The Importance of Getting Uncomfortable

To be comfortable in life , you have to be uncomfortable . Let me explain . Hello and welcome to the Property Unleashed podcast with me , or host Mark Fitzgerald . It's great to have you joining me here today . So if you are new to the podcast , welcome . It's always great to have you .

If you are a repeat listener , thank you very much for being a repeat listener and for sticking with this channel . We've had a lot of downloads recently so I wanted to come on here and I wanted to thank everybody who's supported this channel , who supported the podcast itself .

Some people have been here from the beginning as well , so it's great to have you all here . I really do appreciate the support . I really do appreciate the feedback , the comments and , of course , you know I'm here to help in any way I can . I do the podcast basically for the love of helping others .

I obviously have a lot of work that I do in my own life with my property investing , with my rent-to-rent businesses , the HMOs , the service accommodations . I also help and work with other companies as well as a subcontractor . So I have a lot going on in my life and people do say to me you still put out . You know , two episodes a week .

You still put a lot out there and you don't really need to . Why do you keep doing this ? And I think it's a very , very good question and it relates back to what I said at the very beginning of this podcast episode , and it is you know , to be comfortable in life , you have to be uncomfortable . Now , what do I mean by that ?

Well , basically , when was the last time you sat around ? You did nothing and you actually felt comfortable . You were enjoying yourself . You were enjoying your life .

I bet you , most of the time when you've actually put yourself out there , you've actually gone out there and you've tried to achieve something or have achieved something , you've got off your backside and you've done it , you felt more comfortable .

You know , if we're in a job and we're basically not doing the work that we should be doing , that we're getting paid to do , we're just doing enough to keep us from getting fired , you're not comfortable . You're not sat in a comfortable position .

You're always looking over your shoulder , whereas if you're doing an absolutely amazing job and you're delivering on what it says you're going to be doing , then you would be feeling a lot more comfortable . So it all boils down to comfort is what you think it is and what you make of it as well . So I feel more comfortable being busy .

You know , right now I am having a bit of time off . I have , you know , had a bit of a procedure , which you know I've well documented as well , I'm not going to waffle on about it here and I don't feel very comfortable .

Things are working , my businesses are still functioning , the people in my businesses are doing a fantastic job , but me myself , I do not like not being busy , not being out there and not working hard . I enjoy and I love what I do , and I think that's what the difference is when you actually love what you do , it doesn't feel like work .

But do I feel comfortable ? Right here and now ? Sat back . People say to me do you think about retirement ? What would you do ? Go and retire ? Onto a beach or any ? I can't think of anything worse as far as I'm concerned , right here and now . I never want to retire .

Okay , I always want to keep doing the things that I want to do , the things that I love to do . Do I have to do things that I don't always want to do ? Yes , okay , in an ideal world I wouldn't have to . I could pay everybody else to do all the things that I don't like , but I'm still not 100% there .

A lot of the stuff that I don't like I don't do anymore and I have outsourced , but there's still certain things that I don't like doing but yet need me to be there , and that's okay . But what I'm trying to say to you out there now is , if you're listening to this podcast episode and you're thinking to yourself I want to start something for myself .

I want to start my own property business . I want to start my own rent to rent business . I want to get out there . I want to get more income coming . I want to have time freedom . It's all achievable , okay , it's all absolutely achievable .

But you're going to have to get uncomfortable , and that is what a lot of people don't like and that is why a lot of people fail . They do not like the discomfort , they do not like to be uncomfortable . They do not like to have the conversations with people where they feel less adequate or inadequate , should I say , when they're going to talk to agents .

Sometimes people think , oh , the agents . They put these agents on this big pedestal and then when they talk to them and they almost like let the agents talk down to them , because all the almighty agents who've been doing this for years know more than us . That's just our own minds playing tricks on us . There's human beings , that people just like us .

