Player's Lounge: Ready for Thanksgiving?

Cowboys players. Here. We took yesterday off and I think it was a very good move by our leader, Derek Eagleton Here Dallas Cowboys dot Com with the news of Marcus Paul and what happened with the Cowboys strength and conditioning coach. I didn't think it would be right for

us to be on here, but we're back today. M Marcus Paul, in his first year as a Cowboys had strength and conditioning coach, had suffered air medical condition, had to be taken to the hospital and he's fighting for his life and we wish him nothing but the best. And Danny and Barry, I wanted you guys to touch a little bit because um and explain to people how important a guy like Marcus is and how he touches everyone,

and also your friendship with him. Dan. Yeah. So, um, when I first got back to come work for the Cowboys, Marcus had just gotten here and he was he was working for coach Warsick. So my coach Wosing introduced him to me, and then that kind of led to us kind of getting to know each other a little bit. And then when coach Worsick ended up not coming back, me and Marcus got a little closer because he was he was running the weight room and I wanted to

go in there and look. Wait, So we were sit down and talk every once in a while, sit down at breakfast, you know, chop it up a little bit. He's a great guy and uh, you know, it was sad for that type of stuff for this to happen to him. And just to touch on how important to stream coaches are. We see the stream coaches as football players, probably more than you see your position coach, your head coach,

and sometimes your family members. Because once April starts, you seeing these guys every single day for at least two to three hours a day. They're tracking what you're eating, they're trying to give you tips on you know, how

to increase your performance. You're doing conditioning, and this goes on from April all the way through January, so you know, it's it's it's really it's really tough for the team to go through something like this because you know, most of the time these guys are really close with their stream coaches. Yeah, and Danny pretty much, you know, he pretty much hit everything. I mean, Marcus is a great stand up dude, the type of guy to give your shirt off his back if he if you need so.

And like Danny said, we met him at during the off season when you know that he didn't have to let us in the weight room to work out, but we needed somewhere to work out, and you know, like the nice guy he is, he let us get up in there. And like when Voss went away or didn't decide to come back, Marcus took over and we were in there with him almost every day and got to

know him, and he's a great dude. And you said, you hate to see this happen to anybody, especially a guy that's so you know, kind and carrying like Marcus. But you know, hopefully he's he's fighting right now. Hopefully you know, he has that fighting spirits, so hopefully he can pull through. But um, like you said, I mean,

it is a terrible situation. But I think it was a great move by Derek and everybody to kind of hold things yesterday, and you know, hopefully prayers and thoughts goes out to Marcus and his family and hopefully he's able to pull through. His family has been coming into town.

The Jones family has been instrumental in helping out Marcus Paul's family during this tough time right before Thanksgiving, and those are you know, those are those are the things that I have seen through the years where Jerry Jones and his family have quietly helped people in the organization during some during tough time. So we definitely send our

prayers out to the Paul family. And also just yesterday, there were a lot of people out there putting out reports that Marcus Paul passed away, and there are a lot of people who had to take those reports down. I just felt very bad for his daughter to had to put out on social media that her father was contrary to reports, her father had not passed, And as an immediate person, I just feel that we have to go back to some type of standard. You can't scoop death.

As Clarence Hill the sport Worth Star Telegram said, there's no reward for being first on something like this. Use the proper discretion. You wait on the team or a family member to confirm if something has happened. And anyway, did you see this happen one more time? In our industry? I just shook my head yesterday. You know, we can all hear things, but when you put them out as reports, as you put them out as fact, the media has

got to be better than that. And fellas I always tell people, I said, this is why they hate us. That's what I said. This is why players hate us because when you see stuff like this happen, and you just see you see relatively the inhumanity any of it. And then did people just take it down? And then don't have you know, Okay, so if you put it up there and you were wrong, why don't you put up a post that comes up and says, hey, I

put out something that was wrong and I'm sought. You know, people just want to hit the delete button act like it didn't happen, Like no, no, no, you put this out here. You said something happen and it didn't and it involved debt that you put out there. Yeah, it's irresponsible, man. And then with that, you know, like you got to realize, like how many people that affects, right, Because these coaches they don't just coach for the Cowboys, They come from

other organizations. They know college kids, they know professional kids, they know other coaches around the league. So when you report something like that and it starts spreading, that's affecting the emotions of people all around the country, not just not just us. There's reading in his family. It's affecting everybody that these work with, his colleagues, all that. So at that point, everybody's thinking that this horrible thing has happened.

