Welcome to the Potter discussion.

well, welcome back to the Potter of discussion, discussing Harry Potter, fantastic beasts and the Wizarding world fandom. I am your host Oscar, and this is episode 132. Today. We are talking all about the Mirage. And what a fantastic episode, this is going to be not only because the marauders are mysterious and fun and exciting, but also because this is the first episode that we've had in more than a month, that is a way from a secret or Dumbledore and the curse of child.

I adore both of those things, but I am definitely glad to, uh, move on and get onto these. Uh, exciting topics such as such as the marauders. So I'm definitely happy to be here recording today. And I actually got to write an episode this week. That was fun. Um, I didn't have to, uh, I didn't like go back in the document that was old and just like check out where I'd stopped.

So this was a, a, a very fun and exciting week for me personally. Thank you for all your support. I, I got to write an episode. I got to, uh, do all the fun things that I always do. And now we're back into the swing of things. And actually this was a very special episode. We'll not just say this is a very special episode because not only is this a, the first episode since all the reviews, but also this idea comes from the Google form.

I was scrolling through other responses and this one just really caught my eye and I had to do an episode on it. Uh, this idea was submitted. Toby. Thank you, Toby on the Google form and thank you for spending everything, all your ideas, all your support. Thank you for all that. Uh, but Toby shout out to you.

While I give you two of my favorite details from every movie that you may have missed, I will make your watching experience just that much better. That link will be in the show notes along all the things I just mentioned. Uh, but let's get into today's. So to kick things off, I think it's important to just go over really?

Who are the marauders and what are all of their relations to Harry? So I think this is on that. I mean, pretty obvious, like move, we all know who the marauders are, but it's just really kind of going to feed into a deeper topic of really what they're doing, uh, what their, their motivation is. And this is a very, uh, I think, uh, a deep discussion.

I think we'll definitely get into that later, but really we'll start on the surface who are the marauders where we have. Warm tail pat fit and prongs that is there. Those are, they're like fake. No, like, like, like, oh, I want to say rapper names, but it's not a really, that's like what they could. That's like, there's a layer there, there, nicknames.

Mooney is obviously Lupe and Remus Lupin, who was. Defending against the dark arts teacher in the third year. And Lupin is aware of those habits, be aware well, and they call him Mooney because the moon werewolf, you know, and Mooney, we also have worm tail warm tail is Peter. Warm tail because he eternity transforms into a rat and that's just how his friends were like, you have a warm towel.

And then he was like, oh really? And then they just said, yep, your name's warm now. So good job. Peter also was the one who ride it out. Uh, um, Lily and Jane. And then Mooney, Rodel pad, foot pad foot is serious black Harry's godfather. They call him pat foot because he turns into a large black dog. And I think she's the one that Harry probably has the closest connection to obviously outside of his father.

And then finally. Prongs, which is Harry's father James Potter, who turns into a stag. And that's also Harris Patronis. And that's why Harry thinks that, uh, he saw his father on the night, the dementors came to take serious and the lake, which is, I mean, the scene that was like, that was, that was confusing to me because what I thought, what was going to happen.

And that's, this is a little bit of a side note. So when, when Harry was going on about how, like he, she saw his dad and then he's going to up here, Any second, right, right in front of him. And you know, that, that, that whole deal, I genuinely thought that Harry's father was going to appear. And it confused me when he didn't, because I thought that Harry, whatever the Harry saw was really his father.

And then the rest of the series is going to be about how he was trying to like, find his dad because he actually wasn't. But I mean, obviously that, that wasn't, that wasn't really happening, but that for some reason was, was just floating around in my head. That's that's what I felt was going to happen.

That's I genuinely thought that that's what happened. It took me until Harry, you know, jumped out until Harry realized it, that I realized that it was Harry, not his dad. And it was, oh, you look like your father Harry and oh yes I do. Now I know that, you know, it was, it was that homeowner that I really came to realize that it was not James, that was standing on the rocket was.

That was confusing. Uh, but that is kind of the, who are they part of this, but also the relation to Harry? I think this is one that is kind of where these four are differentiated, because if you just got their names, what they did, you would feel like they were the same person, which I think is not a good thing for this discussion, especially because we were talking about how different they are.

So going through the list again, Mooney, lupus, W w where Harry and lupins relationship started was the third year when Lupin was Harry's defensing. And so the Dockers teacher, um, because this is really the first quality teacher and I'm going to go with the last, um, because everyone was, there were good.

