Effective Strategies for Overcoming Procrastination

Speaker 1

Five ways to overcome procrastination .

I have to say I am a champion when it comes to procrastination , so I do have to use these five methods that I'm going to share with you today to help me get out there and , of course , achieve the results that I'm going to share with you today to help me get out there and , of course , achieve the results that I want , and , of course , I'm always striving

to achieve those results as well .

So one of the things that you do want to make sure that you do is write down , journal everything that it is that you're trying to do , so that you can go back and review it , because we never feel at times that we are moving forward , even when we are , and if we have nothing to be able to review those times , then we will struggle .

So , firstly , step one , if you like . I would say anything that you're trying to achieve , goal wise . You want to break down into bite sized trunks ? Ok , you want to make sure that you're not just focusing on the end result that could potentially be a long way away .

You wanna be focusing on what is the first thing that I need to do to start me moving forward , and I like to look at this as a step-by-step process where you're looking maybe even to go up a ladder . Okay . So if you thought what's the first step on the ladder gonna be , well , I need to do this , okay . What's the second step ? What's the third step ?

And then potentially , as you're walking up that ladder , you will get to the peak , you will get to the goal , you will get where you want to . Now what I tend to do is I tend to then find another length of that ladder and I never stop . It always feels like I'm always continuing and I bet you any money you've done the same thing , I bet .

You've set goals , lofty goals up there , and then , when you've got close to those goals , all of a sudden you've forgotten about that , because that goal is quite small . There's a bigger picture , a bigger goal above it , and you do pull out that length of the ladder again and you continue again .

So just continue to break it down , don't get overwhelmed , but make sure , obviously , you review what you have been doing . At number two , make sure that you set specific and realistic targets . Okay , tasks on a day-to-day level . You'll have heard me say this before , but you want to be winning the day , okay ?

Andy Fussellet speaks about this on his podcast and things , and it's a methodology that I've taken into my own business , which is try and make sure that you win the day . So he recommends that you set out five tasks and you hit those tasks each and every day and if you do , you can tick it off and win the day .

I like to break that down a bit further Now . We're all busy . We've all got things that can get in our way Family things , business things , work things . It can be very , very tricky to actually get the results you want . What I say is to have three things . Keep it easy .

Trust me Again , we'll have all had those to-do lists that are massive , that are this big , okay , and we're trying to do all of that in a day , and we get to the end of the day and we're like I haven't even ticked anything off . I've ticked two things off . Oh , I'm such a failure , I'm such a loser .

I'm never going to be able to achieve what everybody else is . Why ? Because we put too much pressure on ourselves . So what I say to you is have three things . Now one thing has to be done you have to do . Are some serious circumstances out there can achieve one task a day . Why do you have three , then ? Mark ?

Well , because sometimes you can only do so much on one task and you're waiting for outside sources other people , to do things and stuff . So if that's the case , you can move on to task two . Now you might get task one done as well and still have a lot of the day left and feel really energetic and that you want to get more done .

Then you can go for task two and potentially task three . But three tasks a day if you can get through those is amazing . But just hit one , hit one task . If I get that one thing done that I've set out today , I can give it my tick and I can win the day and start stacking the wins . Why ?

Because you're telling yourself that you are a winner , that you can achieve everything that you're trying to achieve and push yourself forward out there . And I love this because I love to tick or cross things off to say I've done it , I've successfully achieved each and every day what I want to do . And then you start to get on a run .

If you document this , keep it in a diary , keep it in your phone notes , whatever , but start documenting it so that you can see . Each and every time , you'll start to get up a winning feeling and you'll start to say to yourself oh my God , it's getting close to the end of the day . I haven't done that one thing yet .

I need to get that done because I don't want to stop my winning streak . You start winning the day . You start winning the week . You start winning the week , you start winning the month that , of course and you start winning the months . You'll win the year . In 12 months time , you'll be in a completely different position than you are right now .

So set those specific targets and tasks , make them realistic and make sure that you can achieve them . Create a structured schedule A that means that you can realistically hit those targets . Plan out your weeks before you get there . Ok , things will change , diaries can change and things . Everybody's got busy schedules .

But spend maybe the Friday I like to do it on the Friday before the following week . Work out what I'm going to be doing that week . Look at my schedule . What is in the schedule , what's already there and what can I achieve . Don't say I've got one task to do . It's going to take you a full day .

Yet you're going to be working for five days okay , and you set it on Monday . You can't do it Monday , can't do it Tuesday , and you know full well that you can't do it . Set it for a day when you can do it , potentially when you've got a day off .

