Hi, this is Billie Jean King. This is Mary and Bartoli. I'm Matt Belander. This is Mary Carillo. This is Pam Shriver. This is Janik Noah and you're listening to the tennis podcast. Will Hello folks and welcome to tennis podcast towers Paris where it is a little after 11. 7 pm here in our lamp filled Haven in the desetti em Aron de Smoon of the French capital where it has been a thoroughly grim cold damp miserable day in Paris. And that was just my mood until about 5 pm.
And that is no exaggeration trust me folks, but then Eagish Viontech and Naomi Osaka stepped out onto the Philippe Chetri court a couple of four time Grand Slam champions. And they played one of the best second round Grand Slam matches that you will ever see Eagish Viontech beating Naomi Osaka 7 6 1 6 7 5 saving match point along the way in two hours and 57 minutes.
A match of the absolute highest order worthy of a Grand Slam final and if it had been a final, it would go down as one for the ages. It was on a soccer's racket. The tennis was there. She was a heavy arm and one point away from what we all decided sitting there in the Chattriot press seats and on very privileged position.
We decided at 5 2 in the decided that it would be the biggest result if a soccer pulled it off at the French open since Nadal's loss to Södling in 2009. But it wasn't to be and it wasn't to be because of that heavy arm and because of the world number one the imperious Eagish Viontech. But David for me and I hope this isn't too tight. This despite the result was still the biggest win of a Naomi Osaka's comeback by far.
Yeah, I think that's very well put and yeah, you gave me goosebumps with that with an intro Catherine because it really did sum up what we what we experienced for those few hours and pointed we need it. I'm not the dog's dinner of a day we'd had but and I thought it could be a good match. I didn't think it'd be anything like this good.
To see Naomi Osaka just reminds you what she's got. The woman that took on Serena Williams in New York and won with the most incredible movement and power and surf. She served out of a mind today and just kept Södling at bay whenever she needed to and really when she lost the first set a set she could have won. I thought she's probably likely to lose this straight forwardly from here and it was the total opposite.
I think you'll probably have a view on this but I think Sviontech was largely to a part of that second set as well her form dipped. But the decider the way it went. I mean the way that the Osaka just stepped up and the sound of the ball coming off her racket and the clean strikes both sides backhand winners down the line, four hand winners down the line.
Toe to toe stuff and then you got that test of the metal that test of what sort of stage you're at in trying to become the champion that Eugustriant tech currently is.
There's a muscle memory to that to winning to getting over the line and she did as you say she got that heavy arm just the just the wrong time because she got through a couple of really dicey moments with love service games and when you thought oh the pressure is going to be on her this time but in the end it was it was just it was a privilege to be there.
I was really hopeful that this would be a great occasion like I wanted to see Eugustriant tech go up against Naomi Osaka like that just sounds exciting. And I wasn't that hopeful that it would be a great match I have to say based on kind of everything we've seen from both of them during the Clay Court season based on how Naomi Osaka played at times in that first round.
I think the first thing that went in a circus favor today was the roof being on I do think those were better conditions generally for Osaka as such a pure ball striker that she is indoor conditions helps. But even so I still thought Eugustriant tech would would probably win quite comfortably and I thought Osaka came out playing really really well and yet even within that there was a period where she lost 12 points in a row.
Which tells you how well Eugustriant tech was playing right from the start and it probably should have been a pretty comfortable first set for Shpion tech on the score line but she she played a bad five points to lose serve from 4-3-40 love up and that just let Osaka in.
And then I really didn't know what way the first set was going to go and Eugustriant tech takes it on the tie break and exactly as David said at that moment I was expecting that this was then going to be three loves Fion tech in about five minutes and we would be thinking back on the set point that Osaka had in that first set.
And we'd be having a conversation saying there was some really good signs but she was still quite far away from Eugustriant tech you know that was what I was expecting and I just love it when a match goes in a direction that you're not expecting and no miss a just came out in that second set. Put the first set disappointment behind her and just started cracking winners all over the place for term winners for hand winners back and winners the lot.
