¶ Surviving Storms and Family Visits
Hello and welcome aboard .
You are listening to the Ugly Quacking Duck podcast . This is season 5 , episode 14 .
Wow , we've made it to 14 already this year .
Yes , this year is going by quick . It's June Yay .
Oh wow , I'm not sure all that , but okay , we'll say it's June .
There you go . We are recording another episode of this show , the ugly quacking duck podcast , and it is just a week after , or the weekend after , the Memorial Day weekend . We had a pretty good trip . We got to go down to Mom's in Arkansas and visit with her .
Her birthday was just a week before she turned 94 , everybody so we got to go down visit with her . I enjoyed that quite a bit and we got to eat at a fantastic restaurant while we was down there a resort restaurant , kind of splurged . And then we survived some tornadoes .
Luckily we wasn't right in the path , but a lot of people were , a lot of houses were . It was rough . I'll tell you a little bit more about it , but last weekend was eventful and now this weekend we are recording another episode , so I hope you will enjoy it . You're hearing the recorded version , so that's awesome . So let's get on with the show .
Yeah , let's get on with the show .
Okay , you know , we kind of almost got in sync there at the beginning of the episode . I wanted to try that . We did it once before and it worked out really well .
I don't know how we did it , but we can't seem to get in sync anymore . Well , that's because you're not listening to me . See , I'm the one that should be running the show oh , you are , are you ?
oh yeah , most definitely okay well , we'll see about that one of these days . But whatever , what did you think of our new music ? Can't Talk .
Oh , that had some rhythm to it . Man , I like that a lot better . I kind of got tired of Bob's music .
Oh , you did Well . I like Bob's music .
Yeah , there's something wrong with you did .
Well , I like bob's music . Yeah , there's something wrong with you . Well , I'm sure that our fans and followers and partners were kind of getting tired of it . Package download that came with the Tascam MixCast 4 .
That's a mouthful , isn't it ? I can tell you were struggling .
Yeah , you caught me . Oh , you're so easy to catch oh well , whatever so how you doing , sonny , do you have a good weekend while we's all gone ?
well , it's kind of scary .
Actually , we had storms up here too yeah , uh , I heard about that , but luckily the storm kind of split and went around where we live .
That's a good thing oh yeah , it was a good thing , for sure yeah , um , I've heard there was a lot of damage .
That was just a bad weekend for everybody . That , uh , there was , um , tornadoes all the way . We started out at texas , worked there , the storm was , worked their way up and , um , they just kept coming up . They was in , uh , kentucky the next night , I think . If , if I remember correct , after Arkansas , they had another bout in Kentucky and southern Illinois .
It was just a rough set of storms and a lot of people were hurt , a lot of damage . So our prayers go out to everybody that had damage and loss of life , injuries . It was nasty , that's all I got to say . We drove around after the storm and , yeah , it was nasty , yeah , it was nasty .
But before we go any farther , I'd like to bring once again a little bit of attention to our website or not maybe our website , but what Buzzsprout has done , which is our hosting site . They have put together a neat little trick and it allows you , as a listener or a partner , to leave us a message .
You can text us and then you can give us a message , and then we will turn around and give you a shout-out on the next podcast , the next episode .
So what that means is you go to your app that you use to listen to your podcast , you should be able to pull up our podcast and right under the description it will say click here , text us get a shout out next episode . And that's exactly what it is . You just click that link and you'll be able to type in a message . It will go straight to us .
You don't have to remember a phone number or anything , and then I will get it , read it and then the next episode we will record a shout out . Excuse , shout out , excuse . Sorry , I can't talk .
Well , you can't talk tonight . Duh , duh .
Well , I've been having migraines so it's kind of hard on me to talk . I have to be more slow about my conversation . But anyway , we will give you a shout out specifically for you , you a shout out specifically for you and uh , anybody else that shouts out , or texas , you will get one too .
So we had uh three or four last week uh , we didn't have , everybody was busy and we didn't have any extras . This like yesterday when I checked guys , let's get it going . And there's still the email , theuglyquackingduck at gmailcom .