And then for you to just go out and then delete it and not address it that, yeah, like you said, that's unprofessional and that's not the way to go about stuff. Just do the right thing and don't rush it. Like like you said, let a family member or an organization confirm it and let let us know what happened, and then speak on after that. But you don't need to be first and excited about reporting you know that somebody

has passed away within one hundred percent. And we talk about Marcus Paul Tweedy, universally loved man through the National Football League. He was a part of five championship teams, two with the Giants and three with the Patriots. A former player played in Chicago with the Bears, and Ron Rivera, who the head coach the watching the football team, he's

a former teammates. There were teammates together. So yes, you know you're talking about a guy that that you know, people in the inner workings of the National Football League know and respect so and fellas you know, I think, and this is me. I think there's a standards the way you got to do this business. And for me, as as I was talking to my people over at NBC five in Dallas and telling them what I knew, and with people that ask things, I take it has

to be confirmed by the Cowboys. We just have to wait the Cowboys or the family. If it's not coming from them, then we don't need to put anything out. And I didn't retweet anybody nothing because I just felt that that's it was just the proper thing to do. And you said, there's a lot of people out there, hopefully they'll be a little bit better about how they go about this because it's uh to put it to watch to see that the things come from his family.

I thought it was very heartbreaking and just how we in the media need to be better and how we treat people and and have a better standard about it, because there's nothing wrong with waiting. There's just nothing wrong. There's no medals, you know, guys that nobody, nobody at my place gives me a medal. If we're first on someone, it just doesn't happen. So yeah, we definitely have to have some discretion and be better about what we're doing and just use a standard. So the Cowboys are three

and seven. The Washington football team is a three and seventeen. They meet for the second time. They will do it on Thanksgiving Day. It will be the final Thanksgiving Day game because the NFL has postponed the Steelers and Ravens game from late night tomorrow on NBC to Sunday. So Danny, I'll start with you. The Cowboys were embarrassed in Washington and didn't score touchdown and Andy Dalton was knocked out of the game on a cheap shot by John Boston.

How much payback comes into this game. How much of wanting to defend the home turf on Thanksgiving Day? How much of the rivalry? Me tell me how much goes into this football game emotionally for the Cowboys. And also you have what happened with the strength coach Marcus Paul. I mean, it's all the above. One is the traditional Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. That's always huge for us as players, because not many teams get the opportunity to do it, and especially not do it how the Cowboys do it.

As far as that whooping that we took earlier this year, let me tell you something, the Washington football team's defense is still a very good defense. Be thinking about going out here and try to get revenge, I wouldn't be thinking about just trying to continue to improve our player the way that we've been doing over the past three weeks. And defensively, you know, they weren't as good as they are now. I think Alex Smith has brought another another

level to their offense. So we're gonna have to fix some things up, but I think that we can get it done, uh and possibly get this win. But it's it's very huge emotionally and and for the fact that we could take over the division league and make Church happy that he can get closer to Nick and SAMs and get a free meal. So it's it's gonna it's gonna be it's gonna be a huge day tomorrow. The players should be ready to have a lot to play for.

You know, it's Marcus will be heavy on their minds and hearts, and hopefully he pulls through and that'd be more inspiration for these guys to go out there and play for him. Yes, indeed, yes, indeedy, it's definitely a prime time game. I mean, look, you're in the NFC and you're you're the Dallas Cowboys. It's just it blows my mind that where do we three seven right now? Washington's three and seven and we have a primetime game

on things given. I mean, I remember when I was in Jacksonville and we were almost undefeated and we were scratching the clawn and they would barely put us on a three o'clock game. So it just must be nice to play for the Dallas Cowboys. But overall, I mean, this is huge. This is primetime game for first place in the NFC East. I mean, it's gonna be a tough one. It's gonna be a tough one. Overall, I think offensively, we've gotten a lot better than the last

