¶ Discussion
Welcome to our Ted Lasso talk , the Tedcast . Welcome all Greyhound fans , welcome all you sinners from the dog track and all the AFC Richmond fans around the world .
It's the Lasso way around these parts with Coach , coach and Boss , without further ado . Coach Castleton , okay , welcome back . Today we are discussing Wayne , season one , episode six . Who even are we Now ? I'm your host , coach Castleton . With me , as always , is Coach Bishop what's going on ? And our boss , emily Chambers .
I realized that in the last episode , for Wayne I think , because I was saying Tenet , weird . Yeah it sounds like Tenet . And then I brought up the jewels as a Chicago accent . I didn't do it justice . It isn't like hey , do you want me to go to the jewels ? It is you want I should go to the jewels ? And you just say it all in one just long string .
That does sound like what you want , I should go to the jewels . So it is to the jewels always , almost , almost exclusively .
Okay , yeah , no , no , that sounds right boss .
It doesn't . It sounds terrible .
Even to me it sounds like it comes from Chicago land , that sounds like a oh , oh oh , it 100% does , just doesn't sound okay .
Yeah , they invert the sentence so badly . You want I should go to the jewels . It's like we're wild over here .
I love it . I love it . We are going to jump right in today because coaches fired up . Now this is an episode where main episode six is sort of this is when you get past the midway point . You get through the heartache , heartbreak episode .
That was Dell , one of our buttercups , but Megan said I just want to give her a hug , I just want to give her a hug , I just want to . I want someone give Dell a hug . And now we get to . Who even are we now ? And this is again . A lot of this has been relationship , growing pains . A lot of this has been figuring out who everybody is considering .
They didn't know each other very well when they hopped on the bike for the first time , but now we get the plot thickens a little bit as some of the ancillary characters start to have a role . We see the Luchetti's sort of honing in and we see Officer Geller and Papa soup Officer Jay .
They are sort of trying to hunt down the clues and piece everything together . So it's an episode that , if you get through it , I think will inspire you to keep going the rest of the way . Correct me if I'm wrong . What did you guys think ? Let's start with you , coach .
Oh , I definitely I mean while I was in , so maybe I'm not the best one to ask on this , but yeah , I thought that , in terms of where we are in the season , the fact that we're getting these definitive steps from both of these characters saying like yeah , I choose you which we'll talk about more as we go forward , I thought it was very .
I thought it was sweet and brought the heart like front and center , even as the chaos was ramping up . So the both the both elements were working at a pretty high level in this episode .
Boss , what do you think ?
Yeah , no , I was in from the beginning so it didn't need to pull me out anymore , but I do think it was what I am finding .
And of course , I haven't watched the end , so I'm not sure how it goes , but the season seems very well structured and that you introduce a concept and then back it up , and then introduce it and then back it up , and so when they have a development in their personal relationship , you don't think that it's coming out of nowhere .
This is unfortunately to be mean to another show , because that's sort of how I roll . This is not a Jack and Keely , this is more of a . We are seeing the establishment of their relationship and why they would work with each other and also where we're going with it why you got to do that , why you got to do that . Because they had to do it to me ?
Because because Jane Austen never said you go , go , I'm sorry . I understand they wanted it to be like and funny and then talk about something else , but I can't , I can't with that .
Go on , go on , just go on into the episode . It's fine , I'll recover .
Well , listen , one of the one of the great joys for me is watching this show for the first time with coach and boss and to see their reactions . And they were fired up . They were fired up , they were , they smut the thing is .
Here's the thing you guys were smiling when you were supposed to be smiling , even when it got cheesy , where it could have gone off the rails and the cheese could have been not believable . Right , you were with it . With the cheese , you were , you were there for it . When you had moments of tension , you guys were on board for it . It was .
It was fun to watch because it was like seeing something where we're sort of a master puppeteer just moved all three of us . However , they wanted us to move and we went along with it because it's good enough where it doesn't feel insulting . So you just go OK , like , oh , this is the thing we're going to get into .
Butthole Tommy Cole a little bit and some of some of the stuff that came through with him in this episode . But we open with the Luchettis . They are at a filling station , a gas station somewhere , and it's interesting because they are , you know , we know they're sort of on the hunt and and coach , were you ? You know we open .
I'll set it up by saying this it tells us where they are right right from the beginning . So we know it just says somewhere in North Carolina , right , right , right , right to to these idiots that in the pickup truck it's a member , it's a single cab . Pickup truck it's not , doesn't have the extended , extended cab .
So everyone's got to sit in the front on one of those old bench seats , right bucket , right . Teddy always on the on the far left , because he's the older twin by a minute and 40 seconds . Carl's always stuffed right in the middle , right next to daddy .
At this point we get , we get Bobby filling up and the two idiot knuckleheads are in the riding in the the bed of the truck somewhere in North Carolina and they're filling up . Nothing out of the ordinary so far , right , just just a man gassing up his pickup truck . Yeah , and then what happens here , boss ?
Then some asshole in a car kind of car is this ? It's not a DeLorean , but the door is open up the way that a DeLorean does , and the DeLorean is the only car that I could identify that does weird door openings . What is this Like a Lamborghini ?
I don't . I think it looks like a Ferrari to me , but I can't tell . I get for always . And Lamborghini is confused . But I know that's probably not OK , but I just I can't . They both just look like I thought Ferrari in real time .
But I can , I can do some quick research here and see if I can figure it out . It doesn't actually matter that much .
It's a , it's a . I drive a very fancy car , car .
This is not like right .
You aren't getting anything because of its fancy European engineering . This is , I want everybody to know . I have a fancy car and he screams up to the pump and shouts you think you could cut me off , you asshole screaming at Bobby ? I'm fucking talking to you , you fucking asshole , you idiot . Hey , look , motherfucker , all this shit .
Bobby turns around , takes the gas out of the car and sprays it all over him and then lights a match , which , like I , believed that he was not going to do it , because there is no chance that you could set a fire like that , that close to a gas pump , and it not causing a huge , terrible explosion , which even Bobby Luchetti is smart and insightful enough to
not do , but also because he's a fucking maniac and just doused a guy in gasoline . There's a good chance he might have done anything at this point .
Yeah , there's enough gas vapor in the air that you do not want to . It's the vapor you got to worry about . Yes , if you throw a lit match into gasoline it'll put it out like it's a liquid , but if you , it's the vapor on the way there .
That is the trouble and you would think , yeah , you probably don't want to light this match , but they do it and they do . It's funny because I'm always a fan of the strike . A match on something era . You know like like . You know what I mean . You don't really have that anymore .
You have like lighters , you have like extended lighters , you have whatever self lighting vapes . Now you get a , you get just got . Bobby just takes like a hard old school kitchen match on a wooden stick , goes to the tread of his the steel tread to go into the , into the bed of the truck , and bam pops .
It pops it on Like at the end of the fifth element , and now he's holding it up in the air .
I'm always a fan of the fake tough guy , like when you see the moment when he , when you just see that like he wasn't going to do anything but yell and scream and pretend he had a big dick and and and so like just watching him flip from I'm fucking talking to you to was was . That's just a moment I'll always enjoy , in real life or in fiction .
Also , though , I laughed and I knew immediately that he was like negative threat , because anybody who's fought or is really thinking about fighting , who drove up to these three with Bobby's nose looking like that , would know all right , if we start a fight here , there's going to be a fight here and nobody walks around like that because they they're an expert in
calligraphy so I don't understand . like I thought it was funny this guy's talking all loud . I'm like what the fuck is he gonna do ? Like why are you talking loud ? That it was just . It was just so clear to me that I was kind of glad to see him get pumped Because I was like you just talk a lot of it is .
It's more justice porn . It's wish fulfillment stuff . We've all been cut off by terrible people . We've all seen guys like this drive like they own the road . I remember mentioning on an episode a guy who was the son of an NFL owner and I said , oh , you know what was it like working for that guy . He's used to getting his way .
Yeah yeah , and so this is all that . Like this guy is used to getting his way , he can yell at anybody . You see the car and you know like that Ferrari , lamborghini , whatever it is , is more than some people's house it is . It is a preposterous amount of money for that vehicle , and so you know he's used to .
So he feels entitled enough to threaten someone and we don't know what threats are his go to right . You know things because Bobby's not really looking at him .
But in the ever correct words , faithful words , of my dear old friend Joe Porter , who , instead of teaching me to fight , taught me never to get in a fight with someone like him , he would say kid , guys like me will always be guys like you , because guys like you has got something to lose .
That's a real thing .
Right and like he . Just he was like what are you going to take from me ? You know what I mean . He was just like a local guy , what are you going to take from me ? And so it was a . Yeah , it's that moment here . This guy cannot read the writing on the wall . This is you . Don't go bump into this , bobby . Let's get these .
First of all , it's three of them . You don't see the other guys in the in the bed of the trap . But but also , are you like where ? How insulated are you ? How insular is your word that you think this is like in the realm of ? Like this might end well , for you Completely bonkers
¶ Gas Station Incident and Bobby's Expression
. Now , I love this as a , as a , as a creative choice , because , with the exception of Zoolander , we , which is the greatest gas station scene in film history For anyone who hasn't seen it , just go watch it , it is , it's a treasure .
We generally are so law abiding as a civilization that the concept of taking out a gas , the gas , the what do you call it ? The nozzle grip , nozzle , yeah , the thing yeah , and . And taking out the nozzle out of our car and turning and pressing it to squeeze it like a gun is like almost antithetical to right . It's just like why would you ? That's crazy .
You never . But Bobby doesn't , he does not care .
And it didn't take him more than a second , like he was , like it was almost as if this is not the first time he's dealt the guy in gasoline , because I mean he just was so fast Like the guy started yelling and there went the gasoline . I mean it was just like wow , ok .
Now we all . When I was watching you guys watch this . You're like he's not going to torch this guy , like he's not going to just just casually murder someone . But you also have a look on your face is like buddy that's exactly the experience I was having .
I was like there's no way . But there is kind of a way there is .
Right , like , like , or some part of him might get burned or something , yeah , like yeah yeah , yeah . Now let's point out also Bobby's expression . While this guy is streaming out and pulls up screeches to all yelling at the top of his eyes , Did his expression change once ?
Not at all .
I know . Was he freaked out at all by this guy ? Was he threatened in any way by this guy ?
Well , listen , I'm going to not go out on a branch share at all and say that there is always a distinct possibility that when you get into a road rage incident like this , when you follow somebody off of the highway to a gas station in order to yell at them about how they cut you off 10 miles back that things will end extremely violently , like there have
been deaths . It is a thing in the US where people get shot for this shit . So I'm not saying that it couldn't have ended violently . What I'm saying is that Bobby's look is you don't really want this to get violent .
You rolled up and thought you would yell at me , so I had to douse you in gasoline , and if you want to keep yelling , we could make it violent , but you don't want it to get violent .
Yeah , it's like the living definition of you don't want this smoke .
Yes , yes , yeah , you could fuck around and find out .
Well , we both know , you don't want to fuck around Totally this moment .
We were just talking about this the other day . We were listening to some old yeah like old hip hop and it was like so please stay off my back , I will attack . You don't want that . And I was like I remember when you don't want that came out as a concept . Like that was power right , yeah , yeah , yeah , right , exactly .
But I remember , like that , you don't want . That , when that came out , was a very it was a new concept where someone was telling you , believe me , you don't , you don't want that and that , that , that that was a viable thing for them to say in a song . I was like , oh , it was , it was , it was a . It was a little bit of a new concept .
While we're here in the scene , I want to point out to you guys what is the , what is the hat that Bobby's wearing here ?
What is that , Luchetti ? My eyesight might not be enough . Demolition oh , there we go .
Demolition . So his family business where it's him and his two knuckleheads . What do they do professionally ? Coach ? They demolish things . Yeah , they break shit .
They destroy . That's what that is . The family business is destruction .
And remember when , when Wayne signed on to that crew of of the workers , they found he couldn't do anything except what demolition Right . So you know , when they say like , sometimes like , oh , people are attracted to their father mom or their dad . Yeah , maybe , maybe there's something .
Yeah , well , yeah , because it's almost
¶ The Complexity of Bobby's Character
well . That's that gets extra interesting because of the vibe of this moment , because in a way I'm with . I am with Bobby , like I obviously I don't think you should murder someone over them yelling at you to gas station . I think we have to have to be some proportionality in this world .
But I did think like boss is not sure she agrees that she's like maybe , but I , but I did find myself sitting here going like who the fuck you yelling at ? Like I could tell , like if I'm Bobby and coaches know to be long enough , like I would definitely have turned around and been like what ?
the fuck are you yelling at Like even if I did cut you off . now we're not even talk about me cutting you off . Now we're talking about who the fuck you think you yelling at . And so I just thought , like the look on his face is like you don't know me , you know , you know . So I was , I was with him and it felt like Wayne to me .
It felt like the moment where someone does whatever it is to Wayne and you and I , at this point I just go , oh boy this is , this is our mentality up here .
So right , there's a reason why you're comparing him to Wayne . It's because , culturally , you would take one of these knuckleheads out of New England and they will automatically know that they are the toughest mother fucker out there . Put them in any other state , it doesn't matter , right , right ?
Now there's some hard mother fuckers .