And you can still go to our website , which is theuglyquackingduckcom , and go to the page where it says Contact Us , and you can contact us . I actually think it's a comment page . Is what you're looking for . Go to that page and you can click on the comment section and type us a comment .
You can also go to SpeakPipe and leave us a voice recording and we can play that back on our show the next episode . But the simplest thing to use is that new texting app . You just go to your Play app that you play your podcast on , click on it , type in a text and we will receive it .
So it's pretty cool If it works out well and does a good job and they keep it going . It may help us to get rid of some of this other stuff . But email us or text us that's the two best ways to go . But email us or text us that's the two best ways to go .
If you like getting things early , we are still putting out our podcast early on our web page , usually a day early . So if you become a member , you will get the opportunity to get it sent to your email and you can listen to it a day early . Uh , if that works out well , we may start doing that a little bit earlier than that , maybe .
Uh , but before we actually put it out on buzzsprout , it'll go on our web page a day early . So , hey , and I'm already losing my voice- why you do that a lot lately yeah , I think it's the stuff in the air , the allergies . I still have my window open . I love having the window open , starting to get a little bit too hot , but anyhow .
So what do you think , sonny , about the storm ? Did you guys get scared ?
Oh , I did . Yeah , it was blowing and the wind was whipping and the rain was coming , but no tornadoes . They went around .
Well , they did go around and that's good , because I was worried about you and the people that were staying here because I wasn't home . But it turned out good and I'm happy about that . So , as we said before , we went down to arkansas to visit my mom and the last few years we've been staying at a cabin . There's a set of cabins that you can rent .
There's different sizes . This year we got one that has a lot of room because we thought there was some people coming with us .
They didn't come , but , uh , so we had this big cabin to ourself and it was nice , uh , we enjoyed it , but it's not too far from my mom's house , so we uh drive over there during the day and visit with her and then at night we go back home .
That way we don't put extra stress on her and my sister , because you know that's a lot of work , having to deal with other people and we still get to see her and enjoy her and it's good we like doing that .
But we stayed at that cabin and that cabin has a restaurant , a resort restaurant , um , and we got a reservation and we had dinner over there and , um , it's a little bit expensive for , uh , my taste you know I'm a poor boy but uh , it was good food and very enjoyable , a little bit hot .
We sat outside and I was in the sun most of the time , but it was still decent and nice , enjoyable , and they had a lot of the bugs that scream also . So that was interesting .
But , um , sunday night , um , we got down there friday night , I think it was thursday night , I don't know , I can't remember now , but sunday night , uh , the alarm started going off on our phones and apparently , um the two or three times they got different tornado alarms on the phones and Shannon , my wife , it woke her up .
I slept through a couple of them but finally I got woke up and it was about 4 o'clock , I think she said I woke up and it was about 4 o'clock , I think she said . And altogether there was five alarms , I think , tornadoes . There was actually seven tornadoes there in Arkansas , the north corner , where we was at , and there was a lot of damage done .
But we was only a mile away from Salesville , which is pretty close to the dam , norfolk , and then there's Rogers , which is a little bit farther away , but Briarcliff is just a little ways from Saylesville and those two areas got hit pretty good and we was , like I said , about a mile away from Saylesville and there was a little bit after 4 , I think it was
430 or so we heard a roar mean , you know they talk about tornadoes making a roar , and I could hear it . Um , and I grabbed my flashlight and opened the door because we didn't have any power . Did I mention that the parrot went out ? And I shined the flashlight up into the trees and you could see the trees whipping back and forth .
I just knew one of them was going to come down because they was bouncing bad , and I didn't mention that . Actually , what woke me up wasn't the alarm , but there was a crash . I thought shannon had broke something , was up and doing something , but actually , apparently , a tree limb had broke loose and fell on the porch , the back porch .
There's a deck back there , that uh , with a table and everything , and it had fell across . That had fell across that table , and it was a loud boom . Now , it wasn't a great big limb , uh , but it was big enough that it made a crash and so that brought me out of bed and , uh , we was up from then on .
