Hi, this is Billie Jean King. This is Marion Bartotti. This is Bianca Andreescu. I'm Mats Villander. This is Mary Carrillo. This is Pam Shriver. This is Yannick Noah, and you're listening to the Tennis Podcast. Well, hello and welcome to the tennis podcast on day three of Roland Garros 2025. You find us all back at Tennis Podcast Towers, Paris. our first time recording a show here for this french open and we've all just eaten galette
And Guillemot Fice is on the telly. What could possibly be more French, David? No, this feels perfect. This feels like what we've been doing on this day for the last...
three, four years, and long may it continue. It's very enjoyable. It is quite deja vu, isn't it, with Gaël Monfils' night session in the first round last year against, I think, Sebastian Baez. He wasn't... he wasn't in quite the predicament that he finds himself in right now he's two sets to love down as we come to you uh and he he hurled himself into the Into the side hoardings in the first game and seems to have been sort of in in shock and presumably some discomfort ever since so
Still charting new territory, Gail Monfils, at, what, 38 years of age now? I've lost count of how old my feast is, to be honest, but that sounds about right, yeah. Yes, so we will keep you updated on soon-to-be-out-of-date Gamow Feast news over the course of this. show and the winner of this surely soon to be epic between morpheus and delian uh will play jack draper we'll talk about his first round match later in the show and
Also lurking in that section is a certain Joel Fonseca. It is one down, six to go for your man, David. I told you. I told you, he's that good. And my word was he good today. I have to say he's played like a dog's dinner for the last month, so I really wasn't expecting too much today. But the moment... Matt and I battled the crowds and took our extremely lucky seat and privileged position as a member of the media in that court number seven.
Honestly was far too small for the number of people that wanted to see this match because as well Fonseca's popularity and following He was there to remind us just how prodigiously talented he is. He was middling every ball. He wasn't missing the way he was against Fabian Marachan in Rome. I mean, he was missing every fourth ball in that match. This time, there was a security about his shot. There's a whiplash to the forehand, and poor old Hubert Herca...
The patterns just do not work for him because his strength is his backhand and getting to the net. Well, Monseca wasn't giving him backhands. He was just whiplashing the forehand cross court and this wobbly old forehand in response that Hercatch was trying to respond with. I mean, I think he hit the frame more than he hit the string. and it was flying along and all over the place.
I thought Fonseca was majestic today and electrifying and exciting. And yeah, we're on our way. The title is coming. I feel like we say poor old Hubert Hercatch quite a lot on this podcast. Yeah, we probably do to be honest and I think... I was asking David this on the walk back to Tennis Podcast Towers, actually. I wonder whether Hubert Hercatch, while playing in Geneva, knew his French Open draw.
or whether it was all about Geneva trying to win the title there. And look, I don't know. I think some players would be wired to just focus on the tournament they're playing. Others would definitely probably have an eye on... the French Open. I honestly don't know Hubert Hurk actually well enough to to know what he would do.
It's very difficult to know the mind of Huber Hercatch. If we know anything, we know that. Right, exactly. But, you know, imagine a scenario where he doesn't know his Ronan Garros draw. And then he loses that final in Geneva in such devastating fashion. You know, having been a breakup in that final set against Djokovic and his forehand falling apart in the final set tie break.
You know, like the worst bit of next news that he could have got was, oh, by the way, you're playing Joel Fonseca in round one of Roland Garros. Good luck with that. And like that. It had the feel of those vibes to it, his performance. Like, the Geneva final was still on his mind. And, oh, gosh, I've got to face this force. And it was a force.
many things about this match I will remember. Obviously, David's increasing joy and smugness as we're watching it I've greatly enjoyed being part of that vibe but also like I will remember just what David said there about how tactically spot-on Fonseca got this match, targeting the Hercatch forehand at every possible opportunity. But mostly I will remember the buzz around it, you know. We went outside of the media center probably a couple of hours before this match even started.
queues outside of Court 7 were so long that you couldn't actually really tell where they ended. Just a swarm of people around this court trying to take their seat. And as the match was going on, it came to my attention that directly behind where David and I were sitting, Night session ticket holders on Chattray ahead.
used their initiative and gone up to the top of Chatrier and there was just a wall of people standing up there on every available spot looking down on court seven years people on the stairwell just so they could get a glimpse of this match. It was absolutely the place to be. On court seven, people were sort of, I don't know, seven or eight deep, standing up, watching it. It was a new definition of standing room only for tennis. The buzz around the place was awesome.
I was so impressed with how Fonseca... thrived in that environment, and I think it weighed on her catches. He's the kind of player who once he makes a mistake or once things start going against him, he does get very, very down and a bit wingy. Wants to change the lady. Right. We were in that territory. He was arguing over a ball mark within seconds of the match starting. That is what I remember, the huge sense of occasion for a guy who...