And something she said in her press conference afterwards no miss a which I'm sure we'll get into because it was fascinating she said that after Madrid she spoke to her team and wondered whether she could be a top five player again you know Madrid was just just a few weeks away and she was having these thoughts.
And that's so interesting because kind of the thought I was having and the thought that came to me during this match was I thought this version of no miss a come might not ever come back and to think that maybe she was sort of having some of those thoughts as well just just a few weeks ago I think is quite interesting and it just all came flooding back to me how much I love seeing a striker tennis ball.
And we just saw it for three hours today and you know David sort of talk through the third set already but the momentum changes there were were so dramatic but. I'm sure we'll talk a lot about the winner here but I think exactly as you said Catherine like this could be a really big turning point for no miss a felt like even though she didn't win the match she won something today.
And it just makes me so excited for the rest of her comeback the rest of her season like now I'm starting to think that anything's possible because that was such a high level. It it really was she described it as a high level then she played in the previous incarnation of her career before her hiatus to have her daughter which was incredible she said I know the results aren't resulting at the moment but that doesn't mean the tennis.
Isn't isn't there and that's certainly what I saw today look we will talk about eager shuntek I know people are eager shuntek fans are probably screaming at us why are you talking about the winner will look.
The issue on the winning is something we talk about a lot and we will talk about it but I do think it's a sarcasm performance today is is the headline here it it was so I was blindsided by it actually I felt the same as Matt I had high hopes for a sense of occasion a sense of gladiatorial battle to heavy weights coming up against one another and I had hopes for a competitive set.
A competitive set followed by an eager shuntek level of comfort in victory and I just wasn't prepared for what we ended up seeing today and you know it's made me it's made me wonder if I'm a sort of emotionally avoidant because I was thinking oh my god I had absolutely no idea the extent to which I'd been missing no me Osaka I felt that on the court I felt that in the press conference room today I felt like.
How did I not know what a huge gaping hole she had left in my life for a couple of years because I need this and I need more of it it was electrifying today what she was what she was doing on the court and I think it's as much as it was agonizing watching her try to close that out two double faults in the 5-3 game serving for the match she had 5-2 love 30 on the shuntek serve and at 15-30.
She netted was at the backhand that she netted the short backhand. So look there are there are regrets there if you're looking for them but I think in context they're more forced than unforced just because of how little experience she's got recently had a little muscle memory of getting over the line and it should be said that from 5-3 she untanked 5-3 down in the decided she's going to get a shot.
She untanked just stopped making errors. She made three unforced errors in the final four games of the match and I actually think one of those was the error compilers were being a bit stingy. I'd have put it down as a as a force rather than an unforce so it wasn't all about a sarcasm getting heavy but it was on her racket.
She said she said I had a little cry afterwards but by the time she came in the press conference room and she was processing before our eyes wasn't she she said I feel okay now and that was clear wasn't it she she was she was almost pretty pumped by Nomeo Sarkis standards wasn't she and that was just
it was for the soul they would yeah she was already I asked to give the commitment she put into clay is she now looking to do something similar on grass obviously it's not as long a season but it's in not a comfortable service for service for she hasn't had good results and she said she was she was looking for she's been thinking about it for a while and what strikes me in the press conference room
is how clear minded she seems clear eyed content comfortable in her own skin out there now she pumped is a good word she I wrote down several words at the end of the match that she that she looks motivated she looks ambitious she looks excited by being a back as a tennis player but she also looks okay with it all and when I think of how she didn't look like that and you know I'm I'm halfway through Ben Rothenberg's book about it
and he talks about the struggles that she went through ups and downs and and pretty dramatic ups and downs in terms of how she felt with the weight of it all on her and trying to try to cope really and not only as a tennis player but as a human being she was clearly struggling
in life and we had a lot of we had all the issues in the the press conferences here a few years ago too and she didn't want to do press conferences and she didn't enjoy them and I understand that but it was so much deeper than that she had some pretty severe from what we
understand mental health problems and and they don't look from everything she said she seems to have learned how to how to cope with with life and and the first six months of her comeback make me feel like she's coping with being a tennis player too and that it's
