Episode description

J.I the Prince of N.Y, also known simply as J.I, is a Brooklyn-born rapper of Puerto Rican descent who gained fame with his 2019 breakout single "Need Me." Raised in Crown Heights, he was influenced by old-school hip hop and reggaeton, crafting rudimentary beats on a miniature keyboard as a child. His journey into music began in middle school, inspired by New York City rap legends like Biggie and Nas. J.I’s appearance on the second season of The Rap Game in 2016 helped him build a following, leading to the release of his debut single "No Static" and a three-track EP, Barely Famous. After a period of lost motivation, he bounced back with the mixtape Hood Life Krisis, Vol. 1, featuring the hit "Need Me," which earned him a deal with Interscope Records. His subsequent releases and collaborations with artists like Lil Tjay and Myke Towers showcase his versatility and lyrical prowess. His latest track, "New York (Freestyle)," highlights his raw, unapologetic style and love for his hometown, with clever wordplay and a gritty beat.
