¶ Pathway to Resilience and Growth
Once you see what you actually are , that you're an infinite , limitless being , you'll see that nothing exists outside of you . I'm your host , derek Grant , and this is the Pathway to your Results Podcast . Ladies and gentlemen , welcome to the Pathway to Results podcast , presented by DG Mindset . It is your boy , dg Welcome .
This podcast episode is presented for those people out there who are just I don't know what the word is . You're worried if you can finish the job Not finish , I wouldn't say finish , but if you can keep going . You wonder if you can push on . You're worried if , like , what do I do ? It's so hard .
This is for you , and I don't want this to be motivation . I want this to be inspiration . I'm going to use this example for my children's lives . Children are really cool . Children are cool because of how resilient they are unintentionally , which means that we're actually built with resilience inside of us . Okay , we're built with resilience inside of us .
We already came in code A good God , I don't mind this coming in already . I didn't think we were going to get started this early , but it's already in you . You already got in it . And then something that I have to develop . I just have to learn how to use it . You see what I'm saying . You came with it already .
You already have this muscle of resilience inside of you . We just lose it . It gets atrophied because we don't get taught how to use it . So my other day I go let's start with my son . Right , my son's playing basketball . He's playing up . He's in fifth grade playing against sixth graders . That's physically .
I mean , he's playing against kids who are closer to being men and sexually reproducing than he is . Like he's a boy , he didn't hit puberty , there's not a hair underneath his arm . He's playing against these grown men who got goatees .
I'm like , dang , maybe I need to go out here and suit up so I can play on his team , because this isn't he's outmatched right now .
But he felt scared , he felt anxiety , he felt worried that he was going to have to play against these kids that were bigger and stronger and faster , and he was really stressed out about it in the best way that an 11-year-old could be . So I told him , I said , hey , buddy , look , number one . Okay , what a glorious opportunity this is for you .
What an unbelievable opportunity . So what am I doing right now ? I'm shifting his perspective right now . What an unbelievable opportunity . This is what am I doing right now ? I'm shifting his perspective right now . What an unbelievable opportunity this is for you right now . And he looks at me . He's like what ?
And I purposely say things like this to him because right now he's in the mode . Right now he don't want to hear nothing . I'm saying so I'll say something , something the shock value would be . So he'll look up at me like what ? How is this a great opportunity ? Because we know that anytime something's uncomfortable , the opportunity to grow has just been presented .
Do we see , I have the opportunity to grow now , when it's hard , when it's challenging , do we see how this works ? So now , here's what ends up happening . I tell my son , I say , hey , look , let's just focus now on the process . Let's just focus on the process right now . Who cares about what the result is ? Who cares about what comes ?
Who cares if you play well and you don't do it ? Let's focus on the process . And he goes what is that ? I said the process of moving forward . This is our goal now . We're just going to focus on moving forward . We're not going to focus on anything else . So what does moving forward look like for you ? He's like I don't know doing what . It's hard .
I said okay , now we're talking . Okay , so what's hard for you getting out there and like , like someone , what if someone's guarding me full court ? Okay , I hope that somebody guards you full court . Then I hope somebody gets right up in your face and they have to guard you all the way up and you have to bring the ball up by yourself . He's like why ?
I said , because through that process an illumination will take place . I'm going to pause it right there . Now let's move over to my daughter School's out . They got to go to a summer camp . Well , they don't have to go , but my son wants to go . He's a socialite , he likes to be out and see people and , granted , everyone loves him at the camp .
So I'm sure that probably feels good to him . But my daughter's more like me . She's like I don't need to talk to people , I just want to sit back and I just want to . That's her . So we're like no , you got to go . And here's why you have to go , because it's uncomfortable for you , it's challenging for you .
That's why it's not about the camp , you can stay home all day with mom . It's about doing what's uncomfortable . So the night before she was crying , before she went to bed I said okay . I said how about this ?
We're going to focus on the fact that you're going to get better , you're going to grow , you're going to evolve , but first what takes place is the stinging . And know that the stinging only takes place within your own mind . She's nine years old . She can understand this . She's been hearing it long enough .
So the next morning and I told her and here's the thing with my nine-year-old . I told my nine-year-old , probably about two , three months ago , I'm starting to teach her about how to be accountable for her emotions , her perceptions and her thoughts , right ? So she thinks life is just happening . I'm like no , no , no , you are doing this .
We're not going to sit here and say like , oh , there's no , no , you are the one who is creating this right now . It is you . It is you through your perspective . So I had to break down what perspective was , and we didn't . You know that glass half empty , that full exercise , and she got it .
