¶ Pet Chat
Hello pet enthusiasts . Welcome back to Pet Chat . We're back . My name is Jason Zakowski . I'm the dog dad of Bunsen and Beaker , the science dogs on social media . My co-host is .
Hi there , I'm Chris Zakowski and I am the dog mom to Bunsen and Beaker and the cat mom to Ginger .
Every week we perform a live show with games , prizes , stories and , if you're new to Pet Chat , we start with a game called Kahoot . It's a wrap up and a retread of the things that happened during the week .
If you're listening to the replay , i still keep the game in so you can play along , like everybody's playing along right now , and the goal everybody the goal is always to beat Chris , because Chris is very hard to beat at this game . What have you signed in as today , chris ?
My avatar is terrifying . What is it ? Do you see me ?
Is it a zombie with three eyes ? You're signed in as again Slim Shady .
Get some slack back , back , back again . Get it Shady's back , back , back , back . Okay .
Okay , it's the July 8th . Pet Chat Kahoot . Here we go Beat Chris . That's actually what it should be called July 8th , called Beat Chris . In Text from Bunsen this week it looks like the dogs are going to travel the earth in search of the perfect moose leg . Dig to the center of the world , head to outer space , keep working on eternal winter .
Big developments potentially in Text from Bunsen going forward . What is it ? So , if you yep , the correct answer is head to outer space . Full credit goes to Chris for this idea . That's going to be the new storyline in Text from Bunsen going forward . We're really excited about that .
The cover of Text from Bunsen 2 has eternal winter , the machine that Beaker and Bunsen have been working on . So , yeah , a shout out to Barkandbeyondsupplycom . We're going to talk about them in a second , but thanks for coming , barkandbeyondsupplycom . All right , chris got that one , but lots of people did very close match .
Going on to the next question Baby talk , aka parentees , is used by humans to babies and humans to dogs . But this animal also uses parentees , and this is a really adorable study from last week and I did a thread this week on it which I guess I can probably put into the nest with a chat or something .
Anyways , parrots , cicadas , dolphins or fireflies And , oh my goodness , everybody got this . Congratulations , it was dolphins . Wasn't that an adorable study , chris .
Yes , and everybody loves dolphins . I love dolphins .
How could you not love them ? They're so freaking cute .
And they feel like hot dogs .
That's right . You've got to swim with dolphins . So did you , that's right . I was with little Adam , though He was kind of scared of the dolphins .
Yeah , he was .
They are big and they look like they're smiling , but they have sharp teeth .
Yeah , they do have very sharp teeth in there , don't they ? And they eat fish in one bite .
Many fish .
That's kind of terrifying actually , yeah , when you think about it , they look so happy , though .
Okay , They do Um very close match .
Very , as you say , that Bunsen smiles a lot and he also has very large teeth .
Yes , but beaker has by far sharper teeth than Bunsen . Bunsen's teeth are kind of blunt . Beaker's teeth are like their hunting teeth .
Yeah , and Jason knows this because he does the dental check and puts his fingers in their mouth .
I love to put my fingers in their mouth . They have to get used to that .
Yeah , 100% .
Okay , next question Adam is playing at this right now , so we're missing Adam . He's been gone for a couple of days . He's playing somewhere . Is he playing at the Ho-Down Showdown Stampede , westerner Days , klondike Days or the Calgary Stampede ? So this has been big news in our family .
We've been tweeting about it And I guess our subscribers have gotten a little bit extra . It's the Calgary Stampede . I do like the one person who picked the Ho-Down Showdown Stampede . That does sound very Western , doesn't it ? Ho-Down Showdown , what's Adam doing today ?
Well , he did play at the Show Band Showdown .
Yeah , the Show Band Showdown , That wasno . What day is it today , saturday ? He played on Thursday , right .
No .
No Wednesday .
Tuesday .
Tuesday , tuesday Is it .
Your favorite word of the week .
Tuesday Yes , Congratulations everybody who got that . Chris , Dr Liz is only five points behind you And Heather is like 30 points behind you . There's no room for error . You guys can take Chris down today .
She can lose this game .
Okay .
Okay , now I'm starting .
A new animal has shown up on the farm to cause chaos . What is it ? A moose , a badger , a beaver , an owl ? I think we talked about this before we took a break for Canada Day last week . We did not have a pet chat on Canada Day , it was a beaver .
Yeah , i think we mentioned that , but the beaver definitely has damned up the creek and he stopped it from flowing and is backfilling into this massive , like slu lake that Beaker loves to swim in , and it's actually making her really stinky . So that water I'm not sure how clean that is . She smells like beaver water now , so she's the gross one .
She's still very cute , though . Okay , oh , liz got that wrong . Oh , no , dr Liz got that wrong . Heather's still in it , though .
Where's the womp , womp , womp ?
Womp , womp , womp . Okay , the part of the cat , this part of the cat brain is superior to the dog brain . So this was on this week's text from Bunsen . No , this week's thread , no , this week's podcast episode . Anyways , this part is better . The cerebral cortex , the midbrain , the hindbrain or the medulla One of these is better in a cat .