It's how we identify , it's how we identify Hot Nefoya , cold Nefoya . How miserable are you ? And therefore , how valid is your existence in doing . That's a really it's yeah no , I hear you it's got roots in the Puritans , but it's a thing . And so Bobby doesn't , doesn't , doesn't skip a beat , he cracks the , the , the match on .
And I say I use that verb because it's not like he just , it's not like a little thing , it's like a notable , like pop . Yeah the light on , pulls a cigarette out from behind his ear and cups the match , lights the cigarette and then he's about to backhand it like we've seen in every movie .
Right , like I just love the blocking in this too , you know , he's about to backhand it right at the guy who tenses . And what happens here , boss ? What does he do ?
Well , he eats it instead , like puts the lit match into his mouth to extinguish it , which he didn't do in real life . This is I was just about to compliment Dean Winters on his smoking skill . He , the man , smoked cigarettes at some point in his life . They have absolutely no question .
Yeah , I didn't really think about it , but yeah , yep yep yep .
The first couple episodes of the US version of Shameless they had most of the characters smoke .
Anyone who was like 16 or above was smoking a cigarette , and about halfway through the season , lip , played by Jeremy Allen White , was the only one who was still smoking , because everyone else looks fucking ridiculous holding a cigarette , like they were actors who would not tarnish their beautiful lungs with the dirty nicotine smoke .
And Jeremy Allen White was a smoker , so he knew what he was doing . Dean Winters has smoked before . I even liked the way that , instead of putting his hand in front of the cigarette in order to like block the wind , he puts his whole hand around it with the like he fucking . He knows . He knows what he's doing .
He didn't actually eat the match , but the rest of it impeccable smoke .
You're saying he didn't in real life eat them because Bobby does .
Bobby does , dean Winters does not . Yeah , no , they did not ask an actor to put a lip match into their own mouth , yeah . I don't think they've done that , since Kirstie Alley was supposed to stop smoking on Cheers and put a lit cigarette in her mouth . I'll have to find the clip .
I vaguely remember this because she was sneaking and smoking and then someone came in .
Yes , Sam busts in in order to catch her because they have a bet of some sort , and then , after he closes the door she flips it out of her mouth , yeah , and like keep smoking .
It's fucking amazing Anyway that's a thing you can do , by the way , Like that's like the editorial you sure one can do yeah , no , but he .
he extinguishes the match and says that's a cute car .
Yeah , while making eye contact , contact with the guy , the guy has tensed up , knowing that he seconds from death . That's a cute guy . Is that your mother's cat ? You , you have a safe fucking trip . I turn , turns over to the boys . Help far as I'll call nine hours . Daddy , let's get down , motherfucking .
Yeah , there's also something bad as if you've ever done it or witnessed it about sending somebody on their way .
I mean like , like it's .
It's like literally dismissive , but it's also like like spiritually , like he's like you , you helping puppy dog , are irrelevant to me , it's time for me to go . You have a nice day Like you're the opposite of a threat . You're the like yeah , yes , there's nothing , we're done . We're done here . Exactly that we're done here .
So let's go get this motherfucker both Carl and Teddy in the back , yell Motherfucker , motherfucker , motherfucker . And then they peel out , leaving the ass hat soaked with gasoline and of course we get the Wayne title card , which already all three of us are smiling . I'm watching these two smile and I'm smiling ear to ear .
Isn't it funny how in that interaction , we know Bobby is as an asshole . We know we saw him grab , dealt by the hair . We we hate everything about him . We've seen him be cowardly . We've also seen him be sort of kind last episode in the turns it around in the store and in this particular scene we're fully on his side . In the moment you go , I listen .
I just think it's a trick Sometimes . You know there are these . Maybe it's just because humans can't keep track of everything for that long .
I don't know We'll talk about this with Game of Thrones boss , where you know someone who would do horrific stuff , like one of the early seasons , which then became a beloved character later and you're like , wait , but do you remember that he did like specifically this ?
You know , I know , but I love him with this , this and this , and that's building characters with depth and nuance and believable motivations and believable personality traits and quirks . It's what makes for good television , among other things .
One thing that I'll say about that , though , is Humans are very , very bad at understanding that depth is not the same as growth , in that if you learn something new about a character , that doesn't negate the earlier things about the character , it doesn't mean that now they are a good guy .
It means that they are still a pretty horrible person who is capable of doing kind things when they want to Like .
I think a lot about Jamie Lannister and how , in the first episode , one of the first things he does is push a small child out of a window with the intent of killing that small child in order to protect himself and his sister who he was just having sex with . Show us fucking wild if you're completely out of the window .
Look , coach , wait , hold up , Maybe I will . Maybe I'll check that first one out . I mean , I don't know , no , these things are all true . He already says he never got there . He can't .
He's got a weird face on him .
He can't really .
Yeah , no , that's no . There was a lot of . There was just a lot of information to take in at one time , like I was , we were devil . Oh yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah .
Let me tell you the voiceover narration in that first episode fucking wild , Just the exposition that they gave . If they didn't have that , that was it .
That's a joke . She's misleading you , Coach .
I am , I'm trying to . I just wanted an old , tiny British narrator to say and then we find Jamie and Cersei fucking in the attic , then the child managed to survive the deep hole .
He done , but this is the thing .
So in the first episode he tries to kill a child and then in later seasons were like oh , but he cares about these people . So he's growing as a ? No , he's not .
He always cared about people .
He's just also still capable of murder . So Bobby is capable of being a hardcore badass . That must be part of how he ended up getting Donna and get some people to like him , but also he's a fucking dick .
He's both . He's a total idiot , but he is . He is a tough idiot and this is this is maybe one of the problems with being having a badge of honor in New England is he literally does not give any fucks about threatening a cop at a cop social event . He doesn't care , like he .
When the cop decides not to press charges , he mocks him for it in the police station . Oh yeah , that was amazing .
Yeah , I forgot that .
You know what I'm saying he's not smart but he is tough . You can take a lot away from this guy , but he's taken some lumps and he still keeps showing up , for better or for worse . He's reprehensible . I don't want to make it sound like I like the guy , but you know this is where some character depth is woven in .
With the exception of at this point at the start of episode six , I don't think we've seen any real cookie cutter characters in Wayne , with the exception of maybe the college kids at the at the motel .
I thought they had a little bit less depth than everybody else , that's right , but everybody else is like really , even the weird ones , and you know everyone's got a thing , even the , you know the randos that they need along the way . So we get the title card and we try to try to absorb that moment with Bobby . Chapter six starts who even are we now ?
Is the title of the episode . Now we're in Richmond Hill , georgia . We're at a pizza place and what is happening here ? Coach , looks like Wayne and Deller sitting in a pizza place here in Richmond Hill .
Yeah . So they're sitting , they're looking around , wayne starts to move . I was lost here . I don't know if , if you all understood immediately what was happening
¶ Scavenging for Food
. I was lost . So Wayne starts to move and at that point Dell tells them no , you never eat at a table . Kids do girl's shit . They snot all over everything . They touched their own assholes , which I thought was I don't know . I've read a lot of Dr Spock . That wasn't one of the things . I was Holy shit . I was like , wait , we what , Coach ?
that was one of the later chapters . What ?
are they in the abridged version . They touched their own assholes . I was like , hey , all right , let's not do that .
Then , whatever it's about to happen , and then well , he gets up , she stops him because another people at another table leave .
Yeah , she's like and he's thinking about maybe . Well , what we figure out , what I figured out after this , when they moved , is that they are waiting for someone to leave pizza on their table and they slide in and pretend it's their pizza and eat the leftovers . So they are broke and they are hungry .
So they look over , there's a table that just gets just got left . They slide over , sort of move in as if they've been sitting there the whole time .
He hates mushrooms , so now coach , hold on , I want to bring . I want to stop real quick . I love that . Thank you for for setting that up . Boss , you and I talk a lot about shows that show actual poverty or people like you know this is . This is not as dark as your shameless or some other stuff , but it is .
It's like it's a commentary that if you're hungry enough , you know like normal rules of society , like oh , someone else's germs are on this . Like go right out . The fucking thing Like this is like there's an adjustment curve . So we're watching this . We see him in a pizza place .
There's an opening , a establishing shot behind the counter of a guy using one of those long ass pizza knife cutters that's got a handle on each side of it to sort of sort of rock back and forth , yeah . I get those clean cuts on the on the pie , and then so that establishes we're in a pizza place .
And then we see them sitting behind the table of a pizza place and I think , oh , they're waiting for their pizza because they're in a pizza . Oh no , but you didn't think that at all . You saw them right away . You thought they're scavenging .
I didn't know what they were doing , but they were both sitting on the same side of the table .
I don't know if something was wrong .
Interesting If you , if I see you as a couple sitting on the same side of the table with nobody else on the other side , if you were at a booth and you were sitting next to your dining companion rather than across from them . Something bad has happened . I don't know what it is , but something bad has happened . You don't like that ? Oh God , no .
Does anybody ? Does anybody prefer that ?
I don't know I don't know , I lost you .
Why would you not want to ?
look at them . Why would you want to have to turn your head in order to be like hey look , how in love we are no .
sometimes you can't be away from your lover .
Oh that word bumps me out between the words meat and pizza .
We got sexy .
We got love .
We got a running list of words that don't go great around here .
Thank you , Tina Fey , for giving me that brilliant line . Oh , that word bumps me out .
That was Liz Lemon on 30 . Say it again because I kind of spoke over it I love that line so much .
Jack says we are lovers and Liz says , oh , that word bumps me out , unless it's between the words meat and pizza . I mean , like I already started laughing when she said that word bumps me out Me too , me too , it's so true .
But , it's so true , it's only a punchline word . They did a whole sketch with Rachel Dratch and Will Ferrell on these two disgusting people in a hot tub marinating as lovers . So it's a troubling word , but yes , I think that's . Maybe that's okay . You wisely point out they're on the same side of the thing , so the table is so it's not going to .
There's some . Some is running down .
Something's happening . I wasn't sure what it was , but something was happening .
Okay , so they finally get to another place . There's two pieces left . It's a mushroom pizza . Wayne comments that he hates mushrooms and pick it up here . Coach what's happening here .
She says I'll eat your fucking mushrooms , which you know . Okay , fine , you don't want them , I'll eat them . But that also felt very couple-ish to me , Like I felt there was like a very it was a quick little way to sort of like this is how they relate . Like we are here in the relate that she just and she's not like , fine , Put them on mine .
She's like , fine , I'll eat them . And she's like reaching on to his slice of pizza to pick them off , Like so I thought that established some good relationship there and so , okay , you know , like mushrooms , you don't have mushrooms . So you know , each of us a pizza , yeah .
She just , she just like , like , like , like orangutan fingers into his , like you know , like first of all we're going to eat somebody else's pizza , so it's okay if I just smash my hand and she just like man handles the mushrooms on to her pizza , no qualms whatsoever .
No no .
I mean it's right out of it's right out of the queen's school of dining etiquette , I think .
Oh , I didn't . I didn't take that as a like we're eating somebody else's pizza , so I'm going to mash it . I thought that was that's like . If you see two people . Well , I guess it depends . If I take a drink out of your cocktail , I think we're going to sleep together , that's like .
That's the level of intimacy where I'm like , oh I'm going to try your drink , like this is , and also I will try , like I'll have a sip of my friend's drinks , but this is like an intimacy thing , like I'm going to put my fingers in your food and you don't mind because I rubbed my body all over my , so it doesn't even matter .
Yeah , I'm actually in agreement with you .
I'm saying we've already .
We've already had the first thing . I was like this is somebody else's pizza , like , who gives a shit ? I'm fine , I'll put my fingers in . But yes , it is a right there's . There's a familiarity , context to it , I think , and so that's funny . I didn't know that . You take it a little bit . Yeah , I guess .
Yeah , if I have a drink of your thing , that it's on then is what you're saying , which is a little bit Well , like , especially a cocktail , because that's not something you're not like .
Oh my god , I'm so thirsty , could I have a sip of your water ? It's like , uh , I am drinking this thing specifically because of how it tastes and because it makes everybody a little bit silly , and I am trying what you are drinking , I am tasting your drink .
It's an intimate thing , unless you're in college , in which case sometimes you just grab the wrong beer and you're like well , I'm just going to roll with this , this is fine , this is fine .
How none of us died . I'm so .
None of us died , it's fine so . I'm also I . The one thing I do want to say about , uh , the being poor mindset . If you don't have enough money , if you're scavenging everything else , you would be eating their leftover pizza instead of ordering your own .
Um , there is a bit , there is a mentality about it that is entirely oh , it's gross , without any backup .
Behind that , I'm thinking of how dumpster diving became sort of a popular cool thing to do for some groups , even though they have the money they're like well , this is perfectly good food that's being thrown away because of chain regulations , chain store regulations or just that the chain store decided they don't want to sell this anymore .
So I definitely do understand that this is usually a thing people have to do because of poverty , but it shouldn't be . We should be less weird about things being gross and not wasting food
¶ Food Waste and Social Norms
. Like there's also an element of it that like it is smarter to eat food that is going to be going to waste than to eat new food and waste it two times .
Yeah , it's , it's . It is fascinating . I mean , we live how we live and some of it is just , you know , it's where we are . We can do our best , but the amount of food we waste , like just as a matter of like course . I laughed at a joke the other day . It was like we don't waste food in this house .
