This is Mary and Bartori. This is Bianca and dresser.

This is Mary Carrillo. This is Pam Shriver. This is Janik Noah and you're listening to the tennis podcast. Well, it is 1 o'clock in the morning here in Malaga. Matt Roberts and I are back at the hotel but the good news is we can have a lion tomorrow because the Billie Jean King Cup has been one, folks. Cool. The con.

Competition off because the Cup has been won by Sarah Irani with a underarm second serve on match point to Eagish Vionte. Which by the way she won, collapsing on her back to be congratulated by teammate Jasmine Paulini who sure did put a shift in tonight as did Eagish Vionte. The most incredible night of the day. I think it was just tennis. Matt, yes, resorted but we are buzzing. I'd had so much fun during that match. Like I didn't possibly think it could really get any better and then it did.

I don't think I've ever cried with laughter after a match point before I was in hysterics. It was absolutely sublime and surreal. I mean, I'm always on underarm serve watch with Sarah Irani. You're always on will she hit one under 60 miles per hour watch? Yes, she did. Didn't actually take that long though. She was the last player of the match to get her serve broken. Matt was monitoring all of these stats but she hadn't hit an underarm serve all match until match point and PS.

That match point came six five up in the second set after Italy had fought back from five one down in that set. They reeled off six games in a row. They looked down and out. Jasmine Paulini in particular five one down in that set looked seriously low on energy and very understandably so having lost a heart breaker quite frankly to Eagish Vionte.

In the singles just an hour or so earlier a grueling heart breaker at that. I just can't believe what we've seen tonight from Sarah Irani and Jasmine Paulini. It's incredible. It's it was truly one of the most fun tennis matches that I've ever watched live in a stadium. Like there were so many brilliant rallies.

So many decisive moments like swings of momentum. There was four games for Italy in a row at the end of the first set start of the second set and then five for Poland and then six for Italy. Absolutely astonishing effort from I mean everyone on the court but you know in particular. Eagish Vionte coming back from that singles to then play the doubles and above all Jasmine Paulini coming back from that singles loss to them win the doubles.

Like I can't get over the mental fortitude that that took like surely the last person Jasmine Paulini wanted to see who he was. She sees her again half an hour later and takes it to her and combined with Sarah Irani who look under on server side was also just absolutely magnificent in everything she did in that match other than that little lull where Italy did lose those five games in a row in Irani to go off.

Other than that I mean is she the best volunteer in the world right now like her hands at the net are just ridiculously good. The way she bodies up on the forehand and it always just drops within a foot of the baseline always and the slice she puts on the backhand volley is just the angles the cutoffs. Yeah her hands are really something to behold when when you watch it in person in particular in particular.

And you know there was so many times when she felt like was hitting the return as hard as she possibly could but she was hitting it at the on rushing Irani and Irani just had the hands to be able to cope with that. There was a period in the middle of the match where she on tech did manage to like find the return through the middle and that was really effective.

But generally like I was just so struck by the way that Irani just timed her forays to the net just to get herself to the net so that it kind of there was so many rallies that became Shriantev versus Paulini again from the back of the call except this time Paulini had a rally at the net as like cover and who could just step in and and help win the point for her like it was it was absolutely magnificent the whole thing.

And poor oldie Shriantev who had been prepared to die on the court for Poland I mean she pretty much did didn't she I don't think she really did anything wrong I don't think she could have done more quite frankly it wasn't a perfect performance there were there were dips and rolls in there but.

It was pretty good from Shriantev in that doubles pretty good I mean cover cover had more ups and downs than she she had the other night I thought and the downs were more extreme but even so I mean it's it's going to be a tough one to take for them but I can't point to any particular specific regrets for team Poland I think it's just one of those were.

Forciven nature over took them haric in a ranny took them over yeah I think I think they will have regrets because five one up in that second set like you've got to close that out you've got to you know you've got chances on your serve you you got chances on a ranny so you should take serving from actually in doubles. With with the cushion yeah you're right but. Then I also completely agree about like just once once a team gets momentum especially in a in a format where.

There's sudden death use it's very hard to stop it and Italy just grabbed that momentum and and their bench was just. And then they were getting the crowd involved as well you know there was there was people who definitely weren't usually celebrating like that who just sort of lost all their inhibitions because they were being conducted by the Italian bench who turned around and told them we need you now yeah which was really powerful.

It's really really powerful yeah so special I mean like we've spent you know seven minutes talking about this time we haven't even mentioned like like we may have had one of the best singles matches of the year like that's how good this tie was that it almost feels.

