Hello pet enthusiasts , welcome to Pet Chat . My name is Jason Zakowski . I'm the dog dad of Bunsen Beaker the science dogs on social media .
My co-host is Hi , there , i'm Chris Zakowski , and I am the dog mum to Bunsen , beaker , the cat mum to ginger and the social coordinator of all things at our house .

Right , okay , it's Pet Chat . All right , five questions . This surprising accessory made men less threatening in a threatening situation , so I talked about this on this week's Science Podcast episode , episode 17 . Crocs , a mustache , a dog , a top hat .
Now , while all are plausible , there is only one that was done in the study , and if you listen to the Science Podcast , it was a dog .
Jason , what ? I must ask you a question Why was it the dog ?
So they did not go into beyond the conclusion of what the study said . But you could make some correlations that people who have a dog are not if they're in a threatening situation .
And what they did is they had college kids look at photos of people and the threatening situation was like a spooky background , like a dark alley or something , and maybe they just assumed that the man is just walking a dog , but without the dog . Maybe that man is up to no good . So that was very interesting .
He had the men with dogs had the highest favorable rating in a threatening situation . So that answers that question there And you can . You can hear about the whole thing on the Science Podcast this week .
Did they compare it to men with babies ?
I know it was dogs .
No dogs .
No dogs No dogs . Men , women No , no , there was . I'd imagine if somebody who had a mustache , a top hat and wearing crocs , you would be one of two things You'd be like why are they in a threatening situation Or they are the threatening situation One of the two there ? There are so many kids now wearing crocs , chris , i'd say .
I'd say like 30% of the kids are wearing crocs now , like they're . They're like the shoe to wear at high school .
They are the shoe to wear . One of my students just got some pink ones and I said I love your feet . And she said , i know , and she had a sea turtle charm on it .
Yeah , the charms .
The charms . And I said I love your charms , those shoes are amazing . What size are your feet ? And she said eight . I said no way . Your feet look so petite in those crocs .
All right . Next question Oh well , we have Tinks , katrina Slim , shady Slime , shady Snake I don't know which one is , chris , but Tinks , you're in first place . Beaker and Ginger have been fighting over this for about a month now . Adam , a sock , the corner of the couch , a box What has Beaker and Ginger been fighting over for about a month now ?
Yes , if you've been following the couch wars , it's the corner of the couch and whoever gets there first stays as long as they possibly can , and nobody , nobody , can be as patient and weighty as Ginger . She just will wait and wait and wait and wait there to keep . If she's there , she will keep the corner for as long as possible And she won today .

Oh , that's awesome . That means they're following us .
All right Tinks is in first Snake Slime , shady , katrina and Violet , okay . Next question Oh , what percentage of people sign cards with their dog's name ? This one was a little infographic I made on TikTok . No , sorry , instagram , facebook and Twitter and for our little like infographic things that did really well .
Okay , what percentage of people sign cards with their dog's name ? You have to be within 10% to get it correct , and it is 70 , 70% . Did you get that one , chris ?
I did , although we are not one of those 70% . Sometimes I sign Bunsen and Beaker .
Maybe I think it depends on the situation , like if it's a fun and bubbly thing , then yes , but if it's like something serious , then no .
But Bunsen and Beaker sign their own cards . They get Pothograph .
This is true , this is true . They sign their own cards . That's right . I think we are just atypical , i don't think . Okay , we have , oh , chris , moved up to first Slime , shady , kz , kathy Tinks and Snake . Okay , next question .
Hey KZ , and I have the same initials .
There you go . On the Science Podcast , dad Guy talked about this level of particulate matter which makes wildfire smoke dangerous . So at what level of particulate matter is wildfire smoke dangerous ? 50 , 20 , 100 , 2.5 . And it's 2.5 .
Yes , if you've listened , if you listen to the Science Podcast , that's a tough one , but at that level it's , the particles are so fine It actually gets into your blood .
It can travel through your lungs and into the aviolite in your lungs and then actually get past the barrier into your blood and then it causes a whole bunch of problems And that's where people have really , really bad reactions to all that smoke .
I have heard that the New York area isn't as bad as it was early in the week , but I did a whole story on the Science Podcast about the smoke coming from Quebec and Nova Scotia . I don't know if you got that one , chris , chris , what you did .

