Speaker 1

Welcome to our Ted Lasso talk , the Tedcast . Welcome all Greyhound fans , welcome all you sinners from the dog track and all the AFC Richmond fans around the world . It's the lasso way around these parts with Coach , coach and Boss , without further ado , coach Castleton .

Speaker 2

Okay , welcome back beautiful people , Welcome back Buttercups and Friends of Buttercups . This is the Tedcast We are doing , season three , episode 11 . Ah , episode 11 . There's only one left . It is called Mom City , written by Joe Kelly , directed by Declan Lone , and I am your host , coach Castleton . With me , as always , is Coach Bishop .

Speaker 3

Jamie , oh my God , oh my God , i can't breathe , i can't breathe .

Speaker 2

I can't breathe . We are . We are doing our rapid response . I'm sure I'll start to call it a rapid reaction . The key element is that , as long as you get the sense of like a network TV 911 call , that we're on the job early .

There used to be a show where they say I forget which show it was , but it was like in the event of a disaster , 99% of people run away from the whatever , and this shows about the 1% who run back . So that's us Coach .

Speaker 3

Tonight we are That's it , that's it .

Speaker 2

We're on the job . Heroic , heroic . Yeah , so hard , so hard to watch the show and do what we do Right Right Man Man . We hope everyone appreciates it , i will say that we have the best listeners of any podcast on the planet Never fails to amaze me , and so , in an effort to please those wonderful people , let's start talking about this episode .

Coach , we have not talked about it , we are we decided to roll .

Speaker 3

This is fresh , yeah .

Speaker 2

So all right , so I thought you would love it . You were right .

Speaker 3

Okay , all right . Good , i thought I thought so You were right .

Speaker 1

Oh , my goodness .

Speaker 3

Yeah , go ahead So no , no , no , let's .

Speaker 2

actually I think it's very important in this case to at least start with almost no structure and let's just fanboy and just dig into whatever we loved about it And then yeah . So , by the way , folks , we're recording this . I don't mean to show you how recording . This is just past midnight in the east .

And I texted I texted our editor , luke , and I said Hey , man , just you know we're gonna , we're gonna try to get this in early so we can get this up . And and I , just when you started talking , coach , this is what came in . Oh , you mean , the greatest fucking episode of television ever . Yeah , i think we should get that up as fast as possible .

So okay .

Speaker 3

So yeah , i don't know that I can disagree with that . I thought so many things that happened were exactly what we were told was going to happen And yet it was stunning .

They were like think , like I felt stunned several times And I don't know , that's a word I've used a lot in this particular for this particular show , but I that's finally entire episode stunning , jamie , i mean . Oh , you know for him to . He was befuddled when Roy was cheered , he didn't under . He was like what are they doing ?

He's an old man who gives a crap And he grew so much that he then got to experience it , not just anywhere But Man City , where they were there to destroy him . I mean , yes , what , yeah , what , wow . And , by the way , ted's mom , what's her name ? Ted's mom , daddy , oh yeah , what's that ? What's that usually a nickname for ?

Speaker 2

Dorothy motherfucker . I just realized that , whoa .

Speaker 3

I was watching , i said no . I even googled it to be sure , like I wasn't making a connection . Yeah , yeah , it's time . It's time to go back to Kansas , buddy .

Speaker 2

Jesus , i guess . So Oh my . God , I did not connect that at all Jesus .

Speaker 1

Coach , you know what We talk .

Speaker 2

We spent a lot of time talking about . You know our various burdens we carry around every day . We both have ADHD . I forgot to mention that Boss is not with us on this episode , totally hilarious .

Speaker 3

No , no , but everyone's waiting . They're going . Hey , where is what is happening ?

Speaker 2

I haven't heard that , That piercing cackle , I wonder where . Yeah , she's on assignment folks , But I didn't want to mention , in case you're waiting around to hear some insights from her , they will be absent this evening Or when you get this tomorrow on the podcast , on the listen . What am I saying , Coach ? Coach , what's happening ? Yeah , doesn't actually .

I'm not sure to start talking .

Speaker 3

Yeah , I think you're saying that they're gonna miss Boss . I know I miss Boss , i definitely miss Boss here . So no , we will do . we will do our best to make it feel like the triangle is intact . We know the triangle is not intact , but we are .

we're gonna total , podcast this and make sure that we also consider where holes might be or what might not have seemed fulfilling , but I , for me , this episode delivered . I mean this episode .

Speaker 2

And we usually would try to approximate Boss's reaction to it . but I'm gonna , i'm gonna take the side of joy on this one And just gonna pretend like she loved it too . Yeah , standout moments Did you have any favorite Like when you come away from this episode ? okay .

so for me I'll say I needed , we talked about what we wanted , right , and you were just like . Hey , i hey , man , you were like a child of the 60s , you're just like whatever man , this VW bus is so sweet , like , wherever they drive is cool with me . Man And Boss Boss was similar .

Actually she was like I just wouldn't you know , like I'm on , i'm here for the ride .

Speaker 1

I'm not gonna attach any information .

Speaker 2

But for me I said I need them to beat Man City , needs them to beat pep , absolutely need it , need to see it , and so for me that was that was pretty great , and seeing Jamie become Roy Kent .

Speaker 3

Right .

Speaker 2

I was thinking had that poster on his wall his whole life , so so weird that he ends up with Keely and Ryan . that's craziness . If I was his mom I'd be like what is happening ?

Speaker 3

But Providence , that's what's happening .

Speaker 2

Yeah , well listen we'll get into that For sure , if you , if you see Roy Kent , and we know what this is . there are players . it doesn't matter the sport , they just become beloved because some , you know some , some ethereal toughness or you know great how they carry themselves whatever it is .

I can think of so many athletes and so many sports and people just love them . And Jamie coming up with the life . He had the father , he had all the talent in the world . There was no avenue in the early days for him to become that type of player . There was no way that was going to happen .

And yet in the three years we've been watching this show , it makes absolute sense that inside of the lasso way he did that , in front of our eyes , he became that player , not only who saved the day , but also turned the entire state . He was so impressive .

Speaker 1

I mean his home stadium .

Speaker 2

That was against him , right ?

Speaker 3

I mean it's just , yeah , i was well , now that you just said that , it reminds me of Henry running out onto the field and listen and being showered with wanker And it sounding very different now And it was a beloved you know wanker being chanted by the end of the game . I believe that was balls , was that ? was that episode .

Speaker 2

Would you say Henry , running out onto the field ?

Speaker 3

Henry running out to Ted . Oh , Henry ran out to Ted and he threw him up on his shoulder And they were yelling wanker . But at the end of the game it sounded a lot different than the beginning of the game And so I thought , you know even that , even that , as you were describing , i went Oh my God , they even echoed that .

But for me the moment worked in itself . I think sometimes , when I'm making these connections , i skip saying but I liked this , like it's not that I just enjoy the fact that there's all this referential stuff that gets paid off , it's that for me it's amazing that that's being done to add layers of meaning to a story that , for me , is working .

You know what I mean ? Oh yeah , i'm totally . I what I texted and I'm not confident that I'm right now , because I feel like now they're just like we are toying with you .

Speaker 2

We are toyed with you . Oh , oh , oh . I mean , the last scene is how you're talking about that . Oh I thought they were . This is so funny . There was like something you know . So for Game of Thrones there was book readers and show watchers and you know , sometimes both And the book readers were very invested .

I forget it was like this one plot line And you never knew if it was going to show up in the show , and the show owners definitely fucked with people like , oh yeah , we kind of hinted at it . And so , like I , at the end of this episode I'm like , oh , the poor Ted Beckett truthers Like you know what I mean , which is like I have .

It's their big moment . They're standing face to face .

Speaker 3

They flip sides .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 3

Yeah , which I thought was very interesting . Yes , that they had they flip sides .

Speaker 2

Yes , what is what's Ted's bomb Coach ? what's he ?

Speaker 3

gonna say I mean I , i . I believe he is going to say he is going back to Kansas . Yeah , that's what I believe . I believe they will win the whole fucking thing as promised , and he will do what so few get to do . He will now do for the second time in a row He will take everyone to the mountaintop and then say gotta go .

Speaker 2

Walk off home run .

Speaker 3

Yep , that's what I think . I feel like they've teed it up so beautifully that , yes , you could cross me there . You could definitely be like head fake me here , and then next week it's no , he's staying and whatever . But it almost feels too perfect , like if he , because I kept thinking will .

Will Michelle bring Henry this way , like this time it's her turn , it's her turn to make it right And to to . But then they'd win the whole fucking thing and he'd get his family . And I think the show has been beautifully ruthless in saying no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no . When one's up , the other one's going to be down .

You can't have it all at the same time .

Speaker 2

Right . Yes , you pointed that out many times and you've never been wrong about it .

Speaker 3

So I think that's where it's going And I but I think so far beautifully done .

Ted Lasso Character Development Discussion

I thought that episode was . I thought it was amazing . I was like I could go scene by scene And then you know you're like , oh , which scene is that Which ? I mean , which scene didn't come to fuck around , they are on it . I mean , that walk was the exact walk he took after the Trent Krimm story dropped .

Speaker 2

Yes , yes .

Speaker 3

Including that woman at the store who was like you're sure you're all right And now she's all good luck today . Like she's like . She's like his best friend And he's unchanged Right . Like he's changed , but like in terms of how he deals with people . That's how you always dealt with them When they were being shitty to them .

That's how he dealt with them When they're being super nice , because oh , he's great , he's willing to slap your high five . But he's the same guy in an essential way , you know .

Speaker 2

Yes , yeah .

Speaker 3

Great , i really liked that . And then , yeah , when he came back and said , mom , i thought this episode was going to bring us Jamie's mom because it was Man City And I thought but I did not see . You know , i never read anything or look at anything ahead of time , so I didn't think , i didn't think , i didn't know that it was going to be Ted's mom .

Speaker 2

You can't read right , Is that quite ?

Speaker 3

That's mostly part of it . It takes me quite sometimes At Yale .

Speaker 2

Reading wasn't a thing at Yale . Really weird .

Speaker 3

A lot of drawing pictures , you know . But you and boss were on it . You know that that was . You know that's where it was headed And yeah , she was perfect . Oh my God , i was like this is great . I bet the . I bet . What the writers did literally was just write Ted dialogue and it would just have it come out of her mouth .

Speaker 2

I mean when that's that was so funny . We'll get to that as we zip through this , but the moment when Rebecca realizes like she's like oh my God you're so funny . Like a bad joke about a bodyguard . She's like wait what ?

Speaker 3

There it is , Yeah , Yeah She's like oh , that was a , she saw that real quick . When she says , she comes out , she's .

Speaker 2

I you have met . You know , i can't believe the person who we got to go . We'll go in order , but she's like oh , i've met one of the nicest people ever . I was like there's no Ted Bekah .

Speaker 3

People Like you don't say that , no , you don't say that about some guy , you about it .

Speaker 2

Charming , very nice person You're a real sweetie pie She wants to get in his pants .

Speaker 3

So hard . Yeah , I think I feel bad . I know a lot of people were .

Speaker 2

I was not rooting for him . I said it was not my thing .

Speaker 3

Yeah . But , I wasn't rooting for it . I thought , if they did it I guess that was , that was in my my 60s VW van you know character because I sort of felt like I I have so enjoyed this that I'm sure that if you put them together you will make me ever very least smile and go .

Speaker 2

I get it . Oh yeah , now they would have . They would have had they chosen . Listen , who knows , maybe they will in the final episode .

Speaker 3

But that was me talking about headfakes , Yeah sure Doesn't feel like it .

Speaker 2

but I was thinking so much of your personal life . your defining characteristic has been barely contained rage And right . And for you to now become a guy who's like a flower child , he's like Hey man , he's so mental .

If we had gone back to Flatbush right half century ago and said , hey , little man this is where it is super when you're 50 , you are gonna you're going to cry , you got mail You'd be like it's so crazy . It's so crazy . I really love it . I love it . It's . It's it mirrors that Jamie journey .

You know , you come up in a place where you got to be a certain way and then it's just amazing , just amazing .

Speaker 3

Jamie for me , because I kept saying he is the poster child . But I thought I had seen , i mean , what they did for me , what they did brilliantly and we'll you know , we'll get to the specifics but I thought we had reached the crescendo . I thought we had reached the top of the crescendo for Jamie when he went to the board , so I'd kind of like relaxed .

And then they like you know what I mean Like I feel like I kind of dropped my guard a little bit on the JB front and then they were like boom . I mean yeah , wow , yeah , i , i , i , i had , i had chills when he was walking off the field at me and said yeah , i had , i was balling .

Speaker 2

I was balling . I was like whoa , whoa , whoa , i just let it all come out . I felt relieved I felt . I was proud of him , you know yeah , yeah , that's how I felt too . Yeah , but they were , they were . they were ripping him to shreds , like they were . like you know , pep was like listen , make him , make him pay . I'll never forget .

We talked about this too , and you appreciate this because you're a defensive minded person and I'm an offensive minded person And it was that first Patriots Super Bowl years ago when they played the Rams the greatest show on turf .

Speaker 3

Yes .

Speaker 2

They said there's too many . Bill Belichick takes away one player He can take away your best player , whoever that is , but they had Kurt Warner , tori Holt , isaac Bruce . Marshall Falk coming out of the back .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Mark , Hall of Famers everywhere . Kurt Warner slinging it like no one had ever slung it Right The greatest show on turf .

Speaker 3

And what happened was I thought Keem was my dude on there .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I was like just an absolute human rocket . Right Who you got . Okay , fine , take one away , we have this other guy Right . And what they did was they made poor Marshall Falk . any time he touched that ball , they annihilated it . They hit him so hard It was like a textbook murder every time .

Speaker 1

And then , after a while , you're like yeah , maybe throw it to someone else .

Speaker 2

I don't you know what I mean . It's just this crazy .

Speaker 3

I don't want the ball . Yeah , no , no .

Speaker 2

And so that's how this pepper's like listen . James got to pay . I know he's their best player . He is clearly the conductor of this orchestra .

Speaker 1

Make him earn every pass Yeah .

Speaker 3

That's it .

Speaker 2

That's it Go stick on him .

Speaker 3

Yep , and it could have worked . It was awfully close to like I think he did what he had to do and I get you know . but it I felt like during that game I felt like , oh God , like he's not gonna , he's not gonna make some mistake , that's gonna be like . I was like oh boy , oh boy . I was I did feel a little . Yeah , I was a little tense .

I was a little tense before the injury , actually , kind of Or no , like I mean before he came back from the injury , So like as he was limping onto the field , like before he went down the second time , I was like , oh boy , oh , boy , there's a . you know that sometimes it's selfish to stay on . Sometimes it's selfish to come off .

Speaker 2

Yes , Yes , exactly right , exactly right Either times where you should actually come off . You know that thing where if you work in a certain industry , you can see all the strings and all the wires behind the seat . You know , sometimes for people who've written for television , for film , you watch a movie and you can't unsee certain .

You're like why edit that way or why really you're gonna go with that angle . You know , like whatever , and I think we've both done a pretty good job of being able to unplug . I know that I had like a Roy Kent remember that laugh he did . That was like Ernie .

I was nearly like when I saw Jamie get start kind of whining in the beginning , like he's like what , what the hell , are you sitting on the ground with his arms open ? I started I was not like into , i was like laughing . I'm like I get it .

Yep , this is the , this is the meet cute where the two people don't get along in the beginning so that you have room to make him change over the course of the game . So I was like with it right away And , yeah , it was like he was doing everything wrong . to start , his head wasn't there .

you know , complaining on the field , that's the way to turn the entire fan in , even your fan base , against you .

Speaker 3

So , yeah , no , that was and also to encourage the strategy . Oh yeah , you start complaining , It's game over .

Speaker 2

I'm sure .

Speaker 3

I'm gonna tell you about the time that my coach had me boxing one night . kid , i'm in basketball .

Speaker 2

I don't know . No , no , tell me .

Speaker 3

Yeah , i think I was . Yeah , it was my freshman year And so this kid had lit us up . So he was like you're , you're , we're gonna box on one and you're gonna play this kid . And , oh my God , like when it was the opening tip , i walked over to their huddle .

So when they broke their huddle and we were walking to the middle of court , i was like we gonna spend a lot of time together today And then , like the whole time , i was just messing with them Timeouts , timeouts . I would walk them back to his bench .

I'd be right back to pick you up And by , like the middle of the second quarter he was , he was complaining to his coach . Yeah , i got all in his head . I was like man , oh my God . I was like this is close . I mean , this is closer than close . I'm usually not this close to anybody . This is really interesting .

He'd be like and I was just , i was just talking .

Speaker 2

Oh , my God .

Speaker 3

Yeah right , but yeah , his , his coach had to take him out . He was so upset He's getting so upset on the court There's his coach had to take him out the game . So so when they were doing that , i was like , okay , jamie , keep your head , keep your head . But he did .

Speaker 2

Wow , wow , yeah , you drive me nuts too . 30 motherfucking years of this .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's enough .

Speaker 2

I don't get this close . That's , that's . I don't have that gear , i don't know . No , no , no , no , no , no , no . Wait , maybe actually in hockey . Yeah , i would do a little chippy in hockey , yeah .

Speaker 3

Oh really .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , yeah . But just like to draw penalties and stuff like that I would draw . I would draw a lot of penalties . I would get a lot of people punching me . I'm not surprised anybody .

Speaker 3

You know what I mean Like that's funny You know , like the guy was like yeah , i was , like I was a guy already . I don't think I'm a good enough talker to like whatever in the moment .

Speaker 2

But yeah , there would definitely be like whistle , blow someone , be in my face And I just like what . You got something to say Bam , they hit me . Okay , there you go . There it is . There's a power play , we'll take it , yeah . so that might be a little bit of a . sometimes when you hear me mess up , it could just be the concussions talking .

Speaker 3

So that's really funny . So so I will . We will bring the rapid right after this , But don't you ? you said chippy , And I feel like you had a hockey story that you killed me with at one point with that was based on that quality .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , It wasn't the one that was a . I was playing for this traveling team . I used to get recruited because a real good goal scorer , but I'm short .

