Player's Lounge: How Many Wins in 2022?

Danny McCray. They played in the league, undrafted free agents, made it against all eyes. Yeah, to roll up down there on them Sundays and get things done. I'm merely just a guy talking about the game, awarding the need to hand them out. Now. They don't do that. No, they don't do that. He rep today too. He replace Derek Kinggleton and I you know, okay, but the dog ten y'all said, it's my founders though you felt like just just just wanted to do it. It's curse too.

So I had to go go there to the luncheon, and so they were selling gears. I went in there again and then I got hit by the shot by the price hold five membership flation. You know they didn't kids, Lasian, here's hit. You must pay it. Okay, it looks good, so let me go ahead and tag it up in

there and get it. We had rookie mini camp this weekend. I came out on Friday because because I just they've opened up the locker room man for the first time to go in there, going on my room. Yes, you gotta wait outside in the corner of Hit. No, we got to go. So that was that was That was fun, like, hey, hey, everything is still the same up in here, and and

that was cool. I wanted to see Tyler Smith, the first round draft pick, and you will both be happy to know he has the makeup of what they look in terms of offensive linement. I'm not trying to be a jerk when I say, but when you look at him on tape and even on TV a little bit, he looks kind of Doughey, you know, he looks like but when you see him like, oh no, no, this this is a guy fits right in here. Um. And once they start to get him on that workout, you

know he'll he'll look like a Terrence Steal. So you know, the Cowboys do not draft fat offensive linement. Okay, that's not their thing. They don't do that. I mean, this kid is gonna he has um the body, the makeup of what they like. It could be an opposing figure out there just right. So there's a lot a lot of work to do. They had him lining up at left guard. Heard that, so they had him over there and they're trying to get him ready to talk to

Joe Philbin afterwards. That was another good thing to be able to talk to some of the coaches. So Joe Philbin said, you know when started him right here and we'll see where we go. U talk to him. That's my first time I got to meet him. He's everything that his agent told me he would be. Just in a conversation. Okay. So so um, Tyler Tyler Smith has

got a long way to go. He says he hasn't yet had opportunity to uh get with Tyrn Smith, but he says he's looking forward to he says Zach Martin sent him a text, and he's basically like, just what tips? What do I need to know? So he wants to learn has he played any guard in college or who was strictly at tackling his whole you know, collegiate. I want to say he was. He was at tackling, start on defense, then he went over to offense. But what

he has is a want to to learn that. Okay, I don't know what I don't know, so let me know. How can you help me? So it's gonna take him, it's gonna take him a minute to get there. So he haven't told the Tyren Smith yet, you know, no text, no none yet. Um, he's guess. I guess he's been busy. But they're there. You know, he plans on, here's he plans on. How do I you know, get me that hit pocket? Yes, those are the two that that shop. I'm showing up at the door. Hey, what's going on? What? What? What?

It's me? They got a solid room, like you know, I got a lot of rooms, and you know in the National Football League, different you know, you units, they kind of all look out for each other. And they've been like that, you know, since I can remember, since Tyron Smith first got here, you know, Zach Martin, when Frederick was here. All those guys are extremely tight and they're a great bond and they developed players just as good as the coaches do. Just you know, hey, come

here to my hip pocket. I'll show you how the ropes or I'll show you how it's done. And hopefully he gets in there and and he kind of soaks everything up like a sponge. Like you were saying, you rarely hear of the offensive line room having those type of leadership issues exactly on the Cowboys like you had Leo you know last year, have his have his hiccup.

But other than that, the offensive line room has been a model of leaders out of making sure that they all stay together, they all gonna eat together, they make sure they look out for each other. So Tyler Smith is he's walking into a good room. But he needs to get in touch with Tyron Smith and he needs to make sure that he builds that relationship with Zach Martin as quickly as possible because he will be out there. They lined him up at left guard. He's going to

be playing. He already with the ones. When you when you're out there. Oh yeah, was out there. There's some dude like he's not gonna beet quarterbacks. Those quarterbacks. Yeah, they need to say Cooper Rush got it on a lot right now, go ahead, go ahead, bring. Yes, he had all the intangible he just you know, he didn't get an opportunity. Yeah, listen, man, listen. I don't know what you and Church got the same agent. I don't know something's going on. I don't know if he's in Washington.