I could talk for days . Okay , because you may recall , last week was very busy for us . We had , i had , you had , you had the Children's Festival and I had the Marchion Show Bank Classic with the Red Deer Royals , and so our we were very busy for a few days , and this weekend even you said boy , where do where's all this time coming from ?
Why do I not feel so busy ?
Yep .
It's because we weren't as busy , we had more downtime . So today I got to spend time with the dogs And you posted yesterday , i believe about Ginger crying to get out , and we've been talking about her trying to escape every day at nauseam . We've been talking about it .
So I said , well , i think today I'll spend some time outside with her and I'll take her out and put her in her patio , and then I took the dogs out on the deck and then you had lunch outside with us And we just spent a really great time on the deck hanging out , and then , and then I set up Baker's Pool , and so she was so happy about that .
She steps in it , she steps out of it , she steps in , she steps out . I think she's thinking , hmm , why is this not as deep as the creek ? Yes , yes , but she was loving it . So I can't wait to fill it a little bit further , a little bit more , and then see if she'll sit early down , because it is has been a scorcher for the last week .
Oh man , it's been so hot today . It wasn't too bad , but I think that's because the fire , the the wildfire smoke , was back Like it was . it was kind of hazy this morning .
Yeah , it's a little bit back . Adam had a parade today in Sylvan Lake , and then what ? Then I had to go there and then I picked him up and then we went to Costco And then I spent time with the dog . So it's been a very eventful and very busy but , i guess , fulfilling , and a day that I can put a lot of checks off in the boxes of things to do .
But you know what ? My number one is spending time with the dogs . Yeah , check .
That's something that today was just awesome . It was just a chill day . I worked on Bunsen and Beaker content . I I you might have noticed there was not a whole lot of new content coming out on Twitter last week . That's because I was playing .
I was playing catch up , as it usually I use most of Saturday to work on content , so I got some of it done today and yeah , it was . It was a lot , a lot more slow paced .
Jason , jason , i thought , i thought , I thought you . You said you were playing catch up . I thought you were going to tell our audience that you were playing Diablo .
Well , i do have a new video game , and it has . I have been playing a bit of it this week . I've had time to play it , whereas before I haven't . Yes , yeah , diablo I I . it's a game that I fell in love with . How ? how long ago , when I first started teaching , there was a game called Diablo two and I fell .
I fell in love with it , and this is the new one just came out . So I am really enjoying it . but that's not a pet story , chris . No , i don't think anybody in the space can really relate to that either .
Okay , Some people might you never know , because we were in Save On Foods and I was in the milk section and we were just standing there because it was a little busy in that section and the two employees were talking about Diablo .
Yes .
And one of them said , hey , are you playing the new Diablo game ? And I turned and I looked and he didn't look like someone who I don't know if you can profile , who are Diablo players , but he was like an older , older gentleman . I was like , oh , interesting , but I guess it's it transcends all ages .
But the other guy had not been playing it And then he was telling about it and I said , jason , jason , they're talking about Diablo . And you were like what ? So you never know what appeals to people And in and around you .
That's true . Yeah , that's that , that , that is true .
But the people are really here for the dogs , that's true .
Yeah , so I my pet stories . There's nothing earth shattering that happened this week . To be honest with you . I've been , i've been late coming home because I've been playing catch up at the school , like I have had to work a bit later this week just because with my job it's the big push to finals for high school teachers .
So this week I'm really , really busy . I think like next week is your busy week , chris , but this last week was my super busy week where I was like getting kids late assignments marked and organizing tests , and I'm the science department head , so there's a lot of screwing around the school that I had to do .
So , yeah , but one thing that I've enjoyed is I've had time to just take the dogs for a walk And we tried something , or I tried something yesterday and it was a bit of a fail . You may or may not know , we have the .
We finally got the ability to have subscriptions and purposely I set it to $1 , the cheapest it could possibly be on Twitter And for everybody who's subscribed , that's thank you . That's great . The whole idea is that we're hoping to get many , many , many , many people subscribed for that low , low , low price , right ?
So we're not trying to make it something that would you know be impossible to pay , but one of the perks we're going to have is a is at least try to have one a walk a week , and I've been disappointed with Twitter video on our live walks , so I tried zoom , yeah because it looks like Minecraft .
It looks like you're playing Minecraft .
And I couldn't find how to unmute myself . And then , because it's zoom , it wants to always be on your face . So I had to like turn my phone around So I couldn't really see what I was like showing people , because in zoom it's not like you're showing other people . Your zoom right , it's like for meetings . So I'm going to keep working at that , but it was .
It was kind of fun Taking the dogs for taking the dogs for a walk , and the duck is gone . I did not see the duck . So the update on the duck I think the duck has moved on And beaker . At the very end she was wet from jumping into the creek .
She dug a giant hole as I was catching up to her and the people who were on the zoom call I think we were closest close to the house So the signal went up and they got crystal clear picture of like the dirtiest beaker face imaginable She was like so much . So that is my , that's my Bunsen and beaker story .
Okay , I'm so sorry , Jason , You got some barking dogs . Yeah , I thought I was on mute and I was not . And then Bunsen is . He heard the music and he's like , Oh , it's time to light the lights . It's the Muppet Show tonight , And then he does his toddler time . So that happened . So I apologize everybody that if you got Bunsen bark in your ear .
And I apologize I have a cold . I all of the kids at the school are sick . Every kid that I teach like 90% of them have this gross cold And I finally caught it . So I thought I was out of the woods with not being sick , but I caught this like huge bug that's going around my school .
So I apologize , i'm starting to get kind of snogged up here , but , chris , i think we can probably go to community sharing right now , hey .