Speaker 3

Okay .

Speaker 2

And , and my name's Thor , And so I would get I would get , i would get I was they called a ringer . I don't know if like that's a term . You , you know the term ringer like yeah , i don't know if that's a common term . Whatever they would say like , oh , we're going to bring in a ringer , and so there was all these tracks . It's very different now .

The rules are different , but back then it was like the Wild West you could bring in whoever the fuck you want to grab whatever . So they would be , like you know , be all these teams looking for goal scores And I would travel anywhere to play love hockey Oh my God , i love hockey so much .

And so they'd be like Oh , we got this ringer coming in named Thor And I'm , like you know , three and a half feet tall .

Speaker 3

They're expecting somebody like blonde blocks , and yeah , they're like it was .

Speaker 2

So every time I walked in I'm like Hey , i'm Thor . They're like Is this a joke ? Are you fucking like ?

Speaker 3

all right , buddy , send Thor in here . We're going to get ready .

Speaker 2

Seriously And so yeah , but I would , i would definitely get you know .

Hockey Game and TV Show Analysis

It was like a hustle player , wasn't necessarily like a whatever , and it was playing this one big , big tournament , championship game . Team was better than us . Their captain was I was a first , first line center and they were first line center was their captain , And so we were having these great face offs And he was he was excellent , but a jerk .

He was a jerk , he was a great player but a jerk . Like a real dick , like a dick . You know what I mean , Yeah everything about him , said dick , he would yell at his other , you know , like yell at his own teammate . He's that kind of guy , he's like the kind of guy shows . Okay yeah , his dad was in the stands .

I remember his dad had like a flat top with a rat tail in the back . you know that's like his dad had .

Speaker 3

You know what that is .

Speaker 2

A rat tail that little , yeah , like the little brain kind of down the back Like a dad on tuxedo And I was like you know what , like anyway , third period , all tied up , and he was he had been just hacking at me all day Butt ends , which are totally illegal .

Like you can really hurt some of the butt end is when you use the back end of your stick not the , not the blade part , but the little slide your hand up , you can , like no one's looking you , hit somebody in the kidney or neck . Ouch , yeah , man , it's no joke .

Anyway , so we were going into the corner and full speed , both of us going into defense my zone , they dumped it in me and him are just racing into the corner to get it And I don't know how I did it , but I I got between him and the boards and I locked him up And then I picked him up and dropped him on top of me And it looked like he had taken

me down , like completely , like he had grabbed me and whatever . And they were like , oh , like , stopped everything . He's screaming , pulls his helmet off , smash it .

You know like ends up getting that double , double minor , like it's a minor plus four , so four minutes , and that's where I drew it back to the defenseman , like right on that plate , drew it like , won the face off back to the point and he slap , slap shot right in the top corner .

Speaker 1

And that was it Like so yes , that was not but that was very unfair , but that guy had it coming Right Right .

Speaker 3

I love too that . Probably because he was that guy , there was no way anybody was going to suspect for a second that he hadn't actually done it .

Speaker 2

Yes , yeah , no , no there was .

Speaker 3

No , you don't mean .

Speaker 2

It's like why would you do that ? Do control yourself , And I'm like yeah , man why , I can't believe you did that .

Speaker 3

Maybe I did do it . Did I do it ? I hope you still think so I did it . I'm sorry I did that .

Speaker 2

You're like wait what ? It's no different than than James , like when you say getting in that guy's head . but I guess , like right , i'm looking at you doing it and thinking , oh , you did it , like with words , like words The guy used to do it and that . Oh my God , he was so bad . It was a Vikings player , the Minnesota Vikings , john .

Speaker 3

Oh , the difference It was . it was a Randall , john Randall .

Speaker 2

Yes , john Randall , that's it . Yeah , yeah , who was like a master of ?

Speaker 3

yeah , he was a . he was . yeah , that was crazy . Like the name would make up anybody near him . You just be like , oh my God , he is legitimately insane . Right , it was it .

Speaker 2

I was like , wow , like yeah , i don't have , i don't have . Yeah , well , so yes , your , your version is talking , my version is , i guess , just like faking massive injuries . But but let's , are you ready to pick this up , coach ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , let's do it , let's do it .

Speaker 2

All right , so we have Ted walking through Richmond . You said carbon copy the story . The pet after the panic attacks . We still get the lanker guy , all these little beats .

Speaker 3

And now the joke really is between them . Like the joke , you know , is like oh , which you know what , what streak , like that's it . Now they're good . He flips them off and they're good , it's great .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and I can't . You know like it's , it's , they're doing this thing , that is so . God , it's hanging the Hockney , backup It's . You feel like you're cared for somehow . I don't know why . That , at least for me , i'm like . You respect your audience . You respect our intelligence . We know the Hockney came down Now . We know the Hockney went back up .

We know the wanker guy , how he was in the beginning . We know I was like a girl ran by in the scene and I was like , was that Shannon ? Was that supposed to be Shannon ? Clearly was not Shannon , no , but I was like I , was that supposed to be ?

you know they're trying to take every tiny little thread and tie it back up And , for my money , whenever people there's this , this negativity , when they're like , oh , an actor is taking over the show , like you know what , I mean , yeah , i feel like I almost wish , i almost wish that hadn't come out , that people would have watched it not knowing that fact .

Speaker 3

I mean I wonder if the reactions would have been the same .

Speaker 2

Yeah , oh , it's a longer episodes because an actor you know , it's not not Bill Lawrence being , you know , having tight episodes or whatever . It's such a demeaning oh , i'm so an actor , i'm sorry , oh right Pardon me . I'm a person who does this profession . I'm like okay , this was a . You know ?

people say like oh , you have fuck you money or that's a fuck you house . This was a fuck you episode .

Speaker 1

This was like yeah , let's see what the actor can do here , so we have a .

Speaker 3

I mean , there was some quality acting Right , yeah .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so yes , we got the walkthrough , everything's good . And then mom and she says hey , teddy , teddy and Teddy , so that's great .

Speaker 3

right there , by the way , she's sitting where Beard was sitting when Ted got there .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's where beard was sitting .

Speaker 3

That's where beard went Yeah when he said I guess you well , no , i'm saying on that morning when , with the story from Trent , he said you heard , i guess you know what that's all about , right , and he said no , and then he walks away and you see he has a newspaper in his back pocket . He knew , but he knew that Ted needs to talk about it .

Speaker 2

Wasn't that also the bench where , when Henry and Michelle drove away , yeah , beard was waiting .

Speaker 1

Yeah , that bench is important , i think .

Speaker 2

Bossis sat on that bench .

Speaker 3

I think She definitely visited , that That might be right . Yes , yes , i feel like that's right , she's definitely the most diehard Lasso fan here in the team . I'm missing , boss , but come on , here we go .

Speaker 2

Oh yeah , no , not me . So we get to open credits and heaven knows , i tried and all of a sudden , boom coach , where are we ?

Speaker 3

Taste of Athens . And we walk with Jade and guess who's working as a waiter at Taste of Athens . But good old Nathan .

Speaker 2

Good old Captain Gray Brows .

Evolution of Characters in Ted Lasso

I've never seen Grayer eyebrows in my life .

Speaker 1

That was like listen .

Speaker 2

I'm not going to mock very much about this episode because I adored it , but those eyebrows were like when you first look you ever I don't know . Were you the theater , were you a theater kid ?

Speaker 3

Not really , not really .

Speaker 2

Not really . I was because I'm inauthentic and I wanted to be other people .

But when you first learned to use makeup , when you're like in sixth grade , right like you just take these cans of spray paint and you just hammer it in your hair , you know like , yeah , like whoa , whoa , whoa back off , and it's like somebody just jacked up his eyebrows so hard with that gray gray marker . But yeah , he's working in Taste of Athens .

Why do we put chairs on the table ? I don't think the cleaning crew whatever , there's no cleaning crew He says why do we put the chairs on the tables ? And what does Jade say ?

Speaker 3

The patriarchy , and you know I've yeah , so that mentioned seemed like , yep , we're wrapping things up here , folks .

Speaker 2

Yes , and Jade's funny , see , we didn't know this . Later on she says I don't listen , this is the fast , this is the fast . You know we're zipping through this , so I don't have every one . But when Nate's out back , she's up front .

Colin Isaac and Will come in and they say you know , hey , we want to look for a Nathan Shelley And and she's like well , first she says can you wait , like not here or something .

Speaker 3

Yeah , she said we don't for half an hour and we need to go wait , not here . Wow , okay , damn .

Speaker 2

I wish we kind of had a line on this type of like , whatever her personality was . That dry sort of . This is an interesting choice , because Colin leading the pack wasn't Isaac Isaac's the captain , but Colin was leading And Colin was the one that we always bark about .

I think it's a choice , because everybody , you know , we went through the , the reactions to the poll , the questionnaire . So many people were like , yeah , i know they're going to make Nate have a redemption art , but like he has not done the work , he has not whatever Part of it was . I was thinking this was intentional once .

See , because the two players and then the kit man , and for my money . I figured Will , went to the team and said you guys look what you did , yeah , from wonder kid not yeah , whatever .

Speaker 3

Yeah , that's pretty significant .

Speaker 2

Right , that has to be what they were doing . That's the , that's the mechanisms , that's why ?

Speaker 3

how else do you launch that conversation ? I mean , how , like ? why would anybody ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , but that's why they should will being here in this thing Like it was like , okay , he's , you know , he's on board and he's told everyone . And this saves us from having the scene of you know , redemption with Colin . It just goes okay , whatever , whatever , whatever .

Speaker 1

Mathematics , colin had to do to forgive Nate .

Speaker 2

He's done because he's asking him back . I thought that was pretty clever actually . Also , i it's not .

Speaker 3

I guess this isn't mine the call , but I wondered his , his being able to be his full self now Does he feel less like a cheap painting ? So what was said to him feels different to You know what I mean .

Speaker 2

Yeah , actually right , Yeah , because he was playing not as well as he could , wasn't really ? playing potential that that may have resonated more or felt like it rang true , Whereas now something like that is like whatever man , i'm like a good , i'm a really good player .

Speaker 3

I'm on the Wales national team . I just , I just put , I just put Man City down one nil So how you like me now , that was hot .

Speaker 2

Well , that hasn't happened yet . coach , i love your time travel . No , it's good . No , that's good , it's good , but he will . he did win Man of the Match for that one one of the day . the time after he came out to the team , remember , he got Man of the Match and he's been playing unbelievably well .

There's a really nice moment here where Nate says you know , i like working here . He says I like spending time with my girlfriend . He turns around and Jad's gone and he looks up And you know what that is .

Speaker 3

No .

Speaker 2

Okay , you're gonna love that . You're gonna love this connection . Okay , When he said that to Colin , Beard showed up in his office sitting in his chair and he's like it was weird . What you said to Colin was personal , It was weird and whatever .

Now , like you're now we're good , like beat it And he leaves , and he turns around and goes wait , this is my office .

Speaker 1

Beard is gone and he looks around , and then he looks up .

Speaker 3

You're right . Wow , that's nice coach , nice .

Speaker 2

Remember that , yeah , yeah , and I was like , yeah , i mean , you're right , it's exactly , that's a direct line to this exact thing .

Speaker 3

To this moment . Yeah , to this moment . That's great . Yeah , i liked . I liked that they thought in a way in the regular world that we're aware of , this is true that no way a guy was just at West Ham and within you know weeks he's a waiter . like something went horrendously wrong .

Like , although they made a joke of it , i'm glad they actually did address that . People would definitely be like it's either gambling or drugs . I'd be like what the fuck ? Like ?

Speaker 2

what do you mean ? he's a waiter Right , yeah .

Speaker 3

You know . So I appreciated that they went there And also that Isaac agreed with Anastasia and he was like because this shit is sad , that made me laugh .

Speaker 2

That is true , That is true . So the team talked and they want him back at Richmond . And you wrote here a team doesn't know . it's true crime . What's this true crime ?

Speaker 3

I don't think the team know they know about the sign . They don't know about Trent . They don't know , they don't know . Remember they said . They said when we find out who did that I believe it was Isaac who said it as a matter of fact , we're gonna find out who did it and we're gonna fuck them up . That was Isaac's last words on this topic .

So I think the hug from Beard means your secret will be safe , just as you would have never , no one would have ever known that Beard did time , because they never were gonna hear it from Ted . But if the team ever found that out , there'd be some more conversations of yeah , Maybe it'll happen next time , 10 o'clock Monday .

Speaker 2

We'll find out , you'll see So Nate says no , thank you , because he finds that Ted hasn't been involved in it . I was like wow , imagine the team talking Hey guys , guys listen .

Speaker 3

We're gonna do this thing . Well it's like guys .

Speaker 2

I wanna show you what happened . Nate came into it here . He was bit in this room and someone would be like , oh , he must miss it . You know what I mean . Like someone's like . Why would he do that ? Yeah ?

Speaker 3

like they really thought about it . Right And then because yeah , they would have felt that .

Speaker 2

Well , the team is like different . now It's a different you know what I ? mean You think about the team Nate left ? That's not this team . Now This team has evolved .

Speaker 3

Actually , yeah , you're right . Yeah , because I'm thinking of it as like , well , he left this , but he didn't leave this . No , He left , yeah , he left the end of act two , I mean act the end of season two , Basically act two . But yeah , Yeah , I mean yeah , yeah , But yeah , see you now .

But you know what I'm saying And so , yeah , I think that , yeah , you're right .

Speaker 2

These are not the droids you're looking for , I mean he is in a very , very different dynamic in that locker room , in the coach's room , In the owner's suite . I mean you look all the way around and people have evolved and they have grown thanks to an innumerable amount of small interactions to build culture .

Speaker 3

It's gonna work . Well , we will explore why I say this when we do the deep dive , but I believe that actually , in storytelling terms , ted is the antagonist And that's why everybody around him changes , because that is actually what he is in people's lives .

He's an antagonist And he challenged , but what he challenges you to do is to become the best version of yourself . That's how he antagonizes you . Right , he's a change agent He , yeah , yeah .

Speaker 2

He's well he challenges you to challenge your own personal status quo .

Speaker 3

Yep , and it's pretty , i mean . So , yeah , wherever he goes , when he goes back to Kansas , somebody's gonna hand him some team . Maybe there'll be a bowling team , it won't matter , they'll be knocking down 300s before you know it .

Speaker 2

I was talking with producer the other day trying to get me to write like he's , like you do not understand how desperate the industry is for the next Ted Lasso . They are dying dying for you know what I mean .

Speaker 3

And he's like you got this . You're like what ?

Speaker 2

do you have in your pocket . And I was laughing because like , yeah , this one was a , this was a thunder clap . And we kept saying , oh , let's , let's see if they stick the landing . And we're one episode away and it looks pretty damn stuck .

Speaker 3

Yeah , yeah , Like this is this feels like when , like , like right , when the gymnast lands like they haven't officially stuck it yet .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , yeah right .

Speaker 3

They might take a step , but you're like they haven't thrown their arms up yet .

Speaker 1

Yeah , it looks good .

Speaker 2

Oh , the arms are up .

Speaker 3

Man next week is that's what we're waiting for The next week . We're waiting for the arms to go For me . I thought I mean huge payoffs . You know you talk about trying . Oh shit , sorry , i started . No , no , no , no , no , no , i love it .

Speaker 2

I love it Next week is the is the Kerry's Strugg episode where she just sticks it . Oh yeah , all right , so we got . we got them . This is really cute this moment . Isaac is such a knucklehead 75 kebabs , he doesn't know which kind . Nate immediately suggests 25 of each Huge . I love when Isaac smiles .

It is , it's like such a different when he's , when he's brow is furrowed and he's he's like a . He's like a , I don't know . It looks fierce or angry , right , And then , in a flash of a second , lights up the room .

Speaker 3

Yeah , beautiful , what a beautiful man . And I love they call them Nate the Great . Yes , nate the Great . I was like didn't ? I kind of felt like , oh , they're getting me And I said they weren't going to get me . But when he called them Nate the Great , i was kind of like oh , I don't want to like them . Oh my God , like it was .

Speaker 2

Yeah , it was hard , it was hard , it was very , very clever , the little landmines they put in this episode . This is , this is all . Joe Kelly .

I've talked about the great Joe Kelly and Ted Lasso's secret weapon , unheard of , unsung , silent ninja warrior right And and this is the little beats they put in here to take people like you and me who weren't necessarily ready to , to have Nate back in our lives . And he says yeah , no , i did . Yeah , wonder kid . I did say wonder kid .

He said at the table later with Jade at a moment he said yeah , you know a lot of it's my fault And he's like well , it was actually all my fault , like yeah , yeah , i know , damn you , that's a counter . Damn you , god damn it . Okay , come on back , shit .

Speaker 3

The 60 page note . I mean anyway , go , keep going , keep going , all right , yes , okay .

Speaker 2

All right , so here we go . 25 , eight . Nate's a great . We'll go to Ted's flat . Yeah , mom is looking around pretty sparse . He is so stressed out .

Speaker 3

Ted is just like man , he's taking deep breaths . Oh my God , he's doing breathing exercises .

Speaker 2

I was like oh my God , i'm like she's dying right . Why is she there ? She's got a , she's got some other .

Speaker 3

I know She's got some huge thing to drop on .

Speaker 2

Is everything okay , mom ? No , everything's fine . Yeah , no , how long have you been here ? I've been here a week , a week . Where are you staying In a hostel ? So much sex coach , not no , that's what one of my favorite things .

Speaker 3

Everybody wants to hear their mother say Yeah , yeah , here's a sentence I would love to hear you say mom , can you read this for me ? So much sex ? No , not me , the Australians .

Speaker 2

No , no , no . The part of it you really want to hear is that it wasn't her , like just the verification . Yeah , no , no , i wasn't having that much sex with her Actually . No , like , oh shit . It wasn't all me , It's a lot . It's a lot .

Ted Lasso's Family Relationships

I was thinking like he doesn't like just not in touch with his mom that much , or whatever . Like not not like really interesting , Like that . she just shows up there . He is clearly the dynamic of the relationship is stressful to him . It's not comforting , By the way , for what it's worth . this is my mom .

