I can't breathe . We are . We are doing our rapid response . I'm sure I'll start to call it a rapid reaction . The key element is that , as long as you get the sense of like a network TV 911 call , that we're on the job early .

actually I think it's very important in this case to at least start with almost no structure and let's just fanboy and just dig into whatever we loved about it And then yeah . So yeah , i don't know that I can disagree with that . I thought so many things that happened were exactly what we were told was going to happen And yet it was stunning .

Jesus , i guess . So Oh my . God , I did not connect that at all Jesus .

We spent a lot of time talking about . You know our various burdens we carry around every day . We both have ADHD . I forgot to mention that Boss is not with us on this episode , totally hilarious .

But for me I said I need them to beat Man City , needs them to beat pep , absolutely need it , need to see it , and so for me that was that was pretty great , and seeing Jamie become Roy Kent .

I was thinking had that poster on his wall his whole life , so so weird that he ends up with Keely and Ryan . that's craziness . If I was his mom I'd be like what is happening ?

But Providence , that's what's happening .

Yeah , well listen we'll get into that For sure , if you , if you see Roy Kent , and we know what this is . there are players . it doesn't matter the sport , they just become beloved because some , you know some , some ethereal toughness or you know great how they carry themselves whatever it is .

I mean his home stadium .

That was against him , right ?

I mean it's just , yeah , i was well , now that you just said that , it reminds me of Henry running out onto the field and listen and being showered with wanker And it sounding very different now And it was a beloved you know wanker being chanted by the end of the game . I believe that was balls , was that ? was that episode .

Would you say Henry , running out onto the field ?

Henry running out to Ted . Oh , Henry ran out to Ted and he threw him up on his shoulder And they were yelling wanker . But at the end of the game it sounded a lot different than the beginning of the game And so I thought , you know even that , even that , as you were describing , i went Oh my God , they even echoed that .

We are toyed with you . Oh , oh , oh . I mean , the last scene is how you're talking about that . Oh I thought they were . This is so funny . There was like something you know . So for Game of Thrones there was book readers and show watchers and you know , sometimes both And the book readers were very invested .

They flip sides .

Yeah .

Yeah , which I thought was very interesting . Yes , that they had they flip sides .

Yes , what is what's Ted's bomb Coach ? what's he ?

gonna say I mean I , i . I believe he is going to say he is going back to Kansas . Yeah , that's what I believe . I believe they will win the whole fucking thing as promised , and he will do what so few get to do . He will now do for the second time in a row He will take everyone to the mountaintop and then say gotta go .

Walk off home run .

Yep , that's what I think . I feel like they've teed it up so beautifully that , yes , you could cross me there . You could definitely be like head fake me here , and then next week it's no , he's staying and whatever . But it almost feels too perfect , like if he , because I kept thinking will .

Right . Yes , you pointed that out many times and you've never been wrong about it .

So I think that's where it's going And I but I think so far beautifully done .

Including that woman at the store who was like you're sure you're all right And now she's all good luck today . Like she's like . She's like his best friend And he's unchanged Right . Like he's changed , but like in terms of how he deals with people . That's how you always dealt with them When they were being shitty to them .

Yes , yeah .

Great , i really liked that . And then , yeah , when he came back and said , mom , i thought this episode was going to bring us Jamie's mom because it was Man City And I thought but I did not see . You know , i never read anything or look at anything ahead of time , so I didn't think , i didn't think , i didn't know that it was going to be Ted's mom .

You can't read right , Is that quite ?

That's mostly part of it . It takes me quite sometimes At Yale .

Reading wasn't a thing at Yale . Really weird .

A lot of drawing pictures , you know . But you and boss were on it . You know that that was . You know that's where it was headed And yeah , she was perfect . Oh my God , i was like this is great . I bet the . I bet . What the writers did literally was just write Ted dialogue and it would just have it come out of her mouth .