Snape is a very, very good wizard. Bardy crouch Jr. Is a very, very good wizard. Um, bridge is a skilled, which I'm going to go with that. There are good teachers, but they all have something wrong about them. And I think that's something wrong was looping being a werewolf, but that was something that didn't happen very often.

Obviously. Full moon once a month. Obviously it was a huge drain on Lupin, but it was still only once. So it wasn't this like huge damper on his like overall personality. If that was the case, then I don't know if Harry would have been so fond of him, but they definitely Harry and live in red, definitely formed a very strong relationship and that could continue when they met back with each other in the order of.

When, like when the bid obviously is in the order of the Phoenix. So when heroine to number 12 grown place, that that relationship could continue on and kind of be carried over from, from like between Harry's lives. And I think if Matt, I moody had a really taught Harry, um, I think that also would have been up there.

I think that definitely would have been number two on the list of best defense against the arts teachers, because he, I mean, so if, if, if Matt. Was a teacher. If, if it was really him, then I think like I, yeah, like I said, they were definitely the best because he is a good wizard. He's a skilled weathers that I think will obviously show and he is on the good side.

So that's the combination that we really need and he is a bit intense. But he's, he's a defense against the Docker shisha, which kind of makes that his job. So that's kinda what I want to go on with here. I, between Lupin and Harry, a good relationship I've started that continued over and was a very, uh, very good, uh, starting relationship for, for Harry and Lubin.

Now off of Mooney, you know, Warm tail. This is the worst relationship of the four because Peter butter grew worm, tail, whatever you want to call him. He was the one who ratted again, ran it out. Lilian James Potter to Voldemort's leading to their deaths. Obviously this fact was not revealed until the very end of the prisoner basket man, because that's kinda the whole premise of the book.

Everything says serious, who did it, but it's not it's Peter. And then they kind of realize. And Harriet and Sirius become friends, which is how their relationship started. But with Peter, Harry learned that it was Peter who did that. And then he really, I mean, obviously he despised Peter after that. So that's a, I mean automatically a very unhealthy and quite, quite detrimental relationship.

Definitely not in good shape. Harry I've usually like overall hates Peter. I think that's a, a fair way of putting it and really, I mean, the only thing we need to say, and I, Harry hates pay Peter and Peter. I mean, not really the brightest bulb in the box, so that's kind of a, where we have to end there. So when we start pad, foot, pad, foot, this is another one of the best relationships Harry has just in general with serious with Patrick was serious.

Now this is. Seriously Sarah's godfather and he understands Harry. And in S I think, I think this is, uh, this is where kind of the more, you know, deeper side of, of the hair's relationship with yours kind of comes into play because reading the books and really seeing their interactions and the different lines I made, like with hair between Harry and serious, what I kind of think is that.

Harry sees serious as James and as serious CS Harry as James. And I think that's why their relationship is so strong because they both share attributes that James shared that James had, which was why, which was like the common denominator between them and why they managed to strike it off so well, because.

This year he is, is, is the father figure that Harry never had. And he was the closest person to James. He knew everything serious, knew everything about James. They were like the best of friends. They pulled all their pranks. They were a real team. And I think Harry saw that and really appreciate. And it's, the reverse is true with serious, serious sees Harry and only sees, you know, James the school boy in his golden days, he was, you know, a, a good wizard.

He was kind of the leader of the pack. So both of these people see each other as the one person they miss the most. Uh, so it's, you can see how they're automatically drawn to each other and automatically approved. Everything about the other, which is, I mean, like automatically going to form a fantastic relationship, which is why they did so that I think is a very important aspect of, of their, of, of Harry's life and serious his life too.

Especially when they can't talk to each other as much with the order of the Phoenix, you know, sending letters, they can't communicate as much. Harry does not enjoy that, but he knows that Sirius is looking out for him. As much as he might be annoying, Harry and Sirius are definitely a, a, a very, very good team.

And now from serious, we've talked about Mooney where I'm tell pat foot now on to prongs. We have James, this I'd say is the most confusing because there really is no relationship between Harry and James. When I think there was maybe. Well, just like a year of overlap. Maybe that Jane, when, when Harris' parents and Harriet were alive at the same time, because we saw in some memories, I believe from Voldemort that, or like, we, we, we know that James and Harry existed in the same timeline.

Uh, one point obviously that time was cut short, very abruptly, but I think that wasn't how Harry remembers. I think Harry remembers his father by all the pictures he has, but all the stories you hear and by the mirror, I think that's, that's another big, big part of it because obviously, you know, you're, you look like Jane, but you have your mother's eyes is like the line that Harry hears.