Okay , good , i think , okay , I'm just a little out of breath , but anyway , trixie's getting bigger and bigger and bigger and I'm running and it's like I'm . I think I'm like perpetual run mode . Now , if anybody's had a puppy around 14 weeks , it's like non-stop and She's into everything .
So today She was kind of pulling plant leaves and jumping all around and I finally said , alright , time out . So I , i did tweet this really cute picture of her in her little crate And she just looked at like like I'm in jail time . So it was like you know , it was pretty funny .
But if you can I don't know if you can post it I got my phone but I'm on circles So I don't know if I can get over there , but anyway , but I wanted to say to everybody you gotta , you gotta subscribe for a dollar , because This is the best stuff going . I mean it .
I'm shouting out to all the community out there for a dog land , because we've been on dog Twitter for a long time following You , jason , and it's the best stuff out there . It's so much fun . We're building a community , it's , it's great . And then we went .
I went on that creek walk with you and it was funny because I , i don't know zoom , because I You know it works home . So I'm trying to tell you to hit your red mic and I know it's bright . You couldn't see .
I couldn't have had my sunglasses on , it was so bright , it was so bad and it was like trying to get to Talk .
So it was . It was a lot of learning curve , but I must admit it was a lot of fun because you could really see things . And I just encourage everybody you know , for that dollar and to be part of this , it's gosh . You don't get anything for a dollar , not even at the dollar store , because I think in America now It's like what ? like a dollar 20 .
It's not even a dollar . So it's a great deal and I Just want to say thanks to you guys for all the great content and But if anybody's got any good tips out there how to get a little bit more energy , because I'm tapped today . That dog kept me . But she's a lot of fun , she really is .
She's getting big and I'm kind of at that stage to her I don't want to really start clipping her yet to look like a Priscilla Griffon , because I know she's gonna lose all that puppy fur and I kind of like her like this right now . So I know whence whence that kind of goes . She's gonna . She's totally changing .
She almost looks like she had a bad You know hair dye , because the black tips are all at the end and she's got like like a blonde coming underneath , so it will be interesting to see what color she is .