I mean when that's that was so funny . We'll get to that as we zip through this , but the moment when Rebecca realizes like she's like oh my God you're so funny . Like a bad joke about a bodyguard . She's like wait what ?

There it is , Yeah , Yeah She's like oh , that was a , she saw that real quick . When she says , she comes out , she's .

I you have met . You know , i can't believe the person who we got to go . We'll go in order , but she's like oh , i've met one of the nicest people ever . I was like there's no Ted Bekah .

People Like you don't say that , no , you don't say that about some guy , you about it .

Charming , very nice person You're a real sweetie pie She wants to get in his pants .

So hard . Yeah , I think I feel bad . I know a lot of people were .

I was not rooting for him . I said it was not my thing .

Yeah . But , I wasn't rooting for it . I thought , if they did it I guess that was , that was in my my 60s VW van you know character because I sort of felt like I I have so enjoyed this that I'm sure that if you put them together you will make me ever very least smile and go .

I get it . Oh yeah , now they would have . They would have had they chosen . Listen , who knows , maybe they will in the final episode .

But that was me talking about headfakes , Yeah sure Doesn't feel like it .

but I was thinking so much of your personal life . your defining characteristic has been barely contained rage And right . And for you to now become a guy who's like a flower child , he's like Hey man , he's so mental .

Jamie for me , because I kept saying he is the poster child . But I thought I had seen , i mean , what they did for me , what they did brilliantly and we'll you know , we'll get to the specifics but I thought we had reached the crescendo . I thought we had reached the top of the crescendo for Jamie when he went to the board , so I'd kind of like relaxed .

I was balling . I was like whoa , whoa , whoa , i just let it all come out . I felt relieved I felt . I was proud of him , you know yeah , yeah , that's how I felt too . Yeah , but they were , they were . they were ripping him to shreds , like they were . like you know , pep was like listen , make him , make him pay . I'll never forget .

Yes .

They said there's too many . Bill Belichick takes away one player He can take away your best player , whoever that is , but they had Kurt Warner , tori Holt , isaac Bruce . Marshall Falk coming out of the back .

Yeah .

Mark , Hall of Famers everywhere . Kurt Warner slinging it like no one had ever slung it Right The greatest show on turf .

And what happened was I thought Keem was my dude on there .

Yeah , I was like just an absolute human rocket . Right Who you got . Okay , fine , take one away , we have this other guy Right . And what they did was they made poor Marshall Falk . any time he touched that ball , they annihilated it . They hit him so hard It was like a textbook murder every time .

And then , after a while , you're like yeah , maybe throw it to someone else .

I don't you know what I mean . It's just this crazy .

I don't want the ball . Yeah , no , no .

And so that's how this pepper's like listen . James got to pay . I know he's their best player . He is clearly the conductor of this orchestra .

Make him earn every pass Yeah .

Yep , and it could have worked . It was awfully close to like I think he did what he had to do and I get you know . but it I felt like during that game I felt like , oh God , like he's not gonna , he's not gonna make some mistake , that's gonna be like . I was like oh boy , oh boy . I was I did feel a little . Yeah , I was a little tense .

Yes , Yes , exactly right , exactly right Either times where you should actually come off . You know that thing where if you work in a certain industry , you can see all the strings and all the wires behind the seat . You know , sometimes for people who've written for television , for film , you watch a movie and you can't unsee certain .

So , yeah , no , that was and also to encourage the strategy . Oh yeah , you start complaining , It's game over .

I'm sure .

I'm gonna tell you about the time that my coach had me boxing one night . kid , i'm in basketball .

Yeah , i think I was . Yeah , it was my freshman year And so this kid had lit us up . So he was like you're , you're , we're gonna box on one and you're gonna play this kid . And , oh my God , like when it was the opening tip , i walked over to their huddle .

Yeah right , but yeah , his , his coach had to take him out . He was so upset He's getting so upset on the court There's his coach had to take him out the game . So so when they were doing that , i was like , okay , jamie , keep your head , keep your head . But he did .