So he knows that he looks like James and that's how he remembers him. And. With all the stories that he hears. I think one of the starting things that really got Harry on the path of trying to know his father is the picture book that Hagrid Gibbs Harry for his first Christmas, I believe in Hogwarts, it is.

And that gives a chance to Harry to see his parents dancing and having fun and laughing and just enjoying themselves. Yeah. As far as that picture of them on his nightstand. So it's this combination of just kind of remembering the stories and understanding what other people thought of them. Because I think what we can infringe is they weren't bad people, which I think is why Harry then goes on to be like, okay, these are not, you know, these like strange people that you know are just like killed because, and then that's really where this whole thing kind of roots and is the most pressing.

So that's a kind of a foundation, a, an overview of really who the marauders are now. I want to get into their significance and really what they do in story and why they stand out. Because I think this is another one of those elements that doesn't make sense until you really look at it. So obviously these are just.

For people, just for people going around Hogwarts and the name Potter doesn't mean anything. The name black doesn't mean anything because they're students, they're students. So you're just black. Hasn't been all, uh, it hasn't been accused of a murder and Potter the name Potter hasn't been associated with Voldemort.

They're just four people. So why do they become so important? Now? The obvious answer is, well, obviously the main character Harry is Harry. So we know of them. Uh, maybe, maybe that's true, but I think they become such a big deal because of the reasons I just mentioned, because they aren't so important. And that's why it feeds into this idea because Harry is in this similar situation as James and as yours and as Peter and Lupin when he is finding out about them.

So when we find out about these, these, uh, about the marauders in, and it kind of, kind of by proxy, we are finding out more about Harry. I kind of understand. When it's like to be alive in, in this, this world of Hogwarts. And I think it also kind of acts as a way for Harry to see his, his parents. So parent, like naturally, but he, he does see Lily in some manner.

Um, so he, he can kind of experience that, but also, um, like, like I was saying before, uh, James Potter and the Lee Potter are killed, so they imparted becomes famous Harry, then it goes to school, which, and it makes even more famous, serious. Black is, uh, is accused of killing a bunch of people. Peter pedigree was the person who outed.

We're not out actually say who ratted out, uh, Lillian James to hold the Moore and, uh, Lupron. A werewolf who then goes to teach at Hogwarts, which is apparently this big scandal all across another Wizarding world. All these people don't mean anything in the beginning, but they become so much more in their adulthood and in their future.

And they really kind of grow into these roles. These posts of, I will say, have fame. They are well-known, they are well-known people. And I think they kind of grow that reputation at school then is boosted by all the, the, uh, you know, fantastical things that happen to them. That's also because I think James and Sirius were kind of leading.

This, I'm going to say cult that this kind of culture of, uh, make fun of all the people who can't defend themselves, use magic and appropriately, you know, kind of take over Hogwarts and treat it as your own kind of playground. And Harry, his dad was kind of a not nice person, you know, if you know what I mean.

Um, and that's, I think a fact that we kind of had to, had to gloss over because it's James area's dad. Of course, he's nice. You know, of course he's not nice. Anyway, he's got his bag out of the memory, you know, so we didn't really get to see much of, of that kind of thing. And I think, unfortunately, that did kind of, uh, uh, lead us into a, a state of not really understanding a lot about them, except for the fact that they did a bunch of cool stuff.

And so I think that's, that's kind of why they like, why, why they are such a big deal because they grow their sphere of influence so quickly at Hogwarts by kind of asserting their dominance. But they also, their name means becomes so much more than just a, you know, a, I don't, I dunno what you would call it.

It's not something people like shut our ad because they're, they're scared that they might be next. It's something that people are. Oh, okay. Like I can see, or this is kind of going, you know, so I think there's a lot of, of kind of mystery around their, their past lives, but we can kind of come out of that fog and really understand who they are in their future ones, because not only do we see really who they are, but we see why they are and really where they've come from and why everything they do is.

Now I want to dive into the backstory of the Marauder who we saw and his, his, his past was kind of explained, but we never really got the full picture. And I think that lead led to his character being so interesting. And that person is looping. So lupins, whole thing, his whole. Problem his, his flaw and his entry into the group of the marauders is his being a werewolf.

Now this is certainly a, not a, not a fun thing to be dealing with, but it can be dealt with, with the Wolfsbane potion and with just, you know, hiding basically. So it's painful. It's, it's kinda sucks, but Lubin can deal with it and he's used to it. And. So is it though, that's kind of the question that we're wondering here, because we do get a small backstory on Lupin.

