Hello and welcome to the tennis podcast live from New York City from tennis podcast towers to be precise. I'm Catherine Whitaker. This is Matt Roberts. This is David Law. We've had a lovely morning in New York, haven't we?
Yes, we have. For the first time, we haven't been to Flushing Meadows and much as I love going to Flushing Meadows, yesterday, we were without a train that worked. So we had to do the roundabout method. We got there. But today, because we've got the live show this afternoon and there's not so much going on there, we've had a lovely leisurely time. Matt went to the gym. I did. Yeah, I won't be telling you much about that, but it was fine. What happened in there?
It was fine. I did my exercises and got the hat out of there because I feel very self-conscious in the gym. Yeah, yeah. The only thing worse is staying in a place with tennis players and going to the gym and running the tennis player gauntlet. A little treat for those of you that are joining us live on YouTube, you've probably clocked it by now, Matt and I wearing matching t-shirts. Yes, and they say Wimbledon on them. Because we love our Wimbledon merch.
Because most of our wardrobe is Wimbledon merch at this point. I don't know what I used to wear. Used to wear Wilson merch. That's true. I've set you up there to tell a story if you'd like to. Up to you. Yes, I didn't tell people about the gym, so I feel like I do owe the people a story. That is on the flight over. The flight attendant was just clearing away some rubbish and came over to me and said, Oh, I used sponsored by Wilson. Because he was in head to toe Wilson to be clear here.
And I said, once upon a time, all true, and she said, do you still play? Matt was mistaken for a retired tennis player on the flight over. Yes, this moment of his life. Yeah, trip highlight and wasn't even in New York yet. And then she proceeded to talk for about five minutes about her own game. It was really Justin in for to talk about herself. It's been a lovely morning in New York and it's a very welcome kind of calm before the storm.
Because we're going to be plunged straight into it tomorrow morning 11 a.m. And it's a move against Shung Chim when Matt's probably going to be in his seat at about 1015. Just just to make sure. Yeah, no, it's very much going to be a hit the ground running situation tomorrow. David's on Britwatch with Jan Choynski. Yeah, I'll be learning a lot about him tonight. I know that he beat Maxine Cressy, which is feels like a certain turning point in my former fandom.
Yeah, tough time to be a fan of Maxine Cressy, I would say, because he didn't handle that defeat well. I don't know if you saw that. That went viral, yeah. Yeah, he was shown sitting on his chair just taking things out of his bag and rubbish basically and just tossing it around like a child's throwing a tantrum. And I haven't heard it whether he's explained himself or apologize yet, but it was absolutely appalling. And he also lost a six-love set.
And now a guy loses his serve three times for that serve. I do not know, but anyway. You should not be getting broken three times in a set by Jan Choynski. No. That much I do know about Jan Choynski. But well done Jan, in the main draw. And if you want to listen to what goes on with him, five-life sports extra tomorrow and I'll be there. The big sell. Yeah, you'll find out how David's been spending his evening for all sorts of Jan Choynski stats. Correct. Yeah. Yeah, okay.
Well, look, the Order of Play for Tomorrow and in fact, for Tuesday as well, they've released both orders of play nice and early. But those are going to be a topic of conversation today. We also have some questions that have already come in. And I invite you, if you are here live on YouTube, to send your questions into the chat. I'm keeping an eye on things there. I might miss the odd one, but I'm keeping an eye on things.
And we welcome your questions and we're trying to answer as many as possible, specifically about the US Open. I should add. That is the scope of today's show. We have, as I said, had a couple already in from the barge and maybe we'll kick off with those. But before I do that, of course, I have to tell everyone about AO Travel in Experiences. Because, as you probably know by now, the tennis podcast throughout this US Open is brought to you in partnership with AO Travel in Experiences.
Your, can we do a chorus of this? One stop shot for the Australian Open. We'll finesse that for future days. AO Travel in Experiences is your ticket to the best hospitality. The AO has to offer. There is an extensive range of unique hospitality packages designed to delight fans with curated, end-to-end premium experiences that offer world-class hospitality and unparalleled tennis viewing over the course of an entire day or evening. Don't miss out on the curated menu at Riverside Social.
Sounds fantastic. An ultra-stylish rooftop cocktail bar with unparalleled views of Melbourne's Skydine while enjoying the best that tennis has to offer at the Australian Open. For anybody new to this podcast, I bloom in love with rooftop bar. It's my absolute favourite thing. And that's into cocktails. If there is a fruity cocktail on a menu, Matt Roberts is ordering it. In fact, did our live show the other night, Matt got shut down trying to order a fruity cocktail. That's right.
Yeah, they said we only have beer and wine. So I was disappointed on my approach back to the greenery. No sex on the beach for Matt. The Australian Open 2025 Travel and hospitality packages are on sale now. To book your package today, visit osopentravel.com. That's osausopentravel.com plus if you use the code TP Upgrade at checkout, you'll be entered into a draw for an amazing upgrade to your trip. That's TP Upgrade at checkout. And we'll pop those details in the newsletter as always.
Now, questions coming in in the chat. Lovely stuff. Hannah is in there. Hello, Hannah. Sterling work as always. Hannah does recaps of every podcast on the barge. And those are my favourite thing every day, over slam. We can't wait to read them on a daily basis, because we don't know what's coming. Obviously, we know what we've said, but getting Hannah's verdict on what we've said is... But invariably better than what we've actually said.
So get yourself on the barge if you fancy checking that out and our friend of the tennis podcast. And if you want to become a friend, as always, the link is in our show notes now. I'm actually going to do a double header here for our first question. Are we ready for that? Yes. Because I think these questions that have come in entirely independently, both on the barge. I think they're very, very related. So the first question is from Dammy.
Dammy asks, do all 128 players on both tours get to do a press conference at the slams? I can imagine it'll be a lot of work for the journalists and the organisers, but I've just noticed that we mostly only get to see press conferences from the big names on YouTube. Wondering if maybe David can talk a bit about how the tours and journalists decide who they want to hear from during these big events. Now the next question, great question by the way, Dammy.
