Hey, this is Ryan Fitzpatrick and you are listening to the e A Podcast with Eric Allen. Take it Away, Bart Scotts in studio. The podcast is underway and my man is talking a mile a minute, so we gotta catch up on something before we start talking football and Jets football, specifically Tropic Thunder. I've never seen Tropic Thunder? What do I have to know about it? And why do I have to see it? I mean, you've cheated yourself out of one of life great joys. I mean
you don't feel like I've let you do. Yeah, I mean you can recover you. You have sweat equity with me, so I'm not gonna hold this against you too bad. But by the next time we come here, I want you to watch this movie and I want you to tell me what you thought, you know, because I think it was one of the most cleverly written, you know, comedies. And then Robert Downer Jr. Really showed a different element of itself. Did Jack Blacks singing this movie at all? No? No? Um?
So he he pretty much is a his character is he's a guy that does all like the comedy. Nobody takes him serious. He has a series called like The Fartman's which is basically nothing professional, but it's about a family that farts and whatever. And then they have a they have a guy that I don't know his name, but he played in Um he played in the movie with Martin Big Mama's House, and you know, he's a pretty funny actor, but he plays a rapper. Um that's
that's that's gay, but nobody knows it's gay. And then you have Robert Downey Jr. Who's actually a white guy from Australia that's playing a black guy and he you know, he's one of the most respected actors in the world, and they actually put a black face on him in a beard and like a Jerry curl and he's in there right. So they're supposed to be going to war feminist feminist movie by war played by Nick Noy, who they're telling his story, but Nick, no, he is not
a real war vet. He he heard a story from an old vet in the streets and pretending to wrote a book, so he has fake hooks on it. And then you got the guy, uh what's that? Uh that serious? The guy with the Z that plays baseball all real crazy guy that the HBO serious one he's playing. He's also a playned that. He also plays the principal the New Principal comedy on HBO, where he's assistant principal. I know who you're talking about. He's name escaping me right now.
And man, I'm telling you, it's funny. Man. So like they they think they're familiale movie about war, but they dropped him off in the wrong spot, so it really is a war zone. But they're still acting and they're not sure if it's real or not. You know. Jack Black is like a dope at it, and the bat takes his cocaine and so he starts having like you know, relapsing and like, so they had to tie him down. But what happens It has been Stiller, you know, wanted
to be the star. So he gets lost or whatever. And then man, this one has Tom Cruise in it. Yeah, and it has he makes a cameo appearance, and it has the other guy. Man, I can't think of his name. Uh, he's pretty funny, like I'm telling you. And uh, Tom Cruise is like three hundred pounds in this movie. He's like a superhes like fun in the movie, and he's not doing so much so they taken McBride is the guy you were talking about who was in assistant principle.
So so they so they take Ben Still a hostage and Ben Stiller thinks it's still part of the movie, but he's not sure, so he's still acting. So then what happens is Matthew McConaughey has actually Ben Still's agent, trying to get him back to make his movie, to make his comeback right. So he he goes in, he goes into time to to Tom Cruise, who's funding the whole thing. He was like, listen, like once they took him,
they call him like yo, uh. He cuts us the terrorists out like listen, you gotta make a decision, baby, Yo. The movie seal is gonna be great if they kill him, Like we don't negotiate with Terris here, like we're ramming up. He cuts the terrace out there looking like we got the superstar simple jack, you know. So I'm telling you watch it, man and like, uh, Tom Crew, Tom Cruise like rapping in this thing and he dancing and stuff. It's the funny thing. But in the three hund of
pound suit man, So don't teach you. So all the fans out there listening. I know you guys have seen Tropic Thunder is one of the best comedies of this generation. You know, just as Funny is Get Him Greek, just as Funny is Old school Man. And you come back and I want you to report on this movie. All right, I will report on Tropic Thunder next week. There's no doubt about that. The NBA season got underway. Last night, Charles Barkley says Clay Thompson is better than Kevin Durant
and Steph Curry bart Scott's thoughts. I think what he was trying to say is that he's the best one of the best two way all around players, which is true. I think we had to rank the the best top five all around players. I think we will start with
Lebron that's a two way player. Then we'd probably go with Kawhi Leonard, and then we would probably go to Klay Thompson because we talked about his versatility last year, being able to guard a guy like Kevin Durant, but then also athletic enough to go out to Lillard and all the the other guys as fast and quick guards. So I understand what Charless trying to say, and Charles is always gonna say things that's gonna make headlines because he has to get your attention. But he's not as
crazy as people think. You know, I think Clay Thompson is a is a great shooter, but I think you know, Steph gets all the glory because he handles the ball. And Clay Thompson can average just as many points, I believe as Curry, but he saved some of his energy to play defense. You know, he's definitely to me a perennial All Star. Alright, some guys from the Spurs named Jonathan Simmons score twenty points. Who's Jonathan Simmons. I've never heard of that name before. Let me tell you something.