an upward curve the stuff stuff to look forward to she's not dreading it dreading it it's not a grind it doesn't seem it's all fresh it's all new the stuff to learn she can't wait and I just I'm really happy for you know as a human being I'm just happy for
she's hungry isn't she she's so hungry for centuries success she's doing that balancing patience and humility with ravenousness which I love so much my favorite quote from that press conference and there were a lot to choose from her telling to
she mind you from the guardian who asked about her daily journal that she'd referenced in previous press conferences and whether she'd had the chance to write in it today she said she'd written I'm proud of you to herself in her journal that was amazing line she talked about how she's been working with the ballet coach to help with her movement she
was lovely visual that is and what I you know just to really interest an idea and referring to her movement as a dance absolutely it was fascinating and she said she's never felt so kind of in touch or in control with all the different moving parts of her body which is I've never I've never really heard a tennis player say that they would go to ballet for helping with with movement I mean maybe maybe other players have done it and it's just
something I don't know about but like there was a clear difference today in how she was moving and covering the court compared to compared to previous matches I was really worried I said the other day about how she want to be able to take a soccer off the court and like she did she want to did that quite a few times in this match and a lot of the times a soccer was there and on it and firing winners back and if she wasn't she was
sometimes digging in and just put in the wall back in difficult places like there was a clear improvement in that in that movement yeah and although a lot of the time she was dragged out of court she was only able to produce defensive shot she she had a lot of squash got slight squash squash shot sliced forehands didn't she sort of sliding out sliding out wide to the right and yeah they weren't your
winners from defensive positions but she on take went through a long period of that match where she was she was making enough errors that just getting extra balls back was was paying dividends for no mere soccer so yeah there was the moment in the in the press conference it was actually in the Japanese portion of the press conference but of course she
she answers the question and in answers the questions in English so it's always worth hanging around she was asked about the match point that she had had and she replied I'm not sure if I even had a match point and then she's told yeah you didn't she went oh that sucks and it was it was a perfect delivery it was lovely but no my my favorite quote from the whole press conference is when she said I went into the match fully believing I was going to win
because when we were previewing this match a couple of days ago when it was confirmed that it was on and David could let it all slip in the in a soccer press conference without risk of distressing her yeah I said I just wanted to see her strut out on the court like the four time Grand Slam champion that she is and puff out her chest and think I belong here I have a place on this court even on this court alongside
Eagish Viantech and that's what I saw today and I think that really helped to make the match fascinating because if this if this were a player who had not had the career that Namios soccer has had and yet was doing to Eagish Viantech what Namios soccer was doing I think there would have always been a moment where you thought oh something's something's going to break and this match is going to turn and she
will take over but because it's Namios soccer we know what she's capable of it meant that you kind of allowed yourself to believe that she could actually pull this off beating Eagish Viantech on her court because it's a soccer and we've seen her do these incredible things like it was so improbable as she said in her press conference another
great line she was pregnant at the at the French Open last year watching Eagish Viantech win the title and kind of dreaming that one day she would be back in the position to beat her like it's so improbable that she's here playing that well a year on and yet she was and because you've got all these memories of watching a soccer win big titles you think wow okay like she could pull this off and if if it were a player who didn't have her
results you might not have thought that but I think she just makes you believe that kind of anything's possible with her because of well because of what we've seen and because she's just passing that I test when you're watching her you just like this is a pretty much unstoppable force when she gets it right it's such a joy to watch and I really missed that some of the facial expressions Matt was making jumping out of his seat because it's the contrast it
like the two players you you're looking in a soccer player that is right there with Shrelntek, Rebecca and Savalenko when she's at a best right there and and we've yearned for the rivalries and suddenly you've got Savalenko and Shrelntek who've had this run of matches you've had matches involving Rebecca but we've been denied a side of the game
and we've been denied a side of Savalenko as part of that group over the years I think we've been denied the Ankara and Drescu is another one who I think could put it in place It's coming David it's coming You know potentially she certainly reached that level in 2019 it's a long time ago but who knows but just you know it's this stuff that you you yearned for as a tennis fan and we got to see in a slightly unlikely way today
