For question one, what Roman emperor came between Caligula and Nero? This Roman emperor extended Roman rule in North Africa and made Britain a province. Name that Roman emperor between Caligula and Nero.
I think I'm going to get canceled by saying this. But who's between the diddler and the fiddler? Is that a thing? Is that offensive? Did we get canceled? I think we just got canceled. Who's between Caligula and Nero? Question number two. Sinology is the study of what animal what animals are studied when you study sinology? Question number four. We're almost close to the midpoint of round one. Question number four, what is the capital city of the Himalayan country of Bhutan? Bhutan? What is the capital of Bhutan? Are they the one that has the flag with the dragon on it? They are? See? They also do not measure GDP. They measure gross national happiness. That's right, idea. I saw that, I forget. I don't know if that was on
an episode of Jeopardy recently or something. I'm always like forty episodes behind, so I think there was something about that, the gross National Happiness of Bhutan. For this question, I don't name the capital city of that Himalayan country. For number four, Question number five, what German composer produced the opera Fidelio? Who composed Fidelio? What German composer was the man behind Fidelio? The oa her question numerosinko? In round one your general knowledge round we will
meet our Jeopardy champs real soon. Very excited. Are you guys ready for number six? All right? Here we go? Question number six? Name the form of an adjective that suggests the most or least of something. Name the form of an adjective that suggests the most or the least of something. It's one of my major blind spots is grammar and stuff that I learned many months ago. I've forgotten most of it, but at least I can research it for the show. Question number seven Sports. I don't know if that's
the dreaded sports question or the exciting sports question. Here we go. Cal Ripken Jr. Was a Baltimore oriole and, by playing in his two thousand, one hundred and thirty first consecutive baseball game, he broke what legendary players streak. Cal Ripken Junior broke whose consecutive games played streak for number seven. You're penultimate question in round one, your general knowledge round of you should know better. And again, if you think that the questions have been ramped up,
they have because we have two very smart people here today. We are here. We're at question number eight, the final question of round one. What poet penned the famous poem because I could not stop for death? Because I could not stop for death? What poet wrote that famous poem for number eight? Pencils down, all right, pencils down at home. Here we go. We're going to introduce our incredible Jeopardy champions that are playing tonight.
Hailing from Is it Huddo or Hudo. It's Huddo, but like Google Maps and all the stuff will tell you Hudo. But it's like jab of the Huddo Huddo. I like from Huddo, from the mean streets of Huddo Texas. A writer and stay at home mom. She won four times in a row on our favorite show, Jeopardy. She was a Tournament of Champions quarterfinalists from last year, that incredible group of a Tournament of Champions finalists. So happy to have you here, Miss Sarah jet Rayburn is here. Welcome Oh,
thank you. I'm I'm happy to be here. I would love it if you could just follow me around and introduce me everywhere. I like Sarah Jeb Sarah Jet, I mean jet jet with two tas too. Speaking of which, you can follow Sarah Jet Rayburn. You can follow her on Twitter at s jet with two ts Rayburn and she's also on Instagram at Sarah dot jet dot Rayburn. Sarah, what charity did you choose to play for today? I chose the March of Dimes because you should I tell why? Or
sure, yeah you did a mystery? No? Sorry, No. I chose March of Dimes because, even though it's a really well known charity, I thought it's so important. It supports causes that are so important to me. My daughter was born at twenty five weeks wow. And yeah, so she was a micro premy. I actually talked about that when I first came on the show, and she's a big part of my Jeopardy journey. It's marvelous, March of Dimes. Sarah Jet rayburns here. We're so happy to
have you here, and now your opponent home. My goodness, gracious ladies and gentlemen at home, Your hometown. I don't know how to say this one either. Is it mccuanji or mccungi. You got it on the first one. Mccungjie Pennsylvania, but he currently resides in Arlington, Virginia. He's a part guide for the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, DC. Again. On Jeopardy, he won four games in a row. He was a Tournament of Champions semi finalist, very close to being in the finals.
Please welcome to the show, mister Ryan Bilgier, Ryan Hike, nice to be here, So great to have you here. Ryan. What charity are you playing for? Yeah? I am playing for the American Battlefield Trust. Ever since I was a little kid and my dad took me to Gettysburg for the first time when I was six years old, I have had a deep love of American history, particularly Civil War Revolutionary War history. But I'll read
and talk about just about anything but the American Battlefield Trust. They do a lot in terms of education about American wars on American soil, so not just the two I mentioned, also a little bit of the War of eighteen twelve. They do education. They also do preservation of sites, buying up lands that may be threatened by development to be able to preserve them, in some cases donate them into the National park system. Very Well said, it's excellent
to have both of you here. You're playing for two wonderful charities, and again, win or lose, we are going to make a donation to the charity of your choice. That's a relief. Yeah. I don't like my odds against dry and I if we did him for fun, and I know we decided early on that would be kind of tough where a charity would get, you know, screwed out of a door. I thought maybe I could go and just make a sympathy please, Like do you want March of Times
to have money? Don't you? So you need to contribute? Can never beat Ryan. We get angry phone calls from the charity, like we heard the podcast. You were good enough. That's going on over there, Like, hey, we're gonna get We're gonna get someone smarter to go back on the show and play for times better mercenaries. Yeah. And before we move on to the answers for round one, did you guys play each other in
the Tournament of Champions? Were you guys? We did? Oh? We did so Ryan, we ever did he beat me by like a hundred gazillion dollars? Was not on? It was I lost count somewhere around there. But let's start going over these answers for round one and get our first score update after the first of four rounds. It was your general knowledge round.