We put it in a tupperware and keep it in the fridge until it spoils , like decent human beings , and I thought that like it's very funny , that's funny , that's very funny because when I do it I am thinking like , oh , it's a shame to waste this . And I actually eat a lot of leftovers . That's a whole other story .
Makes me popular with my mother-in-law We'll talk about later . But uh , but I don't mind leftovers . But it is true that , like , sometimes you save , you know , a quarter of some hamburger and you're like what , what ? What are we doing ?
Oh yeah , no , I can't do that .
I've taught my children to um . I always say you know I'm not going to waste food on them . I always say don't rat on your brothers and sisters , do not . I was like it's you guys against me and I don't . I can't stress this enough . I am not in it with you . I want you to have your brothers and sisters backs at all costs .
And that has started a really backfire for me , because I'm not sure that counts as backfiring . I mean you basically told them no , no , because I'm like this is the way I want you to have . But okay , the only reason I bring this up is because , coach , we knew exactly what you said .
We just left overs and then I put them in the fridge and I've been meaning to . Well , I did it once upon a time . I got a whiteboard to put on the fridge to make a note of the things that were in the fridge .
Because of my ADHD , I forget that they're in there and I do this thing where I will start to clean the fridge out and I'm like , oh my God , there was this in there . Oh crap , I forgot . But now my kids do a pantomime of this it was like five days ago where they go way over the top .
They take turns opening the fridge , grabbing anything out , like a grab , like the butter dish , and then go there's a whole fucking ham in it .
I don't say fucking .
There's an entire ham , a Christmas ham . I can't believe we wasted this ham Like that's , and I'm like , oh my God , but it but it . The intent to save the food is there , you know , you're like oh I don't want to waste food , which is what Blossom and you are advocating , and you're right .
Like what weird social mores do we have there where it's like , yeah , it's inappropriate to eat pizza that's not touched , like you go , okay , yeah , whatever , yeah , yeah , go ahead , blossom .
Well , just only because , also , I have been to Pizza Hut buffet . I have had pizza from a buffet before , I have known that other people had access to that same food and I go ahead and eat it because the norms of that situation say this is fine and the norms of Del and Wayne situation says that it's not .
It isn't anything about being gross or the food not being okay or anything else . It's this is acceptable and this isn't . And you can fairly easily change what is acceptable , at least more than you can change what will give you food poisoning , like we can make this difference .
There's the only time we talk about how I never get mad . The only time I've gotten mad , like in the last six weeks probably , is I saw this video of a guy who's a Whole Food Coach . Remember , I sent this to the group , this text that was a guy at Whole Foods taking , taking the ladle out . Of soup and drinking it from Whole Foods .
And I was like , and I was like , why is this ? So I texted my friends I'm like I would , I would be in prison .
I don't know why . I don't know why this is like whatever it is , it's the perfect , it's you know like the intersection of all of the things that I .
it's like the selfishness , the entitlement , the rudeness like the you know you have no care about your common man , whatever it is . I was like it got me so triggered I'm like who the fuck like ? And I don't get mad I just in general can shrug most things off . But I sent it to coach and I was like I thank God I was not in this particular Whole Foods .
I don't know if I would have been able to control my body from the like tackle that would have happened Well and he deserves to be tackled .
And and you know I get it right Like who knows what in this person's life led them to that moment . So , putting that aside from , I'm just so funny about that particular piece .
Like if I'm at home cooking for my family , like we're all here living our lives and all of its gross glory , some of the time I still , if I taste something with a spoon , I go rinse that spoon before I put it down to use it again in the pot Like I would like . So that's my level of like how we handle that .
So the idea that you would go to a public place and put a ladle to your mouth is so insane to me and just like I don't even have the words .
And he kept dipping it back in the soup and just drinking it out of the lab Like the vat of the vat of soup .
Well , I wouldn't know that , because I saw one and I stopped the video so I was like , okay , I got it , I get it , I got what happened here , I don't need to sit here and watch this . I was like so grossed out ?
No , no , it was . It's so fun . I should do some deep thinking about what specifically . I guess one of the things that I hate is when you're a big social contract .
So anybody who's like is it breaks a social contract , you tend to that . You don't .
You're right , but if they're specifically inconsiderate , the light is going to change . There's enough time on the yellow light for two cars to get through , but you're going to wait so that only you get through Makes me crazy . I'm like are you not aware of other people in a hurry too ? Like it makes me just . Yeah , anytime , you're right , it's all social .
I may have told you about this before , but quickly , because you use that example of like the light . I actually wrote an article . I should see if I can find it and share it in the community , because it's just random that you brought up this example .
I wrote an article about privilege and I use that as an example because once my I remember being in the car with my dad and we were like the second car in line light turns green and like some guy , a few cars back honks and I was like you know , like relax , buddy kind of a reaction . And my father was like oh , we'll see .
First and second car feel like relax , but we know we're going to make it , but the fifth car does no . So to the fifth car it's like let's go . And it was like a real lesson to me , like yeah , remember that you're not in the fifth car . So you see it as like , hey , everything's fine , everything is not fine , get out of the fucking way .
So anyway , that's like to be like a great vision of privilege . Like . I understand that you are in the second car when you evaluate who should be upset about what .
I'm too . I get to . I analyze this stuff too much because this comes back to the smarts versus dumps for me , where it's like it . When the light turns green , the first car goes , then you get this like dummy reaction time between the first car and second car , like , oh , we're going . And then you get like a .
Then the third car is like , damn , go now too . And then there's a dumbier reaction and , by the gift of the , I'm like , oh my God , just be ready , just be ready . It makes me crazy . You know that you're in a car you know that you're in a traffic light , you know that the light is going to turn Be ready .
I love that you're so upset about this I guess it's like oh , my God it makes me crazy .
What are you doing ?
Is this also fascinating to you ?
It makes a lot of sense . It is fascinating , but it does make a lot of sense in that and no , no , no , no , no . I think it also makes sense for me , for Castleton , though , because he wants everybody to do the right thing .
That's true , like part of your whole , like what you want is that you don't have to enforce the social code , like I'm fine enforcing it , I , I shout at people . Well , I don't shout , but I say like very clearly , don't stand at the top of the stairs .
I almost ran into a woman and almost knocked her down a flight of stairs on the L the other day because I was coming around and I am ready to walk , and I swear to God , she stopped at the top of the fucking stairs . She had to have known that there were people behind her , she had to have known that nobody else was going to stop .
And she just fucking stopped because she needed to check her phone and figure out where she's going . And I almost run into her and I said don't stop there , that's not where you stand . Go , stand down there . And I like pointed at where she needs to stand , and I'm a fucking asshole at that time .
But I feel like Castleton has the same impulse , the same like listen , motherfuckers , we are all trying to get through this together , so I need you to not get in my fucking way all the time , so that I can get out of your fucking way .
No , that's a great . That's a great way to capture that . Exactly right . The fact that he would even have to say , don't stand there is him going . What are we doing here , people ? What are we doing , yeah ?
What are you making me raise my voice ?
I wouldn't be as . Yeah , I wouldn't be as , as , don't you know , that's , that's . Yeah , I probably would just shake my head and walk by and say something to my breath , but yeah , Well , this way she's not going to get knocked on the downstairs next time .
No , yeah , right .
But I go . How did she have a life where she ? It's like this happens in grocery stores all the time . I'm going to you know , do , do , do , do , do . There's somebody coming one way with a cart . You're going the other way with a cart . You go , do , do , do . I'm going to stop right next to the cart and I'll just look at a little stope top stuffing .
I'm like what are you doing ? This is a thoroughfare . I don't understand . Park it in front of the cocktail weenies that no one's going to get . Go to the most the low traffic area to put your car . I seriously , I've coached . I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because I'm behind them , looking , looking around like am I on a fucking ?
like like Frank show , I get it .
How are people so clueless about everybody else around ? The woman at the top of the stairs she's in us . What hundreds of people there ? Probably dozens , right .
There were . It was the middle , it was like later in the morning , so it wasn't rush hour , but there were still plenty of people like she still got off and we left the same train car together . She knew there were people that were standing next to her and moving with her and made no fucking sense . It is to the point now . Listen , I'm sorry .
I know that the real America is the one where people live in small rural cities and everybody knows each other . In the big cities we don't count as real America , and that's fine and everything . But I will fucking tell you that there is a chain of grocery stores . One is not too far from my house , it's called Mariano's .
There's one not too far from my house and there's one not too far from the boyfriend's house . And I refuse to go to the one at the boyfriend's house anymore because it is technically in the suburbs , which means that people are bringing their very large cars to get a lot of food and their very large grocery carts , and it makes me fucking crazy .
What I want is a little hand basket so I could zip around the store and get what I need to fucking get . I don't want , I do not want to stand behind you while you get all of the different cereals for your lovely children . I just want to get the fucking butter and eggs that I need and I want to get that I have 100% to get that .
They have every right . They can take 45 minutes to pick cereals if they want , just don't be in any way , but not in my way .
Just don't be my fucking way , not in the way .
Take all the time you need . There should be no rules about how you can ruminate in the general mill section for as long as your little heart desires . But Jesus age Christ , get out of the fucking way . Let people live their lives .
This is great .
There is an aspect I said one time that people who drive 65 in the fast lane are fascists , and that was a joke Mostly , but I do mean it a little bit In my that .
I mean they believe that , rather than them changing to accommodate how traffic is flowing , you can't be in the fast lane because the fast lane wants to go 85 or 90 if you're me , or 95 sometimes . If you're me , you need to be in the slow lane , but they insist . No , what we are doing is we are going 65 . So in the fast lane , in the fast lane .
you're going 65 .
¶ Reckless Driving and Spicy Pranks
I'm comfortable being going whatever I want , wherever I want , with no regard to the people who are with me . No no regard . Somebody might be in a hurry . This is the passing . That's what this is . That's what it's for For passing .
You're going to make me go around and that's why I get to drive in it because I pass everybody , because I drive recklessly fast .
It's a bad idea . I drive recklessly fast .
Okay , I do , it's bad .
All right , jesus Christ , oh God , my blood pressure . All right , we got back to the pizza place and they structurally have to get Wayne out of the room , so what they do is they have a table behind them . There's 14 ages at the table two boys , two girls . One of the guys trying to press the girls . It's not so bad .
And I don't know , what does he pick up ? Is that just hot ?
pepper . It looked like the red pepper , whatever . Like who cares Red pepper dispensing yeah .
I don't know . I actually need help with this because I know that these things are interesting , yeah , right Because you would never be grabbing that jar .
Right , right , right . Meanwhile I have Boss's reaction which is like aw red pepper flakes . That's cute yeah .
That's like what I add to .
just like you know , this is boring , Let me just toss some of this on you .
Oh yeah , that's what you put on broccoli when you roast broccoli .
Yeah , seriously , I've done that . I do that , yeah , for sure , seriously .
Yeah , that makes it delicious . I might start sweating this is the good right Right . I think I've had red pepper flakes before and like it , like instantly , was like flopped sweating , it was like what's going on ? Like is there , wow , yeah , like it's that , it's that , whatever this is , these are Scandinavian Right .
So basically this guy says , oh , I'm hanging with a bunch of pussies , and he , he ingests , he pours some red pepper right into his gullet and swallows it Like a big tough guy and takes a second , and then he's like holy shit , I mean water . Dylan and Wayne are sort of tangentially aware of this going on . And what ?
Dale starts laughing and Wayne says that's not so hot , yeah . And so what does he do , boss ?
It takes a bunch of handful , put it in his mouth . I don't know how they did this , if it was actual makeup or if it was just a result of the spice , but his cheeks immediately go bright red . I know that too . But he's not responding , but you can tell it is not . It is not working for it . It was born a line cartoonish .
Like I really it made me laugh . Yeah , yeah .
And he's you know he's a , he's a nice Irish boy . So if he did do it for real , mark McConaugh , he would be probably have the same , a lot of the same reaction I had . All right , it says I need to pee . And then she says I bet you do . What does this ? I bet you do . And he , he heads to the bathroom . And then what now ?
What the hell happens here , coach ? What is happening ? As soon as he , the door closes behind him , some dude runs up . And then what happened ?
It's one of the kids says , actually one of the girls will get to know a little better shit . Truancy raid .
¶ School Security Officer and Pizza Mishaps
We've got a school security officer coming in through the front door of the pizzeria and then it what ? Who seems to be an administrator coming through the back door . So you know , this is their big , this is their big bust .
All right , you all know the drill , like they've seen too many movies , because you're really talking to kids who are just skipping school and eating pizza , like it's really not that deep , it's not the wire , but they're in checker bag . It's like a hole , you know , like it's way too much .
But the first guy comes to get girls to grab the bag , ends up getting a needle to the crotch from Dell , who you know , this ain't her first rodeo , you shouldn't pay attention . And then they get a woman , actually , comes in security guard and then carries her out , bear hugs her from behind , gets her bear hugged from behind and gets her out of there .
Never send a man to do a woman's job . And so then everybody's out . We've got the bag , we've got the kids , everybody's out . Then outcomes , outcomes . Wayne from the bathroom , and this place that was just , you know , crawling with teenagers is empty . Everybody asks where's the girl , and I don't know which girl you mean .