showing we had out in Washington. The conditions weren't good and we just got beat down. We got demolished that game. But I think it'll be a different story coming around this game. Offensive line, we did a couple mix and matching with our offensive line and putt you know, Zach Martin at right tackle, and I think that proved to be the best solution. Just put the five best offensive linemen out there and see what happens, and it ended

up being pretty productive. So if we can pull if we can get that same momentum from that line into this game, I think it'll prove dividends against a stingy Washington defense. We gotta get Zeke going on the ground, which I think we can. I think he's starting to starting to roll a little bit, but hopefully we can get him going and that'll alleviate some of the pressure off of Andy Dalton. But our defense, I'm still kind

of concerned about him. I mean, I think I heard reports about about Anthony Brown kind of maybe missing this game or not. But overall, our secondary, they scare me. We're out Treyvon Diggs and Alex Smith, who he's been shaky this season. He's been up and down coming back from that gruesome injury he had, but if he can put some things together, he's still a dangerous quarterback. So overall, I'm up and down about this game. I still got the Cowboys winning this one. But I mean it's going

to be a heck of an event primetime. I mean, you where would you rather be? Let me put a little detail on that for your church before you get all happy about us going on the role. All Right, the Washington football team is the number one defense against the past, all right, So ezekiel Elli is going to have to do work. We are not the only team that they went out there and made it look horrible as far as their dvs defending our receiver. So it's gonna be a big, big challenge and a big day

for Zeke. So we're gonna need him to get out there and do some special our secondary. Let me tell yourself, they'd better focus on that dude McLaren because he is an absolute beast on a bad team. But if you let him get open, if you let him, you know, ute route us up and get down field. Alex Smith can make those throws and they'll be striking the bells

because it'll be some long touchdowns going on. We just need to play a little bit better in the secondary and hopefully Nolan can can can draw up some stuff to where we can disguise and we can get some double teams on their best guy, McClaren. So, I'm gonna piggyback on what you just said there, mccraig. Alex Smith and his experience has been so helpful to the passion game.

Is Steven Simms if you look at his numbers. Since Alex Smith is coming to the game, this is a young man who's who's playing good football now because Alex Smith is finding him able to get out there and find a secondary receiver, not just the first read of a guy like McClaren Jadie mckissi coming out of the backfield. He's been able to you know, if you play fantasy football, you've noticed Jade mkiss has been a guy who's been a top twenty player along with the rookie Antonio Gibson.

So Alex Smith's experience has helped Washington's passing game overall, So the Cowboys are gonna have to stop the run. Linebackers got to be aware for the running backs coming out of the backfield. But yeah, Steven Simms is a guy you're gonna have to look out for because Cincinnati, when I watched the game last week, Cincinnati did did a decent job and not letting McLaurin just torch them.

But on the other side, Simms was out here catching some passes and moving the sticks a little bit, so that they're definitely going to have two receivers in the outlet that you know in the in the route tree going out there. And then of course he got the tight end, and the tight end was a factor in the first game when they when they had Kyle Allen and they beat the Cowboys. So there's another guy that you know in that passing game you're gonna have to

look out for. So Washington is not going to be the easy w I think certain fans are believing that will be based off last week's winning performance in Minnesota. This is still a team that's gonna go out there to compete. Vegas had as it as a three point win. When we come back, let's discuss Andy Dalton because the last time Andy Dalton played this Washington football team, it was not good. Got knocked out. Let's get inside the mind of the quarterback and a possible revenge adding for him.