So I think the power had went out and I think , think it stayed out until 9.30 , 10 o'clock , something like that . But they had generators and they kicked on pretty quick . That's one great thing about camping at that camp center .
Now my sister , Bonnie , had to go to work , uh , that day um , so she didn't get to make coffee , so I had her stop by the cabin and we got her coffee , and it was just kind of a slow , weird day um . We kind of got out there and picked up some of that stuff and watched what was going to happen .
Apparently , arcana , which was on 201 , which wasn't too far from salesville , and briarsville or briars click , uh , they got hit too .
I just like I said , there was three or four tornadoes that touched down and they all went kind of the same direction uh , they were just different , you know , um , across different directions and uh , it was rough and it made a wide sweep when they all got done . And there was , I seen a camper .
We went to a mountain home and I seen a camper that had got flipped over and I don't know if it got flipped down that hill or it just got flipped over after . It was down that hill to begin with , but it was on its side , tipped up , kind of weird . But I seen trees .
This one house in Mountain Home had two great big trees , one on each end , and it had pulled them out of the roots . There was a lot more trees pulled over through out of the roots the roots out of the ground , I should say more than I seen twisted off . There was a a few that had got twisted off the top part .
You know , tornadoes do that a lot , when they don't touch down , they just go across . But , man , the damage was unreal . And so they had that one highway , which I don't remember what it is , but it's the one that Briar's cliff is on , I think it was five , maybe .
Um , they had it closed down almost all day the next day , and 201 they had closed off , off and on for a couple days because they was having to repair lines and , uh , put in new poles and there's houses just done . So them people need our prayers , and not just there . So don't think that they're the only ones , they're the ones I've personally seen
¶ Severe Storms Devastate Multiple States
. But , like I said , there was people in Texas , kentucky , missouri , the southern part of Illinois , I think it went on , indiana I'm not sure if there's any damage and I think was it Louisiana , another state , I can't remember now there was so much but it just kept on going and it was horrible .
And then we was watching the TV that night before we left , which was what ? Monday night , sunday night and that storm hit Kentucky and it was bad and they was showing it . And then the guy we watched on YouTube I wish I could remember his name that storm hit Kentucky and it was bad and they were showing it .
And then the guy we watch on YouTube I wish I could remember his name . I'd give you guys a heads up . I'll have to do that next week so you'll have that guy to watch . But he got an alert from Virginia or West Virginia , one of those and they had a tornado touchdown there so he made sure his followers heard of it .
So it was an interesting night , that's for sure . I'm glad the people that survived . I pray for all those that had troubles loss of life , loss of buildings and houses . It was tremendously sad , that's for sure . The drive we drove into Mountain Home and it was just sad , that's all I could say .
And , like I said , that was not the only place that got hit . I mean , used to when I grew up we'd have one or two towns , maybe a state , you know where it'd go across , and that was it , and we've seen several states , several cities , several tornadoes , so a little bit more damage than we're used to . So a little bit more damage than we're used to .
And speaking of mountain home , mountain home is not a great big town or city town probably , but it is a sports crazy place . They like to come there in the summertime and fish , swim boat , just spend a lot of time there .
So you had a lot of people trafficking that town that weekend more than normal , because that's what they do in the summertime , and most of them didn't have power . They do in the summertime and that most of them didn't have power . Most of the restaurants , gas stations didn't have power in the morning .
They got it on pretty quick , but I know we stopped at papa john's and they had power and they said that before they opened up they was already getting orders because they had power and other people didn't .
And then we went through Seven Brew and they had power and you wouldn't believe the line they had because they were one of the few places that had power , of the few places that had power , and they said there that , uh , people were just driving around getting food and drinks because that's all they could do because they didn't have power .
I can , I need to take drink real quick , real quick . So they was , uh , you know , doing the best they could . Nobody wants to stay in their cabin or their hotel room when they can't have power . Like I said , luckily that uh facility that we's in , they had a big generators and they had generators for the restaurant and for the cabins .