I just find it so interesting. He hasn't done a lot yet and like everyone has just got Fonseca fever. It's absolutely... fascinating to be part of that and I absolutely love it can't get enough of it we had it in Australia as well we saw it in Miami and we're getting it again here it's it's really something Right, so he hasn't done a lot, but what he has done, David, is this before. Precisely this. He's beaten an established...
Top 10 player. Okay, Hubert Hercatch isn't in the top 10 at the moment. He's actually had a tough year. But, you know, he's beaten a player in this kind of bracket, in fact, better before. And he's done it with the sort of performance. that makes everybody stop and gasp and what you're just describing there it sounds like the same genre as what we experienced when we trooped out to the 1573 arena in Melbourne to watch Joel Fonseca's second round match.
against Lorenzo Sonico. And there were queues around the block for that, weren't there? And we were very unpopular, swanning into the media seats where I lasted about 40 roasting, sweltering minutes. in my newly purchased... I think that was a shopping trip where I bought David the koala hat. Correct. Good times. But anyway, he lost that match and he wasn't terrible, but he was nothing like what he'd been when he put in that electrifying performance to beat.
so will it be different this time personally i i think it will be different and mainly because i think People learn from experience and I think John Fantecker is the sort of character you can see even when we were in his press conference the other day I was really taken by how unflustered he was by the results and the performances that I've referenced when he hasn't been playing that well.
few weeks he was more high on his form in practice and the set the practice sets he'd won and he was very measured and calm about everything he he believes in his own game that much is clear it's not hype and hyperbole he leaves that to me But honestly, I think he will move on in this draw. I think he's going all the way, as I've said. I just feel like he is...
Learning on the job how to play grand slam tournaments and having played that one and had an incredible sort of Arrival followed by a bit of a disappointment. I think you I think you'll do better as a result I also think his next opponent, Pierre Ugebert, can't hurt him. Who can Pierre Ugebert hurt other than Benjamin Bonzi? Apparently Benjamin Bonzi. Goodness me, that was a good draw for both of them, wasn't it? It really was.
Like, you know, I remember after the Rublev match, you know, we pointed out that Rublev gave him the same ball all the time. And Sonnego has variety in his game, you know. very different backhand to forehand, for example, that Sonnego's got, and just generally a little bit more disruptive, a little bit harder to get into that rhythm that Fonseca had against Rublev and had today against Herca. But I just don't see how Pierre Gabert...
hurts Fonseca. I just don't see it. Like, there'll be the element of the crowd, you know, but Fonseca will have plenty of support as well. So, in fact, I think a lot of French people will probably... you know, like Fonseca as well. And I'd struggle to see how it would be that difficult for him. So I think that's a big, big difference as well from the Australian Open. I just think the draw is better here. There is something about him being a young Brazilian man here.
isn't there because Gustavo Quarton is so embedded in the DNA here and most of the people, you know, there's some Gen Zers that don't know, but most people... that are coming through the gates here, no. You know, he's the stuff of legend, isn't he? Those Brazilian shirts are the stuff of legend. Fonseca is going to be something special and the Brazilian fans that he brings with him are going to be something special everywhere around the world, but it's going to be most heightened.
Outside of Brazil here. I think yeah, I asked Diana who represents him as a PR manager and represented Gustavo Curtin back in the day, all those years ago, nearly 30 years ago now. David's big Brazilian contact. Yeah, she's a tennis podcast listener. Hi, Diana. But I asked her, Is this what it was like? She said no because it became like this she said, but it took
Gustavo Curtin to win Roland Garros for this to happen. Because there hadn't been a Gustavo Curtin before Gustavo Curtin. And he wasn't expected to do that, really. And you're right, there wasn't the tennis history. Brazil that he created and has kind of kept going really because Players that have followed have benefited from him, his presence. And now Fonsacker, the hype has come along, and now I think the country has its chance.
to get its teeth into another Gustavo curtain in its eyes. Fever is the right word, I think, for what it feels like Fonsacker fever. I asked him in the press conference the other day. Are you okay with all this? You know, it seems like a lot. And he just, he looked at me really quite quizzically as if he couldn't quite understand why I was asking that. Because it's fine. Which I loved, you know, and I felt slightly silly for asking it. That feels like a...
a precursor to a future press conference where he says, I love being number one. What are you talking about? It's great. I love being chased. Okay, so one down, six to go for Joel Fonsacker. The same is true. for Novak Djokovic. He beat Mackenzie McDonald today, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, and has Corentin Moutet next. Matt, you watched this one. I did, yes, and At the start of the match was tricky it was played in a part of the day where suddenly the
rain started coming down, the wind got up, and we know that Novak Djokovic does not like those conditions, and he made those feelings known to the umpire as soon as he possibly could I must say play didn't stop at any point today on the outside courts they kept playing through everything
And I suppose that is the question here. Should they have put the roof on? They did eventually under some pretty severe pressure from Novak Djokovic. They put the roof on and kept playing through the roof closing. And Djokovic said in his press conference that the supervisor was out telling him, saying, no, we're not going to put the roof on because they're playing everywhere else. And Djokovic said, well...
