Episode description

There are many existing terrestrial sources for renewable energy including hydroelectric, geothermal, solar and wind. But Space Based Solar Power (SBSP) promises to harness unlimited sunlight from space.  In this episode, Karen Jones (Space Economist and Policy Analyst, Center for Space Policy & Strategy) talks to Martin Soltau  (co-Chair of the United Kingdom’s Space Energy Initiative) and John Mankins  (Chair of the International Astronautical Federation’s Committee on Space Solar Power, author “The Case for Space Based Solar Power”).  They discuss the international community’s planned projects, a possible SBSP “race”, investment challenges, and what to expect over time.

To get up to speed, check out this CSPS publication “Space-Based Solar Power: A Near-Term Investment Decision” by James Vedda and Karen Jones.

The Space Policy Show is produced by The Aerospace Corporation’s Center for Space Policy and Strategy. It is a virtual series covering a broad set of topics that span across the space enterprise. CSPS brings together experts from within Aerospace, the government, academia, business, nonprofits, and the national labs. The show and their podcasts are an opportunity to learn about and to stay engaged with the larger space policy community.