Okay , this one was tougher because you would have had to listen to the science podcast and it's the cerebral cortex . The cats actually have a bigger and more developed cerebral cortex than a dog brain and that's where all of the thinking really occurs .
That's the gray matter in your brain that codes for learning , memory and , i guess , decision making , all of that , yeah , executive functioning , yeah , the cerebral cortex Cats is better , and you'll have to listen to the science podcast or my thread on Monday . I think I have a really , really fun thread coming out on Monday about this .
Okay , i think Chris won , but we'll see . In third place we have Erin . In second place we have Heather And , yes , it looks like Chris won , but congratulations to the other folks . In fifth and fourth , that's Mrs Dawn and Shatzi mom , congratulations .
Jason , we're all winners here .
We are . We are all winners . Should we give ?
a shout out to her .
What .
I just said we are all winners .
That's right . Participation ribbons for everybody , Chris .
I love it .
Should we give a shout out to our sponsor ? We are proud to have Bark and beyond supplycom now as an official sponsor of the science podcast . Bark and beyond supplycom is a small family owned company that started off making joint supplements for dogs , but now they sell toys and treats and a whole bunch of other goodies .

All right , so we finished the first phase of Pet Chat .
Jason and I are going to share a couple stories about Bunsen and Beaker and then we're going to open up the floor to the audience if they want to jump up to share their story . Do you want to go first , chris ? Sure , okay .
Today . Guess what we did today .
Oh , today was a good day .
Today was a great day .
Yeah .
We . I said hey , Jason , I really want to take Bunsen and Beaker to Waggles . Well , the wagon walk program put on by Waggles .
Yes .
And we went Bunsen and Beaker .
Definitely we're excited to go and it gives us an opportunity to socialize the dogs , socialize ourselves , but then also do some leash training , because when we typically walk , we walk through the creek and the dogs are off leash , so this allows for them to have a bit of practice not being able to go where they want and having to walk nice beside us .
So that's what we did and it was great and it was hot And I got to talk to a lot of the people that are part of the Waggles community , which was really nice , because Jason and I kind of been stuck at home because we're teachers and so we have no job right now , no friends , no work friends to talk to , so it's just been
¶ Spelling, Stories, and Family Time
in each other . But I always say I married my best friend .
Oh .
Yeah , and so , like you and I used to always hang out 24 seven together and you're just my best friend , i just love hanging out with you . Oh , put on some berry white .
What . That's not appropriate .
Okay , sorry . What is love , baby ? don't hurt me , don't hurt me no more . Oh , that's really nice .
Baby , don't hurt me , don't hurt me , no more .
Is that from the 80s or 90s , that's ?
so well , it's definitely not a burden to hang out with you all day , because you make me laugh every minute of every day .
Well , speaking of laughing , we've been working on Text from Bunsen volume two for hours every day since , like .
July 2nd , so July 1st Surprise .
Yeah , surprise what .
Surprise .
Oh yeah , it's not Okay . so we Chris and I got into this argument and maybe people can .
No , it wasn't an argument . We never argued .
Okay , we got into a debate and people It's not a debate . Jason . We got into a discussion . I was very animated and I maybe have said some bad words . It was . People can chime in and maybe people come up to speak . They can also give their opinion . So when we're doing texts from Bunsen , We have to rewrite the jokes so they fit the template .
Everything is going so much faster and it's going to be in much higher quality . So , like how many ? how many jokes have we written ? How many pages are we at right now ? 140 pages or something .
No , we did . we did beaker , which is a hundred itself , And then we did you , which was 95 .
Yeah .
And now we're on me .
You're at like you're almost 45 . We're almost 45 into your , your jokes .
Okay So it's a lot .
So in rewriting some of the , the punchlines change or I have to shorten it And we got to the word surprise and I spelt it wrong . So because it's an image , it's kind of a big deal when you spell it wrong because you got to go back and make the new image .
You can't just like change your word document And you're like Chris , you spelt surprise wrong And I'm like no .
I didn't . I know , i said Jason , surprise is spelt incorrectly .
Right .
And then then you said , no , it's not .
Yeah , no , it wasn't spelt incorrectly .
Jason spelled it S U P R I S E which is correct . No , it's missing the R . It's surprise .
No , but you don't say surprise , like you say surprise . You don't say surprise , surprise . Who says that You sound like a crazy person ? Surprise .
Canadians say that , canadians say surprise .
Surprise .
Surprise Yeah .
Like hey , do you want to come to my surprise party ? That sounds weird .
Anyway . so I did a little bit of research and if the next sound is a consonant , or if no sound succeeds , the R is not uttered . Okay , so even though the R in these words is quiet , it signifies a long vowel sound on a stressed syllable .
I tell you the English language . The English language was like people were drunk when they came up with it .
I guarantee I guarantee What .
Like you say the R . You say the R when you say rhyme or rat . Where has the R ? but it's a silent .
Where , But where ? where ? where it makes the R sound , There's no R , in surprise . Well , you're gonna have to agree to disagree on the English language Surprise . We're gonna have to agree to disagree on the English language .
But if you're British you would say mother , Ah , and you don't say mother , father .
Okay , but that's an accent .
Oh , I don't know . I don't know if that's their accent or if that's just if they're pronouncing it or not .
