This is the OTP presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans. Don't get sacked by the high cost of healthcare. Make Farm Bureau Health Plans your first line of protection. They've been protecting Tennesseeans since nineteen forty seven. With Aby Wells. I'm Mike Keith, welcoming you to this edition of the program, which we are recording on Friday afternoon, July the seventeenth. There may be things that happen after we are done, Amy Wells, that we are unaware of, but we are
going and we are going strong. How are you, hello, Mike. I'm so good. I think it's important that you established the date today because it feels like there's more news every second. But we had to get OTP in this week felt important. So we're picking a time and we're going with it. We're going with it. We're making a plan, we're executing the plan, and that plan is to talk about Derek Henry's contract. Were you surprised when the news
came down? Absolutely, I was very surprised. I was holding out hope for a very long time that a contract would get done, and then Adam Schefter reported what was it? Forty eight hours thirty six hours before the deadline that the team was not going to get something done. And I believe Adam Schefter, I mean, he seems to be pretty plugged in. So that was kind of the assumption that I was operating under. We'll still have Derek Henry
Hill still have the tag. Like it doesn't change that much, but you know, you like to see a guy get a deal, and then it all kind of happened at the end and it was very exciting. I'm happy for him. I think that he's a guy who I mean, he works so hard and he plays hard, and that's what you want to see. And John Robinson continues to reward
guys who perform, and so I'm happy for him. Let me say something about the Adam Schefters story, because people, you know, it seems like delight when the national guys are quote unquote wrong. I believe when he reported that he was not wrong, I get that. I think at that moment, I don't think there was any movement on it. I didn't think any I don't think anybody thought there was going to be any movement on it, and then it happened. Sometimes stories like that change and the circumstances
changed dramatically, and I think that's what happened. I think everybody got very not that they hadn't stayed in contact all along, but I think everybody got busy at the last minute and made it happen, made this deal happen, And so I was surprised. Of course, I had the misfortune. So this is the period of time where all of us who work in the NFL are normally off and we're we're either on vacation or we're just working a
little bit. It's a it's a calm time. So this is the period of the year that all of us go to the dentist, go get our annual physicals, go see the eye doctor. Anything that you've got to do, you've got to get it in now. And that's what we all, almost all of us at least normally do. So I went to the eye doctor and at one o'clock I had my eyes dilated. Do you know where this is going? Okay, So, in less than two hours after my eyes have been dilated, the Henry story hits.
So my phone goes off like over and over and over again, and people are texting and all this stuff. Well, I look at my phone, I can't read it because my eyes are dilated, and so all I can make out is I can make out Dereck Henry contract, and I'm like, did the did the deadline pass? Did he sign a contract? What's happened? So I had to call somebody and ask him, and dialing the phone was even a trick. So, yes, I was surprised, and h it was hard to It was hard to get that information.
This is the only happens to you, nobody else. That's not true, but I mean, that's the that's the type of stuff. It just seems like that if something like that is going to happen, it happens on the one day you go to the eye doctor, you know, and when I go to the dentist next week, there's no telling what's going to happen. That's probably when the clowney thing is. Yeah, probably, I'll tell you what it's. You
try not to plan anything, especially during football season. You try to keep yourself wide open because anything is possible. But there are some things in life you've just got to do. You've got to go to the eye doctor, you got to clean your teeth. There are some things that just have to happen, and sure enough. No matter what you plan, something will drop at the exact moment, Well that's it. But if you don't, but you try to do it in the spaces where you think you're
the clearest. It's like, if if we plan to do something in season, I'm going to generally try to do it on Thursday morning because that is the least likely time of an NFL week that news is going to be made because Monday's Monday. I mean, anything can happen, the coaches press conference is there, Tuesday's the player's day off, but that's also when people sign folks, or waiver claims are made, or you know, if you're going to make a big change in the lineup, that story starts to