Speaker 1

My mom and daddy have a lot in common .

Speaker 2

So , like I will talk about my childhood and you will shudder , You'll go oh my God , But if we're out , if I'm Ted Lasso , it doesn't matter If I'm me and my mom walks into a room . Everybody loves me , Everybody . She's a firecracker , big personality .

Speaker 3

Oh , yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah , she had me cracking up , of course .

Speaker 2

Seriously , I don't know what I meant . I was like oh yeah , The moment that is 100% my thing is we'll get to it later but when everybody's around her in the locker room , she's like Queen B holding court And Ted's like I got to run a goddamn football team , Like he yells , like you never hear Ted .

I'm like that is me , That's me , Holy shit , That's like exactly my You're reacting , oh my . God , it's so crazy . Yeah , even like it was very interesting to watch this , but anyway , it's , bring your mom to work day . He offers for her to tag , tag along . You know she she doesn't want to bother .

Speaker 3

Yeah , this , this , this was interesting . Like we talk about niceness and and and , niceness versus kindness and and sort of like , even the lasso way . you know , watch this thing . that was much more surface even though it had some depth to it , not anything like where we are now .

I mean , we talk about the team being different , but Ted's kind of different too , right , and you see the difference here , I feel like the like . I think they would have been a lot more similar in season one In terms of like , fundamentally because I think he was still operating .

So I think when she started singing her little song , he might have sung along or , if not sung along , certainly not been so bothered by it . I feel like a lot of his strain . Yes , she showed up and that's weird and stressful , but I think also it was Since I was around you last .

I've become incapable of just being around you and not having this conversation that we were supposed to have . That's the way I took it . Ok , yeah , yeah , yeah , Right , right , so now she's there , like at some point we're going to talk about the fact that this catastrophic thing happened . I called you drinking a beer .

You came home and then we acted like everything was good , what ? And I think he knew he was going to have to . He was going to have to do it . He's grown too much to not have the conversation , but it was going to be tough .

Speaker 2

So this , the specter of this looming sort of mandatory responsibility , accompanied her visit . For you , you're saying , like this was just the gorilla in the room And yeah , I think so . OK , OK .

Speaker 3

I mean , as I look at it , but yeah , But I mean in this moment , though , it is clear that he is , He's wound up . I mean , arguably he's as wound up as he is when he has the anxiety attacks . It's just a different emotion or a different feeling , So it's not coming out that way . But I mean he is undone , He is .

I mean like you talked about him screaming in the locker room like what the hell is that ? Right , He was so outside himself . Yeah , I was like what ?

Speaker 2

There's no such thing as a small interaction , and yet he will leave the interaction to go play fake pinball . I mean , when have you seen him do that ? I mean , it's he . You know what ? This is weird . This is interesting , ok . Ok , we're getting to something because you can . Oh good , you know what you're going to say . God , you take it .

Speaker 3

I think so No , no , no , no , do it , do it .

Speaker 2

Do it Because you can do it , you , you , you build a persona . And in my case , you know , i was less than excited by the family that I was grew up with and you know sort of like the family . I didn't have to . You know you don't get to choose . This is your family .

Speaker 1

Right . And so I said you know what ?

Speaker 2

I'm going to make a family of my friends And then I accumulated , i think , some of the best people in the world And I got to be . They allowed me . You and my other friends allow me to be the person that I want to be . But your mom sees you for the person that you were when you were a little kid , before you had to figure it out .

She saw you and you made mistakes . She saw you when you were figuring things out And she also has an idea of who you are , or who she wanted you to be , and sometimes that those two are very conflicted .

Speaker 3

So I don't know , at least in my situation it is for sure . Yeah yeah . Yeah , and and , and you wonder . Here I mean Although I mean the way , her way of being she probably , i would think she probably didn't express much one way or another . Really , you know what I mean ? Just a lot of like You're happy , isn't that great ? Isn't everything great ?

Like if he was like I got fired , like I'm sure on some level , that would be great . Everything's great , and I think that's that's what I get from the diet .

Speaker 2

She also has an element of like , you know , like she's like an unreliable narrator . You know she'll tell a story and it's like wrong .

Speaker 3

But now the yes , I mean , it bothers me to get out of him because he's like no , that's not . Well , here's something I think is interesting about that trait . See , now you see I can't help . Well , i'm going to do it quick . But The bombshell he received Yeah , right , yes , your son misses you .

To hear that message in a certain way could make you think , oh , my God , my son feels I abandoned him . I got to go home , i got to leave now , and maybe your son misses you . Of course your son misses you , but your son is proud that you're the gaffer at AFC Richmond and he enjoys coming to London for six weeks . And so , yeah , it sucks .

Everybody's in a loop together . You know what I mean . Like I wouldn't be so sure , even if he does end up going home , i wouldn't be so sure that Dottie delivered this like pure piece of capital T truth To to Ted and that's all there is . Oh , we're going to have to deep dive that .

Speaker 2

OK , well , this is interesting . That's a , that'll be a . We'll have to read that in the scene and that's we'll . We'll get You know what I mean . Yeah , yeah , i know , what you're saying . Yeah , yes , because she's an unreliable narrative , right Like and they go out of their way multiple .

Speaker 3

I mean , didn't they say He was going to be the drummer and Cold player ? Yeah , and then like , oh , he jams the .

Speaker 2

Bruce Springsteen . He's like . no , that was Courtney Cox in the video , Like that .

Speaker 3

I remember that video with her dancing with Bruce . Yes , that's very common band at like the local steakhouse .

Speaker 2

You know like she's Yeah some part of it Right . It's interesting All right , we'll talk about it when we get there .

Speaker 1

Yeah , then we're at the press conference now Sam Roy and Jamie Roy is just taking over press conference .

Speaker 2

That's his , that's his job now , and all comfortable in the middle holding court .

Speaker 3

I'm like , oh OK , yeah right , sam who the nicest person in ?

Speaker 2

the world . He says is there a question ? I'm like oh you slick motherfucker , like you're a pro now , Right , you didn't get baited into anything , is it ? Look at the three of them too .

Speaker 3

Yeah , i mean , if you want to talk about three Ted Lasso impacted characters Goldfish Captain yeah , extra pass , i mean , yeah . So I mean , this is this is like you know . They might as well be up there to like promote the lasso way .

Speaker 2

It's funny because we say , oh , i dream is the poster , but they all are and yeah , and so is Danny and so is right . You know , listen , we're going to get to Van Damme . I mean , holy mother of Christ , the mask to talk about earning it , jesus Christ , but , but wait , but how good is this ?

Speaker 3

because he was zero . He was zero . But then Van Damme , and they say the mask of Van Damme , but his original name was zero , so it'd been the mask of Zorro . Yes , so they really like he , but he's now it because he like , mixed this all together and chose these identities Like now he's this new thing .

I was like yes , oh , my God , danny did my favor once he gets the mask on , he's Samson . He's a new guy .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's amazing .

Speaker 3

He's a new guy .

Speaker 2

I have to wear this or I would

Discussion of Ted Lasso Episode 8

die . And Danny laughs . Danny , all right , 15 wins instead of . Is this a fucking joke ? What is ? what is ? what do they say ?

Speaker 3

Am I dreaming ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , am I dreaming ? 15 wins .

Speaker 3

Wow , i mean , you talk about wow . Remember that first day they were out for blood Because it felt like They were explaining offside .

Speaker 2

Yeah , he couldn't even dream , am I ?

Speaker 3

dreaming Coach . he couldn't even . Yes , it's truly Water . He spit water across . He was so incompetent . It was awful . It was awful .

Speaker 2

Now we had a question for .

Speaker 3

Sam .

Speaker 2

He's gracious . Roy calls on better Trent , and then they talk about Jamie . Hey , how does it feel ?

Speaker 1

And Jamie , something's going on And I was like am I ready for this ?

Speaker 2

Like because I was so satisfied with where Jamie had got to , I was like , oh no , no , don't mess this up .

Speaker 3

Yeah , yeah , i was like yeah , don't make a new problem now Yeah , Jamie's good .

Speaker 2

OK , leave him alone . If I were in the writers room I would have flipped the table . God damn it . Can we have one nice thing ?

Speaker 3

No , but then Right , yeah , but yeah , but yeah . I thought that was fantastic . I laughed out loud when he said about that goal , the goal , that goal is alive . I was like what ? And then he says I apologize to everyone , especially the kids , i had to pause it . I laughed .

Speaker 2

It was so good , I was like what happened ?

Speaker 1

That goal is alive , try to assist .

Speaker 2

That happens That actually happens . You try to chip it in and then somehow it just goes in . And it's amazing . Yeah , that's like the thing Corner kicks you can curl them in , And it's not that hard . And you curl one in when you're trying to actually put it out by the panel , But you think people are like , oh my god , that was unbelievable .

Speaker 3

Yeah , yeah , totally I sighed over it , and then I , and so I put it right in that corner . That's what I did .

Speaker 2

Totally didn't shank it at all . Now we're over to Rebecca's office . We get biscuits , Mom does a bodyguard joke And she says once she says well-manicured mitts .

Speaker 3

Yeah , that was that , i think , was the construction that brought the light bulb up over Rebecca's head .

Speaker 2

Well-manicured mitts , i think was it . Oh , my her face was so good .

Speaker 3

Oh god she's so good , she's so good . My god , she was awesome in the scene too by the way Awesome . Like the energy was very post-ted , like there was pre-ted Rebecca and there's a post-ted Rebecca And this was post-ted .

She is totally charmed by this shit for real Yes , when she does the joke about when he was born he asked the doctor if he needed anything , she was truly tickled . That was not a polite like oh , this is the part where I laugh Like she laughed and looked at Ted like , oh , she's funny too .

Speaker 2

And Ted's response was amazing .

Speaker 1

And we'll have to go back .

Speaker 2

He's like well that's the kids don't have a baby , so I have empathy and can't speak Like I'm like what You are . so up your own ass right now , ted . It's amazing .

Speaker 3

Wouldn't it be a skinner ? I was like they're your jokes . I was like , oh my god , And he was totally out . He was totally out on it When she said the I call you Dottie , And she goes oh , if you want me to respond , And he looks at her like you're a lunatic . Well , you shut up , you lunatic I hate that I hate how you talk .

Speaker 2

You wrote the show notes . He's talking about how you talk . The show notes he wrote . Ted suddenly hates his own sense of humor . That's exactly how it is .

Speaker 3

It's so great ? Yeah , it was so great And couldn't you see , but it was . For me it was totally believable .

Like I've told you before that , one of the things for me about parenting is how , when my kids are being most like me is when I am closest to catching a case , when they're being like the part of me that is in them that comes shooting back at me . That's usually when I'm just like on 11 .

Speaker 2

And I just think there's something I don't know that term catch in a case . What does that mean ?

Speaker 3

Oh , like that I would do some violence , so then I would be in trouble with the law . But really it's like , because you know what I mean , it's the thing . It's that And it's so close to who you are And I remember joking at one point there's something about you that really annoys me , about me , that's fucking funny To your kids .

Speaker 1

That's pretty great .

Speaker 2

No , that's exactly right , and that's his look . I mean , ted Lasso does not look at anyone with the contempt and disdain that he looked at his own mother at when she made his . What exactly would I think ? I've heard him say that joke Like if you want to launch her . You know , like I'm sure he's . Yeah , rebecca offers to show her around .

She says I'd love to see the Sherlock Holmes Museum . What is that ? a callback to coach ?

Speaker 3

Abby Road . I'm like they are the same , the same human , the same misunderstanding of the same point . At this I was like , oh my God .

Speaker 2

It's like exactly . Fantastic , and also neither one of them skipped a beat when Rebecca's like oh yeah , he's like , oh great , like and she said oh , ok , yeah . OK , even better . And then , where are you from , suri ? Where are you from ? I'm like , oh , my God , now we go to the little time cut .

Tati's now holding court and let me go from just like OK , i'll give you a tour to she holding court , just holding everyone around her like Zava , no people have not been as this .

Speaker 3

Yes , since Zava left for the other . Oh my God , she has a Zava level impact on the lock . That's crazy . But it's also a tribute to Ted , right ? They're like wait , you're Ted's mother , like it's all , it's both . It's like she's awesome .

But it's also kind of everybody's like oh my God , you're Ted's mother , of course we would treat you amazing , so yeah it's great , it's great , great , great .

Speaker 2

This is the confluence of every point you , coach , have made throughout this whole podcast . Is that moment ? I'm just all coming to me right now . First of all , what was the general shape that they were sitting in ? It was sort of like No , i took what I looked like up top right .

Yeah , yeah , and they're all kind of like a rounder and like sort of a pyramid . No , and listen , i'm just saying this is what I saw . Maybe my eyes deceive me , but what made you fall in love with Ted Lasso was a couple of things . This is a lot of coach . I know exactly how you feel about these things .

We talk about the John Wooden pyramid And the top of it is technically what is it ?

Speaker 3

But before we change Competitive greatness , that's it Competitive .

Speaker 2

And then he said if I could do it again , it would be love And change the love . And what you always harp on is . The thing that made you fall in love with this show was when Ted was dancing with the Wichita Stas Shockers . How did his team feel ? They ?

Speaker 3

loved him . Loved him , I mean , oh , or you could feel it . I was like amazing .

Speaker 2

Dottie is a hayseed from EBF . You know what I mean . Right Like he's bumfuck , And if she was just walking through that room I don't think anyone would give her the time to . But she is Ted Lasso's mother And they love Ted Lasso . They love him every bit as much as the Wichita Stas Shockers did .

So that's the respect they give to the person that made him one of their favorite people he ever met in their life .

Speaker 3

Then we just sit and listen . I was just We just sit and listen .

Speaker 2

I was just blown away by the whole thing .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

That was great .

Speaker 1

Wow , i've got to go back and look at the configuration , because now I'm like no .

Speaker 2

It was pretty impressive . She was definitely up top , like the point of the spear . Yeah , yeah , ted and Rebecca are watching through the window in Ted's office . I will say there's a moment I wrote in the I don't even know what . Remember I was like blown away by the guy squeegeeing the window .

Yeah , i had that kind of reaction to Rebecca pulling the kebab meat off the skewer . I wrote Rebecca pulling kebab meat off the skewer where their teeth is basically sex . I was like what is that .

Speaker 1

It was so amazing .

Speaker 2

What's happening right now . I could watch this all day . I don't know why . What the hell is my kebab ? Kebabs Great , I'm like what ? Classic women eating street meat What is my ?

Speaker 3

thing , absolutely .

Speaker 2

But I was just like this is amazing , amazing Anyway they're talking about mothers . He's clearly got some consternation . Tries to bullshit her . She throws out Oklahoma again which I love . Yes , he says it's weird . She says sometimes the truth can ruin a perfectly good story And then she's got to go see a man about a horse .

Speaker 3

You know , i really liked that piece about a perfectly good story , especially because I think there's some pretty impressive storytelling going on here , i think , and sometimes There are pieces you leave out of a story even though you know that could happen .

You know , and I wonder if some of the fairy tale of this you know they were on the same Friday and these things that you could sort of scoff at individually , somehow the way this is written and created makes you say , right , because you were doing a thing , so it's okay here , right , yeah , yeah , that's you know .

I wonder about that because you know I could totally see some of the show having like two characters have something huge happen on the same exact day and me being like I'll never watch that again .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I mean Sense8 has some of that . What Like , or I mean yeah , there was definitely . I don't know I'm trying to think of other shows where they did it , but it was just didn't like , but also like . I don't think we harp on that very like . I know it was a plot point but it's sort of this mystic . Oh , I think that's a typical

Ted Lasso's Emotional Moments

thing . Where's Tish when we need our coach ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , i'm surprised we didn't see Tish again . I mean , i guess Tish did her job , so moving on . But I expected that after we went upside down that there was going to be another Tish visit .

Speaker 2

I'm expecting it next week . I don't think they're going to leave that on their time .

Speaker 3

This is true , it's so good , yeah , they're cleaning up a lot of stuff . Yeah .

Speaker 2

So yeah , she's got to see a man about a horse , which is a way you say , hey , I got to go to the bathroom , But she's like no , Ted , I'm buying a horse , I love that . Now we get a little thing about . Doddy talks about . You know he's like Ronnie Fouch , you know he was throwing gang , the only reason I got pulled over .

Well , she makes it sound like whatever his fault . He's like no , it's throwing gang signs at a cop car . And then I'll read you a little quote .

I have this right next to my desk because for a Secret Santa gift one year , producer Seth got my name and he sent me a like framed thing that says I learned two pretty big lessons in the rough and tumble playgrounds of Brook Ridge Elementary School . That's funny . One .

If little Ronnie Fouch offers you a candy bar , you immediately say no and you get the hell out of there because there's a good chance that little son of a gun has just pooped inside of a Butterfinger wrapper . I don't ever saw him do it , but a couple of people ate , it Turns out , and that was she's like . Did he ever tell you he ate ?

like he was one of the people .

Speaker 3

Yeah , turns out . I was like , wow , i mean , i certainly didn't see that story coming back .

Speaker 2

No , but remember , this whole season is about shit anyway , isn't it , coach ? Oh , you're right , amazing right . Come on , what show does this ? No show does this . Come on , man , it's unfair , it's so good . Nobody does this , nobody does it .

Trent then sits with Dottie and I love it because , listen , my reaction was so God , what a difference This is just as a viewer . I used to really mistrust Trent .

Speaker 1

I remember I used to be like what the ?

Speaker 2

fuck , is he up to ? Hello Dottie .

Speaker 3

In the old days I'd be like no danger , Will Robinson . Right , right , right , get it out of there .

Speaker 2

But I'm like , oh , that's good . I saw him sit and I'm like , oh yeah , good , this is going to make the story even better . I can't wait to read this when they put his book out after the season's over in real life . I'm going to read that . I'm sure they're going to .

Speaker 3

If they put it out .

Speaker 2

I'll read it .

Speaker 3

I'm going to read it in the audiobook , because if Trent does the audiobook , i'm there . Oh , james Lance , what a beautiful voice . That'd be amazing .