and so it makes it almost more exciting. You asked her about Gras to take this. Yeah I'm just curious to know how how determined she is to have a go at that and try and conquer that it's such a short season and with the American hard courts not far beyond and obviously Olympics as well you'd wonder whether she might not bother
Well she certainly seems like she wants to bother. Yeah she said she wants to play Shrelntek on on heart didn't she said I want to play on my favourite surf And she said I'm targeting September for getting where I want to be with my comeback and my game and my fitness like September is quite a long way away to think that this is only a fraction of the way along the journey to her peak is a fearsome thought
Yeah and again it was in the Japanese portion of the press conference so a little bit tough to tell exactly what the sort of exchange was but it sounded a little bit like the Olympics was a bit of a curveball in her plans
She she full outside I've forgotten about the Olympics but I'm really excited. Like I think in her head you know now Gras as as she said to David like she is committed to you know that's one of the things that she said at the start of the year was a goal commit to Clay and Gras but then having to go back to Clay and back to this scene It's a nightmare for everyone isn't it I think it's totally forgivable to be like oh my god we've got to do that and then this again
We're going to be back at the same venue but I just I just lost here what but I also think she this was from one of her other press conferences I think she's looking forward to having an Olympics where she's not the center of attention you know she said she's looking forward to enjoying the entire event
Didn't say to did is she did her best to embrace it being about lighting the flame and everything and I'm glad she did that but it wasn't her No it wasn't her at all it was like clothes that clothes that didn't fit Yeah I mean I think it's this is validation for her isn't it that committing to something like she did with clay and really persevering
And staying positive even when the results aren't resulting is is worthwhile so she's done it that on clay there's absolutely no reason why the same can't happen with Gras So I'm glad she wasn't daunted by the prospect of kind of having to start that that process all over again and I'm just I'm giddy about it Me too I'm giddy about the prospect of it Gave me so many feels
Yeah me too it was absolutely brilliant it was like the universe sent it to us because 5pm today was a slightly dark place for not just us I think Pretty much everybody because by that point the the start time for the outside courts had been put back about seven times you know
The not before 2pm not before 3pm not before 4pm and they're not before 5pm and you go outside at 5pm and it's absolutely teeming it down still And you just go this ain't happening and and of course it inevitably all the play on the outside courts did get cancelled for the day
Soon after that there's a couple of areas of contra controversy pertaining to this match that I think we need to cover First of all I think what fiontec said in her speech to the crowd afterwards asking that they'd be more respectful and not call out during the point she referenced And the tension that the players feel and and the crowds having to have more awareness for that she mentioned the stakes for a play she mentioned the money that they're playing for
I'm interested in both your takes on this I think it was really misjudged but I also cut her some slack for that because it was a brain scap-scramble A drenalized moment I would hate to think what the sort of ludicrousness that I might come out within such a situation
However I do think she got that a bit wrong I thought the crowd were fine tonight there were a lot of kids in today We're going to talk about the crowd a little bit more in a moment and yeah there was the odd bit of calling out before serves and so on But there was nothing there was nothing the like of which David Goffan was referring to yesterday in his press conference he had a few things to say after his win over Giovanni and Pesci Perricard
The young French player he thought the crowd were aggressive and had become like a football crowd and it was all pretty pointed and unpleasant He said someone spat gum in his direction and he was very outspoken was was David Goffan
This wasn't that kind of crowd this was a giddy quite young and excitable crowd that every now and then yelled out at a slightly inopportune moment But I do think she might have just misjudged that Yeah I think she said it in a very respectful way and I think she addressed the crowd in a nice way
I didn't have a problem with sort of the actual words that she said and how she said that I do think just maybe in the moment it didn't feel quite right after that match to talk about the crowd in that way Because as you say it wasn't one of those matches where the crowd were massively interfering I think there was one call out during a rally which slightly put Shpiontech off
And there was a couple of times where the umpire did have to address the crowd but nothing out of the ordinary and as the Sarka said in her press conference she loved the crowd She felt like everyone was really excited and into it and that's what you want and I think it just sort of gives a little insight into Shpiontech's mindset out on the court I think it was in her head a bit and as you exactly as you say Catherine immediately having to go and give a speech