The rules should be different on Chattray because we've got the roof, you know, we can use it. Let's, it will be better for everyone in this stadium. Apparently some of the fans were singing Close the Roof because... they were not having a very good time in the windy and the rain and eventually they did do that in that first set and closed the roof but personally I'm in favour of Keeping the roof open if it's... pliable and it was pliable you know they didn't stop anywhere
I love Matt scrutinising a roof policy. Traditionalist Matt over there. Open the roofs. He just wants consistency in the policy. Yeah. Also, just like... The conditions change so much. especially on you know on chapter when that roof closes it just has a totally different feel and i just want the feel of the tournament kept if possible but anyway they did shut the roof and from then on Djokovic was you know a lot more content and
He played pretty well. He didn't have to play at his absolute best, but... He just sort of dissected, really, the game of Mackenzie McDonald, who can't really hurt him. 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, the same score on every set. lovely use of the drop shot from Djokovic you know so often he was going to that shot off he can hit it off the backhand off the forehand his understanding of
of the dimensions of the court is just absolutely incredible. And I know we, we say a lot, but yeah, a very, very comfortable win for, for Novak Djokovic and yeah, just, just what he needed you know he had he had quite a lot of tennis in his legs last week didn't he with playing in geneva coming into a slam playing the week before is not something he does that often so just to
get done and dusted in a couple of hours a pretty perfect first day I think for Djokovic it looked like a sort practice on the job practice to me for him like deploying the drop shot as much as he did um today because yeah it feels like something you've increasingly just gotta have in in your arsenal obviously he has it but
He's not the best at executing it under pressure historically, is he? And I think he maybe more than most needs it if he's going to win this title or if he's going to go deep because the blokes late 30s you know he he's incredibly fit still and he hits an incredible ball but he needs an ability he needs to be able to not only disrupt but end rally
quickly and not expend quite the energy that some of them are able to, like a Yannick Sinner, for instance. It is an increasing shot in the Arsenal of all players, but I think he... I said to Matt earlier today, I think he understands the geometry of a tennis court better than anybody on the planet. And it's just something that's developed. I mean, he's an incredibly smart guy anyway, isn't he? It's 20 years in the making. He understands where you need to put that ball.
We lost the 11 seed, Daniel Medvedev, today in an absolutely glorious hot mess of a match. This is my favorite match of the tournament so far. I can't explain it. I loved it. And you wouldn't have said that going into today because I left here and you said, where are you going, Matt? And I said, well, I may pop by Norrie Medvedev. And it was... I said Norrie? Yeah.
Each to their own. You did and got into it. Each to their own, but generally I don't seek out Cam Norrie's matches. She didn't get into the one point slam initially until four seconds in. You went full one point slam. I'm not. I love it. I'm not too big to do a full 180. In four seconds. And I did that today. I loved this tennis match. We, David, trooped out there to Simone Mathieu.
Basically because we thought we were going to get Egy Medvedev. We saw the screen, we got in. Medvedev is a set down. We looked at the screen. He looked totally disheveled and like he was... on the edge, barbling. So we thought, let's get out there and see this close up. I thought I was going for the Medvedev sort of implosion show but actually I just loved it as a tennis match it was
Quite weird. It had echoes of Tommy Paul and Elmer Moller about it and two players with... good backhands and extremely odd technique on the forehand possibly even more so than Tommy Paul and Elmer Moller and both of them not great at generating pace in incredibly slow conditions it was drizzling for for quite long portions of this match and cold and and windy and Medvedev who we knew was ill from his pre-tournament media but he was snotting into a towel intermittently um but
Bizarrely, this wasn't about Medvedev melting down at all. Yes, he went two sets of love down in this match, but he was actually extremely dialed in, I thought. And once he started... On the comeback trail, I felt quite secure in him coming all the way back. But maybe I was thinking of old Medvedev, because actually what ended up happening, which was not quite a choke, but a significant tightening from Medvedev, he served for the match.
tightened so much and his forehand just went from you know a surprisingly effective Ugly looking shot to a ghastly shot, you know, that's what happens when his arm tightens up. And he gets broken serving for the match and loses it 7-5 in the fifth. And this is the second consecutive slam where he has lost. after serving for the match. And it reminded me of what Taylor Fritz was talking about yesterday. The only way out is through. And, you know, he's just...
He's just not winning matches like this. He's not winning nearly as much as he used to. He's used to having... winning in his muscles isn't he people talk about winning becoming a habit and the muscle memory of winning he just doesn't have the amount of that that he's Used to. Yeah. He doesn't feel like a top player anymore. At the moment and that's not to say he can't rediscover that. I mean the ranking will tell you that the way he has been in the
top five and even higher for many years, this guy. He's been right there since sort of 2018, 2019. And here he was. I think deeply worryingly for him wrestling this match away from Cameron Norrie. I mean he was trying his heart out in that second set that he lost. I thought he was done when I left that court after the second set. Sure enough, get back for lunch.