Man, we could barely understand what he was saying. And I

always felt that these were the effects of boxing. You know that we talked about CT and NFL players, And so when I see guys in there like Tyson and Roy Jo, I'm like, man, get out, stop taking these blows to the head. Get out while you can, man, because that's you're not gonna watch. I said, I'm gonna watch. You just said what would I preferred you watch? I would rather say said which, you know, which was going

to be more entertaining. Minus you know, like listen, they fight, so they're not getting out the ring they're getting in, so you gotta take that part out. I do not get any pleasure and watching old dudes fight none. Zero. I don't. I just don't. I just don't. That's I didn't see a clip. I didn't see a clip of Roy Jones getting worked out in Russia, and I'm like, man, he'd been not coming there with Tyson looking like that. Listen, the last time we saw Mike Tyson it wasn't pretty either,

all right. So all that trading on the bask it's a little something, all right. So they both they both probably a little rusted, so it's a perfect matchup. They all right. To watch Lennox Lewis take on Mike Mike Tyson and Memphis, that was, that was. That's just not the way I want to remember him. To watch Muhammad Ali taking on Larry Holmes when I was a kid, to watch Ali getting beat up in Larry Holmes looking at the referee like, why haven't you stop this? I

don't want to do this. Um No, I don't because it's for me. It's I want to remember these guys a certain way. I don't want to look at them in this ring and see them in this fashion that that's just's just me. That's all these guys mean. It's it's it's a hard sport to walk away from None of these guys, dude, none of them walk away when they should. It's it's uh, Marvin Hagler, that's the only guy who walked away. You know there's another guy I would see Ken Norton when when he would come to Cowboy games, because Ken Junior was playing back in the early nine years and it was hard to, you know, to to it was

hard to to hear him. And so so yeah, we're different on that good good, good, good good good one, Danny. But I'm sorry, I'm sorry I let you down again. Sorry. By the way, how was how was? Last week was Andy's first game backs and stealing with COVID and that concussion. How much payback do you think is in Andy's bundy about this football game and wanting to get this win all Thanksgiving Day in front of the country. Go ahead, be church, he gotta, he gotta, he gotta play well for you for your dreams to

come true. So go Yeah. No, I don't think much of revenge is gonna go into this one. To be honest with you, I think this Dallas team is gonna go out there and I think they're focused. I think they're focused on one goal and that's that's getting to the NFC East or winning the NFC East. And we know Washington stands in their way. So I don't think there'll be a lot of you know, dumb cheap penalties here and there, because they know they're not good enough to go ahead and go out there and get all

these penalties and still win the game. So if they're smart, if you know, coach McCarthy got to them and uh and goat in their heads and let them know, like, look, there's no there's no reason to be out here retaliating on this Washington team. Let's just go out there, just beat them within the whistles and beat them with our pads and our play. And I think they'll go out

there and do that. I think Andy Dalton, like you know, I was wrong last week, but I think Andy Dalton will come come to play this league as well, and he'll go out there and lead this offense, and I think he'll show some confidence in the offense and be

able to move it down the field. I think Kelly Moore comes with a great game plan once again, and as long as we get the ball to our stars, like McCray always says, if we can get it to Cooper who had a who had a quiet night, but he had good stats, if we can get him the ball and that in that type of volume as well as feeding Zi opportunity to beat Washington and take over first place in the NFC East. Yeah, I'm with you, Church. I don't I don't think it's about revenge. I actually

I hope it's not. I hope he's focused on doing what he needs to do to win the game. And not like focusing in on Bostick or trying to take advantage of linebackers, or thinking about how he took that hit last time. Focus on the task at hand, which is getting the ball to nineteen, turn around handed to twenty one, manage getting the ball out of your hand quickly because you know the pass rush is coming. Just do those key things that you need to win the game.

And I think that, I really think that they might have a chance to pull this one off. Church. I'm gonna be with you this week. I'm just I'm just letting you know I'll be with you this week. But Andy, don't go ahead and focus on what you need to do, man, and you can get this thing done this game, this game. I got some cool aid for you, Man, I got some cool AIGs. They can hear the hesitation in your voice. Man, you almost over that that line. You're like, Man, you know what, Church, Listen, listen, listen, put put put your GM head on at the end of the season, or actually right now, I don't want you to forget that even though that were playing for

first place, were still three and seven. All right, don't don't let that mask up the fact that we are three and seven football team. All right. Back back when we played it, we was four and twelve. It wasn't nothing massed up, a right. The only thing that that was different was the division wasn't as bad as it is now, all right, So so don't don't mask the fact that we were three or seven. Say, look, you're already trying to convince yourself that the Cowboys aren't going. Yeah,

