Man I had had a long camp season, you know, working all the weekends on the summer. You know, so me and the wife needed to go on a much needed vacation. Look like y'all had a good time and we had we had a blast. We had a blast some time away from them from the Little one. Now we're back, now back, good to be back on players, Thank you real quick. The reality hit when you got back, and the little one was like, what's up mama? Dad?

Listen listen. Reality hit when I hopped on the plane and I knew I was going back, but she has been getting better sleep wise, that's good one. And I woke up at eight. I'm finding myself lacking at the individual show right now that maybe I'm too close to it because cover the team, we know what's going on. I just see storylines and I can I get this storyliney i e. The two linebackers

Jaylen Smith and Laton Banderash. Okay Banderash. The team told him we're not picking up your option. How does he feel about that? I mean he can sit around here tell me the media guy, but talk to the hard knocks cameras. Jaylen Smith, here's a guy that is getting beat up on the regular, who has an inspiring story, who was once a fan favorite that now people are like, man, we don't like this. Can we hear from Jalen juicy storyline? Here's the guy with a whole bunch of brands and things.

What's Jaylen gonna do after life? I mean, this is an opportunity. I'm not seeing that. Can we can we what about what about my my man Leo Collins? He missed the whole season. Can we figure out how that was for him? How he's looking looking forward to coming back this year? Is the fact. But can we get any of that? This is about the rest of the d Bees. We our defense was horrible last year's new we said we had a horrible defense. We got new safety,

new leader in the locker room. Can we hear from him? We got a new we got we got new to the team, he was with dan Quinn. Can we can we hear about the change, like any of that? Can we get that? Can we get a dan Quinn story? Q Quinn? This how Quinn do? I'm like, oh, yeah, I think he's a good guy. You know, I'm I'm I'm I'm rooting for the guy defense has been playing a lot better. Can we see what he's what he thinks he's bringing to the table, what the changes that

he's made. Can we see any of that? We haven't seen any of it, or even just the career path. You're a head coach who went to a Super Bowl, who is what maybe twelve minutes away from winning the thing, and now you're an assistant coach trying to be a head coach? What what's what is the path? What is you know? I'd like to know that about dan Quinn.

I don't. I don't know anything about the head coach really, other than a little bit that they showed his parents and can't Ohio and talked about him, you know, growing up in Pittsburgh. But I talked to Rich Downing Pull and Rich is like, hey man, he grew up in a bar, you know, in Pittsburgh and you know tough guys. So you know, I know, I get to know more about McCarthy and my conversations with Rich than with all those cameras with Hard Knocks. That's true. Can you open

this thing up? And you were saying before, how many times do we watched Hard Knocks? And you get to know more about these guys and you get to know about their families. I mean John Grewden, you know the opening we saw that with John Grewd. You saw a whole bunch of Rex Ryan when he was with the Jets, and Bruce Ayns. I just don't know. Now, maybe Mike

McCarthy doesn't want that. Maybe he said, man, I know, you guys find stories other places, but I just feel like I'm watching Hard Knocks and I don't feel like I know the head coach very much. That's true. Yeah, I will say this about about the Hard Knocks, And we talked about this last time. He wanted to get on it. They showed a little bit more of the guys at the bottom of the roster, the guys that are fighting and scratching, and Clone we got a chance

to see. I don't want to kill his name we're sixty. Don't want to kill his last name, Alco. We saw his you know, his bat on, how his family, um, you know, Mexican, Mexican guys coming over here and and providing a better life. I mean it was there were some things that were awesome with it. You know that drone footage coming in at the beginning. I was gonna say that it was a little awkward. That was you

didn't like that, you loved it. I loved it, But it got like really quiet for a long time, and I was like, somebody say, where is it gonna stop? It was a good shot, yeah, but he like stopped talking like like a thirty second into the drone. So to me, that's why I like the drone footage, just like this is pretty cool, especially so people don't know it, but you and I we know when they went into the practice field and you wanted to the weight room, I hadn't seen that much of the weight room. I've seen it from I see it walking by, but you know, they don't let us, so we're in there. You guys have been the I was interested to go in the

weight room with it. Would I'd rather see the stuff that we just talked about that we wanted to see it the drone shot because at this point, I'm like, like we even want the show went off last night.