Wow , wow , yeah , you drive me nuts too . 30 motherfucking years of this .

Yeah , it's enough .

I don't get this close . That's , that's . I don't have that gear , i don't know . No , no , no , no , no , no , no . Wait , maybe actually in hockey . Yeah , i would do a little chippy in hockey , yeah .

Yeah , yeah , yeah . But just like to draw penalties and stuff like that I would draw . I would draw a lot of penalties . I would get a lot of people punching me . I'm not surprised anybody .

You know what I mean Like that's funny You know , like the guy was like yeah , i was , like I was a guy already . I don't think I'm a good enough talker to like whatever in the moment .

But yeah , there would definitely be like whistle , blow someone , be in my face And I just like what . You got something to say Bam , they hit me . Okay , there you go . There it is . There's a power play , we'll take it , yeah . so that might be a little bit of a . sometimes when you hear me mess up , it could just be the concussions talking .

So that's really funny . So so I will . We will bring the rapid right after this , But don't you ? you said chippy , And I feel like you had a hockey story that you killed me with at one point with that was based on that quality .

Yeah , yeah , It wasn't the one that was a . I was playing for this traveling team . I used to get recruited because a real good goal scorer , but I'm short .

And , and my name's Thor , And so I would get I would get , i would get I was they called a ringer . I don't know if like that's a term . You , you know the term ringer like yeah , i don't know if that's a common term . Whatever they would say like , oh , we're going to bring in a ringer , and so there was all these tracks . It's very different now .

They're expecting somebody like blonde blocks , and yeah , they're like it was .

So every time I walked in I'm like Hey , i'm Thor . They're like Is this a joke ? Are you fucking like ?

Seriously And so yeah , but I would , i would definitely get you know .

You know what that is .

A rat tail that little , yeah , like the little brain kind of down the back Like a dad on tuxedo And I was like you know what , like anyway , third period , all tied up , and he was he had been just hacking at me all day Butt ends , which are totally illegal .

And that was it Like so yes , that was not but that was very unfair , but that guy had it coming Right Right .

I love too that . Probably because he was that guy , there was no way anybody was going to suspect for a second that he hadn't actually done it .

It's like why would you do that ? Do control yourself , And I'm like yeah , man why , I can't believe you did that .

All right , so we have Ted walking through Richmond . You said carbon copy the story . The pet after the panic attacks . We still get the lanker guy , all these little beats .

And now the joke really is between them . Like the joke , you know , is like oh , which you know what , what streak , like that's it . Now they're good . He flips them off and they're good , it's great .

Yeah , and I can't . You know like it's , it's , they're doing this thing , that is so . God , it's hanging the Hockney , backup It's . You feel like you're cared for somehow . I don't know why . That , at least for me , i'm like . You respect your audience . You respect our intelligence . We know the Hockney came down Now . We know the Hockney went back up .

I mean I wonder if the reactions would have been the same .

Yeah , oh , it's a longer episodes because an actor you know , it's not not Bill Lawrence being , you know , having tight episodes or whatever . It's such a demeaning oh , i'm so an actor , i'm sorry , oh right Pardon me . I'm a person who does this profession . I'm like okay , this was a . You know ?

I mean , there was some quality acting Right , yeah .

Yeah , so yes , we got the walkthrough , everything's good . And then mom and she says hey , teddy , teddy and Teddy , so that's great .

right there , by the way , she's sitting where Beard was sitting when Ted got there .

Yeah , that's where beard was sitting .

That's where beard went Yeah when he said I guess you well , no , i'm saying on that morning when , with the story from Trent , he said you heard , i guess you know what that's all about , right , and he said no , and then he walks away and you see he has a newspaper in his back pocket . He knew , but he knew that Ted needs to talk about it .

Wasn't that also the bench where , when Henry and Michelle drove away , yeah , beard was waiting .

Yeah , that bench is important , i think .

Bossis sat on that bench .