Secondary that singles because the doubles were so special but the singles was magnificent as well and also the fact that maybe this tie wasn't about either of those incredible matches and maybe it actually was decided by the fact that Poland possibly put the wrong player in for for the second string singles because.

It was it was clear pretty early wasn't it the Magdalene did not have it today didn't have it in her legs didn't have it in her soul just wasn't in the reserves and do cheer bronzetti playing in her first ever Billie Jean King Cup singles match just I was actually caught side during the Italian warm up ahead of this match and.

There's very limited time that they get on the actual court to practice ahead of time so Paulini and Lucia bronzetti were hitting together and that was what kind of gave the game away that bronzetti had had got the nod ahead of coach Eureto played a couple of days ago and she just looks so relaxed bronzetti and.

It looked like the judgment Paulini effect to me really like just being around her and being led by her and her setting the tone like I saw them come off the practice court together and it was just. Such a good vibe and I you know that's not scientific at all but it did give me a feeling of confidence in.

LeCi and that match I know there was a bit of a rally from Magdalene in the in the second set but that result felt signposted pretty early on and maybe actually that was where it was lost for Poland.

I think that's such a great point I think and also I think that really was an insight into the into how important like the captains role can be because they both had big decisions to make there and Tatiana Garbin switching up her team it was always going to be interesting because this was a tie where they probably knew deep down that they couldn't rely on their normal strategy which is just been Paulini.

Because she's going to face the against the on take and we'll talk much more about that match and apparently an incredible job but like she's still lost. So she had to do something and she could have stuck with coach here at her but she had a very bold pick to go with bronzetti who as you say had never played believe in King Cup singles match before and you know had played a few doubles matches but only over one one of them like by no means.

History was telling her to go with bronzetti but she's made a big call there and that's the really the most proactive I've seen bronzetti as a player like in the first half of that match I think she was helped by the fact that Magdalene was really really slow out of the blocks and Magdalene in this match reminded me of Andy Murray in the 2023 Australian open against Boutiste. So we had a couple of times when we had the cockinakis match and it took him an hour maybe to warm up.

Did you know I thought of the same exact same thing and it was like Magdalene okay you can sub out you can sub out the cockinakis match and sub in the Sari Sribes Torno match.

It was a similar ordeal that she was recovering from and she was slow on the ball she just looked exhausted she just didn't have the energy where bronzetti was just she was bringing it she was hitting it down the line really well and then suddenly from a double break up a set and a double break up was bronzetti seems to be absolutely cruising to the match suddenly the net had a had a

a spurts had a surge that brought her back into the match she started dictating I thought we were going to end up in a third set because Lynette did play well in that latter latter portion of the match she started doing all the things that we know she can do is an absolute transformation

but bronzetti did really really well to to steady and close out the tie break and win it and to and yeah I think it's as I say the role of the captain there has been really really important Garbina's got that selection right absolutely right you have to say

and David self isn't it the the Polish captain maybe just a little misjudgment perhaps of how ready Lynette was you know I talk the other day about the net press conference after after she'd won and it didn't feel like she'd won she seemed to it was a haunting experience how affected she was by a victory

and look magdalena Frank wasn't good the other day so it was a tough choice I can see why he maybe wanted to go with the player who had won a match you know I'm not saying it's bad cap can see by it and I'm sure there's loads going on behind the scenes that we're not that we're not privy to but

just the feel of magdalena after that sarah sriba's to all my win didn't really seem like she was ready for another match in the immediate after month and there's not much turn around time and she didn't seem ready today from the start even though she found it kind of during the match the start was always going to be so important against especially against the player who's inexperienced in this competition and it's tough isn't it because he'll he'll be judged by that decision because

the other decisions kind of make themselves don't they I mean eagish on take obviously I'd rather suspect eagish fjontek makes the call about who she wants to play doubles with I'm sure the captain has some kind of a role in that but I don't think it's team picking in the same way you know there was one big call here and with the benefit of hindsight obviously it definitely seems like the wrong one

let's do the talking about shriontek against palini in singles it was everything we wanted it to be everything we weren't quite sure it could be because these two players had met three times before today and two of them were before jasmine palini became the player that we now know her to be but she'd never won more than three games in a set in any of those three meetings and that of course includes the French open

final this year when when we thought palini played pretty well and still anyone three games so I guess the question is what was so different about today to their previous matches and what in the end won it for eagish fjontek I'll answer the second question first because somehow I think that's easier I think she on takes resilience one it there was a time not that long ago where she on take used to lose blowouts you know she used to be susceptible to losing quite heavily in straight