Thanks , paula . Yeah , i remember having puppies with when Bunsen was a puppy and beaker was a puppy , and I would try when Calan was a puppy and when Calan was a puppy , that's true , and we were just , we were just tired , and If I got up early too many times I would actually get a migraine .
So normally I'm a really I'm a morning person , but it was , like you know , getting up at four o'clock in the morning a week straight . I start to get migraines .
Now I can relate . It's . It's crazy , because this morning she wanted . You know , i went to bed a little bit late . I got her out and she was fine , and then it was like Quarter to five and she's jumping on my face and it's like no , and then it's like you don't know if they're playing or they need to go out .
So you got to get her out and then , when she's out , then she's like well , it's breakfast time And I'm like no , no , no , no , it's time to go back and sleep . But she was pretty good , but her , her sleeping habits have been great , but it's just a couple of days there . It's like it's . It's like having a
¶ Dog Dock Diving and Technical Difficulties
new baby . So , but I don't know if you can mute me , jason , because there's on my phone , it just says request . I can't turn my mic off , so You are speaking through Twitter spaces .
Yeah yeah and I can . I can meet you if you're okay with that .
I'm fine . Yeah , because I can't do it . For some reason it glitched and it's not on my phone . I can't turn it off .
There is a lot of glitching going around in Twitter spaces . The last week and a half I've been hearing from other audio people , so All right , great , all right .
Well , i just wanted to tell you that because I didn't want you to have background noise from me , and but I can't turn it off On my phone . It's just as request .

What's funny , pink princess in the city says Jason , i need to let you know that I happen to be a fan of Diablo's folklore and artwork and There's a major Diablo fan that she tags , so I'll have to take a look at that . Yeah , i love the . The story and the art is very .
You know , it is kind of like a violent game , for sure , because you're killing monsters , but it's very gothic , like we had that gothic Scientist on who talked about monsters . That's kind of the aesthetic of the game . It's just very I just love it . It's so cool . Okay , are there anybody else ? any other community sharing that would like to occur ?
We had a signal drop on Facebook . We're back up again . I think we lost . Oh no . Yeah , i wonder if it just boots everybody out , if we have a single signal drop .
I'm not sure I'm bringing Benny up .
When it gets really yeah , and the other thing is when it gets really really hot . Our , our signal goes down , chris . That's when we have . The slowest signal is when it's really hot .

