Hello and welcome to the tennis podcast, our second daily tennis podcast from the US Open 2024. There are less than 48 hours ago until the start of the final grand slam of this tennis season. And you find us in the media garden just outside the media center, round by the practice courts close to where fans gather, awaiting a glimpse of their fans.

They're the favorite players. They quite often stop and sign autographs there. So if you hear some crowd commotion, it is absolutely not for us. But it is one of our favorite places to record podcasts. We've spent many a year here. My mind always goes back to post US Open Final between Dan O'Mevedev and Raffaundead Al here, Catherine, which was sort of BM before Matt. And he was back home. Not me, you were alive. It was BMT before Matt traveling.

It was. Catherine and I did that podcast while drinking several honey juices. It was rather excellent. I wouldn't say no to honey juice right now. It hasn't been the bombshell news day that we were perhaps hoping for at the start of the day.

Has it, Matt? Some honey juices might help spice things up. And it's funny that David references 2019 because I always go back to 2019. And I believe Queens of 2019 as the bar for, well, we can do a podcast whenever because I believe we did a podcast that that Queens where there was no play at all. Like the whole day was canceled because of rain and yet we still did a pod. And I'm always like, well, we got through that. So we can pretty much get through anything.

That theory is being tested today because let me tell you not much has happened at the US Open today. No, I mean, that is, I mean, look, big names. If come through the media room, haven't they? We've had Colossal crowds. We've had Nova Jokovic. We've had Raining Wimbledon Champion Bob Orro Quacheek of it. We've had two time former champion Naomi Osaka. We've had Jack Draper and actually Jack Draper might have ended up giving us one of the biggest stories of the day.

But everybody's just sort of feeling quite good and quite happy and don't want to go any big revelations. Nobody's, you know, been living under the threat of a doping ban for the last four months. And I think that was newsworthy because there was a brief scare around midday when Carlos Alcarez rolled his ankle.

I don't even know if that's quite fair as a description. Did something to his ankle tweaked? Yes. While practicing and didn't actually continue with his practice, spoke to one Carlos Ferreiro, who David had seen before. We were even out of bed this morning. That's less weird than I've made it sound. Yes, I was in the local, the little supermarket, straight pharmacy. And I stood there. And I have to say I had another shower bag at this point.

I must have looked a right state, but I desperately needed some bin bags because that because our bin was overflowing. It's a default David Lord. Yes. I bet one Carlos Ferreiro looked pristine. He did. And he was, he was only about 830 in the morning. He walks past with his wife and his two very young kids. And I mean, he just sort of looked through the window and saw me and he was, oh, wait, wait. I don't know. Right. Quickly get behind the counter. And so nobody else could see me.

So, well, he obviously got himself over to flashy meadows then for practice with Carlos Alcarez. And I must admit, when the initial tweet came through and said, oh no, Carlos Alcarez rolled his ankle. I did think, oh, crikey, that's all we blame him need. I mean, the men's drawers barren enough as it is. And I don't need him being dumped out. Before the things even started. But anyway, as a sort of cooler head started to take over an actual video evidence surface, you looked at it.

And it really was just a little jarring of it. And he could not have been more reassuring about it in press. Could he? He said, he stopped out of a sense of precaution. He said, I think it's okay. Wasn't worried at all for my US Open Participation. He said. And he was also totally reassuring in a very Roger Federer-esque way about his lack of hardcore matches coming in. He said, it doesn't matter for me.

He said, I'd like more matches, but it doesn't affect me at all. It was very kind of you can get away with that because you'll call us Alcarez. But someone else saying that it sounds quite arrogant. But it's fine because it's you. And he also backed it up with evidence from the summer. Not hard courts, but he pointed out that he hadn't had that many matches on the clay and his preparation for Roland Garros hadn't been ideal. And then he said, that worked out okay.