But the truancy cops just raided this bitch , which I thought was funny . I don't know why . I thought it was funny as I did . And we get tire squealing . But then Wayne runs out with the pizza knife , and I've never been so glad something didn't go Wayne's way . I was like , oh my God bro , there's gotta be a better plan than that .
And by pizza knife , what do you mean ? The knife ? The guy was even beginning to cut the pie . So I mean it's like running outside with essentially a machete .
Yeah , it's machete length . I'm like what ? And he's got it up over his head . Like he wasn't coming out there to brandish it .
Like somebody was gonna lose a fucking hand , yeah no , Wielding , that's a great .
yes , that's exactly what he was wielding it . He didn't just have it , he was going to use it .
Oh my God , we've watched five episodes , we're in our sixth . I've never been so glad to see something not go Wayne's way , because I was like , oh my God , how does that end ?
So we cut to Del sitting in the school library , which again , this show does a really good job of giving you the quiet joke also , like sort of giving you a range , because to me , del sitting in a school library of a school where she does not go , because the administrator is just a clueless asshole who just sees teenagers , random teenagers , and you must go
to our school . There's no other school , I assume , in this town and he wouldn't know Del one way or the other , but he actually doesn't know that she doesn't go to the school . She says I don't go to your school and his response to that in the peteria was keep that up and I'll call your parents . Well , what ?
do you mean you call my parents ? You're ?
not hearing me , bro , I don't go to your school , but yeah anyway . So yeah , we're in the library now with Del .
This is how Skyrim opens . The classic video game Skyrim is you're on a wagon with a bunch of people that are about to be executed and they read everybody's name , and then they look at you as the main character and they go oh , I don't have them on my list . And this imperial woman who's in charge ? She goes well , just cut his head off anyway .
Oh , I also feel very powerless , in that I played that game a few times and you go like you could just not . You can be like oh , I guess it's a mistake , you're free , sir . But instead she's like no , yeah , let's come anyway , kill him .
I . I thought you meant that in Skyrim you somehow also miraculously find a decent looking pizza place in North Carolina , because that was one of the things about this scene that I've hound least believable . That pizza looks pretty decent . I'm sorry , north Carolina , I am doubting you , I'm doubting your pizza skills .
Barbecue absolutely fucking Lutely , like no question Pizza , I don't know about it .
There's good and bad everywhere , that's fair . My experience bosses , sometimes you know , get a get a good , get a good , get a good . Roll of the dice , you get a good pizza , good pizza , everywhere . You don't think I mean maybe I don't know , I'm not a pizza , I'm not a pizza snob and I go .
You know , like I know there are people who are like oh , this crosses to my body . This dough was never this . This is not enough sugar in the . Whatever I just go , it's , it's pretty damn good Most of the time like very , very hard to have like really like school cafeteria pizza .
Yes , microwave pizza or whatever you know , stuff like that is terrible .
But in a in a regular professional company that serves pizza professionally , usually it's fine ish .
I mean OK , so I want to agree with you . But number one , I know what St Louis pizza is and I can't abide . And number two , there should be some good food in all places , but the best tacos someplace in Wisconsin .
When I was on a drinking trip basically a ski trip , but I didn't ski a drink the best tacos in the area served it with American cheese on top and I was like , well , you guys are cruel , this is unacceptable . This is a bad thing to do this is . This is a hate crime against Mexicans somehow . I think it was Wisconsin .
Oh , with my taste buds . That's why , oh my God , that's a lot better than that spicy Mexican style stuff .
OK , so it's not it's if it . Ok , listen this is where . This is the one area where I get sort of snobby , because Aurora , illinois , where I grew up , somehow has a very large population of Mexicans , specifically from Haleesco , so we've got delicious fucking tacos the best . Like you , I understand how that sounds ridiculous .
The role of a should not be a destination for tacos .
They're fucking great they . I didn't know that people had chicken tacos that aren't chicken tinga Chicken tingas how you do it . Do not serve me dry ass cubes , chicken breast inside a tortilla , and expect me to eat it with my human mouth . That's uncalled for . It's outrageous that you do it .
If you put cheese onto a taco , it should be chihuahua cheese and that's it . You don't put any other cheese on top of a taco . It's unacceptable .
Yeah , just love it .
Yeah , that's just great . But all it takes is someone from from wherever , someone from Mexico , to relocate to a stupid town somewhere in America and decide to open up a restaurant and you go . My God , this is like authentic right unbelievable food yes , right .
This is you guys , fucking . You have no idea . I will get down on Taco Bell , don't get me wrong , I will eat that as well , but I'll put fucking American cheese on this .
I will not eat .
Taco Bell . The pizza side of this conversation . I always think of the . I forget who first said it to me , but that pizza and and sex , there's there a like in that you can have better pizza , but have you ever really had bad pizza ? That's kind of where I land on the pizza thing . Yeah , like some of like more .
That's a joke that a man told me Even good sex is even bad sex is good sex .
Even bad pizza is good , did you hear ?
that's not .
That's not a joke , that a straight woman tells that's , that's a joke , that a man tells Well , well , guess who's in charge later , that's fair .
It's fair . I mean it's inherently unfair and to horrible . But that's fair .
Women aren't supposed to enjoy sex , though right I'm , I'm now , I'm just confused .
No , wait , that's a thing , no , no , no , no , you heard right Female orgasm is a myth .
True , thank goodness . All right , so we are now in the school library and coach you were you were talking about . You know just the soft joke of it all , that that Dell is here and you know she's like reading a book at a table by herself , and then , lo and behold , two girls push over .
They come from another table and they are the two girls that were sitting behind her in the restaurant and they are for lack of a better term smitten with her as a human being . So not a lot happens in the bustling metropolis of Richmond Hill , georgia , and so I take it back to North Carolina .
I actually met Georgia . Not sure where I got to North Carolina .
That's where the Luchetti incident . Luchettis was the .
Luchetti . That's where the Luchetti yes , yes , no Georgia , I also doubt your pizza , just so we're clear .
¶ The Girls and Dell's Cultural Shock
So these two girls , the local girls from Richmond Hill they are , they are totally into Dell . They're just , like you know , talking about how sassy she is , how she needs the , the narc , and Dell's like how do we get out of here ? Can pull a fire alarm ? And they're like it's not prison , it's lunch detention .
You know they'll give you your bag back , just hang out and see what the snack is . And she's like wait , they feed you during the attention here . You know so it's , it's , you're getting a little . It's a culture shock kind of moment . It's like oh , this is not . You know , we don't have to pull a fire alarm , get out of here , leave the room .
Yeah , just , you know why don't we wait for the snack , the detention snack ? She's like wait , what Like ? So a little bit of a different environment , different vibe . It's just one of the girls says don't worry if it's bland , we got some flame and Cheeto stashed over .
In nonfiction , dell is Typically Dell , right off the way , standoffish , tells him to fuck off , and not so many words on your mind . You're in fucking business , but they're . They're like undaunted .
This is Did you take that as fuck off , or more like I didn't get the sense that she was like don't fucking business . I'm saying like I took it more as like all right , you're going you're pushing it like I don't know you , but I didn't take it as get the fuck away from my table .
If there's a difference , maybe I'm making up that there would be a district , I don't know .
I guess I think of none of your fucking business as like , oh OK , I don't want to be bothered , ok , but OK , either way . Whatever , she's not as open . Surely , initially , initially Because she's Dell , because this is her programming , she's from New England is what we do .
We vary , we keep people at arm's length , you know , suspicious of outsiders , they're not even from round here , and so she . But these girls are undaunted . First of all , I love these girls . Did you ? Was that the same ? I don't know if it's just me , boss , you would .
Well , yeah . So I think the issue is people like Dell and I'm not saying that drags to early whatsoever , but people who behave the way that Dell does when she need the truancy off of her , need the truancy officer right in the balls because that's what she's going to fucking do Can be difficult to it could there can be some abrasiveness .
I think I've referred to myself before as slightly abrasive Like I am . I am not for everyone . I am not one of those kinds of people where everybody is going to like me and that's fine . The people who like me usually are more likeable by the general public , if that makes sense . Like these are the .
These are the girls that , if they like Dell , they might not be the most popular ones in school , but they understand what's going on and why they would like .
Dell Right , Right . Yeah , they see they seem to immediately get about her . Not just that she's sort of out of place and that they've never seen her before , but that you got a whole outsider thing going on where the outsiders around here . So you know , you found your tribe . Yes , it's a tribe member .
Yes , more importantly , yes . Yeah , absolutely , I thought these . So we always talk about how much we like casting the show these . These girls are named Jenny and Trish .
Trish is played by Odessa Azion and Jenny is played by Zoe de Grand Maison , which is I believe we got to talk to the king of the buttercups , because I think he knows a little bit of he might , I don't know . He's in a In French , canada , but he might know a thing or two about some of the French words there .
But Zoe de Grand Maison , I believe , is Zoe of the big house De Glamaison . Anyway , interesting , cool name . These actors are the kick ass . I love them . I want to show about these two girls . That's how much I like them . I was like I would watch the shit . They are just outgoing up for whatever .
Want to have fun , really like Dell , and totally fine with breaking down her walls . She's like they're like you're hanging out with us after school . That's a thing . They're both like yep , like like done , like you're doing this . They're kind of troublemakers , but they're also kind of fun and they're also kind of nice .
Yeah , nice . Yeah , they're actually very , very nice feet . They embrace her . It's kind of cool .
What do we know about how Dell was treated up at Hagler High in lovely downtown Brockton , Massachusetts ? She was not embraced . Crack baby , crack baby . There you go .
You got it all in a phrase . There you go .
So when we cut away from that scene we definitely get the sense like Dell is a little bit not only just surprised , but like this is kind of nice , so that's a nice little moment .
We'll see , but I just want to flag throughout . Dell has a hankering for a desire for whatever you want to call it Normalcy that I think drives a lot like several of her choices and where she kind of will drift towards . I think Wayne has accepted and embraced .
I'm an outlaw he doesn't make it from one town to the other and just live on my own rules but I think Dell's like I don't know if there were a society somewhere that was halfway decent , where I didn't have to deal with my dad attacking people at random , including me and my brother . I'd like to be a part of that . Maybe I'll be mayor one day .
You know what I mean . Like Wayne never thinks he's going to be mayor or would want to be mayor , or what the hell is everybody talking about ?
No , no and I want to . I agree with what you're saying about Wayne . I think you're using him in a certain context . I don't think Wayne sees himself as an outlaw per se , but I know I think you're using it like outlaw Josie Whales style , Like I am a cowboy on my own .
Oh , yeah , yeah yeah , I don't mean like Robin Trains . You're saying outside the law , not someone who fractures the law Right right right .
In many ways he is in the law Right right . You know he's the . He's the person that keeps people from standing at the top of the stairs . In certain ways he's got more into common with boss in that way .
But in general on this trip what we've seen is Wayne is mission based and goal oriented and Dell is process oriented and you know she's sort of enjoying the journey and she's open . Having not seen that much over on the shithole in Norton . She's open to , you know , exploring some other things like okay , what is this ?
She was much more open to the college kids in the motel . She's much more available , even though she's standoff at first . She's available to Trish and Jenny and so it's a difference between Wayne , who is comfortable with his outsider status . So now we're at Charlotte , north Carolina , and this is the first time we have seen who boss .
This is the first time we've seen but whole Tommy Cole with his travel companion .
Orlando , that's right . And they're in a hotel room , a crappy generic hotel room in North Carolina , right ?
So a crappy hotel room , although when Orlando comes out wearing a robe which I cannot imagine that this hotel would actually supply that robe this feels like one of those . It is better than a motel eight , but it is not up to . We're going to put a robe in your room standards .
I don't know where you got it from , but he says this hotel's on some four star shit . Orlando like no judgment because my very sheltered family when we were younger and my hippie mom didn't prevent us from eating , but we ate vegetarian for the most part .
When we were very little we didn't do a lot of fast food or processed food because she was a crunchy granola mom before . It was cool . My older sister went out with some neighbors when she was like five or six and came back to tell us about a very fancy restaurant that she went to called Burger King which is for .
Roy that's what you're .
apparently she was like oh so they had so many options . So like this is just a matter of not knowing , just not being exposed to it .
Yeah , it's great . So you take a . How are you going to bring him back to the farm coach once they've seen Charlotte , north Carolina .
Can't do it .
They've been out there now . So Bobby Cole says unless they're .
Amish , then they come running back apparently .
I don't really understand that . After their walkabout , what's it called ? Rum Sprig , rum Sprig , yeah .
There you go .
But Tommy Cole says take it , take the soap , take everything , I don't care he's so , he's a real treat . So Orlando .
Wait , do you not take the little hotel options ?
No , no , no no , what I'm saying is I don't know .
I take them every time , I don't know . Yeah .
I don't know . I think it's kind of expected honestly , yeah , yeah , they definitely know it .
And I need , oh yes , and I need everybody to be clear and it's specifically because I put those tiny little lotion bottles into my purse and then , when my excessively dry hands are excessively dry when I'm out and about , I just have it . It's the perfect size , it's not even a matter of the cost .
I just love that perfect little size . That's just shit that comes out of a vat , though it's like comes out of a tub .
Oh it's garbage .
