Navigating identity after losing her Mom; A Boxing Coach’s Journey
Episode description
Sylvia Kim’s life changed course quickly in 2017 with some major life events, including her Dad’s diagnosis with cancer, surgery for her 2nd achilles rupture, losing her job, and ending a relationship. Thinking it couldn’t get much worse, her Mom was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, and passed away in 2019.
During the time her Mom was sick, Sylvia was working a corporate job she didn’t love. After realizing the lack of time she had to spend with her mom, she left that role and so started her journey in the fitness world as a boxing instructor.
Through some of the most difficult times in her life, boxing had become the medicine she needed. It became her safe haven. A place where she could release intense emotions, and start her healing journey – navigating the death of her Mom and grieving the loss of a future she’d picture with her. Her grief journey has led her into the deep questioning of her own identity and who she was without her Mom, and eventually learning to shed expectations of others, and coming home to herself.
