Episode description

This thought experiment takes us to the heart of religion, risk, and the choices we make based on belief—or the lack thereof. If you’ve ever found yourself questioning the existence of God, or how to approach faith, then this episode is for you.

So, what exactly is Pascal's Wager? Let’s break it down.

The French philosopher Blaise Pascal proposed the wager in the 17th century. It's not an argument for or against the existence of God, but more of a rational bet on what belief in God can offer you.

Pascal's Wager essentially says:

  • If you believe in God and you’re right, you gain eternal happiness (in heaven).
  • If you believe in God and you’re wrong, you lose very little—perhaps some time spent in worship or certain pleasures.
  • If you don’t believe in God and you’re wrong, you face eternal suffering (hell).
  • If you don’t believe in God and you’re right, then nothing really happens.