I was like they got to have another clip like of something to show us, right, they got to have another something like I'm like free every time I see some time like that where it's like, I'm like, I would rather see you talk to you, see Mark Cooper, Jaylen Smith for a late Vander I would I would rather see that than this, right, So that's that's just mine, right. So every week I go into it is like I'm hoping to see more of what we talk about the

guys at the end of the roster. Maybe go see the coach's home, maybe go see you know X y Z. And then when I don't, I'm just like bro, I could do without it. I will say it is though, how much sauce does Jerry Jones had. I mean circle, he ain't comeing in on a helicopter. Pilot circled this building real quick. And you see this, Stephen, Yeah, it looks even better now, and then when we first heard that it did twelve years ago. I mean, looks good. I'm rich talk about the American dream. I wish they

It's hard not to take They could have went down to Florida over there on Biscayne Bay and saw the yacht Mickey Harrison they got from the Super Bowl last I mean, they could have went on the France and got that thing. It was in Alaska last year, so yeah, I mean they could have could have went and broke it off and so um or maybe they just took the family trip was in Alaska, but they'd take the yacht. But the anyway,

the yachts, the yat is around as well. I mean, I'm gonna lie. I sat there, I was like, it's good to be him, bro, It's good. It's good to be a boy. I like the shot. Remember we came down to the elevator and it was that stunt shot, like the camera wasn't middle middle, he wats through the cowboy. It was like, I like that got brothers. It was no way it was getting there. But the church has got him. Like I said, I'm gonna go back to I remember last year he was saying, Man, this is gonna be the dude. The new tie is going to be the guy to carry us to the playoffs,

of his athletic ability. They hyped it. Now, they had you calling him the red pistol, calling us and the doctor m pistol because you was so confident that the new is gonna be the guy and think, man, hey, things changed very quickly, Church, very quickly, they changed very Will he be here next week to throw? To do? What to throw it again? He done? He's done on Monday. He's done. He done because they need him. And then he's done on Monday. You know how to go practice?

I tell you Joe Witt had them boys. Listen, I'm just listen. Dan Quinn had Joe was calling. Joe Witt was calling the calling the game. Those are dan Quinn's plays, and dan Quinn has turned this defense around. What was the what were the third down stats? Now, let me

let me, let me let me step in here. Yeah, I said here to me, this is the positive of what leadership is about. Dan Quinn has to lead the stadium because of COVID. All right, Joe, you your defense, you call it and they're still getting it done. That is leadership. And also when we talked about and I said, man, if you going, you bring dan Quinn here, let him bring his people. That's true. He knew what to do, knew what the cup boom, and there was no fall off.

And so that that right, there is a positive leadership trait that when you leave, they can still run things and everything is all right. I look, I go back to Bill Walsh, and Bill Walsh left the forty nineties everytime they want to Super Bowl next year, And to George Seyffer, they were able to keep it rolling and keep it going because they had a system in place about what it is they wanted to do and everyone had bought in and knew what, knew where to go.

And to me, that's what an outstanding job about Joe. And look, okay, let's just let's just say you're right, Danny McCrae that this defense is a top ten defense. If this is a top ten defense and the Cowboys find themselves in the playoffs, dan Quinn is going to get a whole lot of accolades and credit that that's how it goes, which means he could most likely get a job because we will probably see five jobs open. It happens every years. Good five jobs are gonna open up.

