Episode description

Carlos Alcaraz is out of the US Open. The Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion was beaten in straight sets by Botic van de Zandschulp on a shocking night on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Catherine, David and Matt watched every ball and went to Alcaraz's press conference. What went wrong? Just how impressive was Van de Zandschulp? How did Alcaraz explain his performance? And what does it mean for the rest of the tournament? We discuss all of that, as well as Karolina Muchova's victory over Naomi Osaka, the withdrawal of Elena Rybakina, Jannik Sinner brushing off criticism from Nick Kyrgios, and so much more on a seismic day in New York.

Well, hello and welcome to the tennis podcast on day four of the US Open, where it is 27 minutes past midnight and you find myself, Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts, convened in the media garden, a chilly media garden, an eerie media garden as we have all just watched. Carlos Alcras, the third seed, the Wimbledon and French Open Champion, the Olympic silver medalist, lose in straight sets, 6'1, 75, 64 to Burtic, Evander Zanskul. It's fair to say that we

and Carlos Alcras are reeling, David. Yeah, that's one of the bigger upsets that I can remember seeing in a stadium in person. I think if we were to go back, we can find other big shocks like Serena Williams losing in the first round of the French Open in 2012. Ratham Adalto, Lucas Rossel, there's a number of them over the years that you can point to Roger Federer losing to Tommy

Robreira here in 2013 and losing to Serga Stakowski, things like that. But considering what Alcras has done this year, the way that he's won those last two grandstand tournaments and given who he was up against as somebody that has just not done anything for a couple of years in Burtic, Evander Zanskul and who has lost way more matches than he's won, it was a huge surprise and to seem unable to dig into anything and find any answers at all. Yeah, it wasn't a totally unfamiliar

Carlos Alcras performance, was it? We've seen performances like that from him. I immediately think of the one against Alexander Zanjusvara of it, the Australian Open this year against Alexander Zanjusvara of it, the French Open, a couple of years though, this has happened but I have to say, after this

summer in this year, I thought these performances were behind him. I really did. Yeah, and he's just said in the Spanish portion of his press conference that he felt like he'd taken a mental leap this summer and it was a very short press conference but I have to think that he was referring to the fact

that he won the French Open without playing anywhere near his best tennis. For a large portion of that match tonight, it was kind of giving the guest, yes, but the young performance, where you just sort of thinking, gosh, this isn't the Carlos Alcras we're used to seeing and you know, it was a magnitude worse than that, I would say, tonight. But he got so good during the summer at not playing his best tennis but finding it and keeping it together for long enough

and then eventually playing really well in matches and it just did not come tonight. Like you, Catherine, in those early stages, I was thinking, oh, okay, I've seen Carlos Alcras played some poor first sets before. I'm not too worried here. David, on the other hand, was pretty alarmed very early on that something was up. Second game, I felt on his behalf uncomfortable and I think it was because he was running all over the court like Rose Runner, like a junior.

He was running all that, you know, chasing down balls, extraordinary lobs from Botteback Render's NHC, which were getting Alcras, racing back to the backstop and the crowd, going, wow, look how fast he can run, you know, and then he'd lift the lob up and then he'd have to do a tween and then he'd almost win a point but then he wouldn't win the point. And I just remember thinking he's not in charge of these points. I know it's only two games in but he's not

in charge of the points. He's reacting and then it just kind of carried on like that. Yeah, I saw the same and I think I still think reactive Carlos Alcras should be winning that much. I think the issue for me was that the decision making was really, really poor. You know, it was like it was like a strike without a finish. He would start crafting some rallies and then he'd miss the put away. You know, several times we saw that or just make odd decisions about how to try and

finish off a rally, even sort of a well-crafted rally. Meanwhile, Botteback Render's Answers Hall down the other end of the court was honestly sublime. I think we're, you know, we're going to end up owing him an apology after this podcast for definitely not giving him the time he deserves because inevitably Carlos Alcras is the story. And PS, we might own Dennis Schappelvalov, an apology who also got taken to the cleaners by Botteback Render's Answers Hall in round one.

And, you know, having not seen all that much of that match, we thought, you know, you shouldn't be losing to Botteback Render's Answers Hall by this score line. But what do we know? And, frankly, he has been in the abyss, really, for quite a while now. You know, it was, it was a few years ago where he was a dangerous, tricky opponent, you know, he was, he's all

good to play against because he's very talented. He's an incredible ball striker. He's very languid in the way he hits the ball, but he can really inject some pace and he's also got good touch. So a few years ago, I would have said, Botteback Render's Answers Hall, slightly awkward opponent. In the context of the last 12 months, I did not give him a prayer tonight. Honestly, I thought Alcras was going to absolutely take him apart because of the fact that he's not been in

good form. And I've seen him come so close to winning matches and kind of choked them away in the last 12 months. He's got extremely tight and big moments. And I just thought, this is not a guy who is going to be upsetting Carlos Alcras. It was kind of like, as that first set was developing and David next to us was getting quite worried. I was kind of thinking about the about the famous Alex Ferguson line, like, Lads, it's Tottenham, like, I was thinking,

it's Botteback Render's Answers Hall. Like, he's not been in good form. Alcras is going to get his game together and how wrong was I because yes, Alcras never found his top level on a consistent basis. But Vandex Answers Hall was awesome for the whole match. He wasn't missing from the baseline. His net play was remarkable. The way he was reading Alcras's game and putting him in awkward spots,

lobbing him, like, he did everything brilliantly. And he's also got the kind of disposition and temperament that meant that he wasn't bothered at all by whatever Carlos Alcras was doing down the other end. Like, he wasn't noticing it. It was just in his own bubble. And it's kind of surprising to me that with that game and with that temperament, he hasn't caused an upset like this in the past because it all sort of seems tailor-made for it today. He kept it together brilliantly

and he was awesome. And whatever we say about Carlos Alcras and how bad he was doesn't take away that fact from Vandex Answers Hall. He was immense. And if you have enjoyed Matt underestimating but at Vandex Answers Hall, you are going to enjoy part two of this podcast that we recorded earlier on today. What's going to be part one? There is a treat in store for you at about 20 minutes time, folks. But you're not alone, Matt. But firstly, we clearly didn't see this coming either.