So it's having those sort of conversations when yes , in the beginning they will be uncomfortable . Ok , you might not 100% know what you're going to be saying and things like that , and that's fine , that's all part and parcel of the process and it's just repetition of putting yourself out there . But guess what ?

If you do it , you're more likely to get a deal , you're more likely to start getting results and you know what You'll also realize as I did because I was very much like this when I started , which is why I'm saying it to you , because it comes from first-hand knowledge you'll actually get out there , you'll get better at it , you'll get more confident with it

and you will start to enjoy it . So what initially starts as being very uncomfortable can all of a sudden , with a bit of repetition and a bit of knowledge and a bit of doing the right things , become comfortable . And then you want to be seeking how to make yourself uncomfortable on the next challenge , the next deal , the next negotiations .

How can you keep stretching yourself , because when you are in an uncomfortable position or place in your life , you are growing as a human being . You are getting better , you're getting more resourceful and you are moving yourself into the direction of who you want to become . So if you sat there now and you've just started out , maybe you have started .

Maybe you've got a couple of properties , or maybe you haven't . Maybe you're still deciding how am I going to do this ? I don't have any money . I can't pay for education , I can't pay for property deals or anything like that . That is just limiting beliefs .

You've got to think to yourself OK , so if I was uncomfortable now for the next six months , I maybe I downgraded my phone package God forbid .

Maybe I cancelled the sky , maybe I didn't have a takeaway every week , maybe I didn't go out drinking every weekend and I put all of that money to one side to start building a property business , to start investing in myself and moving myself forward . Do you not think that you would be able to change your life and you wouldn't have to do this forever ?

So many people look at the here and the now . It's just exactly the same when you're doing a diet you go on to a diet because you want to lose weight . At first , you're all passionate about it . I'm going to do this . I'm going to make this a lifestyle choice . I'm going to skip the pizza , I'm going to skip the desserts . I'm going to get out there .

I'm going to eat the salads , I'm going to eat the healthy food and then , all of a sudden , after the novelty wears off , ie , you've got started . You're all of a sudden , your subconscious starts thinking about and looking at what you're missing , rather than what you're actually gaining and the benefits and how that's helping you . And it's exactly the same .

When you start anything new as well , you will start to think what do I have to sacrifice ? The here and now ? Am I willing to do it ? And a lot of the times , you're not willing to do it . You think you are , but you're not . So you'll get a month in , you'll get two months in , maybe even three months , which I always find is the golden goose .

The third month is where you either lay the golden egg and you keep going , or you give up and you try something else which is a little more comfortable , which is a little easier , because it won't work . I can't get out there . I can't start this property business . There's too many people doing it , they're saturated .

In my area , nobody wants to do deals with me and all of the time you're just fueling your subconscious to agree with you , to agree with you and tell you yes , mark , it's not going to work . You need to stop this . You need to go and sit down over there and not try any of this , because then we'll be nice and comfortable .

And this is the moments where you need to make sure that you've surrounded yourself with like-minded people who are driven , or you have a coach , or you have a mentor , or you have somebody you can reach out to and say I'm starting to feel demoralized , I'm starting to not feel the motivation that I had before there , where they can put their arm around you or

they can kick you up the backside and tell you this is all part of the process . You've just got to keep going . You've got to be consistent and persistent in what you are doing , because that will reap results .

And the more uncomfortable you feel and are , the closer you probably are of getting to get those deals , of building that business , of changing your life , of building the life that you desire and the life that you want , okay , so you have to really start embracing being uncomfortable , feeling uncomfortable , feeling nervous , okay .

There's a lot of people that I see now who are very timid , very quiet . When I start in our training programs they come on the coaching course A lot of times . You've really got to entice them , to get them to turn their cameras on and things , because we like people to be engaged . But by the first month they've got to know everybody .

They're not feeling as uncomfortable anymore . They're asking lots of questions . They're really getting involved . Why ? Because they've gotten over the uncomfortableness of it all , okay , which is only in their own head as well .