Well , I have to get some British people , but they're all sleep right now .
And Jamie . If Jamie's here in Australia , Yeah , if .
Jamie from Australia . that's kind of British Sort of .
I also have the silent R .
That's true , that's true , that's true , okay , well , okay , are you done with your story , chris ?
I just wanted to really talk about surprise so badly Okay , because it gets you so riled up .
Yes , yeah , i cannot spell and I hate spelling because it's the worst . I'm a scientist person , so you know that's just how it goes .
But this doesn't have anything to do with the dog . So do you want to tell your story ?
Sure , i got to . The cute one is Chris has a niece named Melissa who has two little kids . Well , ellie's not so little anymore . Is Ellie in like grade three ? No , grade two .
She's like eight years old .
Okay , well , she's not little , ellie's not little . And then there's Rafi , and a lot of people maybe have seen Ellie and Rafi and are marketing materials for the Bunsen and Beaker stuff . They're wonderful little kids . Rafi is hilarious , ellie's just so very calm and chill . And so Ellie was over .
They were over because we set up the swimming pool Well , not we , my father-in-law , but anyways , we have a swimming pool right outside her house . That's great for kids to swim in . And they came in and Ellie was asked if she could watch TikTok And I was like , ooh , we better ask your mom if you could watch TikTok .
And then what Ellie meant was she wanted to watch the Bunsen and Beaker TikTok And she was like cycling through all of the Bunsen and Beaker TikTok . It was weird . She couldn't get enough of it . I guess maybe I don't know , but what was really funny was for a kid . Her attention was held when Bunsen and Beaker were teaching gravitational waves .
She watched that whole thing . She thought she would just like , you know , click next to skip it , but she watched the entire thing And then she had some questions about gravitational waves after , which was really cool . So anyways , that was just like a cute thing .
The other thing that's a little bit more on the Bunsen and Beaker front is the stinky beaker , so I'm not sure what's going on in the creek .
Normally when Beaker goes in the creek she doesn't smell bad , but maybe it's from the beaver dam and all of the water backing up and it's been really hot and there hasn't been rain in like a week , but is Beaker is really smelly now So we need to give her a bath , which she won't mind , unlike Bunsen .
He will not go in the water , but Bunsen rolls and stuff that's stinky . So that's the whole thing there .
Yeah , but next week . I've signed her up for dock diving .
That's right . That's the other very exciting thing , for sure .
Well , i'm not going to say that she's going to go dock diving because it's an introductory lesson where she goes for 45 minutes and they kind of check to see like it's an excellent organization where they say we don't force dogs , you bring your dog , you have someone on one . It's 45 minute session , introductory , and then if she loves it , awesome .
If she doesn't , well then we tried it . But I don't want to say she's going to become a dock diver . Okay , she's going to be an introductory lesson .
Yeah , we don't know how well . You don't know how it's going to do . Until she's there , she might . She might not want to jump , even though she loves the water . You never know . So we'll see . You never know .
You never know , because they ask what type of swimming does your dog do ? And I said , well , she swims in the creek .
She swims in a beaver slew . You know , when beavers make a dam it's so hard to . Nobody relates to us . I was like you know when a beaver makes a dam and the creek backs up and then there's lots to swim in . That's what beaker swims in . Okay , that's weird . Well , i think I'm out of stories . I've got some more news items we'll sprinkle in as we go .
Sure , we do have to keep the chat to one hour today , as we're spending some family time with a hot dog roast and s'mores outside at our fire pit . So so , chris , do you want to read the ground rules or do you want me to read the ground rules ?
I sure do . We just had a request and that person left . So I do feel badly about that , Because normally what we do is we do our section and then we invite people up to speak . So we played our game , we've shared our stories and now it's time to request the mic .
And we are a wholesome account that loves to share our stories with you and we love to hear your stories . But we are a PG account and we do do a little bit of a background check on you , the people who request to speak . So if we know you , you're up for sure . And then sometimes we've taken a chance and it has not gone well .
So that's why we're a little bit , that's why we do a little bit of checking , and then we might send you a message or ask that you message us if you have a question . Just to vet accounts , that might be brand new and a troll .
It works pretty good . Last side chat there's a whole bunch of new accounts that we're really interested in the , the geo astrogeologist . Okay , we've got a whole bunch of people we brought up to the stage .
I'm going to let Indra go first , because I know Indra is busy in the evenings and she did talk a little bit about the story in her space that she might want to share . So Indra , go ahead .
Hello everyone , Good evening . Thanks so much for having the space really enjoying it as always fun . So my story is about a squirrel war , What's ?
it's a squirrel war .
Basically . Well , what started out to be like a little backyard cute little squirrel that you know , my husband and I were just like oh , admiring and just thinking how sweet it was how it just jumped around It turned . It's been two weeks of just full on war . I mean , i'm getting ready for combat , basically .
¶ Squirrel Troubles and Pranks on Plants
So initially right , it was sort of very devious . It was eating this big plantar box full of kale spinach And it was eating it from the back , so I didn't even see it first , and then it became very clear that all of it was eaten . So there was still some left right , and so I just pulled the whole thing out . Everything else was so angry , oh no .