Neither did Carlos Alcras. The first words he said in the press conference were, you know, credit to him. He said he didn't make the mistakes that I thought he would today. No three points. And then he started talking about his own level and how that wasn't good enough to win the match. But I did find that interesting from Alcras because I expect him to go on to court thinking,

doesn't matter how many, doesn't matter how he plays. I just need to find my level and that's it. But it sounded like he went on to court thinking, well, lads, it's Tottenham. But I think that actually it manifests itself like that in that answer. But I think what he expects is what you've just detailed that normally if Carlos Alcras pulls out his box of tricks, if it's not the forehand, it's the drop shot. If it's not the drop shot, it's the servant

volley. Something will hurt the opponent, something will get the job done. He's got so much and one of them will work. And the truth is none of them were working, partly because they weren't executed well enough, but also because Vanossashock just reads it so well. And he was diffusing it all because he was getting there. And zero winners in the first set is what popped up on that screen. And that was the most shocking moment. And that made me think, well, I still think Carlos Alcras should

win from a set down. But how bad must he be playing to have hit zero winners in a set? Then he was smiling in the second set and we were thinking, oh, okay, he's starting to enjoy this now. And it's all the Carlos Alcrashock. But actually reminding me that he was doing a lot of that and his comeback briefly against Vereth in Australia, but it was almost as though... But now he's getting chips. You're going to get coffee tonight. But I mean, you know,

The Lvatsu people judged me. They said you shouldn't be getting coffee at 11 p.m. Oh, you were like, well, I think I'm in for a long night. You know, this should be two in the morning job. But well, it wasn't. But it looked like he just didn't know what was going on. And he described it in the press conference as like being on a roller coaster. He would be up for a few minutes and a few rallies. And then he would crash down again and he would feel low.

And I just think that that's the whole... And he didn't. He said the Olympic disappointment wasn't it. But it sounds like the kind of accumulation of mental fatigue has caught up with him. There was some credit. It was a short press conference, both the English and Spanish Shakespeare and some incredible lines from in my thought. And PS sidebar, how much is his English in Paris. Oh, it's amazing. The way he was able to express himself was really striking.

He said it was a fight against myself in my mind out there. Today I was playing the opponent and I was playing against myself. I had a lot of emotions. I couldn't control. And Matt, we very accidentally stumbled upon a real moment. I think which is going to stay with me and perhaps reveals that despite how incredibly well Alcara has handled himself in that press conference,

this is going to hurt. Yes, just as we were going into the press conference, we came across Alcara standing outside the press conference room with his head against the wall, looking down and his agents standing literally right next to him with his hand on his shoulder. Don't know what he was saying, but saying something to him, giving him some advice before he headed into the press conference. And it was just a real like, oh, this guy's a kid kind of

still. He's not. But in terms of his professional career and dealing with moments like this, he's new to it still. And we've seen him completely conquer the tennis world over the last couple of years and get to number one and win grand slams and everything's happening at such a rate. And he's also had some downs in the last year as well. But that scene was just a reminder that he's young and he's affected by all this and he experiences emotions and nerves and sadness.

Sometimes when you're watching him play tennis and seeing him pull off impossible things that you've never seen anyone else do before, you sort of can forget all that, I think. And yeah, like it was a really striking scene of a young player navigating and learning. And learning is something he said repeatedly in the press conference. I need to learn from this experience and get better. And he looks like he needs a break but he's ravenous to just

figure this one out, the way he's figured other stuff out. A word by the way, for the lunch volley, the lunch half volley. We need to give it a word because his map pointed out he didn't get the appreciation it deserved in the stadium. I honestly, well, for starters, I didn't know Burtick van der Zanzelke was a player that could produce a shot like that. And number two,

there aren't many players that can produce a shot like that. There was a comparable one from Caroleena Mukover in the first match of the night session and you and I marveled at it, David, well, we all did. And I said, there's not many players that can do that. And you said, I think I think it's pretty much only her. Certainly on the women's side, well, I was kind of thinking the same about Burtick van der Zanzelke, but got voted hours later. I was so ready for tonight's

pod to be a big Mukover Alkairz comp pod. You know, they've got they both got the best hands on tour and their agility and they're actually it's a Mukover Burtick van der Zanzelke. The other bloke, I mean, just to just to describe you didn't see the shot yet. He's coming on a decent forehand down the line and an Alkairz has bust a gut to get out to his left and hit the perfect passing shot with the backhand fast, rifled just over the net, dipping at his feet, it lands

on the ground, but it's not a proper half volley. It sort of bounces up. So he's having to basically take a sort of cushioned volley on the rise on the backhand at full stretch, control it out of reach of the fastest man in tennis. That is an astonishing feat and at that point just as he hit that shot, a stat went up on the screen showing that van der Zanzelke in midway through the third set had won 26 out of 31 net points and Alkairz had managed 10 out of 17 and I thought

that is a telling number right there. He took the net away from Alkairz a lot tonight, didn't he? That's three times the number of approaches and he's lost even fewer than his opponents. It was ever so slightly ruined, that incredible shot by the fact that two points later he double-faulted and gave up the break and at that moment I was kind of like okay like

that's the ball seat van der Zanzelke that I've been expecting all night. He's just done something brilliant but then he's double-faulted his break away and I was just as impressed by how he responded to that double-fault and giving up the break and it wasn't long before he broke again and that double-fault was kind of the only moment when there was a flicker otherwise he was just impenetrable really. Big night for people that can accurately pronounce

Berthick van der Zanzelke which is not the umpire. Your service is very much required to perform. Berthick van der Zanzelke as Matt pointed out he wasn't expecting to be saying that name as much as he did tonight. It's a tough name not everybody has their disposal. Not everyone's had tutoring from various different Dutch listeners. Maybe it was an omen that we saw Paul Harhus outside Grand Central Station. Well got blanked by Paul Harhus outside

Grand Central Station a couple of days ago. He said a cheery hello to me before the match maybe knew something. Maybe he did. Right well we do by the way do we like totally believe Alkairaz about the Olympics and saying that he's totally over that? No I think I think just because it wasn't specifically present in his mind doesn't mean you're over it you know it can leave an imprint on your soul for a while and without it being in your brain. It all feels very teag that he's talking

about. Yeah well it's a contributing fact. It feels very similar to a year ago when I know it's a far more decorated opponent in in Dono Mervadev than it was tonight but it was a similar kind of feel to the performance. This was worse from him and I actually think Van der Zahn short was better than Medvedev was in winning that match last year but just like then it came off an absolute heartbreaking loss to know that Jolkiewicz and again that may become incidents but it just

feels similar. I wonder what the winters like. What's November going to be like when he's got tall finals and he was so poor last year I mean I know he's had injury problems too but he was so flat in that period of time. And he's going to have Davis Cup finals you would think and that will be a big target for him I would have thought but he's also going to be going to Australia aiming to become the youngest man to complete the career slam. And we'll probably all be picking.

