Episode description

Brian Markinson returns to the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to talk about his latest role: that of Buke on the APTN series Tribal. Tribal premiered on APTN on February 20 and is showrunner Ron E. Scott’s first outing after his critically acclaimed Blackstone concluded in 2015. Tribal stars Jessica Matten as Sam Woodburn, a young Indigenous woman who is appointed Chief of Tribal Police in the wake of a corruption scandal and finds herself forced to partner with Buke, a grizzled, racist, angry white cop from the nearby Metropolitan Police Force. Tribal is entertaining, but given the current climate – where the relationship between the Canadian government and First Nations people is strained, and where earnest ideas about reconciliation seems like a distant memory – it’s also important. In this thought-provoking and at times joyful episode, Brian talks about what drew him to Buke, and opines on how a show like Tribal can move conversations around reconciliation, privilege, and decolonization forward.
