Ted Lasso Season Finale Rapid Response

Speaker 1

Welcome to our Ted Lasso talk , the Tedcast . Welcome all Greyhound fans , welcome all you sinners from the dog track and all the AFC Richmond fans around the world . It's the lasso way around these parts with Coach , coach and Boss , without further ado , coach Castleton .

Speaker 2

Okay , welcome back beautiful people , Welcome back friends from all over the world . We are here with the big one . This is it , episode 12 of season three . So long farewell . This is your rapid response . I'm your host , coach Castleton . With me is always this Coach Bishop , beautiful , beautiful coach . I love it Anytime you sing .

I'm going to need that today , coach . I'm going to need you to cheer me up a little , and with us is , of course , our boss , emily Chambers .

Speaker 3

I wish that they had just gone for making Beards named Chris . Like , just go coach Chris Beard , just do it the entire way , lean into it real hard . I didn't love the name choice they came up with And we can discuss that in later deep dive episodes , i think , because there's a few name reveals where I've never been like oh , that's so brilliant .

I feel like writers never really get that right .

Speaker 2

Yeah , no , listen , i don't think this is going to be the only thing you're disappointed about , Boss , but that's okay , i'm going to carry a torch for the show . I will tell everybody that . First of all , welcome to everybody . If you're joining us for the first time , welcome . I know our last rapid response .

We broke every record that we had ever made for ourselves . It was sort of stunning how many people are tuning in And we really appreciate that . We welcome everybody in the spirit with which we started this podcast , which was from a place of just absolute admiration , and we were blown away right out of the gate .

Coach Bishop will tell you that the minute he saw Ted doing the running man for the Wichita State Shockers , he was hooked , absolutely hooked , and that Scott Van Pelt little sort of sort of news piece in the pilot . And how far we've come since then , coach .

Speaker 4

I can tell you that I was up on my feet when that was reprised . I was here for all the curtain calls . I was here for it . But yeah , that was . I have been in from very early and stayed in the hallway , so it's been pretty , pretty amazing ride for me .

Speaker 2

If you're joining us and you don't know who we are . we are people who love the show . I tend to tend to be somewhere in the middle . I will focus on things that I love , focus on things I sort of wish they had done differently . Coach Bishop tends to be a real positivist and he is the stalwart defender of all things .

Ted Lasso , and then , of course , we have And then there's me .

Speaker 3

Sorry , i shouldn't have been that blunt . I am the one that I absolutely believe the first season is a full on masterpiece .

I think Beard After Hours is an incredible our-ish of TV , and I think the remainder of the show has moments of beautiful joy and also issues that I don't shy away from because I am the anti Ted Lasso in some ways , and that I'm going to look something directly in its face .

One of my favorite sayings from one of my favorite podcasts is put the tiger on the table and yell at it , and that's what I'm going to do . If there's a tiger in the room , it's getting yelled at by me .

Speaker 2

Well , we really need that on this podcast , boss , because if it was just left up to coach , coach and I would be a real saccharine sweet love fest and nothing would actually be accomplished . So we thank you for keeping it real . Today , as we say , is our rapid response episode . We typically do these huge , long , detailed , deep dives .

That is not today's show . Today we are going to blast through the roughly 30 odd scenes of the one hour and 15 minutes Was it one hour and 16 ? or one hour and 15 ? Anyway , over by about an hour , yeah , hour and a quarter or so of the Ted Lasso finale , which is actually a finale , which is this there's no season for a coach .

Speaker 4

No , there is not , there is not And yeah , we'll talk about it . But this , this , this part of me that is uncharacteristically pleased with that choice . I'm so like yeah , you know what ? That was this story , that was this story .

Speaker 2

Yeah , too often other factors come in the grossness of the entertainment industry and spoil something beautiful . So at least from our perspective it's a .

this is a tight , three tight , three seasons tight and quotes for boss who I know is going to win , sat me But but yes one could say the same about our blasting through , but for those of you who are new , you can go ahead and sit down .

Speaker 4

It's gonna it'll be . It's all relative folks , we're gonna get you in there .

Speaker 2

We're gonna get you in there pretty good . Well , listen team , i want to say we're gonna jump in , but I want to say thank you to our listeners , are listening community , the beautiful people who follow us , the , the amazing buttercups who support us and make this possible . This has been a rewarding experience .

I can't speak for everyone , but I know for me it's been incredibly rewarding to meet so many wonderful people around the world And in a time that has been , there's been a shroud over the world in many ways , in many places , for many reasons , and this has been uplifting to be part of a community that is so in search of something beautiful .

And it's been an honor to to help walk everyone through this . It's been an honor to work here with Coach and with Boss . This is not the end technically for us , because we are . We are behind on our deep tides And so we have to do a bunch of catching up . But I will say I know coach wants to jump in .

I will say that I'm terrible with endings And this is an ending . This is an ending of the show . This is the final episode And in that way it has really cut me to the quick And I am . You're going to definitely hear my voice waiver today And you're going to hear .

I've asked coach and Boss to please jump in because this , this was a , this was powerful for me And especially when I rewatched it , it hit me so hard the second time . And anyway , i wanted to say thank you because I think it's important , coach .

Speaker 4

I guess , and we'll get into so much in search of , i'm glad you , i'm glad you made sure to say it's not , it's not an ending for us , because I very much feel that way And I think that's part of . I'll share more about this at another point , but yesterday I had a child graduate from high school Loxahare in Los .

Speaker 2

Angeles

The Impact of Ted Lasso

And .

Speaker 4

I expected , and have expected for years , that I was going to be an absolute mess and puddle and just embarrass myself and every generation to either side of me , and actually that's not the way the day went And that's not the way this time is going .

I've been more like thoughtful and contemplative , and I would make the argument that part of why this isn't the end in addition to the fact that we've got some deep diving to do , some of which I'm really looking forward to is because , just like Richmond and just like Rebecca , and just really like Ted and beer and everybody we see I mean come on , trent Crimson

like waving his blazer , like a helicopter This where I feel changed , like I actually like it's not every day . I feel like I watch something on a television screen and feel like I've been impacted by it , and this time I do so I don't .

I don't know that it'll ever feel fully over to me , because it feels like , oh , there was how I went in the Ted Lasso and how I was seeing even how jokes can be told and why jokes are told .

And then there's sort of coming out of Ted Lasso and feeling like , oh , wow , really just went through a thing , some of which was like reflecting stuff I'd been feeling but hadn't found a way to say yet or articulate yet . So , yeah , i feel like you know that we are . I am forever impacted by this experience And these conversations .

Speaker 2

I like that . You're finding yourself more contemplative and less emotional . That just means bosses smiling because she knows a joke is coming her way . That just means you've been hanging out with boss too long . That's all that means .

Speaker 3

Yeah , no , that's fair , i'm going to say . being less emotional and I'm putting that in quotes only means you haven't tapped into whatever it is that makes me shout . scream the lyrics .

back at Matt Burningham when he's singing at the National And when you have to sob in front of like 2,500 people at the auditorium because everyone is singing Van der Lye , crybaby geeks , it's just a different experience . You save it all up and then you spray it all over strangers .

Speaker 2

Listen . Whatever works , boss , it could be that it could be . Listen I know music definitely does that that the the surefire way to to get me to break down into a puddle is to play Cat Stevens for any reason , and these fuckers hammered me with it , of course . What a beautiful song , and we will get there .

Gradiaris Firmus , victoria taking small steps towards victory , and this show has done that . It's been a privilege And you know , coach , it's funny thinking about the things in your life that can make you cry just knowing that they exist .

Speaker 4

Hmm , that's right . That's right , man , that's beautiful Man , this was good .

Speaker 2

It's gonna be , it's gonna be tough , it's gonna be tough . Coach , let's jump right in . We have Rebecca in her kitchen watching proper football . Terry on re . We get that whole thing to set up . The shut up Terry on re joke .

We find out basically in this scene the title come down to the last game of the season and that Rupert Manion has been accused of sexual impropriety by his former assistant shocker .

Speaker 4

Yeah , this was the first of my victory laps , like I was just like , yep , got that one right , so yeah . But there was a lot of like , yes , i was in tune with them . So Rupert is , he's got troubles .

Speaker 3

Rupert does have troubles and we can get into this more later . It felt weird that this was a case of sexual impropriety when it seemed like Miss Cakes was very into the relationship . Like it felt like this was an affair with an employee which means that maybe he should lose his job . But I didn't think that it went into the level of like .

I didn't understand why this affair was somehow worse than the affairs he had on Rebecca , other than the fact that he just keeps having affairs left and right .

Speaker 4

Oh , i assumed it was sort of like of the not to name names . But you know , matt Lauer variety , like I thought it was more that kind of deal like she cannot be in a conceptual relationship with you because you are her boss . So I thought I thought that was some of the energy . But I get what you're saying .

Speaker 3

Okay , i am going to be very as much as the show maybe lets me down from time to time . These conversations do not , so I do look forward to the deep dive on that .

Speaker 2

Yeah , we're going to have a big one on that . I mean , listen , I think there's a commentary also like you can cheat on older back up , but you can't cheat on younger back or a newer , but you know , like there's that whole gross element . But anyway , Rupert gets .

it looks like his karma is coming back to to bite him in the ass , which one of the reasons why people play video games is you can level up , you can predict , you can level up , you can get to a thing . If you do the right thing , the right thing happens and it feels safe and wonderful to have that dynamic .

And in this world where so many terrible , terrible people seem to getting ahead and you go , what It is , it is rewarding to start out with a scene where at least some karma seems to be active . Now we go to Rick is so beautiful , by the way Hannah wanting him just sitting in a kitchen . I'm like God damn , what a , what a stunner . Right , You just go .

Jesus Christ , That's not , that's not allowed , That shouldn't be , shouldn't be fair . So we then walk . we get a shot of somebody walking into the kitchen . Who is that boss ?

Speaker 3

That's Ted Ted in his Kansas City shirt saying so . Do we need to talk about this ?

Speaker 2

Right And Ted Beckett , Ted Beckett , truth there's all the world over like about to lose their fucking minds .

Speaker 4

I was in . I was in the different space altogether . Like I actually I , very much stereotypically black , watched this episode with Daphne . just to be , just to be perfectly blunt , there's a lot of talk to the screen , there was a lot of don't know And this was definitely . oh God .

no , i just envisioned myself having to show up here this morning and face boss with Ted and Rebecca having become a couple And I really it was like no , no , you make me work too hard .

Speaker 3

Oh God bless you . I wish you hadn't worried , because the second I saw him in the kitchen I knew it was a misdirection .

Speaker 4

I did not know , you knew immediately second , the bait slept together .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that was . I wasn't sure . I walked in I was like , oh , whoa , whoa , whoa , his hair was messy . I was like damn then you want to talk about it . I'm like what ? So I was like Jesus Christ . But we find out Rebecca's not ready to talk about it .

Then , of course , another person enters and he thinks oh my God , if you're being bamboozled at this point . You think , wait , rebecca , ted and and beard like that . And what is a beard wearing in this boss ?

Speaker 3

So wearing a t shirt and a thong , he's actually wearing a the darkness t shirt , which I appreciate because people do not like the darkness enough . It's a band that was have like two or three hit songs in the early 2000s . One of them called I believe in a thing called love , go look at .

Speaker 2

That's all they have Anything besides that or their other ones .

Speaker 3

There are . I can't remember right now . I only remember that at the time I thought Andrew W K and the darkness were like the best funny bands at the time . Andrew W K did party all the time . Yes , a party hard . Okay , all of his songs are about partying in one way or the other .

Nice , i'll need to go back and review , but all good stuff And he's wearing a thong is the other thing t shirt and a thong .

Speaker 2

And then in walks Jane Payne , of course , morning nerds . we find out there's a gas leak , there's some banter , and we find out that she Rebecca . the key takeaway here is where she refuses to accept that Ted's not coming back , which I thought , hmm , okay , interesting . Is there a little foreshadowing ? Is there a future guest spot on some future show ?

I don't know , the maid walks in the maid . I don't know if that's the . is that a appropriate term is made , a term we use anymore ? I don't know .

Speaker 3

I think Rebecca used the term house cleaner before .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so something like domestic sort of help came in and throw a call back to Luca being naked in the kitchen Hunky , luca , if you're right , remember . She says I'll start in the guest rooms , to which everybody says good and then realizes holy shit And boss , what are the lines that beard says as he runs to stop her ?

Speaker 3

Says those ropes are not garbage . Some of it's dirty on purpose .

Speaker 2

Oh my god , some of it's dirty on purpose , Holy fuck . Well , your bag is just lines up , don't it To you ? y'all's bag is .

Speaker 3

That is . I will deep dive this a lot more later . But as much as I thought this was funny and did like Brendan Hunt in a thong because he does have a dump truck ass , i do feel like they maybe pushed a little too hard and making beard a clown rather than an interesting character with a sort of darker background , it got a little for me .

I know I've mentioned community a lot , but it was more end of the show Professor Chang than beginning of the show Professor Chang And I'm like these are . One is a character , one is a caricature , which I didn't love .

Speaker 4

So for you was that not to go all the way into every moment , but was that this moment , this episode lately Like when you say that I think it's been an overall development .

Speaker 3

I feel like this was sort of a kind of a okay for me . Well , this is it . Gotcha .

Speaker 2

Yeah , well , you know we were . I want to deep dive that we can't , okay . so there's so much to say about that , but we're going to move on Stumbling forward . Ted and Rebecca share a little look He's . by the way , fred Dimitri is wearing Casey current shirt , which is the women's professional soccer team kids sitting .

not the first time he's worn it And not the first time there's been a shout out to women's pro soccer team and much to coaches delight my speaking in the third person . and see , i mean I'm telling you there was a moment where I was out of my seat regarding women's soccer , but we'll get there .

Yes , yes , you knew I would love that , right , you knew I would like freak the fuck out .

Speaker 4

And you knew , and you knew where I would be on it . I'm the person who was like yeah , yes .

Speaker 2

Yes . Yes . I'm not alone in this . Interesting that the the two men are huge women's soccer fans on this podcast and the woman on the podcast has never have you seen a professional women's soccer game there , boss .

Speaker 3

Oh , I have not . I haven't been to a professional sports event in many years now . The only thing I actually and not even pay attention to , but the thing that I will consume is on a Saturday afternoon when they are playing big 10 wrestling meets that is what I will make sure to put on and watch , but other than that sort of gone by the way , got it .

Speaker 2

Got it Not a not a ideal candidate for a sports podcast and not a not a very fun person in general . Okay , so we're going to roll past these six .

Speaker 4

we're going

Episode Recap and Review

to roll . The only thing crazier than how much you give boss is how much she enjoys you give her .

Speaker 3

That's like this combination We have to sometimes feel a little bit bad because I there are times when Castleton will say things to me and I'm like , oh , yes , that is true , that is completely accurate . And then only after the fact I'm like , oh , he was trying to tease me . No , no , my dude . Yeah , come on .

Speaker 2

Yeah , boss , and I have come a long way . We started here . I'm just glad we're still here . You never know . You never know when he's when you spend this much time together , boss . So we go roll through the credits . Now we go to listen when you're .