Yep tough day for predictions today. We should talk about the Draper the Jack Draper of it all shouldn't we David you did a beautiful interview with Jack Draper earlier which is now unbroadcastable. It's almost exclusively about Karls Alkairz. I mean fortunately they put it on air immediately before Alkairz lost so it was all worthwhile but I mean it was this a very

comfortable win for Draper today against Fakundo Diaz Acosta. It was two left-ears and he's just more powerful and overwhelmed him really but what's really interesting now I mean I think when he won that it felt like oh this is going to be interesting for him to have a crack at Alkairz

given he beat him on grass quite recently. Suddenly he's not playing Alkairz. Suddenly nobody's playing Karls Alkairz in this draw and when I saw what it is left what it is led to this this this result tonight and the fact that you're going to end up with a semi-finalist at the US open that has never been to a Grand Slam semi-final before it is going to be one of Van the Zanschup against Draper or Gothan or Mahatch or Diminora Evans or Arnaldi or Thompson.

None of them have ever made a Grand Slam semi-final before one of them will. That I absolutely love. I mean I think I will always be sad to lose the show of Karls Alkairz but that's a pretty cool lineup. Yeah agreed and just to kind of round off the Draper point I am interested in how he deals with it not being Alkairz now because when you did that interview with him it pretty much

exclusively about Karls Alkairz. He didn't shut it down did he and go no no I don't you know we don't know who my opponent is going to be yet I'll focus on myself and couch you know. I mean he thought the same as we did that he's going to be playing the guard. And was pumped for it.

Yeah it's absolutely. It's a very different prospect. I think it helps in a way that that it was so soon afterwards that he's he's now found out he's got the whole of tomorrow to try to just put that out of his mining you know and he's got a very straightforward demeanor he's got a very straightforward coach they are going to just knuckle down and get on with the job of trying to figure out a way to best beat the guy who can play that sort of tennis

in Bottegrin his own shop. So I don't think it'll affect Draper. I suppose there's a question mark whether the added pressure of suddenly having this window of opportunity that's what we've got now we've got eight players who suddenly don't have to beat one of the best ranked highest ranked

players in the world they've got a bit people like them okay I mean Alex Dimman or might look around and say well no hold on I mean I'm hand shoulders above all these people in terms of my ranking and what I've done but he's coming off an injury you know it's it's so interesting right now. And look you'll you'll hear Max takes on Thomas Mahatch in part two and and back who's big on Thomas Mahatch Mahatch and that was at a time when he thought that Mahatch would be playing

Alcoraz on Monday. It's in my diary. Yeah guys I'm free on Monday. Part two is a riot folks a couple of things still to cover off in in part one before we before we take you back several hours ago to the exact same location that we're in now actually. Daniel Medvedev beat Fabian Marajan over on Armstrong while the the madness on Ash was happening didn't see a ball of this quite frankly full disclosure but did see a clip from post-match interview where Daniel Medvedev

compared the vibe on Armstrong to an Italian restaurant. It was like the foods goods. Yeah I was so much going on your head like it's closed. Yeah I was like if you've been eating intonies where the waiter starts singing opera. Amazing. I mean he could be. Yeah yeah maybe that's just happening in every Italian restaurant in Manhattan quite possibly. So Daniel Medvedev is through and Caroline was the ackey one through against Renata Zarazua over on Armstrong this evening as

well. Now the match the match we were expecting to be the headline if today's pod was Nomea Saka against Caroline and Mukafa one by Mukafa in a in a rollback the year kind of fashion for me it was it was really strange actually she was wearing whether it was the exact same kit as she was wearing it last year's US open or just a very very similar one from her kit sponsor which I think

is Adidas isn't it she looked exactly the same. Yeah and seeing her out there sitting the exact same seats that we watched her play well a lot of matches last year but most notably for me the that Coco Goss semi-final which was interrupted of course by protesters gluing themselves to the seats you know more the floor wasn't it very very memorable match. I just felt like I was watching Caroline and Mukafa a year ago and like the last year of her basically playing no tennis and being

devastated by injury once again and us wondering if she would ever really find a proper way back. I felt like that was gone and hadn't happened it was it was like a sort of dream like state watching her play like that. That was a wrist injury wasn't it that kept her out all that time to think you could come back from an injury like that 10 months out of the sport and be able to play like that

and look like you've not been injured at all. I mean it was a good contest generally I or Sarkas gonna have some real regrets because she set herself up with some amazing opportunities that she just blew frankly set points in that second set but still Mukafa makes you fall in love with the sport. There were fans in there that I felt didn't know maybe too much about her you know Sarkas the name they remember her but you're big guiled by what you're seeing from Mukafa though

she serves and volley. She serves and volley's like somebody from the 80s at times it's so natural that when she comes in there's no panic there's everything's perfectly balanced and and we we described the half volley she hit earlier on and it's just it's and you you mentioned something

while we were sat there Catherine you don't hear her footsteps you know you hear all these squeaky shoes of all these players screeching into balls to to stop and turn and move and and with her it's just feather like hmm it's like princess in the pea stuff like everything is

cushioned yeah so my her shots are cushioned her feet are cushioned it's like she's exists in a cloud she's so nice to have a back I'm so happy she's back playing I mean it's it's sad to lose a Sarka again and and you know I tough night for the tournament this yeah frankly isn't it it is an