Speaker 2

She says Trent , your hair is fabulous right away .

Speaker 3

Yeah , amazing , i mean what ? I was pretty impressed that they We had the joke with full on QAnon , right , and then reminded of the joke , yes , and then we put it right that when you meet somebody's mom and obviously we've met Rebecca's mom , a lot going on there And to now meet Ted's mom and be like of course , You see how they got fucked up , yeah .

You see it , It was like , of course , And of course he had no way of having these discussions And of course he couldn't talk to Michelle about whatever it was she wanted to really talk about . Instead of having his you know what did she call it ? his positivity had become unbearable , or something like that Yes , yes , and what ? was that about ?

This is where he learned it .

Speaker 2

Oh my God , there was a really smart podcast host . What was his name ? He brought up the concept of emotional availability . Last episode , coach . Yes , yes , that's what this is .

Speaker 3

Yeah , you're right , it's completely unavailable to him .

Speaker 2

Right Out of love and out of protection and out of trying to figure out the best way to get through .

Speaker 3

What do you do ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , who knows the playbook for that ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , i don't think there is one .

Speaker 2

I'm very interested to find out what Boss thought about this because , as in the thank you , fuck you scene , that's we're going to get to . I think this is the resolution Boss was looking for , but we'll see She's an embittered . That's really funny .

Speaker 3

Very , very imaginable person And I like that . By the way , just to call it out , because you know my feelings about therapy , i am so glad that they've called out . He is still talking to Dr Sharon . Oh yeah , there's still work happening For me . That that's . I think that's very respectful of the actual process .

Speaker 2

Totally , totally , and it doesn't .

Speaker 3

It's not a magic trick .

Speaker 2

No , no . I think there's a beautiful line where I know everybody , sorry , adhd , we're jumping around all of it . We'd love this episode so much . But there's a beautiful line where he says I'm going to leave . My mom says , you know , she seems to be doing some . You know real work Yeah . I'm going to leave her out of this , and he's like God .

I can't wait to tell her What he's thinking would tell her Yeah . All this like oh man , like he's starting to even like , of course You know forecast that that next conversation , like Jesus Christ , wait till she , yeah , of course , of course , i mean yeah , now we get Zorro in the mask .

I really love the line where Yonma says it does make you look very stupid Wow .

Speaker 3

I mean damn .

Speaker 2

You got a . Hey , they look at Jamie for the deciding vote . You know what ? do you think , jamie ? I think safety is more important than trying to look cool . I'm going to be like , oh boy , time Boot room now . And then Doddy saying , hey , i think somebody's in trouble , or something like that . And do you remember what Trent says to Doddy right there ?

Speaker 3

Shouting is Roy's love language . Yeah , and yeah , there was part of me that was like , yeah , there's some .

Speaker 1

Roy in my game .

Speaker 3

Okay , that's fine . Oh , this is a question , but I got that a little bit more than .

Speaker 1

You scared the .

Speaker 2

Jesus , out of me yelling at your son in the past from the stands . I'm still , i'm still . I'm going to have to dress up in therapy . You know , coach yells in the past these children . Hi , he hurts me . I'm frightened of this man . Oh my god , now we're in the boot room and we know boot room is a is a place . Things happen , right .

I like that they scan for will on the way in , which is really funny . And as Roy is lowering the textbook , boom , right , what happens with Jamie .

Speaker 3

He just cries and it's like you know , roy's reaction is perfect Whoa .

Speaker 1

What is wrong ?

Speaker 2

Are you fucking dying or some shit ? I mean , that's like the . I mean that was great . This is good direction . because I was like I watched a few times and I was like , oh man , is this , is this the one thing Phil Dunster can't do ? Like , is this ? like a push ?

and I was like , oh no , no they want to call him to go above and beyond to mess up Roy's face . You know it has to feel like it is . Listen , i could see if someone didn't buy it because it was big . It was a big oh no , they definitely .

Speaker 3

Yeah , they were , yeah , they went for it .

Speaker 2

I was like , okay , actually kind of works for me , because I'm like he really is out of control . And yeah , it read like that It was really weird . It was just a weird . It would hit playing with Roy's face . I'm like this is such a mess and I kind of love it .

And then Jamie's just sobbing on him , will comes in and Roy goes , will yeah , you missed a good one , you missed a good one . Oh , god damn , so good , that's a quadruple callback .

Speaker 3

I mean yeah and also that , like he's a part of the family too , he's like yeah , sorry , buddy , if you had been in here . You know , something tells me he's going to get those fish bowls you know , i think after next week . Next week . that would be amazing . I'd be so excited Yeah .

Speaker 2

I mean , whether we see it or not , you just feel like he is really good for him too . When we started we just did not know will very much all this season . They've done a nice job And the poll everyone's like oh , i love the details of his life . He won the poll for the most interesting it's .

I thought bumper cash was a shoe in for that , but yeah , now we'll fantastic .

Speaker 3

Now we cut to .

Speaker 2

Ted's office . Yep , oh my god , coach , our new striker looks just like your mom . We get the whole thing about tooting . Hey , roy , i thought it mattered .

Speaker 3

By the way , that Ted missed that that was a joke because , remember , that's something between them , like when the humor doesn't fire correctly , that means Oh , yeah , yeah , yeah , that's a thing .

Speaker 2

For sure When he says oh , the new circle looks like your mom , yeah right exactly , yep . Higgins comes in he says , oh , some of the guys paid a visit . What would you ? you know , looks like you know Nate might be . This is good because Higgie , baby , his job is to play a personnel and and stack the team and he wants another race .

He knows what they can do . He's clearly ready to make a road back . He's very much at Wisconsin . The last away , roy . I thought Roy would want to kill him , but he was like no , he's great at the shit I suck at .

Speaker 3

But , but okay . So here's the thing , and I thought this was huge when , because I also thought he would be like fuck that guy . So I was like whoa , like he did catch me off . And I thought , of course , because all that matters is the team .

When you reach this point in total football , it doesn't matter my feelings about someone or if they annoy me , like that's not the point . Is this best for the team ? And if it is , then I know what I got to do And I thought that was cool .

Speaker 2

Now , I did not .

Speaker 3

Yeah Yeah , i was totally caught off guard Now where we went from there . From Beard , he had a decidedly different response , which was what , coach , if you bring that Judas back , i will burn this place to the fucking ground .

Speaker 2

I might have been one of my . It's one of my favorite all time lines on Ted Lasso , because I couldn't think of a line . It was so perfect for a certain segment of the audience that was like , yes , that's the whole , that's what we've been saying What are we discussing ? Yeah , what are we ?

Speaker 3

discussing . Yeah , now , i think it matters and I you know I sometimes I recognize things , but I don't want to get to Judeo Christian on the whole thing . I think it's not my mistake here that we've get that particular reference in terms of the story and that we instead of like a Ben and a Arnold reference or something .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 3

I think because you know , and the end of the end of this episode , we take just a little little piece of bread and I thought oh , they have a little , they have a little fun .

Speaker 2

This is my body given for you , hell . I grew up in the dang church .

Speaker 1

So that church bread is pretty good .

Speaker 2

So yeah , that's right . That's a very interesting . Thanks for making it weird , coach . Yeah , sorry about that . That's cool . Weirdo Beardo Dottie comes in Weirdo Beardo And it's just naughty Dottie , right .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

But he said Lottie Dottie .

Speaker 3

Well no , when they're dancing he says Lottie Dottie , and then he starts .

Speaker 2

Oh , lottie Dottie Not naughty .

Speaker 3

Dottie . No , he says Lottie Dottie and then he starts . He starts doing the song .

College Rejection and Trash Drama

He's the slick Rick Romney's like Lottie Dottie , do you like to party So ?

Speaker 1

yeah .

Speaker 3

I've already received a text from my wife . That was one of the texts that came through Lottie , dottie and laughing emojis came through as we can talk . I am unfiltered with that .

Speaker 2

So I was talking to you and . I was like slick Rick . I'm like no , nothing , i got nothing .

Speaker 3

I will show you that . It's like an absolute classic hip hop , like early hip hop song , like went for him to have done that . It was , it was . It was the equivalent of the Bismarcky .

Speaker 2

The message one of the and the message this year . Yeah , olds , yeah , very , very , very old Yeah .

Speaker 3

That's a good , that was a good pull for that . I mean , you know , a good , a cool reference Nice .

Speaker 2

That's when he goes Yeah , it was a love fest . Everyone's having fun . Someone's got a football team to coach .

Speaker 3

They do a group hug . Yeah , like we finally got our group hug and Ted wants no parts of it .

Speaker 1

Ted wants no parts .

Speaker 2

He's yelling , he's yelling , yelling .

Speaker 3

Like a lunatic .

Speaker 2

Oh my god .

Speaker 3

I was .

Speaker 2

I was cleaning out . I have a barn and we're having a big party and for my mother was over today and I'm trying to do a thing where I'm just getting rid of stuff . Like just got to get rid of stuff And so I throw a bunch of stuff away .

My mom comes in , reaches into the trash can and pulls out like a file folder and I , my head is about to explode . My kids are there looking at me like what you know what I mean . It's like I become a different creature . I'm like did you just reach into the trip ? like put that back .

Speaker 3

No .

Speaker 1

No this is a good folder .

Speaker 2

I'm like you don't need a folder , you don't need anything . Nothing you need for that folder . Put that folder back in the trash . She's like , no , no , no , no , this is a good folder You don't get rid of a good folder . I'm like you got to go . You're banished from the barn , out , you go , that's it . I said I saw you looking around and this is true .

This is verbatim . This is like eight hours ago . I saw you looking around and I let you get away with it because I said she's behaving , she's not do it . Then you reach in the trash . Anytime you reach into the trash you and I have a problem . Every . It'll be for this for the rest of my life . You would .

You do not reach into the trash and she says well , i'm taking this folder , nothing you can do about it , that's it . And on the way it's got a football team of cold . That's exactly it On the way out . I said out , you go , go . You have to get out of the barn .

There's plenty of trouble in the barn And on the way out she grabs , like a cutting board , a cutting board . She's like I'm taking this and walks out with it . I'm like I , oh my God . My kids are looking at me like how , how did you ? How are you alive ? How did you survive this ? It's so close to home . This episode is mental .

Speaker 3

That's great , we're over .

Speaker 2

That was real . That's really happened to me .

Speaker 3

I'm still like Today , yeah .

Speaker 2

This , this day , this very day Yeah .

Speaker 3

I'm glad people got to experience that , because you've given me a few of those over the years and they are always just like wait What ? Sorry , okay .

Speaker 2

Here's the only way to give you another thing I am . When I was applying to college , i was really interested in this program , applied about you know a bunch of places , but I didn't have any help My parents didn't really know about college , and so I didn't do really well about . You know , i didn't get into Yale or anything like that .

I applied to a bunch of , a bunch of really good schools , but for some reason it just wasn't whatever and I didn't do a good job and I didn't really know what I was doing . But there was this one program I was really interested in and it was like a new program and I felt like , okay , i wanted to go into . I knew I want to be a writer .

Do you want to go on to to , you know , write screenplays and things like that . But the other , my other love , was like international politics and I was like , oh , you know . So there was this other school where they were starting up a brand new program .

That was basically the State Department feeder school and I was like , wow , that , that , uh , that was really cool to be like in the inaugural class of that . So I applied all over the place . And this is back when this wasn't like the email days . This is pre email .

Speaker 3

Right , you're mailing . Yeah , you get a letter , you get a package .

Speaker 2

So I got rejected all over the place . I got just just flat out like just hammered because I didn't really know what I was doing .

I think , i like , i think I hand wrote all my you know who I and so I had a really bad like run of rejections and I never even heard back from the place I wanted to go Hmm , the State Department school , and that was it never . Never heard back , and so I went to pick the college , went there and you know the rest is history .

And then about six , years later six years later , i was in my mom's house and I was going through some stuff and I found a book . I just flipping through this book and inside of it was an acceptance letter to that program and she had decided man , it was too far away .

Speaker 3

Huh , oh , it wasn't a mistake .

Speaker 2

No , no , no , she took it and she hid it so that I wouldn't go to this , because it was in Virginia and I was in Massachusetts and she's like no , he's too far away from me , he's like on Virginia . So when I tell you that , right , i know , yeah , coach is stunned .

Speaker 3

That is a , that happened and so right now is not where I thought this story was going , okay right and so yeah you go there is , there is , there is like that .

Speaker 2

You know there's an edge there And so in the same way , you know that you have . Oh yeah , it's like a really nice . Yeah , i bring my mom anywhere and she'll be . You know she'll be a hit , but there's but .

Speaker 3

There's more to it than

Ted Lasso Episode Recap and Analysis

that .

Speaker 2

So we're at KJPR , i need your help with Jamie , you know . First of all , roy , come in , you care to clean the pipes . No , it's around the pipes , nothing . That's why I thought it was weird . You're here , i'm in love with Katie . Next I will watch anything she's in ever .

When he says oh , you know , keely , you know here , need your help with whatever , and you look really good , and he says you too , to pass that , her reaction Yeah . How you know , like I just paid like two quid for this out of like a trunk of a car or something . I'm like , i'm like I love you so much .

I never thought I'm like you're amazing she's an amazing actress like she's amazing . she's amazing , yeah , i love that moment .

Speaker 3

Yeah , because you bought it right , like that could have totally been overdone and weird , you know , like bad , weird , like where you're like what , i don't get what's going on here , but you got it like she maybe even saw that in a movie , who knows , and then , but that was the actual story of that particular blouse , so she told it or whatever like

unbelievable , yeah , but meanwhile remember the thing I used to say .

Speaker 2

You're like oh , when you direct something , you write something . When someone's eating an apple , like I love apples because they're really great for , like you know , for sound engineering , if you really hear that . But like there's a little more in this part . It was a little crazier , but it can be like dismissive , like if .

I , if I you know , i'm talking to you and then I take a bite and I'm just chewing in front of you while you you know it can be like I'm getting kicked out of my house , and you know Exactly right . oh my god it's just a really . It's an easy tool and in this case they use the apple as like just this really weird distracting .

It calls attention back to her . Anyway , i was . I just I've never thought it would be so blown away . But Barbara is pretty great . Not a whole lot cooking here , but just that . Keeley , will you know ? help Roy now ? oh wait , wait , wait , there was a key moment . She says that he's like I want to talk and she's like Roy and he's like no .

So this happened twice in this episode and maybe I'm a little lost with this . I didn't know they were going to be . They were friends .

Speaker 3

After they got together , i thought they were together yeah , i thought that was it , but it seems that now he's ready to be together and she has said hold on , or or or have they discussed it yet , because I don't know .

Speaker 2

It's interesting , cuz . Like , she's like I wanted to talk and she's like no , no , not about us . And he's like okay , and then later on , on Jamie's childhood bed , she says Roy , like like , and you're like wait , what is she gonna say ? anyway , really , really interesting .

Yeah , but anyway , right now , that's when they did all , roy , oh , and he says hey , bud mm-hmm , we're gonna sit on the bed , yeah um Barbara , my god , so good Jesus . So we're in the pub . This is where beers playing Wizard of Oz , ted ends up swapping places with him and we get the poem . This be the verse by Philip Larkin . That's what me is .

Speaker 3

I was gonna go looking for it , so I'm glad you fuck you up , your mom and dad , all that stuff , fools and old-style hats and coats .

Speaker 2

Sometimes , when I want to Google something , no one should Google anymore . By the way , i'm writing an article about this like it doesn't work anymore . Google's like sponsored ads . Sponsored ads . Sponsored ads . Sponsored ad . I know something from 1917 that you didn't ask for and then whatever . So I always tell people , first of all , bing is fantastic .

I can't believe . I'm saying it like I never thought Bing would outdo Google , but also like if you're gonna Google something , just put Reddit in the back like the last word and then it gives you the Reddit thread that answers all your questions . You can be toxic , but that's like an easy fix . Just go read it and then you'll get a good answer .

But I would do this . I'm like , okay , give me the weirdest line . So once I was like , oh , i had to wait for , like fools and old-style hats and coats who half the time were soppy stern . I'm like , oh , yep soppy sturdiness okay , hello , there it is . It's either that or nothing .

But so then we also have PB and J hanging out with Ted's mom , like I didn't know you were all invited them to practice .

Speaker 3

No problem , but this yes , yes , that's a bridge too far yeah , no , no funny and the more they love her , the more he's like just kill me now it's so funny that he's so .

Speaker 2

It is effortless for him , for him to be magnanimous about the club , about , like the bout , just fully breaking a boundary you know , really commonly unspoken but hard boundary of letting anyone into your practice , right , no matter the sport , it just doesn't happen yeah and and meanwhile he can't , he can't be generous at all with his own mother .

Oh so , so interesting , great , fantastic .

Speaker 1

Ted's flat .

Speaker 2

Later on he this is where he says mom gets the bed . This is also like just good upbringing it's funny like you're gonna make your mom sleep on the couch yeah that's crazy pants .

Speaker 3

I would never do you know that's yeah , but I think it's interesting that again , she makes it so much work , excuse me , she makes it so much work for him to do it . Right , like you're right . Clearly she is going to sleep in that bed , right feels to me like there's never any question of that .

So , like , how hard you gonna make me work for each step of this interesting . Here's your washcloth in your towel .

Speaker 2

Oh , washcloth in his towel for me like alright , alright , wash these right , right , right yeah right , you know , i'm sorry , it was got oppressive positivity . Okay , she says Manchesterians and he changes it to he corrects man Cunyans . But I'm like , oh , he's a pro . Now , that's what beard . You see this right , yeah , she said .

He says no , i've actually you haven't anymore in those episodes . You give him the clippings right in the front center is him panic attack . She says you have any more episodes ? he says oh , yeah , i'm actually just doing a little work or whatever she's . Oh , let me guess it's all my fault . I was like , oh , that is it .

Yeah , saucy line out of the blue yeah , yeah , daddy .

Speaker 3

Daddy was ready , she was ready to dismiss the mask broke a little there .

Speaker 2

You know you're like mm-hmm right that , because that's like mm-hmm , that's not just like you know just plain folks , that's , that's that's got a little also .