There were eight questions in round one. Question number one was what Roman emperor came between Caligula and Nero and extended Roman rule in North Africa and made Britain a province? Sarah, who did you come up with for number one? Claudius? She came up with Claudius. Ryan. Do you agree with her? Did you have a different answer? She's probably right. I actually suck at ancient history relatively speaking, so I can only think of Tiberius. So
I think is the guy who was after Augustus but before Caligula. So I think she takes the lead here. So we have Claudius and Tiberius. The correct answer is I Claudius Claudius. Good job. Question number two was our animals question. Sinology spelled cy n O l O g y is the study of what animals will start with Ryan this time, Ryan, what did you put for number two? I put down swans thanks to the shy prefix swans. Sarah, what did you put? I also put swans my backup guess
is our butterflies? And RYANU but I put swans as well, But I don't think it is because that g's not in there. So yeah, butterflies are as lepidopterus. Yeah, that's true. I really like them. This this one was a surprise to me as well. I was like, what I should know this, I've heard it, but it is. It's the study of dogs. Dogs. Oh, I never would have guessed that they really need, you know. So when I saw it, I thought it was a good question because I was like, this is something that I think
everyone should know, like sinology is the study of dogs? Like I should never forget that now we all know? Yeah, is the prefix Greek? I'd have to look it up. We'll have Annie look up. What is the like? Where does sinology? See? Why n O L feel worse if it's Latin? It's whatever. Yeah, I didn't know, but is
the study of dogs? Surprisingly? Question number three. Virginia born female rapper had a hit debut album called super Dupa Flyback in nineteen ninety seven, the year that Ryan Builder was born Sarah, What did you put for number three? Okay, I am wrong because I don't know this. I've been thinking
through all the female rappers who have ever existed. Who I put was Lauren Hill, but I know she was with the Fuji's before that, so that doesn't seem like it could possibly be right, and so I don't know. I think Missy Elliot had already had an album long before that, and I just as soon as I hear the answer, I'm going to have flashbacks to my senior year of high school and be like, why am I older than
Ryan? If not for this reason, because it doesn't seem fair that I should have to be like that much older than Ryan and still not know but I don't, but I put Lauren Hill. Lauren Hill is your guest? Ryan? Did you agree with that? D you come up with your own rapper? I wrote down Missy Elliott because I'm pretty sure she's out of the Virginia Beach scene like Farrell, And the correct answer is Missy miss Demina Elliott
with why that just sounds a lot more like her. I had a really cool video or she was kind of wearing like the blown up garbage bag and I've seen them in the world. Is wrong with me? I don't know. Don't second guess yourself, Sarah, go with your gut. I guess that's true. Annie. Our producer is saying, Yeah, it's Greek and it's from kaion or k y o n equaling dog or from the Greek kaion for dog, which that's cool, no idea, now we know it would be a great name for a dog. Yeah, Kaion or Zion. Yeah.
Question number four, we're going to the Himalayas. What is the capital city of the Himalayan country of Bhutan? Ryan, Yeah. I memorized all the world capitals in middle school for fun. I call it the party trick for the parties I never get invited to. So I know that the answer to this is I'm gonna probably fulcher the pronunciation, but it's sim fu thim phu sim fuh Sarah. Do you agree? Ah, Yes, I do.
That's what I always am. Never sure. If you're supposed to say than foo, then put like I never know my dad, Yeah, something like that. We will go with the correct There's two different spellings too, so you could either go with him foo or thimpoo. And then there's Thimboo also thh i mbu was I saw when I looked it up? Was it's new to me? Acceptable? So Thimboo or Thimfoo is the capital city of the Himalayan country of aboutan Um. Question number five, what German composer produced
the opera fed Dalio Sarah Beethoven Beethoven, Ryan, would that's right? I have watched I watched this opera with met on demand through my college once when I was born nice it was okay, and like, people invite these two to your parties. They know things a good time. They're gonna be a good conversation around the wine coolers. Come on, let us in, let the nerds in um. This is the favorite composer of Alex from a clockwork
Orange. It is Ludwig van Beethoven for not uber five. Question number six named the form of an adjective that suggests the most or least of something. Ryan believe this is the superlative because it's not the comparative. So that would be like it's ry with r est is superlative? Yeah? Better or whatever? Warmer or crisper? Sarah? Do you agree with superlative? For I do? That's the greatest answer. Yeah, you guys, guys are the
bestest. It is a superlative, which I was like, I was kind of foggy and I had to do was like, I think it is that, but head to double check. It is a superlative for number six. Question number seven was your sports question. Cal Ripken, junior of the Baltimore Orioles, by playing in his two thousand, one hundred and thirty first consecutive baseball game, broke what legendary players streak? Sarah, I don't know, so I just said, Babe Ruth, Babe Ruth. That's going back pretty
far, so old school. You're kicking at old school and the answer her is old school, Ryan, what did you put? You're on the right team, but the wrong guy. Shout out to my dad, Kurt. He grew up a little bit in Taws and so he grew up an Orioles fan of the more follows the Phillies now, so he loved Calvin Rikin. The record, the record he broke was held by the Iron Horse Lou Garrig.
He was my backup guest just because I like guessing. Babe Ruth was not a bad guest, but it is the Iron horse Lou Garrig for number seven. That is a record that I think will not be broken. Ever. That's one of those where you're like, yeah, no one's gonna last that many games without being hurt. Question number eight, your final question in round one? What poet penned because I could not stop for death? Mister Bilger. Emily Dickinson reread it in high school. Sarah Rayburn is shaking her
head in agreements. Correct, Yes, Emily Dickinson, the lady from Amherst. If you ever hear Amhurst, Just no, it's Emily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson is that Poe wit? So we've arrived at the end of round one? Oh my god, we got a Barnburner. We got a barn Burner. Folks. Once again we have Sarah Jet Rayburn with five, mister Ryan Bilger with six. It's six to five. Ryan. You get to choose which color you want on the Intermural volleyball scoreboard. You want red or blue?