Sarka is honestly she's she's as big a deal here is golf she feels very popular very well known and and you know it's tough to see her saying her press comments just how how much she said it's like a piece of me dies inside when I lose a match like this and and that's you know temporary thankfully

but you know it gives an idea of just how hurtful it is in the moment her overall assessment of a year was was not negative she gave everything she's she said she took something from all the ground slams but clearly she's disappointed and and she's just gonna she says I'm just gonna have

to go and try and work out the plan really it's interesting isn't it because she was the ultimate big match player yeah no me a Sarka you know there was that step wasn't there when you know when she'd reach the latter stages of a grand slam tournament she would always convert it into actually

winning the title she was so good in the highest pressure moments and you know sort of what has defined a couple of her big losses this season I'm thinking of this one tonight and the Shfiantec one at the French Open was in the really big moments she's missed short forehands or short balls

and you know on match point tonight she missed okay it was a it was a swing volley which I think is always quite a danger of shot but she was you know right on right on top of the net basically she shouldn't have missed it and on her set point she missed forehands and double-folds on one

of them as well and that must just be perplexing for her like why why did I used to be able to summon my very best tennis when I needed it most and now I can't and yeah I think that's a really tough place to be in she's also got a really poor record from a set down like she I

think she's lost every match she's played this year when she's lost the first set so like they definitely have been little moments and some you look it's positive overall that she's back and playing and I think she's got that perspective but I I sort of think by now I was thinking

that we'd be seeing more and look she's going to finish the year on hard course isn't she and um lots of tournaments in Asia and that's I think going to be good for her to potentially find some more consistent form that's what's been lacking the consistency um and you know we're now on

hard course for a little while as well you know start the next year's all going to be on hard course so she's got a little run at this now um but yeah pretty brutal the way that her very best tennis is is deserting her and in the biggest matches and moments when that used to

absolutely define her and that's a tough tough cycle to break because every time that happens it feels more likely to happen again you know I feel like you can see her not quite trusting herself yeah it used to be so natural and and and finding

finding naturalness again feels you know quest for a name and elusive thing oh it's late folks you know um I think it was Lindsey Gibbs I read on on Twitter saying that it's a reminder of the impossibly high bar that Kim Klister set absolutely when she happened to

to have her child Jayda who was older actually 18 months old when when she came back and she won the US Open her second tournament back and the assumption is oh it's quite easy you know and it's not easy it's bloody hard that's such an important point for Lindsey Gibbs because

honestly you know end of last season when we found out that Asaka was coming back and started this season I went really big on it on Asaka and that that's in large part just because of how much I believe in her game how good I think her game is but it's also I I think it was

fueled by the fact that not long before that we had told that Kim Klister story as part of the tennis relift hadn't we it was a year ago it was leading into the US Open last year and I had that in my mind and I I guess the logic was I think Naomi Asaka is as good as Kim

Klisters why can't she do that um because it's bloody difficult and that was extraordinary what Kim Klisters did I think that's a really important thing to remember can I just have a final word on Mukava because like you I just loved watching her tonight and um was actually

watching this match with you too but also with my friend from the WTA John who is who is half check we lost Matt to a film fan for a large swathe with this evening and he he has excellent insights into Mukava as as someone who you know speaks the language and you know

really likes watching her play as well and he was telling me about how how Mukava's family is a football in her family her her father was a former football player is now an now an assistant manager at a football team in in Czech Republic and Mukava's brother is the

goalkeeper for that team and when you see Mukava at the net she's she's got the agility of a goalkeeper you know the way she covers the the ground and what you were talking about in terms of like how kind of light she is on her feet these are these are all like transferable qualities to a goalkeeper

and it just kind of seems that it's in her in her DNA like you can't really teach the way that Mukava moves on a tennis court and the hand skills that she's got as well and she isn't as Rasmata as Alkaraz she's never going to be that force of personality but tennis-wise in her own way

with the agility and with the hands and with the shot-making there's a lot of kind of similarities there and like it is just a joy to watch her play and I thought Asaka was comfortable in this match in the first set and it didn't it was just a little drop off and Mukava suddenly started

rushing her on the return and slicing and coming forward and just accelerated ahead and it was a level that Asaka couldn't couldn't live with and we we always go on about Asaka's level and how good it is and how imprinted it is on our mind but I think Mukava's top level is right up there with with the very best players in the world. So you were sitting there comparing Karolina Mukava to Bernt Leno throughout this match were you was that the vibe? Full of goalkeeper. Yeah

Super Bernt Leno and goal. Can you can you work out one for Mukava? You know like a song? I think you just did. Come on. Right I feel like people might need to be taken back to a simpler time an earlier time a really in with the benefit of hindsight quite funny time just before we take you back to earlier a word from our sponsors who are of course AO travel and experiences we are brought to

you in partnership with AO travel and experiences throughout this US open they are one two three your one stop off for the Australian open and that as I've been telling you include cheating his exam they're looking over at the script red red over my shoulder. That's impusht me stop me doing it. That includes the AO reserve which truly is the way to elevate your Australian open experience I was on the AO reserve webpage earlier there are some sexy options

on there. Seriously, seriously sexy options I'll tell you about them over the course of the next few days but the one I've picked out from today to tell you about is the champions rooftop. Oh yeah. Indulging on one of a kind experience the champions rooftop is on the Rod Labour arena balcony I think actually it might be where they sometimes hold the legends all access hour. Oh yeah. Where us mere mortals are allowed to visit the balcony but we're sort of behind a

cordon and not allowed to touch any of the refreshments. It's like looking through a glass window at how the other half lives but you can live that way if you like you can be immersed in the players open air sanctuary with unrivaled views and Al fresco dining by famed Cambio de Tezio of London. We should probably start Matt by talking about the withdrawal of Elena with Rebecca in her due to unspecified injuries. That's what she's putt she said. I've had to withdraw due to my injuries that in a social media statement. This is her eighth retirement or withdrawal of the calendar year. Eighth. I've never known anything like it. Yeah it's really quite upsetting actually. The year that Rebecca has had in terms of health and there's been so many different types of

retirement some withdrawals. Some she's not even entered the tournament. Sometimes she's entered him in part of the draw and then we're drawn before playing a match and sometimes like here she's played a match and then had to withdraw mid-tornamons. Yeah it was news that I think first came

through to us via the US Open app. It just appeared on there that Jessica Ponce, her opponent had had a tick next to her name as though she had gone through and then as you said this statement came out from Rebecca and her one that's pretty vague and doesn't refer to anything specific other than just injuries. But it's as I said really upsetting that this keeps happening to Rebecca and I don't want to speculate on what it is and just wish her all the best really because it is

impeding her career massively right now. I think back to I always mention it I think back to the Brisbane final start of the year. Some of the very best tennis you could ever see and kind of since then she's just been this picture of of ill health and really really feel for Rebecca and her and the thing is it can happen when you're expecting it you know we've had

tournaments this year where we've been really on alert for Rebecca and her to be withdrawing but you know she didn't look at her absolute best in the first round but this wasn't on my radar for today that it was a possibility that she would withdraw so it does seem like she's having these big ups and downs and more downs and ups at the moment and yeah just really hope she can