So it went worked out good for us . But we actually stopped at the gas station to get a drink for somebody and the line went outside and wrapped around halfway around the building inside I mean not outside , um and they were all getting gas and lined up to get ice and stuff and that when I got up the girl said , yeah , we sold out of ice .
It's been crazy , so it's been rough and I don't mean to drag on and on and on oh yeah , you do , you like to drag on and on well , whatever , I just wanted to share with you the experience and some of you know well , very well what I'm talking about because you've been through it . Some of you don't .
So if you don't , um , pray , that that's all you know . And , like I said , pray for those people . Uh , maybe you can find out some of them and help them out and let's hope this is it for the summer , which I kind of think it probably won't be . But uh , all right , we'll just go on a little bit
¶ Natural Disasters Update With Recommendations
. Um , now that uh facility for the cabins and stuff , if you ever want to check it out , it's down there by norfolk lake and it's called whispering woods . That's whispering woods . Go down to arkansas , check out my own home and check out that place and the . The restaurant is called the grill and it's got fantastic food .
Uh , they don't have prices on the menu because they're high price , but check it out , it'd be worth it well , how come you didn't take me with you ?
that was wrong .
I should have got to go well , I told you before you couldn't go go well .
I told you before you couldn't go well . That's no fair .
You need to make it up to me do something . Well , I am doing something .
I'm letting you talk on a podcast , remember yeah , yeah , you're right , and I haven't said thank you , so thank you you are welcome , sunny , um .
Do you want to do any shout outs to anybody ? maybe a little bit later let's finish up okay , we've been talking quite a while about the tornadoes . Um , let me name some of the towns that were hit , and then I'll drop it . Uh , salesville was one , rogers rogers got nailed . And then benton county .
There's a bunch of little areas in benton county and I think , if I remember correct , benton county is where the original walmart started .
County is where the original walmart started , or bentonville don't quote me on that , I don't remember , but it's around there somewhere and then briarcliff and arcana , um , all around there , and there was more towns , I just couldn't remember them , but that's , that's seven tornadoes , I think all together touched down that night , and that's crazy if you stop and think
about it .
Yeah , that is really crazy . That's usually not heard of .
Yep , you're right . Maybe one going through , you know , 30 miles stroke or something , but to have that many tornadoes touchdown , yeah , I don't know if I've ever heard of that . Anyhow , we had a good time , even though it was dangerous and there was very , very much damage and some death .
Um , we have to thank the lord for what we did get and we got to see my mom . So I don't know how to weigh that out . It's kind of rough , but , um , we're back , glad to be back . We made it home safe . Um , we're able to do this podcast today and we'll see how that goes .
Roger roger on that right what do you mean , roger , roger on that . How about tom tom bob , bob bob ? Uh , I'm not sure what that means . Uh , I'm not either .
All right .
Well , what do you say ? We do earthquakes before we finish up . Okay , I think I'd be good , but Lily's not here , so I get to guess and I get to win .
All right , let's do that . Here we go . All right , are you ready to go , sonny ?
Oh yeah , let's do it .
Okay , then last week we had a total . Are you ready for this ?
Oh yeah , I was here but I don't remember .
Well , I don't either . I'll write it down . That makes a big difference 2,260 total earthquakes last year or last week , not last year . Last week , hello , hello . And how many do you think we have this week , sonny ?
Well , I think that's high 2,260 . So I think it's going to go down . Let's see 1925 . 1,925 .
All right , that's a good guess , sonny , I'm proud of you . 2,262 . Now 1,897 . So you got a little bit high , which is good . I like it when it's a little bit high , it's just a lot better . But here's what's weird . The overall count is high , but if you look at the 2.5 plus numbers last week it was 265 , this week is 303 , so they're higher .
The 4.5 and over last week was 81 . Guess what they are this week ? 100 maybe well , uh close , they are 91 . So we went from 81 to 91 . So what I'm seeing over the last few times is if the total is more , that means the amount is lower . On the magnitude , does that make sense ? But if the total is lower , lower then the magnitude start increasing .