leak out. Wednesday's the first day of the practice week and usually the most busy day, the most busy day because you're finding out about the injuries. And then Thursday morning before practice, that's generally your safe space. So if you've got to meet with a teacher at school because one of your kids is in trouble, or you know, something like that, that's generally when you try to do it, and it just never fails that you can't plan anything
this life we've chosen to lead. I'm so happy about Derek Henry though, and I think I'm so happy based on the reaction in the locker room. Though you've been around this team now this is your eight for you. Can you ever remember a player in your time with the Titans who was more more respected? There have been some who probably match it, but have you ever known a player who was more respected in the locker room than Derrick Henry? I don't think so. And he's a
quiet man. Derrick Henry is a man of few words, and honestly, if you just see him on the street, you don't get a lot of facial reaction. A lot of times, he's just kind of a chill fella. He just kind of hangs out. But guys see him work. Guys see the way that he behaves on the field and the intensity that he plays with, and they respect that. And I think that for someone who's not as outspoken and gregarious, I guess as like a Taylor Milan or even a Kevin Byard or something like that, a guy
who's real just quiet and grinds. To see the team also rally around someone like that and be so excited for him I think that that says a lot about this organization as a whole, and this team and the fact that they respect hard work and production and consistency, and that's the kind of team you want to be a part of. I agree. And the respect factor, I think Steve McNair probably had more, But I don't think there's anybody compares to Steve McNair, and I don't know
that there ever will be. The overall love and respect that teammates had for him was otherworldly. But Derrick Henry is close, and you know, it's funny because they're similar personalities that you know, Steve never said anything, Steve never complained Steve I mean, and that's why Derek is. Derek is that figure that those guys just respect so much. And when they see his crazy workout videos, they act
like they've just seen a superhero too. You know, it's hard to impress an NFL player, right because they're world class athletes. They're all world class athletes, and yet they see him and gop dude, well, some of the things he's doing are legit crazy, I know, right, Yeah, it's nuts. His Instagram. If you only follow one person on Instagram, it should be Derrick Henry just to see his offseason workouts.
They're bananas. Yeah, well, that's why when he went back to college and wasn't here for part of the off season after his rookie year, the staff wasn't terribly worried about it because they knew he was going to be doing the work and he wanted to finish his degree. Now, you know, you can debate whether or not that's the time to do it. A lot of times they would prefer you do it after your third year or your fourth year because you're still learning the system. But that's
what he did. He wanted to finish. That was important to him, and they were like, Okay, we would rather you be here probably, but we know you're working. Because he's nuts when it comes to the whole workout program. And I mean that in the best way. I'm not saying he's doing anything dangerous or whatever. I'm just saying he is. The better word is he's committed. He's super committed to doing things to make himself better. Committed. It's
a good word because insane has a negative connotation. I suppose, well, no, but I think people who are listening to the OTP presented by far bureau health plans. I think they know what we mean. I mean, I think they get that and they but I mean, listen, if you're a fan of the team, you love that about one of your main dudes, right, Oh yeah, absolutely. And the things that have been playing on a loop, the highlights that we've been seeing in the last couple of days after he
has signed his contract. The stiff arms, the crazy runs, the just mauling of people. It's so good. And that's that's what he's training for in the offseason. And you know what I'm you know what I'm most excited about. I'm most excited about seeing him and Darnton Evans together because I think that combo. I think it's gonna be really exciting. I don't want to overhype this kid, but I just I love that the Titans got a guy who and Henry doesn't play third down a lot unless
it's third and short. He's coming out of the game. So the Titans had to get a back who could do some other things. And the fact that you've got this guy, this big monster, two hundred and fifty pound monster, and then you're gonna come with the faster guy who's two hundred and ten pounds roughly, who's got a few other things? I mean as a one two punch. I can't wait to see how Arthur Smith is going to choose to use it. I love the drafting of Evans No Seek, and have gone on and on about it.