So I said please understand that this fear that you're experiencing right now doesn't actually exist outside of your own mind . This is something that you are creating , right . So she goes off to camp . I get home from being at the office . I get home that night and she's there and she has this huge smile on her face . Okay , good God , almighty , huge smile .
Right , it could light up a room . She comes up and gives me a hug . We're going to put that on the shelf . Take this situation , right . We put my son on the shelf . We put my daughter on the shelf . Now let me get to business with you right now .
Okay , one thing we need to understand and here I'm going to come back to the son , I'm going to come back to the daughter but one thing we have to understand is that matter is the physical manifestation of mind . Matter is the physical manifestation of mind , meaning what mind thinks will be created in matter . It's not mind over matter , it's mind is matter .
Matter is mind . Give me proof , dg . What are you talking
¶ Mind Over Matter
about ? You right now are probably listening to this from Steve Jobs' imagination . If you're listening to an iPhone , if you're watching on an iPhone , if you're on a computer , this was somebody's imagination at one point . It was someone's mind that has physically manifested itself into matter .
So I'm looking at a house , I'm looking at a trash can , I'm looking at a basketball hoop , I'm looking at a computer , I'm looking at my physical body and it's the manifestation of thinking . Do we see how this works ? This is why the ancients you look at the Kybalion right . The Kybalion , the Hermetic laws what was the first one right ?
The universe is mental , right , mentalism , that consciousness is the indispensable condition of existence . Matter itself is merely a mode of consciousness . Matter itself is merely a mode of consciousness . Matter itself , meaning your life that you are looking at , is nothing more than your mind , turned inside out and put out here in the world .
So everything I can look at your house , I look at the way you drive , I can look at what you drive , I can look at the condition of your body and tell by the way you think , because that's all it was .
You see , everything that we see in the physical world , everything that we experienced in the physical world , was nothing more than a reflection of our inner world . So we forget that because we are projecting creatures , right ? We forget that because we're projecting creatures . So we'll look at life and say , man , life sucks and this happened .
And now we got the process backwards . You let physical reality dictate how you think instead of thinking . So physical reality would reflect it . I've been saying the same thing here for the past couple weeks here on this podcast . I know y'all are getting it now . So here's what we got to understand , though it's only going to be whatever you say .
It is However your mind is . However you see it , that's what you're going to end up seeing , that's what you experience , and here's the beauty of it . It's law . It ain't got no choice . So what's the issue ? The issue is that you think mind is over matter instead of mind is matter .
So now , because you think mind is over matter , you ignore mind and only focus on matter . We always only focus on the result . We don't ever focus on the cause . Never do we ever . Somebody showed me we all want the money , but we don't know that the money was just the effect of a cause . You never take time to think about what the cause was .
We don't focus on cause . Mind is matter . Matter is mind as above , so below , so below as above . So now , when we understand this , here's where the game changes . I just have to . I just have to choose what I want matter to reflect . Okay , so here's what ended up happening with my son . There was a learning curve .
Good , god , almighty , there was a learning curve . You know he's playing point guard . He's been a shooting guard his whole life . I say his whole life . He's only been playing basketball a couple years but now he has to do something that's uncomfortable and he thought life was reflecting it . Sorry , he thought it was hard .
But then he , he , he ended up going to like some little like clinic and the clinic he was playing in it was fourth , fifth and sixth graders , so he was playing against kids . That was younger . He was out here doing stuff . I'm like dang , I ain't never seen you do that before . I said how come you don't do that against sixth graders ?
He said I don't know . I said the only difference between a sixth grader and a fourth grader is the perspective that you have around them . But both of them there ain't no difference . One may be a little bit bigger , a little bit stronger , but that don't mean nothing . Remember , that was just a reflection of how you looked at it .
You have given yourself permission , when you look at someone younger than you , to say , oh , I can go out here and do this , do this , do this . And it clicked , the light bulb went off and he said to me we played a sixth grade team the following day . He said I can't wait to play against these sixth graders . He was out there doing stuff .
I'm sitting here and I sit on the bench . I'm coaching . I look over at Carly and she's looking at me like who is this ? What is going on ? So then , after the game , I told her . I said here's what ended up happening . He consciously chose where he wanted to put his mind , so matter had no choice but to show it .
So we saw it in the form of his play . Right , but he was able to change the way his mind was so he could experience matter in the way that he wanted , and he felt so empowered he's like man , I can't wait , I can't wait to play point guard again . I can't . Wow . Isn't that funny how life works .