And then the same at Wimbledon when he obviously had only played probably a couple of matches on the grass prior to Wimbledon. And then that worked out okay as well. So in his own way, he has actually sort of been a slam specialist this year.

Like outside of the summer, his results haven't been all that consistent or impressive on the rest of the tour. And obviously Indian Wales was great. But you know, he's had a lot of setbacks. But at the slams at the biggest events, he's been excellent obviously in the last couple of months.

And I think that has built up his confidence that means that he can come in here and put Cincinnati down to an extreme, you know, it was coming off the back of the Olympics, the conditions were crazy. He said it wasn't like tennis. I think he can write that off and come in here feeling pretty confident.

And I felt a little bit bad about the question that I put to Carlos Alcras because a large reason he go to an Alcras press conference is just for the vibes. He's not a quote machine. He's generally speaking, but it's always worth lapping up some Alcras vibes. But I did actually kind of ask him about bad vibes. I of course asked him about the Olympics. But I wanted to get out of him sort of how knew that disappointment and low felt for him.

He's never lost to Grand Sam Finis. He's only lost one five set match in his life. And you know, those tend to be the most heartbreaking losses, don't they? And we all saw and we described and analysed how heartbroken and shocked and gutted he was to lose that gold medal match to Novak Djokovic.

And yes, I think it was a new experience for him feeling that bad after a loss. But I also think it's going to end up being a positive for him because he's kind of got that experience out of the way in a match where he still came away with something.

He still came away with a silver medal and an achievement in itself which yes, having Grand Slam Final on your CV is an achievement. But when you've already won Grand Slam reaching a final doesn't you know, it's like your GCSE results. It drops off the CV, doesn't it as soon as you get your first job or your second job maybe.

And I you know, he I'm not saying he's never going to lose a Grand Sam Final but I he's just a sponge isn't he's learning from everything. So I think he will look back on the Olympics still as a positive experience because he came away with a silver medal. But he's also getting the positives of a negative experience if you like in the learnings from that you know, I don't think he was pleased with how he handled what was coming at him from Novak Djokovic in that final.

It would be that there was no handling it because Djokovic was so good that day but I still think he feels he could have handled that a lot better. He was he was shocked and and rocked on his heels that day and I also love that he said I don't know if I'm going to get another chance to fight for gold medal.

He said I hope so and I'll I'll fight for that but I'm taking nothing for granted and I really liked hearing that from somebody that has suffered relatively so few setbacks and such little strife in his career. I think it'd be easy for him to think, oh well everything's just going to always go my way because I'm Carlos Alcarez and I'm that good. Yeah and there's no telling physically what state he'll be in in three or four years time. So and it's good that he's realistic about that. Yeah it is.

But it strikes me that I've often thought of him as a rookie really somebody who's still so new on the scene but actually what are we into now is this is fourth US Open. If you think back to the 2021 edition where he had that incredible win over sits a pass and in the Radikano year and and then eventually won the title the following year.

It's still only three editions of this tournament but he is accumulating experience now and it just it feels like it's that is a big addition to his armoury almost. And not just a question of going through the motion he is soaking it up.

And just a final point on Alcarez while we're talking about him actually goes back to something we were talking about yesterday and something that came up after we finished recording the podcast yesterday David and it was in relation to Peter Lungerin who you paid beetroot tribute to yesterday.

We found out that he passed away yesterday morning was really sad news of the tennis world and he told the story about something Peter Lungerin has said about Federer's learning process his trajectory in terms of learning to volley. Yeah yeah yeah he said at the time because I this was very this was similarly early in Roger Federer's career even earlier but he'd been around for a couple of years maybe two and a half years but he hadn't won anything.

I mean this was pre-beating Pete Sanprousen at Wilmwelldon so you know Carl Sancarez you're looking at with four grand slam titles they were poles apart in terms of experience but it was already very clear with Federer that he had the raw material to be anything he wanted to be that's how it came across but when I

when I spoke to Peter Lungerin about about his volleying he said he you know at the start the truth is he absolutely hated to volley he said it was like there were sharks inside the service box. Cramble line he just didn't want to be in the forecord and he said so we really worked at it and worked at it and worked at it and now the sharks have gone.