I'm trying to sound like Chris when I say hello .
I don't know if I do or not but you did , you did it just fine , hello , hello .
There it is , back to my surveillance days . Anyway , it's dog diving season again .
I know it's so cool .
It is so cool . So Benny is totally into it . Bowie not so much , poor thing today . So she's never actually swam . So this was Her first really big introduction to water . So the instructor there was very Understanding of that . So she said we'll just take her on to the ramp and we'll introduce her slowly .
So she was doing great , she was having a great time , she was splashing , she was going after the Wabba and it was just . And then all of a sudden she said you know what ? I'm just gonna go dive off the side of the ramp . And She did , and of course there's nothing but water underneath the ramp . So she had to swim and she wasn't prepared for that .
So it was just she can swim . So we learned that . But She did not enjoy that experience very much . So after that she was very hesitant to Go into the water after that . So we encouraged her a little bit and then the instructor said you know what ? I think it's enough for her for now . So I said , yeah , i totally agree .
So we brought in Benny eventually . But Benny , oh my god , he was so , so excited . So we are waiting . There's sort of lots . So everybody has to Take their turn and they have to wait patiently .
So Benson was third up and And as soon as he knew he was going into the pool , i was holding him and he was so excited that he literally took off and I was literally Dragged across the grass .
Oh my god .
Skin knees , skin , elbows , and this happened not only once but twice . So my pride was so wounded because apparently I'm this big tough cop , but not so much that day . So it was just so . He was just so happy to be there . So his first jump Was he went right off and he was amazing . He didn't go too far .
But I apologize , i didn't get good video of the other jumps because I was watching video . I was watching Bowie and Bowie was just like hey , mom , do you see me doing this ? So I could not video poor Benny . But Benny had some spectacular jumps and he was hoping to film them for bakes , of course . So it was just , but I missed them .
But a great day , back dock diving , and hopefully Bowie will Overcome the the fear of the ramp , and it was just . I felt so bad for her because she was so excited . It was just like . But as soon as Benny sees his green , or like the Wabba , which is green I know they can't see green , but he is just like he just goes insane .
But that's sort of my day today and it was a good day and it was just hilarious watching the dogs today .
¶ Dock Diving and Science Stories
I saw . I saw your post and I watched this . It's awesome .
Yeah , i saw your post too and it inspired me actually to search up dock diving here in Central Alberta And I found a location just outside Lacombe That I'm going to call , and then there's one in Niscue Jason , which is just south of Edmonton .
And then also we're not going to Niscue . That's like an hour and a half drive .
Yes , but Jason , there's nothing in downtown Red Deer , so like we're gonna have to drive . Yeah and there's one in Calgary , which are all local not local to us , but definitely achievable to take beaker To give it a try .
So thank you . Oh , i'm sure she'd love it . And it's just , and I and I joke that I'm the only one probably in the world that Drives our dog and now we're gonna have to go to swimming lessons . So it's , but it's . It's hilarious . But I have another story as well , regarding the Bunsen and beaker beaker stuffies .
Oh yeah , you kindly Participated in with this . So I brought them to work and I sent out a memo to all of my colleagues and in sexual assault child abuse as well as partner assault , because they do a lot of child interviews as well . And It was just I had one of my colleagues come to me and he goes You know who Bunsen and beaker are ?
Well , of course I know who Bunsen and beaker . I said how do you know who Bunsen and beaker are ? and he goes Well , i follow them on Twitter . And I said well then , you must be familiar with Benny . And he goes well , isn't that the dog that's that's really interested in beaker ? and I said , well , yeah , and I said that's my boy .
And he goes no way , and it was just so . We've got that connection now . So I have Seven Bunsen and beaker stuffies overlooking me while I do my job every day and it's just and is Not good for handing them out , but good that this week We didn't have to hand any Bunsen and beaker stuffies out , so that was a good week for children . I .

Well , you know what ? it's pretty easy just to dump stuff on a board , but it It's just . I'm really trying to Work on . I retire next year , so this is sort of my last year . So I love to cook , baking I'm working on . So my scones the other couple weeks ago worked out Okay , they weren't fantastic , but they'll get fantastic one day , but it's just so .
I'm trying to work on my plating and All of that . So I thought you know what , i'm just gonna throw this out in Twitter and see , see what the response is . So it's , it's , it's good . So that was our snack today , just to reward ourselves . Because it's just , we put so much in like energy and entertaining everybody else and we never really reward ourselves .

I fostered both Tink and her sister and a friend of mine adopted her sister when I adopted Tink . This was right . I had gotten them about a week or two before the world shut down And rather than have a lot of strangers troop through the house and interview a lot of people and all of that to adopt . She just was a foster fail .
But Tink's sister loves the water and they have a little kiddie pool like what you've got And Yoshi just runs through that water and has the best time And Tink her looks at her like she has lost her mind .
That's the look that Bunsen gives Beaker sometimes .

Long story short , and we had to go to get groceries this morning And we were in the Tim Horton's drive-through to get that coffee And we saw a Bernie's Mountain Dog and a Golden Retriever in the vehicle next to us . I wanted to jump out and take my phone and say look at my dogs , we have two of those as well . But I didn't .
I refrained from jumping out in the drive-through Mainly because the guy didn't look friendly and he had two dogs . So , jason , what I think your science is bad .

It's still free now , like you still get jokes , but I think everybody knows that you do have to pay somebody money for a newspaper or for anything like that .
So it is something I've done for free for four years and it's a ton of work doing those jokes and I love doing it , but it's something that I think now is the time to start thinking about , doing stuff that supports us for all the hours and hours and hours we sink into the jokes .
So hopefully that doesn't alienate people too much and it's only $1 a month .