Like the blue taking blue? Going with six to five after round one, it's anyone's game. But what were your journeys like? We'll start with Sarah. What was your journey like to get on the show. Have you been watching the show forever? Like taking the test and all that stuff. Tell us a little bit about your journey just to get that that awesome phone call. Well, I have been watching the show forever. I started in eighty four when it came back on the air with Alex Trebek, and I
couldn't have started much earlier than that. You know, I was five, and I have always wanted to be on Jeopardy one day, you know, and it never had occurred to me. It always just seemed like a natural thing, like a rite of passage or on Jeopardy, it's what everyone does. How many times did you take the test before you got like through to the second round and then got on the show. I recall taking it three
times. The first time I didn't get called in because I was very like I had the flu or something that I knew I wasn't getting to get called for that test. So then I took it once and auditioned to Chicago. And then in several years later I took it again and went to New Orleans for an audition. So and after that audition I got on, and you know how that was the start of the rest of it being history. And we'll talk. We'll talk more and more about you being on the show and
being on the tournament again, this grudge match with you and Ryan. We'll get to Ryan up. Ryan, how was your journey just to get on the show. Did you ever try out for any of the like the team or the college tournaments? And yeah, what happened with you on Jeopardy. I honestly don't remember how many times I took the test. I can't really been that many, though I wasn't track. I'm sure I took the team test at least once or twice. I took the college test a couple of
times. I got an audition my junior year. I knew they liked me. I had Maggie and I can't remember who the other person in the room was. I know they liked me because she told me as much. But you know, there's only so many people. And actually I think my Lelane as the Pennsylvania small Liberal Arts college person got ta ta taken by a friend actually, Rebecca Rosenthal, who was at Swarthmore at the time. So I was like, yeah, okay, I can live with that. So I
was like, all right, I'll try again for the college tournament. Next year, my senior year, they didn't do one. So I said, all right, fine, I'll just take the adult test instead, why not? And I got an auditioned in Philadelphia, like right at the start of my senior year, so I went. I was probably the youngest person in the room. I was twenty one. I ended up being in the room with, as I found out later, one of my professor's daughters. But
apparently I made a good impression. I almost feel bad sometimes about it because some people tried for like years and years and years. I got through on my first adult audition. Unbelievable. I just love listening to stories because like each and everyone so far has been completely different, you know, Like me personally, I took the test you know, a dozen plus times before I made it through to the second round, and then made it through right there.
I didn't have to go, you know, to the second round more than one time, so it took me forever just to break that first barry and then get in. But everyone's story is completely different. For Ryan to do it at twenty one and Sarah to do this to like, you know, I need to do something for my daughter, It's like what a cool like it's just eclectic and weird and awesome in its own right. So we'll talk more about any stories you have with the the late great Alex Trebek and
the Tournament of Champions that was very memorable after that. But let's get into some more trivia for round two. Round two, Puff gold your grab bag. There are eight questions in round two. It is a movie round. So this is what I called a round where Ryan embarrasses himself because you said that in our quarterfinal game and then you just went down that whole. They asked five movies that I happened to know something about, even know anything about
movies. I didn't even study any movies. I don't know a movie to say, to study some movies. Yeah, Wall Street I had watched. That's the only reason I do it. I am guaranteeing that you guys are going to get some of these correct. Okay, there's gonna be no zeros in round two, pop Culture grab Bag. It is a movie round, and more specifically, these are Ben Stiller films and Stiller films, so there's
nothing too old on here. There are there are a couple I think that are before Ryan's birth, but he still has probably heard of these, we'll find out right hopefully my favorite then Stiller movie. Question number one the year nineteen ninety six. Oh my god, just a gleam in your father's eye, Ryan, nineteen ninety six. Ben plays a real a hole who is an orderly at an old folks home in this Adam Sandler film nineteen ninety six. With the year Ben plays a real a hole who's an orderly at the
old folks home in this Adam Sandler flick. That is question number one. Here's question number two. The year was twenty twelve. Four men who form a neighborhood surveillance group as a way to get out of their day to day family routines find themselves defending the earth from an alien invasion. Once again.
Number two is from twenty twelve, ten years ago. Already, Oh my god, four men who form a neighborhood surveillance group as a way to get out of their day to day family routines find themselves defending the earth from an alien invasion. Name that Ben Stiller film. Question number three. I think
it's a little bit of a deeper cut from two thousand and seven. Two thousand and seven, fifteen years ago, A newly wed man who believes he's just gotten hitched to the perfect woman encounters another lady on his honeymoon in this remake of a nineteen seventy two film that starred Charles Groden. I think that original film also was directed by the great Elaine May of Nichols in May Fame. I'll repeat that once again. Question number three is from two thousand and
seven. A newly wed man who believes he's just gotten hitched to the perfect woman encounters another lady on his honeymoon in this remake of a nineteen seventy two film that starred Charles Groden. Question number four another one we're going back to nineteen ninety six. Nineteen ninety six was the year Ben Stiller directed this film. Ben Stiller directed Jim Carrey, who plays a lonely and mentally disturbed man raised on television who just wants to meet a new friend. Once again,
this is from nineteen ninety six. Ben Stiller directed this film. He directed Jim Carrey, who plays a lonely and mentally disturbed man raised on television who just wants to meet a new friend. One of my favorite films. This is a good one for question number four. These are all Ben Stiller films in your pop culture grab bag. Question number five is from two thousand and four. Two thousand and four was the year the late Great Philip Seymour Hoffman
plays a former child star and a half blind ferret named Rodolfo. Those two steal the show in this comedy starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston. Once again, question number five from two thousand and four of the late Great Philip Seymour Hoffmann plays a former child star hilariously and a half blind ferret named Rodolfo steal the show in this comedy starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston. Name that film from O four. All right, here we go question number six in round
two. It's from twenty thirteen. In another remake, Ben About to Lose his Job takes action by embarking on an extraordinary adventure based on the famous short story by James Thurber. Once again, question number six is from twenty thirteen. In another remake, Ben Stiller, About to Lose his Job takes action by embarking on an extraordinary adventure based on the famous short story by mister James Thurber. Name that film for number six, and then there were two.
There's two questions left in this round. This one I think might be the toughest, but it's the most recent as well, so maybe that'll help. Question number seven is from twenty seventeen. An estranged family gathers together in New York City for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father, who's played by Dustin Hoffman. Dustin Hoffman plays the father. As another little tidbit, I believe Adam Sandler is also in this film, playing Ben's brother name Matt.
