Hi, this is Billie Jean King. This is Mary and Bartori. This is Bianca and Drasco. I'm Matt's Belander. This is Mary Carillo. This is Pam Shriver. This is Yannick Noah and you're listening to the tennis podcast. Hello and welcome to the tennis podcast on day four of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga. And that is exactly where you find us. Myself and Matt are both in Malaga. And we find ourselves Matt in a sort of podcast race with David Law.

Yes, two tennis podcasts are being recorded at the same time tonight. We're doing this one and David is recording one with Charlie Acquisher of the athletic about the ATP finals. It's a very weird situation. This is slightly weird situation, isn't it? We've done 1,311 podcasts. Well, this is either 1,311 or 1,312, depending on who wins the race. But I don't think we've ever been in this exact situation before. Who's podcast will be better?

Yeah, it's weird. And I'm sort of I'm looking forward to listening to David's David's pod later. I hope he's looking forward to listening to ours. We're buzzing a bit from the vibes of the tie that we've just watched. We've had two quarterfinals today, GB beating Canada, two rubbers, two nil and Slovakia beating Australia, two rubbers, two nil.

There's no decisive doubles today, but still plenty of dramas. So it will be GB and Slovakia to face off in Tuesday's semi final. We'll start with GB because that's that's the tie that we've watched most recently. And look, the scorelines here on the face of it don't don't look like there was much meat on the bones.

I'm around a car new beating Rebecca Marino, six love, seven five and Katie Bolter getting the job done to beat Laila Fernandez, six to six, but I think the weight and the significance of this win for for GB and the drama of those final moments for Katie Bolter where you could literally see that weight on her shoulder, well, not literally, but I felt like I could just, yeah, did make it a real vibe when she she ended up crossing that line and and getting the job done for team GB.

A really big significant job for team GB. Yeah, big time and actually the the buzz the vibe started before the tie. It was the busiest that the fans own had been all tournament, I would say so far. You had these these not economical scenes of the conflicting sets of fans. You had the Canadian fans who were who were very organised with their with their fan and they've got the big cardboard head cutouts of their players.

And they also have marched into the arena in a big long line chanting their songs, whereas the British fans was mostly sort of bloats in their twenties with bucket hats and beers. It was just quite a fun difference between the two sets of fans and it's a really big moment for Great Britain because yes, they reached the semi finals two years ago in Glasgow. So, you know, it's not completely unprecedented territory that they're in. But it feels totally different to me.

Well, why does it feel so different? Well, I think if we remember two years ago in Glasgow, they were only in as wild cards, you know, because they were hosting and they never really felt like a proper threat to be able to win that tournament. But I think genuinely you have to say that they are a threat to win this one. I think, you know, Anky Othavong said that in her press conferences that they're must their aim, that's their goal to win it.

Whereas I think a couple of years ago it was of course it was nice to think that they might be able to win it. But really it felt like kind of everyone was just there for a good time and you know, the vibes of the event. But this is serious. This is Great Britain trying to win the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time.

And with Radikano in the two, you know, David's kind of been saying it all week. That's such an advantage because she is the best player ranked in that number two position in terms of her upside, her potential. And Katie Bolton, the form that she's in is absolutely awesome as well. So I think beating us is defending champions. And the side of the draw that they're on, not being in that side with Paulinez, Italy and Shiontex, Poland.

Look, we'll talk more about Slovakia and they're an amazing story. But let's face it, Slovakia and the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup is a good opportunity and a good draw. And I think everyone knows that. Britain know that. And they're focused on the task at hand. And while we've been talking a lot about some epic matches this week, all of Britain's singles matches have been straight sets. You know, they've been playing a really high level both Radikano and Bolta.

So it really does feel like they have a chance in a way that you couldn't say that about a British Billie Jean King Cup team for many, many years. It's an interesting one from the, and Giorgio wrong team captain perspective, isn't it? Because although there's an awful lot more to team captaincy than just picking the team, the kind of the headline element to that role is picking the team.