And I remember think it because you know you see him such a pristine volleer in the latter stages and how he that was the the lion's share of his attack wasn't it was all about getting for him. And it seems so natural to him. Yeah. So to hear about how unnatural it felt to him at the start is. It definitely feels like of all those players.

Our crass feels like he's the one who's come out ready to go you know sort of showroom ready if you like for the tennis tour think of how Nadal added to his game over the years. Jockovich is just added on every level to serve the movement the approach the tactics the touch is it's it doesn't I'm not necessarily expecting that from our grass. I think it's more going to be how do you handle situations moments experiences the game itself it feels ready already.

Yeah and it just made me think about you know I know you were talking about what a natural alchras is at everything and how complete his game is and how exciting he is but. I just I don't think I can think of a place on the tennis court or a situation on the tennis court where he would ever feel like there are sharks circling. Like it all comes so naturally term as you say there's still learning to do in terms of experiences but in terms of the game.

Like it's a different kettle of fish even to Federer. Yeah it's always been the thing that. Pundits who've seen way more generations of the sport than I have have always said that he he seemed like the most complete. Young player that they'd ever seen and. Naturally gifted in all the different areas and. Yeah like it's it's really hard to argue with that and.

He was asked today in his press conference alchras about sort of what it is about his game that he thinks is the hardest for the opponents and he. He didn't say it in those exact terms but he did kind of say that element that. They don't know what's coming next like he's got so many options and. Because they don't know what's coming next he said he said something like they have to constantly fight to keep alive. Which which again the way he said it didn't sound quite so sort of menacing but.

He said I push my opponents to the absolute limit which again quite threatening and then a nice grin after he said it it was all classic alchras but. It's true like his ability to not only have all the shots but deploy them intelligently is extraordinary. I think we've seen when he's. Stressed maybe he he doesn't always do that that is a development and he can make I think sometimes he can.

His game can look a bit ragged and he can just go for too much and it can all get a little bit out of control. You know and you know I'm thinking. Mostly about kind of the two grand sam losses he's had against Alexander's very to be honest those are the ones where that's been most. I would say but he's getting better at that all the time and yeah like.

That's that's such an amazing quote from from Peter Lungren and it did make me think of alchra as is kind of the one who hasn't hasn't really had those sharks. So the other player and in fact they came in back to back into the main press conference room the other. Player that we were sort of edgily waiting for injury updates from was no match. Because of course there are these reports confirmed reports I think that he.

Bailed on a practice with whole arena yesterday there were some reports he had bailed on a practice today but I think those were road road back on but certainly yesterday. A joke of it should confirm that he did bail on a practice with some soreness well he put that all to bed I think today Matt is that how you felt being in that press conference I felt like. Okay injuries not a thing here really with no that job of it any he does tell us when it is doesn't he really he lets us know.

Exactly I think there may well be a little bit of soreness you know he. Hasn't played all that much on hard courts this year really has it if you if you think about it and all the different surface changes from. Clay to grass back to clay while also managing an injury I could imagine that maybe he's his his body isn't in absolute peak physical condition right now and given his his age as well I think you do start feeling things a little bit more but.

I don't think it's a worry for his tournament I think maybe it was just something that he's going to be managing through this tournament and he's so good at that. And you know generally I thought I was kind of expecting him to be a bit. Buzziya you know given that he's just won the Olympics which is and he said today again the greatest accomplishment in his career he's so proud of that and he actually walked out on the

Arthur Astadium for kids day wearing his gold medal he's he's brought it with him I'm here for that. Oh I might wear it every day. I'm going to wear it to bed. Got a new necklace guys.