I'm telling you here the hesitation already see it. Man, you're trying to convince yourself that you're right that the Cowboys have no chance. But they do. And I got this cool a for you knew it, you too. Let me we'll want to pile man. Let me know we yall we will ask man, we will. We will make the official predictions and give the score for what we think will happen on Thanksgiving Day. In the next segment,

They're not making tackle for losses like they're crazy, but they're covering up a lot of their mistakes by hustling to the football. Come out and do that and they'll be fine. But the smashing watermelon things, to me, it was irrelevant. That doesn't make much sense as far as getting the players hype the night before the games, I promise you they want thinking about the Dame watermelons while they was warming up or kickoff. Yeah, this one is

solely on the players. I mean, if you got to get extra motivation to go out there, I guess a division rivalry for the gains arrival for the first place in your division. I mean, you're in the wrong business. I mean this comes down to simple man on man, bone on bone, football embarrassed the time. That should be the added that should be the only motivation you need

to go out there. You went up to Washington. Yes, the conditions were terrible, but you went up to Washington and they literally smack you in the face and sent you back to Dallas only scoring three points. I mean, if you need any more motivation, like I said, you're in the wrong business. But I think they'll be definitely highly motivated to go out there and defeat this Washington

team that embarrassed them up in Washington last time. So overall, I don't think that you know, the watermelons, all that good stuff. I don't think they'll need to do any of that. I just need to think they need to stay focused on task at hand, and I think they'll come out with a dub. Mike McCarthy said it best. I thought last week after the Minnesota win, you have to make this win means something. And when he says that, he means, hey, we've got to turn this into a

string of some victories here. The Cowboys still have the opportunity at this point in time to win the NFC East. So it's going to be a good football game in my opinion. And these kids come in there and I think it was where's the security at They're about they're about to tell Verry Tree, man, Cherry Tree about to fall down, and uh so, so that if you're out there, you know, you know, let me know how long that tree's gonna make it, because I'm I'm worried. Man, I don't worried Jerry Tree gonna get all jacked up before before the end of the weekend. Man, And no mask on that tree every and maintenance on

was gonna happen. I told y'all, you know, and Aaron Donald was gonna get that interior pressure on Tom Brady and he was gonna struggle, and that's exactly what happened. He threw multiple interceptions out there. So that's beside the point. Let's let's go ahead and get to this Thanksgiving contest between the cow Tells, between the Cowboys and and UH and Washington football team. Um. This this was a tough one.

This was a tough one because last how we went up there, we got embarrassed and Gibson, he went off on us. The run game was was out of this world for Washington. I felt like they did whatever they wanted to and that opened up their past game and Kyle Island was able to pretty much pick us apart. But I think it'll be a little bit different this time. I think as a whole, you know, the conditions won't

be as bad as they were up there. It was rainy, I was sloppy, and you know that's not an excuse for all the mistackles we had up there, but it will definitely help being in the in the Cowboys facility. So I beat us with his arm and I just don't think he'll be able to do that. You know, it's been a good, you know, good story for him

to come back and be able to battle. But I think this Cowboys defense puts it on pretty and we provide pressure, and I think he calls up the ball multiple times, and overall, I think the defense wins this game for us, contrary to belief. You know, everybody thinks Andy Dot is going to be you know, this lightning rod for our offense. But I think our defense overall wins this game for us. I got the score being for twenty four thirteen Cowboys. Wow boy, you got okay?

All right? Not not just the defense, the defense of secondary is going to win the game for us. Yea, oh man, you heard it here first the Crussian cover working together, man running deep in the deefend the veins of Bury Church. Yeah, I already know. I'm kind of with you on the pick of like who's gonna win, But I think you got it. I think you have it totally wrong on how this game is going to play out, all right. I think this is going to

be a higher scoring game than that. I'm looking at something like thirty two, thirty two to twenty one, thirty three, twenty one somewhere in there. And I think that the Cowboys will find their way, listen, the defense is playing better, the offense is playing better. At some point the special teams is going to tie this all in and everybody's gonna do it. Do it at the same exact time. All right, they kind of did it against Pittsburgh, but

