I'll probably played me maybe play the last five minutes a halftime.

Last time last night it was you know, like the last three minutes a half time. But in those three minutes, you just got to give them everything. You got to give them everything. Yeah, I gotta shout you out because I remember one of the reasons why I facetimed you is because you play during the when they do the warm ups. Yeah, and I was like, what do you players want to hear? Yeah, you gave me these songs that I didn't have, so I have to download. I have

to download all. I went to them and ask like, gays, what do you guys want to hear? That's a good way. So yeah, So I mean the thing is I do have to keep it clean and a lot of the music that they request, they don't have the clean versions of it. Yeah, but I mean you do your best. You do your best, you still play what's hot. And then you know they're younger, and I have to remember that because we're almost what like fifteen years removed from

that me. I'm not going to say you so, just to remember, like they have like new music coming out every five minutes, so it's like to be on top of it. It's it's stressful, but it's fun. I'm gonna wrap it up with this story right here. You you may know this because either I told you or the guy that I'm about to say told you. So here at iHeartRadio B ninety five. Sometimes we're needed, our DJ skills are needed for corporate parties. So our GM hit me up like,

hey, are you available to DJ this corporate party. It's like it's like super important. It's tie student and booted. You know, you gotta play a variety of music, not just everything eighty seventies rocking. And I looked at the date and I just I wasn't available. So he was like who can you get? Like can you get this guy? This guy? And I told our GM, like I think Straws would be able to do it, and he's like at first, r GM was like, are you sure. I'm like, yeah, I think he'll be able to hold it

down. So fast forward to the event. I don't even know how it went. I don't even hit you up. Oh no, you you text me up? Oh I text you like because I was kind of nervous. Yeah, So I said, how's it going? And you showed me a picture set up. It was you gave me a whole bunch of banners and all that. He put the radio banners behind him. He made it, he made it look good. And the next day our GM comes up to

me at my desk and says, read this email. And when he showed it to me, I'm like, oh no, oh no, it's like, read this email. It's from the corporate that party that I read it. I mean, obviously I don't know exact email, but basically it said that DJ you gave us was the best played everything that the whole crowd wanted. We loved him, nothing but praise, and I was just like and

sweating bullets. Our GM is like, a Straw's available available, So where do you get Is it just being a professional knowing the scene of what to play. A lot of it is is like we said, trial and error, Like you go to these things, you go in blind. There was a quote I forgot where it came from or where I saw it, but it was like, imagine being in front of a room full of strangers and having to entertain them for for however long you don't know. You don't know

them, they don't know you. They're just they're just coming to have fun. And I try to put myself in that mindset. I'm like, okay, I'm a blank slate. I'm gonna go look at you. I'm gonna look at you. I'm gonna play this. I'm gonna play this see if it works. You know, trial and error and and it just you know, after a certain a certain amount of time, you can finally walk into a room like okay, I know this will work. And you know it was. I think it was a winery, right yep, And I'm like,

okay, I can play wine tasting music. I have some of that, and having an extensive library helps too, but you know, being able to walk into a room and genuinely be like, okay, I want to make this person dance because they can be the most stiff person in the room, but they'll have the most fun and it's the best. And yeah, to be able to, you know, go and do that. I mean I'm still thankful for that. I'd want some more of their wine. But it was a lot of fun that night. It was a lot of fun

that day. You've ever been in a situation at event or club where you just it was just a tough crowd. You just cant figure them out. They just didn't like anything. Yeah, and that's where alcohol comes into play. Shots. Everybody gets shot right now. Yes, look, that is my favorite thing, and nobody's having fun. I let's go get something to drink. But no, every every time I'm in that situation, it's like, oh, it's a headache, and it seems like the night takes forever.

I mean we're only there for four hours, but it seems like twelve. Yeah. I think the hardest time that I've ever had was actually one of my best performances. It was a concert. It was Keith Sweat at the Save Mart Center. It was like two, I want to say, two or three years ago. My hard drive crashed right before ours go on,

and I'm literally going in blind. I see that it's reading on my computer, but I don't know what music is there, so I have to go in and type in every single song and it it, it was, it was. Oh man, almost cried because I'm sitting there. There's a video of me somewhere where I'm just sitting there on the side of the stage like this with my hands in my head and you know, searching on my computer trying to get this thing to work. And it turned out to be

one of my best performances. And I don't know how I did it, but I mean, you know, you put yourself in the situation to win, even if you don't know how, and you know I did, so I'm blessed. I think the main thing that I'll say is since I met you about twenty years ago, you've been the same outstanding stand up dude. You've just been the nicest, the you know, always you look out for people. Because randomly one day he I don't know if it was a text or a call, and you go, hey, just want to know what

colone do you wear. I'm like, what's Oh yeahlone too, that's a random question. So I told him, and it's pretty expensive. He came to the station and gave me a whole bottle. I was like, man, yeah, I got one too, matter fact, still got it. Yeah, I shoot, I go through Colonne like shoes. But no. But yeah, man, you've just been the coolest dude. So I think that's why you continue to have this success is just because of your personality of what kind of person you are. Man. I appreciate that. I really

do. Man. I try to be the best I can because you never know what somebody else is going through. So yeah, the best thing you can do is just smile, give somebody, give somebody some positivity because you never know what they're going through. Shouts out my people over in Macy's. That's where we got the clone. So yeah, yeah you were DJing. Yeah yeah, I still do. I was, a matter of fact, I was just past there this past weekend. It was fun. But yeah,

shout out your where are you at these days? Where do you want to shoot? We got Lucy's on Mondays Date Night. Matter of fact, Yeah, Lucy's Monday Date Night seven to eleven, ish Me and Marcus Magic. It's been a staple in this community. We had what do I have coming up? Thursday? Nights. I just started Thursdays at Vibes. It's called Throwback Thursdays. Oh nice. We'll be doing some of that stuff and then just random stuff here and there. Man State games Resno State. Yeah,

their season's almost over. But you know, we're having fun. We're having we're having fun. Man. We appreciate you doing the episode. Man, I'm glad to be here. Man, good times. We appreciate it.