But actually his his his pest conference was very much business face on game mode on there was there was one sort of joking moment where it was pointed out to him and something I've forgotten but it is quite interesting that no man has defended this this title since Federer in 2008 it's been a very long time and he's obviously looking to do that and he was asked sort of what do you need to do to change that and he's jokingly just said defend the title.

But there was other than that there was there was no breaking the the quake sort of steely face that he had on and yeah like I guess I was just maybe expected. He's just maybe expecting him to be a little bit more jovial posts post Olympics but perhaps perhaps that's a good sign in terms of like motivation he's like straight back on to the next thing.

I think he was very he was kind of his own version of buzz he wasn't he like he talked a lot about that gold medal and you know was prepared to put things in pretty definitive terms he said it was the greatest moment and achievement of my whole career.

He said it's the most intense emotions he's ever had on a tennis court he said prior to that kind of the proudest moment of his career was carrying the flag at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and only winning gold has has superseded that but he's he's very sincere and earnest about it is something about representing his country.

It almost comes with the heaviness I think as well as pride and happiness and all the rest of it but yeah he was he was happy to talk about the Olympics and that gold medal at great length he was also perfectly happy to be asked about the annex sinner situation he was very much being asked as a talisman of the ptpa.

And he said cases like this are the reason we founded the ptpa and he definitely used it as a sort of promo opportunity really for for the ptpa and what they're about and why they exist now I don't know if the ptpa is necessarily the answer to this question I don't I don't think they've always been brilliant.

Certainly in terms of communication and the the front end of things but I certainly think there's an opportunity for them here to make the case for a players union and why it's important and valuable and necessary.

And he sounded quite frustrated by the fact that the ptpa doesn't have yes the influence that he thinks it could and probably should have he said he wasn't going to go into that in that press conference but I think his hopes for the ptpa when when they formed those few years ago were far. And he was a little bit more grander than what they've actually been able to achieve so far but he did well he was pretty clear that he thinks that not all.

So doping cases are kind of necessarily treated the same and there was some sort of procedural element that needs to improve with these doping cases and he was and he was extending his sympathy to players who've been in similar situations and had to wait a long time for their cases to be resolved he didn't name check anyone specifically but that's who he was kind of talking about and yeah he clearly thinks that the system can be improved.

Yeah he talked about sort of lawyers and the financial element of it he said essentially said the ability to defend yourself in these cases shouldn't depend on your wealth and the funds that you have available to you which is a very interesting philosophical point because in legal cases in life it does it shouldn't I don't think.

Don't get me started on legal aid cuts I mean legal aid is a thing you're not left defenseless and unable to defend yourself at all but in terms of the quality of legal support that you'd have available to you there are have and have not an absolutely effects outcome so it's a very interesting philosophical question but it does feel like a moment of opportunity for the ptpa if they have the opportunity to be able to do that.

They have their act together enough to capitalize on it and I honestly don't know if they do but maybe we'll find out. Yeah yeah maybe this is what they've been waiting for to some degree and perhaps a player like Sinner is going to turn around and look at a union like that and see it's value a little bit more.

I mean obviously as you say he was independently financially wealthy enough to be able to sort things out himself get the best lawyers on the case immediately but he obviously felt a little uncomfortable that he knows that's not how it is for everybody and I mean it does feel like that that is something that should happen one day that there should be a proper players representative union

and whilst I think there are virtues to the ATP tour and the WZA tour it is it's never going to be completely satisfactory is it. Yeah I mean because of the conflict between the organization without conflicts of interest is for the betterment of the sport. The conflicts of interest of the issues is what's the issue here I think competing agendas in a very sort of top line kind of way.

Staying with the men's David while Matt and I were covering Jokovic and Alcharez you went to see and speak to Jack Draper. Who bless him gave us a new story on a slow day. Yeah I mean you may remember some months ago we had Wayne Ferrer as a guest on the tennis podcast when he just started working with Jack Draper and he was a few

of a few of about working with him. It did appear to be a sort of trial period but very much with the view to it being permanent and being a thing and he had a very clear idea of what he wanted Jack Draper the British number one to be doing with his game in the men's game. And that is to be all out of aggression and Draper seemed completely bought into that as well and frankly he did sort of say and this was one of the interesting things he said at the time.