When I was sitting , juliana was was working next to me on her laptop and was kind enough to sit with me while I watched the episode . It dropped at midnight in the east , which I think was a huge . We'll talk about this later But I think it was a critical error on the part of Apple TV plus . I don't know why they did that . I think it's .

I think it's Gallipoli bad Like . I think it's a blunder of seismic proportions , because it meant half the country couldn't stay up to see it , and then today they're going to get spoiled , but before they even get home .

It's like I have no idea what the what the thought process behind it was , but I thought it was a very , very poor choice , and so , anyway , i stayed up to watch it , and but I didn't want to be alone Because and Juliana knew I was going to be destroyed .

So she was lovingly sat on the couch with me , her feet across me , as as she typed on her laptop And I was watching . And right away you get this . Oh my God , this moment where Nate is the assistant . Well , okay , we have a court court scene . We can't get into it too much . It's more of a deep dive thing .

I make noises sometimes when I'm watching , get so into it And I make these very conflicted noises because Juliana says you know you're making these , you sound like you're having a real conflict when you watch this .

And I said yeah , because I'm not watching just by myself , i'm watching with all the people I know are going to react to this and how I'm going to talk about it in the podcast . And you know , i know who's going to hate this . I know who's going to hate this . This harken back to the Isaac Hare cutting scene And I know who didn't like that .

You know it's like this very stage . You know , sort of set PC kind of thing in the writer's room . It sounds amazing And if it works , you love it . And if and if you're the type of person who is looking for like a more authentic , and I knew right out of the gate .

We started with Terry Henry And I was like , even though it's a nice little soccer knot , i was like it's not the , it wasn't . He's not a fantastic actor , so it was a little . I thought it was a little dangerous way to start . But okay , fine , right away , as soon as you get back to Rebecca in her kitchen .

Hannah Waddingham was a standout performance And I'm going to talk about it . On the deep dive war And I'll talk about it , allude to it this time as well . Her reactions . I thought I was just blown away by her , by Nick Muhammad , by Anthony had .

There were certain performances in this , in this episode , where I was like Jesus Christ , like they are keeping me in the emotional center of this .

Speaker 4

This is not . I went full back to the future , christopher Lloyd , with the orange robe , by the way , because you know I've been driven bad now . I'm out of my mind now . So I saw the orange robe and I was like I will decode this .

Speaker 2

Oh wow , yeah , orange , right , right , yeah , that coach that's . I cannot wait . That's going to be a great episode . The orange and green premise from coach Bishop This is not one of those if you're looking for like , oh , I really want to get to the marrow of the connectivity . No , this was not . this was just a fun little set piece . Courts and session .

there's a series of finds that are handed out . Nate , we find out as the assistant kit man . there's an office reference where he corrects assistant to the kit man . We have this , this beat where each Sam reads things , people , people you know Danny and Jan Maas and people are fined .

all the proceeds go to the final party And we have a beautiful moment where the , the Nate character , goes up to Jamie And we have this callback to when he went there and Jamie was a dick in season one and put gum in the box that Nate had made . And this time , instead of gum , what does he add ? coach ?

Speaker 4

He puts in his share or his fine and then he adds extra money and tells , tells Nate to be quiet about it , puts his fingers to his lips and hasn't not say anything . Yeah which I mean my God , how far , how far could Jamie be from the Jamie we've ?

Speaker 2

it's amazing . Seriously , i would say , if you don't remember , it's worth it to go , but I'm sure many , many of our listeners will rewatch . But you won't believe it when you see it with your own eyes . How , what a prick Jamie was .

You just go wait , how and then , and then to see Nate's reaction to that like he's like just sort of blown away And in a parallel where you can't have a better response to the thing . When they mocked Jamie in the total football video and he yelled I was robbed or whatever . Right When he lost Love Island , they say 5,000 pound fine for Nate .

That is a tremendous amount of money and Nate shrugs it off . It was for missing every game , every practice , everything , huge , vast fine , idiot fee for having left the team in the lurch . And he says yep , makes sense , you got it . Like no , no problem . Which means that the party at Olas will then have an open bar and live karaoke .

I was hoping for a glimpse of that because I really wanted to hear Rebecca sing again , but I know , i think they knew we were going to .

Speaker 4

I knew that they knew that we were going to lean , lean into that one Yeah .

Speaker 2

It's crazy how many connections you can make for all these beautiful moments that we've seen and that we enjoyed . You know , i heard Olas say we didn't say Olas , sam just said the restaurant .

But I think Olas because it might be my favorite character on TV in the last 12 years And I just you just don't get a lot of good dads and and Olas was a beautiful , beautiful , just a beautiful character . But yeah , then we move on to Keely coming into the parking lot and AFC Richmond And then what happens in this scene ?

very quickly , boss , it's not a whole lot here .

Speaker 3

Now she slams her trunk shut and Roy is standing there startling her , similar to season one , when they were in the parking lot And Roy apologized for I can't remember what it is at the moment , but call back to the beginning of their relationship .

Speaker 2

Right And not a whole lot . She says sometimes someday I'm going to terrify you . He says what are you thinking about ? I asked him I'm thinking about , what are you thinking about ? I said stuff I didn't get glancing over it . We'll have to deep dive and think about that a little bit more .

But but she walks in past him , greets some people and leaves him standing there , which I thought was interesting , visually real , real wide shot , which is similar to Ted in the airport where you get that really sort of sense that he's alone in a thing , but he was not destroyed the way Ted was , but he still was alone And and the shot choice made you made

you feel that Now we cut to Ted in his office and coach . Really quickly blast us through the little beats of this scene , please .

Speaker 4

Well , on his phone he gets his message from Michelle . Henry's counting has a little countdown so they can show him , sort of ripping off the pages , how many days until dad gets home . Beard has had his passport shredded by Jane because she wants to make sure he cannot leave the country .

Luckily he has triple citizenship , which I thought was hysterical , including the Vatican , which for an atheist that's got to be a great story .

Speaker 2

Coach , one thing I just thought of . it just hit me right now . Sorry to jump in The way that his passport was shredded was the same way that one of the journalists who was covering the Zava arrival had shredded his notebook . Remember that ? Yeah , just as we were saying this .

I just remember it was like very uniform , yeah , anyway , i don't know if that's just Yeah , good call .

Speaker 4

Anyway who knows . So yeah , trent has a early version of his book , sort of bound , like it was from a coffee shop . This is just got to the end . We're working on it now . He hands copies to Ted and to Beard . Roy comes in and from his office just yells fuck . He asks how do you know if a girl likes you ?

He gets offered for a diamond dog's meeting , turns it down pretty flat , and then we have Beard start reading Trent's book and immediately giving a vocal note , including derivative , overly prosaic , i can't imagine . He's out of the first paragraph .

Speaker 2

I think he was on the first page .

Speaker 4

I was like , oh my god , So yeah . then Trent says , yeah , I think I'll step out , which I thought was a very funny . To be a writer , I'm not sure that non-writers could fully appreciate this moment .

I have taught myself just to not be anywhere nearby when people are reading something I've written , because every exhale , every sniff , anything they shift in the chair . You're looking for any signs of whether it's brilliant or the worst thing ever written . So I thought Trent getting out of there made a lot of sense . That was pretty funny .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that was very inside baseball Writer joke , but it is 100% accurate . All three of us on this show are writers and we all care about the written word , And so we know what Trent is going through . And again I stress how thrilled I am that the one writer on the show was not portrayed to be a muckracker or a troublemaker or a subvertive dick .

He was just like a guy doing the best he can . Instead of once upon a time looking for the negative in everyone , Trent , like everyone else , has gone through a metamorphosis into a better version of himself . We are now cut up to the off . I will say also , it's important that Roy was like no , no , no , no , like fuck the diamond dogs , No .

And Beard has the little thing where he's like oh , so close , We almost felt like we almost had him there . We go up to Rebecca's office with Higgins and Keely . They're asking her about comments about Rupert . And man , we nailed this on one of our deep dives where we said , once she gets past , how can she get past him ?

And we talked about how , if she was able to really choose to not be with him , as opposed to the way it ended , it would empower her and give her more agency . And man , she is so past it , it's crazy . She's just like I don't give a shit . It was amazing , just like we said .

You hear that old trope the opposite of love is not hate , it's indifference . She is just like whatever man And like I got . And we see this later with her when she greets Rupert before the West Ham game . We'll get into that very , very quickly . She asks oh no , no , this is Higgins suggesting .

So anyway , she doesn't give a quote to Keely or Higgins , healy or Kiggins . And so Higgins brings up the doing his job , stunning at a boy , higgie baby . He says Hey , listen , now's the time . Now's the time , sister , you can sell off 49% of the team . You can make a little change . And Rebecca says what to that boss ?

Speaker 3

How much could she get if she sold the entire team ?

Speaker 2

Yes , that surprised me . I was like Oh , yikes , okay , meanwhile , ted Beckett truth , there's everywhere like Oh , if Ted's leaving , she's leaving with them . There I saw her in that Kansas dress . I saw those sunflowers behind her . Right , i mean they've really .

Ted and Rebecca's Relationship and Platonic

I have a lot of love for the people who really wanted to see Ted and Rebecca together . You beautiful , beautiful , hopeless , romantic , hopeful romantic . I get where you're coming from , because I tend to be the same kind of person . I didn't see it on this series the way you did , but I can at least recognize that you were fucked with . Oh yeah .

Speaker 4

Oh yeah , oh yeah To the Lord .

Speaker 3

Yeah Listen , i'm unfortunately as far from a Ted Beckett shipper as you can get in that it actively would have ruined the show for me . But I can recognize when somebody else is getting their heart played with , and that definitely did happen . So I apologies for that , even if I don't understand why you wanted to smash their faces together .

Speaker 4

I think and I was , I actually surprised myself . I prepared myself that if they do this , I trust them to do it in a way that will work for me and that will have me accept it .

I ultimately , I think my gut was a lot closer to where boss is than I had let myself admit And I'll just , without going all the way into , just say I have some of as one friendship in particular , I have a woman I've been friends with literally for 40 years And we could not be any closer other than Daphne and my sister , like nobody in the world , I

think , knows me quite as well , Like she knows every story , every girl I liked when I was 13 . And yeah , I think there's . We've talked a couple of times about not valuing male , female friendship in the shipping process And I thought this was a good place to honor that .

Speaker 2

Yeah , for sure . And there's a little moment I don't know if anyone else shared this with me I really hate this dynamic and modern streaming . So Apple started by showing us a bunch of upcoming shows . They're like Hey , look what else we got .

Like I know we fucked up and we killed the most beautiful thing in the world , but here's a bevy of possible choices for you to and when the show finally ends , it minimizes automatically And then it starts counting down to show you , platonic , the new show that they're pumping . And I clicked out of that with such hatred in my heart get the fuck up .

I was like I am not , like I am still in full emotional breakdown And you're going to try to paint me a show . I'm like get that shit . I'm like I want to hear the music till the end . I want this to go black , like my soul right now and feel the loss and absorb the whole thing . I don't want to watch . You sell me something , are you out ?

You're damn right . I'm like what ? That is crazy . But I did say yeah , go ahead . go ahead , boss . Yeah .

Speaker 3

But platonic is awesome . You should actually check that out . No , no , no , no , no . Oh my god Yeah .

Speaker 2

Rose Byrne can do no wrong in my eyes . I , I , oh my god , she is fantastic . Seth Rogen has done so many things I really , really like and I like him . So , yeah , yeah , no , no , no , I'm not against the show and I don't want it to seem that way , but I don't want it when I'm still being emotional .

I want to let's compartmentalize these a little bit and try not to cross the streams .

Anyway , yeah , it was important And I think ultimately people will look back at the Ted and Rebecca relationship as a really really strikingly beautiful example of a male female relationship that didn't even remotely need any sexuality to it , because it was so pure and honest and kind and giving and loving in every possible way .

And let's not forget , we have friends out there , the world across , and some of our listeners who have written in to tell us on this podcast listen , I'm asexual and I don't view the world in those terms . Yeah , I'm glad that all you monkeys want to jump into bed with each other all the time .

It's not my jam , So you know , i think it might have done a disservice in the long run . But anyway , we see this moment here where Rebecca is possibly Higgins values the team at spit ballon . $2 billion to which Rebecca , we get a little spit up of her tea and and the third , fuck me .

Speaker 4

Oh right , biscuits , yes , tea , $2 billion Full on spit , take Fuck me Wow , that's good .

Speaker 2

Yeah , right , i missed that . I somehow missed it . That's right . Fuck me . Wow , wow

Last Practice and Musical Tribute

, damn . Okay , love it , jesus , all right , yeah , she's rich , she's rich rich .

Speaker 4

I mean rich , rich , Damn . Like where she says I have that much on me that if you had $2 billion , that could be a million dollars . Like that could work . You know she , she walked , she'd be walking around with the on a percentage basis with about what I'd be walking around with . I read $2 billion , Like wrap your mind around what that's a little rich .

Speaker 2

Rich James moment from Schpell's show . It's like right , oh man , good Lord , all right .

Speaker 3

So , although I will , point out , rebecca , still morally indefensible to be a billionaire . Regardless more , god damn it .

Speaker 2

This is not the time , boss , jesus .

Speaker 3

Christ . The revolution is always the time .

Speaker 2

All right , all right . No , that's that's a fair point . You can't take your eye off the prize . I understand that . So now we get our last practice . And who boy ? I desperately want to throw this to boss so badly She's shaking her head . I just want to torture her by having her walk us through this , but I'm not .

I'm going to send it over to coach and coach Tell us Yeah , boss is thanking me and nodding . Yes , it's the right choice , take it away , coach .

Speaker 3

I like that you get to keep all of your limbs , that's no need to call the blood guy yet .

Speaker 4

So so we're in practice or training , and Ted tells Roy , it's time . You can see that hesitation . Yeah , i have a ton of deep dive stuff about last practices that we'll get to , but this , this , this moment , definitely punched me in the gut . I know that moment where you're like , but if we say it's over , then it'll actually be over . Yes , Yes , yes .

So you get that feeling . Then we get whistle , whistle , which you know , great , great to have that curtain call for that element . And as we think we're wrapping things up , actually we've put together a sound of mute . the team has put together a sound of music .

musical number will almost lifts a boombox he's having a little trouble with the weight of the boombox , which made me laugh And we full on sound of music . So long , farewell , alveda Zane . Good night .

And if you would know that this scene would hit me in a particular way , because I've once played Kurt in the sound of music And , it's true , in middle school , i was Kurt Von Trap , i was Fah . Oh nice And so , yes , i was laughing as this came up , like could they figure out one more way to pull me into this show ? Like what the hell ?

But yeah , so they do this great bit . We can describe it in much more detail later .

But we end with , and , as people are saying good night , they walk by the coaches almost each time , or maybe each time somebody touches Ted , which I thought was like a nice touch them not all doing it , but somebody did it And then we end the musical number with essentially the team facing Ted , with the crowd that now we're training .

