This is the warning.
This will be and ask me anything where I answer your questions. The question is from Janice, and in summary, it's this, why is Haiti and American responsibility? Why are in other countries in the world stepping up? And Janie adds she understands the issue, she lives in Florida. Well, Janice, there's not an easy answer other than the truth. And the truth is the United States of America is the most powerful nation in world history, and what happens outside
of our borders will affect us here at home. The chaos inside of Haiti will leave Haiti now and it will come to Florida. We have a stake instability in the hemisphere and all over the world. American leaders have always understood this, going all the way back to the beginning of the Republic with the Monroe Doctrine, for instance.
There is a question of humanity at hand, and one of the things in our divided time that we forget to do is show each other grace, to be able to look at the opposition in politics and find decency and shared humanity. You may not know this, but the effort begun under the George W. Bush administration and followed on by the Obama administration and even the Trump administration after that. PEP Far, the President's emergency plan for age relief in Africa has saved nearly thirty million human lives.
Think of the genius that has been saved, and it will be saved for generations of writers, of painters, of scientists, of engineers. It's impossible to fully understand and comprehend what it means to save that many lives. It would be wonderful if Canada was able to meet its responsibilities, but it cannot because it will not. And whether they do or not, it does not abrogate the fundamental moral responsibility of the United States to act, not unilaterally, not as
a police force, but in the name of humanity. For the sake of humanity in Haiti, the United States of America must act. It must lead where it will pay the heaviest price, next to the Haitian people themselves. The question is about the state of the Union address and whether there are any rules imposed on members of Congress with regard to when they stand, when they sit, when they cheer, when they boo, if there are any policies, if you will, regarding decorum, And the answer is there
is not. Unfortunately, the State of the Union is a special occasion because it is the gathering of the whole American government under the Capital Dome, where the democratic branch is coequal come together. The Court is represented the legislative branch,
and the executive the legislative branch. The Article one branch of government invites the executive branch, in the form of the Office of the President of the United States, to the capital to give an address on the State of the Union, which is constitutionally mandated, though its form is not. For much of the history, the State of the Union was delivered as a letter. The practice of delivering it as an address is a modern invention, but it has
become steeped in tradition. There are ceremonies in most democratic nations the preface the opening of their parliamentary bodies. Many times the head of state is represented, and that head of state is a constitutional monarch. This is the case in the United Kingdom, in Norway and Sweden, Denmark and
other countries. In the United States, the only time all the coequal branches of government together that the American people see is for this occasion, and when they stand and cheer when the House Sergeant of Arms announces, ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States of America. A great war goes. It is for the continuity of the Republic that the elected representatives are cheering. It is for the continuity of the peaceful transition of power the day are cheering.
It is for the preservation of the Union through tribulation, war, civil war, depression that they are cheering. It is a magnificent event that should evoke patriotic pride. It is a dignified occasion that has been soleied by the antics of
this era's depraved members of Congress. Going back to Joe Wilson, who a Republican from South Carolina, like Nancy Mace, like Lindsey Graham, like Tim Scott, was well drunk on the floor of the House when he shouted, you lie at the President of the United States, opening this modern era of a total collapse of all dignity when the three branches of government come together. The stripping of dignity from our democracy, from our process, from our country, from our
institutions is something that matters. Trump tries to pose that strength is dignity, that cruelty is dignity, but it's not. The restoration of dignity around our most solemn occasions and
gatherings is something of the utmost importance. We ponder how to move beyond this wretched err The question is around Liz Cheney and whether Liz Cheney might run as an independent candidate for president, whether there is a viable path for that independent candidacy, and whether said independent candidacy would hurt or help Donald Trump in his quest to take power.
The fact of the matter is is there is no viable path for Liz Cheney to win the presidency as an independent candidate, and any any effort to do so would splinter the anti Trump coalition, which would benefit Trump and make it more likely, as opposed to less likely, that Trump would be elected to the presidency. Which is the one thing that Liz Cheney has said all along that she would never do, that she would do anything
to make sure that doesn't happen. So I doubt very much that she would run as an independent for the office and ensure that Trump in fact won the presidency. So it would be very damaging, which is why it's unlikely to impossible that it will happen given the president's age. Why has not the administration given more exposure to Vice
President Harris Well. The truth of the matter is the Vice President has been mishandled and mismanaged at an epic level by the senior communications officials of the Biden administration. One of the mysteries and wonders of the world will always be in American politics, how it happened that Kamala Harris, right, smart, brilliant at communicating, has become a deeply unpopular figure and
known for being in effective communicator. None of that was true until she became Vice president, and this is important.