Isn't that funny how life works when we go through something difficult and we make it through , huh , what ends up happening ? Let's put that on the shelf . Let's go over to little Miss Sunshine over here . I told you I came home from work and she was at the camp . She came home , she came running up to me with a big smile on her face .
I said how'd the camp go ? She said it was great . You know what her biggest fear was ? Her biggest fear was when she was at this camp . She wouldn't have anybody to eat with , she wouldn't have anybody to talk to , because it was mostly boys at the camp and her big brother wasn't going to be there .
I said no , he better , your big brother , better not just leave you off by himself . And he knew he wasn't going to . But this was all fears that she created in her mind . And here's what happened . Ready , she came home with a smile on her face she's like I did it . I said did anybody eat with you at lunch ? She goes no , nobody did .
Really , she's like , but I was okay . I said of course you were . You always will be . You see , everything is inside of your own mind . It's your own thoughts , it's your own perspective . It's not anything else . And we never worry about , we never fear what is happening in the moment . Y'all stay with me , stay with me here , stay with me .
You ain't never had a fear of nothing in the moment . You see , fear can exist in the present moment . Fear is a future-based thought . So fear will keep you stuck . Fear will keep you from moving forward . Fear will keep you from really doing what you need to do when you know you need to do it to heal these wounds .
Fear is going to keep you stuck , because fear can only exist off of future-based thinking . But when you get to the wound , when you get to the hard part , when you get to the struggle , when you actually get there , fear is out the window . You need to remind yourself about that on the beginning of the journey . So I told her . I said hey , you did it .
She said , yeah , so I can't wait to go again . I said good God , here we go . So what is the point of this podcast ? I'm just using my children as an example . When you do what's hard , when you do what's challenging , here's what's going to end up happening . There's going to be an initiation process .
There's going to be a purification , there's going to be a development . There's going to be a growth period . There's going to be a learning curve . That happens .
But if you tell yourself that this is a part of it , good God , almighty , everybody wanted to eat a slice of pizza , but people don't realize that there was raw ingredients that went on in there and before those raw ingredients were in a place that they could be eaten , there had to be heat , there had to be pressure , there had to be flames , there had to be
fire . This is how we cooked it . The same goes forth for you and I . We got this raw potential , we got these raw capabilities . We can do anything . But do we not know that we have to go through the oven of life sometimes ? And when you go through the oven of life , the oven of life isn't trying to hurt you .
The oven of life is just trying to make you well done . It's trying to get that cheese bubbling inside of you . It's trying to get that cake to be a masterpiece With all of these ingredients that have been adding up over your life .
All of the situations , all of the trauma , all of the abandonment , all of the abuse , all of the neglect all of these things have been adding up . They were ingredients inside of your cake .
And then here's what ends up happening when you make the choice yourself to say I'm consciously going to do what's difficult , I'm going to show up for myself for this one time and I'm going to see what I can make of it . I'm going to see who comes out on the other side . You'll see that cake ended up being delicious .
That pizza ended up being pretty doggone good , ended up being pretty doggone . Good , and it was you . So I told my daughter , I said , look , because you're the youngest , you're nine , right , you get babied . We're not going to baby you , we're not done babying you . It's stunting your development , stunting your growth .
I got to start teaching you how to be accountable . Truly right , my son's this big , big , huge kid , right Athlete . So we , truly right , my son's this big , big , huge kid , right athlete . So we'd just , we'd be treating him like he's 14 years old , he's 11 . My daughter's on the other end , she's on the complete opposite end .
But I said , whoa , as a parent , I'm sitting , told carly . I said , hey , we gotta tighten up here . We gotta tighten up . We're like , oh it's , you know , if I look at my daughter , she'll start crying . It's like we gotta hold a standard of accountability so she can have a standard for herself one day . We just say , oh well , you know it's difficult .
Yeah , no , you don't have to go to camp . No , you gotta go to camp . It's not even about camp , it's about you doing what's challenging for you in your life . Let's first become aware of why it's hard . Let's write it down . I had to write down why . Why she was scared . Become aware of what you're scared of .
So then that way , when you do move towards it , you can see how much of it was a lie that you had been telling yourself . So you have fears of starting that business . You have fears of , you know , going after that job or putting your name in for that promotion . You have fears ? Sure you do . Write them down . Write them down .
You have fears of going up to the next level . Write them down . You have fear of success . Write it down . Now we have an awareness . Now let's figure out why , why , what are you afraid of ? Why Just keep asking ? Why ? You really want to know . You chat GPT . You chat GPT 4.0 . I want to know why you just keep asking yourself questions .