The next question, also great, is from Swarner. And Swarner asks, and this is as a result of hearing something on Ben Rothenberg and Tomini Carrioles, podcast, no challenges remaining. They were commenting that fewer and fewer journalists are travelling to tennis events and press conference rooms are feeling noticeably emptier at Grand Slams. And Swarner asks, have we observed the same? And if this train continues, what is the future of tennis journalism? Wow, big subjects.
But a very important one and one that we wrestle with all the time as we try to sort of gauge how best to cultivate our coverage. Obviously we've made it so that we come on site to all of the four Grand Stantonoments. And we're staying at each one of them increasingly for nearly three weeks. Big investment for us, but one we feel that is very much worth it. And we hope that you feel that too as listeners and viewers and consumers of what we produce.
But it is important, therefore, that there is value in us coming on site, because there are certain people that these days just cover the event from home. And you can do it. You can just sit at home and watch the TV and lap up the official interviews or the TV broadcast interviews. You could do a conversation from home or write your articles or whatever it is your medium is. But we feel that you lose texture, you lose colour, you lose feel.
All the things that we hope that we bring here on the tennis podcast. And increasingly it has become more difficult to justify for a lot of media to spend what is an absolute fortune here in New York in particular to make those journeys. And to cover it in the way that we are covering it. Listen, we have no intention of doing anything other than what we're doing right now. But what does happen is the tournaments have what they call a media day.
Increasingly it's a media weekend where over the course of two days a certain number of players will be brought in for a general press conference. So it's the ones that you see in an auditorium. We join those typically and they're mic'd up increasingly they have a camera on those of us that are asking questions as well, which is a bit chasing at times.
And I feel like is a bit questionable really given you know it doesn't feel like anybody's asked permission of the journalists if they mind being on camera. It's just one of those if you want accreditation expect to be on camera. And another frustration of the media is that then those press conferences are immediately put on the official tournament website. So you're kind of doing their work for them. Now our viewers always been well we want to contribute to what is being produced out there.
We want everybody to we're not sort of just trying to guard our work and keep it only for our listeners or viewers. We're happy to be part of that process and we benefit as well when we're not at a press conference or when somebody asks a great question and we get to talk about it or or use it. So not a great problem for us. But the reason that so many players don't do them I think is because the selection is is kind of just unilateral by the tours and the tournaments.
They're not consulting with the journalists as to who they put up they're trying to guess. They're which is fine as long as all the right people get get made available. And once in a while and that has happened a couple of times this week and in recent grand sums that doesn't happen. And it's certainly something that I'm looking into taking up with the tours and the authorities to try to find maybe a better way.
But in the absence of them putting those players in front of us all we then put in requests and each one of the media outlets do that and what you don't see necessarily after a press conference or sometimes before it is what's called a sort of media garden which is where we sometimes record our shows here at the US Open. And that's dozens of TV crews that are rights holders some of them are non rights holders who are all doing one to one interview.
So Yannick Center to give an example he obviously did his press conference the other day we detailed how they they did try to stop the big story questioning after one question. Unfortunately that didn't happen but after he'd done his 10 minute press conference he then went out to that media garden. And he must I saw him huddled around 8 10 TV crews just going and doing three questions with each one.
And so really it becomes a selective process from requests from journalists and it does mean that a lot of players you don't hear from and it is a balancing act because we have seen once in a while a player turn up into press comments and no journalists were there and those are horrible situations. And it's certainly something when the players available we try to attend because we want to be part of those conversations and helping generate answers that are out there.
Yeah I mean I think we're actually at a real crisis point here and I don't think the tools particularly the ATP tour I would have to say I do think there's some complacency there. I don't think they really realize how much of a crisis point right and I don't think there's enough valuing of written press and I include in that podcasts online media people that attend press conferences I think there's too much short sightedness in terms of TV being the ones that pay direct money for access.
There's a very clear transaction there and therefore TV get get prioritized I think and other things get prioritized whereas press on paying explicitly for their access I don't think there's enough appreciation of how much of a co dependent ecosystem that is and they should be incentivizing and encouraging the people that attend those press conferences to be there.
And I think that gap is widening at the moment is getting more expensive to be there and they're giving less incentive to be there and that is horrendous really and it worries me greatly I still think even if they were offering more and offering decent incentive I still think there would be a drop off just because the pandemic has changed things.
I think editors and production managers have seen that it's possible to do things remotely and it costs a lot less and it's quite difficult to express the value of being there in a spreadsheet of costs and and value is quite difficult to make that value palpable to a bean counter.
So I still think there would be some water for crisis but the fact that that crisis isn't being responded to with greater greater access and incentives particularly by the 80 PM I view is is really really problematic and worrying we've had a question here from shivvy picking up on the fact that Daniel mevadaf hasn't come to pre tournament press for two slams in a row now.
Now we've queried this to because my understanding was the top players and certainly a top five player who's a former champion here and a finalist last year the top players are are brought to press without having to be requested and we've assumed that that would be the case with mevadaf and two slams in a row he hasn't shown up and we've we've queried it and been told he wasn't requested.
And there does seem to have been a shift in how it's determined which players come to pre tournament price a shift that I don't quite understand is certainly the journalists aren't consulted about what would be a good idea. If you're the 80 p why you're not desperately pushing Daniel mevadaf to come to a press conference is is beyond me I mean if your job is to promote the sport.
Put Daniel mevada get Daniel mevadaf talking yeah he was really possible to as many people as possible people who listen to him talk about tennis or frankly talk about anything enjoy themselves and therefore are drawn to the sport.
And just on I think one of the attitudes that has become increasingly prevalent is well we've done an interview with the player I the tour TV crew or the tournament you can have that or they put that out there and that's regarded as the interview sometimes and that is not the same and and never more obvious as in the case of Yannick Sinner the other day because.
