Happy New Year! On the first 2023 episode of The Searchers, Chris and Ben review Hibotan Bakuto, or Red Peony Gambler, from 1968. The film is a ninkyo eiga ("chilvary film") starring Sumiko Fuji, Ken Takakura, and Tomisaburo Wakayama, and it's directed by Kosaku Yamashita. It's our first Japanese film that we're talking about, so hopefully what's talked about exposes you to possibly another unfamiliar corner of cinema's landscape. Tanoshinde!