And here's what's going to end up happening . You're going to get the answers . You're going to get the answers and you'll see that the answers that come to you , you somehow knew you could always get these answers . You somehow knew that this was always a potential , that's because it was already inside of you . Because it was already inside of you .
So when you feel like life is hard , when you feel like it's like , damn , I don't know how I can do this , man , this is going to be challenging . It's hard . Don't deny that . It will be . You're right , it will be . It will be challenging . For now , at this point in time , I'm over here trying to do some things within business .
I'm like man , this is man . This is hard . Hey , it is . At this point in time . I bet you this , I guarantee you this . Come back and check with me in a year . I bet you it won't be
¶ Embrace the Process, Achieve Success
hard . Then I'll never forget when I got into Globetrotters , right , when I got with the Harlem Globetrotters , they're like yeah , you got to really work on your ball handling , be able to do all these tricks . I'm like man , how am I going to do this ? How am I going to do this ? I would go in the hotel room .
I'd spin the ball trying to spin out , breaking Lamb's ball , bounce off my hand and bounce off the mirrors . I was tearing these hotel rooms up . Man , I'm like man . But here's what I told myself . I'm like I got to figure this out . I got to figure this out . I know I can do this , but I just got to spend more time . I got to be more focused .
I got to put the work in the energy . I got to put the energy into it Eventually , when I meet enough the requirements for the energy , the energy will start to come back . And then , finally , I got it and I'll never forget . I was in my third year . It clicked . It took me three years .
It took me three years of incessantly working every day , just chopping wood and carrying water , doing the things that's boring , over and over and over again , because I wasn't really focused on the destination at that point . At that point I had fallen in love with the process , because I knew the process was going to heal the product .
But the product was never going to come if I never focused on the process . So I just told myself every day , 25 minutes a day , I'm just going to work on it . 25 minutes a day , I'm just going to work on it .
And when I worked on it for those 25 minutes a day , I gave it all of the attention that was needed , because we know wherever our attention goes , that's where energy flows and wherever energy is flowing , that's what's being created . And here's the last part I was giving enough energy , as being the version of me that already knew how to do this .
So I just kept working at it , kept working at it , kept working at it . By my third year it clicked . I was like man , I know how to do this , now I can do it . And it was game over after that . That's really when my career took off , started doing national TV commercials , national TV spots , good Morning America , the Today Show .
Are you smarter than a fifth grader ? No , I was not smarter than a fifth grader . If you wonder so , don't even ask , don't even go Google it . I was not smarter than a fifth grader .
But my point of this was how uncomfortable it was for me to go through this , and I can tell you probably 50 other times in my life of how uncomfortable it was to go through this . But here's what I've learned and I'm only 41 right now . I still got some time left to make it do what it do .
But in my 41 years of this existence I've learned that every time something was uncomfortable , every time that something was hard and I focused on hunkering down and really just focusing on now and focusing on the process , I always got to the destination , I always got to the end result and it didn't matter anymore .
It didn't matter because it was never about that . Remember what I told you on the last episode it's not about the physical thing , it's about the version of you that had to become that to resonate , to manifest , to bring that physical thing into this three-dimensional reality . So what does it start with ? You can try and manipulate matter .
All it's going to do is drive your mind crazy . I can manipulate my mind and matter will correspond to it . So for you , on this journey , you may be going through something that's really quote-unquote difficult . And I say quote-unquote difficult because we know that everything is relative .
It's difficult based on where you are , at the level of awareness that you're at right now . But know that every time something's difficult , it's because you're going through an upgrade . It's hard right now , it's challenging right now because you're looking up at it . But the only reason why you're looking up at it ?
Because that thing's trying to pull you up to this next frequency , this next level , and this is why . This is why . So , when we go into something that's hard , when we go into something that's difficult , we show up every day and say I'm going to give it what I got . I'm going to give it all that I got today . That's all I'm going to do .
I'm going to give it all that I got . I ain't going to worry about tomorrow , I'm not worried about in 10 years . I know where I want to go in 10 years , but I'm focusing only on right now .
But I'm only going to focus on right now and today because I know if I can win today , I'll have momentum going into tomorrow and if tomorrow comes I'll do the same , and if the next day comes I'll do the same . And then here's what's going to end up happening .
You're going to start to notice that there's going to be a transformation , there's going to be a shift , there's going to be an alchemical process that's going to take place , and you will look back on all of those nows that add up to what we would call months ago , weeks ago , years ago , and you will notice I'm not the same person , and the universe will
bless you with the opportunity to put you in a situation so you can see how much you've changed .