sets you know we we would often talk about is she winning too easily she's not she's not playing enough competitive matches well I think that narrative has been one of the big changes in eagish fjontek this season actually I think back she's won so many close matches you know go back to the collins match in Australia a sarcrata on garros a couple against noscava including one the other day you know the sabile

lankamack jim Madrid so many great gritty wins for me because fjontek and I think that resilience is almost gone up another level at the billy jing king cup this week and she had to fend off so many break points you know in that second set and the star of the third set palini was bringing it bringing it in a way that she never has against fjontek before and yet

you know that that's what she's doing in the back dog so deep because I don't think it was fjontek's best tennis by any means there were there were there were a lot of lot of moments where the forehand was all over the place a lot of short balls that she would miss kind of inexplicably but she's become a player who can win without her best and I think that's a really valuable valuable asset and I just I so admire it and I so admire egos fjontek for the week that she's had here you know with the

performance against chequier in the singles and doubles and here coming through against palini without her best tennis and look down the stretch there I thought of both playing brilliantly like the quality was good in this match I'm not saying that

she it wasn't it wasn't one way palini was suddenly able to play well against fjontek just because fjontek was a disaster like that that would have been an awkward situation it wasn't that there was plenty of brilliance from from a egos fjontek it wasn't her best but it was plenty of good

and good at the right time good good when she needed it good under pressure and it was fantastic and surprises such a wonderful thing to feel when you're watching a tennis match I think I thought I knew what this match was going to be and it wasn't like that at all and that's one of the

you learned your lesson the hard way I did yes tell everyone about how you underestimated judgment how leave me again that match start of all I don't know quarter past seven half seven something like that and there was a chance to go and eat just before it and I chance that I pointedly asked you out and I said no I'm going out on court because I don't want to miss any of this I'll eat between the singles and the doubles you know I'm assuming

you're going to win and then we're half an hour gap perfect eating time at this point today was my first day on site I had no idea where the restaurant was and I'm thinking okay well I feel like my hopes of eating a pretty tethered to Matt's hopes of eating so sure I'll go with his plan

well personally I think you could have found the restaurant by yourself turns out I could have yeah but then there I was two and a half hours later in a race against time to even get to the media restaurant before it closed in Spain

like I was potentially going to lose out to the media restaurant closing in Spain where things never close and you can eat at any time because two and a half hours later I was still watching should be on take against Paulini in the stadium and couldn't leave and yet was absolutely starving

in a contest between Jasmine Paulini and the tennis podcast Jasmine Paulini wins every time that much is certain and their favorites now to win the Billie Jean King Cup aren't they actually regardless of who they face in the final I would have thought yes I think so because

Paulini is the favourite in her singles match whoever she plays and then they're the favourites in the doubles and I think you know they've got an option now in Branzetti who's got a win got some confidence yeah they were really formidable team

and in fact at this moment in time their favourites to do the double Italy, Billie Jean King and Davis Cops and actually just on that in the Branzetti match the Italian Davis Cup team were there cheering her on from the sidelines with the with the rest of the Billie Jean King Cup team

oh brilliant yeah it was lovely really lovely seeing really just reaping the benefits of having the events in the same place I'd love to see more of that yeah and just to go back to the captains we were saying you know a story that I don't think we've actually talked about maybe a tall on the podcast certainly not recently is the fact that just after last years tournament where they reached the final Italy Tatiana Garbine revealed that she'd had a tumor

and at last years Billie Jean King Cup apparently the Italian team were you know we're really really looking after her and you know because they knew her health wasn't good but she wanted to be there that week for them and be the captain

but I think there is an incredible spirit in that team like they will do anything for their captain and she will do anything for them and I think it's just pretty powerful fortunately she's in much better health now Garbine but it was a real scare last year for her health scare

and yeah I think I think it really bomb did that team together and I don't think it's a coincidence that you know most of them are back this year and playing for her again and you know they're in back to back Billie Jean King Cup finals Italy it's amazing

while Paulini is the standout singles player obviously Aronnie is the star while Paulini is the standout singles player of course the standout player for that team just thinking back to what we were talking about last night with Radikanu and managing a player of clearly different

status within a team set up I don't think Paulini does have different status within that Italian team for it I was observing the two team benches and it was good energy on the Polish bench and they had a huge raft of very vocal Polish support behind them you know

it was seriously for Cypheras support but there was something different about it to the Italian team when Shiontek was on the court you could feel the evidence of that status you know it was harder for them to kind of there was less they cheered her winners but they did less sort of it's okay it's okay after her mistakes and I felt like that was a bit of a giveaway of the status difference I might be reading too much into that but and it's normal I think Paulini is probably the exception there

but it's worth noting about Paulini in contrast I think because that is a pretty incredible thing about her and I suspected or never changed even she won the calendar slam next year which I won't be writing on the table absolutely