And he's won the third set, sixth one. He's starting to race through the fourth set. Fifth set, he's got it under control. Never lost to this guy before. Serving for the match, I'd have paid a lot of you a lot of money if you'd have offered me a bet I don't bet, but you know So I was convinced that there's no trouble here And his game deserted him. I mean, it was truly comical tennis because both of them were so anxious.
Some of the shot selections. Shot selections and executions. I mean, even the match point itself where... I mean Medvedev has played the weirdest looking drop shot cross court that I think is going out and it somehow catches the edge of the line Norrie comes in just pokes it down the line with the entire court left for Medvedev to just paddle a forehand into
I could have made that, right? If I'm not nervous, I could have made that. Well, some of the time. He ballooned his forehand into the backstop. I mean it didn't even back. And it's just gone. The game is gone at the important moments. Because, I mean, he still hits a beautiful ball in a rally in the middle of a match. I mean, the conditions were so heavy. It was horrible for them both, really. but i mean just a classic example of the type of match it was it was
beautifully ugly. And then suddenly the celebration from Norrie when he throws the racket up in the air and even he got that wrong and it went over the other side of the net and almost hit Medvedev accidentally. It was like a thrilling club match. And honestly, I'm I'm not looking to Criticize them here. I I think that there were credit to themselves how hard how deep they dug but It was a weird few hours and I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it was real court craft out there.
I do think we now need to re-examine the Medvedev dishevelment rule. The more disheveled he looks, the more likely he is to win. That was peak dishevel out there. The serve doesn't work anymore, does it? It just doesn't get enough free points. and he's really good on him for trying to add the drop shot to his game, but it's not very good. And he just doesn't have the touch, does he? He doesn't have the dexterity.
But it's a shame, it's a shame for him to be fading in relevance because You know, for lots of reasons... useful i think for the sport to have him as a relevant force but it was a big win for cam cam nori that because boys he had a a tough tough couple of years. Matt, let's talk Yakub Mensik. and Alexandra Muller. Matt's been wiser with us. And the madness, the scenes out there for this. A four-set win for Mensik. Tell us about the madness.
Yeah, it came to my attention that this one was getting really interesting while I was on Chatrier watching Djokovic, doing a bit of work up in those media seats, which are just a nice place to watch tennis. and focus on a bit of work as well.
But I thought, God, I need... I have FOMO. You know, I was like, I need to get eyes on Muller men's shit because I'm hearing that it's great. You know, the barge was popping off. But I knew there was no chance I'd really... get out there so I just got it up on the stream and I joined the match in the middle of the third set I'd split the first two sets
Muller, obviously, fresh off his win over Zverev in Hamburg, generally is an improving player, I think. He's had quite a good year, comfortable on the clay. It was a tough draw for Mensik, I think, in the first round. especially, you know, with the crowd as well behind Muller. And this was as crowd I've seen at Rodon Garros. Was it the sort of crowd that would make Amelie Maresmo ban alcohol?
For sure. She would probably want to ban all of the individuals that were there. It was wonderful in many ways. It was absolutely electric. You know, there would have been some people watching that thinking it went over the line, probably. Like, it was so loud and so vociferous and so boisterous. Did Menchik think it went over the line?
Well, he was asked about that in press, wasn't he, David? He said that, I think, maybe it did, but at the same time, he clearly very much enjoyed himself. He very much enjoyed it. Yeah. Look, Muller got into a position in that third set where he served for the set. And this was really when it... Popped off and here's that expression again because frankly, I think men say There's some serious gamesmanship in that game. Tell me everything. He lost the first point of the game.
and then completely interrupted the rhythm of the match by bringing the umpire down to check the court, you know, because, you know, is it playable kind of thing. But in the middle of the game, you know, Muller then hit a double fault. And then he did it again. Mensik started talking to the umpire again about the court. And the crowd were booing and, you know, getting right in his face. And at that point, he stayed pretty calm. Mensik, but...
Muller went, you know, he was completely thrown by this and he lost his game and Mensik broke back and ended up winning that third set. And at that point, he started conducting the crash. It's one of my favourite movies.
And they were, you know, they were booing him and he was just conducting them and they were booing louder. You mean literally with his hands? Yeah. Like a musical conductor? Like a conductor, like Novak Djokovic has done in the past. And it was, the most Novak Djokovic Match I've ever seen from someone not Novak Djokovic and it's so clear what we know that Novak Djokovic is his idol
We knew that, you know, for a while. And then going into the Miami final that they played, it was a big talking point. And you can just tell that he's watched Novak Djokovic. And he told me, didn't he, in the press cards. Absolutely. He said, I remember Novak. Imagining they were cheering for him even though it was all for his abundance and I remember thinking well I'm gonna do that then. Yeah, he took Nermat Djokovic's signature move
Which Novak Djokovic said he did in that Wimbledon final of 2019 when he beat Federer from two match points down. Maybe Djokovic's, you know, one of his most iconic wins. He took that move and he implemented it on court 14 today, did medsing. And then he had to battle through some physical problems in the fourth set. He was really struggling with his leg.
but stayed so composed. I've always thought he was composed. That's always been clear watching him and the way he beat Novak Djokovic in that Miami final really demonstrated that as well and he played so well in those tie breaks. And he needed that composure today. It was an absolutely crucial part of this win.
