Episode description

July 6, 1986. Owensboro, Kentucky. 16-year old Shannon Green disappears after leaving her residence to visit a family friend. Days later, Shannon’s mother receives a phone call from someone calling himself “Dewayne”, who claims that he and Shannon ran away together to get married. Shortly thereafter, an 18-year old acquaintance of Shannon’s named David Dewayne Bell also goes missing. A man named John Reneer eventually provides the authorities with a tape of a recording in which Dewayne seemingly confesses to murder. Allegations surface that Dewayne killed Shannon and his father helped him cover the whole up, but if so, what actually happened to Dewayne? Could someone have been responsible for the disappearances of both victims? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a convoluted saga involving two unsolved missing persons cases from the same town and their alleged connection to each other.
