To the players Lounge. All right, it's Friday, so that means it is the Players Lounge right here on Dallas Cowboys dot Com Radio, I'm new Restructs joined by former Dallas Cowboys players Danny McCrae and Barry Church. Fellas. We have a lot to discuss in this album. First off, let me check in on everybody as there at home. How you guys doing. I'm doing good man, Just you know, hoping my boy d Matt got his an Internet right? But why why he hated? That's all I'm doing here, man,
Everybody hating me? I don't understand why. You know, if you if you subtract the hate from the outside of people in the life out here, the house is doing amazing. Okay, all right, let us start with Olden Smith. The Cowboys signed the former Pro Bowl defensive lineman linebacker. He started with San Francisco forty nine ers, seventh overall pick in twenty eleven, ended up having some substance issues, got cut by the Niners side by the Raiders. Raiders ended up
dropping him and Jay Glazer broke the report. Jay Glazier Fox fourth. The Olden Smith signs of one year deal four million dollars with a lot of incentive side to it, and that Jim Tomsula's former coach with the forty nine ers is now with the Cowboys' d line coach and Mike McCarthy somehow connected with Alden Smith and he feels good about it. So Alden Smith the Dallas Cowboy. Yeah, I'm I'm man. This was confusing to me. Man. I mean, we got a guy who who hasn't played football in
four years. I mean, he was he was a you know, all pro player. His first two years coming out, he played extremely high level. I think he had like thirty three and a half sacks for his first two years. But after that, I mean he was on a decline. I mean when he went to Oakland, he had a couple of sacks here and there, but he was never the player that he was as his first two years in San Francisco, and then he took a four year He's got kicked out of the league for four years.
I mean, the guy had substance abuse, he had legal troubles, and then I guess he's supposed to work all this magic and he's back to normal now. And I'm all about second chances, But I mean, four years out of the league and you think he's gonna come in and produce a pass rush. I mean, we need to we need to improve our rush. We really had, like, you know, a couple of sacks here and there last year. But I just don't think this is the guy to do it. I would have rather put my money on Randy Gregory.
But I mean, we'll see what happens. Maybe I'm wrong, Yeah, Church, you know you just you you mentioned second chances, all right, So I'm gonna just I'm looking at this timeline of Alden Smith and it's twenty twelve suspicion to be U twenty twelves, get stabbed twice, twenty thirteen, single car accident, twenty thirteen, three family charges of possession of assault or assault weapon, and it just keeps on going on, and I'm like, well, what are we doing? So it's not
only a decline this man. It was in Oakland while and I cannot imagine imagine what I happened in Dallas. We already tried this with the Greg Hardy experiment. And then so now we got Aldon Smith coming in here, and you know, if they say changed, I guess, I guess everybody deserves like a sixth chances. So let's get another church. You mentioned it. Why don't they bring you back for four meal? That's just bring me. If you're gonna bring somebody back from for me, I'm coming out.
I've been only I've been only out of football for two years. If ye, if y'all give it up four meal, let me slide back in there. Jeesus, I'm gonna play Devil's advocate here. Okay, I'm just gonna Playvil's advocate here we go. I will base it off the one interview that I did have with Aldon Smith. Okay, it was. It was the Super Bowl up in New York, Broncos the Seahawks, and Alden Smith came by and sat down
in our NBC Sports radio booth. I got to talk to him a little bit before we went on Mike and then and then on Mike and did this a little bit out afterward, and he was a you know, he had his issues at the time, but he wasn't a bad dude. Now, I like to consider myself a pretty decent judge of character. He wasn't a bad guy. And you guys know, there's guys who who do a lot of things that are questionable, that are bad people, and you're like, now, you were a bad dude. This guy,
I thought he was lost as a young guy. He was lost and apparently and I'm just going by what Jay Glazer said, who's worked him out and he's been and he's been in Jay Glazer's program out there that he has come back and he's ready to play. Now what he contributes, Lord, I don't know. Okay, four years out of football, that's a long time. He's thirty years
old as a young man's game. But if he has fixed himself mentally, and Jerry wants to take the chance, this is what this is last chance you and you know, Barry, you could see Jerry. You could see Jerry employ Brandy Gregory and Alden Smith this year. Both. Let me tell you something that's that's not just This is so much different to me though, because I think that all the Smith he was able to get better how he is now,
probably because he was away from the game. The game is probably what brought him all that, all the headaches and and crazy thoughts that he had going on to do all this, he got just alcohol, knives, guns and car accidents that's That's that sums it up for me. I just I'm not sure. But the newly Devil's advocate, give all the smith a chance, We'll see how it works. I just don't know. I just don't know how he
can create a pass rush out there. I mean, they're gonna pay him uch defensive and I assume, and it's just there's a difference between shape and football shape. Like you know what I'm saying. I could see if he was out there, you know, you know, playing in something some type of you know, XFL or something, but he hasn't played actual football in four years. And in those four years. We're not saying he just went automatically straight
to the program from leaving football. I'm assuming he, you know, was going through legal Trumble's going through all this for a couple of years, So I'm assuming he didn't start getting back in football shape for the past maybe a year, maybe two years. And I just don't think it'll add up for the Cowboys. But like I said it before, maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see them get getting a lot of generation out of or generating product out of him. He might be able to do something.