Film that came out in twenty seventeen. Once again in a stranged family gathers together in New York City for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father, played by Dustin Hoffman. And again I think Sandler plays Ben's brother in this film as well. And finally we have arrived number eight. Question number eight is from two thousand and eight. I think you guys got this one. Through a series of freak occurrences, A group of actors shooting a
big budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying. For number eight from two thousand and eight, Through a series of freak occurrences, a group of actors shooting a big budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying for number eight, All right, pencils down. Oh, I think we're gonna We're gonna see where we stand. It's almost, we're almost at halftime. Let's go over our answers for our pop culture grab
bag. These were Ben Stiller films. There'll be a few of these where you're like, of course, that's what it is, but you forget the title. Question number one nineteen ninety six. Ben plays a real a hole who's an orderly at an old folks home. In this Adam Sandler flick Ryan, would you put for number one? This is gonna sound really dumb if it's wrong, But is this one? Meet the parents, Meet the parents for number one? Sarah? What did you put for number one? Happy
Gilmore? Happy Gilmore? It is, in fact a Happy Madison film, a comedy where Adam Sandler plays a golfer. It is Happy Gilmore. I didn't know pen Stiller was in that, Oh God. Question number two is from twenty twelve. Four men who form a neighborhood surveillance group as a way to get out of their day to day family routines find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion. Sarah, what did you put for number two? I'm torn here too because I immediately wrote the Watch, and then I'm like,
oh god, but what is it? Neighborhood? I can't remember if it's called the Watch or neighborhood Watch. I'm just gonna say the Watch, but it might just be terribly wrong. So great deductive reasoning. She's going with the Watch? Ryan, do you agree with that entity of your own? Answer for number two? I have a big old blank on my piece of paper because I no, I have never heard of this. As I said, terrible at movies, And you didn't ask about the benst my favorite
ben Stiller movie. No, I'm we'll talk about that. We'll save that for the end. This was, in fact a movie. I think Jonah Hill might be in it as well. There's a British actor and it as well, and Vince Vaughan I think is in it. It is called The Watch. All watch her number two? Sarah Circle gets the square for a number two question number three? This could be the one though, that really
drives you over the edge. Two thousand and seven was the year A newlywed man who believes he's just gotten hitched to the perfect woman encounters another lady on his honeymoon in this remake of the nineteen seventy two films that starred Charles Groden. Ryan, If you have a guess? No? No. I read a learned league question about Elane May a little bit ago, but I've already forgotten the movie names that were in it. I think a lot of people
would have trouble with this film even if they saw it. Did it come to you, Sarah? And the time that we've been talking maybe is it the Heartbreak Kid? It is, in fact the Heartbreak Kid. That's so much better than my answer that I originally thought of, which was the Ordinary Man. It's not Question number four one of my favorite films. Nineteen ninety six. Ben directed this film, starring Jim Carrey, who plays a lonely
and mentally disturbed man raised on television who just wants a new friend. Sarah, I think we're up to you. What did you put for number four? I put cable guy? Ryan? What did you put from number four? On the Truman Show? It is, in fact the cable guy. Cable Guy? Ben directed this. It was a dark, dark comedy and a lot of people didn't like it because Jim wasn't playing his normal, you know character from Asponcher and the Mask, and it's just incredible. Young Jack
Black is in it. It's really really an excellent black black comedy. The Cable Guy from nineteen ninety six. Question number five was from OH four. The late great Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a former child star who is just incredibly fun this film, and a half blind ferret named Rodolfo steal the show in this comedy starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Anniston, Ryan, did you have any noe? Just a big fat X? Or number five? Sarah, did
you have a guess? I couldn't remember this one either. I remember the movie poster, but that's not helping me, so I don't know. It's a tough one. Again. This is a tough round. So you hear Ben Stiller and you might get all excited at home and you're like Mike, you're picking the worst ones. It's actually an okay film because of Phillip Seymour Hoffman and a couple of scenes. It was called Along Came Polly, Came
Polly. Jennifer Aniston plays Polly Question. Number six was from twenty thirteen and another remake, Ben, about to lose his job, takes action by embarking on an extraordinary venture based on the famous short story by James Thurber. Sarah, what did you put? From number six? The Secret Life of Walter Middy? Ryan? I think you got this one? Ryan? Did you get Yeah? I wrote exactly that, so yay, finally a point. It is a long title, Ryan's off the Schneide. It is the Secret
Life of Walter Mitty for number six. Number seven from twenty seventeen, and a strange family gathers together in New York City for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father, played by Dustin Hoffman. Believe Adam Sandler also is in this film as Ben's brother. I think this was a Netflix film, so I think it was directly on Netflix. Ryan, did you have a guest for seven? I don't have Netflix, and I never have. Actually, this is probably this is extremely wrong, I'm sure, but I wrote
down woman in Golden case. It has something to do with that whole like clim to Dell Blockbauer getting seized by the Nazis. Thing I can't remember they made a movie out of that or not? But I like the way your brain works, Bill Jared, Sarah Rayburn, what did you put for number seven? They did make a movie about that with Hill and me are in. I think, wasn't it Helen Mirren? But I don't know this movie. I don't know it was. I remember seeing this, and I would
have not gotten this title myself. So if anyone gets thus at home, give yourself a huge pat on the back and a gold star. It's called The Myerwitz Stories. The Myerwitz Story. It was directly on Netflix. I remember the Netflix adds for that. Now that you say it, I would never have. I haven't seen it, and I remember it being okay. But again, that title not a memorable and there are certain titles that are memorable and there are certain ones that aren't, and that's one of them.
That isn't the Myerwitz Stories for number seven? And then here we go number eight from two thousand and eight, through a series of freak occurrence as a group of actors shooting a big budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying. Sarah, what did you put for number eight? Tropic Thunder, Tropic Thunder? Ryan, do you agree with Tropic Thunder? I've never seen the movie, but I had to write it. I wrote a
question about it once for a thing at the college. We were doing trivia night for one of the colleges things, and it was right before Springfest. The team was the Tropics, and I asked us to write a tropic theme round. So I was fishing. I was fishing for all sorts of stuff and I wrote a question about Tropic Thunder, which, as I said, is a movie I've never seen, but I know what it. Give yourself
a point, Ryan, it is Tropic Thunder. And before we get to our scores, and he's gonna be tabulating the scores right now, Ryan, what was your favorite Ben Stiller film that was not on this list? Dodgeball, which is funny, Which is funny. People would probably never guess that because I'm like kind of a prude irl, But I don't know, man, My dad and I quote that movie at each other all the time. So we have a score update. We are at halftime here at you should
know better. Our contestants are Sarah jet Rayburn and Ryan Bilger in their grudge match, their rematch from the Tournament of Champions last year, and we have a lead change Ryan Bilger with a tough movie round. It's not his thing, but he's got two rounds to definitely make up for it. He's got eight points. Sarah Jet takes the lead with eleven. It's eleven to eight
going into round three. Sarah's in the lead. And before we get to the lightning round in the third round, let's talk a little bit more about our Jeopardy journeys. And you two are so lucky, so blessed that you got to play games with our hero, the late great Alex Trebek. So yeah, just tell me what it was like, because again, you guys
played with him during his last moments. He was very, very sick, and people have told the stories of just how sick he was those last few months, but again you couldn't tell by the way he performed on there. So yeah, we'll start with you again, Sarah, if you want to let us know, just like your memories of being on there and mister Alex
Trebek. Yeah, I found Alex Trebek so inspiring. I went kind of thinking, you know, you should never meet your heroes, and maybe this won't be what I expect I tried to, like really have to really temper my expectations, and he was not only everything I had ever hoped, it was just better than I had ever hoped. I mean I loved being on stage with him, and I was amazed, you know the first time he walked out, because everyone was waiting to see, like how is he?