Yeah , it's total it's like it's probably carcinogenic and I go eh .
Maybe . Yeah , I mean , I don't need . Yes , it prevents my hands from getting like scaly in the winter . So , it's fine , I will take the cancer .
This is also a bit of a cultural moment because , like I can't do the thin , like that's actually like a thing black people talk about , is like I can't use that kind . I can't use that watery lotion , like I like I literally use like cocoa butter that you take out of like a solid tub and I don't .
Yeah , so I'll use that in a pinch , but I just expect that to get me like from like 1030 to lunch when I can like see , go off and get some lotion , oh yeah .
Oh , no , no , no , no , no . Yeah , this is . I should also mention that this is when I get out of the shower . It is a layer of either cocoa butter or coconut oil .
There you go .
And then it is Vaseline lotion , and then it is another like shower oil thing to set everything in . So this is like on my hands because it's cheap and I can't . But no , I don't , I don't put , I don't put that garbage on my body Gotcha .
It's because , even though I can't eat hot stuff , my body secretes cocoa butter , so just naturally . Interesting . Yeah , yeah , I'm going to put it on myself .
Is that the ? Is that the real reason ? You can't have a dog because it would just be licking your face constantly .
That's it . It's the job for both of us Damn it .
Yes , all right , so Orlando is chipping the . There's one TV in the room . I love the attention to detail because it's one of those TVs , like when flat screen started , where it's thick and annoying . You know , it's like the crappy thick SD , like standard definition . Quote unquote flat screen TV . Orlando tips it away towards his side of the room .
And what's he trying to do there , coach ?
He's scoping out the , the porn offerings which you know , and he's actually makes some . Some of his like comments and suggestions do seem to be driven by the , the highlights he's seeing in the coming attractions , which I found funny .
Now , if we just want to refresh people's memory , that Tommy call us down there for a teacher's conference trying to get a grant for equipment for the school right .
For technology . Yeah , technology Right .
So Orlando is kind of , you know , coaxing him to go write his speech and Tommy's like yeah , well , I've got ironed some shirts and I got to do this . You know , Orlando's looking at a movie called squirty dancing and semen biscuit , trying to pick one out like you do .
I mean , listen , like I'm not approved in any way , internet porn . I understand how it exists and why and everything else . I got to tell you the parody puns from porn movies . It's . It is a lost art form . It is a shame . It makes me sad
¶ Movie Cliffhanger and Speech Procrastination
. I think the movie cliffhanger was vastly . Oh yes , I do , wet dreams may come .
That is very , very good that is my favorite . That's next level . I have not heard that . I'm down .
I'm trying to think of a good one , but I'm not going to come with anything . No , you can't compete with that . The one I was going to say was Ram .
Bone which . I thought was old school , one that I was like a punchline one .
But one of my favorites here , boss , another favorite just a few good men . It works on both levels . You don't even need to change it up in that case .
That's good , that's good . So quality . So Orlando realizes as he's talking that Tommy hasn't written this speech yet . He , oh shit , you haven't started your speech yet . What , yes , I have . You don't need to talk about it . I'm not going to talk about bed . I do the same thing .
When I have a big paper , do I clean my room , take out tiny fuzzballs off my sweaters . And what does Tommy Cole say ? He's very defensive here , coach . What does he say ?
I wrote it . Okay , Basically it's all up here . And if any of you are seasoned procrastinators because I'm not talking about you folks who sort of have dabbled in procrastination I'm talking about oh , this paper was already . Do I should get started level procrastination , the . I've got it all up here thinking . I've been thinking about it , or is the agree ?
that counts towards the class . Oh yeah , Absolutely Obviously .
That counts , that it's up in my head and , of course , it always translates perfectly when you write it down . If you just store it all in your head and think about it and then just start typing , you'll be astounded by the magic that ensues .
Yeah , it's just a basic transfer protocol .
Oh yeah .
It perfectly forms speech in your head to the paper .
That's all . It's basically like creating a PDF from your brain , basically .
It works every time , coach . But yeah , you're right , that is it and also a offshoot of the people don't make changes in their life until they have to . It's a version of that and also the wishful thinking that the cavalry is coming when it never hits . You're going to have to write that speech . Orlando says why don't you go relax by the pool downstairs ?
And you know .
Women girls take baths . I mean it's just , it's really . They really had a good time with this one . I mean they're really having fun with this .
Orlando is trying to usher Tommy Cole out of the room . How we call starting to like think about the concept doesn't even matter what I say . Whatever you get a grant like it's kind of love . This is so familiar to me because it's like the mentality up here . You know , it's just like this defeatist sort of like fuck this .
That's exactly the right word .
You know what I mean ? It's just this .
But there's something inside of him , but it is something inside Tommy Cole that understands he doesn't really want to be there . It's the part of him that cried for his dog . It's the part of him , right Like there's part of him that keeps trying to reach Wayne .
There's part of him , there's a little piece of him that's like but there could be happiness , right Like he's miserable and he accepts it , but he also , like , holds on to this little sliver . It's like his little happiness lottery ticket . Yeah , like could come in , I could find some happiness somewhere , or at least even identify some .
So , yeah , it's kind of interesting to watch him navigate that , because it's not . He is defeatist , but he's not 100% defeated , from the way I read him at least .
It sounds a little bit like you're saying it's the hope that saves them .
Oh , look at you , boss , aren't you clever ? Oh , who brought the clever clock over here ? That is very good , boss . Yes , but you're right , I actually think you're onto something with that coach he . There's something good inside Tommy Cole , but whole Tommy Cole yeah .
He hates the kids , but he understands , like something is dying inside of me that allows me to hate these kids , like what you know what I mean . Like when he said it , it's all experiential .
So it's like maybe he was optimistic once upon a time , but every single thing in his adult life has shown him the futility of that way of thinking . But yet he's still somewhere . There's a kernel of belief that , yeah , no , you're right . He says we're not going to get that grant . And even if we did , what happens ? Coach ?
You know what those kids are going to do with the technology it buys . They're immediately going to break it , steal it or pour chocolate milk into it , which , having taught and the school where I was was not a you know , everybody break the technology . You know , oh , fancy pants , private school .
But like that general feeling around kids and like you know that he has had to try to dry out some piece of technology a keyboard , whatever it was that someone chose to pour chocolate milk into , like not spill it onto , that's different . Somebody thought ha , ha , ha ha . And then poor Tommy Cole had to figure out how to deal with that .
So it just made me laugh out loud . This poor guy has been beaten down by being a principal of this Right .
Yeah , that's the point why this doesn't matter . Orlando , who's looking at babysitters ? Chub is . He says you know , they have a son down there to just ignore them and trying to still move them out . Tommy Cole says maybe you're right , we should brainstorm some ideas . He has a seat . What have you got ? He says to Orlando .
And Orlando , just like , he just sighs and gives up with the , you know , with the gentle persuasion and boss , what does he say ?
He says dude , could you just go downstairs so I can watch my porn movies ? Phenomenal .
Like this is a student and the principal .
What is happening ? He's sitting there in some robe , like this is so bizarre , but we know what's going on , so it's like , oh okay , it makes perfect sense in this .
But what , yeah ? Yeah , it's completely insane . And so it's just one of those things where there's such great writing Because you're like oh , that's the punchline , this is the there you go , there's the punchline . And then Bobby , bobby , bobby . Tommy Cole absorbs this , looks away , shakes his head and what does he say ? Boss , please get dressed .
Fantastic .
As if he is just noticing right now , even though Orlando said this is some four star hotel shit . It's like oh , you're wearing a robe and you're talking about watching porn . I am not your guardian .
Yeah , this is going to bat yeah . Yeah , yeah , it's great .
So you're ? I want to make sure I understand this You're going to let me , a man you've never met before , take your child over state lines . Exactly that's how we got here with Orlando in the first place . Like what is happening , we cut to a tight insert shot of of like someone drawing an eye Like a how would you describe it ?
It's almost like a glam rock sort of eye or something cool about this , a Ziggy Stardust sort of eye . I'm dating myself , but it's it's funky as hell .
I'm sorry , I'm just noticing that we just got done talking about a butthole , tommy Cole , and a teenager watching porn movie , porn movies . And you said we get a tight insert and Orlando did not come through with a . We can't talk about that at work . He's slipping , he's slipping boss .
Hi guys , I'm not up to .
It's a toxic work environment has worn him out . I mean , come on , I'm sorry . So we have that insert of the , of the drawing , and then we have people carving into the table saying fuck you , and well .
I wouldn't ignore the , the , the , and I'm going to say it's quite intentionally this way , because the way we introduced to it when it was on a truck somebody's carving tits into the table first and then we get fuck you .
Yes . I was thinking they're each sort of carving something . The girl known as Trish is car is drawing the the really good sort of I thing . The girl we know as Jenny is doing the boobs and Dell is carving in fuck you into the table and they're still talking in the library and they're trying to figure out who the hell .
Dell is and like what , like what's her deal ? Right ? And what do they say here , boss ?
So are you doing anything tonight ? Oh , fuck , yeah , dude , good call Our super lame ass . Spring fling is tonight . So they saw her once . They asked her to hang out . She was like fuck off . Basically , how the hell do I get out of here ? None of your business . And they're like oh OK , do you want to come to our prom with us ?
Please , not just come to our prom , but come as a lessee thrupple with us , like you are our date .
So I wandered here and it's , on some level , absolutely zero of my business . But I was like so are they ? Ok , that's how I'm going to ask it . Are they actually lesbians ? Or are they in a town where they've looked around at each other and thought , fuck this place and fuck these people and their clothes , minds and blah , blah , blah ?
We really really love each other . I don't even know what I fully mean by it , but it seems like it's almost like part of their weirding the place out . The girl looks over and she does the . I don't know . There's something that feels a little performative about it . It's almost like they're identifier . I don't know .
I may be wandering into a bad space , but Well , no , it sounds I understand what you're saying actually very much , because there is an element where you don't want it to sound like oh well , these young lesbians who are in love don't really know what they're talking about .
And I don't mean that , that's not what I mean . And you don't mean that .
Yeah , yeah , yeah there are plenty of times where actual real life couples in high school are in love and are doing things to each other that couples do to each other . And then sometimes there are very close female friends who everybody else is like oh , you guys are so why do you guys love each other so much ? You must be banging out or something .
You must be just totally being less than a couple each other .
That's what I was wondering .
Yes , and it's a question of are they actually a couple who are dating and having sex , or are they best friends who have taken on the mantle of ? If you're going to think we're weird , we're going to be weird .
Thank you , because I didn't want to be canceled , Like I'm just living my life .
Yeah , no , no , no , we can't cancel you . Thank you , and honestly , I'm not sure which one it is . I feel like the vibe they give could theoretically go either way . I also think that there's something as could they . Yeah , yeah , there we go , yeah , like , and also it almost doesn't matter , because either way they're just big personalities .
And if they are lesbians , they're the Megan Rapinoe in your face . I'm having fun day and night type . You know what I mean . But both of them are . They're both on all the time , 24-7 , they're on . And so even if they're play acting great , if their lesbians great , it almost doesn't matter , because they're just awesome and having a fucking blast .
And now they try to figure out what , what's going on with Dell ? They're like how about you ? You got a girl , a guy , anyone ? And this is , this is again . It was like you guys were both smiling because you know what she has and what does she say .
She has a wing . Yeah , I don't know .
That's fantastic . And they're like what the fuck is a wing ? And then we hear on cue tires screeching and the sound of a dirt bike .
So here's a question I have about this moment , because it was there was a perfection to it . I want to understand why it wasn't cheesy .
And actually I'm really asking that because I could 100% see 99 of 100 versions of this moment of I'm supposed to buy that on cue with this conversation , screeching tires and what we're about to discuss and being like I roll , let me the fuck out of here . How do they manage to do it in a way that made me buy it , enjoy it , cheer for it ?
Like I could rewatch that 10 times , Like it was just fun , and I'm not sure how they do it . Is it just that we know the characters that well by that point ? Is it just because we've seen him be so wild that actually him riding a motorcycle or motorbike through a high school isn't really that's not the craziest thing we've seen him do ?
Like you know what I mean , Like I'm just trying to figure out why .
Yeah , like I'm trying to figure out why I bought it , because in a nut I could see giving the note to somebody on this script like it's a little much , it's a little much .
¶ Suspension of Disbelief in Contrived Plots
I think that this is actually when suspension of disbelief works best for contrived plots . There are sometimes where and I think they're not the rule in terms of movies , but especially my dad would always say like you can set whatever rules you want to within your story , but then you need to abide by your own rules .
So if time travel exists .
OK , fine , so we're into time travel , but then the time travel needs to make sense and you can't just have people popping up .
That's right .
Really , nearly because you have time , travel Like there are still rules . So the rules in this universe are Wayne does not give a fuck , except for maybe Dell , and when Dell needs him he will be able to show up . So I think that it works because it abides by those rules .
That's right Like .
Wayne is not going to give a fuck about rolling into school on a dirt bike . The timing might be a little bit off , but we're willing to allow that because it's still a fucking story at the end of the day .
Yeah , no , that's a good . Yeah , I'm into that , and they've done it consistently . They show up right on time in each other's lives and then we've watched them show up right on time whether somebody is about to get killed with a chainsaw or we've seen it , so I buy that .