Yeah , the whole thing went . And then I decided , okay , well , i'm going to plant ginger in there instead , right ? So the whole thing was planted with ginger And then the next day all the ginger was thrown out out of the plantar box , every single piece .
This girl was so mad at you .
Right . And then inside the plantar box there were a couple of these whole peanuts with the shell , and then basically I thought , okay , well , i'll fix you . I picked up the peanuts right in the whole shell And I strategically placed these two or two of those about three around the cactus and the dragon fruit And I thought , okay , go and fetch that .
Well , somehow he did And he came back And so the next day this ongoing saga he has the three peanuts sitting up in the plantar box , like he's giving me the finger . basically , yeah , i was just like what is going on .
So , anyway , okay , so I take the , because I thought , okay , he's obviously giving me a message here , right , and I need to be , i'm paying attention . So I've got the peanuts and I grabbed them And I stuck them on the top of the trash can because I thought I'm going to give the squirrel a message back . And so this is still going over a series of days .
The following day he grabs the peanuts , he puts them , he buries them into the plantar box , but there's about 20 peanuts now , not just the three , there's like 20 .
We got them from somewhere else .
Must have . I don't know where he's getting these peanuts from , but the whole thing was just like 20 peanuts . So I'm digging them up like crazy . Right , i'm digging up the peanuts . And then I thought , okay , well , i'll fix you . So I was in my garden boots and I crushed all the peanuts upright .
I just crushed them all And then I got the spay and I just put them all across the plantar box , okay . And I thought , okay , there you go . Now that'll , that's , you took my food source . Now , there you go . So , anyway , he just went nuts And he went across anything , any plant that he could that he could chip over . He chipped over anything .
He emptied the contents of everything , everything around that he could . It was just like , oh my God , what is going on ? And so then we're up to . We're up to present day now . So yesterday , the last piece of that saga up until today , it was late in the afternoon . I decided I'm just going to flood everything .
You know , just like it's pretty hot here , i'm just going to flood everything , the empty things , and when it's large , he's got peanuts now floating in everything , anything that was left . It's just like , i don't know , like there's hundreds of peanuts in my in there . I'm just so there we are . But the last piece is we did make a siding of him .
Now I have a little mini vineyard and he's eyeing off the grapes .
Oh no .
Just sitting in front . Yes , He's sitting in front . and then he turns around and tortures me and looks at me and runs off . So this is what's ? this is present day , a two week saga . That's my story .
Oh my goodness , indra Was like the kale and stuff you make smoothies with , like that was your food .
Yeah , yeah , he took and then oh , actually there's a little bit more . That I also found out later . I planted garlic and then all my other herbs . When he was angry , i think , he ripped all the mint out and the small herbs like the chives and things that he could grab , so he was just like mass destruction everywhere .
Oh man .
Everywhere . Yeah , And he's obviously not going for the bigger items . You know like he can't really push over anything that's bigger , But yeah , so he's . He's in big trouble now And I have no idea how to get rid of him . But somebody said get a , get some of those sound devices that we're just making leave .
Yeah , you can get a motion activated sound device for squirrels . I think Amazon sells them . Squirrels in Alberta are considered a pest , so they're like mice . So people sometimes snare them or trap them , which is kind of you know . People might get upset about that , but they are . If they're destroying your property , they're like a mice or a mole .
I know , chris , what happened with the . Melissa planted all of those carrots . What was it ? she planted in the moles ate all the bottom . So when she pulled them up it was just tops .
Yeah .
Yeah , like hundreds of carrots were just the tops of carrots , because the moles ate the all the bottom . So , yeah , maybe , as people speak , indra , they can give you some advice . I know , with bird feed and birds , bird things , you can .
There's guards you put on them so that they they can't , they they're , they're poles you put out And there's like this big kind of like shield that goes under it so that the squirrels can't go up the pole . They get stuck underneath the big shield . I don't know if that works with the planter planter box , though I wish you the best of luck .
Okay , who's next , chris ? Thanks for sharing , indra . That was very entertaining .
Actually Jason , i don't know because I was sharing about surprise , oh , okay . And I continued to share about how wonderful you are and you were just bringing . Oh no , this is when I was telling the ground rules . You were just bringing people up .
Oh yeah , i was just going bananas . Okay , so we'll go in order at basically what's on my phone . We'll go Paula , then Liz , then Sasha and we'll try to get to everybody before seven , because we do have to stop at seven . Paula , go ahead . Hello .
Hey , how's everybody doing tonight ?
We're great , hello , hello .
Oh , indra , i could tell you squirrel stories . I think you could just lube a pipe with oil and they'd still get on the feeder . But they have squirrel feeders . They eat like they sit down a little table in the nibble on corncob . So that might be something you might think of , because maybe he's like dinner somewhere else .
Oh , how a peace offering Like . instead of a cold war , just decide to have a United Nations packed of peace .
Right , and if you ever want to see something funny , i'll just say real fast , go on YouTube . and this guy made an obstacle course for squirrels and the things that they did to go through it . those little buggers are so smart and it's like they got through it . So it's really funny . and peanuts , they love peanuts .