That's what the great organizations do. They always got one or two guys that you never heard of. I mean, he never heard a green. He had got cut from twelve teams before he got picked up by the Spurs. He figured out what he did. Well. You think about uh, Gary Neil, who used to train with me, who they made a start winning, got paid somewhere else. And some organizations just can develop guys and get them to buy in.
And the Spurs are one of those teams. That, you know, just fine guys when when they picked quiet Lytter, people look like who just because I like San Diego State basketball because Fish went there and resurrected that program. Yeah yeah, yeah yeah. Fisher from from from the Old Fast five. I'm saying I love how he wrote. You know, he's one of the best coach. I wish he would never would have got let go from Michigan because Michigan basketball
hasn't been the same since. But you know, you think about you know, teams that do that, and they have the ability to do that. So I wasn't surprised. I mean, Patty Mills. They made Patty Mills a player. You know, Patty Mills do made the playoffs like three years ago, you know. So it's exciting to see this new Spurs team. How they're gonna be post Duncan era. They look younger, they look more athletic and more versatile. And Aldrich's not at Dunk is not around, He's not there. He looked
more certain he shot the ball. He didn't think about it. You know, I think, you know, this is gonna be a tough out to be interesting, what happens. The NBA season got underway, but we talked about Barkley. You're in this business. You're all over the place. You like you're leaving for the city in a few moments. You do your radio show. We watch you on Sundays. I don't,
but I'm a stadium. Are you working? I'm trying to make a buck or fifty cents compared to your Barker, cents compared to your backer, five cents compared to your buck. But anyway, Charles Barkley, UM, since you do this now professionally, how much do you enjoy watching him and what he's done over the years. Charles Barkley is one of my heroes. Um, he's always being in my heroes. And I only have
like three professional heroes. I used to have four, but I had to disqualify one because he has some racist remarks. You know. For me, it was Barry Sanders Wallace, Charles Barkley, and Hawk Hogan had to disqualified called Hawk Hogan because some of his his thoughts came out and I didn't agree with some of his viewpoints. Uh you know, Um, but Charles Barkley, Braschie Wallace, what do they all have
in common? What are they both have in common that you know exactly where you stand with them, you know their position. They're going to say what they believe, and you know when they say it may not be correct, but they believe it. And I can always deal with somebody, And I try to model myself as being somebody that you can always understand. It's going to not sugar coning things, gonna tell you what they feel and if I'm wrong, and if they're wrong, I feel like they apologize and
say I was wrong, I got it wrong. See what happens in politics and society. People are so busy trying to prove themselves right instead of just admitting that we all make mistakes and we all, you know, can miss the can miss the ball. So no money in our industry. I shouldn't say nobody, because there are. I feel like it's the few. Now you mentioned accountability. People don't take responsibility for their actions. How can you? How can you? How can you be right about everything? Or you Socrates
like nobody's or no tamas. Nobody is correct about everything, is probably got a lot wrong. Man is in the room making predictions all that. So that's what I'm saying. So like I always appreciate people. That's going to be honest and I'm not gonna say what's popular, but what's gonna say what's right. And that's why I was trying to model my life about. You may not agree with everything I say, but you know when I said, it's
not coming from a malicious place. You know, it's coming from a place of honesty where I think it's right. And if I'm wrong, I give you example last year. You know everybody knows. Earlier in my career, I was very you know, I was critical of um, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Um when he was a Houston Texans, right because I had charted him and I had spoke about you know, I had it. You know I had to break him down when when Um, when you were a player, bro, No, no, no, no,
I had to break him down as an islands. My first year, my first year was CBS when he was the quarterback for the Houston Texas and you were working for the show before the show. No, not even tops, No, this is my first year. So this is so this is two years ago when when Ryan was with the
Houston Texas. So I had to go do research and it was some chart that he had like in eighty four games he had ninety two turnovers, right, So you I always had this thing where I should say, like this funny thing on air, and then last year when he came here, he had a great season, so I had to apologize, say, listen, I was wrong. He's he is playing different. This is a different Ryan Fitzpatrick than
what we've seen in the past. He should be commended and I want to come and I went on air in front of two million people and said I was wrong. Ryan Fitzpatrick is playing unbelievable right now, and I guess a tiger can change the stripes. But nobody said, hey, Bart, you know you need to apologize. I recognized that I had it wrong, and I made amends, and that's what