But the reason that I love it is I love the combo and the fact that they're going to keep this combo together for a period of time I think will give Arthur Smith the comfort level to figure out how to use them both together well. And I think that that is what this offense has been attempting to do for a couple years in that backfield is put together some players who can do different things, and so we've seen some pieces moved through there as a compliment
to Derrick Henry. We might have actually found the piece finally in Darrnton Evans, who can be there be a solid weapon on his own that is different from Derek and have both of them together. If that makes sense, It makes total sense. The Dion Lewis thing was a
good idea. And the reason the Dion Lewis thing didn't work in twenty eighteen was because Henry didn't play well for two months and d and they had to make Dion Lewis the starter, right, And it would have been interesting to see if Henry had played well from the start and Lewis would have been the backup all year, how that would have gone together. And then last year Lewis was not as effective as he was in twenty eighteen because Lewis was a changeup, I mean, and I
hope he plays well for the judges. He's a pro, he's a good guy. He's a changeup. The Titans had to make him the main guy early in twenty eighteen because Derek Henry wouldn't playing well. And it's one of the things that I admire so much about Derek is I mean, the revisionist history of all of the Dion Lewis stuff. It's like, well, he never played well for the Tits, Like, no, that's not true. He was not
ever able to be used in that. He didn't play that well in twenty nine, that's true, but he was not able to be used in twenty eighteen. How they hoped to use him because twenty two, I mean, we had the Monday night game in Dallas, and after that Monday night game in Dallas, they put David Flewellen in at running back to give him reps, trying to figure out if they could get something else because they weren't getting it from Henry, and Derek just kept battling, he
kept working, he kept practicing. He got It's one of the great stories that I've seen with the Titans is this guy who fought his way with hard work to become what he has become. Because I mean, if you'd have told anybody on that what was it, November fifth, twenty eighteen where he played Monday night football in Dallas, that he was going to get this contract, they wouldn't
have believed it at that point. But his hard work and his commitment to improvement has put him here and has made him one of the stars of the league. And it's one of the reasons I'm such a fan of Derrick Henry well In that twenty eighteen year was the year that he took his film to Eddie George and they sat down and went through it. And that's one of my favorite friendships in all of the National Football League is Derrick Henry and Eddie George, because I
think there are so many similarities between the two. They're both these larger than life individuals just physically and kind of have similar interests in the entertainment industry and all that. I love their little friendship. It makes me so happy. So the fact that Derek was able to have the production that he was able to have after sitting down with someone great like Eddie George who is able to say, listen, this is what you need to start doing. And it worked.
I mean along with the practice and the reps and everything else that goes into it, but having the insight from someone like Eddie and then he was able to perform the way that he was in that last chunk of the season. I mean, that's pretty incredible. And the friendship lives on. But you know what, Amy, a lot of stars don't handle slumps, right. They never a lot of stars when they go into a slump, they never come out of him. And here here's a guy. He
sets the high school record for rushing. He goes to Alabama, he has to wait his turn, He wins Eisman Trophy. He comes in, he plays really well as a rookie for the Titans. His second year, he does such a nice job that they say, okay, we're going to let DeMarco Murray go because it's your team. They bring in Dion Lewis to be his backup, and then I mean, he can't find daylight and suddenly he's in a slump. And yet, and yet he chose to go to Eddie George.
He chose to run with the scout team. You don't have to run with the scout team. And he chose to run with the scout team because he was trying to get his angles right and how he needed to do it. And he brought himself out of a slump and went to a new level. That's a that's a great sports story, but that's a great personal story too, because a lot of human beings don't have that about them in order to go to that next level. Yeah, and he's an impressive guy. He really is an impressive guy.
But I'm interested. There are three things on offense I'm really interested to see. I think Adam Humphries is gonna be a bigger factor in this offense because I think he's gonna be healthy and he's gonna be the slot machine that they that they signed him for. I think John H. Smith's gonna do more because I think John who has a lot of capability. And then I like this combo at tailback because I think they're gonna get more out of the combo than what they got a
year ago. And again I'm not I don't mean to demean Dion Lewis, but he just wasn't productive. You know. That's the fact. I think if every thing else stays the same relatively, and you get more out of those three areas, I think the offense can go to an
even different level, which is really exciting. Having the consistency with Ryan Tannehill is the piece of that puzzle that makes all of this a little bit sweeter because it's a redemption story for him too, So having him kind of as the leader of this group of weapons who we've seen flashes of, but now we get to see all together kind of in the main roles. It's gonna
be an exciting season. Well, the Tannehill thing. And everybody's talking about the one seventeen passer rating and nine point six per attempt, and I mean his numbers were phenomenal. I don't think Ryan's numbers have to be phenomenal for him to run an offense or as phenomenal those numbers. Those numbers may go down a little bit that's okay. I mean, he's the basketball player that was shooting out
of his mind last year. You know, Okay, if his percentages go down a little bit, Listen, the Titans can still win if he has a one hundred passer raid. You know, if he if he throws a couple more interceptions, that's okay. As long as he's efficient in what he does with everything else, they can they can be a playoff team and can be a contender to do something even greater. He doesn't have to be, you know, that
bigger show. And I don't think Derek Henry has to lead the league in rushing for the Titans to be an effective offense because I think they have more things they can take advantage of, and by sort of spreading that out, they you know, the the some of the parts can make the whole even more exciting, which is what I'm fired up about. Can I ask a quick question about your use of the friend a slot machine? Yes?