And she doesn't really had to do any of that, yeah, has she? Because those singles players do pick themselves if they are fit. They're very obvious choices with their status and form at the moment. I don't quite know who they would pick for the doubles if it came to it. And I would like to find out, I'd like to see Amquirell von have to have to make a decision.

And but I do, you know, she's clearly doing a good job of managing the personalities in that team. And that's not to be overlooked, I don't think, because it must be diff. As much as they seem a very cohesive unit and the vibes seem good, there has to be challenges of managing a group of people where one person and I know Katie Bolter is elevated in status, particularly in the UK over the past couple years, but let's be real about this.

Emma Radikarni has a completely different status to everybody else on that team and that that comes with a lot of baggage, I think, in a team environment. There must be tricky moments in there that require some managing. And I know she's committed to the Billie Jean King Cup this year and she's talked about how good it's been for her both in France earlier in the year and now coming back from this injury to be able to be part of this team.

There have been times where Emma Radikarni has not played Billie Jean King Cup and not committed to it and that I think would have an effect on the group who kind of are committed to it in previous years. And we've all watched the Katie Bolter Harriet Dark Handshakes of the past on, you know, barely Handshakes, you know. Is the Bolter Dark Billie Jean King Cup teammates subplot being overlooked? Do we need to start putting it in the forefront?

Well, probably. I think we know that they're never going to be great friends and I think there was a lot of tension of their match at Wimbledon this year and dark one it. And I think that was very tough for Katie Bolter to cope with that and, you know, probably did lead to a little dip in form for a little while but we know how well she's picked up in this last month or so and she is in such brilliant form now.

But yeah, absolutely. The the easiest thing for Ankiyotha Vong Sofar has been picking the players. Absolutely. Radikarni Bolter, job done to add it to. But I'm sure there's a lot of very important, you know, man management going on behind the scenes.

Yeah, and that's a very important role for a captain as well. And look, I'm not saying the vibes look bad. They look good and that's why we're putting an emphasis on it because we know that it's difficult to get those vibes looking absolutely perfect as they seem to be kind of given given the history that is that is in that team and given the different statuses of the players as you say.

And getting the players wanting to play and committing to it, getting getting a Radikarni involved this year that that Ankiyotha Vong deserves credit for that as well doesn't she? I mean, look at what Harry Kane was saying this week about all the dropouts from the England squad in the nation's league and he said that wouldn't have happened under Garas, Southgate because that was something that he instilled in the team and suddenly that's dropped away with with his with his absence.

And I do think there is an element of Radikarni and Bolta both wanting to finish the job that they started in April. You know, that was such an impressive win kind of maybe more impressive than what they've done this week to be honest, you know, going to France, on clay and winning was awesome.

And they both played brilliant tennis, especially Radikarni. She was kind of the star in France, whereas here, you know, Bolta is in the number one position and, you know, probably she's been maybe I don't know them. I mean, they were both impressive today, but Bolta is obviously playing a higher caliber of opponent.

But I think they're both desperate to just keep it going just as I said, just finish what they started. And I think Ankehoth Vong has really used that good feeling that they built up in in April and is absolutely chuffed to be able to carry it through to now. Just on Canada, I mean Radikarni was the heavy favorite against Rebecca Marino, perhaps no surprises in that score line and, you know, perhaps Bolta beating Fernandez, not a huge surprise.

The performance though and the vibe from Fernandez was a bit of a shock to me. That was a tough watch actually for Layla Fernandez, who's these trademark is her pluck and her grit and her vibe. Evidence no more strongly than here last year to be such a shadow of herself at this competition. Which has always been her best. Exactly was quite a tough site actually.

It was. There was a portion of the match. I think Bolta won eight games in a row in the middle of it. And Fernandez had some of that trademark grit right at the end, you know, in terms of I felt like she was finally in the match in those closing stages and making Bolta a little bit nervous as well. But it was far from peak Fernandez, but I did think that grit was still there. The game though was in such a state. And I haven't quite realised that it was in a state.