So, yeah, like a really, really impressive win, a big talking point from the day as well. You know, it ended up, I think, stimulating a lot of questions about, you know, the behaviour of the French crowd and his behaviour and, you know, all that kind of thing. Yeah, really, really impressive, like, to see a young player. He's still, he is really young, Mensik, but he's, he's dealt with that incredibly, you know. Mostly those Novak Djokovic wins have come, you know.
Later in his career, I know he's always had things with the crowd, Djokovic, but that real defiance in the face of a crowd has been such a characteristic of the latter half of Djokovic's career. But Mensek seems to have it already. Like, it's really, really impressive from him. And, yeah, it was quite the scene on Court 14. Perfect location for that match. He doesn't turn 20 until September. He's still a teenager.
I've got a lot of time for him. I've got real retrospective FOMO about that match. I can't believe nobody told me that was going on. Yeah, I don't know. I think we were doing admin at the time, David. You were speaking to Goff and Medvedev. No, I accidentally was adminning through the Medvedev press conference. Oh well. I went off to a bit of editing and then got distracted by this. It was all happening.
it was all popping off to quote matt roberts uh jack draper won in four sets against matteo bellucci um Good in the end, Draper. And I don't think there's much alarm about the fact that he won the first set. I mean, Bellucci... can put in a set of brilliance that can rock you on your heels. Yeah, he's sort of like credible Arthur Rinderknecht.
I mean, you know, he sort of wins a set and he's a bit of a nightmare and he's fun. He's better than Otto. Well, yeah, like I said, credible version. But I think the thing is, Draper did not enjoy those conditions. Heavy, cold. Nothing happening with his forehand off the court. You know, it still hits it well, but it just doesn't react off the court, his very heavily topspin forehand. Same thing was going on for Art of Feast yesterday.
When this weather warms up in a few days' time, those two are going to be lethal. The thing is, he didn't panic. He didn't panic. He got the job done. Bellucci played well. He was a good one. But Draper's increasingly carrying himself like a top player. Alexander Zverev on the same court, both these matches on Longland. He beat Lerner Tien, 3-3 and 3-Tien, you know, not a clay quarter at this stage of his career, I think it's safe to say. Yes, but a young.
for alexander zavaro who came from two sets down to beat francesco passaro today david david suddenly become a yes but a young guy every time i look over at him at the desk he's giving me updates on yes but a young that i That I didn't ask for. That's true. It's that match he played against Alcruz. Was it here last year? Yeah. There's something about him. He's got a really high ceiling.
in periods of matches and can worry top players. That's what that taught me. And then, look, I didn't see the match he played against Fonseca in Estrell a few weeks ago, but he beat him handily. And obviously, given Fonseca is going to win the French Open, you've got to take that seriously. So I like watching him and I like the fact that he's come all the way back from Two Sets Love Down. I wonder how much is left of him after that. It's not easy to do it. So we'll see.
Yeah, I do like Jesper De Jong and I'm kind of a bit... curious as to why he hasn't pushed on over the last year, but maybe this is the time. Last couple of kind of sad notes to end on from the men's side of things. Felix Auger alias Seam lost from... from two sets up for the second slam in a row, albeit to Matteo Arnaldi and the last time in Australia was to Alejandro Davidovich Fikina. So these are good players and tough draws.
But it is scar tissue for Felix Auger. With a serve and a forehand, he's got to be losing from two sets up. That is a tough situation. And Grigor Dimitrov retired today against Ethan Quinn after winning the first two sets, and that's his fourth retirement of the season. I mean, you could probably call it his fifth, really, because... That Monte Carlo match that he played against Alex de Menor that was...
you know, love and love and he was sort of a ghost out there. He said the only reason he played that much or continued playing it was because he just didn't want another retirement on his book. for the year because he was so conscious of how many times he'd retired well Here we go again. It's his sixth retirement since Wimbledon last year. It's a sad scene at the moment. He's the first player in the open era to retire from four straight slams.
It's absolutely brutal. Wimbledon last year against Medvedev, US Open last year against Tiafoe, Australian Open this year against Passaro, and then today against Quinn. non-calendar slam of retirements. Like, Russell. We got to see Coco Gough in action.
the first time today she was second on chatria she won comfortably two and two against olivia gadecki despite forgetting her tennis rackets or maybe because of forgetting her tennis rackets because she said in press afterwards that you know generally she feels really nervous before first round slam matches and actually that incident really kind of took her out of her head and And loosened her up.