So maybe Dan Quinn re enters um the NFL as a head coach. If he goes, you would love to have Joe be the guy to feel if you're the right him, and that unless Dan takes him. But you know what, here's if it's one thing we know, if Jerry could convince Callen don't go and write a Jerry write a chet Oh yeah, I mean we all know people here in the building where Jerry has told him come back to me. Don't don't let money be don't

So if if Dan Quinn becomes a head coach and he wants to take Joe, Joe, Joe to be his DC jerk and right chet real quick and just say hey man, we need you here, we need you here, and he'll stay. And if you're Joe, what do you know about the Cowboys. You're going to get publicity. You're going to be on NBC Sunday and it TV three times. That's the maximum. You're gonna be

on Monday Night Football. You're going to be on Thursday Night Football. You're going to be on a Thanksgiving game, you're gonna so the opportunity for you to shop your wares is going to be out there. You're gonna have a minimum of at least five nationally televised game, no matter what the record was beforehand. I mean, like we remember when I went to Jacksonville, we went to an ANC championship. The next year we had zero national zero Cowboys don't even make the playoffs. They came back six

national televised games. So you're always going to have that opportunity as an assistant coach, especially as a DC. If if if, like if we were saying what happened, like Dan Quinn moves on, Joe Joe Witt moves up to the day, you're gonna have those opportunities to go to the next level. What are your thoughts on rotating the linebackers as much as we've seen now, we don't know if the regular

season that's gonna happen or not. Maybe they're just showing different packages and all that stuff, but it's been a couple of games now that we've seen that. What are your thoughts on those on the linebackers rotating like that? Yeah, I don't I don't think that's gonna continue. Um, you know, unfortunately for the two guys that were here previously, I think that forty twenty eleven are going to get a lot of playing time and they will get the majority

of the snaps. Uh. Sometimes you will have those times when the offense comes out in like twenty two personnel or something that you gotta get some some size and they're the bigger linebackers. But I think you're going to see forty twenty eleven. I think we kind of talked about this last week before I left, like would you see him coming down as the strong safety, But now he's playing the linebacker, So I think I think that's

the way to go. I think you're gonna see a lot of teams that are gonna come out on eleven personnel and they're gonna they're gonna try to run it if you go light, or they're gonna try to run those tight ends over the middle to see if you've got some linebackers that can cover it. And then so far we've seen these two be able to play the run effectively and they can get to their spots in the past, break and make those tackles once they see

the quarterbackers throw the ball. Let's all right, let's say it's week one, it's weak one, and we see that Keyan O'Neil. We already know Parsons can play the run heavy. He's a dog in that linebacker position. We know that. Let's just say Week one comes around. Keyan O'Neil is playing the run pretty well. You know, he's shedding blockers, he's hitting guys at the point of attack. They're not

getting any leaky yard as anything like that. Do you go ahead and say, you know what, these are two linebackers, no matter what the package is based Nickel, no matter what it is, these are two linebackers. And do you relegate Jalen Smith and Lve as backup players and maybe situationals here and there if he's if he's playing well, I'm seeing forty two and eleven, And then you got

to figure out nine and fifty five. You gotta figure out who's gonna be playing in those heavy down situations, fourth and one, whatever it is out of Layton Vanderesh and Jaylen Smith. But forty two and eleven are looking good. And the thing that we talked about last year is we know that Jaylen Smith and pass coverage, we were all worried about liability, Vanderish and pass coverage not too much better. And now you got some guys who can go out there and play that position and play play

the pass and play the run. Why mess with it? This is true. I messed with it. And look, I mean, I think we can all come here and we can all agree at least on this. Parsons is the best linebacker we got. Am I wrong in my right and saying that Parsons is the best. He needs to be on the field every single he needs to be at every down. Linebacker forth this team. Now the other guys are they gonna have to work themselves out and right now, knew we I don't know how you feel about this,

but I think Keano Neils are best linebacker. Um. You know, he's coming from that transitioning from safety, which I thought might be a little harder than it is because at safety, you know, even in you're in the box, you're still a little bit further back and you've got space an opportunity to make those line and miss. But he's in the box box with those linebackers and he's doing a great job but shedding blocks, getting to the ball, making at the point of attack, he's he's hitting well. So

you know, I don't think I'm wrong. It's saying, you know, Parson's is our number one key, I don't Nils our number two. And then we got the other guys, you know, deciding the way out. What you think about that? Knowing, I keep going back into this Tampa game and I feel like as they're starting, when I see the Nickel defense go out there for the first game, I say to myself, you know, yeah, this is what they're trying