So you want to change your bird feeder to maybe something else and put up a corn cob for him . So that's my advice , because we have a lot of squirrels here in New England . But anyway , tritsey's getting big . I posted a picture of today . I think she should be called Tritsey Long Legs because she's just all legs now .
So I'm hoping the tall will end up going stop and then the wide is going to start . But anyway , and I think Beaker would be great in dock diving I think you know if she likes that water . I don't know . I think that girl could rock . So that's my two cents . And , jason , i got to have the straight and narrow here .
Why in heaven's name did you eat a dog cookie ?
Okay , i have a bit of a sweet tooth and I snack at night , which is not good . I need to stop snacking at night . I have that's one thing I have to watch myself with . But I was like , hmm , these look good .
I was kind of rummaging through the cupboards and we don't have like cookies or sweets at our house And I was like , oh , chris must have put these away from like Christmas And I'm like I've eaten a stale cookie before . I think we've all eaten the Christmas cookie or something we found three months after Christmas . I guess this is pushing like eight months .
But anyways , i took a bite and I'm like this is disgusting And it was a dog cookie And I felt stupid . So that's what happened , paula .
Oh I , that was the biggest laugh I had all day because it , just because I can remember my brother when we were kids , you know , making a bet Hey see if you can eat this thing called doggy donuts , and we actually liked them .
So I don't know , we're strange , but they were good And my mom was yelling us because we ate dog donuts , but anyway , that just cracked me up , so I just , i just thought that that was the best story And so I can . I can sympathize and or empathize , and boy , but you picked the wrong one now because that one did look like an iced poop .
So Chris , what was it , Chris ?
It was a potato . Oh , it was a potato . I thought it was a potato .
I thought it was a peanut .
Well , you did . You thought it was a peanut . but there's like the lunch , breakfast and supper set and I bought I think I bought all three sets And I took a picture of one underneath that kind of thread that you did . So if people want to have a look , the lunch set is fully intact .
Okay , well , thanks , guys . Everybody have a great weekend and thanks for all you do , and can't wait for a Texman Bunsen too . It looks great And Sam's new pick of Adam is a spot on . That was really great , so yeah , i'm so .
Yeah , he did such a good job . I got to get back to him on that . I yeah subscribers and the pop pack got to see the new , updated art of Adam , as he's changed quite a bit since Sam did the artwork of him like two or three years ago .
So yeah , for a dollar . come on people , a dollar . Where can you buy a dollar ? She , andrew , you couldn't even get peanuts for a dollar , so this is like a way better deal . So come on , everybody , let's get . let's get everybody on these subscriptions because it is a great content . And thanks for all you do . Have a good night everyone .
Thanks , paula . Over to Liz . I think Liz is going to talk to me about surprise versus surprise , but we'll see . Go ahead , doc .
I'm not here to judge . I was gonna see if I could get some Twitter animal hive mind here You guys can put in the comments if you would be so kind . I can cut cats nails , i can do subcube fluids , i can give insulin injections , but this is a family show , so I'm not going to say what I want to say .
But how in the heck do you successfully give a stupid cat a stupid allergy pill ? because I can put it in his mouth and you blow on their nose and you massage their throat and then they run off and spit it away . So if anybody has any tips please , because dogs here have some cheese , so dogs are better than cats Anyway that's all I'm gonna ask .
It's that cerebral cortex ? The cat's too smart for you . It's like I'm not eating this . Yeah , it's great . So as we go through the speakers , if you have advice for Liz , i'll let you pipe , pipe up and tell , tell her . And also in the comments , if you have some advice for how you can give a stupid cat a stupid allergy pill .
Oh man , i couldn't even think about how to give ginger an allergy pill Like she does .
There will be blood .
Yeah , like she does come and she does listen and we were teaching her to sit and all that .
But I don't know about eating a allergy pill , but they know , like you can't even put it and hide it in their food , because they smell it and then they don't eat .
They have a very good sense of smell , Like people don't ? we don't give cats enough credit for their animal superpowers . They're not quite as good as dogs will smell , but they'll smell it . Yeah , you're right .
Okay , all right , that's all , thank you .
Thanks , doc . Okay , we'll go over to Sasha the Burnadoodle .
Hello Zakowski .
Hello .
Chris is right , it's S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E And I guess when I say it I put a little bit of an R into it , but I also grew up in the US and that might have something to do with it .
But I have some great stories this week and I know one you guys are really excited to hear about is I met Benson and Bowie's parents when they were in Victoria And I know you guys retweeted the picture of Lisa sitting next to Sasha , which was a great photo , and we just had the most amazing time . I felt like I had known them all my life .
They're just the most cool and personal people in the world And we spent like four hours just talking about our pets and it was absolutely amazing . Even Fiona , who our cat , who had just had dental surgery the day before and was in a very sour mood came out and demanded pets from them . I mean this is just how cool they are .
So I hope you guys get a chance to meet them in person someday because they're absolutely wonderful
¶ Discussion on Pets and Animal Behavior
. And Lisa also asked me to tell you that she does hope that Beaker likes dock diving , because she says Beaker is really built for it . She's got the right body type for it .
When we did agility training with Beaker . Do you remember how good she was at agility training , chris ? She's so good . She like there was like the the trainer . The trainer for agility had this . What was her dog in us Australian Shepherd .