I'm sure that sometimes you do just want to offload some of the thoughts that are in your mind and it was clearly playing on her mind during the match So I can understand maybe in that sense why she ended up saying it but it is a bit of a shame that it becomes a talking point after such a great match like that where it didn't really feel like that big of an issue
She seemed to slightly regret in press conference the fact that she might have said something against the French crowd because she knows how the French crowd can react to that She wanted to have beef with them. She had the face of somebody that was thinking of checking her drawer and making sure she wasn't on course to meet any French players
Right. Yeah, which again I probably would have been too The other controversial aspect of this which again we really don't want to be a talking point after a match of this gloriousness But I'm afraid is the fact that the stadium the crowd was half empty for the duration of the match and it was pretty galling actually to see that David Yeah, it was pretty depressing actually for me I was where we're seated is right at the back of the stadium in the press seats there
We're just looking down on row up on row of empty seats and you look all around you I took a photo of it at the time it's just it is half empty And you're watching the world number one against a four time grand sam champion and it's just it's just it presses me really to see that and and angers me
And after the match I decided to go and take a photo of the night session crowd Just to just have a look just to compare I mean honestly I came into this tournament this time quite determined not to really bother myself with the whole night session thing
And how many women's matches were going to get played versus how many men's matches which by the way I think was has been what two or three out of 20 Something over the last two years but we've done that you know I was thinking we've we've been to amelie meris most press conferences We've we've we've grilled her about it we've tried to get answers we've tried to understand why won't you put women on the night session matches
When you're you're advertising those as the match of the day it's to me it's always been disrespectful and it is putting women immediately on the back foot in terms of trying to have a stage and be able to compete and and so forth Not that it should be a competition but if you're going to make it so then you're you're tying a one hand one arm behind the backs
And it's it's so it's always bothered us but we've done that the last two years I know people get fed up here and about it so I honestly just thought okay look it's it's a men's session that's the way it is I'm going to just treat it as that But tonight when I saw that half full crowd I just realized the unfairness of this the way this is scheduled because tonight it was Richard Gascay against Janik Sinner
And went up there took this photo not a seat spare because it's a completely new crowd who have seen no tennis all day they've just come with their ticket for the evening session And so they're going to make sure they're there because this is the one match they get to see for the money that they've spent Whereas in the afternoon people had already seen four and a half hours of tennis with Karen and Garcia against Sophia Kennen and then Carlos Alcoraz against Jesper D'Iong
And then outcome No Mi Saka and Eagish Fountain can some people might say well it's quite clear then people don't want to watch them as much that's why they're not there Well that's not the case it's the case that people have fatigued they've already had good value for their money for their ticket they've put the watch for an half hours And that's probably enough for them whereas if you just stuck No Mi Saka against Eagish Fountain taking the night session match
You'd have had that full crowd excited to watch the world number one against a four time grand Sam champion And that is the respect they deserved and some might say well it's three sets and etc and it who knows it might have been a very comfortable win for one of them and very quick Don't care, don't care, work it out so that you have another match after it if that's your concern that can be a doubles match as a sort of backup
But give these women the respect they deserve and I know that Eagish Fountain says well I don't want to play the night match I don't want to get to bed at midnight so I'm quite happy with an afternoon That's not the point the point is let women have an equal playing field on which to play this sport and be respected Don't create a product that is unable to accommodate equality if that's what you're saying all of these defenses about why women can't play in the night session
Okay we've created a product that you think is incompatible with equality unacceptable product what are you going to do about it And David I mean you've spoken brilliantly there but all I would say is if it is the case that people were leaving because they weren't bothered about women's tennis or about Naomi Osaka and Eagish Fountain
And then the response to that is to go okay well it's nothing to do with the quality of the product something is going wrong in the communication and the selling of the product and we are a part of that as a tournament so what are we going to do about it because people shouldn't be feeling that way Whichever way you look at it it's a bummer that it's half empty and by the way there are thousands of people outside who've seen no tennis all day because it's raining
Get them in get the night session crowd and if you want give them some extra you should speak to camera man Matthew David because he's got some very progressive and innovative ideas about seat filling in tennis He's on a one man mission one man mission unfortunately he's got a totally incomprehensible Twitter handles is very very difficult to find