We have , you know , our own crowd And they say they sing the last piece of good night And we have a beat . Both are obviously very much moved . Beard , i believe , wipes a tear And Ted says thank you , fellas , that was perfect . At which point they make the post by by by celebration look like a funeral .

They go absolutely berserk , everyone , the crowd going , and once Trent Creme waved his had his blazer off and was waving it over his head like a helicopter , pd Pablo style . I applauded , i did in my house , i put my hands together and was like I am so here for this .

Yes , so yeah , i really , i really leaned all the way into that , listen there's precedent for this .

Speaker 2

Folks Like , like coach said , by by by they sang . Hey Jude , they sang three little birds . They say this is a show where people sing And I know it's not the favorite part for some people because they can't imagine human beings spontaneously breaking out into song .

Boss is giving me stink eye right now , but they do , boss , in places where people find happiness , find happiness and joy and community There are .

Speaker 3

there are churches every Sunday when people sing together just no , no , no , no , no , no , no . Sorry , we're not going to deep dive this yet , but outside of a church which , by the way , is an organized religion , meaning that organization is inherent to it .

You tell me one instance outside of a church or a theater , where a group of people sporadically get together to do this because we tried it as a society for a little bit And those were called flash mobs And they suck . Other than the very first one that God damn it , dj , whose name I'm forgetting about right now . Praise you .

I got to celebrate you , baby .

Speaker 4

Damn it , i'll post the video .

Speaker 3

I'm going to tweet the video , but that's the first flash mob and the best , and it's the only one that matters . And the rest of the time is I already ?

Speaker 4

talked about This does not happen Yes yes , yes , yes , thank you So here's the one thing I'll say , and I'm obviously not here to explain white culture to y'all . Wow , but I would listen to that podcast . I dare you to go anywhere and play sweet Caroline and not watch white people lose their shit Like I think you got to put an asterisk on this .

Speaker 2

I feel like yes , no , i absolutely .

Speaker 3

God damn , no for sure , especially at fucking R&Rs in Champaign Urbana in 2001 , when we all realized that it could go sweet Caroline , and then the entire bar shouted that fine , that's like , but that is a thing that all society does Like .

Speaker 2

I don't understand why they keep telling me That's something all society does . It's like Moni , moni if you're with you know , you don't know that when you yell during Moni , it doesn't matter , i know I know , you don't know .

Speaker 4

No , no , I'm having fun with it . The people breaking in the sun . I do think this is different than Three Little Birds on the bus . jokes aside , because I think that really is like out of nowhere , they decided to do a thing for Ted here , So I do think that's a . I do think we can hate both . I don't want to disappoint you .

Speaker 2

We can hate both , But I think there are two different things to hate , boss .

I just want to say I want to say I was , i was playing for , for playing soccer with a team from the United States at a , at a , the closing ceremonies of the Gothia Cup in Sweden , and there were 30,000 people there , teams , players , coaches in the stands , and they played Whitney Houston , greatest love of all and everybody spontaneously held hands from all ,

the , all the teams , all the players , everybody grabbed

Musicals and Goodbyes in Ted Lasso

it . I was in , i was in there , and we all sang along . I'm just telling you , i've seen it , so it's , it's , is it ? it did it . The key element , though , is did it capture what you were hoping it would capture , and I think the answer is not in this case .

Speaker 3

Oh , definitely not . I hate the singing . I hate all of the singing . The only singing that has been okay on this show as far as I'm concerned was at the karaoke bar when we got part of beer doing bad romance and then Rebecca doing let it go . And other than that I have hated every time anybody has sung on this show . I've never enjoyed it once .

Speaker 4

Do you generally hate musicals ? and for some people musicals you'll care . So yeah , got it . Wait , you hate musicals .

Speaker 3

I hate . Yeah , I got puppies . Yeah , I think a puppy Where ?

Speaker 2

do you weigh in on bad ?

Speaker 3

stuff . Where do you weigh in on rainbows and and smile Like , how are you smiling at ?

Speaker 2

you out of curiosity .

Speaker 3

Are you kidding me with this ?

Speaker 1

I want to know what it is about musical theater that you think is as good as no , you can't , it's unable to .

Speaker 3

You . I need to know what you think about . A musical is the same as a puppy , because this is going to be very important for our other conversations about where the show went . I think musicals are intentionally trope garbage . They prey upon your least good characteristics to make you feel something . I think that they are absolutely trash .

Speaker 2

This is . This is the worst generalization I've ever heard , but it's okay . Listen .

Speaker 4

This is why we love many musicals , so I think this is great , but I love that . That's how you , as many of our conversations , go this way , where I'm like I disagree with you , but god damn , i enjoy this And I am enjoying this .

Speaker 3

It's just the pure rage coming out of me . And I should say I am familiar with a number of musicals because somehow I have musical theater people in my family and I could fucking sing rent to you right now , but I won't , because I already sang Fat Boy Slim . I am familiar with them and I reject them .

This is not a case of me being unaware of what they have to offer . It is me disliking it .

Speaker 1

Well , anyway , moving on to the next scene in our podcast .

Speaker 2

Thank you , boss , we're gonna sing . We're gonna sing the rest of this . We're gonna try to . We're gonna try to tap into the singing trope that boss , boss alluded to and really manipulate our audience . Listen , it's fine . We can get into that more . Maybe we'll do a whole episode on bad takes and you can host .

What we'll do is get back to the team freaking out , which I loved when Ted said thank you , fellas , that was perfect . When he said perfect , that's as good as you . You know they've been practicing . You know everybody's been in on it . You know that they've been like , when the music started up , beards , like what the fuck is going on , what is you know ?

like we just want this practice to be whatever it is , and , and and you know that'll be it , and this is a this was a fitting gesture . The team clearly thought what does the situation need ? And what it needs is a musical number , because Ted and Beard are both huge fans of musicals , unlike some of the key members of this podcast .

And then now , okay , i feel I haven't . I haven't heard this yet , but I feel like I will eventually hear Keely got short shrift in this episode . I , i haven't heard that yet , i haven't seen it yet , but I feel like there may be an element in the future where it'll say like we didn't get enough Keely , didn't get enough resolution with Keely .

I know people are already complaining about Keely's relationship status , but we'll get to that really quickly . I will say that what people may have missed was in the production meeting and in the planning of this episode . They said we are going to feature Keely in the beginning of a , the I think the longest tracking shot that they've done on this show .

It was two minutes and 20 seconds long , and if it blink and you miss it because you may have just been like recovering from the singing and not recognizing , they didn't cut . There's no edit . There is Keely walking down hiding to Trenton Nate presence for coaches . This is all rolling . One shot a study cam following her going off of .

You know she does the thing everybody decent . A complete throwback to her very first entry . I mean that is that is powerful stuff . But but instead of just being like the person who makes waxing appointments for Jamie , she is now being like okay , boys , here's what you have to do . She's like she's in charge , She's a boss And that is a .

That is a powerful reminder how far she's come . We have Jamie do like a little axe body spray thing . She goes out the back door . He comes , he pivots out the front door , catches her . She's going out the the exit doors there , talks about Brazil Nike wants to pay him to go to Brazil and he held out to have his publicist with him .

And she first jokes and says no and then says yes . Meanwhile , while this is happening , we're behind them framing Roy Kent walking towards them .

Keely leaves , jamie leaves , we stay on Roy , then we follow Roy And when you watch this shot again , if you didn't notice that you're going to be impressed , you'll be like God damn , that is no joke to pull off that type of filmmaking . Roy walks in , offers to have a beer with Jamie , who's like well , i thought I couldn't have beer .

No , no , you're with me . It's an exclusion . It makes it up as it goes along And cool , sweet , to which Nate rolls up and says well , you guys are friends now . And yeah , jamie says , yeah , we're , we're friends . And then that is two . From the third . I attracted two minutes and 20 seconds And I did the math , folks , to get me to do math .

It's a big deal .

Speaker 3

I'm sorry , correction you did maths .

Speaker 2

Yes , i did Right , I did the maths . What was the joke after that ? I did the maths , and then he says another plural thing And Roy shakes his head no , i did the maths , yeah he got off board I forget what the secret was .

Speaker 3

Oh , i thought it was that he said the maths and I thought he used a singular verb , but I'll need to double check , like I thought he screwed up .

Speaker 4

Oh , I see That might be Yeah .

Speaker 2

Well , too bad , too bad . We don't know the show as well as we purport we do . Now we cut over to the pub and boss walk us through this little interaction between Rebecca and her mum , deborah . We're getting a lot of little sort of feature at very , very quick sort of hit goodbye scenes for key players , and we knew we were going to get it .

We talked about it . Heading into this , we knew this was going to be the case and tell us about Rebecca and Deborah .

Speaker 3

There are a few different things that happen . One thing that Deborah says is that when your father died , i was terrified of being alone , and so sort of congratulations to Rebecca on doing so well on her own and everything else with the team . Rebecca really is exceptional . Also , she mentions that Ted isn't dying .

He's just moving back to America , which I thought was funny , because I don't know near that farm might as well . I'm sure that these two will be in each other's lives for a while , but it does feel like a death when he is moving that far away .

There's also a follow-up with Tish where Rebecca says she's so fraught and is praying upon people for their money And Deborah says she said that you would say that , and this is something we're going to need to deep dive a lot , because everything that Tish said to Rebecca comes true , which means number one .

I stand by my point that I don't understand why we're following a team of footballers when there is a literal , actual psychic in town . Why isn't the show about her ? How are we not getting more information on Tish ? Why is she not in this episode ? It's fine , we can figure that out .

And the scene ends with Paul Bas and Jeremy paying the bill and having a little talk about how Rebecca is like the mom they never had , which is a lot of things to pack into one goodbye scene , yeah no , it was The thing we said .

Speaker 2

this is a Gen X show and I thought it was such an interesting thing that two boomers say , oh , she says I wish I peace of mind for my daughter and her whole generation . And they say , oh , mesa's are haunted by how fucking easy they've had it . I was like , oh , fuck you May What .

Speaker 4

But what I loved is they lost it . I was like , whoa , they are real . That is a genuine laugh . They've both been dying to say that for about 10 years And it just was like , yes , I enjoyed it on their behalf . But yeah , it was an interesting shot to take .

Speaker 2

Yeah , i cannot wait to deep dive

Ted Lasso's Male Bonding

this . I was just talking to my kids the other day . I'm doing a ton of renovation . If you go on my Twitter thing you can see I'm posting some of the stuff I'm doing . I'm trying to get my house ready for my daughter's graduation and I can't afford to pay people , so I have to do it all myself .

Luckily , i have the know how to do it , but I'm trying to train my kids to do it with me And they're just like they can't , they can't And I'm like God . I wonder if it is true that each generation just gets softer and softer , and maybe that's the way what they're alluding to here with Deborah and May . I don't know , but I was like , yeah , i remember .

Yeah , whatever , we can talk about how you could have one income and raising a family of six on one income back in the day , but anyway , boss , what are we going to say ?

Speaker 3

Oh , only that , every generation , it's the whole . like when I was your age , i walked 10 miles to school in the snow , uphill backwards , and some other . Now , i have to admit , i'm seeing a lot of Gen Xers , especially on Twitter , talking about how this is why you can't hurt us . And it's all this playground equipment that fucking .

I played on Like this weird habit of generations to be like we're so much tougher than the generation that we are raising and responsible for their level of toughness . We are going to brag about our own toughness while also guaranteeing that our children have it easier than we do , but we're somehow still tough . Every generation does it . It's bullshit .

Every fucking time It like different things change . Nothing is objectively easier or harder , it's just the shit you deal with .

Speaker 2

Yeah , i mean , i think this is , this is the thing . Oh God , we can't deep dive this , but there are . There are moments where we say you know , like , i remember telling them , it's how you , how you portray it Like .

So , instead of me saying to my kids , like , what the fuck guys Like , like , can you get to work , like , i'm like , ok , i'm trying to be curious about it , i'm trying to say like , and then they're curious back . So I was telling them a story one time and I said you know , i was a little kid , it was about your age .

We're going to the thing and we had to swerve around something on the road And of course , you know , all four of us are crammed into the right side of the backseat . And because the swerve , and my kids like wait , what about your car seats ? I'm like no , we didn't know car seats , you just had a big bench seat .

Whatever you take a turn , everybody would just they're like , what ? Like ? so it's crazy . But they're also not being judgmental , because I'm not trying to make them feel lesser than and then you know , concurrently they're , they're more curious than they are judgmental about it . But anyway , now we get , we cut to one moment .

I really think it's important , this beautiful scene with Paul Baz and Jeremy paying the bill for Rebecca . I thought it was very powerful , a very , very powerful statement and beautiful And , i think , influence something that happens later in the show .

Speaker 4

If I had to guess , I , yes , i will get to . I thought it was particularly beautiful because we've had a lot of fun with these three And we've established very well that they are not rolling in dough , but also , like , when do they go ? nuts is whenever there's free beer , right . Like Rupert bought the bar , rebecca bought the bar , like everybody's .

Like oh , yeah , yeah , yeah . And for those three who to choose to say no , no , no , we are going to pay the , the lunch tab for a literal billionaire to express our gratitude .

Yeah , that I'll touch where I want to go at the deep dive , but I think gratitude is a way to show love And I think that that was the height of their showing gratitude , gratitude .

Speaker 2

Number four Red coach . No , no , that ain't number four .

Speaker 4

That's good .

Speaker 2

But that ain't number four .

Speaker 4

Four on three .

Speaker 2

So we're going to . We're going to zip right past Ted reading Trent's book . There's a trenches basically hovering , but it's not a huge scene . Loud nose , breath , all human beings are opposed to the Laugh Police And we zip along . Roy and Jamie at a bar drink Darsh diners . This is an example of some non-toxic male bonding , i would .

I would say again , one of my many , many , many sort of bull Durham moments . In bull Durham , this crash and nuke , who are both after the Susan Surrounded character played by any Savoy , and that's always interesting to have characters . If you love all three characters , a love triangle is interesting If if you love all three characters , which we do anyway .

This is an example of these guys working out their problems , at least initially , through through talking , and I was like really sort of charmed by Jamie saying no to Roy . There's like if it's not official , then no , and I was like laughing . I'm like , oh , this is such a .

This is growth for both , for both of Roy was addressing it And I don't want to see you get hurt . I really do believe he means that on some level , but also trying to protect his , his sort of stake is claimed to Keely But Jamie is felt empowered to be like no , it's not official .

Speaker 4

Then I , i like , i like this in a number of ways And by liked , this was definitely , this was definitely a yell at the screen piece . And so , as , as it turned , as you could feel the energy turn and you could feel everybody's testosterone level right start rising , i was like no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no .

Oh boy , the police on it from home . It was like it was . You know what it felt like . It felt like the moment in season one where Roy and Jamie have already been going at it on the field And we go into the locker room he says call me old one more time .

Like it had that level of because I've been there and it's not the best of manhood , frankly , but where it's like , this really actually is not a thing to fight over , but I can't be the one to back down to . Either you're going to back down or there's going to be a fight here . And it really doesn't matter .