I mean He's only getting based two millions dollars, so I ain't gonna cost him a lot. Okay, and keep in mind too, I mean this thing is heavily incentibout, so if they want to go ahead and run him, they can. So basically this is a free It's basically a free look for you. Give you the cowboys to stay on Aldon Smith, you're on the players leaves, and I want to get this aspect with you guys. Who in the locker room is the person to work with
and Aldon Smith to work with the Randy Gregory. I mean, obviously these guys have to take care of themselves, but is there anybody in the room you guys have been in that room who talks with guys, who are the leaders that helps work with guys who had all field issues for me? I mean they're not oh, go ahead, go ahead, Danny. Oh no. Yeah. I had no answer for that one because I didn't play with a lot of these guys. I know, we had doctor Jackie, and we had some outside people that would come in and
make sure that our heads are on straight. But as far as the locker room, Church is probably more familiar with these guys than I am, I would have to say from the locker room I'm seeing now, I'm assuming there's I don't know if there's anybody that can really talk to him. I would say d Law and those guys they're still they're still relatively young, they're still in their prime. They're still trying to get themselves up to
that upper echelon. When I was playing, I mean, there was guys like you know, the Marcus ware, the Jason Hatcher's, the Spears of the world who were veteran, veteran guys and who can get those guys going along good and get them in the right program. But here, I mean, you got the hot boys, and they're all relatively young. They're all relatively young to this NFL, so I can't really see them out there putting them under their wings saying, hey,
we gotta do this, so we gotta do that. Plus they're younger than him, so I mean that's something I can't really see happening. But hopefully he's able to get that mentorship and get on the right path and help his Cowboys team out. Okay, so basically it's got to be d line coach Jim Tom Sueler. It's gotta be. I mean, that's who I assume put you know, put it, put the put him on his back and said hey, bring him here with us. So I assume he's gonna have to chop to him and make sure that he's
going on the right path. Yeah, player development, player personnel. They have to keep a good eye on him, just to make sure that he didn't get caught up in the lights here and in the long Star state. All right, So right here on the players Loud, it's basically a thumbs down for Dandy McCrae and Burry Church with the Aldon smith Son. Yeah, yeah, I'm thumb found with it. All right. Now here's here's what I found interesting and looking at a picture that is causing issues out there
on on social media. Des Bryan Ezekiel, Elliott, Dak Prescott. So it's a group of five they all got together, took one photo. Okay, so they took one photo and they put it out there, actually did put it out there. And Dad said, you know, hey got back with Dak and it seems like nothing, you know, nothing changed at all. And I had a medium member call me and say, think about this. The Cowboys signed Alden smith who's been out of football four years. It signed just Bright tomorrow
and they won't do it. He says. That's all you need to know. He said this, Bryan is not coming back to the Cowboys. You know. See, it's buying in the newest thing. I don't know. The longer the longer, the longer that we go into this quarantine and not being able to look at free agents and and and the owners having to like lean on guys that they're familiar with. I think this then's the shots get a little a little higher. His chance of being on the team next year gets higher the longer we go into
this quarantine. So what you're saying basically is as long as long as he's putting videos out there of him working out against you know, these these random dds here and there, no one else is putting out tape, So he got a shot out. I agree with what you are now, one man. I mean, he's the only one putting out footage, and he's so baby Dak will give him to give him this two cents in there. But I can see that happening. I can see it happening
for sure. And you know, and you know, they say it's about who you know, all right, he knows Jerry. Jerry loves him all right. So not only is he working out with all the leaders on the team that Jerry loves. Jerry said, you think about him in the shower, all right, So I'm you know, his chances, his chances are increasing. If Mike McCarthy wanted Dez Bryant, they'd have got de right, and think of it. This, okay, here's another another thing that then says, oh yeah, ding ding ding.
So the Cowboys signed kicker Kai forbad all right, They signed him, and days later they go out and give Greg Zerline a three year contract for seven and a half million dollars. Zer Line worked with Jim John Fossil, the special team's coach with the Rams. So Jerry's out here giving guys the players they want. So a special team's coach can go get a kicker signed way over market. If Mike McCarthy wanted Dez Bryant, he'd have had him by now. Clearly he doesn't want. It's Jerry. It's Jerry
that wants. So Jerry gonna give him everything they want and then say, oh, yeah, by the way, this is the guy that I want. Deal with it. Deal with it. I could definitely see that happening with Jerry says back, and then you know why, Hey, y'all got what y'all want. But hey, I'm gonna throw this extra little crumb on their Hey, Dad's coming come back to this team. There's a couple of touchdowns. We'll see what's going on. This has happened before. Yes, this has happened before. We have
seen it. So so that's not out of the realm. Okay, so, or then I'll play devil's advocate. If you want to bring in des Bryant. Where does he play on special teams? We talked about this earlier on the Players Lives. I mean all the things that you're gonna need him to do. He can't play slot. So there's fans out there on social media who believe, you know, oh, we can replace des Bryant. You know Randall Cobb. You know, No, he can't do it. Randall Cobb does. That's not what they do.
So where does this guy fit in your offense? And don't tell me tight end like some people trying to out happen. So you can bring in des Bryant thirty something years old, He's not gonna be back there and returning kicks or punch. I mean, where does this? Where do you? I don't see how this thing works. I really don't. Can galla play the play the slot? Is that the best use of Gallops talent? No, I'm just
I'm just asking for the devil's advocate here. We're just trying to find a way fro him to fit in. Can't he play the slot? I don't think you get playing. I don't think. I don't know. I don't think you know. Go ahead. Oh no, I'm good, I'm good. I think that his current chances are increasing. Knew he knew he is opposite, but you know he also don't like Papato,
so I can't trust them. I think you're gonna sign Aldon Smith, the dude who's been out on the street for four years with all those they said, Nahdes, we're good, We're gonna go old acause that speaks for all used. No, they didn't say it that the d li COO said that he can't use this. The only person that really want this is is Jerry, And if Jerry really wants him. When the chills fall at the end and they haven't found a receiver, that they can feel a spot. Daz
would be first on the list. I don't know, we're gonna see you. I don't know because, like you said, I can't see him playing the slide. I don't know if he can still play on the outside. I mean, I don't know if he's still quick or fast enough. I think he could be a red zone option. I mean, he's still got that jump ball awareness and he's one of the best in the leagues that getting the ball as highest points, so he might be able to slide
in there. It's just how much of the Cowboys wanting to pay him or is he just Hey, I could play for pennies At this point, I just want to get back on the field. I mean, we'll see absolutely absolutely, I think he'll do whatever. And based on that, they're better teams. Okay, there's better clubs where Daz has a more realistic chance of not just going to a team, but being a starter on the outside. Cowboys got Cooper, they got Gallup. I mean, if I'm dead, I want
to go somewhere where I can actually play. And if you're a team out there, this is a guy you don't want those special teams, So he needs to be one of your top two receivers, or if you want to make the exception to make one of your top three. I think that Bryan has a better opportunity than other NFL cities than doubts. So so am I hearing you
say that that's gonna be a starter. I'm just saying for some team out there, okay, all right, you changed changing up a little bit for for some team, you know, for some team, maybe added Gay Swanson. I don't know, but I'm just saying, on this team, they don't need him. They take this note. Church, take the note, Church, take the note. Right now, man, we're gonna we're gonna see we're gonna see training camp hopefully is right around the corner.