It's not that that hasn't been said to me and it's not that I didn't know about it but it kind of took somebody with a gravitas of a Wayne Ferrer who's been a top 10 player and a coach of Francis Tiafo and other players to tell me into sort of say in a blunt fashion that's maybe really clock it. Well that alliance is over and it was something Simon Briggs reported in the telegraph is an exclusive for him news wise that they were not going to be carrying on together and yes Jack came to me.

And yes Jack came into a press conference today with many members of the media from Great Britain asking him about why and he said I just realized you know I only want to hear one voice. I don't want to and the one voice he wanted was James Trotman who he's been with for many many years he's very comfortable with him.

I do find that a little bit confusing personally I understand the point about only wanting one one voice and he said I'd never really tried the team set up before of having an entourage and when I did it I think the gist was he wasn't that keen on maybe hearing from two different voices. But given you've sort of admitted that it needed something more than you were getting before well now you appear to have gone back to the same thing.

So I'm and he was a place to say listen I've ended on good terms with Wayne we decided stay friends and I feel like I've taken a lot from him I have learned a lot and I mean bear in mind the guy won his first title with Wayne Ferrer just having joined the team. And I'm not saying cause and effect but that did happen that was in stuck guards then he follows it up the next week and beats Carlos Alcara's on grass the first guy to do it at all in the last year.

And okay results didn't follow he didn't back it up at Wimbledon he hasn't had amazing results all all summer long but I am a bit surprised really that it hasn't been given longer and another grand slam. And I wonder about going back to what you were sort of saying had got you to a certain level and seem to have plateaued. Now maybe he's taken what he needs from Ferrer and can kick on again but that doesn't seem automatically logical to me.

That's very interesting isn't it because two voices absolutely can work they just have to be the right two voices and the chemistry has to be there and I can absolutely see how it could not work if they're two sort of very separate voices but yeah I don't know what to make of that. And it also makes the future interesting because you know it makes you wonder whether he would bring on someone else in the future or whether he would have to part with James Trockman to go to a new coach.

And that like I feel like it would be beneficial for someone to come in and work in that environment in a way that Wimbledon Ferrer did you know necessarily want to ditch your coach that you've worked with for a long time and that you're comfortable with.

It seems to be a good example of how the to me to add someone to James Trockman fulfills the sort of prepared to travel week in week out pretty much role which which a lot of you know the super coach is super coach is very out of fashion term now isn't it I was reaching for another one.

But yeah let's do it super coaches they don't tend to do they and and I totally understand why players want the consistency and comfort blanket of a week in week out thing but you know I'm obviously thinking about Donavecicius set up with Nick and Pam and how well that works now it works because you know it's kind of like a marriage isn't it we get insight into the work that has to go in from the coaches to make that work and that's what I'm going to do.

I'm going to make that work and to make it harmonious. I don't think it just happens but does seem desirable if you can find a way to make it work.

I also what you said there about is is he open now we we didn't get explicitly into that in the follow conversation but you're kind of saying no aren't you if you're here. If he's saying I only want the one voice then yeah you I am a bit confused and look I really like Jack Draper it was noticeable when he when he walked into the it's a little gathering area it's not a proper interview room where

they've got an area I do they call it room four to six and what they mean is there are three round little round tables and their room four five and six and his two straws together and their partitioned off like you're just calling an area yeah and so there we were and there and he came up and he shook hands with every single person who turned up before we started you know real look you in the eye handshake hi how you doing good to see you several of us obviously we travel tennis

around he does know us I don't know him really well but he's I've always found him to be that I like that a lot sees you makes a point of interrupting his day to go over shake hands look you in the eye and wish you well and carry on his on his way it's just a professional politeness there's a politeness to him I I really like him and you know it was some it was