And I'm still wondering whether it was an extreme one off. Like because I think I actually look back through some of her press conference transcripts to see whether she's been talking about her serve recently because her serve today was a disaster. I was startled watching her serve today. I watched that and I was like, wow, how has she been winning any tennis matches?

And in particular the ball toss, you know, one of my favourite graphics in tennis is when they show that one of like the ball toss grouping. The nest. Exactly. And like, I always think of Federer's nest. And how he can hit, you know, his serve from kind of the same ball toss, he can hit kind of any corner of the box. And there's very little differential in where he's throwing the ball up.

Well, Fernandez's grouping would have been absolutely all over the place. She was chasing her ball toss the whole match. Sometimes it was so bad she had to just, you know, let it drop and start again. But sometimes she would still hit it even though it was clearly in the wrong place.

Way too far in front of her, way too far to her left, way too far behind her. It was all sorts of different misses that she was having with that ball toss. And it really strikes me that her motion is very odd at the moment. She's very front onto the core. She's starting her throw from a very unnatural position. I think that's why it's going in all sorts of directions.

And as I said, I was looking through these transcripts and I could, I could find one from a few months ago where she, she said, look, the serve has been a problem for a couple of years. I think it's getting better. And she said, I think it's getting better since I've been working on it with my dad.

And I read that and I thought, okay, I'll have a look through her stats and her serving numbers and look, they're absolutely not always as bad as today. So I do think today was a bit of a, just a bad day at the office in terms of that serve. But it's a problem because it's not, it definitely used to be quite an effective shot for Fernandez. It was one something that we really commented on and noticed that despite her sight, it's like she did get quite a lot out of her serve.

Good width on it, didn't she? Absolutely. She's not swaying on it. Absolutely. She's swaying on it. Yeah. And today, every time she stepped to the line, it was anxious. Where's this ball toss going to go? Is it going to be a double-fold? And I just think that kind of affected her entire game. So yeah, like her serve definitely has been a bit of an issue for a few months. There have been some really bad serving performances, but also there have been some better ones.

I don't know whether to read like a huge amount into it, but it's definitely something that she's got to improve. I went back and watched highlights of her playing in 2021 at the US Open. I'm sure she reached the final to try and reassure myself that her serve wasn't always like that.

And it was completely different. I don't know whether the change in technique was originally injury enforced. She has really struggled. I think her biggest injury was that foot injury that she sustained at the French Open, I think in 2022. But there have been other injuries too. But if it's not injury enforced, I don't know why she would have changed the serve from what she had to what she has now.

I'm sure it's one of those things which just evolved in a bad change, a bad change reaction kind of away. And maybe some of the changes to technique, because she's, as you say, chasing the ball because the toss is totally in the wrong place. She's like she's having to contort her body in a weird way. It was a very odd watch today and tough because when I think back to Laila Fernandez at the 2021 US Open, I know Emma Radikarni was the story.

Well, because she won the thing and also because we were in Great Britain and it just swept up the country, but tennis wise, purely on the tennis. I remember that US Open for Laila Fernandez quite frankly. And of course here last year as well. So it was tough. And I thought it was really interesting something you texted during the match was like kind of like does Fernandez have the top level to live with Bolta.

And you were kind of saying you think Bolta's level is better right now. And I kind of thought, is it better than Laila Fernandez here last year? And is it better than Laila Fernandez at the US Open? No, but like certainly today it never felt like Fernandez was going to get to the level that Bolta was at. And like we talked about Fernandez being poor but Bolta was very good again.

I thought like she really is, you know, in shocking news, hitting the ball well, but like she really is. And like sometimes sometimes with Bolta she's she's hitting the ball well, but there's also a company by a lot of errors. Those are kind of under control at the moment. She seems really confident. She's coming up with other than maybe towards the very end of the match. But like when she needed it she often came up with some good, some good shots as well.

And yeah, I'm kind of overlooked maybe her form. Like I thought I kind of got swept up by the magic of the competition when you're here. You think, oh, it's Billie Jean King Cup. It's Laila Fernandez. Of course, like she's going to rise to the occasion, but Bolta has been in better form than Fernandez. And this this almost felt like a non Billie Jean King Cup match.