Another yea, you probably called him many Look I should come back down to Dallas dot com. So the other thing I wanted to bring up about Tyler Smith, he was a finance major at Tulsa says he hasn't got a degree yet, but he signed his contract so I think it was thirteen million bucks and he's got in the contract and he said, uh, he's already got a finance person that he's working with, so they're going to take care of that for them. So I'm looking at

the player. He seems that he'll do everything he can for himself. We'll just have to see if his talent can you know, obviously he's a projection. Can he can he get where he needs to go? But I just look at the player, I say, Okay, I think that guy will do everything he can in his power to try to be a good football player. The rest of it, you know, we don't know through injury what not, but just the ability, the want to. I I my first

impression says, I think he'll do that. He seems like he's really raw, like he's just you know, like he's a writer project right now. Man, you know he's not a simason. Then he got to you know, do some things in there to get his technique right in hand placement and all getting his feet right and all that stuff. But you know, if what you say is correct, you know, hopefully he can go out there soak it all up and he can use that talent, you know, to take

him to the next level. You just gotta learn from one of the best. But listen, I'm gonna listen to New You listen, he called Trey von Diggs. Okay, So after we see Tyler Smith go out there and play a little bit, if New he gives them the stamp of approval because he was offensive Linement back in given is who I talked to out Nate. Nate was out here as well, so I mean, nobody's just gonna know that that guard position like Nate Newton, and I'll take

another guy he needs that. Smith's really needs to get with. That's Terrence Steal because he made a big league figure he's at. Yeah, he's a lot more towards Terrence Steal in terms of you know, just ability project. You know, then then he is I mean Zack Martin was. I mean, think about it. He was the Bowl game MVP at Notre Dame, at guard MVP in a bowl game up for Notre Dame, and then of course you know Tying

played out there at USC. So so Terrence Steele's another guy I definitely out of get in his pocket about what to do, because I mean he came from the Big twelve where they're throwing the ball. He had a big adjustment. We saw how he struggled his rookie year, and and let's let's be honest, the way and what we're talking about with Smith coming from Tulsa trying to switch positions, he may end up struggling some the way

Terrence Steele did. I just look at Terrence two with a whole lot of respect of that guy did the work, and that's what everybody said Steele put in the work, wanted to get better, and he did it. So so if he can end up being a kind of football player, he's been maybe a little bit better then the Cowboys,

the Cowboys can feel good about it. Yeah the day. Listen, my man, dude, Tyler Smith, Right, Okay, don't do him like you did Terren Still last season, because that is the one reason why we were so upset when we watched Terrence Still go from what he was the previous year to how he played last year when he got in for Leo Collins, and we were like, this dude has done the work. He's been in the way room, he put in the time, and now he's gotten on the field, he's shown what he could do. Let him play.

He's gonna get a chance this year, and he's going to also be one of those guys who Tyler Smith can lean on because he's going from not knowing really what to do and coming from the Big twelve and trying to figure out how to how to play the game. Now it's a guy who you can tell, hey man, this is this is what you don't want to do, and this is what you need to work on. Uh, you know, so you don't go through the same stuff

that I went through. So, like I said, this offensive line room is a great offensive line room to be in. For Tyler Smith, it's a great spot to be in. Like you said, they're tight. They kind of move like a herd, and you never see them, you know, one of the one by themselves. They all kind of move as one. So hopefully they can transfer that onto the field and they can you know, play great this year. But I want to ask you about the d defensive side of the ball, Like when rookie, what did the

second round pick Sam Williams look like? Because I mean from from over ports, everybody's gushing all over them. So in your opinion, what did he look like out there? Did he have some birds? Did he has some you know, some off the edge? What do he got? So I talked to a scout, to some particular Scott, I keep in good contact with him, and I said, Sam, and he just and he just shook shook the head. Oh oh,

he said, yall who couldn't see that? It was like man, it was he said, did anybody, he said, did anybody call oldness? Huh? And he said, look, we know for a fact, there's there's some teams who took him off the draft board. Okay, it took him off the draft board.

And he said, he will charm you, but their issues And if you've had the issues there, what are you gonna do when you come to the Dallas Cowboys and you have money and you guys know because you played it, it's a whole you know, being a cowboy matters in this town, being a Cowboys it's it's good credit. Is The thing is can he play well enough to offset any issues that he that that might come up? All right, now here's what I'll tell you I took from Kent.