If the media just gone along with what they were being instructed to do I stop asking questions about about Yannick Sinner's positive test and subsequent kind of not clearance but but the fact that he was not found to not be at fault himself had that stopped after one question you would have got a complete set of different truths almost from from from the situation and.
And as a result of it coming on a proper conversation and a proper grilling took place and he handled himself brilliantly as as we talked about it so it did him a favor rather than just trotting out answers that nobody's interested in because they're just not relevant and I think that there is the value of journalism right there because a tournament interview or a tour interview is not going to be journalistic it just isn't.
And the phrase you said Catherine about you know if your job is to promote the sport you you put Daniel mebodev in in front of the media of course you do I think sometimes the people in those positions who are determining who comes to press maybe are less interested in promoting the sport and more interested in maybe protecting the players or protecting their relationship with players as well like that is. That is something that we sort of come up against to be.
We also had a frustrating situation with Elena Rebecca this week where she she's also very much in our minds a top player who we just assume will be coming to the pre to one of impressed conference but they kind of release the list of who's going to who's going to be coming and then that this seems to be you know pretty much final.
But then some big news about Rebecca and her coach comes out and there's kind of an inflexible system about you know like now that is a major story that people are going to be wanting to talk about and there's doesn't seem to be a very good mechanism in place for sort of pivoting at the last minute and realizing well that's a big story we need to be allowing journalists to speak to Rebecca so yeah there's a lot of.
Restressions I think and as you said it doesn't feel like it's getting better it in fact the opposite there are some good people that work at the tours absolutely we deal with who who absolutely you know we speak to them as make suggestions and they sometimes make suggestions to us and and you know that it's a having done it is a thankless task at times to be in the middle of the players and the journalists but there are some very good people within the tours and I want to.
Make it seem that there aren't and but there are also things that could be done better and that's ultimately all we should all and it's structure on procedural isn't it ultimately rather than about individuals I just don't yeah yeah I could talk all day about this and in fact we have got another question which is. Which leads us on some quite similar territory and and beyond but Joseph fell has asked about Jack Draper in our.
Responses to what he's had to say yesterday about the aftermath of the incident in Cincinnati on that on that match point that we covered a few podcasts ago now David you were in Jack draper's press conference yesterday we talked about elements of that on the show but.
You weren't able we weren't able to talk about the entirety of that press conference until today because of a quirky journalistic thing yeah I mean in short what does sometimes happen with these these media gatherings is and this happens a lot in Britain I think in particular that assembled media conference was only British journalists really and they. And he desperately needed something that they could write about today as opposed to yesterday and there wasn't an obvious.
Choice for today so rather than just putting out everything Jack draper said yesterday and then kind of having nothing new for today they they made an agreement that they would save it for today and we as the tennis podcast decided we'll we'll go along with that as well because.
It's it's kind of a team game in some ways that the way the media works and and also it's good for us we get to talk to you about it today so we just wanted to explain how that works and actually in just in terms of what was said by Jack draper I found it's such a fascinating conference because and again an example just like sinner of the value of just letting the player talk that player Jack draper seemed like he was desperate to unload his.
His story for us all so that people weren't guessing and that's the problem so often you get you get people having to just guess because there's a vacuum of information and obviously in his case you play this match there's this big big conversation on the court then there's the replay showing what I think certainly I and many people thought was an incorrect call Jack draper is getting told left front center that he's a cheat and that he's dishonest and that he's a lot of.
He's a liar that he that he did know that it was an incorrect shot and and then he's left the quarters the winner and then he lost in the subsequent round and and we're still I mean I maybe did do press conferences that I didn't see at the time but I was just left guessing as to was he was he being honest was he being dishonest was he how is he was he affected in his next match by what had what had come out and all the things that were being said.
And he just spilled his heart out to us all about what had gone on for the next few days and how sad and upset and hurt he felt about the things that were being said about him he said I couldn't of course I knew what was being said he didn't name the person but he said you know I know somebody a famous former player and he was referring to Andy Rodeck here had said that if you.
Stubba ball into the ground he said I've never stopped the ball into the ground and not known that I've done it and he didn't criticize Jack draper for that but he he said it's perfectly legitimate to do so but he was basically saying he might he would have known because I've always known and draper was absolutely catagoric that he just didn't know he said maybe he maybe and he he wasn't angry at Rodic he wasn't.
He wasn't criticizing him and he said I don't know if I saw it how I would react either but I can tell you honestly maybe he's never had a ball quite like the one I had there is a slight logic fail in I've always known isn't that because you don't know about the ones you don't know yes I suppose that's true yeah but as you say video replay will tell you yeah but you could see the hurt in draper's eyes and like I said he wasn't angry at Rodic he wasn't criticizing him he wasn't criticizing any of the.
He wasn't criticizing any of the people that had kind of criticized him but he was telling us how much it had affected him he said for four straight days it's all he could think about and clearly it had absolutely affected is a performance in the next match I think he is that kind of guy that is I do think it's quite similar in terms okay not the severity is way more importance with sinner but I do see parallels of these two guys that have been.
Just don't want to be those players involved in these commotions and being having their integrity question having their honesty question he said I've always regarded myself as an honest person and I and I really believe that that that's absolutely what I am and I but I can't convince you of that because you've seen the video so you know what you've seen him and I know now that I've seen it it was absolutely a foul shot
but I didn't know at the time and everybody's telling me that I did know and I didn't and it really bothered him and I really felt for him actually in that moment and I believe him too I believe him. It always used to be just an accepted thing that when a batsman nicks it in cricket they knew you always know but then Snicko got introduced and turned out that actually there are incidents where
you don't know. I reckon I reckon about 15% of our audience understood that reference but that 15% but I've really enjoyed it. But it was it was really fascinating to get an insight into his character I mean and off the back of the the coaching news that he's no longer going to work with Wayne for
a while and which he's going through a lot isn't it? I really do question there I and listen you know I wish Jack Draper a lot of luck I've got a lot of time for him I'm not sure that that decision is going to lead to the progression that he was after I think he does need something else so we'll see. Do you think he's in trouble here in the first round with everything that's going on?