to do. You gotta get ready to face Tampa back and you're gonna face a lot of You start to look at the schedus on the teams you're playing here, you're gonna be a nickel a lot and Ronald Jones, Giovanni Bannard, these guys coming out of the backfield. You got Rob Gronkowski, you got oj Howard, you got you got guys who're gonna have to cover as linebackers out here. So these two guys right now, this is where they're

gonna go with. I'm more than comfortable and I'm also more than comfortable with fifty five and nine being backup players. And I can't say this enough. They got eleven game stretch, eleven straight football games in a row, seventeen game schedule. You're gonna need all the guys. You're gonna need it. You're gonna need all the guys. So Parsons, he hasn't played over a year. We don't know how. I mean, he's looking great in preseason, but we don't know how that.

You know, Endorance is gonna be throughout that long stretch of games, and like you mentioned after the after the bat week, it's eleven straight games, you're gonna need a Jabrol Cox. You're gonna need all so so its fans And I said this the other day when you're out, fans keep beating up Jaylen Smith, like cut this guy, and this is wrong. And you got certain medium members around here who are out here, you know with this

this vendetta against Jaylen Smith. And I just simply say, you're not looking at the bigger picture, which is you in a seventeen game season, nobody and you guys play. Ain't nobody gonna walk out of here healthy. They're all gonna get nicked up. And you start looking at the quarterbacks that you have to play in, some of the running backs and tight ends. This is a tough schedule. I mean, while people can talk about strength of schedule, start looking at who who some of these players are

that you're going up against. Man, I mean, first two games between Tampa Bay and the Charges. I mean, there's some offensive talent right out of the gate, you know, just just that you're gonna have to contend with. So your linebackers are going to be very important. And I just think people gotta just just understand what's happened to Jalen Smith is not Jalen's fault in terms of he didn't pay himself. The Jones family paid him. Who's supposed

to do not take the bag. Now you're mad because you're like, hey, man, this guy's making all this money. He's not this and this, Okay, he the first dude the Cowboys have given a lot of money to. Who ain't that guy you thought he was? This is very true. Tyrone Crawford. Tyrone Crawford was a dude who the last two years, Tyrone Crawford was nothing like the player they thought they had signed. He was injured, but but you know, and he just didn't play up to the level when

he was out there. It happens across the National Football League. This is true. I'm trying to understand why people so mad at Jalen Smith. But yeah, you look at Layton Vanners, the first round pick who Rob Marionelli had thrown out the whole Brian Urlacker thing too, and look at this guy. They't said, man, we ain't gonna give you a fifth We ain't give you a being picked up the fifth year. So if you think about both guys or not what

you thought they were gonna be two years ago. Two years ago you thought, man, we got two dudes, we got two guys. Well you don't cornerstones. But this is how fast sports changes. Sports will change on you that fast. Oh all right, and it can go either way. Hey man, you got we're all basketball fans who thought Mike button Holzer was gonna sit up here and coached his team to an NBA champion. I'm thinking he's fired when YA

said I'm gonna stay here to win. When I said you you're gonna beat the for a long time, everybody to be frustrated. But that's but but sports team and then what do we see today? Dude got three year contracts SENSI yeah, And I'm like, is he really that good? Or is yannest? And he just didn't getting away? Let me tell you something. But but that's but that's what happens. And that's what happens. You know with Jay in Layton Vanders.

These your kis man who ended up making the Pro Bowl and you thought, hey man, that guy and that's all right, that's okay, you know, that's okay. But they can still have a role here. That fits. I would have been calling listen, I would have hired some lawyer, great defense team, great whatever team, and I'll be getting in touch with Mike Nolan and we would have to figure out how much money he owes me for messing

up the projection the progressions of my career. Okay, because you're right, these guys were on the up and up. They were on the up and up. They were in a four three defense. They were going sideline the sideline, and that was the time when we thought that we had two of the best linebackers in the league. And then somehow we get a new guy in here, and then they looked like two of the worst linebackers in

the league. But with with with Quinn that I'm blaming Mike Nolan for the entire these guys looked totally different. They talked about this last year Mike Nolan came in and all of these guys were on the up and up. Right, We was like, George Lewis is gonna be whatever, Like we were talking about these guys like that, and then Nolan came in and we talked about these guys one

eighty all of them, every single one of them. And now Dan quint here, and we're talking about beside Jaylen LVI, but we're not even mentioning these guys as being bad players and not being able to do this and pis and whatever. We're talking about them really being on the up and up again. Now, of course, you have a first round who came in and made all this noise to get h to get one of those line pass up.

