Episode description

First Saturday episode - plan for these is to be a little more casual and focus more on off the table / mental game stuff.

This episode spawned from a conversation I recently had w/ my betting partner on learning from those higher up the ladder from us.

Learn From Those Better Than You

Speaker 1

Yeah , like no one can beat the casino , it's like 99% of people lose and like we're winning and we're so great , blah , blah , blah , blah . It just doesn't serve you . Like that kind of thinking has never served me . Hey , what's up ? Gp13 here coming with the new Saturday podcast . So the new schedule , which I like a little bit more , is Tuesday , thursday .

Thursday is going to be the interview and then Saturday . So what I was thinking was Tuesday will be a little more like in the weeds sports betting topic that you go in . Maybe there's a little more theory , it's a little thicker , but it's going to be educational in the fact that , like it's technical .

Then , of course , on Thursday we'll have an interview , which is always great , kind of covers everything mindset , technical skills , edges , whatever it is . Then Saturday I was thinking a little more casual , but not casual as much , but mindset wise .

So away from what we would call in poker , like away from the table , or the mindset , the mental game , whatever it is . And I think it could be a little , maybe a little shorter , because it's like you have shit you actually want to do on a Saturday instead of commuting into work and whatnot . You actually have things to do .

So I'll keep it a little shorter . So today I wanted to kick it off with something that me and Dame Dalla , my partner , we're talking about , and it's the importance of understanding what people who are better than you are doing .

But I even want to take a step back , and it's that recognizing that there are people out there that know more than you is so important , because it's so much easier to be like oh , that person is better than me at golf betting and I'm listening to what they're saying very intently , following their tweets , whatever it is , and then , once they say something that

is insightful into their process , I can take that and add it to mine . To be able to do that , though , you have to let the ego go , which is hard to do , especially in sports betting . If you're a winning sports , better it's easy to fall , until these ego traps of , yeah , no one can beat the casino .

It's like 99% of people lose and we're winning and we're so great , blah , blah , blah , blah . It just doesn't serve you . That kind of thinking has never served me in the past , and I've certainly fallen into it , and it's never gotten me even decent results .

So I think it's important to always be curious and always be open to the fact that someone's probably doing something that's better than what you're doing and asking why Don't shut yourself off ? For example , let's say that your this conversation came up on Twitter . It was like the Jfar plus EV .

I don't want to rehash the whole conversation , but essentially it was like , just because someone isn't doing your process which might be , like you know , going on an odd screen , divvying the odds , whatever , finding those EV spots and doesn't mean that they don't know anything .

And even if they're losing better , slightly break even , they could have something to teach you . Like I listened to what I would call like more square golf content .

Again , like I'm not going to blast anybody , but like these are people that aren't winning betters or wouldn't be able to , as of right now , like survive on their betting P&L , but they also follow golf really , really closely and I pick up stuff from them all the time .

So like , just because someone knows ball and doesn't understand like the math behind betting , doesn't mean you can't pick up something from their process , and that's doubly true . Like from the people who are truly ahead of you in betting and there's definitely people that fall into that bucket for me .

And the quickest way to level up because , like here's , here's , there's two scenarios . One you get better , like you're the best , right , let's just say you're the best . And to get better you have to , like flail around in the dark and find , run into something , or find something that , like , improves your process , or find this new alpha .

That's very difficult , right , because there's like it's like when someone broke the whatever four minute mile or whatever it was , and then , like , everyone else started breaking it , but it took so long to break it because , a you don't know if it's possible . Like you're the best , is even possible for me to get better ?

Like probably , but you don't have proof of that . And then B , like how do I do it ? There's no road map . You know it's , it's your kind of flying blind . The other scenario is there's someone better than you , so you already have the mental proof . Like , oh , I can actually be . You know X amount better at this . Like they're making this amount betting .

You know the sport I bet and I'm only making Y . Like I can make at least that amount . And if I listen to them , you know if there's some type of public personality . Like if I listen to them and I can pick up like a little piece here . There they're showing me the road map , right , like whatever information I can get from them is helpful .

So I already believe that I can do this , plus , like I'm going to be shown like a certain percent of that you know , buy them and then , like , let's say , you're actually friends with them , that's even better . You know whatever it

Importance of Open-Mindedness in Learning

is . But it all stems from the fact that , like the thing that serves you , the mindset that serves you , isn't like I know everything and the way I'm , you know betting is the best way because you know what are you going to get out of that If you're open minded like yes , like a lot of people .

The problem is , like a lot of people in this industry are just like absolutely full of shit . So at first , like maybe it is good to be a little bit walled off onto , like who you listen to .

But once you start to get a better understanding of how things work , then you can find people who are , you know , think you might think , oh , you know they might know something . And even if they don't , you have like a BS radar and you know like what's important , what's not .

Like you wouldn't want to go to more of a like recreational , or you wouldn't want to go to somebody who , like , is an expert in the sport but doesn't bet , to learn about , like how to bet , for example .

But you would go to them because they might say something or they might have an insight into , like a rule change or how you know certain conditions are going to affect that week's event or that day's game , or potential like coaching tendencies , right . So you just have to like think about what did they know better than me ? And then can I use it .

Usually it's no , but it's worth looking for . So , anyway , that's just the quick Saturday episode . I don't know , like , if people like this format or not , but I feel like it's a little more casual but a little more fun . Great , everyone , and I will see you on the next episode .