He's a very dangerous capable player feels feels pretty 50 50 to me and he hasn't got an amazing slam record Jack Draper you know he's. No well there has been all here yes absolutely but you know it's it's not like he's going into this okay off the off the back of some difficult moments in his career but he can fall back on well I know that I do well at
slams and all that kind of thing like he's still kind of waiting for that slam breakthrough really and he did say didn't the end of his answer yesterday Jack Draper that like kind of as hard as it's been for him and he's you know he's found the criticism really tough and having his kind of integrity
question like he knows that actually could be a good moment for the sport that like that's happened and hopefully will accelerate video technology being brought in everywhere where possible so you know he's he's got a pretty mature perspective on it as well I think he also said it might end up being good for me to kind of to have been exposed to something that's really not nice but that I've got to get used to and and actually he's got a good
quality and actually he gave some some great color on Andy Murray in the conference he was asked you know how do you how he felt about Murray not being around anymore and so forth and what the differences he said it's really strange because he would always sit next to me in the locker room and I'd have his stinky rancid shoes next to me and he was teasing him and saying
missy and the Murray was and you know he said for somebody who's as diligent as he is and ever absolutely perfectionist but his stuff was everywhere and I'd be kind of like trying to move it back a little bit just so that I had a bit of space in the locker room but he clearly misses him immensely and and feels
some pride feels some responsibility to carry the the flag really in men's tennis now and in Andy's absence you can see he's desperate to be all the things that that everybody else wants him to be he's he's as determined as as they are it's whether
he can kind of figure it out and crack it I think he's definitely a young man with a sense of responsibilities and he so many young men apologies to any young men out there just feel so like lawless and only responsible to themselves and he's he's not like that at all and I've got a lot of time for him I really do but I am a bit worried about him against Jun Jun Gen.

asked mint mobile legal team big wireless companies are allowed to raise prices due to inflation they said yes and then when I asked if raising prices technically violates those onerous to your contracts they said what the f**k are you talking about you insane Hollywood
s**t so to recap we're cutting the price of mint unlimited from thirty dollars a month to just fifteen dollars a month give it a try at mint mobile dot com slash switch forty five dollars a month for three months plus taxes and fees from all week for new customers for limited time and limited more than forty gigabytes per month so it's full terms at mint mobile dot com few other really good questions coming in and I'm going to I'm going to start going through the order of play tomorrow and
then when a question becomes relevant I'm going to offshoot into that we happy that's fun we happy with that procedure okay I mean some eyebrow raising choices I think in the order of play okay so ash starts at midday two day session matches two night session we start with Ben Shelton against Dominic team I'd have put it at night but in fact I'd have put out of swap the ash
yeah absolutely so day session is Shelton against team followed by a vavarig or chave against cocoa golf in the night session and of course it's before the night session that they do their kind of opening ceremony here isn't it it's Clara Barale against Sloan Stevens and then Radihalbot against no about jock of itch now I would say jock of itch here he's probably asked for night session and he's getting it because he's no about jock of itch and
fine fair enough it's that's not a match I'm particularly interested in well done Radihalbot for qualifying but it's like a homecoming isn't it it's like hey everybody look at my yeah I'm not expecting great competitiveness there Sloan Stevens against Clara Barale in the slot of the day is a big surprise to me I know she's a former champion I love
Sloan Stevens I love watching her that is a big surprise to me to the extent that I made some inquiries about whether we should be expecting an announcement from Sloan Stevens about a retirement and if that is the case it's been kept very well under wraps because I haven't
spoken to anybody that's heard anything but I still wouldn't rule it out because I do think that's curious scheduling yeah I get given the other matches available to go in that slot cocoa golf defending champion yeah I can understand the jock of itch one more obviously for the reasons you
mentioned about he he no doubt would have would have wanted that but also he is just he's become a show in himself now for crowds but not that Ben Shelton hasn't but jock of itch is record is so incredible now and the greatness but for the defending champion
cocoa got who still feels like the biggest star at this tournament not to be opening night session that feels a bit like a missed opportunity yeah which and it seems like everybody would want that really which again makes me think maybe there's something else going on here but that is merely a totally unsubstantiated Catherine Whittaker conspiracy theory at those in my favorite stage I should stress that over on the Lewis Armstrong stadium or Louis Armstrong stadium apparently we
established last year that both are correct right yeah depends on your feet too yeah we'll interchange it we start with Jun Chen Wen against Amanda and I some over and I I use we quite literally there and then and that's always I think an interesting slot for a big C to be in like the 11 a.m. slot first up you know I think it's not it's not vibe town is it it's not no I think you know grant grounds pass holders can can get on to
Armstrong so I suspect it will be very busy but like Jun Chen Wen obviously coming in off off the Olympic gold medal and an Australian open final this year like I think in her own mind she will consider herself absolutely capable of winning this title and then she's up against one of the kind of in form players of the summer the home favorite and this and over like that is a that's a belting round one match and I just think that that slot to me is not ideal for this one you know first
up like I just think that you know that could have even been night session on on ash quite frankly yeah or night session on Armstrong I agree I mean you get a match like that a match like that coming out to the draw and round one is a gift isn't it give it the best chance it can have to be good that's the way I feel about those on paper good matches second up on Armstrong is Taylor Fritz against a man who I've had to click on to establish his first name Camilo Hugo Carabelli
he's Argentine he's 92 in the world there we go and third on his Madison keys against Serena Ciniacover a night session on Armstrong is Alex cover Chevich against Francis Tiafo who incidentally I've spent my morning wandering around New York City Francis Tiafo is everywhere he is the most ubiquitous tennis player in terms of billboards and branding and so on which is a surprise to me it's largely down to a very omnipresent