So we're gonna see sold on his Twitter video? Aren't you sold on this Twitter videos and him working out? You don't believe he could be a starter of the league. You know, I would put more into those videos if I knew the defender that was guarding him, Like if it was a legit guy giving him work out there, than all right. But he you know this guys out there just slapping around hands and stuff. I don't you know,
I can't I can't put too much into it. Yeah, not based on the videos, just based on what I know about Diz and I know if he's healthy that he can be productive in the NFL. He could be at number one, well, probably at number two receiver, depending on what team you put them on. Yeah, you're not playing special teams. But it's somewhere out there where he's
better than the number two guys. All right, Danny, you and I had an off air conversation I want to bring to bring to the show, and that's about the slot receiver. I don't see the slot receiver being something they addressed early in the draft. They could, but I just also feel like with the way of the receiver position goes, the Cowboys could end up signing somebody in free agency later on after the draft, or we always see guys who get cut in June. I just think
this is a position that they can fill. I don't think that they necessarily need to use a first or second day draft pick on a slot Yeah. Yeah, I don't know, man, Randall. I've had a high production last year, and it's not because he was just to anybody. Cole Beasley has has a high production on the team he's playing with now and we've seen that he's a damn
good receiver. So it's not like you could just plug and play just because you know, just because the system says that somebody can get in there and ball out. Randall Cob was a great slot receiver, and so it was Cole Beasley. So I think they still have to put some work in to find a guy that could fit there and not just try to plug and plug. I definitely think they need to find a guy that can fit and they have to do their homework at
this too. I think, you know, if you have two outside receivers like they're doing Gallup and they're doing Amari Cooper, I think you have to have a guy in that slot that's very quarterback friendly. And as we've seen this two slots in the past, Beasley and Randall Cop, they're very They were both former quarterbacks, so they know what
the quarterback is looking for. They were able to get open against against his own coverage is a lot and it's just extremely smart, intellectual players who can who play the game like chess. And we've seen Randall Cop have an extremely good season if it wasn't for a couple of whole penalties here and there. I mean, he would have been maybe top two receiving on this team. So I think they need to do their homework on a
slot receiver. I think they need to get a real good one that's very quarterback friendly and hopefully he can explode just like Cobb An Beasley did in the passport. Dak Prescott, all right, this is why you hired Mike McCarthy. Mike McCarthy, it's his job to go find one of these guys. It's his job to take a young player, which he specialized in the Green Bay because Ted Thompson was always drafting guys. He can go make a wide receiver. That's why I'm paying these guys this kind of money.
You go find me somebody. They were able to find. Cold beazis an undrafted free agent. The Cowboys are the first team to bring in Danny ammondla unrestricted free agent. I just believe they can find one of these guys. What when we come back, I will tell you why the Cowboys cannot use a first round pick on a wide receiver. Cowby to give you that. Also, this whole Jamal Adams trade. Some of you folks out there have been trying to sit around yar pedal. We'll get into that.

scrub sports. I wrote a column for the Dallas Morning News and recently I've dived into too many mock drafts, and I saw a whole bunch of mock drafts where they were putting wide receiver Cede Lamb to the Cowboys seventeen. And then I read one from our boy, Clarence Hill Star Telegram at Clarence Hill had Jerry Judy, the Alabama wide receiver going at the Cowboys seventeen. Those absolutely driving nuts because number one, Cedee Lamb's not lasting to seventeen
because this players that good, and neither is Jerry Judy. Okay, it's a shame that these guys even get to seventeen because they're that talented, and so many teams need a wide receiver. But what I wrote the Dallas Morning News is the Cowboys are not They can't be in the market to add a wide receiver in the first round. Was so many defensive needs. I mean, who's going to cover somebody? I mean the Cowboys have to address it.
The fact that the Cowboys only have one player, okay, just one player under contract after the twenty twenty season the secondary. You can't sit around here draft a wide receiver. The Cowboys also got a bunch of dudes right now on one year contracts on the d line outside of Tank Lawrence. I mean they signed Jaral McCoy one year deal, don Terry Poets a two year deal, but they get out of get out of it after one All dismissed
on the one. You do. You got to go and look at the D line and try and get somebody who's gonna be here in a four or five year deal. That's where you make your money, fellas, by getting guys under contract for those first four five years and then you let them go to the market if you're on a PAM. But I just don't feel like the Cowboys can go with the wide receiver like a CD Lamb
or Jerry Junior, anybody seventeen there. I sent my piece all right, listen, listen, you're right here, and I'm gonna go Homer with this one to say, the best slot receiver out there at number seventeen is clearly Justin Jefferson the LSU. So yeah, I wouldn't pick none of those either. But yeah, I think I think it would be difficult to draft the slot receiver at seventeen anyways. And we do have some some issues that we need to address
on defense, mainly on the back. Like Nui said, I think we do have a lot of ifs at linebacker as well. We have vander esh with the neck. We have Sean Lee I believe come back on a one year deal, and then our D line is, you know, we got one year deals all over the place, and this all the Smith thing is probably a six month deal. So I think we have bigger things to address other
than receiver. So I'd probably go cornerback our D line. Yeah, I'm gonna make it a three three right here, because I mean there's too many things we have to address on this defensive side of the ball. I mean, they put all their stakes in, you know, Jalen Smith, and I believe they gave who else a contract out there, Anthony Brown and then the rest of the guys. Oh, and they got the market Stoons. But the rest of the guys, I mean, they're all on one year deals,
just like you guys said. And we don't want to get caught in the same situation that we're in on the offensive side of the ball, where we got to pay all these different people or everybody's gonna leave in free agency. So I just think we have to address that defensive side of the ball, especially in the secondary.