Speaker 3

Yeah , i mean , i think we're just like the thing where all jokes contain some truth . You know what I'm saying and I you know there's some . There's got to be some percentage of her who knew quite well that he has something to say to her right .

I mean it reminds me sort of of Rebecca and her mom , where she was like , oh well , i'm glad , i'm glad to know you hate me , you know I take care . Or your anger over your indifference .

You know , any day like this felt like that , like I don't know , i just some 10% of her , i don't know but some part of her knew that she had been emotionally unavailable and I think she was kind of depending on him never to make her face it .

And if she needs to make a lasagna and a meatloaf then right , she'll do that , but let's not go there hmm , fascinating .

Speaker 2

I was just thinking that when we talk about Rebecca's mom , i was thinking , oh wait , a second . Rebecca's mom had a dream about Rebecca dying and Nate had a dream about that . He was a pro pecking Ted to death and I'm like , oh god , i wonder if we've had any resolution for those two interesting , i don't know .

I just just popped into my mind while you were saying this . Really , i don't know . Anyway , we find out also that she loves her tea . What you go , god damn the plot thing .

Speaker 3

That's amazing , yeah . Yeah , maybe you don't hate tea because of the the folks you met over here . That was right , yeah yeah , and I believe you never drank it , but I believe you never drank it because his mother drank it , right ? so , yeah , it didn't matter what it tasted like , and I think it's fascinating , oh my god .

All right , this is deep divey , but it just came out naturally so yeah , so that means the night of total football . His mother and his father were with him . He revisits America and at peace with all those things and barbecue sauce , all of it , that's when he gets to his moment of fusion and bringing all the concepts he's had together for total football .

Because so yeah , tea rank the tea .

Speaker 2

I am my god . I did not know you were gonna go here . I totally thought you're going a different direction .

Speaker 3

Wow , wow that means it was all .

Speaker 2

It was all of it that night his mother was the tea and his father was watching that old game the old game yep , the bulls game .

Speaker 3

And he had to process it yep . And he said I just love watching basketball with my dad , but instead of that leading to a panic attack .

Speaker 2

He was right , he had a moment , but he was all right you know , in a very weird way , jamie and Ted have the same motivation . Right there's like a parent that drove fucking nuts and he was rejected the .

Speaker 3

I mean it's the same . I mean it's the same . Fuck you right is I'll show you . And Ted saying I'll show you , because everywhere I go I will spread life , i will spread joy , i will spread connection . I will make sure that all cookies that are too tough get dunked in milk , not like you . You quitter , i never quit . I don't quit shit , i never quit .

Look at you you quit your whole life . I mean it's real , i mean it's not . He , he understands Jamie just fine .

And and and I wonder in some ways , when we go back , whatever happens in 12 , and we go back and just really look at this as a whole , if we'll see , even in the you know cuz you're hurt like I kind of want to rewatch that scene now and all those moments of confrontation with Jamie .

Maybe he understood Jamie better than maybe he even knew yeah , no , maybe .

Speaker 2

Yeah , we should go back and take a look at that now we got loading the bus , we see Jamie fucked up . He , instead of taking a picture with fans , he takes a picture of fans that he walks into a high five with his , with his melon face right in his grill . Okay , he's so messed up . Really quick back to taste of Athens .

Dare listen , i told you Derek would make a fascinating spin off season Derek in this and it was like so brutal , his hair is so much longer and weirder . And do you know who this is ? or do you know this was was ouch , yeah , he used to be this , whatever .

Now he's my head way and the guys like I'm so sorry right in front of Derek , like Derek is like push the fish , you're a ton of fish .

Speaker 3

Push the fucking fish , fish , fish , fish , fish but he just , but he just offered it to these people , right ? so why would you like he's so ? I love that's .

One of the things I like about this character is like he feels like the kind of guy who , like you , got to understand , you got a network , you see , and when you go into a room and you're like , oh god , oh god , please stop saying words . Yes , yes so yeah , so yeah .

So he feels like that to me , where he's like when you're running a restaurant , meanwhile , it's like , yeah , maybe don't say we've got a ton of it out back in front of the customers who you just asked to eat it , what does the matter with you ? yeah , and anyway it's he's so good .

Speaker 2

Spencer Jones is the actor that plays Derek . Just a home run , just just what a great part . There are other parts that didn't have this much meat on the bone . He gets to be a real absolute .

Speaker 3

Yeah knob because yet total , i mean on this show , as funny as it is not , certainly not , like you know , tertiary , tertiary characters like him , they're not really given moments to like , just be that , but he is , he gets moments to really ham it up you know I mean , listen , you get the sense I could be wrong about this , but you're on set and then you

bring in somebody .

Speaker 2

I was on a set one time where they brought in this dude who was just like a day player . He was a known quantity , he had been in shows before but it was a big , huge feature film and he was just like he's like one , one or two days of work and he came in and he fucking killed . He killed it so hard on this one day .

I think he had two days but , i , was there only one of the two days right when they , when they , when they stopped rolling , the crew would fall over . They were laughing so hard . You know , i mean it's like oh my god he was , he was so you know , it's like in real life .

You're like oh , i didn't realize like you are a fucking superstar , like right , right , right .

Speaker 3

I haven't seen you do much , but you can do a lot he got a .

Speaker 2

He got a series out of that like he got a you know when that was out of out of that day that one day because , because the people in this there were some producers on the set and I was talking to him and and they were just like , who the like ? how does this ?

Speaker 1

guy not have .

Speaker 2

He's a , he's a guys , a fucking star but you get the sense like not to the same degree , but you get the sense like , oh , this Spencer Jones dude , he may have like killed it in the you know like whatever and yeah , and then they were like oh yeah , i don't have a couple more , you know , because he's he's , he's great .

So they , the people , settle on drugs .

Ted Lasso

But which ones get the bust of Manchester ? and in the hotel he knocks on Jamie's door and makes it much , much worse .

Speaker 3

He's just a broken mess , like yeah , yeah I . I loved that she made it worse And it was . it was one moment in this thing where I said it was stunning . I did not see that coming . I 100 percent thought we were going to get you know some Coleman Coleman and to have Jamie , you know Keely , get each other . isn't this beautiful ?

Speaker 1

moment .

Speaker 3

And instead they went on a different house Like oh , oh oh , we brag about what a great coach Keely is .

Speaker 2

We've said it 50 times on this podcast Yeah , we think she's an amazing coach , that she just , she's just , i mean , i mean only wrong approach , totally wrong timing . Everything couldn't have been worth everything . Yeah , that's good . We got the hotel movie night . You got mail . People are crying . Jamie seems like Katatonic Efron on three .

Then we got Roy and Keely following Jame . And eventually we got this . Why can't I touch it by ? the buzzcocks is playing over top , gives a little flow . Eventually he catch this is , this is his , these are his streets coach And I catch them . She asked Keely , asked you buying drugs ?

Speaker 3

That's great . And then because they're really looking at him like dude is off , yeah , like something is going on , yeah , so it wasn't such a crazy question .

Speaker 2

So he says come on , we show up with a couple of little kids are playing . Are you Jamie Tart ? Yes , more like Jamie Fart . They start .

Speaker 1

You're first .

Speaker 2

Yeah , he walks it out Like all right , whatever . Walks away . Roy stares him down And then what does he say coach ?

Speaker 3

Good lads . Fantastic , i did not see that fantastic . You know who else he told good lad , i'm pretty sure , because you know I thought there was a big moment was Nate , when he shattered Ted's window . I'm pretty sure he said good lad and then walked away . I have to go back and check , but anyway , i thought this is a very funny moment .

Yes , that was a pretty funny moment , but I like that , he like likes that . I think he's like yeah , good , yeah , you should .

Speaker 2

Yeah , he likes a little . he likes to shake it up a little . So now we meet Simon . Simon cracked me up because this is now Jamie's mom's husband . I'm guessing they're married , I don't think they said it .

Speaker 3

but They have Let me partner .

Speaker 2

Right , yeah . And so one of the things I will say to people about divorce is you know you get married and and then the clarity that you have once the divorce comes isn't always like I know , i know what I want It's I know what I don't want . Like that's because that , that box you've checked off , you go . oh , oh yeah .

Speaker 1

I felt Yeah , I have this list of feelings .

Speaker 2

I have this list of situations , scenarios , whatever , and I know I don't want that And I when I saw Simon I was like that is perfect . They got this guy who's obsessed with the British baking show , great British baking show . He's talking about Paul Hollywood recipes , his kitchen .

Speaker 3

He went to be a big role . Well , yeah , yeah , I would have been wrong .

Speaker 1

Right .

Speaker 2

Exactly And I was like , oh that's . Is there a man on this planet that is more opposite Yeah , jamie's dad than Simon ? you know , simon is lovely , But she's like I don't want to feel like I don't want to feel like I know , you know how I thought , you know how I thought I felt with that guy And yeah , Absolutely .

Speaker 3

But also I love that , simon , when , when Jamie and his mom , you know , basically go hugging into the next room , i believe he says something like there they go , or there they go again , like whatever it was .

I thought I thought it was cool that he was like this isn't necessarily like the most , like normal mother-son interaction , it's theirs , it's fine , We're going to have to talk about this .

Speaker 2

This is going to be a deep dive thing because , OK , when Roy was sitting there staring at Jamie and his mom , I thought it was like what is this ? This is a weird , really cuddly weird .

Speaker 3

That's where I took it Right But it's not , it was Yeah .

Speaker 2

I thought the mom was super hot and right . He was like really into Jamie's mom .

Speaker 3

And he just told Jamie he was going to cut his eyes out ? Cut his eyes out for saying it for his sister to be a fit . Now you now you're arguing his mom .

Speaker 2

There's this beautiful thing where Simon's talking . You know , Keely's like kind of focused on Simon and she like taps , Roy's like oh , it's fucking delicious , like fucking delicious about Because he was . So there's a staring , just a blatant staring , at Jamie's mom .

Speaker 1

Anyway , it was weird That part .

Speaker 2

I was like , oh , i didn't get it . Until he went back for the hug . I was like , hey , one for the road kind of I was like , oh , he thinks she's whatever , she's a beautiful woman . I just I wasn't sure I thought he was reacting to like the real .

Speaker 3

Oh , she's babying James , yeah that's the way I took it at first . Yeah , but no . I think we're American , we're uncomfortable with with closeness and I guess , yeah , i mean , maybe that's , yeah , maybe that is part of it . But yeah , i was like , oh , wait a minute , that's a lot of hugging . It's a long hug . It's a long hug , it's all I'm saying .

Speaker 2

We got Nate and Nate and Jay at home . She tells him to stop working . He's a coach . This is where he says it's on my fault . That's basically the key takeaway He talks about oh , you pay 5p for peanuts and make five quid , And why am I the only person thinking about stuff ? Not a whole lot cooking , but still , it's all my fault was a huge step .

I'm going to start blasting through as fast as I can coach . So you stop .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

And say something .

Speaker 3

No , just quickly . He sees things other people don't see , and his father did say that to him , and if he doesn't have a pitch to look out at , then it'll be a restaurant .

Speaker 2

That's the thing . He's good at everything you touch , everything touches . He's good , he sees , takes pride in his work and right , he's analytical and that's good . Jamie , mom , she says out with it . He asked if she heard from dad . She calls the dad a human ball . I haven't heard from that human ball . Sack , all right , and Jamie .

Speaker 3

I'm pretty sure it doesn't fall into the don't bad mouth The other parent . I'm just . I don't . I've never seen the list , but I'm guessing that is not on the list of acceptable terms .

Speaker 2

Typically no , but he he seems like an outlier . I get it . I get it Because fuck him is why Jamie played . I couldn't believe they won with this line . I wrote a line from True Detective which is one of the worst lines ever written , And Vince Vaughn was trying to be very serious and he wrote That's why did you not know what this line was ?

I wrote in here .

Speaker 3

No , and I went back and watched the scene again .

Speaker 2

I was like they don't say that , But I got So the line is it's like blue balls in your heart And I'm like like 100 million people No , no , it's only probably five million watching him do that on True Detective And and you just like what the fuck ? So it just happened .

Jamie and Roy's Relationships

That's the worst line I've ever heard . And then I'm like how could they even approximate that ? Anytime you do , you know , when you really doesn't get hard , but it's your soul , i'm like Jamie pulled it off a million , like whatever . I was like oh , this is auspiciously close to that construction .

Speaker 3

Oh really , it's like yeah .

Speaker 2

You can like the people like , made like memes of it It's , it's like one of the worst like a famous is like terrible , terrible line , terrible writing , terrible delivery .

Speaker 3

But anyway . Jamie , he definitely pulled off , but I thought , i thought it for me and I hear what you're saying now . I think I experienced it , as Jamie is like infantalized right now . And so it felt a bit like the way a little kid might describe something .

Speaker 1

OK , you know what I mean .

Speaker 3

Yeah , i can see that .

Speaker 1

I mean I get that , that's how I tracked for you .

Speaker 2

I thought it was weird to bring up like a erection analogy with your mom . But I'm like OK , i don't think I Yeah not ever the way I went .

Speaker 3

But you know , be curious , not judgmental . I guess .

Speaker 2

Yeah , Hey , what are you going to do ? Takes all kinds coach . Now we're in Jamie's room . I love the English flag over the bed .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Across the St George And then you say , oh my God , he just played Frank like , like the big one over his bed .

Speaker 3

Like yeah .

Speaker 2

England first And you go , my God he just made it the team And then you turn around and see Ronnie Keeling on the wall . It is like phenomenal . Yeah , when he came in for England , jesus , jamie , i wept . I . That made me so . Oh , wow , i really was really blown away by that .

Speaker 3

Jesus wept . We're a little bit there for any good .

Speaker 2

She calls his dad a tow rag . She says you're not lost . my sexy little baby , and I was like yes . There was a Taylor Swift song recently that got a lot of flack , One of her new songs that everybody liked , or maybe it was when she redid her old album , I forget , But anyway there was a song about sexy babies in it And it made people go crazy .

They're like why are you like ? that's a weird sexy baby Like Jesus . That's what that reminded me of . You're not lost , my sexy little baby . Remember ?

Speaker 3

he said that when he put the , he put the cleats in the fire . That's how he described himself , and I never would have guessed that he says that because that's what his mother says about him , but apparently it is Yeah good , i forgot about that , holy shit , yeah , yeah .

Speaker 2

I was just sick to it baby Roy is on on , says this is fucking weird . or in , you know us on Jamie's childhood bed . You know all concerned about it . They do the thanks babe , roy . oh , thanks , bud . I don't want to be his friend . She says Roy , but we don't get any closure because Jamie , Well , it's , it's , it's saved by the bell .

Mom says to him they're parting outside And his mom do we have a name for ? we don't have a name , right .

Speaker 3

I think , so I can watch again . But yeah , i don't remember a name being said That's appropriate .

Speaker 2

I mean , i don't know why they give female characters names anyway . I mean , who's you know ? it's like This is a patriarchy . Hello , no , hello .

Speaker 1

Son of a patriarchy .

Speaker 2

Ok , No , I was trying to think . Ok , we didn't But say I want to believe . Never got a name , Right , Jamie's mom never got a name And obviously Rebecca Schofer never got one for the road Roy that he was going to go in and run for the road . That's so great , I'm like that is so .

And then he says see you later And he goes , and then he goes love you .

Speaker 3

Yeah , love you .

Speaker 2

I was like , oh God , what's happening ? What the fuck love you , i thought that was like I ever I was like what is going on ?

Speaker 3

Like did we see .

Speaker 2

I'm like is this ? is she like an amalgam of Miss Bowen and Keely ? Like is she like the socioeconomically ? Is she like the perfect woman for him Before You ?

Speaker 1

know what .

Speaker 2

I mean Like she's got , like she's got the you know she's not upper crusty She's . She's a football fan . She's loving She's . Her love language is clearly like touch She's , she's , she's effusive with her . That's her affection . She's super cool . She's kind of a badass Hot . I don't know . I was like is she like the ?

Speaker 3

interesting Like yeah , i mean I was .

Speaker 2

I don't know , But like I haven't seen Roy act like this , Right , He's like whoa . She's really dear Keely has to like literally drag him away . So funny . All right , so now we get to the hotel . Of course , keely is the hotel ambassador .

Speaker 3

It's great .

Speaker 2

And latest in workout technology , like yoga mats Fantastic . The mom texted him with the Wi-Fi password . She said she kind of writes that she didn't go . That is so . Oh my God , passive , aggressive stuff like that kind of thing . There's a , there's a , there's a

Football Match Strategy Discussion

dynamic . I don't know why I attract people who make fun of me . Juliana attracts people who pass aggressively , ask her for things . So they like , hey , hey , can you come to my party ?

Like yeah , sure , oh , you know what , i forget , if it's not too much trouble , like if don't do it , if you don't , if you don't have time , but like if you can get like a sheet cake that serves like 50 people and like this is like I know this is a huge ass , but like seriously don't do it , i'll just go without it , but like and if I could ?

say happy birthday , renee . you're like wait what Like that's her Yeah . I was like how does this And you can hear it coming That part is like oh , I wish I had come , Don't you put that You can see him .

Speaker 3

Yeah , because he's like why even Yeah For me ? it maybe actually is me projecting it , but it was like why would you even tell me that ?

Speaker 1

Like let's say , you did realize who you helping right now .

Speaker 3

Who you helping . What's what's ? Yeah , what are we going to do with that piece of information ?

Speaker 2

Ask yourself coach .

Speaker 3

Feel bad .

Speaker 2

What does this situation need ?

Speaker 3

And exactly you know what His , his mom was . The opposite of total football , she was nil football . Yes , yes , she was needed and she was absent in the way she was needed by Ted , and that vacuum he's been skating around trying to fill for people everywhere he's been since , for everybody but himself , for everybody but himself , until the end of this episode .

Right , yeah , beautiful , he accepts some of it .

Speaker 2

So now we got Ed Had Stadium . At Had Stadium , I don't have to pronounce it , They're singing Blue Moon . We're at the 40 minute ish mark 39 and change of the episode . I felt like , oh my God , I felt like we were 10 minutes in . I was like I can't believe 40 minutes have gone by .