You know, like there weren't those little old elements. It was just Katie Bolta being in more control of her game right now than Laila Fernandez and in much better form. And the result was was pretty commanding and dominant from her. It was it was it was very impressive indeed from Katie Bolta and from Emma Radikarnu. They will play on Tuesday aiming to put team GB into a first Billie Jean King Cup final for 43 years. They will take on Slovakia and we'll talk about them after the break.

Welcome back to the tennis podcast where it's time Matt. Can't believe it's taken to part two. Well in many ways Matt it's taken six years. Fair point. It is time to talk about the artist formerly known as Victoria Kismover now known as Victoria. I'm stumbling over this because we have been informed that we've been mispronouncing. Victoria Kismover's new name.

Runcha Kovar. Okay. That's what we're going. But you but ten it. Avid tennis podcast fans will know her as Victoria Kismover and will know that Matt talent spotted her in 2018. Yeah, latter end of 2018 and in particular right at the start of 2019 my first Australian open when I had I'd seen two fairly new names reach the semi finals of Auckland. Victoria Kismover who I put through to my Australian open quarter finals in the predictions who the one I didn't put through was bank rent rescue.

Right. Well, it was just a long range bet is what it was. Matt Roberts bump took five and a half years almost six years. Let's go back to the start of the day. She beat Kimberl 756764 to put Slovakia one love up in this tie. Rebecca strumkova finishing off the job. I mean just taking I let them get to the cleaners quite frankly six 1662 water player Rebecca strumkova is so a convincing victory for Slovakia in the end.

I was I was shocked that French French cacover no no. Runcha cover. Runcha cover. I'm fumbling I'm fumbling your favorite bit here Matt or or something differently phrased. Runcha cover no. Yeah. Yeah. Tell me I was shocked when she was picked for singles. Were you. Were were we were the diehards. Those of us in the know.

Or so shocked. Yeah, I didn't have this in the models. Look, I think it wasn't a huge shock because there are other big singles option is a you know 17 year old like a very talented 17 year old.

Renata Yam recover who played the other day against Taylor Townsend and you know gave a great account of herself but lost and like it's not shocking I don't think then that the captain thinks right time for time for maybe a bit more experience and look as as much as Runcha cover has absolutely not really done anything on tour for several years now.

She has been plugging away at the Billie Jean King Cup for Slovakia and delivering just one she's now one 13 and her 16 singles matches in this competition and and the captain has been the captain through that whole time you know he's been the Slovakian captain since about 2009 I think.

So he has seen all of those performances and it doesn't surprise me that he you know I'm sure he thinks you and Rick of her is a great talent and prospect for the future but doesn't surprise me that much that right now he thinks I'm going to go with someone who he trusts and has delivered for her for him in in the past so.

I thought Yam recover probably did enough to warrant another another run out in the number two singles position but I wasn't like I didn't drop my phone when it came through but I was a little bit surprised but he knows he knows his stuff we surprise that she won always.

The thing is I do feel slightly bad about this because I've definitely abandoned her oh yeah it's been 18 months since you even mentioned her I really don't think I deserve much credit and yet the barge was going mad I still I still got tagged on Twitter even though I'm barely using Twitter anymore when she won like it is a thing.

She did well didn't she she was running out of gas she really she really did do well she isn't look the thing that always sort of just drew me to her when I first saw her play is she hits the living daylight out of tennis ball she strikes it so cleanly when she's in position and it's just it's just seducing you know it's just like you just you just I just love.

Sing players hit the ball like that and she did it for two and a half hours today like it was really impressive she said afterwards that she likes hitting the ball hard she says players have things that they're good at and things that they're not good at and she says I hit the ball hard so I don't have to run that much and that's always been the thing with her like her movement is clearly nowhere near good enough to live with the very best players in the world nowhere near.