I mean we lost Byron Jones. I mean, you got Cheeto out there, and you got Jordan Lewis, But Jordan Lewis to me, is more of a nickel cornerback than an outside cornerback, So you're gonna have to find someone out there, and she who was Yeah, he struggled last year and even the year before that, so I don't even know if you can consider him as you're starting outside number one corner. They lost Jeff Heath, who was a kind of a quarterback of the defense back there.
If they did bring in Clinton Hahig DICKX who is an experienced player and can get the ball at sometimes, so they addressed that need back there. But I think they've gotta look at this defensive side of the ball. There's too many guys on the officers side, about too many weapons over there to even add some more first round talent. I mean, you got Amari Cooper out there, you got Gallup out there, Blake Jarwin, who hopefully will
you transform into this transcendent type tight end. I mean, you got the best running back in the league back there, and you got a great quarterback. So there's not enough balls to go around to add another first round talent
to that offensive side of the ball. I think you gotta stay with the defensive side, and I'm for me, I'm going secondary, maybe a corner, maybe a safety and then after that hitting straight d line the rest of the draft if it was up to me, But they don't pay me to do that side, so we'll it happens Nowise New he's newis uh. We had a discussion
about delp it back there. I just I just said that safety would would be a little difficult for them to draft right now because if you draft one in the first round, who's who's who's sitting Who's taking a back seat? Is it? Is it Clinton Dix or is it Woods? The Woods gotta take a back seat to me, I mean he didn't, so he's going to special teams. They get him, get him to get a big hitter
in the second special teams or something. You know, if you got a chance to add a safety back there with the time like Delpin has, I think you gotta go get get him. Um, but where is how how Dick's gonna play? Is he gonna be that free safety? If that were the case, that means Xavier's gonna be down in the box more. I'm not sure if he's big enough to handle that down there. But we'll see. I mean New he already next to Jamal Adams trade.
But I wouldn't. I'd be a fan if he was able to come down to Dallas and be that box safety. We need another one year deal's let's let's let's spend some more time here on Jamal asks because we got some great comments that are coming here in here from from Cowboys fans, and we do appreciate it. Here's my thing on Jamal Adams and why I do not think the Cowboys can make a play for the player. If you trade Adams, you're gonna have to give up a
premium pit. Most likely you're number one. Then when you trade for Adams, you're gonna have to give the guy a long term deal, much in the same way what you just did with Amari Cooper. You trade it for Mari Cooper. You guys gonna want a long term deal here. And we all know when these guys go to Jerry Jones for their contracts, they want to be paid the
top of the market. Cooper top the wide receiver, Mark Zeke to the top of the running back market, Tank Lawns, top of the defensive end market, Zach Martin top guard. I mean, so you're gonna have to come here and bring Jamal Adams, pay him big, significant dollars. I don't see where they're gonna have that money, especially once they signed Dak Prescott. So from an economic standpoint, you're not gonna have that kind of money to put towards Jamal Adams,
which your best bet. And when you start talking about trying to sign guys, we know corners and defensive ends, the market for those guys is skyrocketing. You can't afford to go to the free agent market to pay. So that's why you got a draft him. Either you have yourself quarter. We dropped Seth the defensive being ahead and correct with that. I just saw that Jadeveon Clowney is dropping his asking price, So maybe the market is changing a little bit with this, uh, with everything that's going on.
He dropped with two million off of it three seventeen at seventeen then, so that market is that market is changing. So three sacks for seventeen million dollars cut off. No way in hell, ain't no way in hell get me Clowney seventeen, Ain't no way. That's that's the first time I've seen that's. Yeah, I'm dropping my price, y'all, y'all
come out. Let me quick question though, so still we're on the defensive side of the ball, and we've seen that, you know, McCarthy has brought in kind of the defensive lineman that he won, brought him pole he got in McCoy, what do we do with Crawford here? I mean, do we keep him on there as a death piece or starting defensive tackle or defensive end, or do we let him go to say cap space. I mean, I want to know what your thoughts on that one, great go go.
I'm keeping like I said, I'm like I had, I gave a thumbs down on all this Smith, So so I gotta keep Crawford, Okay, Okay. To me, Crawford is he reminds me of a guy that the Cowboys used to have named Greg Ellis. Where Greg Ellis was a solid He was a solid citizen and he was a solid player. Um he wasn't d ware, you know, but he was there. And when healthy Crawford helps you, I think they leave him a defensive end. And when you start talking about Alden Smith and Randy Gregory, those are
hope pieces, Yeah, hope they're there. So with those guys and possibly all three guys and rotating guys in here, maybe that's how you end up trying to solve your issues with Quinn, that you have three guys there, and maybe they take chasing from Lsu. I don't know, but Mike McCarthy spoke about wanting to have a lot of pass rushers. He says he wants he says, we're basically becard. They said we're gonna score points, so we need pass rushers.