be healthier. And in terms of this draw at this tournament obviously big picture everything you've said Matt we wish Rebecca no well and we worry about her but in terms of this draw it's a massive boon to Eagish Filntake isn't it one of two today well three if you count the fact

that she played sublime tennis a real mismatch against Ena Sheba Harada the qualifier different us at the world qualifying win through around but it was just different weight classes different brands of tennis today she beat her six love six one second on the Arthur Astrash Stadium

so there's that there's Rebecca and his withdrawal though I'm sure she won't take you know wouldn't want Rebecca to remove from the draw that way and there's also the fact that Miran Draver is gone from her section probably on paper the the biggest test lurking in her quarter and Andrava was

brushed aside really by Ashling Krueger today Krueger continuing some of the really breakthrough form that she showed in Cincinnati where she beat Naomi Asalka and Donna Vekits and she made Miran Draver look a bit anemic today did Krueger she looked underpowered and if Andrava's game

isn't sharp and if a mind isn't sharp which is what it looked like to me then I think she is susceptible to looking a bit underpowered that's the the the challenge I think that she and Kinshi Tamati Nizhav in that there's there's almost an assumption that this is the next big thing

of the sport and somebody who's going to win multiple grand slam titles I certainly feel like in terms of just raw ability of of hitting the ball and working players out she's special she's a real talent and she's somebody I love watching she she does things that nobody

else in the game today does but then I think back to latter years of Martina Hinges's career she's the sort of player I compare it to in terms of style and Hinges couldn't keep up powerwise anymore and couldn't couldn't win the big titles so it's not a given it's absolutely not a given

and look she's so young there's no need to to ask too many of those questions about it but I still stand by that the the idea that it is a foregone conclusion that she goes and wins multiple grand slam titles should not be a thing and I think the point about her mind

needing to be sharp was particularly true in this match I was watching a bit of the the match she kept foot folding which was really strange and perhaps just sort of demonstrative of the fact that she was in a little bit of a fluster out there and you know her it's funny her serve when

I watch the play against Fiontech the other week was really effective I think she hit a double figures aces in that match today it looked like a really vulnerable shot and Kruger was getting on top of it and able to break quite a lot and yeah like it's been a couple of tough slams for

her since the semi final run in Paris but just as David said she's she's got this game which she's still figuring out how to impose I think on her opponents and because it's not it's not obvious how she wins tennis matches you know sometimes you look at a play anything else is just going to blast them off the court that just isn't the case with me or Andrea which is what makes her so fascinating but also leaves her a little bit vulnerable if if things aren't really working.

We don't yet know with Fiontech who she will face in round three looks at the moment likely to be Anastasia Pavlii Chankovic she's too love up in the third on Elizabeth Cotcioreto but just looking through her draw here Shiontech she wins through that third round it would be the

winner of some son of a Kruger good players but hard to see them troubling Shiontech if world number one Shiontech shows up after that it would be one of Pagula Buthas Manero who beat a really struggling Katie Bolter today Sarah Errani into the third round and Diana Schneider Schneider

is the one I'm circling from all of those remaining in Shiontech's quarter I know I should probably be circling Pagula I was very impressed with her today against Kennin she was just far too solid for Kennin there was a brief period it starts the second set where Kennin got a break and

she was you know bobbing around and doing her march around the court that she doesn't even thought oh she's got the bit between her teeth and Pagula was just like yeah nah I'm weathering this we're fine have we heard much since the tournament began I I haven't personally on on court speed

because I know that was a big conversation coming in here but like I don't it's clearly not as quick as Cincinnati was but I just think Pagula has had some success on quick car courts against Shiontech she's taken some real thrashings on slow hard courts but like she's played her so I do

think I'm kind of circling Pagula and Schneider I think Schneider because of the unknown quantity and we don't really know what her peak level is feels like a big threat to Shiontech for sure but I do think if the conditions are quick I do think Pagula would would have a shot against Shiontech

I think they're relatively quick aren't they but for sure slower than Cincinnati I've just interviewed Jack Draper who described them as flat medium and to me that is perfect he said in enables me to show my use my skills I think he means his hands a little bit and it's you know

it's not all just PlayStation tennis but he says it also enables me to use my power and to my mind that is perfect for the neutral perfect for the viewer good for players and and it's definitely not too quick for Shiontech now that she's got a Ryan I mean I I watched a fair bit of that from

the commentary box today she just looked like I know it was not the opponent that she will face if she faces Schneider or or Pagula but she just looked like Shiontech today you know she was just just off and like the runaway train stuff there is the element with the women's

shore of the balls being different which makes it's the interaction of the balls and the court and the air conditions isn't it which all sort of comes together to create the court speed so could be different on the the women's side as always at this tournament there are some some W.J.

players calling out the fact that the women do play with different balls here and it still makes absolutely no sense to me and I'm yet to really hear someone explain to me why that's that's a good thing to do and they've changed haven't they because last year they they played with the balls that the men play with two years ago they were playing with different ones and now they're playing with different ones again and I do think the balls that the women play with fly more you know they're not

as they're not as heavy they're lighter they fly more probably does speed things up but yeah like Schneider Schneider I still think is just a bit of an unknown quantity like which makes a really exciting like I don't think many people are you know outside of clearly the tennis bubble like people don't know Diana Schneider and we don't know what her ceiling is I don't we don't know but she's obviously won a lot you know she's won titles this year on different surfaces and she when you watch her

because she's always bandaged up you kind of there's always part of you that thinks oh like surely this player is going to be beatable but then she just keeps bringing it and she's got weapons which is what you need to beat someone like you to feel she's the new Alize Corners and she

winning whilst mummified she she's beaten a lot of different types of players she's she won a heck of a lot of matches and I don't know the exact number but she's always in tournaments doing something going deep beating people I mean today she beat my Clara Towson who I'd got all my

you know chips on in the predictions which are just going I mean I had Rebecca to win the tournament beating an islam over in the final David came back from having watched a bit of that Clara Towson, Diana Schneider, match and was key I think I mean she's she's too predictable she's

too ponderous to be honest she's got incredible power and ball striking timing but you know she was exposed by Schneider who's just all the things that she's not she's got good movement she's really swift to change direction and and because of the being a lefty it's it's all quite unpredictable