Is that's something that lots of people say or was that a Mike Keith ism that we can No, No, that's been said. That's that's been said. It was good. I really liked it. I wanted to give you no, it's not mine. I mean, there's nothing that I do that's original. You know that everything is stolen. Um story of a career. But this is a mean But that's what you really want him to be. You want him to be that Wes Welker, Julian Edelman Um, who's another
great example of that super slot receiver. I mean, lots of guys have done it, right, I think I think Edelman was the one who was referred to as the slot machine. That's what they brought him in to do. I mean, if this offense is working the way that it should and people stay healthy, he probably ought to lead the team in receptions. Humphreys, because you're because now he's not gonna gain fifteen hundred yards receiving because he's gonna catch a lot of short passes and things of
that sort. He was on track. I mean, he only played eleven games. Yeah, he was having a fine season. He was doing just fine. I mean, it's it's not those guys are not always spectacular like a J. Brown, make the spectacular plays like Corey Davis. Those guys keep the chains move. You feed him the ball, they get open, you feed them the ball. Six yard Game seven, yard game, third and five, you get eight yards. The chains move.
I mean, that's what you want humphriests to do, and I think Tannehill will take advantage of that like crazy. I'm excited to see while just while we're talking about wide receivers, and I have a depth chart in front of me, so I'm kind of looking at names and everything. I'm excited to see which one of these receivers because per every offseason, there's always a lot of receivers on
a roster. You need a lot of guys to take training camp reps and you know, you bring a lot of people go through just to see where all these pieces are going to fit. I'm excited to see which one's going to be the surprise receiver. Every year there's a surprise receiver who's very exciting and everyone gets all fired up about. I'm excited to see who it's going to be this year. If that's the stuff I like in training camp, doesn't somebody have to beat Caliph Raymond
out for that role? I mean didn't, I know, but saying what he did at Indianapolis and what he did at Baltimore, and you know those sorts of things. I mean, camp Batson had done it in the preseason, he had put himself. You know, everybody thought, all Cam Batson, I'm talking about the offseason. He had won the Offseason Award, and everybody's all excited about Cam Batson and then he gets hurt. Cody Hollister is the guy that you're saying, how could he be? You know, could he take over
that Taja Sharp role or Rashad Davis? You know, could sweet feet? Could he be the guy who who sort of fills in because he's some returnability as well. I think Evans has a great shot to be the kickoff returner, which almost isn't that big a deal anymore because nobody kicks it. You know, there are no kickoff returns, right the punt the punt returner thing is a big deal to me. Yeah, I'm just excited. I'm excited for all of these battles to start happening. I'm excited to watch
the offensive line. I'm excited to watch some of the receivers in those skill positions on offense kind of shake out and see who's kind of surprising everybody. I'm ready for this. Mike Antsy, I know me too, all right, So we do the otp q's and if you go to Tennessee Titans dot com, slashq is otp Q. Okay, if you if you go to that, then you have the ability to send in questions. And I think we've
got some questions. We do have some questions. Mike, I sounded the alarm and the people responded, And so this first question is from Edward in Port Lavaca, Texas. Yeah. I might not be saying that correctly, but Edwards from Texas, he says a lot can happen between now and week one. But with that being said, are you excited about our current pass rush as it stands right now? I feel pretty good about the pass rush because I think the
Titans are going to get more done. With Simmons and with Beasley and with Korea and with Landry and Roberson and Walker. I think They're in pretty good shape to be improved in that role. I'm hoping they figure out how to get some of that blitz pressure out of
the slot. That's something Logan Ryan did very well. Two things about replacing Logan Ryan that jump out to me that aren't talked about his tackling ability in the run game and his ability to rush the pastor because they like to bring people when they're in the five defensive backpackage. So I'm going to be interested to see who that is and can they get after the quarterback like logan run. You got the whole thing about covering the receiver. That's understood,