Dan Quinn was about that guy after practice you saw him working. I just said, in my life to hear right there after practice and so another another beauty of you know, coming out to camp and why you want to get it. Dan Quinn came and talk to us, and I specifically asked him, you went to Old Miss you worked him out. What was it that you saw? And he said, yeah, I got to do the drills and afterwards he said, I went to went to Mike and I said, that's a guy really would like to coach.

So and he spoke about all the different things he saw from from Sam and and his ability. He really wants to coach him and he thinks there's something there that they can they can you know, pull out. I go back to his time in Seattle, and Seattle was a team that took chances on guys you know from you go back to Richard Sherman and even even Russell Wilson. And there's a guy people like, oh, you know, look at some of the draft picks. I don't know about

this guy, Frank Clark. Oh, he has some issues in his back. They were able to get something out of the players. Obviously, Seattle's way up here, and you know, you know, a lot, a lot, a lot of your friends can get to you and whatnot. So so we'll see what happens here. But he was excited about the player and what he felt the player could do, and he's talking about, hey, we're gonna try him at different places. So he's trying to figure out in his mind, I

think I got a piece. How can I use this piece? You saw what he did with Michael Parson's last year, So he's looking at this player and the play years in the lab. What I would love to have a one on one conversation with a guy like Sam is to say, look, do you realize the opportunity that you have that you're playing for a guy that took the last dude and made him not just the rookie of the year, the unanimous everybody that's the guy could have been defensive okay, and was, you know, in the top

five of defensive place. So that's what that If you listen to that guy and you take advantage of your opportunity, you can And if they're gonna be worried about parsons, you be worried. You're gonna be worried about d law they're gonna be worried about dicks. You have an opportunity. And what do we know about guys who can get to the pass? They'll pay you a lot of Okay, quarterback money is here, that's way over there. But after that it's dudes who can get to the quarterback. What's

the number eighteen nineteen a year? It's twenty did get twenty twenty minute? I can't, I said, Buffalo. So so that that's what it's gonna be. The you know, the you want to tag a guy, it's gonna be twenty minutes. So this this the opportunity this man has, This young man has, and and he's spoken about how things have changed him in his life since he had his child. So I look at the second round pick and I

just simply say the opportunity is tremendous for him. He's coming out of Old Miss with twelve and a half sacks, and Dan Quinn spoke about that. I mean, this is you played in the league. That's no, that's no Trump League now. And when you're talking about Old Miss, let's just be honest. They're not Alabama. Okay, They're not running

out a whole bunch of first round dudes. Um, they you know, you got a couple of good players, but you know, for the most part, you know they're they're not running out a bunch of these It's not LSU. Man ain't running a bunch of dudes out there like that. It's not Bama. So for you to get twelve and a half sacks, that that says something. That's saying something. So will he take advantage of his opportunity because last year's player in the second round that they took from

the SEC has has some questionable judgments. Yeah, just SEC, all right, don't don't give it. Don't don't give him to us, like, don't give him to us. He did it there for a while, and then he wanted he would have. Kentucky said, we're okay. Look look and and and this is what I've said about Kelvin Joseph. And it's fair when that less you invite you to leave. When that less you say you're too hot for us.

Some issues man, and and and then from from I heard people Kentucky be like, hey, thanks for we appreciate your time here. We don't need you back in your or you don't need to pay your dues. We don't want you an alumni association. So in the SEC like, um, yeah, Now. I also had someone here in the building tell me

he was playing good. At the end of the year, Mike McCarthy was asked about Calvin Joseph and the press conference, and he said, look, you know, we we think there's still obviously more there's gonna have you know, there's there's still more there. They're working on fire. But they think the best thing for him is to be here. He was in the locker room by the way Friday, when we're leaving. He was sitting down there like in the media, good old Joe Trey Hay's got a gun. The boy.

They was ready. They were ready if you wanted, Yeah, we were. You watched that we was about to get shut down. And they had the great line that they didn't say it, but I've been around these guys long enough to know since they got here, but they were gonna say just rookies only, that's what they're gonna say. If we want to just they ain't even let get you the opportunity to goverre. They were watching, they were watching us, and I'm looking at my camera over there.