What we learn is that his, as he was, he was bitten as a child, which was, which is fender, rear gray box preferred target. And then from then on, he was a werewolf. They couldn't find a cure because his parents like refuse to give information and hold the, something like that. So it was suddenly like that.

This is something that Toby and the Google forum was also talking about was why did he do that? Why did fender a gray back bite Lupin, and also kind of where, where did that come from and what, what was finger gray backs motivation? So this is a part of the story that is a bit more kind of covered up a bit more muddled and that's because fender gray bag is this.

Kind of hybrid of a person. He is aware Wolf, but he is kind of embodied the wearable spirit so much that he doesn't transform because he's so close to werewolf is in his human form that he. Is a werewolf. He just, he exists as a werewolf. He feeds on every night and he has no limit of what he, he, he does, which is why he's also such a terrifying force because he like you, you can like wall up your doors one night.

One night a month, but you can do it every single second of every single day, which is why he's such a, a unfortunate person to, for, to be on one side. What was he thinking here? That is just such a confusing idea to, to me. So he of course has really nothing to gain except just blood working for Voldemort, which had all he's after, which kind of works out.

So why, but why did he want that? And I think. This, this question is not so easily answered just by like one sentence. I think we have to definitely consider all the factors here, but I think the main thing that contributed to Fender's almost like transformation from person to werewolf. Just full-time werewolf was how kind of cynical he was and how he enjoyed killing people, which is kind of a requirement to be on Voldemort side, because then you just have to kill someone without even thinking.

And although people like Draco might not enjoy it, he's kind of forced into it. That's kind of the odd one out, but people like Bellatrix people like Dala, HOV and Avery, and would all those pieces. Are really into killing people, which is unfortunate because then we have a bunch of bloodthirsty maniacs on Voldemort side, which is very unfortunate.

Now that I, I would say there are blood bloodthirsty. Where's, February's literally blood thirsty. Now this is kind of a vivid kind of version of this saying, and it is a very unfortunate thing for us, for, for the people on Voldemort side, because, or. Um, Dumbledore side. So really where does this all go and why is this all happening and why Lupin?

I think that that is another thing that I am just still, still trying to figure out. I think this is a question that really doesn't have an answer Fenrir is just so, so deeply into his. Into his, his job. It was duty that he forgets that she has to kind of leave room for everyone else. And he, uh, he, he, he can't just take over the, the side of destruction for Voldemort.

You know, he, he can't be ju the, the sole demolition is manager because there has to be multiple of those. He is a very, a very, very, I would say at least for her, for Harry and all the people in other good side. He's a scary person because he's a human werewolf less than, what's not scary about that. And he is just kinda, he, he just takes over.

He just takes over and lavender brown is another thing that I thought was, was a bit confusing here because in the battle of Hogwarts, he kind of. T up really attacks lavender brown. And it's not laughter that I'm really thinking about here. It's what happened to her. And then another layer to this mystery is, was Fenrir like he was, was he basically a human werewolf when he attacked?

Or was it just a full werewolf? We don't know. So he fender attacked lavender, and then we never know what I was laughing at her. She alive. Is she dead? Is your werewolf, is she a, a zombie witch who turned into a giant troll then died as a tree and fall off a cliff? I have no idea what just adds to this mystery.

There's no, anything that we can examine. There's no history. There's no nothing. We don't know. We don't know anything. And we'd, we'd like, it's just such a confusing and because Voldemort let somewhere wizard, robes, and then we were, can use a wand. Okay. He went to Hogwarts. So is he a werewolf then? Uh, I don't know, but then did he want to become werewolf?

Did he choose to get bitten? Did the, did he, okay, this is. This is one of those like chicken or the egg snares where we just have no idea. I am sure there's a summer. You can look up. I'm sure I'm just floundering here, but I am just not, not with this story here. I, I can, uh, I can follow this and still fully understanding what's going on.

So that is really what makes a fantastic backstory one that is confusing and it's a lot of twists and turns has. Traumatic killing of the parents and just stuff like that. So naturally what I want to end this talking about, because I feel like we'd go on forever. Uh, so let's move on and to close out this episode, I just want to go over one of the things that is one of the most contributing to their personalities, and that is they're all.

And the McGee enema G and the Marcus's, this pronunciation is going to be the death of me. I'm going to call them each an animal. Gus, I don't know if that's the correct term, if you disagree, I'm sorry, but an entomologist is someone who turns from a human to an animal and back again. And a lot of people confuse this with a malpractice.