And also they've never established boyfriend . Girlfriend . She's like , we're not going to take it slow , we'll do whatever , but there is no title for what they are doing . Compared to everyone , it's like . So she does have , in lieu of anything else , she does have a Wayne and Del on cue .
There's a lot of a lot of established shots of everybody hearing the sound , and then we push in nice camera , move on Del as she knows what's going on . She rolls her eyes , grabs her stuff , grabs her jacket , did you ?
enjoy the eye roll as much as I did , because I thought , that was great , Like oh Wayne , here we go .
I know what this is .
That's the look that Daphne makes . When I like tease some little kid with the same joke , I tease kids with the last 20 years . Yeah , but she's doing it because he's riding a motorcycle through a motorbike through a high school , like that's her like , oh , wayne .
Right , that's Wayne , because everyone else is wondering what the sound is and Del knows exactly what the sound is . She goes and snags her bag while the librarian's back is turned and we get the establishing shot . We know it's coming , which is Wayne riding through the high school locker room .
They even give us the benefit of subjective camera right in the front of his handlebars , so we see like his top gun-esque turn through the aisles , the lockers on both sides , standard American high school fare . He is looking everywhere for Del . She waits for him and he sees her . She's right at the door .
Helmet pops on and they're out , right as the girls Jenny and Trish barge out of the library . What do they say , boss ?
I guess that's a fucking Wayne .
Great line in that whole sequence and they seem they are legit like please be our new best friend . They'll be like you have introduced a level of chaos to this school that was much needed . Like they are really into it , and so I enjoyed that too .
Yeah , you have these girls who you're like . Oh , they're not going to end up in Richmond . I'll tell you what . They're going to be in a bigger city , but I guess they're in somewhere in Georgia .
They're heading for Atlanta . They're heading for Atlanta At the very least Like you know what I mean .
Like they're just . Their personalities are too big for this . Now we cut to the true , the oh OK , Now this is interesting . Now we cut to OK . We just saw for the first time we saw Orlando and butthole Tommy Cole , which is I'm going to continue to refer to him that way because I like that . That's the principal's nickname as established by Wayne's father .
Let's remember that that's where he got that name . And now we cut to an insert of Wayne and Dell on launch here , so it looks like a shot from the motel right .
That somehow . That's exactly what it was .
Somebody's got a Polaroid picture of the two of them there and when we pull out he says , oh , is this the ? Is this ? This is a question right here , right , and is this the boy you had the little kerfuffle with ? And we hear Sergeant Geller's voice Like wait where ? What's going on here , mm hmm ?
Right , somebody's been doing some sleuthin .
Right , he somehow managed to get a picture of Wayne Dell taken by , I'm assuming , one of the college students there , and he is . He is hunting . Now that you're up , who's he talking to , boss ?
He's talking to the asshole who got his hands punctured a couple of weeks ago . What's his name ? Eric , maybe ?
Yeah , whatever his name is .
The asshole from the construction site who was going to turn all of his employees into immigration , I thought , and then got crucified .
Oh , sorry about that . Yes , got crucified , truly . But I thought it was also telling that the question was rephrased . I think it is deep . It's very significant that we get the boy with the little kerfuffle and then we get I'm trying to remember exact words right the man who put the nails used the nail gun to puncture your hands or whatever it was .
It was a much more factual description of the event and so I thought that I thought that was a significant keeping us in reality that we may love Wayne , but he means the dangerous criminal who nailed gun your hands to a van .
So I mean we may love Jay is saying Officer Jay right .
I mean he ain't wrong . I mean that is what happened , so both things can be true , Like there's nothing he says there that is incorrect
¶ Understanding Wayne's Motivations and Actions
. Wayne is dangerous , Wayne is a criminal and Wayne did nail gun this guy's hands to a van . I mean these are all real things . So the boy with the kerfuffle might be a little sweet way to say it .
Well , I actually love so much that you pointed that out , because there is an aspect where we understand not an aspect we understand why Wayne did what he did , and that's because the son of a bitch deserved to have his hands nailed onto a van . And even if we didn't think that it should be done , we understood that he did deserve it .
But everything that Wayne has done , that we've seen him do like he hit a kid in the face with a trumpet and the blood splattered . We saw that happen .
Yeah , no , these are real things Like yeah yeah , and so it is one of those things where , depending on your perspective like on the one hand , bobby Luchetti is a fucking dick who has repeatedly attacked teenagers because he's a bully and doesn't give a shit .
However , if you phrase that as a man chases down the assailant who took his daughter when the cops refused to do anything about it , you'd be like , oh , what a great guy , what a loving father .
So I think it is important not just what happens , but how we tell ourselves about what happened and how we frame it , and keeping in mind that , because we know Wayne and we know his code , we understand what he's doing , but if we didn't know his code , we would assume more shit , and maybe we should assume more shit in some cases , like motivations are not
more important than what happens , but motivation is really important .
Yeah , no 100% , and I think yeah . But I think staying grounded in like this is not the same thing . But at one point when I was coaching a high school girls basketball team I've talked about this team before and one of the girls and not surprising it was her brought up as I was going over rules .
She's brought up what if we're on the court and some girl pushes and then , basically , can we defend ourselves ? But when you're the person in the group who , provoked by nothing , brings up , can we defend ourselves ? My instinct is I probably need to address whatever I'm about to say directly to you , and so I said .
I said listen , let me make something perfectly clear . Here is the rule in this school no tolerance , zero tolerance . If there's violence , you are going to be punished . Now let me tell you who I am , and I did just like this . I said if you defend yourself and commit an act of violence , truly defending yourself , you will not be in trouble with me .
I said but I am not in charge of this school and I am not in charge of LA USD . I'm in charge of anything except this team . So just keep in mind that if you're defending yourself that's what it is you will be in trouble . You will be in trouble with me , but you will be in trouble and they seem to accept that and we kept it going .
But it kind of feels a little bit like what we're saying away . Right , it's like as a rule , we are not allowed to nail people to vans and you may get in trouble for that . Am I happy to have seen you do it ?
Absolutely , but I'm not in charge of that I want to talk about how one of the great reasons why I love this show and why it feels refreshing and different I was reading the other day about how , after Roe V Wade was overturned which was a terrible , nightmarish thing I was reading about long-term goals for the people who did that , and one of them was to make
it so that it became the new normal , so that people would forget it would last long enough , fight it in court long enough , so that people forgot the rights that they had .
¶ Political Climate and Character Analysis
It's happened now , at least in American politics . I know this has happened all over the world with the rise of strongmen in various places all over the world where a certain expectation of statesmanship has been removed from people who are in the public eye . So you would say I want to be a public servant , I would have to be respectful or have to do this .
Now it is bald-faced lies every day , all day , sunrise to sunset , with what feels like no consequences . So that's the new normal in politics and it's exhausting for people because now , instead of going about our lives , we have to track it .
It becomes part of our lives where we have to say , all right , now we have to get involved when once upon a time we did . One of the reasons why I think Wayne is so effective as a show is because justice by and large is hard to find these days , except in very quick , little , bite-sized doses , in these little vignettes . So is Bobby Luchetti a good guy ?
No , but did it feel like justice when he put that asshole in the Lamborghini in his place ?
It did .
It felt like a little slice of junk . Is Wayne on the right side of every situation ? No , but did a guy who was going to take advantage of immigrants and turn them into detention centers getting his comeuppance ? Did that feel like justice ? It did . And so you have these little bite-sized morsels .
And , lest we forget , with clever people you can always have a commentary when there's no commentary . So I think Wayne is one of those shows where , regardless of your political leanings , it could appeal to everybody . But if you look a little harder , you would say like there's a statement in here .
For example , when Geller and Jay tracked down the unrepentant racist scumbag that was crucified by Wayne , where is he from ?
Fayetteville ? Yeah , is Fayetteville , north Carolina , is what you're telling us ? Oh Gee .
I wonder why . I wonder why that was chosen . Yeah , Is that good people on both sides , right boss ?
You know what ? I did not profit that I'm just saying .
It's just buried in plain sight .
So hidden in plain sight .
So he means the dangerous criminal who nail gunned your hands to a , van Jay says , because Fayetteville is still on the side thinking that Wayne is a dangerous criminal . And the Eric Jerk face guide . The two guys who wore actual uniforms , the other cops . I told them everything I know . His cell phone rings , he drops it , geller picks it up .
His hands are all bandaged so he can't function on his phone and Geller doesn't give it to him right away . But Geller sees what this is what I'm saying . Okay , now listen , I have a certain take on Geller , but I also have the benefit of having seen the entire show .
When you guys first met Geller , I think the general consensus was he's got a service weapon on the stand .
Yeah , he was a mess , he was a man , right that to me ?
yeah , Right . Okay , do you still feel that way or are you starting ?
to no , no , no , no , no . I mean he's still not . I don't think he's like a superhero , but he definitely is smarter . He is way smarter than I thought when we met him , literally with his hand down his pants .
That is how we were introduced to him with this hand down his pants . Yes , that's fine .
I think that for me , there was an aspect of listen .
I understand that there are a lot of very good law enforcement professionals and I'm not trying to talk shit about all of them , but I also know that there is a specific brand of asshole who wants to be in charge of everybody and make everybody else respect the fact that they are in charge , who goes into law enforcement .
This isn't even how I like to follow the rules and I like when everybody else follows the rules . This is the . I get to tell you what to do and I am validated by being a law enforcement professional . He is not that he doesn't want to tell people what to do . He genuinely does seem like he wants to help people and investigate and knows how to do it .
I never thought that he was incompetent . I just don't think that he is there . Like if he had to break up a party that teenagers are throwing , he'd be like can you kids all please get home now ? Can you get home safely ? I don't want to take you to the jail . Can you just fucking leave ? Yeah , can everybody go home now ? Yeah , yeah , yeah yeah , yeah .
That's his speech which requires what , which requires , like one foot , oh , a lot of intelligence . Well , intelligence , sure , but yes , no question Empathy perspective . Experience , intelligence and awareness of what the real situation is , as opposed to what the rigidity of the law and how he has to operate .
He would be like that , but that's exactly right , because he'd be like come on , like , just I know what this is , the kids are fine , just let's . Now it's got to be over and let's . So I actually I think you're 100% right . I know what happens here on the show , but I like that you're on this track and that's a good place to be Notice .
In this scene he says I'm assuming the hiring circumstances were similar to these gentlemen's , because he's not an idiot . He is watching this right In real time . How smart do you have to be to know what the fuck I'm looking at right here ? You know what ?
I mean , and what I also love about it , and a kerfuffle , right , Maybe a little light , but he has really started to put together like this guy Wayne , Like there's a lot I want to say . It's in Godfather , it isn't Godfather 2 , but they're talking about this guy and they say I did some looking into this guy . Blah , blah , blah , blah .
He's good with a knife , but only matters of business . I always remember when they said that about him . I thought it was like a really interesting thing to have said about you . This guy isn't going to just go around like just cutting whoever's in sight , but in matters of business , right .
And there's something about Wayne that's like he is a violent motherfucker , but only in matters of justice , Like he's not just rolling around knocking people out , but so he's like . So what was the injustice ?
What could the injustice possibly have been that got Wayne to nail you to a van , Like I know there's a missing piece to this story , because Wayne doesn't just do shit like that .
Yes , he's open to this . But also , like I just love the play against type , because when you talk in modern television and cinema , you talk about oh , boston's a Boston guy , right , automatically he's got to be an Irish meathead . It's like they have taken one like a 12 square block section of South Boston , right , the way it used to be 30 years ago .
By the way , now it's all renovated . Everyone that used to live there has moved out because they've been priced out of it and it's all renovated homes that are , like you know , four million bucks each .
So it's a whole different thing , but they've made it seem like everybody in New England is this one thing , because , you know , massachusetts is one of the bluest states that there is . I think Cambridge is the bluest city on the planet . I think is the most liberal . I think we take a lot of pride in our , in the ratings of our school systems and whatever .
So I just like that they picked a cop that wasn't like a generic , you know , boston , yeah , boston cop kind of guy .
So quick ? Have I talked on the show yet about when I went to Boston and did a tour of your beautiful city . It was great . It was a bus tour , had a lovely time .
May have mentioned it , but I'm a fresh memory .
It's just that the tour driver , who was great and very well informed and I really enjoyed , did mention at one point Boston is an entirely manmade city , and I thought , well now , what he meant was they had changed the topography of the era so much that they created a land where there had been ocean and shoreline and everything else .
But anytime anybody says Boston , now I think , oh , it's manmade .
Yeah , unlike all those other ones . I don't know if they're fucking silverbacks designing anything around here . No , no , no zebras .
This is , this isn't an organically grown city Fucking men builders .
Thank you , that's it . That's it . I think that's some of the most depressed men on the plane , but Geller is . He's a smart man .
That's all I'm saying In his own way , as much as we can take sort of have a knock on him for how we introduced him with his hand down his pants and being very distracted by the potential loss or just by the awareness of his own possibly threatened mortality in that moment , that he might have to stick to a cancer .
¶ Discussions on Mustaches and Dave Grohl
This was something that was sort of a knock on him in the opening . But he's looking around , he sees what's happening here . The guy Eric's like I didn't find him on LinkedIn , if that's what you mean . And Geller's like did you pay him ? Of course I fucking paid him . This is what I get for it . Right , this little . It's kind of just a great job .