No , it was like one of the duck diving retrievers that the Nova Scotia duck tolling , yeah , duck tolling .
Yeah toller .
So Beaker has never done this before and it was time to race and Beaker beat the like agility dog at the agility course . So Beaker's built like an arrow .
Well , and given I kind of have good feelings about this , given that she likes to jump off your paddle board so much , i think this is going to work .
So what you were talking about , the Bunsen and Beaker TikToks earlier , there's a TikTok channel I should point you to that features Sasha's fur dad , so it says her actual father , who's a Labradoodle named Louis , who lives up Island , and so you have to understand those of us who live in coastal British Columbia . A lot of us don't have window screens .
So you open the window , it's just open , and Louis likes to crawl out the window and sit on the roof of the house . My goodness . And this TikTok it's called Roof Dude R-O-F-D-O-O-D is all videos of his owner coming home and finding him sitting on the roof .
That's funny .
And it is flipping hysterical And I posted this on my own Twitter feed . Last week , the RCTV affiliate on Vancouver Island did a story , did a quick story about them . It was just really great to see that . But , yes , go check out Roof Dude And Liz . The answer is get the pill compounded into a liquid .
That is the only way I've ever been able to medicate my cats . Everything's got to come in a liquid .
A liquid .
Yes , and most vets . well , if they can't do it themselves , they'll just send it to a compounding pharmacy and they can make it into like chicken or salmon flavor or things like that . So yeah , that is all I got .
And but yeah , i just I know last week was Canada Day , but Lisa and I were so disappointed there was no pet check because we were so excited to tell you guys about meeting , so we also got into the discussion .
I'm sure those of you on here like me who posted their dogs there's definitely a difference between how our dogs behave in the Twitterverse and how they behave in real life , and we were comparing notes because Sasha is much better behaved on Twitter than she is in real life And apparently the same is true offense .
That's funny .
All right , have a great weekend , guys , and good luck to Adam for the rest of his stampede musicianship .
You bet . Thank you , okay , we will try to get to all of the speakers , so we're just going to keep going , because Chris and I do have a stop at the top of the hour . The order of people that I brought up were next is Dr Tracy , ramona and then Anne , so that's the next three . Thank you for being patient , everybody . Go ahead , dr Tracy .
I have two stories . One beavers I had some beavers that built a dam a couple of miles back in the woods behind my house . We're surrounded by thousands and thousands of acres of wood And we built a dam in the woods , conservancy land and state parks and national forest .
And so they built this dam on a beautiful pond and it was just really wonderful , it was so fun to see . And then they built a house and they had a family in there And you could hear them and you could see them in the pond .
And one day we went down there and , oh my gosh , the family , the kids , built another beaver dam and the whole ravine is flooded .
Wow , yes , wow .
There's water everywhere . It's just amazing . So that's what you have to look forward to .
Okay , oh no .
Yes , they do it too . Okay . The other one is squirrels , and you can hear her barking . Now I have a treeing walker Coonhound that we adopted just before Christmas And she's supposed to chase raccoons . But we don't let them in our yard .
It's all fenced and they're smart enough , most of them , not to come in during the day or at any time when there are dogs in the yard . They come in late at night And so she chases chipmunks and squirrels .
She is obsessed with them And she knows the squirrels go from the tops of the trees and into the woods , and so she's decided she wanted to get to them And she figured out how to get through our fence , our wire fence .
We have about half an acre fenced for the dogs And he pried open a couple of the wires that some raccoons had pried open to get in the yard , and she pried them a little farther apart as she got out , and we knew she was out because she was barking at my car on the other side of the house And she had scared something under the car .
So we brought her in and we thought she had jumped from the side porch over the fence , because it's not very far away . So my husband went to all this work to build some more fencing on the end of the porch so she couldn't jump over the yard fence .
And while he was doing that she got out again And she came up to the front door And so we took her back to the yard And that's when we found out how she had gotten out , and so we spent the whole afternoon repairing the fence .
And there was a lot of brush along the fence on that end because it was way down the very end of the fence , right against the woods , and so we cut all the brush away And a lot of the brushes is Japanese honeysuckle , which are small trees And they're invasive , and they get these huge trunks like six or eight inches across .
So you cut them all up with a chainsaw so they're small logs . We put those against the bottom of the fence and piled the brush against it so she can't even see the bottom of the fence And so now she just goes out there , she walks back and forth like she's trying to figure out what happened to the fence And how can she get through all this .
So I don't know what's going to happen , but that doesn't do any good with thousands of acres of woods because she's going to find her , and yeah , so I ordered an Apple AirTag today . I'll be back her , no matter where she is in the woods .
Oh smart , That's smart Yeah .
I ordered five of them , so if she loses one , there'll always be another one I can .
Sounds like you have your own squirrel wars to go with Indra's squirrel wars .
Oh yeah , i feel so sorry for her . I grow hazelnuts And every year about this time they get up in my hazelnut trees and they completely strip all the nuts away And they're still tiny and green . They're not ready to , they're not ripe until September .
They ripen in their little hidey holes maybe .
I guess . So OK , well , oh , and I have something . Oh teen left . No teen's still there . I want a teen . They'll be in the mail Monday .