And then you have a linebacker the game, uh with Dan Quinn, right, So, so timing and and some stuff just didn't work out for Jalen and Vanderush. But yeah, a lot of this is on Mike Nolan. We see it. We saw before, We see the middle when Mike Nolan was here, and now we are seeing what is happening after giving Mike Nolan a chunk of the blame. But I'm not giving him all the blame. No, no, no, no,

I'm giving him No. I'm Mike McCarthy hired him. Okay, okay, players, Mike McCarthy sat up here the whole offseason you're getting when he had the Peter King from NBC Sports and Tom Placer from NFL Network, and they gave me these great pr time. Yeah, man, I've been got a got a whole barn, and we're all we got all this stuff. I mean like doctor dre in the lab, but the coaching lab abody to come up. He abody to come up with in two thousand and one. I mean, you

forgot about Mike. You know who you and you present us with Mike Nolan. And and this is a frustrating part. Joe Joe Wit was the guy he would consider for the DC JIB Imagine how different and we just saw what he called over the week. Imagine how different the defense is here. You have somebody who's competency running the team. So y're not gonna put nothing on the players. Oh I put a little bit on there. Coaching matters. Coaching doesn't matter, I I but we can't the whole defense

can't be system gays. I mean, like like Bro he got sometimes you gotta make the system and we had nobody out there. Mike Nolan got a lot of a lot of careers ruined. Okay, guys from that that came here and got released because they weren't playing a certain way. My man Wardley, he didn't look like he know how to play football at all. But that's something he should

know that's covered through. You should. But when you but when you got guys that we know, I won't say names who come to us and say them goods, didn't know what they were talking about. I'm sitting here arguing with these dudes because they don't have any idea what's going on. Then you know that the locker room is bad because the people that we know don't have these

type of issues. And I can see if it was a bunch of rookies going out there and the coaching was there, but there was a lot of events out there who played in multiple systems and they were still looking bad. Okay, but but that's the thing though, they can't figure it out in this one system. But it can't. We've seen some of these same players look better. That's and being better. Your job as a coach is to understand the warts of your football team and cover them up.

That's your job. You can't overcome back coaching. If you haven't seen the Nick Saban Bill Belichick Um documentary on HBO, watch it. It's so good. And Mike Nolan. Okay, when Mike Nolan makes moves and I'm sitting I ain't getting paid. I'm no professional I didn't play in the league like you. But I'm saying, wait a minute, vanderash have neck issue and you're gonna put him in middle linebacker where you're gonna run up here and crashing again? Late? What we

were doing late? How did late make the Pro Bowls? Out here in the outside being will and I'm gonna put Jalen in courage? Did anybody not watch that Thursday night Bears game when Mitchell Trubisky was like where's he at? And they kept going at him. I don't want him in coverage. That's not putting him in his best position. So if I'm just fatass media guy watching it that I ain't played and this is what you do. They're paying you a lot of money and this is what

you do all day long. And I'm sitting here figuring out, like, yeah, that ain't the move. Well, I wanna say this. We woke up a lot of these defensive players. In my mind is the draft and they put them guys on notice book, your job is on noted. We got good. The eight of the eleven draft picks were all defensive players. Were bringing in all these guys on the defensive side of all the free agency so I'll say I think it was a combination. Quinn obviously got these guys flying around.

Kudos to Craig, he knew what he was talking about. But also these guys, a lot of these people's jobs is on the line, and you'll see contract just like in contract years, guys will step up out of nowhere. Where was this at when we signed you three years ago? Now his contract year, you're going four thousand yards and all this other Let me tell you something, think a

lot of that welcome up. Jerry came and put them little notice during the season last year, all right, when he started letting he say, man, it's gonna be some changes or whatever. I think they who they let gonna poll they loved they started letting go of guys, and guys were on notice and they weren't playing this way.