¶ Personal Growth Through Mind Expansion
I never forget when I was doing motion capture , acting with EA Sports , the video game electronic arts , and they would have me go up to Vancouver and they had me do it like I don't know if you got it . The first time I went , it was like a couple weeks after I had been let go of the Globetrotters .
I was out of training business , I was trying to get off the ground . I mean I wasn't making enough money . I mean I wasn't making enough money . I mean I was quite honest , I was in a bad place financially . I'll never forget they had us going to this hotel and this hotel that we were staying in Vancouver anybody been to Vancouver ?
Vancouver is already air quotes relatively expensive , right . But we go up to Vancouver and I'm up there with former NBA guys this is who they use for acting for this video game , for NBA Live . But they used me because I was really good at doing impersonations . They had found me on YouTube , right . So we go up to this hotel and I never forget .
I never forget . I check into the hotel and they're like , yeah , you need to put down a credit card for incidentals . I'm like , oh well , I don't bring any . They're like , oh , you can use a debit card and I forgot how much they were going to take out . It's a debit . They got to take out more than what it actually is , but I couldn't do it .
I wasn't in a place financially at that point where I could do that for the amount that they were going to take . It was a really nice hotel and I remember how I felt like man Fast forward . A year later I'm still doing motion motion capture , acting , and I had to do it like maybe two or three times a year .
I would travel out to Vancouver , but they had me go back like a year later and I went back to that same hotel and I had to put down a card for incidentals and now it was no problem because the training business had gotten off the ground . So what am I saying this ? It only took 365 days . It didn't take long , relatively speaking .
There had been a change . There had been growth and evolution . I'm just using money as a way to quantify it . But it wasn't even about the money , it was about the version of me . It was about the version of me who , a year before , where he was , versus now , a year later .
So the universe gave me an opportunity for me to go back so we could say look at how much you've grown , mother , look at you now . You remember how you felt when you were here a year ago , when you were standing at this front counter . Now , look at where you're at , you see how this works . So it doesn't have to be anything around money .
You may go into an old neighborhood . You may go into an old . You may see an old person . Go to a family reunion or go to a high school reunion . You go to a high school reunion . I've never been to a high school reunion , but I would love to go back . I probably should go back . Go to a high school reunion .
You're going to look at all these people and you're going to see how much you have grown and you evolved . All I'm telling you in this episode was give yourself permission to expand that mind , because mind was matter . We want the material world to expand , but we don't ever take time to put it into the mental world . Your mind was matter .
So when you sit here and look at your house , your clothes , your car , your neighborhood , understand what . You're looking at you like a , like a peeping Tom . You're looking at everybody's imagination in physical form . Look at you . You're over here staring at this house . Wow , I love this house . Maybe you're over here looking at that architect's mind like that .
You're staring into his mind . Do you not know ? Do we see how this works ? Do we see Everything was everybody's imagination in physical form that we could experience . I'm just here to tell you this . The mind had no boundaries , the mind had no limits . And if the mind had no limits and it had no boundaries , guess what Matter did not either .
¶ Developing Mental Strength Through Physical Challenges
Give yourself permission To turn matter into mind . Give yourself permission to expand the mind . Give yourself permission to keep going , to keep pushing when it gets hard . Don't stop when it gets heavy . Don't stop when I work out and it gets hard . If I got to do 12 reps and it's hard on 11 , I'm doing 13 . Why am I doing 13 ?
That 13 ain't going to do nothing . That one ain't going to do nothing . It ain't going to do nothing for me physically , but you know what it's going to do . It's going to do something for me mentally . So now I'm exercising my willpower . I mean I'm doing what's really challenging , I'm doing what's really hard .
So now that's the same energy that I'm going to use to create my reality . So when life gets to life and it feels like oh my gosh , what am I going to do , I may lose perspective that life's just trying to upgrade me to the next level . I'm going to fall back to the level of my training with my willpower mentally to push through this .
So it's just another way for you to use physical reality to help you strengthen your mind . I'm just using . That's why I go for runs . I ain't got no business out here running , but I go and run , I go run . I go run six , seven , eight miles and ain't eating for 24 hours . Why am I doing it ? I'm just doing it to see if I can do what's challenging .
I'll go climb a mountain , I go sit out in a cave . I'm doing this stuff because I'm just trying to develop the thing that is going to develop things , the thing that's going to develop things . Develop that thing . Do not run away from it when it gets hard . Remember , it's just trying to help you . Life's just trying to help you to grow .
It's just trying to help you to evolve . It's just trying to help you to step in this divine path , this divine wisdom , power and grace that you actually are . So keep going , keep going , and I wish you nothing but the best and the pathway to your results .