Evian campaign yeah that's often the way isn't it but still I was expecting Coco Gough to be the one that's everywhere if it had been 12 months ago I might have been expecting it to be Francis Tiafo but I don't remember being smatched in the face by Francis Tiafo last year don't clip that where is I do feel like that's been the case today yeah yeah it's it's that's interesting and and well as you know I'm I'm going big on Francis Tiafo this year
I'm hoping it doesn't end up like Andy Roddick in 2005 when they released the Mojo advert over here I don't know how many of you remember that you two weren't because you weren't here but American Express did a big campaign with Andy Roddick about and he's lost his Mojo as though it was a physical thing and him him looking for it what brand is this American Express and and eventually he he found it
apparently and was ready for the US Open and he promptly lost in straight sets to Jill Smuller in the first round as one of the tournament favorites certainly the biggest name in the draw I mean Federer was maybe the favorite but but Roddick was the big story as you know a world number one or Hannah remembers it David she said oh God the Mojo advert so maybe they went transatlantic yeah so that happened I really really really urgently want to look those up
yes they were terrible advert and I think I mean you know I'm sure he he would laugh but it all very much now Hannah says I just got such a wave of naughty cringe yes but yeah I remember I remember Roddick departing the courts with he had one of those banks where had just a single big strap that you could put over your shoulder which released his arms free and I remember him just clasping his hands behind his head as he walked off the court with his bag
over his shoulder having lost in three very tight sets to a big serving shield muller wonder where his Mojo was and just being devastated and and the thing is the ad kept running for the next two days oh that's a catastrophe isn't it yeah that's like the the Renault advert with Luke of Anash in it that was running throughout the French open so I'm kind of look like I say I'm going big on Francis Tienfeu
we haven't actually done the predictions yet well one of the questions here David just to bring in questions as I as I promise to it was from Megan quite a while ago at the start of the show who said whose presser made you a rationally optimistic
about their prospects at the US Open I thought David's going to say Francis Tienfeu he will read it he rationally optimistic I was and then he fueled it it's either Tienfeu or Crachika but he definitely wins that one see I love to Crachika's press conference but it didn't
necessarily make me optimistic about her prospects yeah I just think the draw is an issue for Tienfeu in terms of getting really optimistic because what you're saying if you're really optimistic about Francis Tienfeu is that he's convinced he's most likely going to beat no about Jacović
otherwise he's losing in the fourth round I like that's probably a good run for Francis Tienfeu but like it's not not setting the world on fire is it so I'm wondering whether whether he has convinced you that he's going to beat presumably no about Jacović
that's the face of a man who realizes he's backed into a corner you'll have to wait and see right now on the newsletter predictions come out Matt Fatterman was pouring some cold water on your table I mean he was deeply scornful in the most I mean look he loves to have some
Timberman has never boarded a hype train in his life and I think he would have made it two rational and reasonable I gave it a good sell in the corridor to him and he just looked a bit perplexed I mean you know and nothing against Tienfeu
he obviously rates him and likes him but yeah I don't think I think he sees things a little more soberly and sensibly than I do you may be surprised to hear Hannah's this is another deviation from the order of play but Hannah's coming with a question that I would like to drop everything to answer
she says she asks best tennis advert ever oh dear this is one of those name a tennis player moments I mean it's funny when we were doing this the supersaturday show and ended up watching the Andean the André Agassi Pete Samperous set point from the 1995 US Open final which was just
if you haven't seen it go and look it up immediately or after the show it's effectively two players two players like I said after the show two players hurling their very best shots at each other which you know point ending shots answered with point ending shots
that don't end the points that's that's the best work and describe the rally and shortly after that Nike produced a an ad with the two of them recreating that rally but while they did it aging growing beards growing old still playing the rally in different season it's must have been early days CGI
it was really good I'm sure there's another one that I think is better than that but I can't remember what it is so maybe it'll come to me well I mean that does sound great I like the really crap ones with the wooden acting Yennexin has done a elevator advert which is dreadful
isn't there like a Nadal Hamon one which is quite amusing there is yeah wood he's not a great actor Nadal is he bless him and late in here it was the toilet paper advert in Australia didn't he I did not know yeah I believe so if we've got New Australians with this live please
please let me know but I'm pretty sure that's the case but I put forward a motion to start a barged thread on tennis adverts and we will come back to this as we resume with the order of play if I can just find the right tab in my browser the final match on
Armstrong after cover chavich against TFO is Priscilla Hahn against Arrina Sabanenka we last saw Priscilla Hahn at Wimbledon qualifying not playing no after Amanda and I some overheads had lost their great friends aren't they or they were until
the immediate aftermath of that loss I think things are okay now but it was a slightly tough scene wasn't it over on grandstand is verov kicks things off he was supposed to play a meal with a worry a worries out injured incomes lucky loser maximilian martyre of Germany next up
is formally of the backhand this Victoria Goliubich against Paola Badossa yeah I thought he might be yeah well for both players obviously for the backhand but also I think genuinely very curious about Badossa at the moment I think her tennis this summer has been superb and I think in each individual
match I'm kind of expecting her to keep playing well it is feels like the big question given what we know she's going through with her back and you know she's talked about having injections before matches and just as these matches accumulate you will certainly keep kind of expecting
the level to drop but when she's playing well at the moment she's really does seem to be back to somewhere close to her best and I think she's in a section of the draw I believe it's the Coco Gough section and Cretica as well like it feels like there's maybe an opportunity there if she can stay fit but yeah like just having to sort of reprogram my mind a bit to to realise that yes Badossa is actually playing really well again which we haven't been able to say for a couple of years or so.