Speaker 3

I know .

Speaker 2

We got a joke about how Freddie Mercury briefly tried to make . I didn't know , is it Fat Bottom Girls or is it Flat Bottom ?

Speaker 3

Girls It is . It is Fat Bottom Girls . But in the way they did the joke , the Flat Bottom Girls were the ones who got upset , which I thought was funny in talking about the way time changes , because Keely's assumption was that people would be like , oh , that's offensive .

But it was only offensive because I was like , no , no , no , no , i have a flat bottom , so I don't want that song sung .

Speaker 2

Rebecca's dad went to school with Freddie Mercury . He was so proud that he could sing four octaves .

Speaker 3

No , what was his real favorite , the next straights which I looked up to fishing thing . I was like oh , no , no , flipping straights .

Speaker 1

As in poker .

Speaker 3

No , no , no , no , no , no no no , no , no , no , no , no , flipping straights is if you take a straight man and you turn him gay . Flipping straights . Yeah , i looked it up . No , it was hilarious . I was like I have never heard that in my life And I looked it up and I was like , ok , what ?

Yeah , yeah , yeah , flipping straights , That makes a lot more sense , But yeah , I looked it up and it was this whole thing , this whole fishing thing , down the page . You just told me not to Google . I guess this is our do not .

Speaker 2

Google . It's absolutely worthless . It is worth . That's great , there you go In real time . Something no one ever says . You're starting to see people say Bing it on network TV because there's product placement .

Speaker 3

Now you're starting to see like , hey , I'm going to .

Speaker 2

Bing , that Like that sounds terrible . It does not have the same ring . But yeah , flipping straights , man Got it Right , that's .

Speaker 3

that's a ton .

Speaker 2

More sense Makes a ton of us like I don't , Jack does too . Not , really , not really though because I think he said she'd kiss me Yeah , no yeah , yeah .

Speaker 1

All right , but it's interesting .

Speaker 2

Yeah , but I don't want to compare Jack to Freddie Mercury , who's a legend , and Jack is Haunted into the Red Sea . Ok , so we're back in the pub . They're getting ready for the game . How many players do you want ? Three , what if I can't get back to you in half time ? They want 12 .

Speaker 1

12 . Great .

Speaker 2

Now we get the teams walking out . I was so fired up . I did a thing where I'm I'm like because this is my , this is , this is what I love about the show . And I did a thing where I was like they're walking out and I looked around . I was like Paul , by myself watching this episode , and I go , oh , oh , like this .

And I look around , like is anybody with me to win ?

Speaker 1

Like no , i'm totally by myself , but I'm like oh , my God oh my God , this is this is it Like I'm shaking , i'm so excited .

Speaker 2

They do the whole thing . You know they zip back and forth Lot of cross , cutting mom and Simon , up to Rebecca and Keeley and Higgins . There's some guy yells welcome home .

Speaker 3

dickhead to Jamie as it comes in Yeah , they were letting him have it pretty good .

Speaker 2

Arlo mentions that city can clinch the title with a win . And right off the bat , jamie's getting we . we alluded to this , or we talked about in the beginning . they are going , they're going to go on , they're on him , like , like white on rice . There you go .

Now we get a cut to the taste of Athens , where Nate is watching And he actually goes Colin's open . I'm like , oh , that's so interesting . Like still a little speedy for my taste , but OK , ok like I'm close enough to to accept .

Speaker 3

But but I loved it on another level , which is , like you said , they're not the team he left . So Colin being open doesn't mean if I'm Jamie , that I pass to Colin . I pass to the person who can most easily pass to Colin . Right , colin's open and what ?

he hit is a bummer catch or somebody right Yeah bummer catch to Colin for the header And I thought that that was really cool , that that and they call it out in the in the commentary , but that he's seeing two passes ahead . Yes , Yes you see , you see that , but he sees that . I thought that was very cool , coach here's the thing and we can't .

Speaker 2

This is a deep dive thing , so we're going to say it and then we're going to move on . They can't beat Man City . Every single time they played Man City up to this point , it was a . You cannot beat them , you know ? yeah , you're fucked like you know , trent ? Oh , what about a long ball game ? What about ? no , they're , they're athletic , athletic .

Right Backline , right There's . They do not have the horses , and now they're up one mil against Man . City in Manchester , right , oh , higgins is so , he won't , he won't move . It was so perfect .

Speaker 3

I love to that Rebecca's like got it , because once you're in that , at that level of rooting insanity , whatever the person thinks of the person's like oh , i have to sit on my hat . You're like got it Fair enough , like what ? anything you need .

Speaker 2

Season one Rebecca goes .

Speaker 3

Oh please , leslie like yeah , oh yeah , oh yeah , Oh no yeah .

Speaker 2

But she's like , she's now , she's like oh , yep , okay , good Yeah , like yes .

Speaker 1

That might be what's making us win .

Speaker 2

We finally get Pep Guardiola , which is like super fun to see . Something that drove me crazy was pet makes an adjustment and Ted's like oh , i'm going to say nothing . yet I'm like no , that's what happened with Nate .

Speaker 3

Nate made an adjustment and then they squirted him like you didn't learn anything , what the hell ?

Speaker 2

I see , yeah , you see the adjustment , you adjust , but I guess , like with total football , you know they weren't ?

Speaker 3

they didn't know what they adjust . They didn't know what the adjustment was .

Speaker 2

They like they saw that That's their job . Coach , that's their job . I understand .

Speaker 3

I understand , i understand .

Speaker 2

You wouldn't take that If that was you on the sideline we talked about the other day coach and I were talking about like coaching together And I was like you know what I don't think I want to be . I don't like the X's and O's as much as I like Like I would like to run the . I would like to be in Higgins' job or Rebecca's job .

I'd like to put the whole thing you build the entire thing and then just give it to coach and go . You run it .

Speaker 3

Go do the thing .

Speaker 2

But if you were on , the sideline and I was running the organization and I'm like , seriously , you're going to not make adjustments . You would be like , yeah , man , i know , i know . Like I knew what they were doing , because if you said like oh , coach , did you know what they were doing ?

Speaker 3

No , i didn't have an idea , no idea .

Speaker 2

I didn't plan for that . You'd be like what ?

Speaker 1

the hell .

Speaker 2

Anyway , it's fine . It's fine , they didn't have to , because total football , total football .

Speaker 1

I think , that's the new answer . Play your game .

Speaker 2

Yeah , Van Dam is absolutely on fire . That saves him . Fantastic . I loved this because what happens is the way these are always shot . It's like oh , if a guy gets open , he scored That's a goal , because otherwise they're not going to shoot it . You know they're not going to shoot the scene , They're not going to waste footage .

Speaker 3

Right If a guy gets behind the line right , because it doesn't make any sense .

Speaker 2

You don't have him get saved and they kept doing it like oh , when you're like , oh , no , he is a barrage of shots in this game . Jamie Meanwhile slide tackle , taking his legs out . He's just getting a submarine left and right . Piss off back down south , pretty boy .

Speaker 3

Yeah , I mean they are letting him have it .

Speaker 2

There's this movie . Brandon Gleason is like just an actor that I'm madly in love with And he had to play like a country cop . He's a Dubliner who loves Dublin .

And he had to play this like sort of hayseed Irish cop and like a local constabulary kind of thing And he had to tell in the in the movie it's the guard , the guard is the name He has to tell somebody . In the movie he says a line fuck off back to Dublin . You like fuck off back to Dublin .

And he was like I don't think I saw an interview with him . He's like I don't think I've ever had to say something so that hurt me so much in my soul . He's like fuck off back to Dublin . Totally the opposite of who he is as a person . And I was like it reminded me of that when I say piss off back down south , pretty boy . Oh , it's so , so good .

Oh , that reminds me I'm going to save it for a very special episode but , I got a great tweet from one of our butter cups And it was so great . Found out there from Glasgow , where's my brother-in-law is from Scotland And there's this great thing that he taught me about Glasgow And I'll not going to do it right now .

I'm going to share it on the show in the very special episode . Now with a 65th minute , which means we already passed half time . We just glossed right over half time . I was like , oh , this is interesting , like because when you're up one nil you don't necessarily need to see what's the speech at half time .

Speaker 3

Like , keep it up fellas , just do it Yeah .

Speaker 2

Let's do it . You really need to see pep speech , but we know what it's going to be . Get one back , and you're right back in this . All we have to do is tie .

Speaker 3

You know , if we tie , ties as good as a win , which is exactly the opposite of what we had the other , like last time , they could have gotten the tie and it would have been good enough .

Speaker 2

Yes , exactly right . We get a double , we got a set piece , i think it was a corner . Kick comes in or some other set piece , i think it was a corner , a double header , bam , bam into a wide open goal , despite band down playing the game of his life .

Yeah , this one , jamie just flying in and just scissors it out , bicycles it out and lands weird on his ankle . Now Jamie goes down and , like the hush , falls over the entire stadium .

Speaker 3

Now I won't go all the way down the store , but I think it's important right here , even just telling the basic story , that giving your body up like this , like the great , to have stories like this , and whatever we want to say about whether the sports are overemphasized or whatever , they're just players who will be known forever for some play where they just

extended themselves in a way that nobody could believe . Yes , and how . How total football is it that Jamie , who they were just going to let stay out front and score goals like he loves , like he loves to do , ends up not only not scoring a goal at that moment , but basically filling in for the goalie .

Like it's like , truly the opposite , but it was what the situation needed in that moment .

Speaker 2

And listen . It's not atypical that your defense like you'll have defenders that'll head the ball out of them . You know they'll , they'll , they'll , they'll , you'll put a guy on the post and you'll say you just have a defender standing on the post like no matter what , stand here and don't let someone head the ball right here .

You know , like use any part of your body to keep it out . So that's not atypical . You having another player sort of back up the goalie is something that happens , but not when Jamie did it , where he came flying in , kicked it backwards over . You know what I mean .

Speaker 1

So yeah , above and beyond

Toughness and Unexpected Talent in Hockey

. I always tell the story about .

Speaker 2

We talk about toughness . I always talk about this one player hockey player got a slap shot and I forget the year and I forget the player , but I just remember the story . Took a slap shot in the face in the first period , went out , went out of the game , got 36 stitches in his face .

In the second period came back on third period , score the winning goal And you go like that is a tough mother , fuck you know . You just go like and these guys are just you know that kind of guy , jamie , he lands funny . but but man , that , that's , that's it . That goal goes in a change of the game They can bunker .

Oh , absolutely , they can just pull back and just just played the park the bus . Yes , exactly , yes , that's it . They can't afford to park the bus right now because they have to score , they have to extend themselves , they have to take risks . But if that goes in , it's a whole different ballgame .

He gets up , tries to walk it off and goes down again , and that then you go . Oh shit , now we're in trouble . What does Ted say on the sidelines ?

Speaker 3

Heal him . Oh , the first one . It's like almost , it's like he's been influenced by Roy , but he's still not going to drop a full on F bomb , right ? So that was , that was fun .

Speaker 2

Nate is watching from taste of Athens , watching him limp off . Ted goes over to the trainers Yeah , Heal him . They decided to play with 10 men . We'll get into all this in the deep dive . Van Dam is a wall . Just save after sees like a like a Puma back there . It's unbelievable . Fantastic The reflexes and like where did this come from ?

I was so here for it because we just haven't seen this . They have not established when another team shoots , it doesn't go in .

Speaker 1

When they show us those shots .

Speaker 3

it's to show us the ignore , no it's great , or the go ahead , because yeah the closest we've come to this was the end of season one post game , the onward speech where Ted says that Van Dam had I mean that Zorro had as many saves as a Baptist minister So yeah , so , but we but you're right , though , that we don't see it And there really is drama to that

. When you do watch , you know what I've called soccer on my . when you do watch , i do appreciate , but you know those saves , i mean like games , and one nil games and two , one like that one goal matters . It's not like a basketball game where it's like , oh , a basket scored . you know there'll be 50 , 60 others . That goal is everything .

So I thought it was pretty cool .

Speaker 2

You know how one of my universal limits is that all children all over the world , and every so was every , every culture , every , you know , every , every corner of the world , don't get a chance to like try everything , just want everybody to try every musical , every type of sport every time , But every single type of craft and every type of hobby , because I

think everybody's got these hidden talents . And we have a friend got years ago .

He sort of fallen out of touch with him a little bit but his son started playing goalie and hockey And I remember him saying to his dad he was six or seven years old This is where I belong , Like this is where I belong , and , and now he's a nationally ranked kid , he never gets tired of playing goalie .

Oh , I tell the story about how Wayne Gretzky , the great one , the Michael Jordan of hockey , coming out after after a game And some parents came up to him and said , Hey , will you tell Ricky here ? I tell our son , you know , he's really got to go out there and try and got to put in the extra work . And Wayne just looks at me .

he's like nobody ever had to . had to tell me like they couldn't get me off the ice , Like the Zamboni would be on and I would still . they really get off , Like right At this point . It's like if you don't love it you know , don't force it . It's not , it's not , it's not that . And so we , we hark you sort of like .

This is a callback to the moment where you put the strings on right And you , oh , this is like when everybody take a name and you become somebody else . Zorro is running around , takes a shot on bumper , catch right , and you and you called out like not a great shot , not a great save . But , maybe , just maybe , get so much fun out of the goal .

But when he got back in he might have thought you know what this is , where I belong . And then he's like I'm going to show it .

Speaker 3

I don't know , But it was beautiful I mean I think no , it was great to see , and you know what I mean .

I don't think we should dismiss either , you know , because it was done by Randy Dojas and we all laughed Like he got his nose , like he's wearing that mask because his nose is broken And if he gets hit in the face , wrong again , like before this is all healed up , he could die Like I mean , like we're you know to be .

It's easy to in the story , experience it a certain way , but to then get back in goal and be this good , i think , is even if we were , if we were watching this and they were talking about it on SportsCenter , they'd be going nuts right now .

Speaker 2

I mean , it'd be like oh my God , you talk about like playing , like your life depends on it . Yeah , kind of there it is . Right . It's not lost on me , though , that this is some , this is some . Canadians are the just the greatest people in the . It's so vicious to wound the sweet Canadian .

Speaker 3

I know All he did was offer you . Doritos . So I slowly did . He offered you some of his Doritos .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so you'll be my big chink at the mother . He said , with crazy eyes , turn back , mumbling under his breath Right . And on top of it he didn't get his sex show . You know , zero , i know . Come on , guys . Like we're sitting , like we're just not seriously .

Speaker 3

Good , yeah , he's like nope , sorry buddy .

Speaker 2

He's been a real treat this season . It's been a lot of fun . So anyway , jamie , all the sidelines said goes up to Oh no , sorry , skip something . Derek fires Nate . We find out that Jade gave him an ultimatum . What he says he says am I getting promoted ? call back to Shandy And remember that's what she said .

Speaker 3

Nice , you're right , yeah , nice , nice And .

Speaker 2

Derek fires me . He's like , Oh , I can't tell you what she threatened you And you'll know what I did . And I'm like I'm telling you this is , this would be a fun show . This guy is a . what the hell did you do ? My mind just goes in seven directions .

Speaker 3

Well , you know I'm a sucker for that joke .

Speaker 2

Which one is funny .

Speaker 3

I love the joke where like the classic one for me quickly is in Shrek the dragon grabs donkey and has donkey off screen And you just hear Eddie Murphy's voice . Go Whoa , what you gonna do with that .

That's just hysterically funny Because that joke is as dirty as your mind And my mind's filthy right And I was just like that's a brilliant joke , like I 'll never get bored of that joke because you fill in the blank And no matter what punchline I were to put there , i limit who is blown away by the joke , but by not having it filled in it's whatever

insanity you would bring to it .

Speaker 2

That is a beautiful point . I love that , coach , love it , love it , love it . What you gonna do with that ? So funny .

Speaker 3

I've tackled What you gonna do with that .

Speaker 2

Shrek of all places . Jamie's screwed up on the sidelines . Ted goes to check on him . You gonna make it . They've given him a quarter zone shot or something . And Jamie says he can't find his dad , keeps looking around , can't find my dad's fucking me up . What would you say if you found him ? I'd say fuck you . And then I'd say thank you .

We're gonna have to deep dive the hell out of that .

Speaker 3

Yeah , you don't need to go down that road right now , but that was intense , Exactly .

Speaker 2

If hate in your pops ain't motivating you like you used to , you know , maybe you forget . I'm not doing that for that motherfucker . I'm not giving him that . No , don't give him that . Do it for yourself .

Speaker 3

Now , yeah right , i mean this is Ted saying Hey kid , i could save you , i don't know . 30 years , a divorce . I mean it kind of felt to me like right .

Speaker 2

He's on that road , he's not taking his own device until later , like it's funny , like you're right , but it's like , yeah , if you can get this done , you're gonna . I'm setting you up a lot better than I was set up for sure .

Speaker 3

Right .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 3

No , that's so . yeah , i was . it was curious for me to watch that exchange , especially because you know you've had this ongoing sort of substitute dad thing going on with Ted and Jamie . So that was , yeah , i bought it , i really bought it . I bought that .

I mean , when you , it's sort of like I'm trying to think of a better or a more straight line example . But you know , princess Bride , it's like well , once , once you've been spending your whole life , you know I am an eagle Montoya , or an eagle Montoya or an eagle Montoya , and then it's done Play well Shit . what do I do now ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , I've been in the revenge business so long .

Speaker 1

It's so crazy .

Speaker 2

Yeah , no , it's right He . he says , uh , yeah right , no , you're right . He redirects him . It's kind of on the nose , but it somehow works .

Yeah , it was fine , i was fine , but yeah , yeah , it was fine , it was good , it was like Jamie , has a moment of realization , somehow clicks , which is what we've been waiting for , and then I was like this was like rocky for me This next moment when he gets up and he does

Jamie's Heroic Moment and Classy Move

. This face was like like we kind of like like , shut the fuck up to the crowd . I'm like , oh my God . Then he points the thing , sticks his tongue out . I'm like , points to the crest on his shirt . You know all that . I'm like , oh my , i was so fired up . Sam has the same , was beaming because everybody knows what it means .