Let's call out the actor . Hold on , let's see . The actor is Maxwell McCabe Locos . Maxwell McCabe Locos plays Eric , who is the underpent racist dirtbag . He does a great job , Fully believable .
Like seriously , because I despise him . I feel like I've met him . Oh yeah , Like I feel like I've met this man and somehow his mustache is a part of the performance . I can't say anything clearer than that . But that mustache tells me I 100% buy that this guy did exactly what we want him to . I don't know why , but that's how I feel .
This is just a slight rant about how old I'm getting now , because there used to be a time when a mustache meant that guy , not facial hair . I'm a big fan of a full beard Great . I don't really love a goatee , but a full beard is fantastic and I'm into it .
A mustache used to tell us you were this guy , and now a mustache could mean you were dating Taylor Swift , and I just want to tell the kids that it's confusing to me as an elder millennial that all of a sudden , everything I've ever known about mustaches has changed . And now it's not like .
I will not stand for this Magnum PI or Tom Selleck or Aisha , I don't know . Hold on , I don't even understand what's happening on this podcast .
This is what I'm saying , though , because literally 35 years ago , when I was a small child , magnum PI made mustaches cool , and then people started doing them who were not Magnum PI , and then the mustache became not cool , and now it's wrapped itself back around again , and I was not prepared for that , right .
Right , okay , so you're going to change with the times boss , I get it . No , I can't though I know I know , I know . But I know that's a real thing . I would like to make a brief caveat . I believe that from time to time , dave Grohl has rocked a mustache only , and that is acceptable , and that's it .
He's so cool I would pause it for the benefit of just this show that whatever . Dave Grohl does is fine , right . I mean like , yeah , good for him . Yeah , he's really really really cool .
So fucking lasers coming out , man , it's amazing .
There was some Dave Grohl shade . You know I'm in love with that book series . We did a very special episode on Dungeon Crawler Carl and in it there was one . There's a little shade I thought sent that Dave Grohl was like this one AI voice .
That was like basically like , oh you know , like when someone tries to be a lead singer one really they're just a bassist or whatever . I was like huh is that ?
Hmm , I don't know , Hmm , they better not be , because drummers are always the best in the band . I always love the drummer the most .
We can talk about that . It's a conversation .
Yeah , I do that's . It is an interesting conversation . I prefer who chooses what . But quickly I will say about Dave Grohl and this is part of why I like him as much as I do honestly is that I saw an interview with them and I wish I could place it .
I'll try to find it , but he he was talking about where he got some of the things he does as a drummer and he talked about the out there . There you go yes . And he went with it like the Gap Band or something it was some band like that and he like told the drug . He met the man and he said , oh my God .
Like you know the beginning , I want to say it's like smells , like Teen Spirit or something .
It was a big song .
He goes . I got that from you , like that was from the disco blah , blah , blah and the guy goes . I know .
Yes , it was great .
It was a great story and he told it like you know . Anyway , I thought that it happened and that he told it . Sorry , go ahead , boss .
No , no , no . He told it on camera to Pharrell that he was saying like that might be right . Just because there are so many like bizarre and also terrible kind of people hating on disco became a thing that like , unfortunately , South Side white dudes , white Irish dudes here in Chicago had a big hand in because it was like , oh , we're not good , that it's .
You know the terms like fruity and stuff would come up Like it was a little bit gay , it was for not all that Like people all that dancing . So disco became so like passe and fluff and garbage and everything else and fucking Dave Grohl who helped kick off the entire run like alternative , I was like no , no , I've been lifting shit from disco forever .
The opening repeats it . It's amazing , we'll post it .
Yeah , we'll put it in the music .
¶ Disco, Detention, and School Conversations
Also musically , disco gets a super raw deal . There's some brilliant like really awesome disco music Like seriously , jokes aside , like amazing singing , great grooves . I mean , you know , some of it was trash like any kind of music , but disco gets , it's coming .
I'm sure it's coming back in some way . The Gen Z is has ABBA at the top of their playlist and you go , oh , that's , that's a good sign , we've done something right . Anyway , we're here with Eric . He is terrible . He says , of course , I fucking paid and this is what I get for it .
You know , this hassle of all these Uniform police officers coming over my place work bother me , whatever . He doesn't say that , but it's that that vibe , and he holds up his hands . Now Geller is scrolling through his phone . He's picked up his phone . This is not not necessarily legal , but not quite illegal either , because he just might be passing back .
It's like that sort of gray area . He noticed . He says , well , that doesn't quite add up , does it ? Which I'm like ? Yes , geller , yes , it's a little Colombo , you know it's , it's got a little Colombo . Well , let me ask you one more question .
Yeah , I'm going to get the wrong one , yeah it definitely had yeah . I mean , I'm still not understanding . Right right , right right .
Geller doing his best . Peter Falk , yeah , my goddamn phone back please . And Geller notices like all these calls this one number . And you know , jason , I know you think that he's some kind of angel , but if we ain't that desperate , you know like we're going to have serious problems here . Geller scrolls through the phone .
It says all right , what is this number that he keeps calling ? And , boss , what is it ?
Oh , it's the Fayetteville Immigration Detention Center . Not even like just in general , like there might be some way where he could say well , I work with a lot of people with questionable statuses and so sometimes I have to talk to immigration in general . No man , his local fucking detention center is what he's been calling .
Yeah , exactly Right , it's not , that's a great way .
It's not the office , it is the detention center . Like , yeah , that's a great point .
Yikes , now Eric snags it back from Geller , just holds it up like uh-huh , like what were you saying ? Eric's like lunges and grabs the phone back and Geller says what here , coach ?
You know , I came across a gentleman in Massachusetts who had the darned scheme He'd hire workers with questionable citizenship status and , at the end of the day , instead of paying them , he turned them into immigration . And now we've got a problem , because you totally figured out what the fuck's going on here , right ?
So Eric chuckles nervously I had to be rude , so allow me to translate for our Spanish speaking friends and when he did that , I was like oh , I really did gasp , like I was like oh , you did , you did .
And I was like , oh , boss had the biggest shit eating grin on her face . She's like why not ? Of course , let everyone in on the conversation . Why not All these workers were on me ? I don't mean to be exclusive .
Yeah , so he starts to tell the story of this guy he heard of once upon a time in Spanish . And yeah , it was very good and I love too that the Spanish it was . It's sold as someone who has taken the time to learn some Spanish but isn't like fluent , like anything , like oh , he must be married to you know , dominican or something Like he it was .
But you bought that . He could make it through a simple story like this and certainly communicate to these guys like this guy is going to screw you . So , yeah , I thought that scene went great and remind the moment when he snatches the phone .
I love , because it's like the jig is truly up , like now the three of us now know not just how you're , not just that you're full of shit , but how you're full of shit . Yeah , and I thought you know it reminded me of , remember in the fugitive .
You know the train goes off the tracks and then all the people are investigating and the bus driver is selling his you know heroic story . Oh , I'd have done the same for whatever . And then they find leg irons and draw . It is like hey , you want to ? Would you like to amend your statement , sir ? And he's like what ? And then the black woman goes .
Would you like to change your bullshit story ?
Yes , yeah .
I love that moment and to me , this is what it felt like . To me was like yeah , okay , enough already with the . This is what I get for it , Like we've we sorted you out .
We've wronged black women in this country for so long , but I'm glad we gave that awesome line to you .
Right , it was like you are done brother , you are done .
Now , in this moment , we're talking about Justice porn again . Geller is on the trail . He's picking up breadcrumbs with Jay . Jay is still not a true believer . He thinks Geller might be misreading this thing , but they get to see this and in the end , geller it's not crucifixion , but he has , he will . This man is shut down .
Right , I know he's done .
It is another slice of justice right that before he leaves , he will not let this continue in his wake . It will be right . So in that way too , he is on the same side . He had reached the same conclusion as Wayne did . Right Interesting , we continue . We are outside the school . Dell is leaning up against a tree watching kids play . You know why ?
It's a look . It doesn't show . She's not longingly looking at this , she's just looking . But even in the looking , we know you know what is she thinking of us .
Well , I don't think that she ever makes it so blatantly clear Like you can never exactly breed her , and I don't think that that is an acting flaw .
I think that that is a character choice in terms of Dell is going to keep some things protected , but I do think that this is in the same way that she very quickly took to the college students , or very quickly took to Jenny and Trish .
Like she has a desire to belong , I think Not longing , but I don't think that she wants to Like there is something about the fact that she seems to be drawn to people that are slightly outside of the norm and would like to belong there , which she doesn't want . She's not interested in leaving it to be ever .
She's not thinking about like the perfect fucking picket fence or whatever . She just would like a group where she feels like she fits in Right .
Yeah , it's not that much to ask for , you know it's a reasonable request . So Dell is like sitting there talking to Wayne and says I'm taking you're not much of a school type , are you ?
Because he's not living looking at the school , he's not looking at the kids , you know that kind of thing , and he's like yeah , people didn't like me much and I like him much back , which I kind of broke my heart a little bit .
I thought it was sort of a pretty honest insight and I think it's sadly like the experience too many kids have in middle school and high school and it's partly a byproduct of where people are developmentally at that age and the Lord of the Flies sort of environment that some places can be .
But also it's how , when you have a , you know one size fits all uniformity to your schooling . It doesn't offer any deviation from the norms . You have kids who need a different type of education . You have kids that need you know , that are visual learners . You know kids that are not neurotypical .
So then they end up being marginalized or left out or misunderstood or whatever . Whatever the case may be , because we tend to homogenize everything and oftentimes teach to tests and things like that and to certain standards that aren't necessarily applicable to everyone . I think it opens up a can of worms .
But this is a really honest response from Wayne , where he's like you know , just , I didn't like me and I didn't like them . And she says me neither , I don't know . Schools are always going to be filled with boneheads , you know . So is my school , at least at school , you know so is my house .
I thought yeah , so is my house , yeah , so is my house .
But at least it's really got a decent lunch , got a decent meal . I thought do you remember ? There was a thing during the pandemic where certain people canceled school lunches and people were freaking out and going listen , that's how for some family that's the only place they eat . Well , yeah , yeah , yeah .
Yeah , it was really . It just it made perfect sense and it was so heartbreaking to think that . You know what I mean . It's not for me . It's not that I don't think about it at all , but it's not . It's certainly not something I think about every day .
And when we decided , like bring the kids home from school , I really was thinking about COVID and the safety of that , and I really did have to be reminded that like , hey well , and it's not that goddamn simple , not everybody has like a freezer in their garage to make sure they are all stocked up on what everybody likes to eat .
Yeah , you know like seriously , you know , I mean , but seriously , don't you like ? Every once in a while you're like , hey , privileged boy , like wake up . So yeah , that was .
But yeah , when she said that that did , that was a bit of a shot in the chest , that you know , there were days , and we've seen it right after Don had died , everybody got their own cup of soup .
I'm like that doesn't seem like it's going to sustain you , but OK , yeah , especially the big boys , especially Caroline , ted , I mean big boys eat a lot and you just go , man , that's now .
Now there's a type of person when they see other people being happy , it kind of kicks them into a gear where they're like , oh , that's cool , that like gives them hope , like oh , I might be able to be happy to there's another type of person where when you're unhappy , seeing people happy is like salt on the wound . You're like I cannot get there .
You know what I mean . So it's interesting because we have inserts here of this is subjective . This is from Dell's perspective . She's not in the camera , we just see how she's looking and it's a guy and a girl . Guys got his arm around the girl , young young couple dating hat and smiling , laughing Girls taking pictures of their phone , people playing soccer .
You know they're like in this state of bliss that at least this point in their lives Wayne and Dell have not been able to replicate . And when Dell tried , the worst shit in the world happened .
So it's almost a cautionary tale , like don't try to go outside your the zone of comfort or the zone of happiness that you has been prescribed to you , because bad shit can happen .
There's something about being . The word that came to mind is carefree , and if there's one thing Dell has never been afforded , I mean . Her happiest memory , to this point that we're aware of includes stealing with her mom and being instructed to lie Right Like carefree , and then driving home unlicensed because mom is ripped up .
So like wow , that's like that's her best memory that we have , you know , we are aware of . So yeah , she's carefree , is not ? Something she's ever gotten to be .
Absolutely Well , you can't be carefree when you're not , when you're not safe , and for some of these kids , one of the things we're talking about the meals oh , that's the only place to get a good meal Somebody has , the only place they're safe .
When people are unsafe at home , it is a travesty and it is something that you think Dell's ever got her warning lights off when she's in that house with Bobby as the rulemaker , as the law , as the king of the shithole in Norton . It's not safe .
Yeah , also , because it's like an unreality with him right To get your hands off my daughter you know what I mean Like yeah , right he just says things and he decides this is what it is , and then , like , the entire situation unfolds as if that's so .
Yeah , exactly , you know , and Dell's thinking back about this , saying you know , I was actually good at it . You know , going to school I had a best friend , you know , and I was a child once .
Yeah , no , really right . It kind of means like that , like , oh yeah , I was a kid , I tried it out , it was nice .
Yeah , and what is ? What is Wayne ? Remember what's the best moment of school boss .
I like the pink soap .