I feel like Paulini has taken the kind of leap that we talk about in an absolutely ideal world for Australia and the Davis Cup Alex Dimonore would take like Alex Dimonore is such a reliable player for them but as a number one there's a lot of number ones that he's not going to beat

and I think that was Paulini last year you know she was really reliable but now as a number one she can okay she lost today in the singles but against Igor Shiontek and she pushed her like crazy there's so few players that you don't back her to beat and she's good at the doubles it just and she's on the same status as everyone else she's not this huge ego in the team in the way that Alex Dimonore isn't a perfect Davis Cup player because he'll give absolutely everything for his country

he knows that the competition is bigger than him and he's really really good Paulini is that but kind of with a higher ceiling now and like she's just incredible and I was so pleased for her because the transformation she's had has meant she's put herself into so many of these big matches but because of the players that she's kind of ended up running up against she's actually had a lot of heartbreak you know and she's had an amazing season an amazing rise and obviously the

you know the sort of the headline is obviously those two grand sam finals but she lost them both and it would just be brilliant if she were able to to actually caps cap this season with a big big big title I know she had to buy yeah and she's got the Olympic gold with a Rani yeah which is

you know obviously massive but sort of you know sort of conventional tennis event it feels like Paulini deserves to win one of the big ones this year yeah because there's been such a small call of higher that she hasn't beaten but that's cost her a little bit in the big matches yeah

within her year I just think she deserves a moment of it's all about it's all about and it's not not going to be all about her here because it's a team it's a team but yeah I'd just love that for her if she was if she were able to win this on on Wednesday well Matt is now in a situation where

guaranteed to win the Billie Jean King Cup is either sorry Rani and Jasmine Paulini Matt Faves yeah Victoria Kusmova Hritchukova Hritchukova Matt Fave or Team GB Matt's Matt's people he's in a good spot no notes folks that's part one we'll talk a little bit about GB again Slovakia after this

morning the bar is closed there is eerie silence around us and we have one more semifinal to look ahead to later on later on today it starts in a mere ten and a half hours GB against Slovakia for the chance to face Italy in the Billy Jean King Cup final what's going to happen

I'm back in G.B. I think I think the most likely outcome I mean I've been very wrong a lot of times this week but I think the most likely outcome is to now to Britain I think Radikana will beat wish a cover and I think that that's the that feels like sorry for

which could over fans out there and in here that that feels like the one most predictable single match results I know she'd a great the other day but it does feel like Radikana was going to get her on the move consistently and and French Cacauva is a similar player to the type that

Radikana was already played this week big clean hitters with weaker movement and Radikana was dealt with that well and is now sort of played in against that kind of opponent yeah and and there are match ups there are times when Radikana does look a little bit underpowered

you know she doesn't always generate her own pace that well she's got that kind of low ball speed on the forehand and I think there could be some moments where that looks the case where you think wow and she could cover having an impact here with her big ground strokes but I agree with you

I think Radikana is too too skillful you know she's she's such a talented player she's got so many shots at her disposal she's a great mover I think she'll win it I look maybe there's a scenario where Jan Rickover plays I don't know like I'm just putting that out

there might be a weird thing to do if if you know she lost her opening singles and once Cacauva won therefore I'm kind of assuming that they go with that but maybe they want a throw a rolling match maybe they want to throw a little bit of a curve ball in there get Britain thinking I don't

think it's a hundred percent guaranteed that when she could cover plays I think she will but you know it wouldn't it wouldn't be a huge shock if they went with this with the 17 year old and just tried to just tried to throw something a bit different a great Britain that they're not expecting

and and then you save when she could fresh for the doubles now you've obviously got to get to the doubles but that's where the second match comes in there's sort of singles between the number one players obviously Britain a backing bolter and bolters backing herself and she's been brilliant

but I think Slavakia back Shramkova like she's she's been she's won 19 of LR23 matches on the tour and and and and at this tournament like she is the real deal she's serious she's legit and you know both her and Bolter of one title since the US open so that's a that's a that's a close one I think that's the one that Slavakia will be targeting is trying to win to take it to the doubles and if it does go to the doubles it's pretty close

we just don't know with G.B. who would they even play? I don't know. I think Heather Watson and Olivia Nichols but I mean there's a Harriet Darts possibility yeah and there's sort of any combination there and I feel pretty confident that neither Bolton or Radikarni would play doubles.