But when she's in position and it's why she's really good doubles player you know it's why she played so well in that doubles the other night against the US she got less of the court to cover when she's in position she does strike the ball so well and this this match was on her racket over 30 winners 15 aces as well and she also showed great resilience because you know she she was in a position to win it into lost the second set.

Beroll had break points at the start of the third. Runchic over save them came up with a brilliant forehand passing shot to break and then just took over again with her big big ground strokes and yeah it's it's a really really impressive win for her.

And it's another two wins today with Gbins like it for teams that didn't get a buy in the first round I know we've had Italy win through only Italy but they were in they were in a bit of trouble and they are the only ones I know this is it's a slightly moot conversation because this this format is going for next year there won't be teams with buys so I think it has been an issue but it's an issue that that we won't have going forward but I think it's a really good thing.

I think it's a forward but I don't think it's an accident that that we're getting these results I think it's a massive advantage for the teams that have already played.

Yeah I think they're used to the court the conditions they're matched tough and also I think it points to the fact that a lot changes in tennis in a year like these teams have buys because of what they did last year and like Australia like definitely don't feel like a force right now you know and I think I think it sort of speaks to that a little bit as well.

So yeah absolutely a sort of one time thing and it has avoided us having round robin so I would take these buys over a round robin format personally but I agree I definitely think it's been an advantage for the for the teams who who had to play that those

round one matches yeah. Okay that's part two we'll be back in part three to have a quick look ahead to tomorrow and tomorrow I think is kind of officially when the Raffa on the Doll circus rolls into town but yeah we'll look ahead to Italy against Poland which is the first of our semi finals.

When you use SAP concur solutions to automate your business finances you'll be ready for anything except when you're trained to work is also headed to the comic convention with the mighty Zorg on board who happened to bump into his arseneisers with SAP concur you can be ready for almost anything. Welcome back to part three quick look now at Italy against Poland it's an evening match on Monday. Matt all you want is a deciding doubles robber are you going to get it who's going to win it. Good questions. I think I'm not sure we will get it actually. I think Poland are going to get it done in the singles. There he is underestimating Jasmine power Lee. I don't feel too bad about that because she's playing a eagish reantech it doesn't feel like underestimating her.

She was like estimating the reality. And look something we didn't cover on yesterday's podcast was eagish reantech. Quote saying that she would die on the court for Poland here like we sort of talked about that in terms of what her playing the doubles represented it represented that that commitment that level of commitment.

But for her to say that I thought was awesome I loved hearing that. And I think she's very very fired up and motivated to win this I think there's a different pressure for Shviontech representing Poland here than there was at the Olympics. The Olympics you are representing your country but you're still pursuing an individual medal. It's still an individual thing. And we saw the stress we saw the weight of that on Shviontech here.

Yes we saw a little bit of that during the singles for sure but I think generally the vibes have been really good. I think she was buzzing in her 2am press conference or whatever it was the other day. Like I've never really seen her in a press conference and she was buzzing in those celebrations and I think that's I think that's going to be really really good for Shviontech. I think the reason I just I'm struggling with the Italy number two singles. I'm not seeing an obvious choice there.

As I said yesterday Magdalena and Magdalena Freck not that convincing either but maybe I'm just giving the slight edge to them over what I expect to be Kokceiroto. I'm glad you flagged that Shviontech quick because I was I was pretty blown away by it actually given that only hours earlier we were wondering if she even quite had the appetite for the doubles.

I was so wrong. Yeah same same. And now she now she's got a taste of it. I think the appetite will only grow like now she knows that feeling. Yeah. Knows what it's like to win a doubles for your country without he but her catch stealing forehands from me. Yes and I must say I asked Jasmine Palini in the press conference before they knew who their semi final opponent would be but I asked her about Shviontech.

Because I kind of expected Poland to win and I've seen that French open final through a kind of lens of there was nothing Jasmine Palini could do. I don't think she views it as that like she said like I can definitely play better I can definitely do more. Which is you know probably what you have to tell yourself right and so I guess I've completely written that match off which I shouldn't.