Okay , if you've got those one tasks and they are the things that you really want to do , but you've only got a limited amount of time on different days . Set what you think you can do in that time scale , okay , as long as you are getting things done , you're all right .

But if you set yourself up for a failure and you do not schedule your calendar properly and ie make sure that your schedule is planned out before you start the day , before you start the week , that is critical to your success . It's all in the planning . Everybody knows that . Nobody goes to battle , nobody goes on sports teams . They don't go without a plan .

Everybody has a game plan . Have a game plan for your life and it will supercharge your results . Of course , at number four , you can use some productivity hacks . Okay , the 80-20 principle as well . But what I like to do is I like to plan out my time .

Okay , so I like to say right , I've got 20 minutes , I'm going to do nothing for 20 minutes than this one task . And let's get it nailed , a maximum of 60 minutes . Okay , if you can find 60 minutes a day to get one thing done , or maybe even three things done . If you've got those three tasks , you're laughing . But for that time , switch your phone off .

What did he just say ? Switch your phone off and put it in another room . Stick it on silent . Don't have any notifications on anything . Switch everything else off so you can just focus on that one thing . Focus on that one thing . Don't be easily distracted . Go and have a 20-minute session with nothing else phasing you .

You're just solidly working for 20 minutes and if you hit that and set a timer as well , which isn't on your phone , have a separate timer that's not going to have notifications and things like that on it , but set that timer and when you get it , reward yourself .

Go and have a coffee , go and have something to eat , move around , go and have five minutes on your phone . If you're struggling , you know leaving your phone anywhere else , but make sure that you don't have any distractions on that . I'm terrible at this , absolutely terrible .

So I really do have to put my phone outside of my office and then get on with it , and then I can go and have a look at my phone . I have an Apple watch . I have to turn all the notifications off on that . Everybody , every system , every technology device that we have around us wants your attention .

It gets paid for your attention with the apps and everything that are on there . So lock it out . Remember this is your business , this is your life and you want to lead the best life that you can possibly lead . So don't be easily distracted . Get in there , have those sessions , focus on that one thing and , of course , get out there and do it .

So one of the things that we could be procrastinating on could be fear , fear of failure , fear of getting out there trying to do something and it not working for us . Set us back . We'll hold us back . We'll stop us from becoming motivated and driven because we have this underlining problem . I say stop . Find out what it is .

If you're sat there now and you want to start doing something , maybe you want to get out there and build your own business in whatever it is that you're looking at achieving , but you're not doing it for some reason . You know it's good , you've written about it , you've learned about it . You just need to take the actions now .

But you're not taking the actions . You procrastinate . You do maybe the fluffy things that don't really ever push you forward . Ask yourself why and be honest with yourself as well . Really honest with yourself . We all have it and a lot of the times it's just the moods that we're in when it comes to our own brain patterns and things .

Some days we're up for it . We'll take on the world . We don't care if we make a mistake . We don't care if we fail . Why ? Because we're going to get out there and we're going to do it . And then we have a bad night's sleep or we have an argument with somebody , or we're just not really in a very good mood .

We've got up a bit grumpy and all of a sudden our brains will start talking to us , start talking us out of why we should be doing things , of why we're doing this , why we're doing that . It's not your comfort zone to be doing this .

Mark , sit back down , get back in your comfort zone , play on your phone , do the things that we enjoy doing , that are nice and safe . Don't be pushing yourself out there . Why , why would you push it ? All of these things go into our minds at different times . We'll have all had it at some point , but some people will ignore them .

Okay , and it's about recognizing why

Overcoming Procrastination Tips and Skills

you're getting them . So start writing down , start journalling why you are procrastinating , why . Why is it that I'm trying to do this and I just can't do it ? What is stopping me ? Yeah , I think I'm worried . I think it's a fear realistic .

If I tell everybody I'm doing this and I don't do it , they'll all think I'm a liar , or I can't do it or it's just our minds . Most of the time and remember this most of the time , people aren't even thinking about you . They're thinking about them and what they're up to . So don't worry about what anybody else thinks . Just remember .

You can only control you , and by taking these actions , particularly on the days that you don't want to , taking these actions , particularly on the days that you don't want to , you will set yourself above and ahead of everybody else out there .

I hope these five procrastination skills , tips , methods have helped you and I hope you've enjoyed this episode and I look forward to you joining me in the next episode . Why not now ?