Once you reach to , like what I saw there was , once you reach that point , it doesn't matter whether you're arguing over a penny or a billion dollars or who gets to be with Keely , like , if you don't back down , there's going to be a fight . I'm there now And I watched two .

You know , fundamentally alpha dogs decide that this was that moment , and I just kept praying . Yes , one of them would Ted Lasso out , but Well , listen , coach .

Speaker 2

we retracted this show because of the way it gave examples To men in this era of other ways to behave and how to be masculine without it being toxic , and all sorts of things . We've gone over it a million times .

The insults that they default to when it starts to get hot are verbatim insults from season one , where he calls them a child and then it's called some Harry . He says you're a fucking child . Like you can't , you're not destined to be a keely , you're a fucking child . Right .

Speaker 3

And that's what he called him when he was , when he knocked the vanilla vodka .

Speaker 2

It's a child Right . And then the other one was like a Harry old print . call me Harry One more time . You know like that also . So we're starting at these moments and then we see a Roy Kent .

Speaker 3

They were vert .

Speaker 2

Jamie says , hey , that the video is for me . Roy Kent gives him a look where we haven't seen . That look from Roy Kent . That's old school .

You're in real trouble , roy Kent , and we see him flexing his hand as we cut away like making a fist And I was like , oh God , these Dummy as far as we've come , But I think that's real , though right , Like I mean , I'm not .

Speaker 4

You know , like I said , I've been in situations and not all of them were 30 years ago where I was like I promise you , if you stand up , we're going to move some furniture , Like I'm not fucking .

Speaker 2

I did not have that gene , unless I get hit on the head when I'm not expecting it , but I think it's really funny . Coach . we kind of I always think like yeah , in those moments I'm like there's no us . I don't want there to be an us Once we start fighting . then there's officially an us .

We have had , we have shared something , even though it's an all this . No , I don't like you . I don't want you anywhere near me . I don't want you stink on me . Anyway , that's probably not a good thing either . So we move . We move over to Ted

Ted Lasso's Apologies and Moments

and Rebecca . Very important scene in the blue stadium seats . Boss , can you walk us through this this quickly ?

Speaker 3

Well , ted is sitting in the middle of the stands . Rebecca comes over and sits with him , much like Beard and Ted did in the first season when they were watching Jamie and Danny have the shootout on the field . She is essentially begging him not to go And she says I know that you need to go home to Henry , but maybe home could be here .

You could bring Henry here . He could go to the best schools . Michelle could come here and teach and leave . As a department head , i can sell half of the team and give you an insanely high salary , which you still will have deserved more . She really trying anything she can to get him to stay because of how important she thinks that he is to the team .

He still says no . He still says he has to go back to Kansas .

Speaker 4

In tribute to male-female friendship . she didn't even ask Sam to stay . It's true , yeah , and I thought that was profound . She's literally like how do I go on without you ? I think if at that moment you'd been like no , no , no , you're not going to sell 49% , you're going to give me 49% .

Speaker 3

you're like all right , okay , yeah , no . I think that's a recognition of what he's done for the team , the town , for her and how important he has become to her . All of those things are sort of encompassed in that . But he still says no , he still has to . It needs to be over .

Speaker 2

He does not actually , though , say no .

Speaker 3

Well , sorry , i shouldn't say no . Yeah , he doesn't say it .

Speaker 2

I really loved . He doesn't say anything Like . He barely says anything .

And I cannot wait on the deep dive to talk about the choice of Ted's sort of reserve in this episode and how he is not Flandersie at all And even when he says Flandersie stuff , because he is completely full of pathos and full of resolve , based on what he knows the decision has to be about his son but who is going to be left behind as a result of that

decision and how that's going to affect him . He's mindful of all this And I think he really carries it well . His physicality really speaks to that . But he doesn't say like no , no , no or anything , nothing like that . He just .

The only time he says anything is when she realized you know she's like , yeah , it sounds like you're already made up your mind And she says maybe I'll travel , i should go abroad , and he says sort of like an Eat , pray , love kind of thing Like , but he's not Flandersie , he'd be like there's none of that , it's just a thing that he throws out .

And what does she say in response to that ? boss ?

Speaker 3

More like a drink sleep fuck .

Speaker 4

How'd you feel about that , boss ? I really , because I thought of you on that one . I was like come on , boss , we got friends , we got some good friendship profanity there that they both enjoyed . Come on , are you with us ? Oh no , oh no , oh wow .

Speaker 3

It was good . It was good , it was good . I'm not saying it wasn't good It was just . I mean , we will get into this later , but there is something about the musical that broke me a little bit And at that point what I knew is this show , as much as I might love , it , is not designed for me . This is not a me show .

It's part of what I loved so much about the first season was that it's not supposed to be a me show , and I still was drawn in . But , as it moved more into what it became . what it became was not for me , and that's fine . There's still so much for me to enjoy about it , but at this point I was like my friend who we're separating at this point .

bless you and good luck .

Speaker 4

I love that . You just said that and I will argue and more strenuously later , that that is actually quite a bit of the lasso way , the way you just framed that .

Speaker 3

That is also some PTSD from Sherlock and Game of Thrones , where I fought so hard to keep it as mine that at this point I'm just like listen then , you do you . I'm going to do me . We'll figure it out , That'll be fine . I can no longer be as literally emotionally invested in a show that lets me down . I cut it off too early from your own out .

But , yes , no , i think that you're not wrong , that that is partially the lasso way .

Speaker 4

If you love a show , let it go . If they keep doing musical scenes , it was never yours . I think that's not how it goes .

Speaker 3

Something like that . That's basically it . Something like that .

Speaker 2

Got it . We cut over to Keeley's house . There's a knock on the door . The nitwits have been in a fight . That's the callback to the coffee scene , where Keeley expertly pours the two coffees into one She's wearing a shirt that says , obey , he has frozen peas on his head .

Speaker 4

I believe . Oh right , yes , yes , because of Moshi peas , remember .

Speaker 3

Yes , moshi peas , excellent call .

Speaker 2

That's a good coach . They say Bob's your uncle , you get to choose And to which point she shit cans them out of the thing And they both have the door closed behind them and says we're fucking idiots .

Speaker 4

This was definitely a talk to the screen moment , because I was like you can still turn back , guys . One of you can realize what a bad fucking idea this is , and you can still turn back . And they just did not .

And Daphne for those of you who haven't been with us is my wife And Daphne , immediately as they started talking , went this is disqualifying , this is disqualifying . She just kept saying this is disqualifying And I was like , oh god , no , no , no , no , no , no .

Daphne gets Keeley in a way that I don't , and certainly you two idiots don't , and please stop saying words . But yeah , they didn't And they got put out .

Speaker 2

God , damn That is . Daphne terrifies me for what it's worth . What is the line she says about me , coach ?

Speaker 4

Oh , castleton is one baby making fool , that's right , that's right .

Speaker 2

I live in eternal fear of your wife , The greatest person on the planet . But yeah , she's whew man , You , You're going to have to start a support group coach .

Speaker 4

Right right .

Speaker 2

So yeah , they , they are out on the street . Now we have Ted is leaving late night in the Richmond offices and locker room area . He walks by the door and he sees what coach .

Speaker 4

He sees Nate looking up over the office door where the believe sign once was . He comes in . They stand next to each other . I felt it was framed in a way that was similar to the elevator shot . It almost felt like they picked up the conversation where Rupert interrupted it .

It almost felt like to me And I have what I thought was a pretty powerful moment and an apology where Nate starts to say Ted , you know , and Ted says I know , and Nate says let me say it , and I think they're all always growing . That's one of the things I did like about the show . I felt that they were always growing and Ted needed Ted .

You can accept an actual apology . You don't have to short circuit it . You don't have to talk about how much . You don't have to have it . You don't talk about like let the guy away . Another way to say I love you or to display love is to genuinely apologize And I would say also to genuinely forgive .

Speaker 2

And also to let someone apologize because they need it too . You can't control that for them . This is a very control freak sort of thing . Like I will carry this water for you . But I don't want you to carry it . No , no , no . I need to say this Yeah .

Speaker 4

And it's part of growing up right . I mean , part of this is like I want , let me be a man , let me be a man , dad , like I want to say it . And so he barely gets through any of it and he just says I'm sorry and just falls into a hug . This scene definitely hit me pretty hard . We're a long way from you know , love your hot dogs .

We've been through a lot . And as they look up there , ted says that he still sees it up there And I guess that was one way of talking about what I meant about the show for me is that I think , once you have this kind of a profound experience , i think we can .

Oh , i saw it up there , you know , even as a viewer , and I thought that was really cool . Like that locker room just will never be the same . That's it .

Like whoever you know , whatever comes next , whatever This was a moment between all of them the believe sign , the hanging it crooked , the slapping it at you know halftime , all of that And that sign will always be there on some level .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and I was happy to see it because we don't want to get too far into this . But in seeing it back in the facility I thought , oh crap , like this is an off . So I'll give you just a really off the top of my head things . they decided to keep offscreen moments that we didn't see . We didn't see Roy and Keely breaking up .

We didn't see Ted telling Rebecca he was retrying like I'm going home or whatever . That was a choice to do it off scene . We didn't see Ted telling the team he was leaving . We didn't say Ted telling Beard he was leaving .

We didn't see the moment where we heard about where the team Will must have told the team about Nate and the team decided to talk about it and vote on it , and we didn't see that .

I'm sure there's other ones I'm forgetting , but not having those moments and in choosing to , let's say , feature things like Jack or KJPR elements or things that I think ended up having less weight , that part was disappointing , and so I was happy to see that we at least got this beat where we saw the moment between Ted and Nate And Nick Muhammad .

Again , let's not conflate him with the performance like the Nate character and Nick Muhammad's performance , which was again . Some people can cry and make it look believable . I'm like he is really crying . What is he ? He is just destroyed .

Speaker 4

Yeah , i don't know who you're talking to , but he drew on something . Maybe just the show is ending and this has been an amazing experience , but he definitely drew on . This was not like , oh , i perfected this my 30 of conservatory crying .

Speaker 2

There was some real humanity , oh yeah , yeah , i don't know if he's a method or what , but it was crazy .

And another thing for people that know , who have been listening , who have been following this podcast you know that I've been very critical of the whole Nate arc But there's moments where , again , i would say it just ended up being the moments were in the wrong place . I really needed them a little bit earlier .

There were some beautiful moments And keep in mind the I'm sorry I'm so sorry is what ended up being distilled from a 60 page document that Nate had written out . So , anyway , we'll get into that in the deep dive . Coach , what are you going to say ?

Speaker 4

I actually I mean , you know , probably this is the Nate redemption arc was probably the one I banged on the most as much as I'm the representative for all things , ted Lasso But this part of me that went . You know what ? I don't get to tell you how to tell your story And I can make a . Really .

I really actually ultimately liked what they did And I thought that I got my very real apology . I felt like a lot of things So we'll get back to it . But I mean even coming back . He was the gaffer over at West Ham And he has come back as opposed to before . You guys ever want to be the boss .

He comes back over here as Will's assistant , like Will now tells him hey , nate , i want lavender on the towels , and he's like yes , sir , and he is fine with coming back . Like who he needs to be to be able to do that is not the Nate .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and certainly not the .

Speaker 4

Nate we've gotten .

Speaker 2

I know like that's in the ego with him . Yeah , total absence of the ego gone .

Speaker 4

And I thought that was yeah , I thought that was pretty cool And to see that before this apology , I think also because there's no , there's no worry that it's a move , There's no worry that , like , maybe if I show how sorry I am , I'll get named , you know gaffer Coach .

Speaker 2

Just glance at boss , Just look at the look at she's just look at that , i know .

Speaker 4

I know She's looked at us and she's like what are you to discuss ? What are you discussed After all the hours we complained ?

Speaker 2

about Nate . You're OK with it now ? Yeah , boss , i was happy to see him back , i know .

Speaker 4

That's why I'm owning it . But I did think like ultimately I was like they did it for me , they did it interestingly , it's not , it would not have been my instinct . But ultimately I did feel like , yeah , he voted 60 page apology . We saw the piece with beard .

I thought , you know , i mean , even if we do go to the Judeo Christian route , i mean Jesus never met me But theoretically he died from my sense . I mean , you know , centuries before I committed him , he was like God damn , don't go to our house , shit , that's it . It's in the Bible .

Speaker 3

Yeah , yeah , here comes .

Speaker 2

Coach Orlando Because a whole lot of trouble , God boss .

Speaker 3

So the first thing I'll say is that , as a person raised outside of the church , i saw somebody tweet that Jesus died on a Friday and was risen on a Sunday . Yes , so Jesus died for our sins , but maybe he just gave up his weekend for our sins if you think about it .

Speaker 4

I love that meme so much .

Speaker 3

Like I mean , if we're going to , I adore that .

Speaker 4

That is so goddamn funny .

Speaker 3

OK Yeah , if we're going to get really real . No , i appreciate it . Maybe he only gave us a few , that's really good .

Speaker 4

Jesus gave up his weekend for your sins . Thank you for adding .

Speaker 2

Thank you for adding blasphemy to the litany of terrible things we've done on this podcast . boss , I really appreciate that , Palis . I come with blasphemy .

Moving Toward Better

Speaker 3

The only thing that I'll say is that I know that I am more difficult to move emotionally than other people . There are literally like before , when you joked about how , how do you feel about puppies and rainbows , what I thought was I feel fine , they're fine . I guess , like , do I need to do ? I have to watch the puppy . Do I need to do anything with it ?

Because I don't want to do that . I'm not interested in that . So I know that this is a me thing , but I cannot have somebody show me something and me have any reaction to outside of like a beautiful painting or something . If they're like here's a scene of Ted and Nate hugging , i'd be like great . How did that happen ? What are the steps ?

How was I taken from one point to the other in order to get here ? And it wasn't effective for me . I'm not saying it shouldn't be . I'm not saying other people are wrong . I'm saying it didn't do it . Yeah .

Speaker 4

No , it doesn't land on me that way at all , but yeah , and it's why I'm copying to it , because I was definitely like no , no , no , fuck this , no , and ultimately I found myself saying dude order , 60 page apology . You know like I just , they got me , they got me . So yeah , no , i hear you , but anyway , a board on the blast for me . Let's move on .

Speaker 2

We have now Ted's office where he's complaining about the Champions League and the championship And that don't make no sense . Roy sums it up as money which for people like boss , who have been like there's no real , there's no connectivity to the real world and stuff .

I was laughing , i was like that's about as hardcore of just money Like oh yeah , that makes sense . OK , nate comes in to give a wish of people good luck and then gets caught up being old school Nate . No need for it to become a cautionary tale . I'm not trying to cast a spell .

We get a beat where Trent is about to excuse himself when he sees like oh , this is the old team together . Ted , in a rare lasso-ism , calls him Trent House Magazine .

Speaker 4

I savored that I was like aw I'm going to miss you .

Speaker 2

Then we have a Roy asking to be a diamond dog , which was shocking and they couldn't believe it . And once they realized he's serious , it was nice to see Nate hop back up of the file cabinet . This is just a lot of nostalgia here . They're really . It's nostalgia porn . It's what this is . This is just boss will over the .