at the moment you know this might be one of the years that Schneider's at her best because she's still unpredictable maybe that all changes the years go on but yeah I think she's a she's a proper wild card in this draw Jasmine Paul Leanie also threw two round three having played the shortest

recorded us open match of all time it was three points long oh dear what is a shame I mean I didn't see exactly what happened to blish caron it's a foot injury well yes it was a foot injury I think there was something pre-existing there because when when we were getting the close-ups

of blish carvers feet which is one of tennis's least elegant things I think injured foot close-ups but there was pre-existing strapping on the foot which was revealed and she removed the sock so my guess is there was something pre-existing but she did do something or feel something

early stages and it was it was clear she was going to have to call it a day immediately and Paulini then had an afternoon to play with and went to watch her doubles partner Erani win through to the third round what of five those two are perhaps Erani serve is her guilty pleasure

as well how is she doing it I just don't understand as she's falling it off they just won their doubles and like they just bound it off the court like you know a less celebrities being followed by huge crowd it's wonderful Paulini is such a vibe and like you know she's played she's played

three points everyone on arm strong is obviously you know it's a it's a half ticketed court there's lots of people who have paid a lot of money to be on that court and actually a lot of people everyone here has paid a lot of money given the ticket prices and like it's it's such a tough

scene and yet you get like an extended Paulini interview because of it and and Blair Henley who just had to do an interview with Thomas Mahatch suddenly gets called upon again to do one with Pauli to do one with Paulini and did a fantastic job and Paulini just like I think somehow despite

it only being three points long managed to leave everyone you know an arm strong like they'd actually got a little bit of an experience because she's just she's just sort of such a breath of fresh air you you just smile through her interviews yeah one of the MVPs today Blair Henley I would

say because that was a real lifesaver that interview and as you said much just before that she got a semi scoop I would say on the Mahatch cinearch of a situation oh yeah it's not the full scoop I'm not sure the full scoop is available at the moment because as we've established they're

being very coy but she did masterfully ask a winning Thomas Mahatch yes Matt you will get the chance to talk about Thomas Mahatch is tennis in a minute he was brilliant against the fashion quarter today but she asked Thomas Mahatch about the decision not to play mixed doubles with

Catarina Cinearcha for this tournament she kept it tennis but there was also a subtext stated it was very clever and he said that they had discussed playing together at this tournament but he had decided that he wanted to focus here on his singles and actually his men's doubles

partner Jun Ji-jen ended up getting injured so he's he's out of all doubles for this tournament and focusing on the singles seems to be going well because he's in to round three but he did say I hope we can play together again in the future which is by no means a confirmation of

of the relationship being back on if it was ever off but thinking through it I I can't imagine a break up scenario where you're considering playing mixed doubles together again in the future if they did break up on the Olympics I can imagine them saying it's the Olympics

we can't wait four years for this we have to we have to put our emotional trauma to one side and push through for the sake of gold and and boy did they but I don't I don't know I don't think you then continue to contemplate playing together on tour with your ex with your ex personally

am I reading too much into it if you are than I am because I read it the same way solid theory filled it's filled my cold heart lovely uh she also she also asked him about bringing short shorts back it's a great interview he described himself as the short short king

I do like how he is about to go on social media he really leans into it think his whole carooner doesn't wear short shorts he rides his shorts up he wears normal shorts David and yeah right he rides them up big time yeah wears them like a nappy that's a diaper for any for any American listeners um Thomas Mahatch's tennis mat is he going to break his grand slam round three duck in New York he better because he's got a good draw this is the time

to do it Thomas he's he's got the winner of goffan manorino which last time I looked was in a fourth set but like 2024 that is a good draw manorino has not won many matches at all breaking news it's Davy goffan okay that's just one seven six in the fourth well Davy goffan was five love up in the fifth set on Thomas Mahatch it winbled it yes and Mahatch came back to win oh my word that is tennis trauma oh dear so good luck Davy goffan putting that behind you when you play the same opponent again

now obviously you could read it the other way and say like he was in a winning position in that match but I think this is the time Thomas Mahatch who actually hadn't had brilliant form in singles coming into this has really found his form and look Sebastian Corda was a bit compromised today he clearly wasn't physically a hundred percent he was wearing a sleeve and he got a massage on his sort of elbow

area and and bit more tape applied and there was a there was a 15 or 20 minute period in the middle of this match where he could not make a forehand but either side of that it was closer and Mahatch came up in he came up trumps in like big moments which is something that he often struggles with

but end of the first set he turned it on end of the third set he turned it on and there was a jumping forehand winner at one stage which is one of his signature shots and we actually ran into a friend of the pod John who had been watching Mahatch and was like does he always play like that

and I was like yes he was like yes I've been telling you the word is getting out there like he is just so good to watch and I have already cleared a spot in my calendar on on Monday for the best player in the world against possibly the actual best player in the world

Thomas Mahatch against Carlos Alcarez I know Alcarez has got Jack Draper to go through and well I'm not a grand as unskilled as as we speak right now oh yes sure gosh this could age terribly but I just think that would be such a fun shot making time if Mahatch plays Alcarez and

big time yeah I'm into it moving on to the official best player in the world Yannick's in a looked like it today six four six love six two over Alex Mikkelsen a young American who's who's much touted I think I don't I'm sure he's better than he was able to show today

Sinner was doing that hand-coffing thing you know it it was tough for Alex Mikkelsen today and Sinner was really really happy with his level it was clear that it was about it was clear from what he said today and he continues to be very forthcoming and straightforward and talkative impress I

continue to be very impressed by him it was clear that Tuesday was one to just get out of the way and today he was able to play tennis not that it's not still on his mind he he talked a lot about you know in kind of in response to Caroline Garcia's post yesterday that we talked about in

yesterday's pod and also Karen Hashanov's post about some some of the haters coming at him following his defeat to Dan Evans he was asked a little bit about that and his approach to social media whether it's changed since you know last Monday when when all of the the news about his

his suspensions before being cleared of wrongdoing came out and he said it kind of has changed my attitude to social media I mean I do get the impression he's always had a pretty controlled healthy relationship with social media and that's not a judgment on people that don't have a

healthy relationship with it I I struggle with that as much as as much as anybody I think but I do get the impression he's he's generally got it pretty under control but he he said he's taken a further step back since since all this this news became public and he talked about you know

just really trying to focus on perspective there is a bigger world out there than tennis and there is a bigger world out there than social media it is it is not the real world and I know that you know we all know that but we also all do get lost in it so I think you reminders of that are I'm really

important it was it was it was good to hear him talking that way but again he repeated the line that he gave in the pre-tournament press conference about finding out who his friends are big time he said the last few months for him have been part of the experience of growing up he said I wish

it hadn't happened this way and I wouldn't wish this on anyone but I am becoming a better person because of it yeah yeah I think it is one of those I mean just on a on a much reduced level when talking to Jack Draper he said similar things about the forerior around his match point in