Speaker 3

Look , he's back .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah .

Speaker 3

He's not crying anymore . We're going to win .

Speaker 2

We are like when you see that , that is like Oh my God , No , it's fantastic , Superman is here .

Speaker 3

Yeah , And I just synthesis . There's so much about as we're watching each of these characters . There's so much about taking all these elements of them that we've seen and then presenting this like synthesized version of them .

Right , This completed version of them to us And for me , Jamie , as he was told in the signal , they're going to be moments where it's best for you to be a prick And him being a prick gave everybody else conference , like you're saying , like something you need . That guy It's like Jamie , you have the personality .

Sam is never going to look at that crowd and say like he may do any number of things , but it won't be that . But , Jamie , you could do it And you could really like get a hold of this crowd and turn them against themselves . You know , I thought it was , yeah , I thought it was the culmination of a lot of things we've seen .

Speaker 2

Jamie putting his hand to his ear , like yeah , what , what ? Like fuck you , that's all crowd .

Speaker 3

Like I give a shit .

Speaker 2

This is just fuel for me . I stood up . I'm on my feet at this point .

Speaker 3

I am on my feet in my house as he gets up and he's going out there doing all that . I'm on my feet , and then please , just , yeah , just walk as quick , because I will deep dive the hell out of this .

Speaker 2

Just get us through it Really quickly read what I wrote in the in the doc .

Speaker 3

Jamie gets cocky , so fucking pumped .

Speaker 2

That was me . I just like couldn't take . the pub is singing Jamie Tartte .

Speaker 1

Van Damme is still sick .

Speaker 2

Save after six save , amazing , jamie comes in . Meg's a dude . Now this is like a very , very confusing sequence because I couldn't tell what happened here and I couldn't tell what they were trying to do And I'm like , oh , they didn't get enough on the day , they didn't have the footage to make it work .

Like I'm like because I didn't know , i wasn't like it looked like he hurt himself and then he shot it . It looks like he stopped and hurt , got hurt , and then I don't know , like , okay , we figured out that he scored , but the lead up we saw him beating people . We saw him like , okay , he traps the ball goes . Meg's a guy .

Right after he traps it He's faking out guys left and right , but then we don't see it .

Speaker 3

I imagined he sent it from a hell of a long way out , just like he did that penalty kick , because everyone's reaction was sort of like whoa , like you know what I mean . Like there was a moment of like wait , did he just kick ? Like I don't know , maybe I'll rewatch it , but I felt like there was a moment of wait , a minute . Did he just kick that ?

And then like then the score . I felt like there wasn't so much time and not just slow motion of it , but like there was so much time in between . that that was probably a part of what was at play .

Speaker 2

I read it totally different . I read it . Yeah , he's like three feet from the goal .

Speaker 3

Oh , wow , so okay . So then , yeah , and I trust your instinct . you know what I mean , like way more than I just didn't see a big one .

Speaker 2

I didn't see a big wind up , But he was flat footed And then he just tapped it And I'm like okay , that's got it .

Speaker 3

Yeah , and it's also . that's also an interesting . you talked about not seeing the saves . How often do we see a goal scored ? Or you don't see the goal . You don't see the goal , and , but you do .

but you see what matters , because and and pep you know we'll get to him in a second , where I'm going to jump out a little bit , because pep repeats essentially Ted's take on coaching . Not a verbatim , was it verbatim ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , verbatim .

Speaker 3

So , so , so I think it's telling that in the context of this show , that is doing something around the last away , not just showing us a soccer team win and lose , that , how the goal went in and whatever else , none of that matters , we are . This is Jamie's true moment Like this is full crystal .

Speaker 2

It's a choice . You stay on him because he's the thing that matters , not the goal .

Speaker 3

He's what ? yeah , no , who gives a shit ? It's a ball going into a net .

Speaker 2

I give a shit because I was waiting for this moment , yeah . Over man city . In there , in their fucking house , people singing blue moon around you , and you go up to a team you had no prayer of . You couldn't be on the same pitches this team .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 1

And I'm like , oh , my God they got , embarrassed They got embarrassed .

Speaker 2

There's also a man . There's also this beautiful gentleman . Wait , what were you going to say ?

Speaker 3

No , remember when Jamie's dad came in and he was busting their balls , Oh yeah .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , yeah , sorry You guys , you know , yeah , you guys are like Jamie or whatever he said . Yeah , Yeah . Yeah , the pub freaks out and everybody loses their shit all over the place . Yeah , it was unbelievable . Arlo calls out that it's a class move that Jamie doesn't celebrate in his former , which . it is a class that is . that's a thing .

Speaker 3

And I don't mind celebrations , but I like that he didn't celebrate in this moment . It was almost like the moment was too big for celebration , which I thought was kind of a cool way to play that .

Speaker 2

It's so classy . What's the thing we always say ? Act like you've been there . Act like you've been there before . That is such a I don't know why is that so important to us ? I know we've been saying this for 30 years since we've been there .

Speaker 1

Right Like we , just we really admire the act like it's such a cool move .

Speaker 2

You know what I mean . It's not I don't know . It's very , it's very commendable And Jamie making the right moves every time , Jamie making the extra pass .

Speaker 3

You can do no wrong .

Speaker 2

It's unbelievable . He's a real wonder wonder kid . So we get a late sum , which is , you know , he's done his duty , he did what he needed to do . Let's pull him out , which case , in that moment , we get this . This is what I'm saying , jamie , i wrote . Jamie is Roy , that's it . He was every bit the warrior , every bit the iron man .

I played , hurt my whole . You know they're talking on the side . I tend to subscribe to . You know Beards , you know you and I are both , so there's a player for the people don't know Robert Griffin . Robert Griffin Jr .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 1

And Robert Griffin the third . Sorry Sorry , robert .

Speaker 2

Griffin , the third , who was a just , absolutely beautiful player . A rock could run , could pass , like at all every measurable you could ever want , and his coach played , him hurt and he took a shot to the knee and that was it That was it .

Speaker 1

It was like you want to kill the couple .

Speaker 2

You're like you . You made , you ruined something beautiful . It's like fight club , but not in the way that the messaging around that thing and fight club . This was just like you broke something that didn't need to be broken . Yeah , and it was this man's life and , and you know , your heart bleeds for him .

I mean , granted , he got to play as a backup and he's had , you know , decent backup quarterback is the greatest job in the entire .

Speaker 3

Yeah , nobody hits you . You make a ton of cash . Millions , millions of dollars You hold up . Who was it ?

Speaker 2

Chris Redmond . That's my hero , chris Redmond . I think he played three plays over a 15 year career .

Speaker 1

He's just collected millions of dollars .

Speaker 2

He sucked those three plays . Yeah , he was terrible . But he was . Everybody must have loved him . They always wanted him around . He made . He probably brought in a 40 , 50 million dollars over , like at least four or five million a year , like oh my God .

Speaker 3

Yeah , no . I mean , and that's like you know for for yeah , for quarterbacks , yeah , but yeah , i thought that I love that he is , but I think again , he didn't get it and he had to go get it . in a way , if he stays you know , now we're really talking about Providence If he stays , if he stays in Richmond , does he ever get to this point ?

I'm not sure he does .

Speaker 2

No , no , how Yeah ?

Speaker 3

Right , yeah , like you got to go through some things sometimes in life .

Speaker 2

You remember him going to Ted and asking a you know a coach , can you in the bar ? You know , jamie , i don't think it's All the moments he had to like these growth points where he's got , he's on his growth edge and you know , right there on the sidelines he could yeah , i can't go back in . And he's like wait , no , you know what I mean .

And then he's like if he doesn't go back in . He doesn't become what we will , what people will . Every little kid in England is putting a Jamie Tartt poster on their wall in the same way that they put Roy he put Roy . Tant , because that's what he's become .

Speaker 3

I mean , i just feel like Jamie . you know he had to go through some things And sometimes you got to go out into the world and take some shots And that helps too And also helps you appreciate home . You know , i used to joke around all the time , i didn't know . toilet paper costs money , you know . But when you live on your own you'll find out .

You'll find out .

Speaker 1

Toilet paper costs money .

Speaker 3

Everything else costs money too . You're like , damn , this shit costs a lot . So you know , i just think that sometimes you got to get out into the world and learn those things . I think you know his ability to come home and you talk about Ted's almost insistence that everybody have a role they can take back .

I think that's , you know , that's humongous , but it wasn't just gonna be . You know hey , i'm down on my luck And also that he had to look out for the team And at that point I think there was a point to be made that he was making the right call for all the reasons . I mean , sam wasn't cussing and acting crazy because Ted was wrong .

Speaker 2

Right .

Speaker 3

You know , Ted was right .

Speaker 2

Yes , that's a common refrain , So also at some point . I think it's bad that Yelts Jamie Tartt , you Fucking King . I swear to God , didn't even yell , roy , can't you fucking King ?

Speaker 3

I'm going back . I'm so sure It's so funny . I'm sure Now I'm really sure it must be right , because I had the thought . I'm gonna go look for that , because I'm pretty sure he said the same exact thing .

Speaker 2

Yeah , i right That we both thought it . Jamie , coming off the city supporters , arlo's talking about the city supporters . actually , like you know , reluctantly I was like yeah , they say we saw something beautiful .

Speaker 3

Yeah , yeah .

Speaker 2

Yeah , it's amazing when they have what a moment , what a moment . I got so choked up , that's fantastic . I mean , i , i , i , yeah , oh God , this , yes , yes , just like Roy .

Speaker 3

I mean , it was , it was , it was beautiful . I was like , oh my God , it's so great .

Speaker 2

When Jamie first got up , when he got injured on the play and he got up , Roy was clapping like a maniac . He was so in it for .

Speaker 3

Jamie , yeah , and then when ?

Speaker 1

Jamie comes off the field .

Speaker 2

It's Roy who , everyone , whatever , but Roy goes up to me and whispers something . I don't know what he whispers , couldn't make it out And you know what .

Speaker 3

Remember I said I think it was like an episode of guy was saying that they give people these intimate moments that we are not invited into , as much as we get to know what these ? characters it's not for you And I think you know , roy , i mean technically I am a heterosexual white man .

Speaker 1

So I mean it's all for yeah . no , but really you're right , they protect it so painful . I'm so sorry .

Speaker 2

But they , it's force of habit . But yeah , no , they did protect that beautiful moment and we don't need to know , we just know . No , that's what you whisper to your best friend when he comes off the field .

Game Recap and Emotional Resolutions

Speaker 3

Now I have to say , the next little moment put me on a little bit of a roller coaster , because you go to these guys in the stands , the old knucklehead buddies .

Speaker 2

And one of them is bug and one of them is the other guy , right ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , yeah , bug . Yeah , exactly , Bill Go or Bill Bow , something crazy sounding like that . But anyway , his dad would have been proud And I was like , oh shit , that's why he hasn't heard from his dad . His dad is dead . Me too , same thing .

Speaker 2

His dad is dead . I was like , oh shit , his dad died , yeah .

Speaker 3

But then we find out , nope , not that his dad died , his dad went to rehab . And you can't help but wonder was his rock bottom ?

Speaker 2

that moment I thought you were gonna go with the joke That's . there's such an obvious that joke where everyone goes like oh , i thought I was dead , but I was just in Arkansas , you know , whatever , like you know .

Speaker 3

I thought that was good . No , I was just in Manchester .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , no , is that what it was ? It was rehab , right .

Speaker 3

It looked like it to me . That was my read of the space . Now maybe I'm projecting some other stuff , but that was what I read That was how . I read that space .

Speaker 2

The mom , the unnamed Jamie mom , was like he'll never fucking change .

Speaker 3

Yeah , and that's the other reason I thought because , right , like , how beautiful is that in the context of this show that the most like you almost felt like if you bumped into that man you would stick , Like it was just like ugh , Yeah , oh yeah .

And the show says , no , we're not just gonna judge this man , Like he probably has some stuff he needs to work through And that's what he's doing And we'll see . And maybe That was like 10th .

Speaker 2

Last time we just- .

Speaker 1

Oh my God , yeah , i was like I read it was just like wow , He's giving it a redemption art too .

Speaker 2

That guy I'm like oh , my God Jesus .

Speaker 3

They're not leaving any stone unturned .

Speaker 2

No .

Speaker 3

And it's not like he's all cleaned up now And yeah , i've been working at the . No , it's like he's looking kind of a mess And his beard is all grown out , but apparently he's trying to get his life together on some level And you go , maybe , maybe .

Speaker 2

Well , the game is not over until right after that , But he looks , he was . I mean , the dad looked so proud of Jamie , Yeah that was nice And that's good , That was a beautiful moment . Man City tries to go one final desperate , which you do . You just throw everything forward . Some piddly little shot that goes .

Van Damme , like yawning , saves it And that's it . Three whistles and it's full time . He falls all year And that's yeah , there's a whole big delay thing . They do at the end of the game Like take your sweet time . Oh , i have to fall on this , okay . So then we get the moment with Pep and they really love Pep . This show loves Pep .

He's like a legend and you know , there's this nice beat where Pep says you know exactly the last , so away back to Ted , and it's a really nice moment . And then Ted turns around like him and Beard just totally fanboy , like it's so excited .

Speaker 3

That's awesome . That's awesome Because I mean think about it like the way they've talked about Pep this whole time . I mean it would be in the Disney version of my life , like somebody hands me an NFL franchise and I like beat like Bella check in the Super Bowl or something . I mean it's like it's crazy . I would love that .

Speaker 2

So what , i think you can do it . You know I've been telling you for years like you can do it . So then we get a nice also not small with Pep , where he and Jamie have a little moment together and grabs around the neck , and that's like a very European thing that I love . There's a bunch of things that Europeans do .

If you're used to just watching , like NFL players or you know like , just you know like ogres from North America , and then you see , sometimes you see like soccer players , like kiss each other and you're like holy shit Like it's so different . Yeah , and I love it . I just love it .

Speaker 3

What's going on ? That's beautiful , Right . I thought the moment with Pep where I'm digging too far into it , it felt to me like he was saying the vibe I got was you have done a lot of going on , Absolutely .

Speaker 2

No , no , no , no no .

Speaker 3

That was the vibe I got .

Speaker 2

And that made me .

Speaker 3

I projected that maybe with , but it felt like you know what I mean , like I've coached guys who then I see them and they're doing this or but that is . You know . Oh yeah , that's a big P . I don't know . I could feel the energy there of like okay .

Speaker 2

Yeah , i'm proud of you . I guess you're not the knucklehead who walked out of here .

Speaker 1

You've done really well .

Speaker 2

Good job , i get it I see I see , this is who we always knew you could be . It's great to see .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Thanks , Pep .

Speaker 3

Mm-hmm .

Speaker 2

All right , zipping through the end here , back on the bus . Fat bottom girls plays . He knew it was coming .

Speaker 3

Right , that's fun .

Speaker 2

Back in the locker room , isaac says Hey , we got one game left , which is great exposition . Make sure you have a water with every drink you have , which is always good . good advice Stay hydrated . Everybody taps bumps , fist bumps , slaps Jamie on the way out . Everybody , everybody , shakes hands with Jamie .

Speaker 3

I loved it , And he uses the word love at least three times in that little sequence And I was like Oh , it's coming , it's coming . No , no , no , no , you're right .

Speaker 2

And he says to Colin like he really pulled aside , like you played , like unbelievable , like really it was so authentic , so genuine . And then he says Mm-hmm , yeah . He says proud , yes . And then , proud of him , he says to remember he was so , so threatened by getting a new ace , the second ace , danny Rojas . And he says big love , amigo to .

Danny Rojas I was . I'm actually going to miss me thinking about it right now . I'm like , oh my God , Like what ? It was great Yeah .

Speaker 3

Who is this guy ?

Speaker 2

It's like unbelievable , you fucking came . Amazing , amazing , oh God , it's so good Jesus . And it's like very color by numbers , these things like it's almost like now that you've seen it , you're like , well , we were headed here all along . Obviously it's this one . I say color by numbers , that's not to demean the show .

That's like it all played , it like feels like this was an inevitability somehow , based on every part of the lasso way and Jamie's willingness to do it and how it all played out , and it just feels right , mm-hmm , now we get a 10 beard in the office . 10 does the thing where he , you know , horn swaddles beard . He just he just entraps him .

He is all his full Colombo bullshit . Aw , shucks , you know , you know present it .

Speaker 1

Right , hey , oh , look at that .

Speaker 2

And beard does a Roy at the end of it . You know , Ted walks out and beard says fuck , Mm-hmm . Now we get Jamie in the training room and he texts his dad That's big coach , That is , that is . That is huge .

Speaker 3

It's like the distance from you know theoretical forgiveness or not even theoretical , but like just my personal forgiveness in my heart to basically hey how you doing That's a fair amount of ground and cover . That was a good one .

Speaker 2

We're gonna see Jamie and his dad have a resolution next episode . I'm confident of it . I think we're gonna have like a scene .

Speaker 3

Oh my God , i'm not ready . I'm glad you just said that , because I didn't think about it and I will need to be erased , because if that moment is anything like I'm thinking it could be , oh my God , i'll be a puddle .

Speaker 2

I will be able to . All I think is like I don't think it should be verbal . I think it should be closer to Nate and Jade's dinners , but it should like if it's part of a montage at the very end where he helps his dad walk out of the rehab and get to a car or something . that's all you need to see . You know what I mean , but it's gonna kill me .

So just a little fair warning The podcast will be ending after next week because I will not make it through .

Speaker 1

I'm telling you , I might not make it through anyway .

Speaker 2

My heart , this is like the grinch My heart's growing . This is rough 10 times the size . It's just so beautiful . Yeah , so you text , and Keely and Roy come in and it's so . God , what a different vibe . And it's very . I'm still not . I'm not sure what's happening if these three are not becoming best friends .

I don't know what the triangle here is , coach , i don't get it .

Speaker 3

Yeah , but it's definitely a triangle and they all enjoy being a part of it . Right , And Jamie's like I'm with you .