When I first went on a Zoom call which was a coaching call , actually , and I'd never used Zoom before , I just downloaded it , so that goes back to how far , how long ago this was I didn't particularly want to turn my camera on . I don't really know why , but it was all new to me and I just thought I'll sit here . I can speak if I need to .

Nobody needs to see my face . So I've been there myself . I've been there . I know what it feels like . Sometimes we don't want to turn the camera on , but when you don't want to do something , force yourself to do it as long as it's sensible and as long as it's the right thing to do .

But when you are even a silly little thing , like turning your camera on and participating on a Zoom call , with whatever it is you're doing , force yourself to do it , even when you don't want to do it . Okay , because that is going to start to build those healthy habits that can help you then with whatever it else you're trying to do .

If you're trying to get out of your nine to five jobs , you're trying to build that property business , you're trying to get out there , you're trying to get hold of those service accommodation units or those HMOs , all you need to do is make sure that you're doing the right actions and that you are comfortable , being uncomfortable , and you surround yourself with the

right people , okay . So what I say to you now is the next time you start to feel nervous about doing something , embrace the nerves . Okay , nerves are brilliant . Why ? Because they show , one , you're passionate about what it is you're doing and two , you're alive .

There will be a million people that potentially want to be doing what you're getting nervous about , but can't , for whatever reason . But you get to do it . So change your thinking . Don't think to yourself oh , I have to go and talk to those agents , I have to go and do this .

Change that and start saying to yourself I get to talk to those agents , I get to go and have negotiations with those landlords , I get to get out there and do this . I get to go to networking events , I get to purchase training or self-development or books . I get to do it . Not I have to do it , you get to do it .

You have the opportunity to choose whether to do it or not . To do it , okay . What you have to do is start just changing how you talk to yourself . So when you're uncomfortable , when you're nervous , embrace it , take it on board and say to yourself I am alive and I'm where I need to be . Why ? Because when you feel like that , you are growing .

Why have we got two separate ones ? A lot of people get confused , actually , with that . I'll just put that to bed right here and now . Rent to Rent business builder let's talk a little bit about service to accommodation , but it's predominantly all about HMOs and how to set up and systemise that business .

The reason we did the ultimate service to accommodation business builder was so that people could come in who just wanted to focus solely on service To accommodation , whether it's doing it with rent to rent and everything . We go through all the strategies with you , but it's just how to build a service to accommodation business . Why ?

Because you don't want to be doing both . Okay , if you go out there and somebody is going to train you how to do HMOs and service to accommodation at the same time , you're going to muddle yourself up and you're probably not going to achieve a great deal .

Where you want to pick one strategy , you want to go now that strategy and then you can do the other strategy afterwards . Okay , but get comfortable doing one strategy , get the cash flow coming through and then you can go out there and do whatever you want to . I did the HMO strategy to start off with , so I knew the money that was coming in .

And then , of course , as I've said many a Time , I then started to do service to accommodation , which is why now we offer the service to accommodation business builder with Graham Lindley , who has over 350 while I'm growing probably more than that now Service to accommodation units , so he is my resident trainer on that program .

Anyway , that got sat out of way . Let's get back to being uncomfortable and Growing as a person . So please , please , please , please , if you do only one thing after listening to this podcast it is embracing nerves .

It is embracing being uncomfortable when you're sat on the sofa and the time is coming for you to leave , maybe to go to a networking event , to get out there to start meeting other property investors , and it's raining and it's horrible weather . And you're thinking to yourself I've had a really bad day and I just cannot be bothered to go out there and do it .

You're feeling uncomfortable . It's nice and cozy here . I'm feeling comfortable . I tell you what I'll do . I'll go next month . It's not going to be a massive end of the world , is it ? Go and do it , force yourself out , say I'm going to do it same as the gym .

Well , you know , a lot of times when we want to go to the gym site , I can't be bothered with telling ourselves a million one things reasons why not to do something . I'm not going to do it , I'm not going to do it .