And not as many followers as he deserves not no but if if if you out there are detective enough to find camera man Matthew on Twitter you will be rewarded with some really quite interesting ideas about how tennis can solve its empty seat problem so there you go Just a final like word on this match I think for Eagish Fiontech is obviously she won and now now progresses in this tournament I think a lot of interesting things come out of this match from her perspective
One of them being that you know sure again a player in this type of mold has has caused her some problems you know there were things that a soccer was doing which were The kind of things that Rebecca has done a Noskiver has done and Collins you know stepping in on second serve returns you know a soccer was creeping in towards Caroline Garcia
Levels at some point it was just really interesting to observe those big flat hits still able to cause Eagish Fiontech some problems and yet this is another example of Eagish Fiontech Managing to come through one of these matches you know we've we've spoken before about how she used to not win that many close matches well now she is winning them all the time she really is you know she won
What everyone sort of I think rightfully declared the match the year just a few weeks ago in Madrid in very similar circumstances saving match points there as well and she she's beaten Naomi Osaka here And I think she deserves an awful lot of credit for that and I think Charlie Acroche of the athletic put it pretty well on on Twitter you can kind of read it two ways
It's showing vulnerability that she's playing these sorts of matches or is it adding to her air of invincibility that she's kind of managing to win so many of them now I think that's a that's a really interesting question personally I think the more she wins the more it feels like it's adding to her invincibility a little bit and it's interesting now what what happens for the rest of this tournament I asked
She's on tech in impress whether she could compare this to Australia where honestly a very similar thing happened in the second round I think she came back from a big deficit in the in the third set in Melbourne to beat Danielle Collins and I remember thinking at the time well that's such a big moment she's come for a tough match like this I bet now she goes on and wins this tournament kind of thing she lost in the very next round to Noskiver
And kind of since then I've just had this little theory that I've been working on which I have said on the podcast like if she on tech starts a tournament not playing her very best tennis she doesn't necessarily find her very best tennis if she comes out laying down six to six one score line straight away first couple of rounds he tends to keep it up and win the tournament that's kind of been her pattern this season it happened in Australia it happened in Dubai
it happened in Miami where she played a tight match against Noskiver and then lost her Alexandra in the next round She took her she was good against Radikarnu but not like amazing and then she lost to Rebecca know in the next round So I just wonder now whether we find ourselves in a place where she on tech is playing another match like this in a few days time maybe not maybe it was just that good from Naomi Osaka
And I did think it was interesting how she on tech said that she expects to up her level because of the clay she says that in Australia she thought that she wouldn't because of the surface there But she is expecting more of herself in the next few rounds she actually started her press conference today saying that she wasn't quite in the zone in the first couple of sets she wasn't quite fully focused she obviously thinks that's something she can improve on going into the next round
And I just think it's going to be fascinating to see it like it's what we've always want to see players that we know put in new positions and now we've got Egas Fiantec at a Rolongaros where she's been properly tested on the brink of defeat in the first couple of rounds
And we've not really seen that before so to me it makes her tournament which I kind of thought she might just stroll to this title it makes her tournament all the more fascinating so I'm really into that side of things as well I'm really into you having a working theory It's working at the moment she might be back to shit all over it
She's leading by a set 6-2 and on serve one love in the second so that'll be completed tomorrow I would say all due respect to these players but it looks like it's not until a potential quarter final with either Daniel Collins or my kit at Von Drosheva although I'm going with Collins there because of
the loss to 6 love set before the rain came today can't see any names there that you would expect to trouble Shrinete you got potter pover, golly bitch, Ginu Wang and Victoria to Mova would be potential I'm going to have a fourth round opponents before a likely Daniel Collins quarter final so we will keep an eye on Matt's working theory I'm going to have a third round of events that will be completed tomorrow I would say all due respect to these players
I'm going to have a third round of events that will be completed tomorrow I would say all due respect to these players I'm going to have a third round of events that will be completed tomorrow I would say all due respect to these players I'm going to have a third round of events that will be completed tomorrow I would say all due respect to these players I'm going to have a third round of events that will be completed tomorrow I would say all due respect to these players