Speaker 2

I'm not sure either , He's like oh , did I look sexy out there or something . And Roy's like it's a shame you didn't get hit in the head . I'm like this is fantastic , like that's what you say to your best friend , that's what we would say to each other Absolutely . It's crazy . Little , tiny little scene with Nate and Jade . She brings some food home .

Someone's at the door , he walks out and it's fucking Friday the 13th or whatever . He's like whoa , it's like it's so funny because he knew this talking about inevitability .

Speaker 3

Someday , yeah , someday , i'm gonna have to face it .

Speaker 1

You hear that , Mr Anderson .

Speaker 2

Right , that's the sound of inevitability , inevitability . You know , at some point , beard , i thought it would be Roy , but I thought it'd be Roy red roping it . but beard is coming for you . You know what I mean . There is a Oh yeah , it's like a . there's a line in the ledger and the grim reaper has to fill . You know , you just go .

Speaker 3

This is it . I mean , it's funny you use that language , because what does Nate say when he opens up ? but are you ?

Speaker 2

here to kill me .

Speaker 3

You're here to kill me .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I really think he I'm telling you .

Speaker 3

I think that was on the table right .

Speaker 2

Yes , No , the looks they gave him on the sidelines Wasn't just beard it was Roy too .

Speaker 1

That's why it was a surprise that Roy had moved on because you just go .

Speaker 2

Oh my , i think , roy . My feeling is that if Roy wasn't so freaked out trying to fix Jamie , he may have had more of a . You know what That's like distracted ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , he was . Yeah , he had his hands full at that point .

Yeah , he's good at the part I suck at which , by the way we have seen , is also not true , and it does lend itself to a bit of our wizard of Oz thinking not necessarily that this is like specifically the cow or the lion , you know whatever , but that idea , like he holds on to that scarecrowish idea that he's not smart .

Meanwhile , crazy as it seemed , there was something in his gut that allowed him to understand that Jamie was supposed to be in the middle of that formation . Yes , And he wanted , right .

So like he's got more going on there than he thinks Similar to Ted , by the way , who you know up until that barbecue sauce moment would sit there and try to read a chapter or two of the books and you know , sort of wonder at everybody who understood the off-sides rule .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's very true In this moment . As soon as he opens the door , he says you know , tell me . And Beard launches right into the story . It is a , it is a . Oh my God , this is a tour de force by Brendan Hunt . What a speech , what a soliloquy . What a moment .

Really funny also , though , where he's like this is a lot of happen yes , it is , it's what it really means . And he says I stole a loaf of meth instead of a loaf of bread . A loaf of bread , yeah . And then he says so I choose to forgive you . This is powerful . I mean , this is real .

Speaker 3

I know I'm just gliding past it , Because I mean , if you can't , I mean I almost feel like it would be a disservice to the speech to do a quick version of it Pass version .

Speaker 1

yeah .

Speaker 3

Anyone who saw the episode knows the speech we're talking about . There will be there will be a lot of conversation about this speech , about what it means , about our understanding why we ended up with two people . Remember , if one person goes on where it was it , or one go , one pilgrim and you have .

Speaker 2

Yes when you have two is Yeah , what the pilgrimage right , yeah , right .

Speaker 3

So that's how this became a pilgrimage is he owes Ted everything And he will always be this devoted to Ted because what we found out And yeah , i gotta say , it was so much more than I would have ever expected that story to be their sort of origin story And I appreciated that .

I appreciated that it wasn't just like so I bumped this fender and I didn't leave a note Like I just think , like it was like whoa like this is a lot .

Speaker 2

How about the fact that they were both kickers ?

Speaker 3

I thought that was very interesting and where they ended up , I sort of I smiled at that . Yeah , a kicker and a punter and they end up coaching soccer in the end .

Speaker 2

Well , listen , we are punter . Ted was the punter , beard is the kicker

Redemption and Forgiveness in Ted Lasso

. I was thinking left leg this way , right leg , not so good , punters have that crazy one leg . You know what I'm saying ?

Speaker 1

I know , i know Yes thank you , coach , oh my . God Right , right Because he was a punter .

Speaker 3

Oh my God , that's why he said it not so good , because that's not the his kicking leg gets as high as the fucking sky . Yep , yep that's how it works . I know I'm telling you , my God , they do not make shows like this , coach .

Speaker 2

I've said it a thousand times it's too hard , nobody can do it . Wow , this fucking actor can try to pull off this fucking actor . Anyway , amazing , absolutely amazing . So , yes , there's a great , the whole thing is great , this is amazing .

And then , similarly to Beard and Roy , after they fucked up with the Nate video and wanted Ted to beat them , yes , coach , nathan says you want to headbutt me .

Speaker 1

I think it makes . I think , oh yeah , i'm flying See what happens when we finally get rid of boss and get a word in edge wise .

Speaker 2

I think it might make us feel better , not , it may make you feel better ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , I quite that Right , Because he felt like he needed penance . I need to . Yeah , I want somebody to punch me in the face .

Speaker 2

Beautiful moment . Beard turns his hat . He thinks shit , is he gonna headbutt him ? They lock forehead . Monday 10 am . Nate also says that there's a beautiful thank you in there as well , and a huge hug and then a bigger hug Like a hug , and then a Yeah and then a and then like an Ola Ola , like full body , like we are brothers .

Speaker 3

And I thought it called . I thought it . we saw progression because of that Higgins moment in the parking lot .

And there's two moments now where you might think like all right , we know he's capable of violence Like you just know what your heart Beard is , capable of some violence And two times that we thought it might go that way he actually ends up hugging the other person .

Speaker 2

Well , now I can hazard a few guesses , what the extra fucking axes are for too , You know . And then I was like wait , is Nate Javert , is he the one who had Valjean Jean Valjean wrong the whole time ? And you know what I mean . And like , only at the final moment did he realize like , oh my God , it was me the whole time . I don't know .

I thought it was interesting . I'll have to look back and think about it . Now we're back . That was a beautiful moment And , by the way , we go around the corner and Jade is very pleased , and you know .

Speaker 3

And eating a kebab , which I thought because we saw Rebecca doing that I'm gonna . When I rewatched , i thought it was interesting .

Speaker 2

I saw that too , yeah .

Speaker 3

You know what I mean . It's like huh , Except she fumbled it into her mouth .

Speaker 2

She wasn't like .

Speaker 3

Yeah , she was a snore .

Speaker 2

But Rebecca was like like the teeth and you just go . Oh my , she slid it off like a Amazon . You're like damn girl .

Speaker 1

It was a myth .

Speaker 2

And Jade kind of fumbled it into her mouth .

Speaker 3

Just make sure you use your incognito window coach , because I were feeling I know where things are headed with you in this kebab situation .

Speaker 2

That's like I'm gonna be Googling NSFW .

Speaker 1

Yes , all right .

Speaker 2

Beautiful women teething kebab ? Damn , i can't find I'm stuck with it With unreachable kink . Yeah . So now it was nice for Jade to have that little moment , and I can't believe this . That can't believe that sentence would ever come out of my mouth . I know , but it worked .

Speaker 3

That I mean .

Speaker 2

Last by the way .

Speaker 3

I feel like we kept going he's gotta do redemption , he's gotta do his redemption And on some level I think we did get some of it and we knew that . He knew he was wrong . But I thought the show then came back at us and said we don't have to make him pay , we don't have to make him pay . And we and I wanted to make him pay .

I wanted to , i wanted him to take that bowl of shit and eat it because he deserved it . And I feel like the show was like we don't have to make him pay , like if , if , if he needs to , you know , let Will know . He's sorry , then he should do that , but it's not . We're not here to punish him . It's about giving him a chance to make it right .

And I I yeah , that's challenging for me on some level , man , that you know , because I'm like no , you gotta pay the motherfucker price .

Speaker 2

Oh , yeah , yeah , yeah . No for you , that's not . You got a code Oh .

Speaker 1

I know , seriously , there was a cost Now , yeah , yeah , very sorry , but there is a definitive cost for your actions .

Speaker 3

These are the rules . Yeah , so yeah , this is this . this impacted me .

Speaker 2

Yeah , it was a beautiful moment . Finally we're , we are over to back to Ted's flat . We get seen with his mom He's really testy And then we get to thank you fuck , you've seen coming in with your son misses you .

And a beautiful piece of acting by Sudeikis Saying I know he's going to leave , i , i , i , i hesitated to get close to the boy That that is like whoo you can hold , do a whole , i should have said that with that , yeah , yeah , yeah . Mom says all we can do is keep playing . You know , it's not every win .

Well , it's a lot of ties , i'll just keep playing .

Ted Lasso Plot Speculation

I think , if I remember correctly , there was like a podcast host who said just got to keep showing up . Who was that guy ? I swear .

Speaker 3

It's he's failure . It was this past week .

Speaker 2

I mean you just just said it , just said it Yeah .

Speaker 3

Just said it .

Speaker 2

Um , she says fuck you to him and he goes . Oh my goodness .

Speaker 3

Yeah , that's what he , that's what all crystallizes , Like oh , I just said fuck you like 75 times to my mother . Oh , what was ?

Speaker 2

what was it ? But you know it was funny .

Speaker 3

You know , what's funny He said in Amsterdam . He said I got a drink . Like you want to drink a couple bottles of wine and yell at your mother .

Speaker 2

I remember I thought that was a real specific thing to say Yeah , yeah , yeah , right , oh shit , i forgot about that , damn .

Speaker 3

But at the time I was like huh , that's a real specific . I don't know what I would have said in his place , like getting a fight or get punched in the face or whatever . Like it's still , it's crazy . But like I got it , i was like I know what that is . Well , you're just like I don't care , i'll just feel something .

But that that one was specific and I think it had to do what we just saw .

Speaker 2

Oh man , jesus Christ , we're going to have to deep dive , the feel something at some point , jesus . I know , I know this exists , I think I just feel too much . And so I'm always like no , I need to feel less of anything , Jesus Christ . I mean , I'm sobbing in my living room at Verizon commercials .

Speaker 3

I'm like God damn it .

Speaker 2

So , so brutal . But yeah , i don't know , this is , this is we're going to have to talk about that . This is the moment we talked about . He says you know what ? I'm sorry , i used to sit down and I'll serve you . She's like whoa , wait till she hears about this . And then I like he's like you know what ? let's start with the wine .

Speaker 3

Yes , And she agrees .

Speaker 1

She goes yeah , that's great .

Speaker 3

In my , in my imaginings , they drink half a bottle too much each and have like the most . How do you know howdy duty joke telling slash love fest ever like . They just lean into how they are together And this is .

Speaker 2

Flanders Fest 2020 .

Speaker 3

Yes , Like a total breaking into random songs . Yeah , the people are stomping upstairs The whole deal , finishing each other's puns . Torture .

Speaker 2

In other words , my personal hell . But yes , no , that's a you really . Yeah , you can see it and you hope that that's what it was . We got to knock at Rebecca's door . She opens it up and who pray tell ? is there coach ?

Speaker 3

I guess , which . I anticipated a Bex Rebecca meeting of some sort . I didn't know if it was going to be . They saw each other out in the street and something was said . But then Beck says , yeah , can we come in ? Can we come in and guess who's next to Bex cakes ? And guess what ? If you are Rupert , you are fucked . I don't know what happened .

I don't know . Yeah , but you are a big trouble , friend . You know what ? These three women haven't known meeting at all .

So I don't know what's going to happen next week , but I think it's not going to be good for Rupert And I think that Nate quit because Rupert was going to ask him or Rupert did ask him or was going to ask him to lie about what he saw , and that that's why he ended up leaving West Ham .

Speaker 2

Yeah , you're probably right . I haven't thought about what it was . I find them less interested .

Speaker 1

Now that .

Speaker 2

I've had my big moment where they I guess . No , no , i guess they haven't wanted all yet I'm still . I'm still holding out , for I thought they would do West Ham second and Man City last and that would be the big whatever . So but yeah , no , i'm still holding out for that . But I will say , bex looks like an absolute knockout .

Rebecca opens the door she is so stunningly beautiful And there's Bex and she looks like the best I've ever seen . I was like holy mackerel . she's attractive . And then remember how afraid of Miss Kakes I've been and living in the mortal terror of Kakes . So as soon as the reveal was , she was behind the door .

I was like oh , she's just very beautiful and was not scared of her anymore . Somehow , like the vibe was totally different And I was like God , she's so , she is so pretty And I'm like , oh , you know , this is like the . This is the A plot for what ? like half a dozen movies about men getting They're gonna go get it .

But still , like we got really giddy about the moments between Bex and Rebecca Such a weird thing that this show was able to pull off . And then I accepted this like , like seamlessly . I was like , oh , I missed . Oh so Miss Kakes and Bex Are like in this together , Like yep , Okay , Like , okay , Like fully on board , Wasn't like well ?

Speaker 3

that's a little far-fetched .

Speaker 2

And I'm like nope , Totally .

Speaker 3

No , not at all . I bought it completely And I think Rebecca Rebecca's beating the big boss in this game , Like she has been . She like JB got his mountaintop moment , Rebecca got her mountaintop moment .

And I think it's really interesting that they're like , yeah , this the patriarchy has , has really been beaten up on us , And they're like you know , you know who we got to go see , right , Right , I don't know , There's something very cool about that to me that they , like they , show up at her door , I mean in the spirit of the Wizard of Oz , I mean right ,

I mean they , they , they show up . You know we're here to see the great and powerful slayer of the patriarchy Right , oh man .

Speaker 2

That's that's worth exploring . Yeah , That will put it on the deep side .

Speaker 3

Yeah , Rebecca's going to take it in the , in the nads , as they say . I mean he's going to , he's going to Queen of the Buttercups .

Speaker 2

may may get her way . She may get that .

Speaker 1

Remember , uh , uh yeah , Jen was like oh , I want to see Beck's own Weston . Oh my God , Oh my God .

Speaker 2

Certainly looks like it could be in that direction .

Speaker 3

That's almost too good . That's , that's almost too good . Wow , wow I don't know if I , I don't know if I can allow myself to kind of happiness .

Speaker 2

No , no , no , no , we're not , we're not going to like yeah , well , let's , let's , we'll stay . We'll stay up and lie down and see , um , where it goes . Now we , uh , we got a Freddie Mercury song playing over . I haven't identified it yet . Ted wakes up , mom's gone . Leaves him a nice note Um , we've got a .

You know , you definitely there is something to your religious , uh , iconography here , because we've had fishes , loaves and wine .

Speaker 1

Right Touch Wow .

Speaker 2

There's a little wink wink for all the uh Judeo Christians in the listening audience And now we go to uh , Ted going into work , Rebecca's in the office . It's half nine . They say that just to annoy Americans . Now it's the time of the year for the big truth ball , the big reveal , And here it is . This is when they just like she leans in .

She brushes her nose against his neck . She says I'm always ready to get with you .

Speaker 1

Oh wait no that's not what happened .

Speaker 3

What happened ?

Speaker 2

coach .

Speaker 3

Uh , i got nothing . I got nothing . I got no truth bomb this year , and I will highlight that they are in reverse positions from where they were in the first two seasons . Uh and and uh . Ted ends the episode by saying I got one . Now . I believe that means Ted's headed back to Kansas .

Um , would make all the sense in the world to me , um , but I leave open the , the idea that they would think that I would think that and that they're going to go somewhere else .

I mean , i , certainly they , you , i have been screaming at this thing that they screwed up the Nate storyline , and then we got to that moment with beard and I was like you , sons of bitches , yeah , see what ?

Speaker 2

happens when you have skill on your running staff coach .

Speaker 3

I mean my God , i mean they just walked me into that shot . I mean they just walked me into it , yep .

Speaker 2

And all of us who were totally unwilling . I was satisfied with the amount , whatever they did , whether they built up him owning , saying wonder kid , for the second time , wrote , wrote it to Will and then owning it . Yeah , i did say wonder kid , that's him totally on it , saying it was all my fault .

Um , respecting Ted by saying no , i can't come back when he finds that Ted didn't do it , It wasn't a part of it . Yeah , and then offering , like saying thank you , opening being available to be killed by beard , being available to be head butted by beard . It was , it was enough Crazy , but I was like okay , yeah , i'm good , i'm more than good .

Speaker 3

He's going to walk in there on Monday at 10 am and my feeling is Nate the great's back .

Speaker 2

I don't know for sure . Yes , that's back . I don't know for sure anything , except I know we're going to have the final shot be of Ted's face And I picture him . I was like , is it going to be him ? We just have one shot of him , you know . Like you know , he's looking at the J Hawks play , like he's the new coach , the I don't know .

Speaker 3

I was like it's like you know , i'm like where does he end ?

Speaker 2

up . Where does he end up Like , where is that ?

Speaker 3

I assumed on the plane . I thought , well , I'm not assumed but I guess plain . but I like that , that we see his new program , that he's going to the new , the new Yeah .

Speaker 1

Like the .

Speaker 2

Casey soccer team .

Speaker 1

Is it the ?

Speaker 3

you know , i don't know Like yeah , he'd be a big old , like seriously , if he did this , like this happened , and he came back to the United States , i mean I would guess that he'd get pretty much any job he wanted . I mean , right , i mean you just won in the Premier League and now not .

I shouldn't , i shouldn't count those chickens before they hatch , but it feels like we're headed to winning the whole fucking thing .

Speaker 2

The yeah , if they want to make money , you just show him a hat and you see him quickly just like touch his shoulder , rub his elbow and you go oh , he's the new manager of the Royals , or whatever . That'd be amazing , Yeah , I mean , like you know , you just go , oh , and now he's going to conquer a baseball , or you're thinking you know whatever .

Anyway , i think it's . That's the only thing I know we're getting . I know we're getting that , but I wonder about yeah if it's on the plane that makes sense , because that's where we found him the first time on the way back Kind of reading a book about a man on a voyage seeking truth . Yes , god damn , what a beautiful show .

I can't believe there's only one more episode left Dharma Bones , baby Man . this is heavy . It's heavy too . It feels like . just feels heavier than the end of another show . but beautiful beautiful stuff . Coach , where do people find you if they want to find you ?