I think She definitely visited , that That might be right . Yes , yes , i feel like that's right , she's definitely the most diehard Lasso fan here in the team . I'm missing , boss , but come on , here we go .

Oh yeah , no , not me . So we get to open credits and heaven knows , i tried and all of a sudden , boom coach , where are we ?

Taste of Athens . And we walk with Jade and guess who's working as a waiter at Taste of Athens . But good old Nathan .

Good old Captain Gray Brows .

That was like listen .

I'm not going to mock very much about this episode because I adored it , but those eyebrows were like when you first look you ever I don't know . Were you the theater , were you a theater kid ?

Not really , not really .

Not really . I was because I'm inauthentic and I wanted to be other people .

The patriarchy , and you know I've yeah , so that mentioned seemed like , yep , we're wrapping things up here , folks .

Yes , and Jade's funny , see , we didn't know this . Later on she says I don't listen , this is the fast , this is the fast . You know we're zipping through this , so I don't have every one . But when Nate's out back , she's up front .

Yeah , she said we don't for half an hour and we need to go wait , not here . Wow , okay , damn .

I wish we kind of had a line on this type of like , whatever her personality was . That dry sort of . This is an interesting choice , because Colin leading the pack wasn't Isaac Isaac's the captain , but Colin was leading And Colin was the one that we always bark about .

Yeah , that's pretty significant .

Right , that has to be what they were doing . That's the , that's the mechanisms , that's why ?

how else do you launch that conversation ? I mean , how , like ? why would anybody ?

Yeah , but that's why they should will being here in this thing Like it was like , okay , he's , you know , he's on board and he's told everyone . And this saves us from having the scene of you know , redemption with Colin . It just goes okay , whatever , whatever , whatever .

Mathematics , colin had to do to forgive Nate .

He's done because he's asking him back . I thought that was pretty clever actually . Also , i it's not .

I guess this isn't mine the call , but I wondered his , his being able to be his full self now Does he feel less like a cheap painting ? So what was said to him feels different to You know what I mean .

Yeah , actually right , Yeah , because he was playing not as well as he could , wasn't really ? playing potential that that may have resonated more or felt like it rang true , Whereas now something like that is like whatever man , i'm like a good , i'm a really good player .

Well , that hasn't happened yet . coach , i love your time travel . No , it's good . Beard is gone and he looks around , and then he looks up .

You're right . Wow , that's nice coach , nice .

Remember that , yeah , yeah , and I was like , yeah , i mean , you're right , it's exactly , that's a direct line to this exact thing .

To this moment . Yeah , to this moment . That's great . Yeah , i liked . I liked that they thought in a way in the regular world that we're aware of , this is true that no way a guy was just at West Ham and within you know weeks he's a waiter . like something went horrendously wrong .

what do you mean ? he's a waiter Right , yeah .

You know . So I appreciated that they went there And also that Isaac agreed with Anastasia and he was like because this shit is sad , that made me laugh .

That is true , That is true . So the team talked and they want him back at Richmond . And you wrote here a team doesn't know . it's true crime . What's this true crime ?

I don't think the team know they know about the sign . They don't know about Trent . They don't know , they don't know . Remember they said . They said when we find out who did that I believe it was Isaac who said it as a matter of fact , we're gonna find out who did it and we're gonna fuck them up . That was Isaac's last words on this topic .

We'll find out , you'll see So Nate says no , thank you , because he finds that Ted hasn't been involved in it . I was like wow , imagine the team talking Hey guys , guys listen .

We're gonna do this thing . Well it's like guys .

I wanna show you what happened . Nate came into it here . He was bit in this room and someone would be like , oh , he must miss it . You know what I mean . Like someone's like . Why would he do that ? Yeah ?

like they really thought about it . Right And then because yeah , they would have felt that .

Well , the team is like different . now It's a different you know what I ? mean You think about the team Nate left ? That's not this team . Now This team has evolved .