Yeah, she said the person responsible for putting her rackets in her bag isn't here. And I was thinking, surely that's you. Well, we were sitting with Pam Shriver when... when we discovered this turn of events and she said, that's the coach's fault. Fast I find that fascinating. Yeah Yeah, I mean, and she did like point her bag at the team as though like, what have you done here? Like, I haven't got any rackets. But surely, I mean, the rackets are the heaviest thing in that bag, right?
So how can you pick up the bag and not think... You would have thought that you would notice if there were, I don't know, six rackets missing or so. Yeah, very, very bizarre. Tommy Pools. rock-bought-on-finance situation. I just don't understand it. It's like Francis Diafo forgot his rackets. I think it was Indian Wells earlier this year, and Coco Goff put on Instagram, oh, no, I can't believe I'm on the same list as Francis Diafo.
It makes a lot more sense to me that Francis Tiafoe did it than Coco Gauff. Yeah. Yeah, two and two over Gadecki. Not much to report, I don't think, from this match. I mean, it's a... Yeah, that's a tough one for Gadecki. Mira Andreva, four and three over Christina Bookshire in the opening match of the day over on Longlen, breaking your six-love-two-love curse. because actually I think by the time you arrived at this one
And Drava was a breakdown in the first set and in a bit of trouble. Yeah, she was a double breakdown. She was three love down, Andrava, in this. A really, really poor start from her. Just a slow start. I don't think it was anything more than that. Obviously something she'll want to avoid against better players. Sorry, Reggie. But
You know, once she found her groove in this match, she just had too much game for Bookshare. My only real point that I noted down about this was, you know, she was three love down. She got it back to four all. So still, you know, it was close, this first set. Bookshop had a great first point in that four-all game. And then Andreva hit a 120 mile an hour serve and a 116 mile an hour serve unreturned back to back. I just thought, wow, exactly that. Like, okay, her game hasn't been in great shape.
So far in this match, she's in a little bit of bother here. What's something that you would, like, love to have in this moment to get you out of a bit of trouble? A massive first serve, and she's got that now. Like, it's really developed that shot, especially this year.
And it just, it was a small moment in a pretty uneventful match, but I did just really, it took me aback because of, you know, sitting in those Longland Media seats, a big serve, you kind of feel it, you know, because you're kind of almost returning the serve yourself. You're so close to the core. I was rocked by both of them. Yeah, just really... a big improvement in her game I think this year and you know
She didn't need it today. She'd have won that match even without it, I think. But in that small moment when there was a little bit of trouble, she came up with those serves and that impressed me. And yeah, she ended up winning the second set pretty... straightforwardly you don't really think of her as a sort of 120 mile per hour server do you but then You also don't think of her as a sort of...
huge power player and actually I think we might need to start reframing that because okay you know her built her game is isn't built on that she has guile and court craft and you know all the comparisons to Martina Hingis but she's a different physical specimen to what she was. 12 months ago she is seriously imposing these days and obviously david you know that because You had a little chat with her today. It was Pam who first drew my attention earlier this year to the fact that
Actually, Mira Andreyf is really quite tall. She's grown a lot in the last couple of years since she first came on the circuit. And yeah, I met her today for the first time and that did strike me as well. look it's it's an interview we're going to be bringing you tomorrow and i gotta just tell you in
30 years of working in tennis, and I think I've enjoyed a short interview more than I did that today. She is great. That will be coming to Friends of the Tennis Podcast tomorrow, along with Matt's, the full edit. of Matt meets Amanda which i know people have been been waiting for and maybe one or two others as well we're doing our best but we will have a an extra show for you tomorrow and um yeah david's meeting with with mir andreva was extremely lovely
i got some some pictures of it today and she's just she's great isn't she she's she's an absolute credit to the sport and incidentally on the growing a few inches over the last couple of years, obviously you think, brilliant, of course, the more the better, the bigger, taller, faster, stronger.
That can be really different. You know, your whole centre of gravity changes as you grow. If you've developed your game... with one body and suddenly you've got a different body you know figure skaters quite often will have a whole career sort of at the age of 15 and then they'll have a growth spurt and their whole center of gravity changes and their jumping technique no longer works.
and they either have to retire or... totally come up with a new jumping technique or you know it's that makes total sense it's discombobulating isn't it to suddenly grow that much when you're an athlete and you're reliant on balance such a key part of it all. It's incredible how well she's ridden that wave. Matt, you went from Longland watching Andrava to one of the outside courts to watch. Hayley Baptiste and my understanding from WhatsApp is that you're a Hayley Baptiste guy now.
So I'm not surprised. I watched her on TV a few times and I was right into it. Yeah, exactly. I've had the TV experience and really enjoyed that. And today I got the... in-person live experience for the first time and it was fantastic. It was on that same Court 7 that Fonseca was on. There's a lot of Brazilian fans there for Hadash Myers. There's a really nice atmosphere to this one. And Baptiste had a lot of fans as well. So, you know, on both sides, really good support.