I'm sure in the deep dive she will talk about the choice to be nice over stakes or things like that , but this is how they chose to wrap it up is give us these beats of really high energy niceness . Whether you believe it or not . It's a whole different conversation .

But Roy talks about how he busted his ass trying to change , but he's still me wanted to be someone better . Now we get a question and this is all for deep dive stuff . Can people change ? I don't think we change per se as much as we learn to expect , except who we have always been . I'm very sorry , in the show dock I used the wrong , except God .

I was really flying through this . I'm not prone to mistakes like that . I'm not to get 50 lashes after the show . But change isn't about trying to be perfect . We get from beard . Perfection is boring . They do a litany of things that are perfect , which I agree with most of them .

Human beings are never going to be perfect , roy , it's the best we can do is keep asking for help . So asking for help was a key element in improving , which I thought was interesting , and accepting it .

When you can get it , when you can , and if you can keep doing it , that you'll always be moving toward better , which is , we can spend a whole episode just deep diving that one moment .

Speaker 4

We get our . I like that . That came from Higgins , by the way . I've always thought he was the moral guiding voice , and even Zava said you're the glue , and I thought the fact that that specific thing about always be moving toward better came from Higgins , matter You ought to do glue .

Speaker 2

Yeah , i remember that . Yeah , higgins has had the shortest arc of anyone . He's always been a pretty good Yeah if anything .

Speaker 4

Yeah , he opened up , but yeah , he's still guiding us .

Speaker 2

Oh boss , What look is that boss ?

Speaker 3

No , You know how I feel about Higgins and his betrayal of Rebecca .

Speaker 2

You know how I feel about this .

Speaker 3

Oh , come on , Absolutely not . You don't think that he's way back .

Speaker 2

He's just like any other man , boss . He gets tired of the same old , same old . You stop that . I think that in Jesus Christ .

Speaker 3

I think in retrospect season one , his lack of a full apology to Rebecca for betraying her . He says at one point I'm sorry , rebecca , and that's it . I do believe that this was , in retrospect , a flaw of the first season . He should have made further amends to Rebecca for his betrayal .

Speaker 4

You know what ? OK , yes , at the time I didn't feel that way . as you describe it , that way , you're swaying me . And I would say for sure that I didn't hold him to the standard that I was holding Nate to in this season , like maybe also less , because I didn't know them as well at the time or where I was .

But regardless , i did not hold Higgins' apology and redemption to the same standard as I was holding for Nate .

Speaker 2

So yeah , i'm excited to actually deep dive that And I think you're right , boss , and I do think it is easy for us to forgive it and say , oh , it's really not a big deal .

And especially as men , we have to do a better job of looking at that privilege and that false equation where we say , oh well , we can make excuses for it , but it's like that's bullshit And he should be held accountable And I'm glad you brought it up .

Speaker 4

Do the rightest thing . Yeah , do the rightest thing . If that means you got to lose your job , do the rightest thing . No , i'm , yeah , all right , boss , you got me . You know , i try to get the massage in the out . We're going to put this . They're going to put me back through the wash . Put me back through the wash .

Speaker 3

Listen man . Sometimes It's constant improvement .

Speaker 4

Thank you , that's right , moving toward better To toward better .

Speaker 2

Thanks to boss . We appreciate it . Now we get this very , very quick thing with Rupert and George Kartrick , who is now the manager of West Ham , which coach called so well . He's like oh , this is a job interview . when he was sort of , yeah , just kissing up to Rupert on the show , He's got those short shorts .

There's obviously no connection between these two guys . Rupert's just like beat them .

Speaker 4

Quickly , just because we talk about the direction all the time , the shot when Kartrick is walking away after that exchange and I mean they go full Darth Vader and it's really a lot of fun , but they are about waist high with the camera as Kartrick walks away . And I called out . I was like , oh , the shorts .

And I thought they did a great job of making sure , like we were reminded , that Kartrick wears these unfortunately short shorts . So , just as a technical thing , i thought that was cool .

Speaker 2

Yeah , no , I agree . I agree That was really funny visually to see Bill Fellows plays George Kartrick . I think we've called him out before . He does an excellent job on the show .

Speaker 3

I mean just excellent , excellent job .

Speaker 2

It's tough to be . Sometimes we say it's fun to be like the guy who played Derek . It's fun . And Kartrick had to be a complete wiener the whole time . Such a case , such a every , every single choice he made was disgusting until this episode , and we'll get to that . But yeah , the short shorts were really a clever and funny visual choice .

Never leave a joke on the table . We see now Rupert is , walks into the room , is being his charming self . We know there's allegations Arlo's talking over top . We know there's allegations of he might lose the team But if he can pull out a win he might hold on longer .

So there's this whole thing where there are some stakes built into that And he walks in like he did for the auction , where this is , where all the beautiful like he's still charming , he's still lovely And holy shit . In comes Rebecca , who is completely Coach . What are you going to say ?

Speaker 4

Just quickly a complete reversal of what we've experienced with him . Constantly It's been her either entering a space or being in a space and dun dun dun Who's behind her saying something ? who's walking through the door behind her . It's always sort of like and now , no , no , no , now it's Sassy and Rebecca . Surprise , rupi , you didn't see us , did you Right ?

And I thought that was a great way to underscore the power shift .

Speaker 2

Yeah , Now he is the one who's static And Rebecca is the one who's in motion . She is absolutely over him says a very nice thing to him , which is hey , you're the luckiest man , whatever , In spite of everything that's happening , you're going to win .

One team you're going to love is going to win , And she means it And she's kind And she has no other reason to be . There's no venom in her Boss .

Speaker 4

I'm going to check in with you on this one . Did you think she meant it ? Because I kind of felt a little bit like she was , like I felt like that was . I thought that had a different culture but a bit of a bless your heart infused in it , did you , i wonder ?

Speaker 3

For starters , I need everyone to know that Castleton said bless your heart to me this morning .

Speaker 2

So I'm like yes , you sure did . I said bless your little heart . Actually .

Speaker 3

Well , i mean accurately being able to describe it doesn't take away from the truth involved .

Emotions and Nostalgia in Conversation

I think there was a little bit of I love the out of context .

Speaker 2

Why are you trying to submarine me on the podcast , boss ? That is so cold-blooded ? We were talking on the internal Slack about how midwestern people are they actually nice ? Are they not actually nice ? And then we're using different terms And I threw that in there . My God boss , wow , you are ruthless . Today . No musicals , castletons of misogynists . God .

Speaker 4

Bless your little heart . All right go .

Speaker 3

Oh , no , no , no , no , no , no , Higgins . No , sorry , I'm not going to go there . I was going to do a joke . I'm not going to do that joke . No , this I just wanted to bring up the what's that word ? I'm looking for the kismet of it that was mentioned earlier and in this conversation .

I think that this was a little bit kidding on the square , i think , as Al Franken used to talk about it , where there is a little bit of Deborah on her shoulder saying , if you don't let him bother you , he doesn't have any power , and her also having Ted on the other shoulder saying like no , this actually is a good thing for him , just like he's going

through a hard time . Let him have this . So I think it's somewhere in the middle .

Speaker 2

Interesting , Ted . I can't wait to watch that and see how it actually plays out . Then we have Sassy come up and she murders her friend .

Speaker 4

Was I the only one who saw Sassy and thought , oh my god , i can't wait till she starts speaking , because I was like Rebecca , love you two bits , but I need you to move on so that we can get what Sassy is about to say , because it's going to be gold .

Speaker 2

Do you remember ? Sassy said Rupert , i think about your death every single day .

Speaker 4

Oh , i can't wait To show up at your funeral . I'm going to wear red .

Speaker 3

Yeah , i'm going to wear red , and that is what your best friend does . You get to be above it so that he knows you don't care about him . And your best friend says if you hurt her , i will kill you and I know where to hide the body . That's what your best friend does .

Speaker 4

I have a question Why'd you break up with my friend ? I know that's a maligned character , but that was a friend move .

Speaker 2

That's what a friend does .

Speaker 3

Yep .

Speaker 2

So , yeah , she leaves Rupert for dead . I mean , she slaughtered it . So I wish you the best , because you are the fucking worst . Truly wish you the best . I enjoyed that Yeah . Then they show them , they leave him again . They leave him , he gets left . They go outside , take their seats . We get coach . What is it ? No , no , no .

He says move on , move on . He's just enjoying the whole destruction of Rupert . They ask Barbara who is there ? if it's Mrs Higgins , i believe , and again , i've only seen it twice . But she says , oh , do you like football ? She's not , i prefer rugby . It has blood , which is nice , has men throwing other men around And low-key Babs has just stolen the show .

I don't know how . Katie Nicks , man , i cannot wait to see what she's in next , because she killed it on this show . It is just , she is incredibly talented , my God , and they helped her with fantastic writing and just those little glimpses into her personal life where she likes the blood is the chef's kiss . In the locker room the guys are prepping .

They get a care package from Zava . They get shirts that say Danny's like he won't , let him hurt me again , don't open it . And right away , it's shirts . I'd like to , whatever , right away . Then we get . We see that it is , by the way , the biggest Zavocado . He's going to be very successful , but that is amazing . That is amazing . Then we get .

Let's see Danny and Zorro or Van Damme . At this point Danny approaches Van Damme , van Damme shy as a way What is I am ? I wrote I am here . What is that ? You guys know ? Did I forget that ?

Speaker 3

I think you were going for the line where Zava on his card says I am always inside you . That's it . Yes , I forgot to finish it . Yes , i am always inside you , that's it .

Speaker 2

That's it , that's exactly . Thank you , boss . See , where would I be without you to help me finish my thoughts ? Yeah , coaches .

Speaker 3

Probably a lot happier because you wouldn't have all these puppies and musicals in line .

Speaker 2

This is true Total teamwork here . We get the Zorro mask . Is Zorro ? now it goes by Zorro And I see Ted walk in and red sneakers and I get really emotional right away . The ruby red slippers are in full effect . We get the movie . Ted says I'm tapped out . It makes a Lord of the Dance reference . Michael Flatley , did you guys get that ? Were you both in ?

I did not .

Speaker 4

Like I said , Michael Flatley , I was like hold it .

Speaker 2

Do you remember , lord of the Dance , the Irish ?

Speaker 4

dance , i do .

Speaker 2

Yeah , i was like holy shit , what a pull . That was crazy . I'm telling you , wherever Sudeikis and Brandon Hunt and these knuckleheads were watching something , i was somewhere else watching the same shit , so so much of it landed for me The Coach Beard movie .

The Coach Beard movie sort of gets everybody emotional and it's just again another nostalgia play for the audience . We cut to the game , we see West Ham lined up and we dolly shot across the faces of our beautiful players and they're all crying .

Speaker 4

The game begins , oh go ahead , coach , yeah , and we can break it all the way apart later . But I think it's interesting that again , beard misses on how to get the correct emotional note out of a team , and that is that . That is a skill , like I will tell you as a coach . Like that is a skill My first speech is to teams .

When I was 21 and 22 were not the things of the things of lore , and that is a thing that you develop . So like that he misses again

Analysis of Ted Lasso Episode 9

. I thought was funny , but I thought it showed a lot about what we've learned over the course of this . Because they're crying and it may be that other people are laughing and thinking , but I wasn't laughing at them Like , not like that . It wasn't like , oh , they're men crying .

It was like , oh , in that situation , isn't that funny that the world would be like what the hell is going on ? But I was with them and understood exactly why they were crying And if I had been in that locker room I'd be dehydrated before the game .

Speaker 2

Yeah , no , it's a good point . It's a good point . I also want to say now we're starting to see the gameplay and we're cutting back and forth between . we saw the old couple arrive for the one Harry Met Sally episode . We saw Michael , the boyfriend of Colin , go up and get the Winona Judd tickets . We see , i was so happy to see my boy .

Speaker 4

Did that mean that was led by Ted ? Or does that mean that Ted told Colin what to do ? I don't know . We're going to have to keep that .

Speaker 3

I think it was that second one , but yeah , okay , yeah .

Speaker 4

I wasn't clear , i wasn't sure at this point .

Speaker 2

Yeah , we get John Wings night . I was so psyched for some more classic Wings night . You know how much I love him , pb and J . And we also got the setup for Michelle and Henry watching in Richmond Garb And meanwhile Dr Jacob mocking the sport saying , oh , can't wait for two hours on the zero , zero tie .

It's a very American position , very , very , very common . You wonder why soccer hasn't taken off in the United States is because of that exact mentality , and those of us who love the beautiful game would love to catapult people like Dr Jacob into the ocean . We're not allowed to legally .

Technically , we also get to see Dr Sharon and she is very curiously trying to figure this out . Look to me like she had a cowboys jersey on And I was like , oh , there's a star in the right color . And I was like , oh , how , that's one of the most toxic cultures in any sport .

Speaker 4

Anyway , very strange . I have to go back to that . I didn't . I didn't clock that , which , yeah , interesting . I'll go back for once for that , yeah .

Speaker 2

So during the gameplay we have , I thought do I get any credit , Do I get any love for ? for this right here , What I'm highlighting ? Did you guys know what the ? I'm assuming you had never heard this except for me talking about it on the podcast And you're both shaking your heads because you forgot that I talked about it in the podcast . This is the .

the tiki taka is the is the Spanish type of play where it's past , past , past , past past . It's all ball control offense .

Speaker 4

Oh , that's what Rupert says . Rupert said it was a tiki tiki , because that's another .

Speaker 2

That's equally sort of obnoxious in a certain sector of the football community , because they don't like that , because that's , you know , originated in , or it's prevalent in , the Spanish teams .

And what they'll do is they'll bring the ball all the way up and down the field and then they'll be like eight yards from the goal , the offensive goal , and they'll just turn around and kick it all the way back to their goal And you're like but not in one kick . It'll be a tiki , tiki , six kicks . And you're like why didn't you just ?

you're right there , like it makes people crazy . So anyway , they end up getting a . It's a zero , zero game in the beginning . They end up getting a . Danny Rojas bicycle misses the net . Dr Jacobs says well , something happened .

Speaker 4

Daphne and I were like mountain up , we were , we were . we were just this close to Roy and a beard when they when they thought some kid was was picking on Henry , like there was open hatred for Jake in our house .

Speaker 2

So so design Yeah hatred .

Speaker 4

Shut up , shut up And the and I thought even the way they were sitting like , henry and Michelle are together , they are wearing the jerseys they are in and this guy is like , if you're gonna be like that about it , man , go somewhere else , go do something else .

You're gonna sit , you're really gonna sit there for 90 minutes of soccer or football and and and just do this the whole time .

Speaker 2

Yeah , really , She can be up my the whole time .

Speaker 3

Yeah , this is going to be something that we deep dive . but my response was also anger at the show . Okay , we're not allowing a character to be somebody that we don't necessarily love but don't have to hate . I disliked that . they went out of their way to make us hate Dr Jake . He already was an asshole . He already was unethical .

Speaker 4

Right , right .

Speaker 3

So I was predisposed to hating him , But yeah no , and I don't particularly really care for him , but I was like why are we turning him into this ? Why are we making him so hateable ? I think , why can't we have some people be that ?