How is he? You know? I mean, and the first time he walked out, maybe he walked a little slowly like we were, but then as soon as he started hosting the game, I mean, he just came alive. Yeah, I mean, it was just and when I was playing with him, because I played the Friday game of my first day, so I didn't play the very last game of the day, and so then the second day was the day when it was it just felt like his magical thing had happened to me and I forgot he was sick. I mean, in
the in the moment of playing, I forgot it. Like I just felt very safe with him on stage, like he knew what he was doing. He had such panash and such showmanship. M Ryan, did you have what were some stories you had by like getting getting the chance to be with with Alex? Yeah, so I definitely had to steal myself a little bit for the moment when he'd walk out, because like, I'd never met anybody famous before, and I really kind of still haven't that much. Um, I
don't know a small town. Yeah, that exciting all that stuff. Um, So I kind of had to, like, at least for the for the first game, I had to just kind of click my brain into he's just another trivia reader. You do this for fun, Like I had to click into that mode for a little bit just to like survive. Yeah. Yeah, but once, once we had the once I actually want and we had the moment to breathe and stuff, I could definitely see his personality coming
through, even in the limited amount of time. Uh, this is a story I tell people a lot, but it's because it's a good story. Um. I think it was after the second game that I want, So it was the Friday game, so it was there was less pressure to like move and every thing. Um. He asked me how old I was and I told him, no, I'm twenty one. And he looks me in the eye and he goes, I have clothes that are older than you.
It's so cool that you guys got to play with him. We'll talk a little bit more about the Tournament of Champions and what life's been like after Jeopardy post Jeopardy in our next little break. But it's time to get back to some trivia. Round three, Round three, the Lightning round. It is the lightning round. It is Sarah's in the lead, eleven to eight over Ryan. So, Ryan, you're gonna get to choose first in the Lightning round. You could choose today. Your categories are snap, crackle or pop.
That has nothing to do with anything. It's just something to choose from these three different questions. Snap, crackle or pop from Rice crispies, Ryan, name your poison. So I don't get to know exactly what No, not at all, but it's totally rando. It's totally random. We all know that I'm gonna pick the one that's like movies of Ben Still or Ben Stiller films. Oh God, all right, which one's given me good fives? Go Snap? It's gonna go snap. I hope I haven't made a
huge mistake. I've made a huge mistake. Um, we'll see how this goes. You might just destroy this one. We don't know. Um, and this is subjective so just it's better, you're gonna get twenty seconds on the clock, and it's better to just spout answers, just go nuts and then Sarah, you know you might want to jop stuff down if you can, because I'll come to you with your five second orbuttal right after Ryan's done, there's twenty seconds on the clock. I'm gonna say this question twice,
say go, and then hit the button. Here we go, per Hello music theory dot com. This is just from them. This is very subjective, but Hello music theory dot com. Who do they rank as the top nine jazz musicians of all time? The top nine jazz musicians of all time? Twenty seconds on the clock, Mister Bilcher and a go Davis, Coltrane, Marsalis, Armstrong, Monk Parker, Well Broach, Correa, Herbie Hancock. Um, who else plays jazz? Dizzy Gillespie, that's a jazz guy.
Um, Chick Corea is that guy? Dave Brubeck? Um? Stop impressive, Bilger Um. I'll have to check with Annie on this one. I think Ryan got one, two, three, four, five, You got at least six. He got seven? Um got Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, and I think you got one other one. We'll check with Annie to see if Marsalis you said you said Marsalis right, yes, So there are two that
you didn't get to. You got seven. That is very impressive in twenty seconds. Ryan Holy smokes. All right, Sarah Jet rayburn your five second rebuttal to see if you can come up with these other two. And Ago, I can only think of Clarence Frogman Henry, I doubt he's on there. I was hoping for Charlie Parker. Stop good guesses the two we didn't get to the King of All Sir Duke Duke Ellington, he was ranked number five. And then the first Lady of song Or I don't know if that's
her name, or the Lady of scatt is Ella Fitzgerald. Ella Fitzgerald is number seven. But that was excellent work there, mister Bilger. You got seven in that off the top of your head. So Sarah Jet, it's your turn in the barrel. You can pick crackle or pop for your question. It will not be Stiller movies nor jazz musicians, So those are out I'll take pop tick pop. All right, here we go, all right now. I am not condoning this next question at all. Should not partake
in this next question at all. Kids at home Via a twenty twenty Statista survey, I want to know the top nine US cigarette brands don't smoke. It's a horrible habit. But for this question, I need Sarah jet Rayburn to give me the top nine US cigarette brands. Twenty seconds on the clock and a Go Camel, Marlboro, Virginia Slim's Lucky Strike. Isn't it like a duke something that's not good? I smoke, h Charleston show. I don't know. I don't smoke. Um, I don't know. Uh and
stop. That's great that you don't smoke. That's good. That's a good thing. You got three. You got Marlborough, Camel and Virginia Slims. You got three out of the nine. They're six on the thing. Mister builder, you have a five second rebuttal to see if you can steal some five seconds and Ago Newport's skull in Copenhagen. Even I think the others, the last two are just dip. You're right, I don't know. I
don't know any other stop. It's just dip go dipping. I did that for like one one time and got sick and threw up and turned green. Um, you got Newport, You got those Newports. So it's three to one. And that one the ones we didn't get. Paul Malls. That's an old school cigarette, American Spirits. I've never heard of that. A lot of hipsters like that. There's a Native American on that one. And American Spirits cools with oh yeah spelled with a K. Those are pretty cool,
Winston. Smoking is not cool, kids. Smoking is not cool kids. This is terrible habit. Kids don't do it. Do not do it unless they sponsor the show. Then smoke a has looked like a chimney. The one I didn't know, but it's a pretty awesome name for a cigarette company is just called Basic Basic Cigarettes. It's I think they I think they're kind of like the cheap b maybe generic brand, but they're just called six. Uh So we'll tabulating on our scores right now. Oh my god,
we have our third lead change in three round. Sarah jet rayburn with fourteen and Ryan Bilger takes the lead with that jazz prowess sixteen, sixteen fourteen. After round three, can I ask what the crackle round was or are you planning to reuse? Um? I will reuse that. I will say as a geography round cigarette brands. There we have it. After round three, a very fun lightning round. We talked about jazz musicians and jazz cigarettes,