Cincinnati the other week and yeah I think that's it I think these players are having to do everything in the public eye and if in his case he was doing it out of the public eye but knowing that it was going to come out and and that he was going to have to deal with those consequences now

I know some people will be less charitable towards him and maybe may think I'm being overly kind or or protective of him in that regard but I and listen he he did have this in his system and he deserved to lose those points as a result of it but I I absolutely recognize that it is not easy

to handle what these players are into handle there are great upsides it's a great life in many ways but it's also something that the vast majority of us cannot relate to and and and it's not easy for them to find people to tell them what to expect they've got to live it and experience it

and figure it figure it out for themselves the question I put to Yannick Senna in his press conference today was about Nick Kirios who is here working for ESPN I don't know if he's working for for other broadcasts as as well I know at other grand sums this year he has been working for for multiple

outlets but he's certainly working for ESPN here and he's been doing on-call interviews not all of them but the highest profile ones have been done by Nick Kirios including a slightly awkward one with Coco Gough last night David you were courtside for that yeah I mean I don't know if my experience

of it would have been different if I'd have watched it on TV where you have perfect sound because of the quality of the microphones etc and if somebody speaks in a lower tone it picks them up and so forth but in the stadium it really didn't work at all he's he's so softly spoken really

he doesn't know how to do it I mean you know the assumption that because somebody's was good at tennis or is good at tennis that if you give them a mic and and they do an interview that they exactly know how to do it and to how to get the crowd involved and what touch points to make

I'm sure he's great at taking feedback though David well yeah I can imagine but it's just an assumption that they can do it and some can some brilliant at it Mary Carillo's I've had a broadcaster an interviewer than she was a player I mean Pam Schreiber is really good at

it there are many others that are I do career I mean his commentary sensation his interview is the Australian opener amazing but you know these people work at it and they're also naturally good at it too they're naturally good communicators in that way not that Kirios has got nothing

going from in that regard I think that I've heard him give Punder truth that has been good in the past this on court interviews isn't a totally separate skill it she was excellent she turned it into into decent answers I didn't think he was very good I also do wonder if there is a question

here of you know is everybody gonna feel comfortable being interviewed by Nick Kirios is that question being asked did the players have any say in who they're interviewed by maybe they shouldn't and that would be a slippery slope if players got to request to their interview by

but equally it does feel like there should be some sort of capacity for boundary setting now I haven't heard anything about any players not wanting to be interviewed by him but this was something that I asked Yannick Sinner about today because Nick Kirios has been tweeting and continues

to tweet extremely inflammatory things about Yannick Sinner you know he's he's replying to random items on Twitter taking the opportunity to to call him a cheat you know just just one reply here to some some random who asks who who they who they would prefer their children to take as a role

model between Kirios or Sinner he said probably the one that has integrity and doesn't cheat his childhood dream and the clean athlete he says you know this is this is a batshit internet stuff from from Nick Kirios so I just wondered if Yannick Sinner is mind mapped a scenario where

Nick Kirios interviews him and my goodness me he dealt with this question well because there was quite a laugh from him you know I got the impression it had occurred to him that that might happen but I also got the impression so he laughed when you asked the question he laughed when I asked the question it not not at me kind of a a knowing laugh and like I I'm interpreting here I felt like this answer was a lot about what he didn't say and how he said what he did say but my interpretation

is this that he had thought through the scenario but written off the possibility of it happening because Nick Kirios is a coward bullies our cowards Nick Kirios doesn't want to be in the situation of interviewing Yannick Sinner because I think he knows and I think Yannick Sinner knows

they would put him away that he would run rings around him who's smarter out of Yannick Sinner and Nick Kirios Yannick Sinner it's not going to happen and it's not not going to happen because of Yannick Sinner is my feeling his answer was basically for me to say I'm living in Nick Kirios' head rent

free but he ain't in mind interesting I mean it you know a couple a couple of other saggers that Nick Kirios has had his sort of disputes in the past when I think of Novak Jokovic when he when he said he wanted to he said he wanted to do his his old throwing the

heart celebration in his face if they ever played each other again and and when he called Kasperu he said he said I'd rather watch paint dry than watch you play he said to him on Twitter now he's cosy and on up to them and every single opportunity now listen people change people

accept that they were wrong maybe but what was that then I just sort of think okay where's been the accepting that they were wrong yeah well I agree I mean I I thought Yannick Sinner's reaction was exactly what everybody's reaction to Nick Kirios on social media and the world to be

which is just to laugh and be like he's not a serious person why are we taking him so seriously he's in a relevance yeah which actually slightly makes me think that he's not even really thought about the possibility that Kirios is interviewing him I don't actually think he's giving

Kirios much of a thought at all I do agree but then I do then think about the Daring K-hill element of it and I wonder if it's something that they've sort of joked about over dinner or I can't be I say that because Daring K-hill is also working for ESPN here and I imagine that's pretty

awkward yeah but I could also imagine that maybe they don't want to you know put that in Sinner's mind it might you know that might be something that the team is is dealing with it I wonder if you'd relish it though I suspect he wouldn't I think because he's so low key he doesn't want

any any hassle and I but I also think he could put him away in quite a low key way maybe he could but but I honestly think he's not bothered enough I think generally he his and their view well but they'll be they'll be kind of knowing looks maybe or they know they know each other knows

what's gone on but why make it why make it something what because as you said Kirios is having conversations basically with himself on Twitter at the moment so fine let him crack on Artifice has just lost David oh great

but I tell you what though Diallo is a opponent he is a fun time I enjoyed watching him I mean obviously I want to tell us more yeah I'll season two round three that these two I mean I didn't see the whole thing but Artifice was having to pull Ravett's hand a hat to stay with him I mean he did

one tweener in the tie break in the second set in a great passing shot I don't I don't know what sort of form he's in I suspect not great to be honest judging by his hardcore results this this summer but Diallo is is full of vibes I mean he's serving and volleying and hitting incredible