but there are bigger parts of that specific job. You got to be physical and your timing has to be excellent. So I think that's part of the past rush equation that maybe doesn't get talked about, is who can blitzwell? And can Jayon Brown blitzwell? Can Rashaun Evans blitzwell? Do they have some people who can get there in the blitz packages and make some things happen. Here's another question while we're talking about defense. Josh from North Manchester, Indiana asks,
will that Davis Clowney? I don't know it's north of Indiana Nchester. Yeah, it's north of Manchester. I don't know it has North in it, so I assume it's up high. Um. The question that Josh asked is will Jenavion Clowney become John Robinson's top priority now that King Henry is fine, matters what he wants. I mean, that's what it comes
down to um. You know, there's there's gonna be some reckoning with the owners and the players as they continue the talks about what they're going to do with lost revenue and how it's going to affect the twenty twenty salary cap and the twenty twenty one salary cap. I think that's probably going to determine if all things are equal, If if we're just going on with life next year and the cap, we know the CAP's gonna go up ten million dollars. I think John Robinson would bid a
little bit. I think he would do more, but I think I think he's waiting right now to see because I mean, their talks about the cap going down this year, there's talking about the kepp going down next year or just staying the same, and I think everybody has cold feet at this moment about that. So I think it's going to come down to what Clowney wants. Listen, we get the whole Clowney thing with the Titans fans, we get it. Amy wants Clowney. I want Clowney. Actually, Farrell
wants clown I mean we all want that. We would like this to happen. Derrick Henry wants Clowney. Taylor wand wants Clowney. I mean, it's it's a big thing. But that's the that's the fan part of it. That's the fan part of it in me going back to remembering when Clowney was the number one high school player in the country. I've been intrigued with with JD. Clowney for ten years, you know, because I've known who he was that long since he was you know, all the way,
all the way going back to high school. But then there's the adult part of it, which is John Robinson. John Robinson's like Dad, you know, you go through the drive through and and you're supposed to order dinner and instead all you want to order as a shake, get the biggest shake that you can possibly get. And Dad's like, no, you have to have dinner before you can have your dessert. Well that's kind of what John Robinson is in this.
He's like, yeah, I get it, but and he gets it and I and I think he wants Clowney too. I think there's no doubt. But what's the number? And those are the things we don't know. I hope that right after we finished taping this podcast, we read that the Titans have agreed to terms with Clowney. That would be swell, but I think it may take a little more time. Well, maybe we'll dilate your eyes to get the juju flowing. Whatever it takes, man, Um, the news is the important news. Is my eyes no worse than
last year? So really good? Hey, congrass Mike, thank you, thank you. That is great news. Um. You do you want to continue to talk about you a little bit. Some of the questions are about you in your life. Well whatever, Well here's one. David from Thompson Station wants to know what are your hobbies or interests away from football. I work in I work in my yard. I'm I'm big into working in the yard, cutting grass, trees, shrubs, all,
you know, just all kinds of basic things. That's the way I kind of get the leaves up, get the walnuts up in my yard when they all fall in the fall. That's you know, that's the truth. You know, you know it is Oh my gosh. Yes, I am very familiar with your love for your yard and those darn walnuts. And I watch thousands of them, and I watch HGTV and I watch every date Line. I'm huge into life crime shows. Which makes a lot of people nervous. I don't know Dateline as a crime show, is it? Well?
I mean it's about thirty eight hours cold Justice. I like all those kinds of shows. I like crime dramas. Mike, it's good that you share. Yeah, it's nice. Yeah. Um do you want more? Yeah, I just have one more. Jeremy from Twitter. This is from Twitter actually, but you can also send questions to Tennessee titens dot com slash o t p Q. Jeremy would like to know what made you want to go into broadcasting in the first place. What you know, It's what I always wanted to do.