We have Matt I think it is on the chat confirming that Lane here it did indeed do an advert for Sorbonne to toilet paper in Australia there we go someone dig it out and send me the link Grandstand so Goli Bic Badossa second on then get more fees against Diego Schwartzman champion
of course a beauty S La Monf Big and now is a nice moment Diego Schwartzman qualifying it was I think we've talked about that but he you know we know he's retiring next year I guess he'll try and play the Australian Open if he can if he can get into it but this may very well be his last
Grand Slam tournament and he qualified and he said that he felt like he'd reached the second week just because of how how emotionally he was and the fact that he hasn't won that many matches recently and he was hoping for a match on a big court against a big name and I think you know
Grandstand against Monf is kind of fits that that'll be fine I think Grandstand is a Victoria as a RENKER the 20th seed this year against Ulias Starradobt Sava the Ukrainian player as a RENKER apparently being coached by Greg Rizewski Interesting Not something I saw coming No, me neither
but he knows the thing is who about serves and she needs to improve a serve so maybe that's that He's quite late in the career to play the Greg card isn't it Where's the right I just I mean I assume you had an alternative but no, there's no alternative I mean look, I got wish and I'm like
I am fighting this time, I am fighting this time I'm fighting this time, tonight You know, well you say went the right time but weirdly it was so on our at our desks in the media center you know we have a big screen which has lots of information available you click on a player and you get their bio
new for this Australian open it within the bio is a section which tells you what and when the fastest ever serve hit by each player was Was the rank as was last year the serve she didn't find on serve peaking Speed though you know we can get more accurate
Okay, well yeah wishing him luck, wishing him luck By the way we had such fun playing the game of whose fastest serve Yeah we played the prizes for about an hour with the serve speeds David was on a roll I think it might have been Rousseau-Vorey right His fastest serve was like over 140
Yeah wild, who knew And Gamel and Fees had got 146 from somewhere Yeah and I was trying to, I was saying that well surely Alexander's Verives had a faster one than Gamel and Fees and it turned out no It's a fun game folks, very fun game
The first serve and team is where you find Maria Sacri, Kasper, Rude, Tomorrow, Taylor Towns, Endagons, Martina, Travisa and that could be fun Yes And low key An incredibly hard first round here She hadn't quite processed that this was the first round match when the draw came out
Hagaruna has got Brandon Nakashima Yeah, he's played a lot of matches this summer One of the most close matches so Rue and a bet of the onits That was a question we had in Apologies I didn't note down who the question was from But a while ago someone asked Are we on an Opsetalert for Rue and I think
Yeah I think you have to be I think so and actually the seeds on this court Sacri, look we're always on Opsetalert Whether it even is Opsetalert anymore Her grand sam record in recent years is so poor Kasper Rude has had a rough Couple of months in terms of results and
Okay, he's playing a qualifier but that qualifier looked beat Karat 7 born a Goya in qualifying And then as you said Hagaruna against Nakashima That could be a bit of a wild day on court 17 potentially What have had Danish media colleagues who we always now have seen to end up chatting to
Having worked a little closely with them at the French Open to understand A little bit more about Hagaruna David is his go to for Runa takes He lines me up when he wants just some wild prediction I don't know why but anyway that's what's happened Anyway we got chatting and he said that Hagar's mum
Says that Runa is about to explode And I think that's a good way to do it Which isn't really what I want to see from Hagaruna I think it was meant in a sort of about to take off and show you what All that potential was all about And in the aftermath of the latest Patrick Moratoglu alliance
I think that that's more likely to be the case too so we'll find out Everyone on the chat is pointing out the court 17 is the weed court So that could be a fun time Oh yes that aroma And it's also now famously what was used as the centre court in Cincinnati in challenges That was court 17, wasn't it?
Yes it was a consistency era which bugged me Sorry to bring that up My next gripe with the schedule occurs on court number five Oh yeah So we'll start with Svitalina, then Rublev, then Dimitrov, all fine News on Dimitrov's love life dropped yesterday, we're across that
Well you told me about it, I didn't know who the person was He apparently is going out with Ekensu of UK Love Island fame And US traders fame Yes, she's she's been doing the rounds Potentially one, two they have been doing the rounds
Yeah, yeah, I would say it's consistent with Grigal's relationship type Yeah, wishing them luck Okay, so those are the inserts You want to change the lady gag here Haha, yeah, with the leaves, they live Yeah, yeah Simon Briggs once took a photo with Ekensu and RIP their love Davide No hang on, Briggs isn't in the photo No, he took it It's disappointing though, isn't it?
Yeah, it's just a photo of Ekensu, it's just Ekensu and Briggs's kids Who are great, but we wanted to see Simon Yeah, it's mostly Ekensu's boobs and Simon Briggs's family Have you ever heard of this person before? You live a better life than us Davide, that's why Right, onwards to my gripe, last on court five, tomorrow court five Bobora Critchiekeva, reigning Wimbledon Champion, two time Grand Slam Champion Yeah, that's a bit rubbish That's the court that Runa posted a map to
Right, and he wasn't a Wimbledon Champion at the time Exactly Yeah, I don't know what I don't like that No, me either Okay, just delving a bit of selected matches from elsewhere in the order of play Jerry Shang against Bublick first on court 11 Patent Stearns against Sarenko, Chris U-Banks on court 11 And Luliesun, who lost the final yesterday in Monterey To Linda Noscueville, who won her first title But I'm into Luliesun, she's last on court 11 Quick turn around, isn't it, from a sort of career
Well, maybe her career best round is Wimbledon, but in terms of like getting to a final In a different country and then coming here and having to play first start That's potentially tricky, I'll be very impressed if she wins that Agreed, Donna Vechich first on court 12 tomorrow
Then Alexei Popperin trying to progress through to round three and set up that projected Jokovic clash Lost on court 12 tomorrow, it is Mata Kostyauk against Tennis in the land champion McCartney Kessler I was going to say land champion, but that doesn't work The land champion, none of it works, okay Dominic Stricker, haven't thought about him since the USA open last year He's on court four tomorrow Court 9 is where all the Brits are, isn't it David?
Actually, I don't think that is correct, I think it's 16 We were misinformed about that, but... Oh, and then you passed that misinformation onto me I did, yeah, I did, so it's my fault You're right, court 16, Harriet Darts against Chloe Pake And Yan Choynski against Roberto Kobayas Bajena Should we have a quick look at Tuesday's order of play?