interesting to hear that but I but I do I do wonder I do wonder about where he goes next whether whether this is actually going to work out for and he's got a very tough first round draw here and Jun Ji-jen yeah so we'll see in terms of the women that came through the press conference room today we had no mere soccer this morning and Barbara Khrichikeva quite a lot later in the day who I really

enjoyed that Khrichikeva press conference I made it me too yeah she's she's really cool I think yeah and and she's she is cool but I feel like she's been rocked over the last couple of years by I guess she didn't know about this this world of being a big single star she was a big double star she won a lot but not many people took much notice of what she said or did really

when she wins the French Open and I mean as she was she was explaining there's been a lot more on her plate since winning Wimbledon than there was after winning the French Open it was quite an order of magnitude of of interest difference but but she had the experience

of the bubble or Khrichikeva a year or so ago of just kind of throwing out there that she wanted to be part of the conversation at the very top of the game you know and to kind of sort of use the expression I'd love to be part of a big four rather than just being a big three with Savileenko and Rebecca and her and and Egas Fiorenteck

because she then went on a really bad run that she kind of became a bit of a laughing stocker on social media and and in it was often brought up and I I think that that that hurt her yeah I think so too it's funny isn't it because there are some characters that now having been through that would be like see I told you

yeah I've got twice as many slams as you're back and I you laughed at me when I said it should be big four but who's laughing now but she's she's not that character no no and I mean my question to her was do you feel more relaxed coming into this tournament I know it's a big deal but you've already won Wimbledon so it's it's fine you know you can you can you can free we let enjoy this and maybe in and not and she's she sort of

denied it at the start of the answer and and she said I'm a perfectionist so I want to I want everything to be perfect if I can so I'm always judging how I'm going but actually you know maybe I do feel more comfortable calm calm and relaxed she said and and and it was it it came across in her in her vibe didn't it in her demeanor you say she's cool I think we're only getting to see that really now because she's not she does not scared and concerned about what why you asking me now what's coming

next she she doesn't didn't look like that today and maybe we're doing a better job of taking the time to get to know Bob or a crit cheek of her as well properly get to know her and it's one of the benefits of putting a player in the big press comment through putting a time down saying they're coming in making a fuss I'm making a big deal out of it and then everybody comes and then you you're in that position it's really worth being proactive in those positions

she I am one thing I am just bookmarking with crit cheek of her was her talking about the obligations that she had after winning Wimbledon that experience of going back home to the public getting all the angelation interviews photo shoots sponsor appearances all of that she said it was a lot she said I really enjoyed it but it was draining is what she said and if you're drained coming to New York that is a concern I think you know when when she needs to dig into a well how

deep is that well I am just slightly worried about that for on her part but equally it does feel like a really free hit for her here there there can be no more questions about Bob or a crit cheek of her she just one funny little line from it she was asked what her what the most fun thing about being a Wimbledon champion was David were you expecting her to say dancing with Carlos Alcoraz at the ball I wasn't that was she said yup and then she sort of the I mean it was one of those

like sometimes when we get asked who who's the best player to watch it close like at the low show the other day you're suddenly scrambling around for something because it can't be a thing or anything the name of tennis player problem yeah and I got the sense that she was sort of thinking oh I haven't really got an answer here but it turns out David she really did have an officer

it was Willie Weinbaum from the SPN that asked the question wasn't it and it was a great question and she responded to it really well but then after describing the the joy of dancing with Carlos Alcoraz at the ball she said of course you know you've seen the video and he said what video and she said it's all over Twitter how can you not have seen the video Paul will he was like oh I'll go and find

it and watch it sounds like will he has sets of excellent boundaries for himself isn't spending all of his life on Twitter we can all learn from that not chronically online we're fine bow yeah I really wanted to waste my question to Carlos Alcoraz asking how he felt about the dance but I asked a sensible question instead but maybe I'll ask at some point