They had their eyes on you. It was like locker room over there. He was okay, So he wasn't there when we opened up the locker room, you know, we all ran over to Tyler Smith and then the third rounder and we went on chatted with him. But all of a sudden, towards the end, we see Calvin Joseph come out and he sits down to his locker. He's like, oh, well, I means man. You know, you know how it happened to like you be sitting at your locker after the game and then they interview you and then Romo walk

in and everybody take our run man. Man answer, I'm gonna take your pads off. Oh y'all y'all done? Yeah, nothing else, y'all need nothing else. Sure we had to pick six today. Romo walk in and then sprinting is like one dude like damil when to somebody like because we're friends, I try not to dart my eyes when I see that happen, because you're trying to look at the corn of your eyes and photo answer you too. I don't want to talk to me all right, church is about it. You kind of talk to each other

like like like offensive line. He try to let each other like when he's when he finishes the answer, we're breaking out. He saw the song go that way. And then there's other people around you and they talked about it too, And then sometimes the PR guys will announce it. Um. For instance, Romo's going, Romo's going to you know, going to the podium where those hey dacks going to the podium, and he's like, okay, how do we how do we slide? And so we're talking to Dan Quinn on Friday, and

Quinn was okay, I know, okay, it's fine. It's fine. I understand you gotta go, but if you want the outfinish. But I mean he knew everybody know the drill man. This is what it is. But thanks Church, we appreciate it. We got we gotta you just see smoke, right who you might got really money? You see the some captain heard a camera. You ain't even miss it down, put it down. He still got the micy. What is going on? Man?

It is? It is what it is. Bro. It's like, you know, we gotta get that that that sounds so and and and if you're working solo, then you've got no choice. When you talk about Dave hell on the Dallas Cowboys dot Com, well Dave can stay there because Nick Eaton will beginning of something else. Right, So if you're working solo, you can't miss certain guys because you

know you gotta go get them. So you know, you're trying to make sure you gotta Sam how and the other day, so Quinn is talking and it's really good. Dan Quinn's a really good talking and explain stuff a lot. So Dan is talking, and then you hear Joe Trehan say, guys, locker rooms open. Now, they're only going to be here

for a little bit. So you hear here in the background saying, so you're like, oh, okay, so we do need to go and make sure you get some people and so but I wanted to hear what Quinn had to say because I was very interesting. How but I know I missed some guys. One of the guys I missed with Marquis Lee, the kid from Florida, and m the safety. So I didn't get him right, I'm very actually so well, dan quincaid, I got him playing linebacker right now we'll see, you know, and then we'll just

see so interesting. It's just got be interesting to see what, you know, what dan Quincy's and how and how guys

can adjust. And they kind of admitted they probably worked them too hard on Friday, and when Luca these gir old Saturday, we know dan Quinn gonna see it, Okay, like benefit if if if their futures are in When you're telling me that dan Quinn is walking up and down the field with guys, anybody that I see dan Quinn or here about dan Quinn walking up and down the field with guys, I'm I'm I know that he's

putting a little bit extra into that. And the last guy that we saw him do that too was Michael Parsons. All right, So I can see Trey von Diggs being one of those guys where he said, hey man, this is what you need to do. These are some guys that I coached that they did this in year three, four and five and this is what made them great. I can see him doing that hopefully the talisman now kidding, but I can see him doing that to some other guys on the dfense and making them be helping them

become great players. I have the ultimate faith in dan Quinn. Top ten. Again, you'll feel good about this. Afterwards, when we got to talk to Sam, he spoke about his relationship with dan Quin and called DQ and he said, we get along. You know, we talked to each other. So he feels comfortable with his coaching. You guys have

played in the league. Um, there is something to be said when you believe in the person who's coaching you and you feel that they believe in you as well, that you're okay, I'll go that inch guy, inch, We listen, because we've had some coaches where you look at to do it. He'd be like, Bro, you don't know what you're talking about, and that's to run through the entire room of like and I'm not about to do that. Get people questioning. Seems like one of those guys, one

of those guys. Nobody's questioning his scheme, his plan, the technique that he's trying to teach based off whatever he's trying to get accomplished, nobody's questions. And that We've been in locker rooms where there have been coaches who were walking there with some stuff and you'd be like, nah, why why so why are you? Why are we lying the outside and this coverage? Why am I looking back? Why am I doing this? And then all of a sudden, nobody has trusted the coach, and then that that effects

the play, whole room, the whole rooms. They start running their own I'm doing this running cover too, man, we know, act like y'all don't see him, and then that's what happens and the room falls apart. So so that to me was a promising conversation where you just said, okay, man, that's that's pretty cool. And Sam also he was very good when up charming, Yes, very charming, very very entertaining, and he spoke about how he didn't start playing football till late in high school. He said, I was a

basketball player. That was my sport. It's a big time basketball guy, he said. But and he started somebody asking go play football and get himself ready for basketball. So he said, all I ever got was football offers. Nobody offered me anything in basketball. So it's like, okay, And I asked him, so, who tell me? Man? What was your game? Like? Who you know? Who's your coming? Lebron man? Get listen, just stay out of serve. I think you could be great. All right, lead all that Lebron leading.