Awesome . Thanks , Dr Tracy .
Thank you .
What great shares today . I wish we had more time too . We're going to go to Ramona and then Ann and then Richard , and then I know that her dropped down . But if there's time we'll get to you . if you want to come back up , go ahead , ramona .
Hey , good evening everybody . Just a quick note about oh , several months ago I was on here and it was the pet grief And I'd recently lost my 13-year-old mut , rescue mut , my girl Fiona , and then Chris saw it today . I know because she liked it , but I rescued an eight-year-old labradoodle from the Humane Society down here And he is such a sweetheart .
I don't , but what I wanted to tell everybody is I have a sneaky suspicion that his owner passed away and people didn't know what to do with him . I have no confirmation of that , but he is trained , he's well-behaved , he's recently had a dental And I can tell that he was well-loved .
So if you don't have a plan for your pets , make sure that you've got a plan . I know that that's something that none of us ever want to think about , because none of us want to go before our doggies do or our kitties . But he's here and he's decompressing And he's just a joy so far , but he's such a good boy .
I just wanted to tell everybody that I'm hoping I sent a note out to the universe because in my heart I have a feeling his owner passed away And so I sent a note out to the universe saying if you're watching . He's fine now , so I hope they get that message .
And so what ?
And are you still going to call him Boomer ?
Yeah , i think we're going to leave him Boomer . He answers to it And right now I'm just letting him decompress . Chris , he slept . I got him yesterday And I literally as soon as he was in the car he got in the back seat and he fell asleep . So he's decompressing from the shelter environment . Bless his little heart .
So he slept last night And he didn't eat a whole lot yesterday , but I wasn't surprised . So I'm just letting him decompress and letting him know he's safe And he's just snoozling . And , yeah , i'll probably leave him with Boomer , unless over the course of time something changes .
Although somebody did suggest Podrig , the Irish version of Patrick , and pronouncing it PAW . So I do kind of like Podrig , but make sure you have a plan for your pet shell , because I just have a feeling , because he's so well taken care of and well loved , i can tell . But he's got a forever home now .
What a wonderful story , Ramona . Thank you so much .
And thanks to you guys and thanks for all you do .
That's a cool story . That's sad if it was a death that led to the dog , but I mean it's very cool that you're there as the safety net And that is true Something you need to think about where your pets will go .
I put him in the nest . He's super cute , Jason .
Yeah , oh , let's see . Thanks , chris . Oh , my goodness , Look at his eyebrows . Look at eyebrows Look at his smile . Oh , my goodness .
He's adorable . And that was yesterday , jason . That was just literally like five hours out of the shelter . Yeah , he's lanky and adorable . Yeah , he's a sweet boy . What ?
a cute little Muppet . Thanks , thanks , ramona . Ok , we're going to go to Ann , richard , the herd and then Tracy . If we have time , we'll get to you , chris and I do have to stop right after the top of the hour . Is that still true , chris ? Like , do we still have plans right at 7 ?
Well , I can creep on Melissa to see where about she is , but I did say if she could go to Papa's house first . I'm just going to go check .
¶ Bittersweet News and Pet Care Tips
OK . OK , so we'll go to Ann . Go ahead , Ann . Hello .
Hello , i have bittersweet news . My 18-year-old cat was just diagnosed with cancer .
Oh , I'm sorry to hear that .
Yeah , she's not eating much . She's lost a quarter of her weight in four months But she is still full of beans and still going up and down the stairs .
But what I wanted to share was that she has become extremely affectionate toward the dog and wants to cuddle into the dog's tummy and sit on her feet and be a part of the dog's space , and the dog is not too sure about this . Oh , my goodness , there's a little bit of a side eye from the dog of are you going to hit me ?
Are you going to draw blood from me ? But it's very sweet to see the cat and the dog kind of prepare for Herriot's loss . But it's interesting to watch a cat and a dog get along , finally after five years .
Well , that is very bittersweet And I'm so sorry to hear that . That's tough . Thank you , that's very tough news . It does sound like in through the tough news , there are a lot of smiles and laughs at this time , so that's good .
Yes , that's good , yes , and Herriot is only living her best kitty life that she can possibly have , and that's all that I care about .
Yeah , that's true , that's true , Yeah .
So thank you very much .
You bet , i wonder if Bunsen and Beaker or sorry , i wonder if Ginger and Beaker will get along like that one day . They have like a very love hate relationship with each other . Let's fight over the edge of the couch And then we'll always hang out together all the time . It's very weird . So thanks for sharing in .
We're going to go to Richard the herd , and then Tracy Richard .
Hello , richard hello , hi everybody . A veterinarian doctor told me one time , when it comes to oral medications for your fur babies , if you wrap it up tightly in a small piece of toilet paper and then push it to the back of their tongue , they'll swallow it , because they can't push it back out . It'll stick in their throat and they'll swallow it .
OK , There's some advice for you , Liz . I see there's a ton of comments in the chat too . So there's a pill gun that Barkin' Beyond sells . That's cool . I have to check that out . Ok , Richard , thank you for the advice . Thanks for the advice from the vet .