So Willcarthy's world like as he's thinking, we can score thirty thirty five a game. That's gonna make the other team have to get out there and sling it and throw it, and we can unleash guys there. So I just think if we listen to what the head coach has said and starting to look at some of the moves that they are making, that to me seems that they want to have a lot of guys who can
get after the pass rusher. So Crawford not only stays right now, I think you're at the Pennsylimans the starter church. I believe you're right on that one. And also you know, not only from his on the playfield or on the playability or on the field ability, but his off the field ability. I mean, we were talking about who's the type of guy that's going to be able to kind of you know, r rope in you know the Gregory's
or the Alden Smiths. And I think, you know, Crawford is that type of guy, that type of leader off the field where you know, guys kind of look up to him and look up to him to see what type of direction they need to go in. And I think he's gonna be one of those guys that kind of get those guys going in the right direction hopefully and get the most out of them for this Cowboys team. Why didn't McCarthy go get this guy, Clay Matthews. You I'm just I'm really confused about this all the Smith thing.
I just feel like it was other options out there. I don't understand. Yeah, over all the Yes, Clay Matthews as old as heck. Though he didn't he plays. Did he play last year? He did? Yes, he did all the Smith Ay plays in twenty one fifteen Smith. I have no idea why they signed all the But if I had a choice, I'm picking Clay Matthews over all the Smith. Now, he could prove me wrong. He can
come back and be a superstar. I don't know. But as of today, when especially in the situation they were in where he won't be doing OTA's mini camp, possibly not training camp. This dude's gonna walk off the street and some Timberland boots and then come on the come on the field and playing week one. This is I don't know. I'm confused. I'm confused, but I'm no GM. So if you signed Clay Matthews, who's getting up there starting spot Sean we were just asking about, No, put
him at put him at defensive end. Yeah, you just just let him rush the Passay Matthews is a line play. Matthews is a straight up line. But put him on, put him on the edge, and let him rush. No, there's no room for Clay matt Plus, remember we talked about Alton smith Is his contract is basically incentive based. It's an incentive based contract. Clay Matthews is not coming here under a contract that's not incentive base. But when you got bander Esh, you got jayals Fifth, you got
Sean Lee, there's no room for that. They can't afford his services. Plus, if you watched him last year, this is the guy that God exposes a lot. I just don't think he's what he used to be, which is one reason why Green Bay let him go. And after one year out there with the Rams and upah wait, they decided to let him go. So I think you got to start to read te leaves on him and whether or not you want to commit the type of dollars that Clay Matthews wants. I just don't see Clay
Matthews being fit for the Cowboys at all. He's a friend, just like uh, there's Brian is pick him up. I just don't know what they're reading the front office is reading when these tea leaves about man has been out for four years. Yeah no, no, no matter how much sense and better baking for Clay or any other person that they can play defensive end and rest the pastor. I do not understand this all the Smith at all.
I mean, here's what you and now, as you guys are young, so I've been covering this team and you guys were you know, back in grade school. Jerry Jones has been chasing after that Charles Haley type player for forever, since the nineties when he brought Charles Haley and after Bill Walts was so frustrated with him and got done with him in San Francisco. He's been taking chances on guys like Alonzo Spellman, Dimitris Underwood. Josh Brett came from Ellinois.
He had a bunch of issues, substance issues from Illinois. They still took the chance and brought him in here. They bringing Greg Hardy. This is what the Cowboys do. They bring him this, yeah, pat man, Joe, this is last chance you man, I mean, this is what it is, is last chance you all day lord. They is bringing Jason Brown as assistant coach and maybe he ll your boy buddy, your boy buddy's buddy can come here with some of these days. But this is what they do. Man.
I once had a conversation with with Jerry after he brought in Terrible Lawns and then Teo started causing some friction. And Jerry was being honored by the Boys and Girls Club as their loved like a international alumnus of the years, a really prestigious award, and I asked him, I said, Jerry,
why do you put up with this guy? And Jerry teared up and he spoke about giving people second chances, that he believes in second chances, and he talks about it his in his life, people were given him second chances and basically, if he was deceived, he would he would be okay with it. But he wanted to extend that second chance. And whatever Alden Smith and his agent and Jay Glazer possibly said to McCarthy and Jerry, it worked that they decided that they wanted to take a
chance on the guy. This is just how they do business, man, It's just how they do business. It's it's it's absolutely fine because I'm all about forgiveness. I'm just I'm just seeing this timeline and you got to trust the fact that he won't come in here and cause a big commotion. This is his first stop coming off of this, coming off of this suspension. This is not an easy place. You're gonna get a lot of attention. There's a lot
of stuff going on out here. There's a lot of ways for you to fall back into some of those old old traps that got you in some of the trouble that you were in out there in California. So keeps some eyes on them. You know. The history of it and being out four years is just it's just a big thing for me as far as being a football player. I've been out four years and I know I can't go out there and play, especially without practicing or doing OTAs of man counts. Just it's just it's
not that easy. It's just like it seemed like football is day. It's not easy. It's it's not easy. I'm not debating you on that, Danny. I'm not gonna play Devil's advocate. You know what it takes to play at this level in four years? Is it? That's that's you know, that's like dog years man and trying to end football terms and he's thirty years old. Now, I hear what you're saying, and you, you and Barry are both right
to say thumbs down on this deal. I mean, the most cowboy things to me have said thumbs down on all this. I'm just trying to give you that other side for what I'm seeing of what I think they're trying to do, which is, hey, we're gonna bring this guy in here, is gonna cost us, idiot real money, and we can go ahead and let him go. I mean the Cowboys, I mean, you think about the whole Kicker thing. Why would you sign Zerline? Would you just
sign Kai for back? They're doing some stuff that makes you say, I don't really know, but we'll have to see. Man'll just have to see. This is one of those I was. I was one of those who said I was one of those who said get rid of Ready Gregory three years ago, like just stop doing stop doing the soul. You know what do I know? Man? This is just how they operate. Go ahead for correct? No, Well, one of the times they're gonna make one of these movies, it's gonna work, and then that would be the one
time that everybody's wrong. But you know, this is one of those such a ways. One it works, it works, and you look great. If it doesn't, then everybody said here talking about you on the players, louse what's correct? And I think that will be correct. We'll be correct, and I take that chance. Okay, all right, all right, we have to take another break here. Um. I have been to watch this show for this show, Okay, ever want to watch the specific TV show to talk about

They all are as if to say, so nice to treat you. And even though it feels weird to talk to we, can you pick one up and say it's so nice to be treated doctor Pepper, So nice to
treat you? Please, last year on a Friday, ANEWI scruts joined by former Cowboys players Danny McCray in Barry Church and McCrae is having a hard time the World War. He reads all the Smith's sheet. Bro he got in trouble. For twenty thirteen to twenty eighteen. He was in trouble. So he was just he was so he was recently in trouble in twenty eighteen. In twenty eighteen, Uh, they was talking about him going to some rehab facility that after he beat up a girl his fiance. So we
just that that was. That was two years ago. He was still he was still in trouble. So he just now started to get back and working on Jay Glaiser's program, and we expect him to come on the field and produce. I don't know. So you add you add domestic abuse to this. See, so he got goods, alcohol, vandalism, wrecking cause uh and um and domestic abuse. Yeah, it's not good. It's not good. Okay, let me looked at There's no doubt about it. It's not good. This is the worst.