we still lost that game. I think this will be the game where we play a full, complete game on all three phases and we get this thing done. The special teams will make a play, uh, you know, possibly to help us give us a lead. The defense will play better, but I think we're still going to give up a lot of yards in the air and probably

over one hundred and fifteen on the ground. I still think we're going to be giving up some yards because you know, Washington is playing better and Alex Smith can get things done much better than Kyle Allen, I believe. But I do think that Ezekiel Elliott, I think I think Alex Smith is better than Kyle Allen. Uh, you're right, You're right, You're right, and there's no doubt about it. You are right. What we don't talk about Alex Smith

fourteen we talk about Smith. You you obviously have not watched the Washington football team game over the last few weeks her two touchdowns in four interceptions. One of those games he's playing, he's playing well, and you'll see he's playing better than cow Well. I've been looking like a church at church. As you said it, it don't even matter. No, listen, listen, I know he has, he has, he has, but two of those have been against the Cowboys, the team that he's over here talking about. It's gonna ride in the wave and win. Listen, let me tell you something. Look, anybody in their right mind could have picked Pittsburgh to beat US, uh two weeks ago, all right, so it was hold on, Now we acted hold on. I didn't break that down specifically and say, hey, it's gonna be

a tighter game than most people think. It's gonna be about twenty four seventeen and exactly that's exactly what it was. So let's not to say I picked Pitsburad they're gonna blow them up. I told you exactly what was gonna happen to Church, and it happened. What else? What else? Use this? I'm gonna use this. I'm gonna use this against you because you said the spread don't matter, So that's irrelevant to you, just like the rest of the game.

What is the number one side dish in the McRae household? Danny starting, Man, Look, I love cranberry sauce. I love turkey and my stuffing, and and that's my number one. I could eat stuffing all day if you just give me the right cranberry, so not the one with a little mini cranberries. And

they're just a straight jelly and I'm good. So stuffing is number one for meat for me, and I haven't had this in a long time because we usually play on things giving. But I gotta have my mom's mac and cheese, man, not that regular mac and cheese. You know they put a little No, I'm talking about the five cheese you got, the velvita, you got, the all there's five different types of cheese. You throw it in there and put it in the oven. You' oh man,

it's scrumships. It goes with anything, and it even tastes better three days after. I mean, it's remarkable. But gotta go mac and cheese for me. A little burn on the top, little crisp on the top of oh, you already know it, the little oh you got, the little charge on it was bubbling on there. Oh oh man, it's mouth water. I missed my mom stuffing, man, my mom, because the great grandmother could make an unbelievable stuffing. So um my mom did it. I mean she and my

great grandmother. Man, they did it all. I mean you watched them make the turkey, They made their own roles, they made the mashed potatoes. That I mean, they made everything. Everything was from scratch, man. So that's what I can't stand about. This COVID that I can't have with my mom threw together. So but the dressing was amazing to go along with that. Uh and then she took that. Then she made her own gravy. So you know you see the old for the turkey though, scooping it up

in there. But I know what it was, the corn star to the fly. But it did it in that cast iron skillet, you know what I mean? Yeah? Yeah, might I might eat tonight, bro. I might not even wait for the mall. You know, you know the white gonna start cooking to night. I might the place might not make it to them all. So ye y'all talk about food now? So will you eat eat during that Lions Texans game? Or you eat before the Cowboys play?

How do you go about your Thanksgiving? Me? I eat like three times that day man, So I'm eat for the Lions game, I'm eat for Cowboys game. Since they canceled the next one, I gotta find something on Thursday to watch on Thursday night to watch, but I'll be eating getting Thursday night as well, the same stuff, same play for me. I won't be able to start grabbing. I won't be able to grab until about eight o'clock because I'll be doing the show down at the Star,

so I have to wait to grub. But when I do, get sorry for you. Sorry, save a play for your boy, man. So so what about breakfast? Do you do a Thanksgiving breakfast at all? Oh? Yeah, the waffles on there, monkey bread, all that stuff. Man, it's unbelievable. Nope, I listen. Whatever time I get up, that's what time I'm eating Thanksgiving food. That's it.