Sure Seeing as it's out, Shvonne Tech Rakeemever first on Ashen Then Sinner against McKenzie McDonald, Carlos Alcoraz Headlines the night session, we shall be Rogers against Jessica Baguille Obviously Shelby Rogers last tournament, we know now Daniel Collins against... I was going to say Armstrong on Tuesday is Yeah, Armstrong is the one on Tuesday Right the way through the day, how about this David?
Daniel Collins against Carolina Dollar Heide Carolina Dollar Heide, first on Yep It only gets better, hold on to your hat Yelena wants to pank her against Naomi Osaka Okay Do you shine live it, she against Daniel Medvedev Okay, that should be great And if you haven't seen the video of his mic drop
On social media I suggest you find it He's given very detailed instructions It's a photo shoot for the ATP, it's a little shoot to get quirky little stings and so on And it's actually my friend Kate behind the camera And I can hear her giving him very clear instructions She wants him to do a mic drop like that And he nods and he goes, yep, yep, yep, yep Got it easy, yep, and then she goes, okay And we're rolling three, two, one Who does that? What was that?
Well, I wanted to do really accurate We need a new computer I was aiming for that little slot down the side anyway Are we okay? Yes, we're fine Actually, it would have been throwing it that way Right, well, there was nobody to pass it back to me that way Anyway, it's good stuff So do you sound like a bit standing in Medvedev Third on Armstrong and then the night session there, are you ready? And rescue against Paulini Followed by Sonnego Paul Good stuff, isn't it?
That's Armstrong on Tuesday is the ticket Round one of the USA And rescue Paulini is first on the night session on Armstrong Okay, well, we won't be leaving Erbe Yeah, Grandstands good as well Sit to pass Corkinakis, then Rabatkinner, then Mute Korda And then Radikonu Kennen Mute Korda, what do you say? Followed by Radikonu Kennen, Grandstand Third and fourth on, yeah Right, so Plan a Medvedev Yeah, that's a lot of stuff, isn't it?
Epic Lots of very, very good stuff Question in from Kath What is actually Ian Ahani Juice, she asks It's, uh, is it vodka? It's definitely vodka It's Gregus vodka, yeah It's cranberry juice It's a bazillion ice cubes There's a lot of melon There's melon balls But I think there might be melon, some sort of melon liqueur in, uh, in the drink Because it does taste melony, I think Yeah That's great
Hang on, hang on, there's shambor There's shambor in there I should know this because for the 2021, uh, COVID, well One of the two COVID-US Open It's slightly less COVID-E than the 2020-US Open I, for women's semi-final night Which was in the middle of the night UK time And was my one day off during that fortnight, um, working for Amazon Prime I, home made honey juices for us, didn't I?
And I bought a melon baller Which obviously I haven't used since And, uh, made melon ice cubes Which, the remainder of which sat in my freezer for two years So yeah And bought some expensive shambor Yeah, definitely shambor Vodka shambor Lemonade Soda, no, I think soda
And then, and then melon ice cubes There we go I used to like them but I can't drink anymore Not, not allowed Because it doesn't mix well with long COVID symptoms Now I call So I've stopped I have to watch you too Okay We will make up for it Good, good Um, Swanis says that sounds like a lot of sugar
Yes it is, Swanis Yeah, it's not a health choice of honey juice No, it's a mental health choice It's a mental health choice Yeah, it's exactly, chosen it exactly the right moment Uh, a honey juice is a tremendous mental health choice Um, anything else we want to cover? I'm just pumped You shocked me David Who else is pumped?
I am very pumped It's been a really good leading Yeah Don't a jinx anything, touching wood But it's been, it feels like We and the tournament are very well set up We're in a good place Another tournament that is just building this fan week I'm sure we'll see the same in Australia
Wimbledon hopes to be able to do more once it gets its plans go ahead if it ever does You know, and obviously the French Airmen was brilliant But they had 47,000 people through the doors yesterday Which is 7,000 up on last year
I mean, look, there is a point of kind of diminishing returns as an experience He was too busy yesterday Um, for me, getting around Getting into stuff, I'm sure many of you will be going to watch the tennis And may encounter some of this But, well, interest wise, the sports in rude health Yeah Yeah, yeah You should be a great atmosphere at least, down there One last question I want to cover Um, well, two last things from the chat number one Lotta love for your legs today David From what?
From your legs Oh, really? Hmm I think, I think because um, because so often your legs are cropped out of photos Yeah Due to how much of you there is Yeah People have never seen them before I mean, I've rarely seen them Yeah, I don't really do shorts very often No, it's going down a storm Great
Um, and lastly a question again, I'm afraid I didn't note down who this question was from, but great question, thank you for it Um, it is going to put us on the spot though Or, other, you on the spot, because I've had it in front of me, 45 minutes You ready?
Yes, sure Who, if the former women's champions These three specifically is going to go the furthest, Asaka and Drescu Radakani They've all got tough draws Radakani No, I'm sorry I think Asaka I've changed my mind Pagula is too tough to draw Was she going to get to Pagula?
Yeah, I think she will get to Pagula But that's um, I still think she'll beat Pagula, but logically she won I think Asaka, although That was an incredible sentence Pam picked Andrescu to beat Paulini at the live show and I can't stop thinking about it I'm not surprised Of course
But I'm going to go Asaka But I have, I've put Andrescu out into the world there So, you know, I'm covering some bases I'm trying to will it into reality Asaka for me I mean, Gelae and Rostapenko has had a great season We're all writing her off Correct Okay Such believer in Asaka can't help it It's hard not to be in here as well, isn't it?