passing shots and engaging with the crowd you'll enjoy watching him he's a he's a good time okay um Yakimensik has a set point to take it to five against Tristan school Kate I wondered over to watch a bit of this match because Tristan school Kate was two sets love up on Yakimensik

and I have never heard of this guy never and that's a that's a memorable name um Australian 23 years old I think um anyway by the time I got there it was early stages of the third set school Kate uh two sets up and he looked exhausted so the fact that he's got this

fourth set into a tie break I'm finding very impressive but anyway we'll let you know the result of that I do think I mean he might not win today but I do think Yakimensik is the business do rate men's it keeps coming doesn't he I mean he was a year ago when he had his break out at this

tournament but he's just kept on having results I mean not quite day on a Schneider level but almost a bit similar in terms of how he he just keeps being a presence in a draw that makes himself unavoidable unavoidable unignorable yeah there's still some some rough edges there he makes

he makes more mistakes than he should be but I do think the raw materials are good from him um Mitoa Naldi a winner today the OG sensation Christopher O'Connell um or certainly one at the OG sensei he's the original no John Melman is the original oh I'm not sure oh definitely it was

John Melman who uh the Aussie radio guy called a sensation before he played Roger Federer in Melvin for sure and just around off a a good day for Aussie's Jordan Thompson a winner over Hubert Hurkatch I think that's his best ever Grand Slam win yeah first time getting a top 10 winner

of slam and um yeah he's 30 now I think Jordan Thompson but is playing the best tennis of his career I would say this year that he's won a lot of matches and look I think we all had Hubert Hurkatch on on upset watch this tournament given the fact that he's been told that he probably shouldn't be

playing until next year and and he is coming back from injury and he felt vulnerable and and Thompson's beaten him but like to beat him in straight sets is a really hard thing to do Hurkatch is so good at pinching sets and dragging matches out Thompson was pretty ruthless and

efficient today and and he's doing it all despite the despite the US open going woke and allowing people to allowing people to walk around it's how is he coping this is a reference to the Australian open introducing it for the first time yeah of this walking around between points was one of the

worst quotes of the year it's one of the worst takes there's been great though yeah Jordan Thompson accuses tennis officials of being woke of letting people walk about Alex Domenon also a winner today just the Australians yeah the Australians are coming and I I said it a couple of days ago I

didn't think Alex Domenon was fit so I'm I'm very impressed to see him in round three and would love to see him make the quarter final and kind of make up for I mean I know nothing can make up for the injustice really of what happened at Wimbledon but it would feel like some sort of

redemption and of course we now know as David mentioned in part one that it will be done Evans that Alex Domenon plays in round three for a place in round four and and as we also discussed in part one just massive opportunity for for those two and everybody else in that section

of the draw it's it's going to be mouth-wrenching for them so those matchups will be on Saturday in terms of what we have tomorrow or rather today because it's five past one in the morning a massive surprise when the Friday schedule dropped earlier on today at the time it was the shock of the day

bit of intensive of rather overtaken us because I was going to say that and also the fact that bitfist had as my beat so I was free of as tormo in about 45 minutes I also think that's a massive shock of the day because like how that match didn't last forever I think is up there without

creaselosing as a as a shock of the day morning but sure I get you logic yeah the shock being I mean we were all pretty certain weren't we the Shelton Tiafo would be night session tomorrow Friday night in New York I know it's a little bit a weekend and a lot of people will take tomorrow

off work but I've spoken to a few Americans today and they've all said that still for for TV for ESPN night is the slot tomorrow for sure and that is where you find Novak Djokovic and Alexey Popper in Djokovic getting the night session once again the day session is Coco Gough against Illinus Fittelina to start midday followed by Shelton against Tiafo night session is Popper in Djokovic to start and then Sabalanka Alexandrovic second on which I don't like that I really don't like

that much. They could be getting on at 11pm absolutely and it could be a very old vibe you know just just don't put a women's match on after a best of five set men's match I just don't think we should be doing that Armstrong is Risa against Bedossa to start Navara Kostya Kommissana fritz and then the night session is Kiesmertens and it's a very very so look it's an amazing schedule on Ash tomorrow isn't it like all four of those matches are cracking I just at least I get to

commentate on them. I swap them all around yeah quite frankly I would too yeah look maybe there's other stuff going on we don't know everything that goes into a schedule but I would like to try and find out how ESPN feel about feel about that maybe I'll make some inquiries tomorrow but that is that is Friday that's your day five at the US Open we'll be back of course Colors Algras won't be but we will be sorry Matt you looked a bit sad when I said that still dreaming of my Monday

Lana class we have top folks and executive producers they are Greg Chris Jamie and Jeff and we have some late night shout out from Matt we have Gabriela Henrichs dotty like Elena Gabriela Rousseau who's first on Armstrong tomorrow yeah very good we know and Gabriela Sabatini yeah all over it

Gabriela is from Sweden but lives in Switzerland oh and she says for a long time I always bragged that I played against Stefan Edberg in mixed doubles whoa that's cool why doesn't she anymore because having worked as a pilot for Swiss international airlines she had Federer and Merca

visiting in the cockpit on a flight to New York just before the US open and that is now her tennis go-to story I think yeah I prefer the Stefan Edberg but you know those are cool tennis stories Gabriela yeah that's that's gonna take some topping awesome love that thank you Gabriela

we've also got Mary Patcus hey hello Mary who is from freehold New Jersey like all the good people and Mary is she heard of Bruce Springsteen that's hope so we could look if your from freeholds and you haven't heard of Bruce Springsteen the only way you can get away with it is having a

man to a Nisimova's backhand and haven't seen Mary's backhand but I doubt it's as good as a man to a Nisimova's there what what else do we know about Mary that her tennis bucket list tournaments are Indian Wells Cincinnati and Monte Carlo and that she says that she hopes to see us

at the US open this year so well we're here well we're we're here you're not here keep your eyes peeled we hope to see you too Mary yeah where are you Mary like Mary Carrillo yeah there's only one Mary yeah well two tonight there's two thank you Mary apologies to Mary Piss and finally we have Kelsey

Turner I Kelsey and if that name rings a bell it does that is because Kelsey says that last year I told the story about getting Pam's autograph and having to be told who she was by my dad we prompted Pam to say that's me big with dad oh Kelsey it's one of my favorite ever podcast lines from Pam