But I will say this though, as we talk about Kean O'Neill and we talk about Parsons and how they're making places in the run and all that, I think that is also a testament to the D line doing their jobs right. Because if these guys are only having to share one block and they're not fighting off old lineman the whole time and they're able to free and get those tackles one and two yards for two yards one of two yard games. That means the d line

is doing something right. They're doing something right, and they gotta continue stepping it up. I mean, guys like Bret Urban Bohannah, you know oc I don't want to kill his last name. They're they're stepping up a little bit because that that absence of Neville Gallum war for at least the first couple of games, that's gonna be huge. It's gonna be huge. And what do we see last year with this defense. Nobody really killed us on the edges. You know, nobody really killed us with the Marcus Lawrence.

And you know, if we had all the smith out there and Randy Gregory towards the end, nobody really killed us on the edges. It was up the gut. It was up the gut, up the middle. And that's what we're gonna have to see. Can we make these adjustments. Can't we get guys in there that can help that defense out? All right, we need time out. Okay, I've gotta pay another bill here. We need to get into the backup quarterback situation here, because we've already seen a change.

You showed us you could do it in the preseason, and then you move on, and then you move on into the regular done it in the regular season. Gilbert has done it in the regular season. Place him to go out there and mess up. But if he does, we definitely need to go look for a quarterback from it. But

if he doesn't, Cooper Rush is the answer. If you go out there and he have a one or two passer rating, then against against If he go out he only can do what it. Listen, he's starting. He can only do what he says. That's what I'm saying. So so if he does, I if let's just say he does good used to answer that back up, We don't need to go this is what this is what I anticipate happening. Okay, the nude she's cut. You're keeping two guys. You're gonna keep Dak. You'll keep one of these two

because they know the offense, so so you'll keep. At this point in time, I keep Rush, who's been das backup quarterback before. And then you start to look out here. Okay, is there's somebody else out here that gets to let go that I think can be an improvement on. That would be if I was a general manager, that be my strategy here. Um, who's out there? We can't mention any names because we don't want to get in ball tampering. But at the same time, there's some dudes and I'm thinking, okay,

I would look at this player. But right now, Cowboys, when they cut it to fifty three, they'll be two dudes. It's gonna be Rush and that and how we're saying rush, but how we're saying it's gonna be Rush and Dak Dak rush. I see that. Man. I'm gonna let y'all know right now. Anyway, Okay, quarterback Aaron County, now four one. We've seen Cooper Rush do this before twenty seventeen. We've seen how he made it seen he was a darling in preseason. He's a darling right now in the preseason.

Jacksonville is coming around the corner. I don't expect Cooper Rush to have that efficient of a game. I think we're gonna see the real Cooper Rush. All right, it's really listen, Oh this is really really important, right I get it. Back on quarterback is really important. Truth of the matter is if that back of quarterback is playing a lot, you maybe accounting this season to be like it was last year. All right, and it don't it matters what the top ten defense, Yes, still what the

top defense? You look, I mean, your question what if what if it's just a three game stretch that you lose your quarterback? Four? Can can Cooper Rush figure out a way to help the Cowboys win two or three football games? And it is true? But but that's but that those are the things you're at that that's what I'm asked, which means he and now look at this one time. Would I trust him or Garrett Gilbert to

be the guy who win three games? No, which is why said the backup quarterback you need is down on this sea. I was getting ready to say, we think Russian godhead and win NFL. But but you think that Gary Gibber can carry us through. I think he'd win a game. You think because you see them win? What I think? Did he win the Pittsburgh game? Did he win the Pittsburgh game? So Dan Quinn in COVID protocol along with wide receiver CD Lamb, defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, safety Mali Cooker, and safety Israel muk oamo um. Are they all positive tests or just like close contacts are this is you know when hippo um you can't say what anyone's condition is.

You can just merely just they was able to say zeke just positive back into you know this is out of HIPPA violation.