I saw K.C.B. to play doubles at the United Cup earlier this year and it's she's a good singles fan she was in great form then so it wasn't terrible but she was clearly not a comfortable doubles player she's she'd never seen

Taylor Fritz's pace. She'd never seen Taylor Fritz's pace before and well I don't think I've really seen her Radikarni played play doubles in Sir Judy Murray joke here so I that's the only thing I feel pretty confident we wouldn't see in the doubles but beyond that I feel like

everything's everything's on the table for G.B. and it'd be fun to find out but I agree with you I think the single most likely outcome is a G.B. to an O victory yeah and I think I would be obviously very shocked if Slovakia win both singles that's that's that would be really shocking I'd be

pretty shocked if they win the number two singles so if they beat Radikarni I'd be pretty shocked I wouldn't be that shocked if Shramkova beats Bolton that's the one same I think she's you know you talked about Radikarni playing that sort of

player well Shramkova had a had a good run out in terms of like a bolt a type player against Collins you know a big flat hitter of the ball and she beat her now Bolton's been in better form than Collins and I think is playing better at the moment so that will be a tougher match for Shramkova but

I think it's beyond her reach beyond her capability she she she doesn't give very long or sort of impressive answers when you just sort of look at them on paper Shramkova but when you actually are in the interview room with her or you see her on the court there's a there's quite a fun edge to her

there's real confidence there real belief she talked about after after the win over Tom Yanovich said wow I was in the zone he said like I was against the US and like I am at the moment and like I hope to be in in a couple of days time and Savakia have beaten two grand Sam nations already they've beaten the US and they've beaten Australia and now they get the shot another one and for a for a smaller nation like that I don't think we can underestimate just how good

that feels and just how sort of galvanizing that is you know tennis is so heavily weighted towards the grand Sam nations I think if you come from one that isn't one of those you're constantly feeling almost injustices you know wild cars not that kind of thing all this stuff builds up in these sorts of competitions I think it's such a good point it hey it'll be a war before they get a pop at France because France lost their qualifier yeah tickle on me that

is an absolute catastrophe watch this space for for what happens to Julian Benito I think I know he's still kind of riding on the success of 2019 but that is coupled with what happened in April losing out to to GB on clay yeah that's a good test of fee for France just before we wrap up shall we

quickly cover ourselves from the potential for egg on our face tomorrow because this is our second podcast of the day the first one was a preview of the Davis Cup which you might have heard starts tomorrow and you might have heard that Falnardale is playing his final competitive tournament this week at the Davis Cup and obviously that was the the predominant topic of conversation in our Davis Cup preview podcast recorded earlier on today Matt and I went to the

Spanish team press conference this morning that was very much dominated by questions to Raphael Nadal and we had extensive chat on that pod about frankly whether Raphael Nadal will even feature on the court in this tie and most of that chat boiled down to discussion over whether he'll be picked in doubles because everything that we've heard suggested that singles was was frankly out of the question if Spain wanted to make legitimate competitive choices

and have a hope of winning this competition which is a sad thing to say about Raphael Nadal but but that's that's certainly what we saw at the Saudi Kings which is the last time we got the chance to watch Nadal play tennis and it it was backed up by what we've been hearing from people that have

seen practices just minor addendum is that some some people not us not are very own eyes but some people saw Nadal's practice this evening with Carlos Alcras and reported significant improvement they also reported that Alcras was quite rubbish it was it was apparently a practice set that

ended at four or yeah and in which Alcras was bad yeah yeah but a bit of parents thrown the possibility of Nadal playing singles out there again personally I still don't see it but agreed I think that's the perfect expression I don't see it but yeah I think that covers ourselves we covered

I think it's bad Alcras lost a birthday band as anzol imagine if so Alcras and Nadal play singles and both lose just a catastrophe isn't it go on Raphael you have a go at losing to Bartok van der Zandtskull look by the time you listen to

this you might know you might know who got picked what happens how it all shook up you might know how Raphael Nadal's career ended we might know this time tomorrow we will be back with a podcast to talk about it we'll be back with two podcasts tomorrow after the GB Slovakia tie in the afternoon

and after the Spain Netherlands Davis Cup tie in the evening we'll have David tomorrow no shout outs tonight because no David them's the rules we have Phoebe we have Phoebe of course big day for Phoebe tomorrow hello Phoebe how you feeling we have of course our mascots the dearly departed darwin we have Francis and we have Heider and Soma of course our trusty companions throughout this 2024 season we have Billy Jean King and Delana Kloss big big week for them and for