It's almost like somebody's flipping a switch . We'll keep an eye on that and see if that really is happening .
But the last several times it has well , that's neat , I hadn't even noticed that . So what you're saying is if the total number is more , then the bigger earthquakes are less , but if the total number is less than the actual big numbers or more , that doesn't even seem like it's possible .
Well , it wouldn't be if they's all the same amount or the same magnitude . But see , there's a variety of magnitudes . So that's what's happening . We'll have to keep an eye out . But we only had two , six point , over six point . We had a 6.2 at a chromatic islands region and another 6.2 at prince island region . Now we had a lot of 5.8s and 5.6s .
Um , the rest of them you know , to make up the 91 , but I'm not tracking anything that's under six . Uh , it's too much , too much for me to keep track of . So there you go . That's the earthquake numbers for this week and we'll see what happens next week .
Well , that was fun , thank you .
You are welcome , all right . So one more thing I'd like to mention again , and I mentioned it before again uh and I mentioned it before we have , uh sweetwater , who has helped us out a couple times , been very good to us .
Uh , even helped us out with a slight problem that they didn't cause , but I needed help and they they got in there and got me together and got me some more equipment . So I guess I had well , never mind , that's not important , but I am very proud of them and I feel like I will mention them again .
Now , I don't do this for most people and I'm not getting paid by them . Now , I don't do this for most people and I'm not getting paid by them , but if somebody treats me good and seems to be honest , they even send you candy when you get your package . How cool is that , man ? I haven't had somebody do me that way in years .
You know Google or not Google ? Amazon used to do that years ago , but you know how that is . We won't talk about that . So I've got a contact . If you need to get a hold of somebody and make an order , they've got a website . It's sweetwatercom . But I've got an actual contact and there are several of them .
But this gentleman's been good to me so I told him I would mention him . And you guys , if somebody out there needs something , go talk to him , see what he can do for you . And I cannot remember how to pronounce his name , and if anybody knows me , they know I get tongue tied by looking at names , so you spell it M-I-H-I-R . Maybe I don't know .
Forgive me , gentlemen and sir , for being stupid , but his phone number is 1-800-222-4700 , or you can call him at 260-217-5338 . Give him a call . If you need a microphone to order or a new guitar amp speakers . Give him a call . Find out what he can do for you Speakers . Give him a call . Find out what he can do for you .
Tell him the ugly quacking duck sent you and maybe he'll send me more candy . Anyway .
Oh , that's crazy . You don't need that much candy .
No , I don't , I just said that , but I just thought it was fun . I do appreciate his helping me . I mean , this day and age , people don't do that . I mean they really don't . Um , I've been helped , uh , very few anymore . I mean , used to , people went out of their way to make sure you was happy and they would make sure you .
They honestly treated you well . Not anymore , um , and that was a good , good job . And I had the guy that helped me the first time also did that , but I don't have his name , uh , anymore . I don't remember his name , but he took good care of me too . They , they have good people .
That's what I'm trying to tell you , and if you didn't listen to the last episode number 13 , go back and do it . It's only about five minutes long . It is a salute to our soldiers that gave their life for us and their families that are still sacrificing , and all those that are overseas the soldiers . It's for those . That's what Memorial Day is for .
I know we celebrate and we have food and you know we go see people and we do all that fun stuff , but let's not forget what it's about the people that have sacrificed . I just gave a five-minute ceremony or no , that's not the right word , but go listen to it , okay . That's all I'm asking , if you haven't already . If you have , you have , great , thank you .
Tell me what you think . Um , this is , uh , the ugly quacking duck podcast . We're glad you're here . We're glad you joined us and you stayed with us . If you need to leave us a message , do so . Come back again , please . Uh , if you feel like helping us out , there's many ways you can do it . Number one way is come back , be part of the show next week .
You can also bring a friend . Invite a friend . Uh , if you got any enemies you want to make a mad , tell them about us , get them on here and they may go .