throughout the fortnight watch this space folks know me a sauka came through press this morning nothing hugely of note really no not really there was I think a line that's probably important that kind of we keep the perspective with a sauka you know we spend a great kind of deal of our

live show actually talking about no me a sauka and you know the fact that the results haven't really been resulting as as she would say recently but she said that you know last year she was in the press conference room but not because she was playing you know she was hoping to come

back absolutely she was planning to come back but you know that is only a year ago and I think I remember something that she said at the time that she would come back was like I've fast tracked this really like it's you know people often very much talk about you know sort of

mothers coming back as being an inspiration and the sauka was was kind of like I don't you shouldn't be holding everyone to this standard you know I've been having extreme professionals around me who've allowed me to get back so quickly but it is still a very short space of time was only a year ago that she wasn't playing and I suppose I think she's got that perspective on her career right now like yes she's she's desperate for a result

and she said this place of all is the one where I think she maybe expects the most of herself and would most like to play well here but you know I think she also knows that she is she's in the middle of a process right now and that's important to remember when maybe she hasn't quite been having the results that we think she's capable of that she thinks she's capable of like it can still come if this is going to be a long

term comeback she's still very early in this and I think I think that was kind of an important reminder from her.

Important to remember when I'm cursing how crap a sarco rostre pengo turns out to be a couple of results in from events this week we still have the final in Monterey to come later on today that final between Lulu's son and and Linda Noskov a really cool see Lulu's son backing up what she did a Wimbledon but we have had the final in the land there's only one land guys it is a cleave land and the champion there is the American one called McCartney Kessler

she beat the top seed bitch was a dutch Meyer in the final 75 in the third now then full disclosure we didn't know who McCartney Kessler was before yesterday she's 25 years old the WTA website doesn't know much about her either but she is ranked inside the world's top 100 she's 98 in the world and she's just one of her first title which is amazing.

And I always find it quite interesting then to follow how they get on when they come here which court they're going to go on what's the reaction going to be can they bring it in I mean it's tough physically isn't it and sometimes emotionally when you've had a big moment like that but yeah now it's the time to get to know it hmm absolutely and we've also had the final in Winston-Salem the 80p250 there a title won by Lorenzo Sonnego six loves six three over Alex Mikkelsen in the final

great result for Sonnego I think he's now won titles on all surfaces which is which is no mean feat at all but it will be Alex Mikkelsen that steals the headlines for this because well quite frankly you should have been defaulted in the early stages of this final. Yeah by the way the rules are written the as as things down I mean he smashed a ball in frustration when he went love four down down the other end of the court and he hit it sort of slightly with a bit of under spin

and so you imagine it would sort of veer upwards and it went straight into the front row of the spectators at the far end and within within a split second you watch him hit the ball and then suddenly cover his head in an oh no what have I done kind of way because he hit that ball pretty hard

and the umpire came down we didn't see a proper replay of where the ball went we saw the umpire come down and go and speak to and check on whoever had been hit by the ball and really or that that is a it feels like an automatic default as the rules are written

you think of what know that jock of itch did here four years ago we've seen other cases like it um I mean the fact that it is a final and you've got a lot of people there here to see a final and at fall over you're saying end the match makes you wonder whether you need a different route

whether you need a different rule of some kind in order to punish the player this is what I was wondering having been involved in the David Nalbandian disqualification um in the final at Queens in 2012 is maybe the way around it is to punish retrospectively

so that people get a match but then the player absolutely gets hammered and maybe loses a tournament or a load of prize money or something like that subsequently I think I'd signed for that I mean once again it's the consistency is the issue here

and you need to know what the rule is and then keep to it I thought it was pretty binary the rule about smashing balls into crowds but apparently on the bait I mean this seems like one of the worst ones of this type that we've seen it does feel like there has been an optic in instances of this type this seems a pretty bad one and he's got a warning in carried on