You also know, this is this is what the Cowboys had done at the past. What's his street telling so what they do. Who have they picked up that was this bad? Who who have they picked up that they had this much baggage with him? It's very harden grand Card didn't have this much. He had he had a domestic violence, uh thing and out all the Smith has one of those plus thirteen other things. I don't know. Okay, if you compare raps, yeah you can rap sheets. No, No,
I haven't seen anybody with a rap sheet like this. Yeah. The people with this type of rap sheet are in jail for years. So when's the last time we saw him having issues? And I guess I also read where he's been sober nine months and that's that's not a long time. But but at all, it's just still some progress for him. But so, when's the last time he was in trouble and craze? You looked at that sheet?
Twenty eighteen TMZ claims the parents of Smith's victim persuading him and to enter a rehab after he beat her up. So twenty eighteen, en he checked into rehab at the domestic abuse against his alleged domestic abuse against his fiance. Well, at the end of the day, let's just hope he you know he is, his demons are all behind him, and he's able to produce on this football field. But
you know, we'll see hopefully he doesn't backfire. Hey, look, if we're being realistic about it, UM, when you talk about people battling substance abuse issues, if you're gonna bet on the person to bet on the player, you should usually bet on the substance. UM met that in Charles Charles um do Higgs book Hacked. You know, it's it's if you have somebody's trying to break a habit, they
have to replace it with another habit. So I don't know what habits that Alden Smith has replaced, UM, alcohol and and and his other issues with domestic I don't know how he's, what type of counsel or whatever he's going through. UM. But somehow the Cowboys feel like they have whatever assurances they need and set up a contract to try to reflect that. And I don't know how. I don't know how they're gonna do it, Honestly, man,
I don't. I don't. But you're right to be as one hundred percent skeptical as you are Church in the same way with you, Dannion Craig, because he has not earned the benefit of the doubt here. There's no doubt, um, And we'll just have to see and we'll see what they do in the draft. I think that this should
not prohibit them from drafting Chason out of LSU. If he's sitting there at seventeen, Um, you got to get try and get some assurances and you know, a five year contract with a with a edge player or a corner if you can there. I was watching a clip. Oh, go ahead, good, I just say it right about Chason. I'm sorry. Probably I'll let you do. You know it. Hey, look, you're not gonna go wrong taking winners. You're not so.
Rex Ryan, the former Jets and Bills coach, was on Get Up this morning, and he went hard after Mark Cooper. He called him a turn, said he vanishes in big games, said that he doesn't show up when he has to play other other big cores. And I evely thought of the conversations that we helped right here on the players line, and you guys had posed some of those same questions
about Cooper getting called a turd. But you guys were tough on Cooper and the disappearing acting and what he hasn't done a road game, so here it is being brought to the light on the ESPN here. But I thought about I thought about you guys when I heard that. Yeah, to me, I wouldn't call him a turd. I mean, he's a good Hilary, he's a good wide receiver. But it's just crazy how it's two different players away games
versus home games. I mean, we see and when he's playing against big time corners or when he's playing against average corners. We've seen the matchups against the Darius Slaves. We've seen the matchups against the Gilmour's out there where where they put the clamps on them when they're physical, and he's not able to do that much. And then we've seen the away games. I mean, there's no excuse for that. I believe it was Philadelphia that fourth and I think it was fourth and thirteen and he's not
even on the field. And then in New York we've seen him kind of get frustrated in his the body demeanor and he's just on the sidelines. There's nobody around him kind of helping them out healthwise, so he just kind of off the field himself. But I just you know, to me, He's kind of a Jacqueline High player, and I think they took a risk giving him this much money.