Speaker 2

boss . I read it as that they're showing us that his , his power is waning in the relationship and that this relationship is cooling , and it would be an indication that the relationship is not in good terms . That's why I thought they were trying to say with the choices .

Speaker 3

I definitely think that's what they were trying with the choices . I dislike those choices . I do not like that the show was doing that Also I dislike .

I understand that the unethical portion of it is that therapists do have more power in the relationship , but I hate that it's set up that Michelle is somehow under his spell or some shit , like she's a grown woman who made a decision that we might not like And he fucked up majorly by dating a patient .

But why is it that he now needs to be some ass hat that we want gone Like ? where is the lasso method for having people that we don't necessarily like but don't need to hate ?

Speaker 4

That's for everybody except the people having sex with Ted's ex wife . Hello . And that , yes , but I like , yeah , that's in the end notes of the lasso way , if you go to the end .

Speaker 3

Yes , the lasso way , yeah is for everyone , except for people who want to fuck Ted's wife , in which case you're dead to us , that's fair , that's fair .

Speaker 2

Oh boy , he given us a lot to think about here , boss , between the Higgins reaction and that . So it really is . When you say , oh , we don't hold Higgins accountable , that is like whoa , whoa , whoa , you're letting a man off the hook in this case .

And then it's the other way around , but the same premise which is like , oh , poor little girl , she couldn't have , you know , taken agency on her own , she just got . And it's the same , it comes from the same monster . But what so ? well said , interesting .

And I like how , how you're highlighting all the things you dislike , because it lets me make funny more in the long term , yeah that's fair . And have an episode about things . boss , You know , we'll find out how you feel about ice cream , dessert , things like that .

Speaker 3

Mm , hmm , pie over cake .

Speaker 2

I knew that .

Speaker 3

Fires in the Apolleton . Ice cream is the best , yeah , unless you could get my own form of spimone , which is pistachio , cherry and espresso or coffee . If you could get those three , i'm done .

Speaker 2

For we're going to go there on a later or later episode . Coach , i'm clarity Go . We get half time . They're down in the L2 . Ted , you have a speech . It's been an honor to be your coach . I'm going to miss you all . God , there's so much to talk about here . We don't want another future . We want to be here right now .

No , there's not so much to talk about . We don't want another future . Bosses , yeah , peace of mind , knowing we did our best . I have so much to talk about about that .

Speaker 4

That's wooden , by the way , that's straight wooden , and that's all I'll say .

Speaker 2

God damn To which anybody want to say anything . And then we get the assembly of the believe sign , where all the players Oh God , that was pretty .

Speaker 4

Remember when he talks to Henry about coaching football , the rest of the world's football , and he says it's not like and I thought about this in my controlling ways it's not like coaching American football And once you know , basically once they're out there playing , you got to trust them to do . And I felt like a lot of this episode was people were .

We had people who Ted had impacted doing the thing And in a way , as much as we would want Ted to stay and they want Ted to stay , it kind of kept feeling like I think my man's work is done here , like he ripped up that sign and their reaction was okay , he has a point , let's each take a piece of it . Like that very easily could have been .

The point is , throw that in the garbage , let's move on . But it meant so much to them . I mean , colin has it by his shin guard , like he doesn't go on the field without it . Anyway , i thought it really showed like they got

Season Finale Excitement and Delight

it , ted .

Speaker 2

I can't wait to go through every one of the . Isaac has it in his captain's armband , rashard has it in a bottle .

Speaker 4

Sam in the picture .

Speaker 2

Yeah , sam , picture Rashard's bottle , like he had when he when he did the seance thing . Jamie's is in the beautiful in the damned , which is the novel that I mean like yeah , there's a lot here , we assemble the picture And we find out what is number four . Coach , i'm not gonna throw it to boss and throw it to you , coach Believe .

Speaker 4

Yeah , i held on to love with all my , with all my might . but yeah , I get it And it felt right .

Speaker 2

I knew it would for you . I'm still processing it , i still was holding on , for I thought it was gonna be love But sacrifice .

Speaker 4

He does tell them he loved them .

Speaker 2

That's funny , but he does tell them in the speech that he loves them , so I thought that was a nod to it , but yeah it was one of those speeches was so it's so powerful also because as much as Ted is addressing his team is the cast addressing us as viewers And he's gonna miss us all . Yeah , i got emotional , i thought it was really beautiful .

We get there's no place like home And he says there ain't a lot , of , whole , whole lot of places like AFC Richmond . neither I would argue . there's no place in television history quite like AFC Richmond . Isaac simplifies Richmond on three , which is amazing . I took it , took three , three .

well , no , not really because he wasn't the captain , but a couple of years anyway for Isaac to get to right . right , yes , boss .

Speaker 3

Incorrect End of season one when Roy makes him captain the last game of the season . he does do the Richmond on 11 or whatever .

Speaker 2

So it has taken three 121212 .

Speaker 3

So it has taken the full three seasons . I mean in that he has been practicing it for three seasons three technical season .

Speaker 2

That's good . Thanks for correcting me , boss . I appreciate that .

Speaker 4

Next time feel free to do that off air .

Speaker 3

Yeah , You remember that . I forget when they did that . Oh , yeah , yeah yeah .

Speaker 2

During one of the games .

Speaker 1

Yeah , he corrected it on one air about , that was all right .

Speaker 4

He says yeah feel free to correct me off air .

Speaker 2

No , that's good And I'm glad you brought that up , because it was the count of 12 . When he's getting skipped eight , he counted when . Isaac was . Oh God , what a character Isaac . My God , color bikini . What a great . Everything about it . Love it , Love it , Love it . I'm in love .

I love the show , because I don't know if anyone's noticed that this is a pretty good show . Yeah , So we're at the second half now We get listen . You know I'm a stickler for certain things about the game of soccer , game of football itself .

They end up hitting three posts and Jamie finishes with a beautiful strike at the 51st minute And I'm like that's 51st minute is great . That's six minutes into the second half . That is , that's right . And coach and I would talk ad nauseam about how our half time speech would have been like just get one back , That's all it went .

Two to one is a completely different game than two to zero . So then Jamie flops a little bit and I was like laughing about the commentary of how the fans like you , brilliant , You like . I'm like oh , yeah , yeah . Jamie , clear sticks out his tongue was being like kind of old Jamie as much as being new Jamie .

He knows like he's so leveled and shaded now It's like amazing He hands about Danny , who we know can take amazing healthy kicks and killed dogs by accident . Football is life . Football is death , but mostly football is football . I'm also . Football is life . God , I'm going to miss that . So he gives it to who coach ? this is so fucking great .

Speaker 4

Like he gives it to Isaac and everyone's reaction is essentially what the fuck ? Rupert can be any happier . Actually , Isaac may be the most shocked person and the most incredulous person in the entire stadium . He goes to hand the ball to Colin , who's like not you should do it , man . And he says it'll be fun . I'm like they are playing for their lives .

It's everything like everybody on this team has dreamt of for at least a decade . And he's like yeah , you take it , It'll be fun . It's the second half of them were only down the goal , Like I was like , oh my God , they're living a totally different way now .

This is a guy who said you know , his team got relegated and his grandmother left them a box of her shit , or whatever .

Speaker 2

And then you know I mean like what a shift .

Speaker 4

And I just I have to throw in here because it was a call . I said , oh my God , he's going to put that ball through the back of the net . I said it out loud .

Speaker 2

I thought , i thought he was the goalkeeper into the net . I was like he's gonna hit this so hard , he's gonna push the guy into the net , like they established that yeah , he kicks . He kicks like the .

Speaker 4

I was like here it comes , because I've been waiting . I was like they didn't do that whole bit with the window for one joke . It was like there's no way . But yeah , so Isaac does take it . He misses , everyone reacts , he's put it over , goes into the crowd . We can't believe it .

At which point our official whose name isn't coming to me right now , but he's the famous official who assured Ted that he , he , had a who . Ted assured . We know he has a penis earlier . And he comes over and looks into the net and there's a hole in the back of the net .

Isaac has kicked it so hard that it went through the net up into the crowd Goal . The entire place just completely loses it . The ball hits wings night right in the nose , which delights his ring . A ding , ding , yes , yes , significant other which there's a hat for every head . Right , she loves it .

And then also , babs has finally gotten what she came for , which was a laugh out loud moment for me . So I just thoroughly . This whole sequence was just delight . That was the word Daphne is . Several times when we were watching like , oh , this is delightful , oh , wow , that's delight . And I thought this is delightful , yeah , i can't wait to deep dive .

Speaker 2

This , collins , is fun . That was the whole hang up with Isaac in the first place . Have some fucking fun when Roy brings it back And if he forgets that the game is fun And this is what you know . There's so many . It's just if you miss . There's so many things . Danny calls them L Isaac , which I've never heard him say . I'm like is like the Isaac .

Isn't that what that means ?

Speaker 4

Yeah , yeah , it's like a title Like , it's like a .

Speaker 2

Arlo says madness from 18 yards And I'm like I don't have to figure that out , because 18 yards is the penalty box , but the penalty kick is 12 yards . So I'm like , okay , what ? Okay , what's so weird ?

I love Wings Knight being the ultimate fan of Richmond because we know he's roots for city or are united whoever's winning at the time , and he's all draped out in Richmond colors . He's the ultimate . Oh God , god . I love John Winsnight . What a character . Now we go to on the field . they replace the net .

We get Rupert , who you know , at the announcement of the goal . he's left the area . Rebecca gives him a weird look . He walks past Richmond . I can't wait to deep dive this because I have thoughts about him walking through their area And what would happen like if that was a coach Bishops area .

I was in Army , ROTC , and you can't walk through people's ranks Like there was a thing I'll talk about how , yeah , after people outside the country , I come from a military family And so I grew up with a sort of military tradition And and for a while I was headed in that direction , Before my artist side took over .

But yes , I just remember that was a big no , no , like don't walk through our ranks . You know it's the Tarelloans putting the ball on the Dallas Cowboys star . I'm at Smith's exception to . There's all these moments where it's like this is the brand , this is the logo , this is the , this is our area And you don't , you do not cross that .

But anyway , we'll talk about that . In deep dive , Rupert goes and tells George Cartrick to do what boss take out Jamie .

Speaker 3

Yeah , i mean , he starts with just like Jamie is running the field , you need to get on top of him . He says we've got two men on him and he says , take him out . And then he pushes physically , assaults his manager on the field and pushes him to the ground .

Speaker 4

I was really glad That was a great choice , because when he said it I thought Cartrick would go . I thought Cartrick would bend to it , not that he would want to do it , but that his boss told him to do it . so he was going to do it . He was following orders kind of style , and I actually very much appreciated that .

Cartrick was like whoa , whoa , whoa , like I'm all for the patriarchy and I will look at a woman's bosom like anyone else , but you're not going to destroy the beautiful game on my watch . Like I thought . Like he is horrible as he is as a character .

I thought he had a , he had he is about something and that just that is not how he was going to coach the game . That's how I took , that's how it landed on me . I was shaking his head .

Speaker 2

So I think he I'm shaking my head and complete , i'm laughing because I know for the people that who have we're going to talk about some deep dive like , oh great , ted Lasso , everyone's got a road home , everybody has redemption , everybody .

That's not what I saw here , what I , what I loved the choice , loved it , god , i loved it so much because I'm like , hey , this is what he , this is where his line is . You can see people's lines . Cartridge Cartrick is a disaster of a human being . He is so nauseating as a man . He is a , he's grown .

But he does care about one thing , apparently , and he tells Rupert to fuck off . It wasn't like he's like , he's like stunned by that , like you know , that would be . It's so funny . That's where his boundary is And well , i can't wait to deep dive that . But I was like I loved the choice and loved the moment .

It was so good that he got shoved and was on the ground And there was a beautiful moment after Rupert walks off and everybody calls him wanker , and there was this thing between Ted and Cartrick where they nodded at each other and I was like God , i cannot wait to deep dive this , like I cannot wait to do this .

We got the jokes about the you know three balls and tuck yourself back in from the , from the ref or whatever , put yourself away or whatever it is .

And I was like you know , i remember when I first met disco and we all first met disco , but I remember saying on this podcast , like I kind of like you know my name's disco , but I'm not here to party or whatever . You said right , and I thought , oh , maybe he's going to be a fun character .

And then he was so gross in the meeting with Nate , and then he stood there while Rupert shoved his boss and I was like you're going to do anything ? I'm like I'm like you , suck disco . Like you , just flat out suck like nothing . He didn't stand in there to protect the . You know what I mean , like any one of us would have done .

Speaker 4

You just would be like I know what's right , At least take it easy , fellas .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , i was like , oh gross Anyway . Yeah , coach , go ahead .

Speaker 4

I'll just say like how , how we almost never just see men's bodies as like that brand of punchline . Everyone's looking in that way , right , like when we hear Shandy say , should I run across the field with my top off , we're all like , oh yeah , that's a thing . And I thought what a way to give this last unbelievable toppling of the patriarchy .

But Rupert , shoving Cartrick , his balls are out , everyone can see just exactly who Rupert is . I just thought like it is destroyed , fellas , like you have , you know , really wrecked . I mean , obviously we know patriarchy still exists at the end of the last so , but I just thought it was a great way to visually say we're not doing things that way anymore .

Speaker 2

Yeah , And , and as Rupert walked out , it wasn't lost on me that the wanker chant directed him was the field he had broken to as a kid , that his true love of his life , and he has become a pariah to everyone in there and the object of scorn and derision because of choices he's made and who he has , how he has built his life .

Speaker 4

And no matter what he does , they love him , but not anymore . Yeah , good point .

Speaker 2

Yeah , Good point . You're right , That's a great quote . Good job , coach . I also thought it was a we never get to see in Princess Bride . We never get to see Prince Humperdinck get his comeuppance .

And I was like there's this line where he'd say , you know , he says , oh , my ears , Yeah , I guess like no , no , you keep your ears and I'll tell you why , So that every shrieker , every child that's seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish . Every babe that weeps at your approach , everyone who cries out dear God , what is that thing ?

Well , that's going to your perfect ears . And I was like that is the moment that we didn't get to see that with Humperdinck , but we saw . That is the moment , was crystallized in that moment , where it was everybody , everybody . Let him know exactly where he stood .

Speaker 3

So I'm going to have some issues that I'll bring up later with parts of the lasso way , or whatever it becomes called . I very much want to point out , though , that Ted stood on the same field and had everybody call him wanker , and he was able to shake it off , and Rupert cannot .

So there's a big part about even when Rupert is powerful , he's not powerful enough to withstand other people's opinions of him

Ted Lasso Season 2 Finale Breakdown

.

Speaker 2

Yeah , What's that SNL sketch where it's everything in this world that is . There's a couple of things . Just to go on my Twitter . There's something about women saying , oh , if there were no men who would protect us ? And then the next thing is like protect us from who You know . So there's that .

And then there's the thing on SNL where it's like white male rage is the like , it's all white male rage . That's it Like white male right , like what's behind every single thing . This is the physical embodiment of this . Guy shoves down and he doesn't get his way . He's going to be a baby , he's going to be physically violent , he's going to break the rules .

