Most traders will use an indictor with zero idea of how it works or what it actually measures. They'll just plug it in & look for it to be a saving grace for there trading. The truth is that an indicator is a tool & like any tool, it's important that you pick the right one for the specific job at hand & that will mean changing the settings so that it provides you with the specific signal that you desire.