if you know what I mean. If you know what I mean, kids, Um it's sixteen fourteen, going into our final rob But before we get there, let's talk a little bit about the very special Tournament of Champions that you guys were a part of last year and kind of what's happened since then. So tell me a little bit about your time in the tournament last year
and kind of what's happened since then. Sarah, Okay, Well, I had the sort of unique privilege of losing in the first game, so I went to you know, so that meant it's it sounds strange that that would be a privilege. But once I lost in the very first game that we played, that meant I was a little bit more clear headed, and so
I got to watch the whole rest of the tournament. So you know, I was the only one who got to sit back after that first game, and well I kind of was watching that game too because Ryan was just getting everything, you know, zooming down the board. But after that I got to watch the whole thing. So that's so that that experience was great for me because imagine, you know, Jeopardy has been my favorite show my whole life. And then I get to sit there with like, you know,
in this studio, one of the very few people watching. So Ryan, what was your Tournament of Champions experience? Like, you made it to the semi finals and had a very close semi final game. Who did you Who did you play? Again? We know you played Sarah in the quarterfinal, but who did you play in that semifinal? Kevin and Veronica? Veronica the worst? Yes, the worst? Meanest Yeah, meanest person. Yeah,
those foster cat moms. Oh man, can't trust them both those the two of them are the like, two of the sweetest people I've ever met in my life. So yeah, what what what happened in your Tournament of Champs experience? In how is life changed for you in this this last year? Um? It was mostly pretty fun, um, except for learning that there was a second polio vaccine. After you've wagered five grand that you know, both polio vaccine inventors. Oh the questions you miss you will never forget.
Legitimately, it wasn't like, oh I forget the name. It was I didn't even know there was a second polio VECXI. Like it was that bad. What are you doing since uh, since the TC figuring out my life? Really getting into the permanent workhorse, um when the term That's another part of why the getting destroyed on the internet was so hard, Like it was to be honest, it was pretty traumatic and it's still kind of hurts a little bit. Yeah, how how old were you? How old were you?
Twenty three? It's again like you were on the show twenty one you do the tournament a champ with the twenty three and again you you beat a nineteen day champ the day before. People are needlessly vicious. I mean they don't and they just assume that they know everything about you from watching this short segment. You know, they oh, yeah, because you know he says, you know, I'm going for the kill like as you've explained Ryan,
to kill the game. Like yeah, it was still bad phrasing, Like that's the one thing though, Like, yeah, that's going to judge all twenty three years of your life because you say one word off handedly or whatever, and they had this impression that he was being you know, unsportsmanlike, which is just absolutely not true. I mean, not only was he not unsportsmanlike, you know, he went out of his way to be really nice and kind several times, including during the game, you know when I accidentally
drank the water and oh, yeah, you got us. I had my hand on the water, I drank. I drank the water too. I was not going to let you go down alone for that. I was like, oh no, I did it too. It's also a competitive game too, where it's like they want you to compete and they want you to like
have fun. And I would be offended if Ryan got up there and didn't try to win, you know, like you this one, Sarah, Yeah, you know, I mean you don't want to get up there and be patronized or you know, it would be weird if someone weren't trying to win in such a competitive atmosphere. Um, this is this is so great. It's so great to talk to you guys. We could talk more and more and more, but we still have to finish our game. This re between
Sarah Jets and Ryan Bilger. We have reached our fourth and final round for you two. Ryan's in the lead but at the slim lead sixteen to fourteen, and we are going into our fourth round, round four the Double Duty. There are nine questions in this round and points are doubled, so there are eighteen points up for grabs in this fourth and final round. Your category for your Theodore Double Duty Radcliff round today is First Ladies, First Ladies or
float uses first Ladies of the United States. Here we go with question one of nine. What first lady was the first to earn a graduate degree which was a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a high school teacher certificate from USC Southern California. First first lady to earn a graduate degree, which in this case was a Bachelor of Science as well as a high school teacher certificate
which sufficed for a graduate degree from USC. She was a Trojan Name her for question number one, and now for question number two, question number two, while her husband was Secretary of Commerce under Warren G. Harding and Silent cal Calvin Coolidge, what first lady was president of the Girl Scouts? Again for question number two? While her husband was Secretary of Commerce under Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. What first lady was president of the Girl Scouts.
I did not know this. To provide first names for our last names only sufficient. I will be very lenient if you get those first names, though even more impressive. But if you get the last names, I will give it to you. Moving on to question number three of the final round, I'm going to need both of these names to get the two points. Name the two first ladies that were both wives and mothers of US presidents. It's only been two, but you got to name them both the two first
ladies that were both wives and mothers of US residents. For question number three, Your Theodore double Duty Radcliff round points are doubled. Question number four a little bit different than question three. I don't need both, I just need one. Name either of the two first ladies that supposedly held seances in the White House to contact their dead children. Yikes, name either of the two first ladies that supposedly held seances in the White House to contact their dead children.
Don't need both, just need one or the other m for number four. Moving right along to question number five. Question number five, what first Lady one an Emmy. What first lady famously one an Emmy Award? For question five? Question number six, I did not know this one, but I find it fascinating. Who was the youngest first Lady at age twenty one and the only wife of a president to marry and give birth in the White
House? Once again, question number six, Who was the youngest first Lady at age twenty one and the only wife of a president to marry and give birth in the White House? Two thirds of the way through your double duty, Radcliff Round, it all comes down to these final three questions. Question number seven, what Chicago born first lady with the last name Bloomer studied dance under Martha Graham and performed at Carnegie Hall? Another one did not know this?