A malpractice is someone who is, who can turn into a, a person in an animal that a person. But eventually they will be stuck in their animal form. And Neguin, he actually isn't is a malpractice. We learn about her in fantastic beasts. She's a person and turned into a snake later on, but in the homologous is someone who learns to do this.

And it's very difficult to obviously who, who learns and then it can transform back and forth. There are only seven are registered entomology and. G yes. In the last century, according to her mind, uh, including professor McGonigal, and obviously there are at least five or at least four unregistered. And among that we know of obviously including serious Jason.

Uh, Peter and Rita Skeeter. So there is a definitely a huge disconnect between the amount of registered and Dimagi and the amount of actual energy. So there's a huge, not really, you know, it doesn't translate very well, but the fact still stands that James Sirius and Peter are all can all turn into an animal.

They also include loopiness and that's why they decided to learn how to turn into an animal so they could join Lubin on his, on his, since transformations. And he said that if he came one of his favorite days, because he, he attacks humans on animals. And when they turn an animal, they just run around, they play they, and, uh, they, um, Sirius and James were large enough that they could keep a loop in and check if anything really happened.

So they were definitely great weekday with each other. So the question I'm trying to answer here, Those are the fact that they are all animal ag contribute to the fact that they are who they are. What I mean by this is would they be so brash? Would they be so confident? Would they still have ended up in the same way if they were not.

The people who could turn to animals. Obviously no one knew them as that, but if anything, that only grew their confidence because they're, they're going around how they, they have this secret and they can, you know, do something to everyone. They can, they can prove them all wrong. You know, they can do something amazing if anything that was very unhealthy for them, because then they developed this sense of like, oh, Better than you.

Cause I can do this because I can, I can transform. And so, so what, what did that do for them? Did that help them, did that give them a, an extra sense of security or did that just prove, uh, that they were better than I went else and then they just grew on me, you know, kind of, uh, more and more competent. I think it was kind of a combination because they were good people.

The, uh, the, the marauders are good people. They understand people understand humans. They, they can move around life. They are kind to some degree and they, they just don't. So I think they wouldn't automatically be like, okay, so we're just better than them, you know, that's not, that's not the solution they would come to when they would complete their transformation.

That's absolutely not what I think would happen, but I think they wouldn't be 100%, you know, I can do this, but I think I'm gonna have to keep it on the down though. I think they, they are definitely. Confident. And they are definitely happy that they managed to achieve this grade feed. But the question is here really?

How much did it affect them? Well, it affected them so like a little bit, but enough to show up because that is a big part of who. I think this is kind of contained back to the first question. And I think it definitely does contribute to who they are. They're they're turning to animals was really what they were looking forward to every month.

And that's how they met and went around. And even later in life, their, their skills as an entomologists definitely helped them. Peter could live with. 13 years and serious could escape. Uh, he could walk out in public as one of the most wanted criminals on earth as a dog. And obviously James didn't use his power for obvious reasons and Lubin DOD didn't have a choice.

So even if it wasn't this, you know, great thing to begin with, even though it kind of was to them, it definitely turned into a very important part of not only who they were, but how they manage to get around. Now, if that is a bad thing, then I think it will definitely manifest into a more serious problem.

Uh, kind of, kind of what I mean by that is, um, they, if, if it hasn't gone to their head already, I think it, it won't because they're so far along and it's just, this, it's not a novelty anymore that they are. Kind of in this different stage of just, you know, whatever it's done, let's do it, you know, move on from life.

So I think that's, that's kind of always these questions answered. And when one big, one big explanation. Yes, they are very confident that they managed to get it done. It might improve their own image a little bit, but that's not enough to make them. Completely different person, but they still have sight of who they are and they still use their ability to make a difference in the world and help them escape from bad people.

So that's pretty much it. Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoyed this episode. I certainly did, especially because it was the episode that I managed to kick off this, this, this, this, this new segment of actually writing stuff. So thank you for listening to this. Um, thank you, Toby around me development.

Uh, again, the quilt ink coming out this Wednesday, that link will be in the show notes at the pod discussion and Instagram and tick dock. And Hey Al, how about this? I've never said this in a while, but. Why don't you leave a review for the show? I've never said that in a very long time, but a five stars out last week.

That's a lie. I said last week, five stars. Their view. If, if you, uh, if you'd be willing to do so, if this is a five-star show, but if it isn't, Liva four or three-star show a review and tell me really why, why you think that, how I can bring it up to a five star and then if you cannot me, it continue. So thanks for listening.

And as always remember that happiness candy fan, even in the darkest of times, if one remembers to turn on the light. I'll see you later.

This was The Potter Discussion.