He is at very explosive player when he's on, but when he's off, he's extremely off, and we do not want him to do to be off in the biggest games of the season like he was last year. So I think they took a medium risk on this guy. But hopefully he's able to turn that, you know, home and road deficiencies into just a one complete season because the Cowboys need him for this offense to succeed. Yeah, the same here. I'm they took a risk. He's still
a great player. It's not taking anything away from him and how athletic and productive he is. He just last year he just couldn't find a way to get it done on the road or against the top competition. Sort of a reminder of like like he maybe should go to New Orleans. They played like trash on the road, they played great at home, so he might might fit
in on that one. Maybe since NEWI thinks that McCarthy is the guru here, he'll get this fixed for Coopers, especially since they gave him with twenty then, and he'll find a way to maybe get them off of those top receivers, I mean, top cornerbacks when they go and play those guys, and when he's on the road, he might have a different scheme for him to kind of
maximize his ability to make plays. I'm telling you, I ain't going to look at guys differently under Mike McCarthy, because you know, I was not sold on Jason Garrett's offense the entire time he was here and how they did things. I think the players were good players, and I think that there were too many players talents who were wasted. I talked to a former player with the Cowboys, and he spoke to me about how upset he was that he felt his teammates talents were misused during the
Garrett era, that they should have done a whole lot more. So, Yeah, I'm gonna wait and judge a guy like Cooper, and judge Dad and judge all these guys really wonder what Mike McCarthy can do. Mike McCarthy's approof and head coach in this league has got a Super Bowl ring, unlike the last coach who was here. So yeah, I'm gonna look at guys differently, and I'm gonna think that Amari Cooper is gonna be a lot better receiver under this
regime than he was priests. Do you think they'll just like, you know, get him As far as with the office, do you think they'll put him in motion more to get him off of that bump and run coverage, because we I mean, we've seen the tap. I mean, Gilmore basically choked him out at the line of scrimmage. Didn't
let him get off this fall at all. So maybe this new office, this new this new regime will get him in motion more, you know, get them in stacks more, forcing the top corners to kind of back off their coverage, giving him more room to work. But hopefully they figure out something. And I think Kellen Moore is gonna have to step his game up as well, because he was the offensive core data last year when they were out there, and you know, he was getting choked out at the
line of scrimmage. So maybe they'll they'll switch it up a little bit. But they gotta find some way to get him involved in the in the road games as well, or this will just be another eight and eight season and we'll all be disappointed again. Yeah, I go back, Danny, I go back to guys like Davante Adams, Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson. I mean, Mike McCarthy's found ways to get those guys in football. That's what I'm gonna put my
trust in God. Who was thrown It was a row throw on the ball to uh to old Carb huh and these and these guys. I mean that's a little it's a little different. I just think that, yeah, he will have to move around and do all that stuff. Some of it is on Coop, Like you know, when it comes down to it, the game of football, sometimes it's just man on man, like you need to get open, Like did you my best guy? We're paying you twenty meal. I got my receiver this week. Hey, Coop, line up,
run this route and get open. And sometimes it's just that and if you if you can't do it, then you can't do it. It doesn't Sometimes it doesn't have anything to do with coach, with coaching. It's just you don't have the ability to be better than the guy that's across from you. And that's what we saw against New England. So now thumbs up for thumbs down on the side of resigning a Mark Cooper. That's why I want to know right now from you too, thumbs up
and thumbs down on is resigning the market. I'm thumbs up. I'm gonna have to give him a thumbs up. I mean, he's too good at home. It's too value put his offense to give him a thumbs down. I just would love to see his road presence as big as it is on the home games. Um. I don't know if it's just his different routine on the road. Maybe he's you know, bored with the game if he doesn't get a couple catches early or something. But we got to
find a way to get this guy the ball. He's too explosive, he's too talented to disappear on the road like this. And like I said, we're going to need him with this offense to to be good or less, we're gonna be another eight and eight team, and nobody wants to at all. I mean, have we forgotten what this offense was before he got here. When they tried to run out Alan Hearns Dean that was a mistake, fire Jason Garrett, that was different. That was a mistake.
That was a mistake. That's an anomaly. No, I don't know what they were thinking at that point. But previously they had they had a top notch receiver that was making plays, and then we had this little loll in between with with the Hearns and those guys. So that was a little rough. Well, I go back to this is what this is one of my frustrations when Jason Garrett was the head coach. So Jason Garrett Scotland a hand.
They were done with des run, they wanted them going, and they came up with this cockamamie scheme to tell Jerry, oh, we're go filling all these other guys, and Dak doesn't have to have death in his ear. He could spread the ball out. And so we're gonna bring in Dante Thomas because he worked with son Jay Lal and Buffalo because there was trash and terrible. They almost got themselves fired at him until Cooper saved him all and they had to give up a number one pick to do it.
So I just write it interesting that, Okay, this guy saved the season, and then now well he you know, Rex Ryan's gonna call the guy turd and I just I don't get it, man. I'm just saying that I don't let me tell you something. The first one, the good definitely always the bad with Coop two. You gotta understand the position that these dudes were in to have to try to come up with these schemes to get DAZ out of there. Imagine how crazy that DZ was driving them, Just like we saw on Amazon Problem on
all ANOHINGDZ was in there driving them dudes crazy. And they knew they couldn't just go straight up to Jerry because Jerry loved them so much and say, hey man, we don't think we can do it with this guy. So they had to come in here and enrich their jobs and trash the whole team just to get them to see that we need somebody else as a top receiver. And they ended up getting Coop out of the deal. They were they were upset. They didn't know what to do.
I was, you know, it's just let's be honest, man, let's be honest. None of those dudes, Okay, not Derek Dooley, not letting Hand, not Jason, none of them would go up to dance and just saying hey man, what you sit down and be QUI I mean, nobody had nobody had to goog on some webbows when truck keep cleaned to sit up and tells, dude, let's sit down, shut up. But they don't want to do that, and so so they run them out and then they get this Cockaonamy scheme and it and it blew up in their face.