What Chicago born first lady with the last name Bloomer studied dance in New York City under Martha Graham and performed at Carnegie Hall? That flotus had some talent? Question number eight, Who was the first first lady to hold regular press conferences, write columns for newspapers and magazines, and host all radio show? What didn't she do? Once again? For question number eight, name the first first Lady to hold regular press conferences, write columns for newspapers and
magazines, and host her own radio show. For question number eight, and finally, question number nine, the final question between Ryan Bilger and Sarah jet Rayburn, here we go, What First Lady and Shadow Steward is a direct descendant of Pocahontas and has other genealogical links to Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee and the first First Lady Martha Washington? I will repeat that a game.
What First Lady and Shadow Steward is a direct descendant of Pocahontas and has other genealogical links to Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee, and the First First Lady Martha Washington? For your ninth and final question of the First Ladies Round, all right, pencils down, here we go. It all comes down to these nine questions and some deft guesses. I'm i'm I'm taking away from your faces from the double Duty Radcliff Round, which was for First Ladies
float uses. Here we go. Question number one, What First Lady was the first earner graduate degree which were a Bachelor of Science as well as a high school teacher certificate from USC or the University of Southern California. Sarah, what did you put for number one? Well? I don't know, but I put Pat Nixon only because Nixon's from California. That's the only reason. And I had a lot of other guests when I landed on So your guest was Pat Nixon. Ryan, what did you put for number one? I
also put it down Pat Nixon for the exact same reason. Oh that makes me feel better, Ryan, You guys, it is in fact Pat Nixon from number one? Well is my day a really thrilled with that one? You guys are a smart, deductive till number two on either question number two? While her husband was Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Coolidge, what first lady was president of the Girl Scouts, Ryan Bilger. My apologies to her that I cannot remember her first name, But by far the most famous secretary
of Commerce was Herbert Hoover. So it's missus hoover first name. I can't remember her. Okay, Sarah, what did you put? Um? I didn't put that. I put well, I put Edith Wilson. But I believe that Ryan is correct Edith Wilson. Yeah, and Hoover are great guesses. It is in fact Lou Hoover Lou, But I will be lenient this time because this was a tough round, So last names will Suffice not going to be a sum Lou Hoover. What a cool name, though, Lou
Hoover President of the Girl Scouts. Now we know. Question number three, Name the two first ladies that were both wives and mothers of US presidents, Miss Jet Abigail Adams and Barbara Bush. Ryan, do you agree with that assessment? I concur that would be Abigail Adams and Barbara Bush. We're both mothers and wives of US presidents. Question number four kind of in that same
vein didn't need to name both, but just one of them. Name either of the two first ladies that held seances in their White House in the White House to contact their dead children. Yikes, Ryan, what did you put for number four? Put on Mary Todd Lincoln because their son William Wallace Willie Lincoln died of type of fever in eighteen sixty two in the White House.
They also lost their son Edward Baker Eddie Lincoln before exactly when he died, but it was before President Willie's death was a big shaker for that day. Yeah, extra credit for dissertation. He went to Gettysburg College. Guys. I mean he's gonna know a couple of things about the Lincoln clan. Sarah jet Rayburn, what did you put? I also put Mary Todd Lincoln for the same reasons, but I didn't know all the names. I'll be intrigued to know who the other one is. Yeah, I mean too, Mary
Todd Lincoln and the other one. When I say, you'll probably go, oh, that's right, because I have heard he was a shell of a human being after his son passed away. His wife Jane Piers means Jane Appleton means yeah, yeah, Jane, I didn't know. And Franklin Pierce, Yeah, that's very interesting. I remember that they lost a child, but I didn't remember. I wouldn't have thought it out. Mary Todd seemed like a pretty safe Benny Pierce, Yeah, and they said that. Yeah.
After that, they were both just that was very, very tough for them, both Jane and Franklin Pierce for number four and Mary Todd Lincoln. Question number five. What first lady famously won an Emmy Award? Sarah maybe Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama Great Guest, Ryan Builder what did you put? So I was gonna say her, but I felt I think she might be the answer to a subsequent question, So I put down n answer the raid that was my first guest. And now I'm like, maybe he won an Emmy
for giving a tour of the White House. It was Jackie Ohanity. That answer deserves a spluche. It's an interesting thing for it like it was on like all the news channels covered it or one big news channels cover where it was like she gave a tour of the White House and it was the first time that a first lady had done that. Who was on television? And she won? YEA question number six an interesting question? Who was the youngest first lady at twenty one and the only wife of a president to marry and
give birth in the White House? Ryan, what did you put for number six? Francis wholesome Cleveland. Francis aolesome Cleveland. Sarah, what did you put for number six? No, Ryan sounds very confident. I put Edith Roosevelt. I know that has to be wrong because she's the second wife that
they had like forty two thousand children. She would have been really busy and Alice Alice Roosevelt though she was having seances and stuff too, and she buried like a voodoo doll out there, But she doesn't mean yeah, she's like a curse on the White House. Or I can't remember all the details because it was a project they did in high school. But Alice is something else.