She's just a great watch. Such a fun game. She's got that combination of power and time. you know she can really rip the ball but she also throws in a lot of slice back hands a lot of drop shots comfortable coming forward, plays a lot of drop shot lob combos. If I close my eyes and think of this match, I'm seeing Hadash Maia running back, having just run forward to pick up the drop shot. She was driving her mad with that shot. She can flatten out the backhand.
just tries a lot of audacious swaggy things which i really really enjoy um there was a that was, Matt Fusserman came and joined me in the press seats and said that he's watched more of her than I have and she can get a bit tight in tight moments. I can imagine that because of this audacious game. It's hard to play like that when the pressure's on. So I was watching and wondering whether she could just close out this match, this lead that she built.
honestly she was just out playing hadash maya but it never really got Close we didn't really see her pressured in that way because she was just too good just had too much game I think Hadash Maia's not at her best, to be honest. She was a stronger player a couple of years ago. She's had a bit of a tough year, suffered a lot of heavy losses, and I think that's slightly... You know, it seems like it's an identity of confidence, maybe.
Still, like, just love what Hayley Baptiste brings to a tennis court. Like, really, really good watch. I just hope she can keep climbing the rankings because, yeah, she's a really, really good time. She plays now Hibino next week. You know, all due respect, she beat Bianca Andreescu in qualifying in Now Hibino, but you've got to call that a good opportunity for Hayley Baptiste to go around further. And I hope she does. I'd like to get the chance to go out and watch her, that is.
That's a great sell, Matt. You've done her proud there. Jessica Begula beat Anka Tadoni today very comfortably, 6-2. 6-4. We lost on Straboer, 7-6, 6-love. In fact, she was in control of that first set against Magdalena Frack and it all just fell away from her. And that second set was... It was extremely sad, really, to see Angela Burr as such a shadow of herself, and yet still she came into... press after that that loss and was a shining light was the only player really that is
properly taken a stand against the comments of Gilles Maureton yesterday that we reported on in the show. They were put again to a number of players today. none of them really had had anything to say or if they did you know they weren't prepared to in in these circumstances but on stripper said look my thoughts are the same as what i said last year it's still sad that we are still seeing this
I keep standing by my words. In Europe, it's unfortunate for women's sports, not for tennis, but in general. I hope whoever is making the decisions... I don't think they have daughters because I don't think they would want to treat their daughters like this. She says you know it's a bit ironic.
They don't show women's sport. They don't show women's tennis. And then they ask the question, yeah, but mostly they watch the men. Of course they watch the men more because you show men more. Everything goes together. It's a shame from the Federation, she says, a shame from Amazon Prime, who are the rights holders for the night session, for that night session match here in France and who we know. play a big part in the decision making about the matches that go in that start and she said
It's a shame that they made a contract like this. A lot of great players, they deserve to be there. One of the matches was Naomi Osaka and Paola Badosa. Such an unbelievable match. They were supposed to be there. Just like last year, Igor Svantek and Naomi Osaka were supposed to be there. A lot of great matches. They should have been there. I'm not sure what kind of fans Gilles Mauritain is talking about. I know I'm a fan and I would watch that match.
Nothing more to be said, is there? Thank goodness for Ons. And in better news for players kind of in a desperate search for form, Marketa von Drosheva. One today. Remember her, David? Yeah, about time. She's part of my fancy team. I've had no points from her till now. Anyway, better later than never. She beat Oksana. Seleka Matova, 4-4. It's her first Grand Slam win since Roland Garros last year.
Yeah, she's had a terrible time in injury, hasn't she? And, you know, wish her well. It's nice to see her back. Yes, so many people in our... newsletter, daily predictions went for Von Droschever to lose. It felt like sort of low-hanging fruit you know she hasn't played in a while she's she's you know probably you know you could pick her opponent and that would maybe still count as an upset Felt sensible but...
Never make von Droschva predictions. That is my personal rule. Like, never do it. You will fall into the trap. Sorry to all those people. I did warn them in the WhatsApp. But they did it and she won. Here we are. Folks, that's it for part two. We'll be back in part three to look ahead to day four. Bröd och skafferivaror från svensk Det är min sannått att värna oss. Tomorrow, this is what we have to look forward to. Chatrier starts with Paolini.
against Isla Tomljanovic, first up at midday. Then it's Fabian Marajan against Carlos Alcaraz. And then the final day session match, Emerita Karni against Igor Shviontek. Now... The night session on Chatrier tomorrow. Matt, talk us through the saga of tomorrow's Chatrier night session. Well, it was Pam Shriver actually who alerted me that the order of play was out because her WhatsApp was...
Popping off, maybe I'll use that phrase again So I checked and the night session was Ben Shelton against Hugo Gaston And, you know, that was the second night session slot for Ben Shelton. None for women, two for Shelton. And then next thing I know, that match has got a walkover next to it. Ben Shelton is
is already through to the third round, so suddenly there's no night session or there's only a men's walkover in the night session. So I just had images of the... of the officials backstage scrambling around trying to well, desperately find another men's match that they can put on the night session. And I think that's exactly what ended up happening, because about an hour later, something like that... Barrels were scraped. An hour later we saw that...