Yeah , whatever it takes . And we've had millennia of this and enough is enough . And I'm glad the show took a position on it . Now we get that nod to George Kartrick . That I mean it's not as the anything's . George Kartrick is at least one beat of decency . And then West Ham scores and Ted laughs . And why does he laugh , coach ?

Speaker 4

14 was offside And I just went . you guys , you guys , i loved that moment .

Speaker 2

I loved it . Oh my God , he knows what off-sides is now .

Speaker 4

Yeah , And just knows it Like he , just like it's not even like Hey , was that , like he is sort of . For me was like an extension of the total football , Just like once he gets it , he gets it and he gets it down .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and he's , and he is a humble and his in his halftime speech he says you know , i didn't know anything about soccer . I know at least one thing about football and they all kind of smile .

But like he also designed the quintessential football program and he knows what offside it just in time to to leave and and and not be part of the game anymore , which is a so , so bittersweet . Now we get to stoppage time . They cut a net down . There were injuries .

There would have been like eight or 10 minutes of stoppage time , but in TV land we get one minute left . The bonehead play you'll ever see somebody grabs . I think it was Richard , or was it . There was a call in somebody grab , yeah , and it makes this some kind of penalty . And Richmond gets a indirect kick and Ted is freaking out .

He says talk to me , geese , which is top gun reference . You guys get that , which is funny because instead of just goose , It's both .

Speaker 4

Yeah , i mean , i missed it , but that's good , that's funny .

Speaker 2

He's looking for ideas and he sees Nate sitting there . Who's an idea guy ? and isn't it poetic that the moment that and listen it's Ted coming up with this , It's not Nate . He doesn't . He doesn't delegate this , He doesn't . They're , they're , they're trying to think of all the different things . And the guys are shooting him down .

No , this won't work , this won't work . Roy and Beard are there . No one's got an idea . And Ted says , okay , actually we're going to go with Nate's old place . So he uses him as a standard just to explain what the play is to to to Jamie and Sam and telegraph it .

And there's this beautiful moment where they at least is Oscar Espy , we get all the pantomime , they realize it . And Sam Obisanya , he says that , takes that deep breath like holy , fuck , like , and we say coach , there are guys , men and women all over the world . It's not just guys .

I'm saying guys because it's this team which is all men , but men and women and people the world across who , when the game is on the line , when the moment in their life is on the line , they want to have the ball , they want to have control , they want to make the one , the decision , or be there in a key moment , to be a key player .

And Sam Obisanya is going to be that . Jamie does the . Oh my God . I went back and I watched the scene where he was so insulted to be a decoy He was . Is this a joke ? Yeah , i could not believe it . He was so insulted that they would use him like that And in this scene , me , me , me , i want the ball . Pass me the ball , please .

He does it , the exact thing that Ted said , which is preposterous .

Speaker 4

The arms , the whole thing . It's ridiculous , unbelievable .

Speaker 2

Ted sees it happening , and what does he say , coach ? What does he say as this comes in ?

Speaker 4

He said barbecue sauce And I got chills . The warmth that filled me . When he said barbecue sauce , i was like wow .

Speaker 2

Boss , we're simple . We are simple men . Okay , She is looking at us like we are children . She is just like what are you ? I don't . It was beautiful .

Speaker 4

Barbecue sauce was the moment where he saw that He said barbecue sauce . I was like , oh my God , oh my God , it also had a taste of home boss .

Speaker 2

There's a lot in here . It's hard to write this stuff .

Speaker 3

I believe that it is .

Speaker 2

I believe you , i know .

Speaker 3

That's it .

Speaker 4

You know that , that is it . You know that , Yeah sure .

Speaker 3

I want everyone to love the things that they love .

Speaker 2

Thank you . Thank you , i appreciate that I did love it And I loved AJ and me doing it . I loved the whole . I loved it . I loved everything .

It was a great choice to end on the fact that it was Nate's original concept but now Ted is employing it , the fact that everybody knew what to do , the fact that Bumbercatch knew what to do , the fact that Dixon who we've never seen before or whatever I don't know what Dixon is was in on the play to pass the mow All this stuff worked perfectly .

And I will say that we notice , when people actually are athletes , the form of Sam's kick . Like you know , i've taught kids how to kick before and boy , that was beautiful , kept his head down , followed through with beautiful points . I mean , like the whole thing is that's how you keep it low .

That's why one of the big problems with teaching kids to kick once you get some power , you sky it over . You kick field goals all the time because you just want to blow the top off it , like how it does . And Sam kept it low . A little ground ball with eyes , or they call it a worm burner And bam , sam scores , place goes absolutely berserk .

And Mike Reed , mike Reedy , what was the ?

Speaker 4

trend . That sounds right . Mike Reedy , that's close to that , yeah , i forget , i forgot his name .

Speaker 2

It blows the whistle three times . The game's over place . It's pandemonium . I love the . Ted took the moment to shake George's hand , unlike what Nate did when there was pandemonium . In that first win We get the beat of Colin kissing his fella , which is what I really wanted to do .

I only half bought it because in those moments you tend to celebrate with your team . First I was like , okay , that's sweet , they had to work this in . But like I'm like there's just this , you know what happens , coach , you go crazy .

Speaker 3

And it's the team .

Speaker 2

It's like it reminds me of . I always joke with my kids and I do the special jump that World Series teams do on the final out of the World Series where they start jumping . It's like their feet can't . They're like a kangaroo , they can't you know when they all just start to take power . They're like , yeah , it's crazy And it's usually so .

It's not graceful at all because they can't , they're losing their minds , their body just wants to vault .

So we have this beautiful moment and this moment of redemption and acceptance from with Colin and he makes this beautiful choice and it's fantastic and shouldn't even be , shouldn't even be something we noticed in this world in 2023 , shouldn't even be a fucking conversation . But God damn it , there we are Just just living in the dark ages in this world .

I swear to God . Keely says to Rebecca look what you did . Rebecca crying in this scene , i can't tell you . Hannah awading him is so amazing . If you look at her face , i'm blown away , blown away by emotions . Oh my God , how , how is she this ? good , it is stunning .

The Ted Lasso Series Finale Review

And then coach what happens here on the field with the team .

Speaker 4

Because they said Orlando , here you go , buddy , we know , we know you were in , we know you were in before the opening credits , friend , and we're giving you this . He does the dance for them . This is it , and apparently , once the the Ted Lasso experience is coming to its close , this is the dance you get .

And so I just I savored it , and the team goes nuts , as you might , as you would expect , And I just thought that was , yeah , i very much appreciated that being there . That is Ted's full on expression of joy and love , and there it all was .

Speaker 2

Yeah we , the screen goes black . Absolutely beautiful moment . What a callback , what a beat . Ted is in the airport And if you look at , we'll get into this in the deep dive . But I mean the sheer number of things on on these covers of the magazine . I mean this is amazing .

Isaac is featured on a football magazine , pep has a clothing line , bex gets a book deal , shandy launches the dating app , star fucker , what else ? I tried to jot them down as quickly as I saw them . Rebecca chose to sell the shares to Richmond season to Richmond residents of Richmond .

You know , like a public offering of the 49% , something that says Jack Danvers is no longer daddy's little girl . I don't know , maybe she's out , i don't know . Interesting Miss Cakes is going to be contested on Les Conkers Hall . Iax . The Dutch team they played wins the LVZ , wins their division in the Netherlands wins their league .

There's a article called the quiet genius of Leslie Higgins . Zorro , i guess , now is going to star in the Jean-Claude Van Damme remake of Escape to Victory Just so funny , and in a headline that mirrors the Zatane thing that I talked about when the player that Zava is based on went to the LA Galaxy . Zava returns to football , joining Los Angeles FC .

So , yeah , rupert's out . That's a key thing . 49% . Ted is walking And we get the Aussie guy from season one Yeah , are you , ted Lasso ? I'm one of them . And he says unlucky at the end , which is another callback with the New York Jets reference . He says wicked . Ted says kinky boots , which is a right musical reference . I'm sure boss loved that one .

Speaker 3

I didn't know both of them , even though I don't . There you go , i am aware of both And I did catch it as a musical reference .

Speaker 4

Oh , I didn't know . Kinky boots . We got it .

Speaker 2

So Rebecca is waiting for him in the boarding area . She has bought a first class ticket out of habit , just to say proper goodbye . It is beautiful , coach , go ahead .

Speaker 4

Yeah , quickly , i , just I . When he started into the airport after you know , we see the magazines which I did not catch , all of that . As we were watching at that sort of recovering from everything we had just been through , i said out loud , is Rebecca going to come running through this airport ?

And so I thought , oh cool , like they found a way as they've done with a lot of things they found a way to kind of give me the thing I wanted , right , and I think that's been one of the things I have enjoyed about the storytelling is like they do get relegated And you know Ted does go . You know what I mean .

Like there are things that I'm like no , no , no , it has to be this way . And they're like what if it isn't quite that way ? And I'm like , damn it , you're right , that works . And that that was my feeling about finding her there , or , you know , seeing her there and the scene that followed .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and you know , they didn't win the fucking , they didn't win the Premier League . I'm like what Remember ?

Speaker 3

all I cared about was like they won't say I mean they did win it all .

Speaker 2

It's fine , they did everything they could . I mean you're not going to be pep . That man city team is nasty clearly .

Speaker 4

But And they beat him head to head Like that's a conversation sports fans will now have forever . Oh , we won that year . Yeah Well , head to head , We beat your ass .

Speaker 2

Remember they smushed them in that game . That was , that was dominant . Yeah , you're right . So Ted says oh , classic rom , romcom , leave cute tactic instead of a meet cute tactic . She says I know you want to go to your family , but I actually want to stay with mine , which is now that she views them as family . Absolutely beautiful .

We get a joke about club matriarch as opposed to soccer mom , and then there's a gorgeous moment . I cannot wait to deep dive . I'm not going to make it .

I'm not going to make it through this , through this rapid response , because that thank you won't click it , boss smiling , i know , i know , boss , we just , i mean , wait no not for you boss , i know you're not built for this . You're not built for this .

Speaker 3

This is not my , this is not my cup .

Speaker 4

Oh , wow , oh . I can't wait to discuss . I'm legitimately kind of surprised . I really thought like yeah . Anyway , we'll get to it .

Speaker 2

Yeah , we'll get . We'll get to it . But a beautiful moment where they each say thank you , they really mean it . Again , hannah wanting him .

I'm just looking at her face , or expressions , her emotion , and listen , that's not to malign Sudakis at all , because that choice I told you about to hold it all inside , and the resolve of its decision , and how he's not Ted Lasso , which is equally impressive . I kept thinking God , how much he loves his son to give up this family that he's built .

We get onto the plane We get . Is this nuts again ? Which is how we started ? Oh God , that's powerful . And I think about how far we've come as with the show , and how beautiful it is and all the memories we have . You know , listen , all people are different people . Don't fight back , fight forward . Don't flip out till you find out .

I've learned to love my dad for who he is and forgive him for who he isn't . These are just thinking of all the things . Listen to me , don't you dare settle for fine , if you're with the right person Be a goldfish . Right , be a goldfish . Right , be curious , not judgmental . Onward forward , the truth will set you free , but first it'll piss you off .

It's the hope that kills you . We could go on and on and on These moments we didn't have . The first time Ted Lasso said to Coach Beard , is this nuts ? And I felt profoundly it's just moving , this is very moving .

And they trickly cut it with air conditioning as a privilege , not a right , and Beard takes off his glasses and we find out he can't do this And blast us through the rest of this as fast as you can please , boss .

Speaker 3

Highlights are number one He has to stay because he loves Jane and he can't leave . He says he needs to get off the plane . Ted says what about your luggage ? He says I can buy new stuff . It's all garbage anyway . I was a mess when I was packing . He tells Ted that he loves him . Ted says I love you too , willis . I don't know about that .

We'll follow up on that . but I don't know about that one . And then he splashes water on his face and fakes appendicitis in order to get off the plane . We'll talk about that . I feel like there's a lot going on there .

This is , unfortunately for me , one of those points where they went for the funny big scene instead of doing something reasonable , which is , number one , get off the plane . or , number two , just fucking take the flight and then fly back , go home and clean some shit up and then come back Like it didn't work for me .

Speaker 4

Hmm , hmm , hum .

Speaker 2

Yeah , i mean , imagine Jane , if he did do that , you know , watching that plane take off . I don't know . I assume she's lurking , because isn't she always ? isn't that what Jane Payne does ? Just lurks at Keely's house and things . There's a funny little inside baseball moment where the flight attendant offers for him to go with and he says no , no , i'm good .

And then she walks away and says what a fucking asshole . And you're like oh yeah , of course that's the one that the National Enquirer is going to find , that one person and that's how he will be painted in the media Or online or God knows wherever the hell people get their hot takes about , which celebrities are dicks . And Ted .

In a moment that rocked me and my core , ted takes off .

Father-Son Storylines and Life Reflections

They of course bring in Father and Son by Cat Stevens , which , if it's going to murder me the way it did at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 , with the Yondu storyline , which is another Father Son plotline , i think something about man . There's just as many of a certain age here with these . Father Son storylines are just , it's just putty .

Go ahead , coach .

Speaker 4

Well , there's a and I'm sure I've mentioned it at some point as we've gone along but there's a great documentary about the 1983 NT State Wolfpack College basketball team And they were just the unlikeliest champions ever and coached by Jim Valvano , and one of the things that one of the players says as they're recounting this amazing journey that they went on , he

says you know we're , you know we're all getting to be around 50 years old And it's a time in your life where you see both ends of your life with increasing clarity And I thought you know , probably watch that , i don't know , two or three years ago , you know I'm 48 , 47 , and I thought , oh yeah , that's exactly right .

Like I feel like I have a really specific take on my life as a boy . I have a very specific take of my life , on my life now as a man , having been a husband and a father and having gone out into the world and tried things and failed at things and whatever . And I think I also have an appreciation for the you know the guy I'm going to become .

Like I spent time , spent time with my father-in-law , just like generally , but like we fixed the patio door together and we would ever And I just get a kick out of just talking to him about shit . And he told me some shit that really you know , like when my kids were two or three and he gave me .

He didn't give a ton of advice on father , he just you know , we just talked But the one thing he said was make sure you enjoy them . He said it goes by quick . He said make and maybe , if he doesn't tell me that , maybe I don't jump into the coaching as soon . I don't know , whatever . But anyway , i thought that was what I felt through .

This whole scene was like I get it , i get all of it . I get why he went home . If he hadn't gone home , i'd get why he didn't go home . I just thought like he did , he did for him the rightest thing , but I felt like I got it And I think that's what got me is like there was no easy . There was no easy answer .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's beautiful , coach . I told you when I watched it last night when it came out , went to bed and then woke up and started working on the show doc and watching it again . And my son is home from college and he came down . It was just me and him in the house . Everybody else was at school or work and he slept in .

And when he came down he just he just heard me crying And he was like what's going on ? I was like listen . He watched his head last , so he listened to the podcast . He's such a good egg , love that boy . And I was like you know , you're in a hurry . He's in a real hurry to speed up his life , for time to speed up .