I don't want to see your lifetime fitness. So fitness, none of that over there on the court and doing all that stuff, Bro is over Okay, your time is not dedicated to dead Queenn and learning everything you can't for him to be a great players. Relying next to Michael Parson black Luca. You know he said the past. You know he's gonna come down Rusalo. You know, so everybody swearing that it's as long as he nasty like Luca, as long as he got that that that, I'm gonna

post you up. And then I'm he too small posted up eight too, Hey, Luka, don't play, man, I don't know what's going on. Come on, he's coming at your neck. What's what's going on? I mean eightness who the scouting reports and he was coming out of Arizona. I mean, you too bear to be like you let Luca back him down. I mean he just to be that big and that skilled, you would think he'd be more dominating than he is. But he lucas a monster. Now, okay, so I'm not gonna judge the man based off what

Luca was. Everybody, everybody, I'm a college basketball fan, and I go back to Arizona where Ayton was that and he stayed a year. They got beat in the first round by Buffalo, and the one of one of the issues they talked about was he was kind of a floater. You know, hey, when the guy wanted to play, but you know, sometimes he'd be floating around and you and wait a minute, right, And if you're not dominating dudes every night there, good luck trying to go to the

next level to do it. And what was crazy at the time when I had my radio show, I had Igor Kokoskov, who was at the time the head coach of the Phoenix Suns. He also coached Luca over in internationally, and I can't remember which tournament they won over there, but it was him, Luca and Drogic. But anyway, he had firsthand knowledge of Luca and he basically told me on his show, on my show, we need to be drafting that guy. But the owner, Robert Sarver, wanted DeAndre

Hayton because he went to the University Arizona. So and my thing was, just why would you take a center in a league now that its devalued that where a guy who could do multiple things in a lebron and magic type of way is more valuable to you the way the league is running. So the Sun's messed up one taking Ayton vlade devis mister Euro messed up by taking Marvin Bagley out of Duke. Then the Atlanta Hawks halfway got it right because they took Luca for Dallas,

who was at five at three. But they traded because they wanted trade up because their GM had come from Golden State and thought, okay, hey, look you know what this guy that's kind of a Steph Curry. We'll get Dallas is number one, so we're gonna get two lottery picks B by giving them Luca Dodge, which they ended up getting. They took Cam Radish and uh. I just look at those three teams and said, man, why all three of you all messed up big time? Because to me and this is not this is I said it.

So this wasn't no hindsight me to it. I said at the time, you take Luca Dodgs because he's nineteen years old, MVP in the second best league in the world, and these guys over in Europe playing against grown men. He got there sixteen. This he's put in more time than any guy who's playing college. And he's put in more time. This guy is a stone cold killer. And that's what you're about. The man. This dude hard out

to win. Man, he hates lose. Yeah, guy, you got to have on your score now now, Alan Sam was talking about his game. Do you hate to lose? That's what That's what I loved it, would ask him, I had, you know, do you hate to lose? Like we know Michael Parsons hates to lose. You can see it, Mike, Michael, he hates to lose. Give me some more, Give me some more. Dogs like Mica Parsons Dan Queenn could do something with some guys like that, because you got some

guys that old. You know, if they lose, but they ball out here, we're good. You know, we're good. But then you got Barry I didn't getting a pick six and we lose. We lose the game. Like I'm gonna tell you something. We're getting out to watch that field. I know I'm not gonna be on gear vision, all right, and you better show in you ain't you ain't messed up in the game. I'm straight gonna be. I got number of positive you're gonna be the stars goalie out there. I get my part bad rest of you, rest of

you didn't. I stopped sixty shots. Sometimes you do do your part door. I'm not. You know, I gonna get down in the dumps out y'all side that's going sixty five points.
