Episode description

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back for another TV retrospective. Joining them is Digital Trends Editor Allison Lips as they talk about Match Game ‘73.

Match Game ‘73 (retitled for every new year) is the first revival of the 1960s game show The Match Game. The show premiered on CBS in 1973. Though CBS canceled the show in 1979, a new syndicated version premiered later the same year and ran until 1982.

On the show, contestants attempt to match a panel of celebrities’ answers to humorous questions. Regular panelists include Richard Dawson, Charles Nelson Reilly, and most notably Betty White, who appeared on the old Match Game. Original host Gene Rayburn also returned.

Match Game has seen more revivals since the 1970s, the last of which was hosted by Alec Baldwin and ended in 2021.

Aaron, Josh, and Allison briefly look at the ‘60s version before going into ‘70s iteration and its unique humor. They also discuss game shows in today’s TV landscape.

For another podcast with Allison, you can listen to them chat about Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Match Game ‘73 is streaming on Hulu.
