The Welsh word 'hiraeth' is loosely translated to mean (n.) a homesickness or longing for a place you cannot return to, a home that may not have ever been—a yearning, a grief for a place that can never be revisited. Such grief and longing are experienced by children of divorce, addiction/alcoholism, death of parents, abandonment, who may feel orphaned by those experiences. These events ruptured their emotional development into adulthood, leaving them unable to articulate feelings of powerlessness and longing. Essentially, the orphan was left with no home base and no hope of changing the outcome. This orphan manifests in different ways during adulthood and can take many years to identify and heal.