However, that's just to distract you from the fact that I don't is great, This is all great, this is riveting podcasting folks at home. The correct answer he used two non consecutive terms. It was Grover's better half, Francis Folesome Cleveland. Um, yeah, Robin the cradle there, Grover good lord man. Yeah, there was a pretty financially difference. Well, that was question number six and it was Francis Foalsome Cleveland. We're up to
question number seven. What Chicago born first lady with the last name Bloomer studied dance under Martha Graham and performed at Carnegie Hall. Sarah, did you have a guest for number seven? Wow? I crossed out everybody. Let's see who did I put? You know what I mean? Michelle Obama's from Chicago, but I put Mamie Eisenhower because I would just like to see her dance. I think I want to see Mamie strut her stuff at Carnin. It sounds good. I don't know who it is. I like that. I
like that. Ryan, do you agree with Mamie Eisenhower. He's like, no, not at Unfortunately, her maiden name was dowd. Oh, that's right. I actually knew that time, so I don't know this cold. I went around like when was Martha Graham active? Also crossing off some names. Also, this president was from Missouri, so vegany midwestern. My answer is my answer is best Truman. I don't really have anything. I guess because he likes to play the piano from according to one photograph, these are
both great guesses. The correct answer is Betty Ford answer. I didn't know because I hear you hear like Chicago born, and there's like three or four like Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama and other people come to mind. You're like, ohh And then I was like, I did not know. That's good to know, you know, yeah, I feel like you might hear that at some point in trivia down the road. He definitely will. Now if we're writing the question but what for first lady, and we're like we know
it, know it? Yeah. In number eight, who is the first first lady to hold regular press conferences, right columns for newspapers and magazines and
host a radio show? Ryan, I don't know if I'm underthinking this, but since Franklin Roosevelt was very famously on the radio and the era seems right, and Eleanor Roosevelt was very visible and involved as first lady, she will be my answer here going with Eleanor Roosevelt the first lady of f d R. Do you agree with that or you have another answer, Sarah, No, I said Eleanor Roosevelt too, although I also worried that I was under
thinking it because you know, yes, Roosevelt. The correct answer is Eleanor Roosevelt. He did it all, She was everywhere. Gave yourselves two points for that one there, and it all comes down to this question number nine. It all comes down to this what first lady? And Shadow Steward is a direct descendant of Pocohannas and has other genealogical links to Thomas Jefferson, Robert Lee, and Martha Washington. Miss Raeburn. What did you put for number
nine? The Shadow Steward part is confusing me because I was thinking of Hillary Clinton, but I ended up putting Nancy Reagan because of the Shadow Steward. I wasn't sure what that meant. I will explain. Okay, your answer is Nancy Reagan. Yes, you put Nancy Reagan. Ryan, what did you put for number nine? Sound really stupid, It's wrong, But I feel like i've I feel like I've heard that the Robinson family of Michelle Obama has those links. You have Michelle Obama and Nancy Reagan, so two more
recent first ladies is um, I put Shadow Stewart in there. I was hoping that it would actually help someone, but I know there's more than one person that's been known has a Shadow Stewart. The one I was going for and the right answer is the one that kind of took over after her husband famously had a stroke, and Edith Wilson Woodrow Wilson's better Edith Wilson um is the one that is supposedly a descendant of Pocahontas. I did not guess that
about Edith Wilson's from me. I mean he's from well, he was born in Stanton, Virginia, So I guess that some nautic some degree sense. So we have a final score after the Theatre double Duty Radcliff round. First, ladies, it was a tough round, but the good thing was I feel like all three of us we all learned quite a bit of stuff that's gonna help us in our trivia stuff going forward. Uh. Sarah jet Rayburn with twenty two big points and Ryan Builder finishes it with twenty eight twenty eight
points. Ryan Bilger, you are the smartest person in the world for one week. As long as you don't ask me on any more Ben Stiller movies, then I will look like the dumbest person in the world for a week. That was a great That was a great comeback. You know, the Jazz round helped you out, and your presidential stuff helped you out. Sarah did very well in general Knowledge and the Ben Stiller round as well. And this is a victory because that's a lot closer than the score in the quarterfinal
game. So your rematch was a lot closer. There's some bragging rights there. What a wonderful time again, folks, we've been playing. I'm gonna reintroduce you to everyone here. We are playing with Sarah jet Rayburn and You can follow her on social media. She's on Twitter at at s jet Rayburn and on Instagram at Instagram at Sarah dot jet dot Rayburn. She's playing for
the March of Dimes. And we're also here with Ryan Bilger. You can follow him on Twitter at Ryan underscore Builder eleven at Ryan underscore Builder eleven. He is playing for the American battle Field Trust. We are going to make a donation to both of those charities from our players who were so lovely and excellent. But the game is not over. Oh no, it's not over.
We still have to do the final throwdown, the final throwdown. So this is where I get to go up against mister pants over here, Ryan Builder for a one off question and that our producer Annie is going to come up with, and she's going to share her screen here. Shortly, I will read the question. Ryan, you get first, dibbs. I can either agree with you or come up with my own answer, and then we'll learn a little bit about the final answer. Here we go, Which woman
was the chief architect behind Hurst Castle? Which woman was the chief architect behind Hurst Castle? Zana do if you will of the whole Citizen Kane film? Which woman was the chief architect behind the Hurst Castle. Of the question, Ryan is thinking, so am I because I should know this, but I don't. I can't remember her name. I've absolutely read about it, and let me know when you have a guest, Ryan, take your time.
There's one other woman architect who's clogged, clogging up my brain space right now, and another woman who has a similar name but is not this person. There's no real to be quite, I can put this out there. It's not Deniece Scott Brown, who is a more modern architect worked with him, if she's married to Robert Venturi, or it's worked with him and Julia Margaret Cameron was a photographer. But I feel like this woman's name is similar someone
to can't Julie more Conflue. For some reason, I want to say Morgan. I think that's wrong, but it's what I'm gonna say. I'm gonna say her last name was Morgan. I have nary a clue. I have no clue. I can't even think of a last name that is going to make any sense. I'm going to call an audible as well and be like, Sarah, do you have a guess? I honestly don't know. I don't know. I was actually question feeling relieved that I didn't have to answer
this. It's a great question. I'm gonna say, I'm gonna make up a name. I'll take a name from the movie Fletch, and I will just say the last name is Cocktoasting. All right, So Ryan's got a guess, Morgan, I'm gonna say John cock Toast, you know. And here comes our answer. We're gonna learn a little bout answer here, and we're never going to forget this woman for as long as we yes. Let's go, come on, builder, Builder is one smart, badass. It
is Julia Morgan. That answer deserves a huzzah Julia Morgan. And let's learn a little bit about Julia Morgan. She was the first licensed female architect in all of California. She spent twenty eight years collaborating with William Randolph Hurst on the Castle's design twenty eight years. Over her forty six year career, she designed seven hundred plus buildings, and she was the first woman to be awarded
the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. Julia Morgan. So, if you hear any questions about architecture and women, Julia Morgan should be on your shortlist. What a great pull, mister Bilger, you are the smartest person in the world. For one more than one week, I would think. Want to help out the podcast, please subscribe to You Should Know Better.