He really wants to get his life cooking and I'm in a hurry to slow life down , slow time down and really breathe it in , because you blink and it's gone And , yes , it's powerful . When this music started playing , we see the moment with Rebecca the tish pay off . The little girl runs or she falls , which happens with kids all the time . It's so funny .

It was like somebody who has kids knows . Yeah , go ahead , coach .

Speaker 4

For a split second did you ? did that feel to you like little Rebecca from the mirror , because I was like what the hell's happening right now I thought it was going to be like some , like spiritual love , like moment , yeah .

So we'll talk about what actually happens , but I that was my initial thought was like , is she sort of like having another moment with little Rebecca ?

Speaker 2

That is a beautiful take . I did not see that , but I can't wait to rewatch it and look for it . It turns out , of course , that her little girl's father is a gazelle , a man , Matteo Vantiglien . He hears Rebecca's first name for the first time .

Speaker 4

Total podcasting .

Speaker 2

God damn , she was in that little girl's . Remember how she reacted when she was in that boat and she saw the whole thing . I mean I'm just like , oh my God . We knew it . We knew it and our listeners were counting on it and we had the poll . But Jesus Christ to see it and really knocked my socks off .

Speaker 4

I didn't love it , i gotta be honest . That's why I said total podcasting And I know I'm like I'm totally boss . Now boss is going to have to sing something , but no , but really I feel like I was like really , guys , like we've done so , like no , no , no , but .

But Daphne was totally like I don't care , that's who she needs to be with , i'm happy , i don't care , and I was like really a lucky chance because she went to the airport and she left at exactly that second . A girl trips in front of her and it's gazellings What , what , what .

Speaker 2

I didn't care about any of that , I don't know . For me I was like I just want her to have the experience of being a mom because she wants it so badly . That's all I cared about . I just wanted her to get there , That's it .

Speaker 4

No , no , no , no . All of that was great , but to me , if she had just taken her billionaire self down to that boat and said , rebecca , nice to meet you , like I would have a totally different experience for me . Or if somebody shows up at his boat with you know tickets to the AFC Richmond game , he's like what the fuck ? And then he goes .

He's like you're kidding me , you're the owner of AFC Richmond . I just didn't buy the like . I have providence , i get it and there's a bunch of stuff I'll get into . And you know why did Rebecca go on YouTube and find Ted Lasso ? I get that , some of that sum of this story .

Ted Lasso Season Finale Recap

But that was a lot . That was a lot for me to accept at that moment .

Speaker 3

Yeah , That's sometimes . It's strange , even on a show where you want everything to work out . It needs to be reasonable And I don't know if that felt reasonable . It would have felt like more of a character choice if she had gone back for him .

I would like to point out that , because he is presumably a pilot based on his uniform , he's literally a flying Dutchman , and I don't know if you guys care about that , but I , as a pun lover , did enjoy that Whoa . Now .

Speaker 4

I don't like this Pun intentional writing .

Speaker 3

Yeah , fantastic then . I love when I can ruin something for you .

Speaker 4

Hey , you know what that was . You might as well make a total punditry . Boom , boom , boom , boom All right Moving right along .

Speaker 2

You guys are having way too much fun with this . We get a Trent reading the notes from Beard and Ted Beards . the manuscript from Beard is 3,000 post-it notes , a couple thoughts , he says , or something like that . And meanwhile Ted just says he loved it , but it was one thing , It was never about him . He just thinks he should change the name .

I didn't love the name . change the Richard Way . I think it is the Lasso Way .

Speaker 4

Yeah , i thought it was too like , it was too eagulous for me . I was like it's not true , because it wasn't the fucking Richmond Way at Wichita State . I mean you can name it something other than the Lasso Way , call it Total Football , i mean I guess you can call that , but whatever , like Total Organization , total Love , i don't know something , total Belief .

But the Richmond Way for me was like no incorrect .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , i get it . I can't wait to deep dive that . We get a thing of KBPR , which I'm guessing Keely Barbara PR . very interesting . We get Roy Kent introduced as the new manager of Richmond NFC , where his in the place of the place of honor is the covered up the covered up portrait of Keely's boobs . Is that right ?

Is that what that was , the tape over the boobs ?

Speaker 4

It's what it reminded me of , but I wasn't quite clear what was going on there .

Speaker 2

Coach , you just you just take umbrage anytime boobs are covered up . I think in general , that's your You and boss . She's smiling . Okay , we see that they got like new warmups , new , new , new sort of new colors for the new season . Nate is with his family .

Again , we're flying through this everybody I know that but we got some , some things to cover and this is a rapid response and we're already over two hours . Nate is with his family . Tastes of Athens . Looks like he's getting along well with everybody . We did see Derek in the background , which I was happy doing , doing his same thing .

God knows what , what laws he's fracturing in the back there , nate's at the head of the table .

Speaker 4

Sorry , I had to say it . I'm sorry I'm going to go back on mute now . Bye .

Speaker 2

Oh yeah , good , good point , and his tim and his dad look like they're getting along great . Maybe my favorite moment of the whole thing is Sam as a Super Eagle , which the nickname for the men's Nigerian soccer team . At first I thought , wait , did they trade Sam ? And I was like no , no , those are . I know those those kids . I was root for that team .

It's so much fun . I've never seen anyone come out of Africa for the World Cup and it's so much fun to watch them . And yeah , that was no amount of money to keep Sam Obisanya off the Nigerian team . So fuck you , edwin Akufo . He couldn't . He still right , he didn't have that much pull to keep Sam's raw talent off . You know that's life goal .

That happened there . I am definitely going to zip past the next beat , which is Jamie bonding with James Sr . That's going to be a road too far for some people , but I can't wait to talk about it . We have a cookout where Roy , jamie and Kele are all at the same cookout .

It's funny to see the little , these little , what it looks like in a European cookout , because here in America like we just have vast stretches of backyard As far as I can see , i'm like everyone's jammed in . It might be healthier to have , like you know , the shared space there . We , we get shares of the team for PB&J with all three names on it .

I thought it was nice . They don't get their own , they share a share of Richmond . It's their team . We're just borrowing it for a while . Beautiful , beautiful thing . May gets her own . Looks like a stack that May has . May straightens a picture of Geronimo . One of them , baz or Jeremy , goes to touch her share and she swats his hand away .

But she is adjusting the shot . There's a picture of Geronimo , the legendary Native American chieftain , or say Chum , on the wall of the bar And that is a callback to the final shot of Cheers where Sam Malone adjusted that . And the reason they did that , i think , is because Sam Malone is played by the remarkable Ted Danson .

Norm on the show is played by George Wendt , who is Jason Sudeikis's uncle of Chicago , chicago fame .

Speaker 3

Right , boss , they're both from , or George Wendt's from Chicago area , correct , and I've got more info on Jason Sudeikis's family . Later We'll get into that .

Speaker 2

We get a shot of this is all as continuing through Kat Stevens , tearing the heart out of anyone with a soul . And then I have another one , which is a very important signing books . The book features a very brief forward by Roy Kent , which I can only imagine . How brief that might be , it might be him growling .

The person that he's signing for is Shannon , the girl that Ted used to play with .

Speaker 4

Coach is going , oh yeah , yeah , i didn't catch that I didn't put it in , yeah .

Speaker 2

Now maybe my other favorite moment , where I was cheering To take you . I think that's really a great point in that there areouse . I think that's the way it really approaches .

Speaker 4

It's funny , like a KBPR joint which is a Spike Lee reference , right , Isn't he the ?

Speaker 2

only one that caused them a joint . Yeah , i definitely thought that that makes sense from this show . A totally was a reference . Yeah , and it's a folder .

Speaker 3

Hard copy folders Rebecca opens it up And it's just a proposal for- .

Speaker 4

Aww , the woman's team , the Richmond women's team is going to break them , so fired up . When that happened , i said yes , out loud .

Speaker 2

Yes , yeah , that was awesome , i jumped up , i was just so fired up Because it's a question . It's like why isn't there a rich ? but why isn't there ? Why doesn't this ? exist . Right and yeah .

So I can't wait to talk about this on the deep dive , because I have a daughter just graduated from high school , is going to go into this field And we got some interesting news about that And I'm just so , so fired up for this journey . Then we got Dr Sharon back , with Roy and an army man . She is the head of emotional health and well-being at Richmond .

She's back home . We have Nate painting . They're wrapping a lot of things up here . I have trouble keeping up with all the stuff that's cooking . I was wildly happy to see Dr Sharon back . Despite my many complaints about what a pain in the neck she can be without the waves and the door closing . I was so happy to see her .

Her heart's always been in the right place . We saw what she did with working with Ted And it's exciting to think of what she might be able to do with Roy . We see Nate painting And then , next scene , we see them hanging the belief sign back up , painted with gold paint , the Kintsugi method , appropriately again .

Oh my god , when we deep dive this , i can't even . I'm going to be a puddle . Now we get the beard wedding , which , ok , there's no way in hell . Ted is missing the wedding . So there's this . You know , whatever We can talk about it , we can talk about whatever . I just don't ever imagine Ted would miss the beard .

I thought this was Ted dreaming on the plane And there's like this shot of the light . It was clear . It was also clearly . The CG was terrible in the background . I thought it was intentional to make it feel dreamlike . But anyway , we'll talk about all this . Beard is wearing the pants that he was gifted a beard after hours .

And the couple from beard after hours was there . Do you see that boss ?

Speaker 3

Yes , I definitely did . Also , beard and jain are holding hands and wrapped in red string .

Speaker 2

Oh , my god , i mean , there's so much . I can't wait to do the deep dive on this . Ted wakes up in the plane , the light , the sun on his face , which has mirrored the shot which I thought OK , that's what's happening .

As he was dreaming this , he is reading Michael Pollan's How to Change Your Mind , the book about psychedelics , which , oh yeah , it's a whole new chapter . We cut to Ted and the car coming home . Henry is waiting in the window . There's a free library out in front of the Lasso House , of course , of course there is Probably got the best books in it .

I would think once upon a time . I'm guessing this is Ted's family home and that he probably looked at his neighbors and curated the books inside , hoping that each one would find their right book . Knowing Ted , we pan up to the sky and finally , katsuyvins . The song ends and I'm able to breathe again .

Ted Lasso Season 3 Wrap-Up

And then we cut to the very final moment . We write Henry's game . Henry gets past , misses a shot . Ted calls him over , tells him to be what ? coach ?

Speaker 4

What do we say ? Be a goldfish .

Speaker 2

Yeah , be a goldfish . And then we go ahead coach .

Speaker 4

No , i was just going to for me . What I loved about this and I think it's almost Roy's coaching journey in reverse is and I have found this to be true if you're a coach , you're a coach , that's what you're going to do .

I remember being at your house and your father in law was like we were helping him walk and come up onto that uneven ground And as he stepped up and he did it , i went there , you go , and you just started laughing . You're like you can't even help it , can you ? Yeah , always coaching . I was like I guess I did just coach your father in law .

Speaker 2

Ok , yeah yeah , i remember that .

Speaker 4

He's a coach . He's always going to be a coach . And Premier League , aysl he's a coach . Be a goldfish .

Speaker 2

We get Ted . We finally get that shot that I mentioned last episode of Ted . This is the bookend shot And he's smiling . The Flaming Lips plays Fight Test , which was so similar to the Cat Stevens songs that we heard the father and son songs , apparently that the Flaming Lips were sued by Cat Stevens And they have to pay royalties , oh shit .

So yeah , something I got to look more into that . I just saw it anecdotally . But we end on that And with that the epic saga of Ted Lasso comes to an end .

Speaker 4

I'll say it felt to me and obviously they were doing this with that last bit , but I really appreciate that . I really didn't feel it came to an end . I felt my time with them came to an end . But I very much believe that Keely and Babs were about to build the PR agency version of ASC Richmond .

I very much believe that the team was in great hands with Rory Beard and Nate .

Speaker 2

I really , you know , like I just I didn't Definitely All the best world building makes you feel like you're seeing a slice of a world that exists rather than something that was written for your consumption , and so yeah , this world will go on And I loved it . Our podcasting world will also go on , And so this is not the end .

For Boss and Coach and I , We have more deep dives that will keep coming And we but in general you know , this has been something And we can't wait to really get into the nitty gritty of everything . We're going to continue this .

To those people who are asking are we going to finish the episodes ? We never finished with season two ? Yes , we are . That's on the docket . We will be here . We will be . I want to say thank you on behalf of myself and Coach and Boss , because it's been wonderful having you take this ride with us , take this journey with us . In so many ways .

This show was all about the journey and not the destination , and to have met people from all over the world who have joined this community , It's really built something special for us , And I want to say thank you .

Speaker 4

I want to toss in that , in terms of it continuing , it does feel like the building of a community to me , and our relationship with the Buttercups , the email that we share and all that .

It feels much more to me like the moment at the end of our Sound of Music , shout out with everybody in on the final notes and cheering , and I'm actually looking forward to that piece .

We've had a great conversation , but now I feel like the definition of we is expanding And that's part of what I'm enjoying and I'm hoping continues and actually grows Is , yeah , like , share those pieces with us . You know QoB , called Bex , is going to take West Ham And I was like , really , could it be so ? And that's exactly you know .

So I just I'm looking forward to that piece too . Talking to you has been great more so , boss , let's be honest But , but no , but I'm really looking forward to the , to the exchange and the interchange , and to those of you who've been sort of saying yeah , go , you know , go and come back with this orange and green .

I'm working , i'm working , and there's some other stuff along those lines that I'm working on too , but this has just been amazing , amazing , yes .

Speaker 3

I will echo that I don't want to do it too much because I'm me , but I enjoy these conversations significantly more than I've enjoyed Even my favorite episode of Teflasso . So this this is very good . Oh wow , even when I'm a bitch , this is very good .

Speaker 2

It's high praise , high praise , boss . Yes , we'll be back with a very special episode . We're going to talk about our lingering reaction to this . We're going to also tell you what's going on in the future . We want some input from you guys . So the next poll will be up . I have all sorts of fun things planned for that .

The podcast is done with the rapid responses to Teflasso , but we're going to continue with the last episode . We're done , and then we have a few really , really fun things planned And we hope that everybody will join us in this community . It is , it has been so much fun and we are thrilled , thrilled , thrilled to to have you join us . It's , it's .

Speaker 4

you . You can find me at WeAlign , which is our online community for online performance , and , like Ted , i believe in belief and shows up there , so come through and learn some about what we're doing and put it into action in your own life .

Speaker 2

Boss , what about you ?

Speaker 3

On Twitter at Dumbly underscore chambers tweeting about my reaction to this and at the antagonist blog writing about my concerns on this episode . That's antagonistblogcom . Okay , everyone .

Speaker 2

Thank you so much for joining us for this final rapid reaction of rapid response . It's not a reaction coach . Rapid response . Episode of season three , three , episode 12 . Support the written word , support your local libraries And until next time we are Richmond till we die . All right , that works , that works , coach . There you go . Thanks , i love you .

Speaker 4

Oh , that was beautiful , i knew that , Thanks everybody .