So yeah, man, I'm trying to Jason Garrett. Man, then you're trying ten years of futility, man, I mean, just so many, so much talent wasted under this dude. You guys know it's true. You guys know it's true. So yeah, I'm attaching my boat to Mike McCarthy, say you can do this, man, Please do this, because I've seen too many talented guys. We look at last year's team. Man, Look how many guys are making money this offseason and
they only got eight wins out of that group. Yeah, maybe I am putting too much into Mike McCarthy, but Mike, goodness gracious, with just a little bit of better coaching, that's at least two more wins. Ain't newis So let me ask you a question. If if I let me ask you a question, so, what do you think how many wins does McCarthy have to have this season for him to be considered in your as a successful first year as a head coach for the Cowboy. Don't be
light on them Newis, don't be light Newing. You can't don't go. Don't you say eight, eight or nine or nine. I don't want to hear. It's just what I'm going to say right now because it's April second. Let me see what happens in the draft and what they do with the rest of free agency. Let me see what kind of roster he has set, because there's still pieces
that need to get filled in here. I mean for me and you guys know, as defensive players, they got to find a number one corner on the outside or somebody who could be because I Cheeto can't be there number one guy. They got to improve that area. So let's see what else they do. But based on the fact that you've got a division where Washington's not gonna be any good this year. Now they've got Jason Garrett's Giant, so they really won't be any good this year, right stop, stop,
Joe jug Judge, Joe Judge. And then they bring in all these dudes that did Jason had. I mean, you got Cam Fleming going up there talking about he gonna do such and such. I mean Cam Fleming, I mean really, I'm not worried about the giants watching Soon this go come down to the Cowboys in Philadelphia. Cowboys under Mike McCarthy. Can they get his system and Mike Knowe's system up enough, because that's gonna be tough. You guys know that, because that's gonna be a challenge. You When did they get
to work with these guys and implement their system? But right now, I gotta say Philadelphia is the leader in the NFC East, who just knowledge in the familarity of what they've got going on and with an extra wildcard spot this year, I expect this Cowboys team to be in the hunt, if not make the playoffs on the mount car. That's what some expected, so they don't. So in order for him to have a successful first season, are you saying they have to make the playoffs this
first year? I'm expecting the playoffs on the Mike McCarthy. But that may be nine games, but that could also be nine games. I need the number for how many games they need to win. I just told you, man, talk to me after the draft. Revisit this. You're not gonna you're not gonna let me tell you something. I mean, let's be fair here, that's incomplete. I don't have no we don't have the roster what we think we're gonna do. You got roster what I think they have this year?
That got something to work with Church. While you're throwing those shots over there, I'm gonna tell you one thing that we know about Jason year when it was when he's an offensive coordinator. He's history shows he knows how to run the offense and put up some numbers. He got Saquon over the Dandy Domes. I think he will be okay. I wouldn't just count out New York just yet. You you are right to count out Washington because I don't think they're going anywhere no time soon. I'll tell
you this. I'll tell you this though the Dallas better sweep in New York may let New York can get it. W y'all ain't gonna here the end of it. If Garreen come in here, if Garen come in in the Jerry's bron and get it dubs, I don't want to hear it mean name. I'm telling you know he's gonna scheme it up. I'm telling you he go, they'll be ready to play. Do not sleep on New York sleep. Don't sleep on Wahton either. But you know they're in some real, real trouble out there. Who scared? Now, Okay,
we got another bad we can make. I want to make in the bed. I'm down. I'm down. Hey, look I pay you my bets. So I'm let's go now before we run out here. We have five minutes left here. I have binged, watched Ozark, and I am now on season three. Okay, so I'm on season three of that Jason Bateman show on Netflix, and uh yeah, this thing is good. Okay, tell me him now, don't tell me season three. Don't tell me yet. Everybody died. Everybody died d in church. See see now, mccraig, mcraig, have you
even watched you? Haven't you watched those? I finished? I finished Ozark the day thing came out, Newie. What are you talking? Really? Yeah, I'm I think I'm an episode four or six season three, So so just let me, uh, let me let me the brothers come back into the mica like. I don't like the brother at all. Man. Yeah, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna spoil it. Man, if I start talking about the brother, then that I'm a spoiler for you at church. So we're talking about it.
We're talking about it next week. Man, already I can already tell what he's gonna go do. So he's gonna, he's gonna, he's gonna step in it. So I'm just waiting on it. I'm just waiting on him to get involved and stepping in some more so, so we'll watch those Ark is a good show, y'all. Watch that Tiger can yet? I guess yes, Carol bats every single bit of that. And you know what, I liked it. I know. I don't know how people keep saying that it's so bad.
That is? That was good. That was an interesting story. I don't remember this. It was like in two dollars fifteen. I don't remember this happening, Like, do y'all remember seeing this? Dude, No, I wasn't watching stuff like that. No, I mean, I know, yeah, I mean he he had an internet show that. I mean they talked about it during the documentary. You know,
they don't have a couple of dozen people watching. So no, I'm not in zoos at all anyway, But boy, you see how my man Quille O'Neill went out there real quick and try to distance himself from that quickness. What what do you do? What do you do? Update me on that? What happened with Shack? So it was during the playoffs and they were doing a TNT show out of Oklahoma City, and Shack said on the show that he's going to go out there to go see go
see the Tiger King, and they show shock. You know, there they got video Shack there at the at the Tiger King, you know, facility, and he's playing with the tigers. And then he sent out some tweet. They're talking about, hey, Joe, I got two I got two tigers. Yeah. And and based on that, man, you know, social media went crazy trying to get his Shack shot out here buying tigers. He had tigers, and you know, Shack's got all those commercials and endorsements, man, and he quickly was out there like,
I don't know this, dude. You know, I love Tigers, LSU, but you know I'm not I'm not about that. That. It wasn't uh, you know, they coming out, Papa John's boy come out. It was. It was. It was worse things like when Diz had the monkey like, oh yeah, I don't have anymore. It was that kind of thing like, oh no, no, I love animals. I'm not not know. Um yeah, shot in the backpedal real fast, trying to protect them endorsements. But it was smart though, that was smart.
But yeah, and so now the Tiger King is now for Worth. Did you guys read that? No, he's has once. Yes, they transferred it. They transferred him from Oklahoma down here to uh for or Texas because the whole coronavirus things. Oh yeah, yeah, So he's here now and he's m got a ninety four million dollar lawsuit he's trying to throw out there. And then the other lady hated Carol. Uh they're blegedly going to investigate the disappearance of her husband.
So she's back in the nas Oh yeah she killed him. Yeah, them to the top man, Yeah, that's they all those all those people had a little bit something loose. Looks up top up there. Yeah, Jeff Lowe was a bad guy. How does Jeff Loki escape him from that Tiger King thing? Man? I just kept waiting on something that happened to Jeff