Yes , I've heard that too , that sometimes the only way to get them to take the pill is to kind of force feed them the pill because it's for their own good , right They don't know . Ok , we'll go to the herd and then to Tracy . How's your audio ? Is it OK ?
It seems to be holding up right now .
Cool cool .
Yeah , i don't know . It was just glitching back and forth So I had to drop off and come back on a couple of times , but we appear to be stable right now . I just want to give a quick hello because we've had a couple of weeks off And I do dinner when Pet Chat is starting And dinner is an absolute nightmare tonight . It did not go well .
So if anybody wants to go see the tweet and video of that , i hope that everyone can laugh at me And I'll be able to laugh with you .
OK .
But herd update . I have two new pups . I have Frank . He's a Chihuahua pug mix . He's perfectly healthy , six months old . Pretty sad story behind him of abandonment , but He'll be good to go . I have a house full of puppies . I don't know how that happened .
My other newbie is a eight-week-old shizu puppy who was born with severe spinal fusion scoliosis , spondly osis and his back legs don't work . He's the size of a baked potato And he is just the cutest little thing . The front end is all happy puppy , puppy and , and the back end in the middle . We're just gonna have to wait and see how he grows .
So my intention is the same as it always is make sure they know what love feels like for however long they have . He's adorable , though He looks like a guinea pig .
Oh my goodness , do you have photos on your on your feed ? What about that ? this one ?
I do . He's kind of hard to photograph because he's fuzzy and the camera Just . You know his eyes are the same color as his face fur and it's just Yeah . My phone is having a hard time catching him . His name is Barry Allen .
He was named by the breeder Because he's so fast even though his back doesn't work , and Barry Allen is the human name for the comic book character , the flash . Yes , I know well , that's famous enough , so that works for us . That's right So hashtag the flash if you want to try and find one .
But I think everybody On here probably most of what I'm talking about or lots of that did want to touch on the pills for cats . I recommend a liquid . Even if your cat is older , you can crush it into Some chicken broth and then syringe it in at the corner of their mouth .
If not , your only other option is to risk your whole finger and just pop it back in there .
So like what Richard suggested , kind of the the yeah , yeah , okay .
Yeah , but you want to go straight in , not through the side or those . Those molars will . Yeah , it's bad , sharp teeth . They have such sharp teeth , and even the front one , so you want to go like a straight shot in between the fangs right to the back and Massaging their throat . It doesn't work with cats . They're just , they're cats .
They're cats .
I wish you luck , liz , i really do .
Well , we got tons of good advice and thanks for your update again .
Absolutely .
I did check on your . On your Twitter feed , i found Barry Allen the flash .
Right on . See , he's just a tiny little nugget .
He's a little on Yep , see , when I read , see , i got into the flash as a teenager . He's my favorite DC superhero . But yeah , but it was . It was the Wally West Wally West flash . It was after yeah , it was after Barry Allen . So when ?
no , in the Print comic books there was an issue that has the flash in a wheelchair and that that kind of Tied into what Barry . Oh , my goodness , our wheelchair maker is sending us a tiny little wheelchair for Barry to fit in and there's work on some other sizes for Him to , you know , have as he grows . That's amazing , really cool .
And The downside , you know , one of the downsides is he is incontinent and he is so tiny . So When I was at the vet with him on Friday , one of the doctors was in his scrubs and his mask was hanging and I'm like he's , that's like the right size , that might work .
So he gave me some of this mask And we just put a little disposable pad in there and that is working , because he's a little rectangle shaped dude , he's wiggled right out . So I got a ferret harness and it fits and it's adorable , and then the next size up will be a bunny harness and then he can go into a cat harness .
Oh , my goodness .
Yes you're a genius Well done , well done .
Well done . Well thanks for your shares . This week , if We we have a little bit of time , we'll go to Tracy to kind of round out the show Tracy .
Oh , yeah , that sounds good , jay is that ?
oh , i didn't mean to cut you off , i'm sorry .
Oh no , that's okay . I wanted to add one more thing to Ramona . Oh , my goodness , boomer has Owens legs and St Patrick's face . He is absolutely adorable . Congratulations , i'm so happy for you . He's gonna mend all the holes in your heart from your loss . Congratulations , thanks , team Love you . I love you too . I'm out .
Thank you , chris . Thanks for catching that . She was talking , i missed that . I wasn't . I wasn't looking at the screen . Tracy , go ahead .
Hi , i haven't been here most of this , but I also use a pill shooter for the cat when He needs it . What's a pill shooter ? what ?
does work . People are asking in the chat what a pill shooter is . What is that ?
I mean you just put like a pill in there in this little Section , and then it has a little lever at the back and then it shoots the pill to the back of the throat . Oh , so you just like hold the cat , so you don't lose your finger open and then And it's supposed to make it so they can't like spit out the pill .
Okay , okay Cool .
And Ricky's fine . Just quickly , i wanted to thank everyone who reached out with pet pictures earlier this week When I was having a very bad day , so That was very much appreciated and thank you guys again for doing that .
No problem , I look we retreated . we retweeted it and I hope you got some responses , Um I Did .
I got a ton of responses . So , yay , that was very nice of people to do .
Yay , well , thanks for sharing , tracy . I'm glad Ricky's doing well .