But we were there and we did see it and I definitely don't think there was anything more that Jasmine Palini could have done but. The thing is she started really well didn't she? She did yeah. And you know you you saw that she could hurt you just remember a little bit but keeping that up over the course of a match did feel impossible but maybe she feels it's it's possible and look the conditions are definitely better for her heater. Then they were well they're worse for Shviontech.

I don't know whether they're better for Palini but they're worse for Shviontech which is somewhat of a leveler. I would love to see the doubles though. Me too. Because that has been my favorite thing of the whole tournament so far seeing Shviontech in the doubles and she was absolutely incredible. Yeah I want to see that too desperately. It is a it's a Spain press conference for us at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning we'll have a Davis Cup preview tomorrow as well as a Billie Jean King Cup podcast.

It's a two podcast day like today. Except we're on them both. We're on them both. We won't be in competition with David tomorrow. That's a that's a one time only thing. What if David gets bigger numbers than ours? Well we have to be prepared for that because the patriarchy. Yes. And David's doing a part about the HP finals. We'll be able to blame the patriarchy. That is a that is a place uncomfortable being.

I hope you've enjoyed our two podcast day because there's more of them coming your way. Most notably tomorrow. We'll be previewing the Davis Cup finals. We'll have quotes from Rafael Nadal and the rest of the Spanish team if they're able to get a word in. There will be too many questions for anybody but Rafa. Can you imagine if someone's got a question for Pedro Martinez? Like just the daggers that that you'll get for using up a question. It's almost worth just doing it for a troll.

Please do it. Please do it. Yeah, I think it's going to be standing remotely and barely that. Well they're having to literally change the location of it because the press conference room at the site. They don't think it's big enough so that the press conference is taking place at the player hotel which has a I imagine some sort of large conference room. It's hard to overstate and it hasn't even happened yet. It was still two days away from it happening.

I mean don't even know what it is. He might not play. He genuinely might not play. But it's really hard to overstate the magnitude of what it feels like is going to happen in terms of occasion. If the end of Nadal's career here. Yeah, I don't know why it feels bigger and different to Federer that LabourCop. I think it's because that was the LabourCop. Yeah, maybe that's just my sort of LabourCop bias coming out.

But maybe it's just because I'm here and I'm wrapped up in it but this just feels just enormous. Does it feel bigger than Serena? It doesn't feel bigger than Serena to me because like we... It doesn't feel bigger than Serena. But that was anti-grant slam. It was anti-grant slam and we knew she was going to play. Exactly. The unknown here is a complicating factor. Yeah. Like it's massive. Like all of Spain is descending on Malaga.

And I know it's been an organisation all nightmare for the people in charge. And it's amazing. I think Nadal is so undervisive. I think a lot of people just have a lot of love for Afar Nadal. And it feels like everyone just wants to be here and celebrate. I think that's a great point. Yeah, we will pontificate on it more tomorrow and our Davies cut preview. And we'll be back to talk about the Billie Jean King Cup tomorrow as well.

With David, we will have Phoebe in tow spiritually if disappointingly not physical because physically because she is... She's absolutely lovely. Hello Phoebe. Hello Priyanka. Hope you enjoyed that sneaky bit of Nadal chat. We got in today more of more where that came from. Hello to our muskots. Of course the dearly departed Darwin, Francis and Hyder and Soma. Hello to Billie Jean King in Alana Clos. Matt had a drive by encounter with Billie Jean King earlier outside a lift.

Yes. And a full-lower encounter yesterday. Yes. Which maybe we'll get to on a future pod. That's really good. Had a good chat with Billie Jean and Alana yesterday. Good teas. And they are of course sponsors of Billie Jean who I've left in the custody of her grandparents. And hello to our top folks. An executive producer of course Greg, Chris, Jamie and Jeff folks. It would be wrong to do shout outs without David. So shout outs. We'll be back as well David tomorrow. We'll speak to you then.

But the thing is David isn't away. No. He's away from us right now. I will read it. It is. We'll be back tomorrow. Thanks for listening. Thanks for listening. Thanks for listening.