I've backed her comeback all the way too much really, I did expect too much of her But it's because I'm just such a believer in that game, you watch it and you're like Well, this is this level wise you've got something that not many have got here But then as we so often say it's not about the top level, is it? It's about the it's about the middle And we've only seen the top level for about an hour All season, or maybe two hours
Really? Okay, well that's a bummer But it might be about to come out now, let's hope so It might be, yeah It's definitely a world where they all do the same at the US Open Leads first round Yeah Like given the doors, that's not unlikely All second round Yeah
I think if they get, well apart from Adakana who's got the very difficult second round Looming, I think the first round is the huge test for Asaka and for Andrescu Given they've got Osterpenko and Paulini If they can get through that, they might work the way into the draw a bit
But probably the most likely outcome is that They all lose in the first round I don't know, Radakana who over-cannon I think is Is going to happen actually Some people in the chat wanting to know exactly how tall you are David, 6-7 is the answer to that Correct, yeah These are tall men
And James wants to know when or will the US Open move to a Sunday start I'm staggered they haven't already Yeah It's inevitable isn't it Yeah, and particularly because today feels like the only day that they haven't really got a day They've done this whole fan week they've got, they've had the most incredible kids day yesterday I mean still thousands are showing up today from practice matches and so forth So it's not like it's not effective but actually I'd expect this to be a ticket today
Where they're making a fortune next year Maybe there's a reason they're not doing it so that I don't know about as somebody who's not from around Could be an ESPN thing I don't know But it does feel like an obvious next move Yeah and as we know from our US Open Relive show this week there were a couple of years where they did schedule 15 day events But they were 15 day events ending on the third Monday So it's not like they're not ready to do a 15 day event Yeah I think it's going to happen
But I enjoyed my walk around Central Park so much this morning It's going to get taken from me isn't it? Maybe we'll have to come a day earlier Fair, it's on mode Yeah I think that's it folks That's it for our previews all that is left to do is to take your seat on Armstrong at 1015 tomorrow Matt And watch tennis and talk about it Done What is it?
It's a tough life folks it is a tough life We honestly can't wait We can't wait I have to say this is on the eve of every slam don't I But we're in good shape going to this one Still buzzing from the live show on Thursday And it's been a good build up No major injury concerns
Not sort of on retirement alert for anybody other than Sloan Stevens In the due to my conspiracy theory In good shape And we have our mascot Bruno We've been sent some detailed information about Bruno today Haven't we which will be going in tomorrow's newsletter photos as well there's a photo of him
On our Instagram at the moment he is a pose of folks He has been to the Billie Jean School of posing for photos and I love it Hello to our mascot David as Francis And of course the dearly departed Darwin for me trying to honour his memory Week in week out and it's it's a lot of pressure but I do try

Maureg is in Scotland and she says Since I doubt you'll find any tennis Maureg I will repeat my fact from last year that she shares a birthday with Bianca and Drescu That's good I love it when they help us out There used to be a Maureg in one of the Australian soap operas Whether it was home in a way or neighbours and I can't remember which First time I'd ever heard that name until our Maureg came along Okay Were they of Scottish heritage because I think it's a very Scottish name isn't it?
I have no idea Maureg Bokton is a fictional character from the Australian Channel 7 soap opera home in a way Oh my god I remember her Cricky that's a face isn't it? Okay You want to come to me for things like that? Thank you Maureg We've also got Graham Taylor Not like the England manager The England manager Graham with a...
Good bit no G-R-A-E-M-E is our spelling here M-E Yes no different spelling I once met the late Graham Taylor very very briefly When I went on a work experience to Pebble Mill The old BBC studios in Birmingham And yes he was the England manager at the time and he was under massive pressure
Because he things went going very well And I was remarked upon or I was remembered how he just sort of very politely nodded The I had obviously clocked who he was And very much known as a gentleman But anyway And he always makes me think of our mate Dave
Because our mate Dave is a big Graham Taylor guy Yeah what for sure The manager And Graham And Graham would also like to give a shout out to his son Now I don't know how to pronounce this Lacklin or Lacklin Lacklin I think Well I think Brits would say Lacklin but maybe Well Scottish So Lacklin My grandma Scottish My dad was born in Scotland I can pull that off And you did?
Yeah And Lacklin lives in Leicester And Lacklin and Graham are planning to go to the US Open For the first time this year Oh, thank you, hi mate Please do, yeah that's great Great time Graham And finally we have Ben Olson in Florida
Ben? Ben Shelton Yeah on the order of play tomorrow Ben has listed some of his favourite live tennis experiences This year in Madrid he attended the tournament And he was cheering so loudly for Daniel Collins That someone asked if he was part of Collins' family That's good work Ben That is proud
Beat that, listeners Yeah, Ben that's That's awesome Thank you, thank you very much And just finally Since your incredible Moranx shout David The Stote to Byhanna, the chat has been alive With discussion of home and away They've moved on to talk of Alph And I simply can't let this moment pass
Without telling everybody My Alph from home and away fact Okay I knew a, or I still know a cameraman That used to work on home and away And he told me that Alph had Now this could, I don't, is Alph still in home and away This is an idiot I don't know I just remember he used to call people a hoon
Or a galar Flaming galar, yeah Well To my knowledge he's still alive And in home and away But that knowledge is not, I'm not keeping up to date with that knowledge But anyway he has it in his contract Or had if it's not up to date knowledge That he had to have a scene in every single show That's a good contract insertion, isn't it?
What if he was on a holiday I think they would film a block of Alph Because it just be behind the counter and serving someone in the shop And then you could film a bank of those in one And just roll one in Insert that into my tennis podcast contract Yeah Well that's good
Oh my gosh, contractual Alph is Hannah's response to that Actually this cameraman gave me quite a lot of home and away gossip Which absolutely nobody else will be interested in But I was hanging on it I love a chat with him afterwards He filmed the first ever Lesbian kiss on Australian TV
This cameraman On home and away Amazing What a thing to have on your CV Okay It's time to get this show off the road It's time for some tennis We are but 6, 7, 8, 16 hours away Ish, 16, 17, we're about 16 hours away from Matt taking his seat on Armstrong