And then you talk yourself out of it , you don't do it and you feel crap and you think I'll make up for it the next day and a lot of times you won't . It'll be that I'll start again next week . And then time drifts before you know it . Months have passed , years have passed , and that was me 16 years in the corporate world .

Five of those years Wanted to get out of the corporate world and I just kept spinning my wheels saying I'll do it tomorrow , I'll start tomorrow , never wanted to get uncomfortable , never wanted to push myself . And I tell you what , as soon as I did , my life changed . And that is what I want for you . Okay , don't let anything hold you back .

Don't let money hold you back . Don't let knowledge hold you back . Don't let yourself or others around you hold you back . You have to have that mental toughness to be able to get out there and to be able to make things happen . When I started my property journey , a lot of other people were doing exactly the same thing .

I still see a lot of those people now , but a lot of them have fallen by the wayside and have gone off now to try and all sorts of different things , and some of them have never changed . They've never changed , they've never really taken . They've never really taken the knowledge that they got and moved forward on it , and they're still in the same jobs .

They're still hating life , they're still saying that they're gonna start tomorrow , and I don't want that to be everybody else . By hook up , by crook , you have to make it happen . Okay , now , if we can help with that in any way , shape or form , then please reach out to us .

Okay , so Make sure that on this journey , you are ready to feel uncomfortable and embrace it , enjoy it . When you're nervous , you're alive . That's what life's all about . Okay , make sure that whatever you're doing , you give it a higher purpose than just money , than just financial gain .

I Always wanted to do it for my children , my two boys , jack and Lewis , who are my why . They are my everything , as is my wife . But my boys are who I really did want to prove to them that you don't just have to do the nine to five , you don't just have to go to college or university .

I mean , my oldest boy at the moment is doing very , very well at basketball . He's at college . He was been looking at university and he's thinking of having a gap year and I'm actually very proud of him for that very clever lad Very clever lad wants to sort of have a gap year and find himself and I think that's probably actually a great thing to do .

So why I support him on whatever he wants to do wants to go to university , he wants to go to university . You want to have a gap year , wants to have a gap year . But he is also thinking about starting his own business nothing to do with property .

He's thinking to start his own business and I would like to be there and I am there to give him a hundred percent support In what he's trying to do and what he is actually trying to do is very Good . It is actually makes a lot of sense and I think he'd be very , very good at it . And I'm not pushing him . He's coming to me with the ideas .

But I don't mind being a business partner to my son , if I can , or a mentor or a coach . Why ? Because I've been there and done it myself , so by helping him , I'm absolutely Chosen . I think it's absolutely amazing . I'm over the moon is the word . I'm almost got emotional there . I'm over the moon With being able to support my kids like that .

And this is the reason why I do what I do , because if I can help you , to be able to go out there and help people yourself , help your family , help your loved ones as well , then , hell , we can make the world a better place . And that sounds really , really corny , and I said that and I've thought to myself I might delete that out .

But I'm not going to delete it out because at the end of the day , we are you know the world spins and goes around and everything but we are here for a short space of time . So let's maximize that time with no regrets .

Let's get out there , let's make things happen and let's make people the loved ones that we have around us proud of us and if they're not , just make sure that you're proud of yourself . Okay , don't ever like yourself because , first and foremost , you have to live with you . You need to like you and if you're lying to yourself , then that's not great .

People who go out there and cheat and and do things behind people's backs and and moan about people behind their backs and everything like that they are really just doing themselves a misjustice . If you cheat on anybody , it's not how you've affected or hurt that person . It's actually yourself that you want to look at first . Have you affected or hurt yourself ?

So if you cheat or do anything like that , remember you're hurting yourself . This is a whole new topic , this is another podcast episode , but you're hurting yourself , okay , first and foremost , because you're lying to yourself , you're cheating on yourself and you're not being true to yourself and that will , in your subconscious mind , start playing tricks on you .