I started in second grade and I started doing a class newscast. In second grade. There used to be like a show. So I know you're laughing, but now there used to be a show called Kids Are People Too, and so it it was a thing. It was terribly compelling, and so it got everybody wanting to do like news class newscast. So I started doing it in the second grade and and got interested it's in sports at the exact same time, and so those two things came together
for me at that moment. It's it's literally all I ever wanted to do. I had no I had no backup point. I sold shoes for Jenesco, Johnston and Murphy Um. But that was the only I would probably be selling shoes working in the shoe business, because I'm intrigued. But that was the only other thing that probably would have happened. You have a lot of good shoes too, well, thank you. I'm kind of a kind of sewer of shoes you are. So it's a sing Okay, are we done? Yes, we're done.
The people just like to get to know you, Mike. It's not okay, that's great. So the thing that we need to do those we need to do a whole show of otpqs, and we need to get Coach Mac back in here. Let's do this. Let's put out the call and see if we can't get a bunch of questions, and next week we'll get Coach Mac back on and we'll answer every question we can for Coach Mac. Tell people how to submit their otpques, and we'll do like a mailbag edition. How about that to start. I love
a good mailbag. Kick things off right for the twenty twenty season. Okay, Tennessee Titans dot Com slash otp Q. Al Right, so I got some I got a text during the course of the program, and I mean, this is literally breaking news. Are you ready. I didn't know we were allowed to have our phones when we did this show. Okay, go on. The training camp hats are in at the Titans locker room shop. Oh are they
They are? Yeah? So Aaron at the Titans Locker room shop at Nissan Stadium has said the training camp hats are there. Quick thoughts on the training camp hat, Navy white and Visor. Which of those do you like the best? Oh? Well, I like the Navy when the best the Navy hat. And I like them because I think they're sleek and they're simple, and that is my favorite thing. There's not a lot of flash. It's not like a couple of years ago when everything was like plastic, weirdly and like shiny.
There's none of that. It's just a classic hat that says Titans on it, like it should be. I love them. I think they're great. You know who's gonna be the happiest is Jim Wyatt and Derrick Henry Because anybody who likes a visor, the training camp visor is really sharp. Yeah. I'm not a visor. Guy, I can't wear it. I can't do it. I can't wear a DVisor. I'm a hat guy. I prefer the Navy because of the dirt factor. This is the best looking white training camp hat I've seen.
But my problem is I would get it so dirty so fast. Yeah, white is really hard, especially with like sunscreen and bug spray. And yeah, I get that. I do like it. Okay. So the Titans Locker Room shop at Nissan Stadium is open Wednesday through Saturday ten am to six pm. That's Central time. They're actually open Sunday noon until six pm Central So Wednesday through Saturday ten am to six pm. Sunday noon to six pm Central time. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. And of course
you can you can serve order online. That's another way you're able to order. But we wanted to give people the news that the training camp because we people care about this stuff, and the training camp hats are even going to be more valuable because they are also going to be the September hats who were told, oh I didn't know that. Well, see, I have a little information
here on the OTP for you. Because of the pandemic COVID nineteen and everything being behind, they are not going to switch into the regular season hats until October and you will look yes, so are you still looking this up to make sure you like it? I'm looking at it right now and it occurred to me that this is kind of that I don't know the words for it, but it's kind of like a puffy or fabric. It's got the little square so it's kind of got some puff like last year's. Last year's had some puff. It
felt almost quilted. Love that. So don't get the hats so you know what I'm talking about. If you get it, you'll know immediately like, ah the puff. Yes, I get it, but it's so weird. It's a very comfortable, nice fabric. I'm excited. Yes, Okay, so the hats. The hats are there at the Titans Locker Room shop. They're open until six o'clock Saturday and Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, and then back opened ten until six starting Wednesday. So you can go in there and get him at them. Tell
them you heard about it on the OTP. That would really make us look good. You can also tell our friends at far Bureau Health Plans thank you. For sponsoring the OTPP. Look to the folks at far Bureau Health Plans when you need someone who understands the xs and o's of healthcare coverage. They've been protecting Tennessee and since
nineteen forty seven. And remember, go to Tennessee Titans dot com and submit your question for Dave McGinnis because Coach Wack doesn't know this yet, but we're going to drag him back in to do OTPQ mailbag at the start of what we hope is training camp. The only thing better than having coach mac on the OTP is having him not know that he's going to be on the OTP until it's too late for him to back out. I like he cares, Yeah, he loves. What else is