The pink soap , just , which is wild .
The pink soap is garbage .
Oh , so bad , it's so good .
But it's terrible , so terrible .
But it speaks to the same thing you said about you know , hitting up the royalty dining room . That is Burger King , right ? I mean like , yeah , if that's the prettiest smell you smell , then that's the height of pretty smells . I mean , that's just it .
He says it smells clean , which I , it seems , seems like , oh , that should be redundant , but there's something about it that definitely has a sense .
Yeah , Well , well , she makes a comment here that I think because I had the same thought . Actually , I thought it was like really well timed to have her think it , because that is the thing he says when we meet them playing house . He's like I never felt so like . I forget what that one was , but again he commented on the soap and how clean he felt .
So I think there's just something about you know , he ain't been that clean all the time . I mean like I think no things around him haven't been particularly clean .
Yeah , it's fun when it's when it's different . I remember I was visiting Vano Adu , my sister's in the Peace Corps , and we brought all these local kids to my hotel room and it was just like do it up , like live like a tourist you know what I mean and they were like the greatest kids in the world .
You know I've raved about the Nivan and the people in that country just best people in the world . But seeing 17 year old , they had bathing suits on and they would .
we had a little pool at the hotel and they jump in the pool and actually believe it or not , this won't shock you that the owners of the hotel were like hey , you know , it's really meant for guests , not meant for locals .
You know right .
Yeah , that was one of the ones where I was like I dare you , I dare you to try .
Finish that thought . Do your favor , finish that thought .
There's so few things that I will fight about , but I was like but anyway , but they were . I remember them like loving the shower , pressure and stuff and it's like it's just a different thing . So yes to them , this was . They didn't have access to this , but it was . It was wonderful to see and this is a little bit of what Wayne has here Smells clean
¶ Books, Social Dynamics, and Outsiders
. You got a weird thing with smells man that says you ever even read a book before . He says just comics count . Jesus , yeah , I read a book before . Yeah , what was it called and what does he say ?
boss , I don't remember . I don't remember what was it about . Werewolves .
Werewolves ? Yeah , of course . Of course . It was about where I figure she says and what else does he say , boss ?
There was a lady who was part tarantula .
Yeah , yeah , of course , so you know , I'm thinking , maybe withering heights was what I figured . Yeah , definitely .
Pride and prejudice .
You know , I had a moment there . I was like am I not remembering what withering heights I should have read that book .
I should have read that fucking book . I was like no wonder I didn't do so great on that paper .
That's great .
That book sounds wild . Right , that's the story I tell my kids .
I'm like do not judge . I remember I was supposed to read a .
Handmaid's .
Tale and it was like handmaids , all sorts of maiden . I was a 16 , 17 year old kid and I'm like , I'm doing that and I'm like , God damn it , I would have like launched me into a whole new row of literature . It's so stupid .
And even a number of times . Now I go , I kind of read that , because when it was high school or college I like banged it out in a day and a half like a lunatic to get ready for some test and didn't really do it , or read half or you know whatever , just check the notes and whatever .
And now I'm like I would take a year of my life and just read all those books .
So they're having these moments here and and Dale's like you know , maybe it was our school , that was just shit , because these kids do not look like they're unhappy . Maybe we went someplace like this would be different . She says , which is ? You know , that's a , that's a bigger concept , that's a bigger thing . Okay , wait , maybe it's not .
You know , it's not just what it was in our little slice of the world . And then , of course , you get Trish and Jenny running up dude , that was the tits . Now they want to be pals with Wayne because they're like you're so fucking cool , they don't know what he is yet and they're just like this is a man .
He's a wade , that's all they know .
That's right . They're kissing their thing Chef's kiss about how much they love the escape . Yeah , you know they're . They're just basically doing the same thing with Wayne as they did with Dell . They're just really like want to be friends with him but he is like freaked out but he does not know how to .
I was like thinking like how many girls has he ever even talked to like this Like ? Or he's had his friend Orlando . We've never seen him talk to any other girl . The first time he met Dell , he invited her in .
Yeah , exactly what I was going to bring up and jumped around like a lunatic . Yeah , to like eight seconds of music . Yeah , yeah .
It's just him and his dad in the house . I guess you have . The nurse was a Trudy the nurse in the beginning .
Right , right .
And I think but but you have like I don't know , like I just don't think he's a lot of experience with this stuff , so he's like standoffish and like has like a what the fuck look on his face and they're like what's up , like it's awkward . Yeah , trish is .
Trish does the thing like nice to meet you like doffs her cat , and I'm like I really fucking dig these . I just think they're . They're just cool and they're fun and in a weird awkward moment they like they like sort of pivot to theater a little bit . I'm like I like to watch this show .
No , I enjoy them . I enjoy them throughout this episode and I also got Wayne and I think it's a little bit of my own . My anxiety helped me to understand this a bit , because sometimes , especially when I first meet people , if they are like super friendly , it doesn't weird me out and then I'm like why are you doing that ?
But it's just like it's more energy that I'm ready for , like it , just like I have been overcome , like I remember this , one time I felt bad because I was like I think she read it on my face and it wasn't oh , I don't want to hug you , it's just , I didn't expect you to want to hug me , so I wasn't coming into this moment to hug , and she like
reached out toward me and you know I was . It was a little bit Startling is too strong , but I definitely reacted . And then I felt bad and I like hugged her because it's like , oh , you're a lovely human being , great , but I just didn't expect that level of energy .
So also from Wayne side , I get that you've been introduced , but I've never seen you before . I don't know who the fuck you are . You come running over here , yelling , talking all out , like I get where he's like what is this ?
Yeah , for sure it's . It is a bit much , but they're again undaunted . So you're coming to spring playing with us and there's like 100% , they made it . We may need you to make an entrance on your bike . Oh my god , we should release doves if we can find them like they're fully . They're just fun . They are just .
They have safety , they have the peace of mind that's right knowing who they are .
That's right .
They haven't had any of the stuff that the other two , and it's it's intoxicating to be around if you're constantly like Del is smiling at this one , like she is she's like this is exciting for her .
Yeah , there is a . It's not just the safety in terms of physical safety .
Yes .
You can find out a little bit financial safety , but also that them being outsiders at this school , where things might be a little bit better than the Brockton schools , means that being a little bit weird is not dangerous , even if they're teased or made fun of or kind of outsiders . It's not outsiders in a way that feels unsafe .
Yeah , they're not going to catch a beat down in the hallway . I mean as much . We talk about what Wayne did , what he intervened . You know . What he stepped into with that trumpet was a kid , that you know . Apparently some kids getting pushed around because one of them had on a neck brace and the other one made the mistake of trying to defend that one .
So you know . Yeah , I agree , there's a psychological safety too .
So , wayne , to further hammer the home the point of what an outsider Wayne is , he's like what ? Like a stupid dance and people dancing to like stupid music and to which , trish , he looks so confused . Okay , what does Trish say at intersponsel ?
Exactly yeah exactly . But but just for shits and giggles , to joke at people ironically , obviously which I don't it's not ironic .
It's not ironic kids like maybe maybe you don't think of it in being the same way as like I'm going to go to prom and then I'm going to fall in love and this is going to be the rest of my life , but you do want to go to a party and dance and that's fine . I think that is also a little bit of the difference .
Wayne is setting himself up to never allow himself to get to a place where it's okay to just go and dance and fuck off and be stupid for a couple of hours . And they're like , no , we're going to go do that , like that's we're going to . And he is still he is the outsider in this .
now Wayne has hard and fast boundaries in certain ways , but he is . He is like lost in other ways . So the next line she says is like we're going to talk shit on all the jocks trying to get it in and then they pantomime bang each other like humping each other .
That's supposed to be like the dancing like that , oh , like Saturday night live night at the Roxbury type dancing . That's what I took . That , as Is that .
whatever it is , it's a sexual is a sexual thing .
Right , it has a taint or sexual to it , and then Wayne is like what in the fuck am I looking at ?
Like like you know what I mean . Like I think he is totally outside his element and don't you need good clothes to get into a stupid dance . Actually , you know what it's cool my dad's girlfriend , we can go to my place .
So they have a whole plan about where to get closed for Adele and and for Wayne , even though Wayne is being weird and jerky that no , they're again undaunted . Oh my God , we can pregame like hard . Oh , we got to do this . We're going to pregame and Adele says I don't know , maybe it'll be fun the way it's just looking at her like she's got three heads .
Yeah , he does not look like maybe it'll be fun , but he does not seem like that's a real possibility from where he's standing .
It's hard . It's hard because it can feel like a betrayal , because like no , I thought we were , we're just trying to get my car and we're not doing that , whatever that . I don't know what this is , but like , this is as foreign as it gets to him . And but he said but nothing , they said sounds like it , sounds like fun .
And one of the girls , jenny , goes no , no , no , we voted seven to three . You're going to just make up some bullshit . You're going now , and that's it , and that's it . So we'll see you later , ladies , and that's it Done .
¶ Character Dynamics in a Dark Show
Adele tries to soften it up , saying maybe they'll have the pink soap you like , and then she's out .
You know it's interesting . I didn't think of it then and I love that as a way to end that scene . But how similar is that Speaking of going out in the world and finding you know the whole ? You know Mary mom , mary dad , bubble boss , stuff .
How similar is that to Donna's dynamic with Bobby , like she's like we're going to their house , you're going to be fine , oh yeah .
No , that's a really good point . Yeah , you know what I mean .
Like she's like yeah , I know Guess who . You're never going to hit with a fucking trumpet Me , so you're just going to do what I'm saying , It'll be OK .
Like she's just like totally un-fucking-faced . Who the fuck's going to pay for all this art supplies you are .
You're going to pay , that's it . Like what ? What are we even fucking discussing ? Like I love this , but she's like it wasn't like . She was like you are , god damn it . Like they were arguing . She was like you are like what ? Like why are you saying dumb things ? Like you're going to pay for it because I said so and because that's it .
So , anyway , I really I like the dynamic between the two of them a lot . Like I've liked it and I just like it more and more every episode .
Yes , thank you , and I take that personally . Being the one who forced you to watch this , I will say also that I really like I've been raving about Trish and Jenny , but one thing I like is that it's a different energy than we've seen on the show . There hasn't been upbeat like where are we fun ?
and who gives a shit Like this is going to be fun , Like not . They don't get mired down in the pettiness or the weirdness of a new kid or your boyfriend's kind of a jackat , Like nothing . There's like , yeah , man , let's have a good time . Like there's something really likable about that , especially in such a dark show . In so many ways this show has .
Even if there's not darkness front and center , there's darkness always around the edges , and so it is nice to see these characters who are just really trying to embrace , you know , their best , their best life , even in the face of having to go to school . And they'll find that the silver lining is sometimes detention has good snacks .
It's that type of out there .
Right , it's all fine , I mean , but isn't that a part of the signaling of the safety too ? Like I noticed Boss pointing that out when we were going through that library scene . But like the fact that detention is a place where snacks are given out , like Wayne got to eat a banana because he stole principal Cole's banana Like that's .
like that's how you get a snack around them parts you know to have here where they're like . Sometimes they have better snacks or worse snacks . If we don't really like the snack , we'll go get our flaming hot Cheetos from nonfiction , like they're . You know they're careful .
Just sort of tying all these things back together . They obviously have been in detention often enough that they have stashed flaming hot Cheetos in a place . Yes , but that in and of itself like them being troublemakers or whatever you want to call it isn't dangerous enough to their futures that they think like that . These are bad kids .
Yes , they get to be naughty , yes , exactly .
Because they have enough safety where , if they get in trouble for skipping school , it'll be fine yeah in Richmond Hill .
Detention is like pizza and sex even when it's bad , pretty good . There's also an element of this episode which is it doesn't completely track with the hero's journey , but this does feel like you know , luke at the cantina . It feels like going to another world and and Della is seeing it it's like , oh wait this , like maybe it's just our shit .
What's the shit ? Maybe it would be so bad because we know she has a zest for reading and for learning and she wants to be in a better place than she is , and so she's your acolyte .
She wants to help people . She said so explicitly .
Yes , she does Right .
Yeah , yeah . Anyway , it's a phenomenal show . We've talked about the structure . They both in this episode they take the whole thing from me midpoints taking that definitive step , and they both very much do they are , they are going .
You can see them choosing the path with each other , but you can also see like they are doing , who they are , like Dell settled in the detention and being like , okay , this is where we are right now , we'll figure out the next step . When it's time for the next step , she hears the engine rev , rolls her eyes , grabs her bag , throws her helmet on .
She's good , all right , I guess it's time to go now and Wayne doing his thing .
So anyway , yeah , no , no , no , it is . It's definitely giving Dell some pause . She's definitely considering what might have been . You know , is this another way to do something ? And the fact that it signals that her mind is open enough to even consider that is a pretty good sign at her age .
So she doesn't end up with Tracy who , you know , the string of bad men , string of bad jobs , you know , never had jobs more than a couple of weeks , and you know she doesn't want to be a middle-aged waitress with regrets .
Yes , because the regrets are the problem there . Being a middle-aged waitress might kick ass , depending on what you're doing and where you're doing it , the regrets are not going to be great , yep .
That's very true . All right , good , we'll leave it there for today . Coach , where do people find you if they want to find you ?