The night session is now Holger Runa against Emilio Nav. match of the day oh yeah it was it was an extremely funny turn of events look maybe i'm sure they'll put on a show but Yeah. Emilio Nava and Holga Runa last on Chatre tomorrow. Long Lens starts with Emilia Rango against Jung Chin Wen. Then Kasper Rude and Nuno Borges. Third on is Giovanni Mpeciperica against Demir Jumho. And finally Sabalenka, Rina Sabalenka against Jill Teichman. Teichman's a blaster in the past, isn't she?
Court Simone Mature is Lorenzo Mazzetti against Daniel Galan. Anna Bondar against Alina Svitolina, Matteo Giganti against Stefano Sitsipas and Elena Rabakina against the detented young American Eva Jovic. Court 14, Victoria Golubich and Amanda Anasimova kick things off tomorrow. I've turned down playing tennis in the morning so I can be... And a Samoa over at 11. And Golly Bitch, former backhand lister. Wow. Yeah, great backhand.
I'm there for the Ines Amaro. There's a list of one. Alise Ketsmanovic, second on, Fuchovic, Paul, Anne Schneider, Yastrzemska, Avalis and Victoria Mboko, open court seven tomorrow. That might be... That might be where I am. Karen Hashinov also on seven. Yelena Ostapenko, Francis Tiafoe. Donna Vekic against Bernardo Perez, second on court six. Daniel Collins is out there. Jenson Brooksby. and Sebastian Corder. Okay. We're ready for round two action.
Monfils, get Monfils might be ready for some round two. Do we need to get this show off the road so you can start singing the Marseillais, David? He's punching the air. I'm punching the air. Everybody's punching the air. Okay. hold your horses for a moment gail and david because we have a mascot for this show um and what a mascot this is this is a surprise gift
from Rachel, who is the owner of all of yesterday's pet mascots, the menagerie of mascots. Rachel, the owner of the menagerie, has gifted a pet mascot slot. to her neighbours Joel and Jeanie and their dog, Kaven. Joel and Jeannie, and presumably Kaven as well, don't know this is happening. So Rachel says she hopes they're listening now and are being surprised. And I hope the same. Rachel says Joel and Jeannie have one adorable terrier.
confirmed adorable, that they adopted from the local shelter during COVID. Taven loves to visit with our pack of dogs and also loves to see Stanley, who's really our fourth dog and not a cat. Our dogs Charlie and Clover love Jeannie and Joel and will take every opportunity to visit them in return. Animal friendships, folks. It's my absolute favourite thing. Can confirm. Yeah. Absolute favourite thing.
I mean, Kaven looks like he has so much personality. I've got like a mid-motion shot of him shaking his fur off in the snow. It's absolutely wonderful. And what a lovely thing, Rachel, to do a surprise pet mascot slot. for obviously some very special people and a very special dog in your life. So that's extremely lovely. Thank you. Thank you and hello to Phoebe, Maisie and Roger, our mascots, of course.
To Greg, Chris and Jeff, our top folks and executive producers. And Matt, we might be on our own for shout outs tonight because we've lost David to Gail Monfils. Well, we start with Chrissy. from Sydney. Like Chrissy Evert. Hi Chrissy. Yep, that's David Dunn. Thank you Chrissy. On to the next one. No. What do we know about Chrissy? Chrissy met us in Melbourne. Lovely stuff.
We love Melbourne and we generally love Chrissies. Vicky's mum is called Chrissie, Chrissie Everett is called Chrissie, they're all good ones. We've also got Rishi. We know Rishi. We know Rishi. We do. Who is originally from Pennsylvania, now lives in New York. Come to our live show, Rishi, 21st of August. Yeah. And thanks for being a tennis podcast, both Rishi and Chrissy.
Yeah. Yeah, we've met Rishi at Indian Wells and the New York Live show last year. Yeah, I've got a lot of mileage out of our photo with Rishi from Indian Wells. He's very good about being used for promo. so we appreciate you Rishi thank you And finally, we have Dana, who would like to give a shout out to her tennis mate, David. David O'Dell.
Good name. Good name. And you're going to like this even more, David. David is from Birmingham. Oh, now we're talking. Excellent. What's Gal Malfese doing serving a volley on a set point? Don't do that. Goodness sake. Sorry. Oh, that was a bit... Didn't Daniel Medvedev do that here? That was my tactic in the one-point slam. Daniel Medvedev's serve volleyed off a second serve match point down here. Yeah, it's a sitzer pass in the pandemic, I think. Yeah. What a memory.
to think that was a better Medvedev time. Yeah. David, who is David's friend that this is gifted by? Dana, like Hannah, not with a D. I love it when people do them as gifts. Lovely thing to do. Yeah, it's very, very heartwarming. We love Davids from Birmingham. They're our favourite. Absolutely. we've all gone silent at least do some commentary david Folks, we are proudly part of the tennis podcast. No, we are proudly. There are people kissing in the stands because they're so excited. Folks,