like what are we doing here? I this throws everything up into the air I don't I don't understand the rules now No same I've seen just a little clip of the incident I haven't seen it all that closely but players cannot be hitting the ball aggressively into the crowd that that simply cannot be allowed to happen and I really think he should have been defaulted I I agree like it would absolutely suck for the people there in the crowd if they didn't get a final because of something like that

but I kind of still think that just because it's a final doesn't necessarily mean that you should have a different rule I wonder whether you think that that should be the rule generally I give it was the first round and there was a match to follow are you still saying that you should continue the match and that the punishment should come retrospectively or is it just the fact that it's a fine?

I mean look I suppose because it is a final and a showpiece it feels different and they haven't got anything else so maybe there's a doubles final but they haven't got lots of other things they could go to instead but you're right I mean is that fair is that right to do it like that

and I also and what happens Catherine if you actually really injure somebody you know you've got to you shouldn't be allowed to continue I don't think if you've actually you know done damage to someone but I also think if you make it a straight default

if you do anything even like that it just would stop happening yeah that's a fair point well exactly and I think it's the ultimate punishment is to be defaulted on the spot right and it's kind of it's kind of embarrassing to have to be defaulted from a

final like you're not going to be able to do it again all the fans that have bought those tickets not getting the final that's on you yeah you carry that just imagine that but there are implications you know a lot of tickets will have a it's a weather clause about you know

if you don't get a certain amount of play you get a refund I mean I don't know what you do all of that I mean I I have been on a tennis court with a full house of people booing me and the tournament director and not even David now ban you because they didn't know they didn't get a replay and really

get to see what he'd done so they just wonder why that while we've walked out stop the match and so we're literally getting booed happy days happy memories yeah how many how many times this has to happen it feels like someone's going to have to be really badly injured other than

Arno Gabbas for for something significant to be done about this Arno Gabbas was the the umpire they got hit by a very young Dennis Shapa Valov at the the Davis cut back in back in the day sorry sorry Dennis to be in that I'm sorry Shapo Shapo we got exposed to some

UTS last night you got nothing to say about that in fact David got exposed to UTS and pickle ball on the tally last night yeah back to back that was a that was a rough hour it's got its own channel here pickle ball forest hills that you'd use

yeah it is ultimate that ultimate not what my eyes were watching one sir I didn't know that you get one so many false it's just service era after service era I do love that the umpire has to call out the nicknames though game El Greco no they don't do games do they

nine eight nine eight El Greco who is that all with a straight face that is sits a pass okay and um my favorite was Casparude who is the iceman but um his name was being called the iceman like it was a surname which may be think of the the Chandler bit in friend Spider-Man it's not so

actually maybe I did have quite a lot of fun watching UTS last night but it is not ultimate and didn't want to be sweet so I love mom's man who got this qualified from one in the past and said it was a joke or something maybe the tour needs to have a look at UTS because they don't mind

it's qualified even though they say they don't have a code of conduct there's only one joke here oh tennis it was a pickle ball I mean I actually decided to watch a few points to sort of see if there was anything to it there isn't there certainly isn't as a spectator sport is that come on like

I don't want to disparage people that play pickleball and really enjoy it like that's that's fine don't try and force it on us as a spectator sport it's not all sports the spectator sports and that's fine pickleball is a crap spectacle there were quite a lot of spectators in the arena and none of

them were even applauding like when points were finished I didn't understand why it's quite hard to tell when a point was finished I found it was just sort of a continuous just like a training drill we had a very strange camera angle that can't normally be the pickleball camera angle but it was the

side off I don't even that the pickleball we're not going to get into it are we well I think we already have anyway shall I tell our lovely listeners about a travel in experiences yeah the tennis podcast during this us open is brought to you for another year in partnership with a travel and experiences we are thrilled that that is the case they really are your one stop shop for the Australian open it's the most convenient way to book your trip to Melbourne which ensures tennis fans