Actually , yeah , you're right . Yeah , because I'm thinking of it as like , well , he left this , but he didn't leave this . No , He left , yeah , he left the end of act two , I mean act the end of season two , Basically act two . But yeah , Yeah , I mean yeah , yeah , But yeah , see you now .

These are not the droids you're looking for , I mean he is in a very , very different dynamic in that locker room , in the coach's room , In the owner's suite . I mean you look all the way around and people have evolved and they have grown thanks to an innumerable amount of small interactions to build culture .

It's gonna work . Well , we will explore why I say this when we do the deep dive , but I believe that actually , in storytelling terms , ted is the antagonist And that's why everybody around him changes , because that is actually what he is in people's lives .

He's well he challenges you to challenge your own personal status quo .

Yep , and it's pretty , i mean . So , yeah , wherever he goes , when he goes back to Kansas , somebody's gonna hand him some team . Maybe there'll be a bowling team , it won't matter , they'll be knocking down 300s before you know it .

I was talking with producer the other day trying to get me to write like he's , like you do not understand how desperate the industry is for the next Ted Lasso . They are dying dying for you know what I mean .

And he's like you got this . You're like what ?

do you have in your pocket . And I was laughing because like , yeah , this one was a , this was a thunder clap . And we kept saying , oh , let's , let's see if they stick the landing . And we're one episode away and it looks pretty damn stuck .

They might take a step , but you're like they haven't thrown their arms up yet .

No , no , no . The part of it you really want to hear is that it wasn't her , like just the verification . Yeah , no , no , i wasn't having that much sex with her Actually . No , like , oh shit . It wasn't all me , It's a lot . It's a lot .

My mom and daddy have a lot in common .

So , like I will talk about my childhood and you will shudder , You'll go oh my God , But if we're out , if I'm Ted Lasso , it doesn't matter If I'm me and my mom walks into a room . Everybody loves me , Everybody . She's a firecracker , big personality .

Oh , yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah , she had me cracking up , of course .

Seriously , I don't know what I meant . I was like oh yeah , The moment that is 100% my thing is we'll get to it later but when everybody's around her in the locker room , she's like Queen B holding court And Ted's like I got to run a goddamn football team , Like he yells , like you never hear Ted .

Yeah , this , this , this was interesting . Like we talk about niceness and and and , niceness versus kindness and and sort of like , even the lasso way . you know , watch this thing . that was much more surface even though it had some depth to it , not anything like where we are now .

So this , the specter of this looming sort of mandatory responsibility , accompanied her visit . For you , you're saying , like this was just the gorilla in the room And yeah , I think so . OK , OK .

I mean , as I look at it , but yeah , But I mean in this moment , though , it is clear that he is , He's wound up . I mean , arguably he's as wound up as he is when he has the anxiety attacks . It's just a different emotion or a different feeling , So it's not coming out that way . But I mean he is undone , He is .

There's no such thing as a small interaction , and yet he will leave the interaction to go play fake pinball . I mean , when have you seen him do that ? I mean , it's he . You know what ? This is weird . This is interesting , ok . Ok , we're getting to something because you can . Oh good , you know what you're going to say . God , you take it .

I think so No , no , no , no , do it , do it .

Do it Because you can do it , you , you , you build a persona . And in my case , you know , i was less than excited by the family that I was grew up with and you know sort of like the family . I didn't have to . You know you don't get to choose . This is your family .

Right . And so I said you know what ?

I'm going to make a family of my friends And then I accumulated , i think , some of the best people in the world And I got to be . They allowed me . You and my other friends allow me to be the person that I want to be . But your mom sees you for the person that you were when you were a little kid , before you had to figure it out .

So I don't know , at least in my situation it is for sure . Yeah yeah . Yeah , and and , and you wonder . Here I mean Although I mean the way , her way of being she probably , i would think she probably didn't express much one way or another . Really , you know what I mean ? Just a lot of like You're happy , isn't that great ? Isn't everything great ?