She was an asset.
Until she was mismanaged into becoming a liability. And the reality is for an eighty two year old candidate for president who is running underneath him on the ticket will matter, and she will be a factor in the race because many Americans will look and they will say, this is an election in the end that will decide whether Kamala Harris fulfills ultimately the duties of the presidency at some point in Joe Biden's second term when he inevitably becomes incapacitated.
This is a core underlying message that should not be shied away from. Walked away from or pretended doesn't exist in this election. It's a critical issue and the fact of the matter is that Kamala Harris needs to be reintroduced to the country effectively, this time by the Biden White House. The failure to do so is the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot. They need to do better on this front. The good news here is Kamala Harris is not dan Quail. She is an able political leader.
What she needs is a ring where she can do well in and that's the responsibility in the job of the White House Communication Operation. Gary asks, given the dangers of the border as a political issue for Joe Biden, why won't he make changes? And that's a good question. The fact of the matter is this, if we imagine and visualize, and it's important to do so for the purposes of defeating him. Donald Trump as the forty seventh president of the United States, and we pondered deeply the
question of how that happened. How did the man who tried to hang his vice president and incite an insurrection managed to get elected president again?
And the answer to the question.
Will be that over the course of the Biden presidency, many millions of people came into the country illegally, and when they did so, the national media lectured the American people about the inappropriateness of the word illegal when applied as a preface to immigrant to describe an immigrant in
the country illegally. And the fact of the matter that the millions of people who came into the country illegally and that the migrant crisis that led them to the border in the first place is in fact not happening at at all, according to many people who have political positions of authority in the country.
That's why.
And the American people will go into the voting booth and they'll take care of business on this issue. What people want is law and order. And this fits perfectly perfectly, round peg roundhole with Trump's blend and style of authoritarian politics, of strongman politics, where he declares I alone can fix it. Pass at the border is something that the Biden team
has not taken seriously for three years. But they need to hear the American voter while there's two hundred and thirty five days in this election, to make this issue as much as possible go away, to get it all off of the front pages of the newspapers all around the country, and to come up with a remedy in partnership with America's cities that alleviates the crisis in them caused by all of the release of these migrants who have come to the border. This is a serious issue
politically for the president. Underestimating it, turning a blind eye to it, not listening to the American people is not a strategy.
It's a suicide wish.
Stopping Donald Trump means understanding the root, the cause, the power of his demagogurey. And there is no issue that he has been more adept at tapping into than the native ast strains, the jingoist strains of the American right, the paranoid nature of the American right, and it's belief that it is being invaded by an uncivilized horde. It is racist, it is toxic, it is dangerous, It is divisive, but it is real and should be faced directly.
Clearly, and unabashedly.
The question is is are we ever going to get our country back and heal these nasty divisions? First, let me say I appreciate the sentiment of the question and the frustration of how nasty, divisive, cruel, and disgusting American politics seems and is, and it is absolutely true that there was something better within living memory for so many people. When we look at the degradations that exist in this moment to a system that everybody understands is necessary, important,
and must be preserved. Nobody has taken your country from you. A small capal has become a minority faction that has taken power in the Republican Party. And because that party is one of two, the third oldest in world history, the Democrats are the first. They have a chance of taking executive power and constitutional authority, with the possibility for catastrophic consequences being very high. There's never been a genteel
time in American history. There was never a utopia moment in American democracy where wise people gathered together and reasoned. It's always been a tough business. It's always had vicious players, but at the core, it was always grounded in a mutuality of belief in the primacy of democracy as an instrument to restrain humanity's darkest impulses and keep the individual free and safe.
We have evaporated from.
That understanding, which is the cornerstone of our society, has evaporated and we cannot let it dissolve. It must be fought for. It must be fought for by citizen action, by caring and participation.