I think men should do. But in politics or in life, people are so busy, so they figured, you know you're wrong, but you're gonna try and find something else to support that you're right, just to try and say you're right, like why just why fight? Or you just move on and make a new prediction or new outlange statement. People just move on and let's say something at that point. That's why those guys are my heroes. I called it. I call these people fire starters. Yeah, you know what
I'm saying. But you mentioned Barkley. Now you probably have um. You're grounded individual for people who know you. I know, some people might look at you from Afar and say, wow, this guy's got a big ego. You have confidence, no doubt about it. But you're grounded individual. When you see Barkley and you watch him and you say he was a hero, you look up to him. But the way you are on air, now, do you see some of
your self in him? I modeled myself. Yeah, because I'm not afraid to say what needs to be said because I'm not. I don't. I don't play it safe, right, I don't play it safe. I don't some guys and someone now, some some analysts stand in his box like so, because what happens is if you stay in his box, if you ever do anything wrong, then you protected because you never took a strong stance on anything. Alright. Reality
is for the Jets two and five. You got back to the winning ways last week against uh, the Baltimore Ravens. We just did a film breakdown of Sheldon Richardson and that's gonna be on Flight Plan CBS eleven thirties Sunday morning, we took a look at three plays. You absolutely loved what you saw. At the number ninety one, I think he's one of the most dominant defensive players in the game. Um I think we miss it because he has to
play a position that is not his natural position. But he's doing what's best for the team, that what's best for itself. Because you put Sheldon Richards in that position, he's gonna give you double digit sacks, he's gonna give you eighty tackles, and he's gonna give you about ten fifteen tackles for loss. And what does that give you? That usually give you a defensive m v P type of award. He's that type of talent. He's playing out of position right now because that's what the team needs.
They have abundance of riches inside it. He's the only one out of the three meaning Williams or Wilkerson that can make that transition to the outside. But make no bones or body. He is probably the type as far as three techniques and five techniques and defensive tackles in the game. He's top three, maybe behind you know, maybe behind UMD, Aaron Donald, maybe Geno Atkins. People can make a case for him as as far as you know enter and I think it's a push, you know, with
with Mohammed. Why is Sheldon so unique? Especially inside? He has a motor, he has moves, he's has short area quickness, and he has power, motor, effort, technique, elusiveness and stature. He's not too he's not too tall where he gives you a lot of blocking serve. He's almost squatty. Is that is that fair to say? And how's Aaron Donald? How was war in sap? He's that he's that same
body tight to me? If he stayed there all his life, I would put say he would be it would he has the potential to be a better player in war in soap? Yeah, well that's amazing. That's amazing. I played with great players. I know one when I see one. Yeah, and you put him inside and you give him a tenure run and he continues to mature. What does that
say though about his maturity that he says? And he told the reporters after the game where I was in the postgame locker him and he said, you all must have forgot what I can do when I'm playing three or five technique up front only his only defense a year. Obviously, I'm gonna make more place. So Sheldon was kind of
like Flaby acid. But what does that say about his maturity level that they say that the coaching staff says, hey, listen, we need you to do this for the team, because Shelon Shelton says okay, because the playoffs, you haven't heard any you haven't heard him complaining about it one time. And really, when we think about the in the Grand Scammerathon, it's grant scheme of things that's hurting his money. He's
putting team before, he's putting we before me. So what does that say about who shelling the Richards in this? That says a lot about his character, especially for a young guys, especially especially for a guy whose character has been called the question. You know, you can talk about his off the field stuff, but as a teammate, I'll go to board with a guy like that. An he did a week twice on Sunday, you no doubt about it, And he and Brandon were asked about last week. I
guess in Kansas City. Apparently there was a yelling match or something like that. But what happens like like you, as a former player. I mean people, that doesn't mean anything to you, right, What's what's actually surprising is that some of that stuff gets outside, because that has to happen all the time. Raise your hand. If you never yelled at anybody, raise your hand. If you never from little league or or college or the pro has never got in a fight with one of your teammates, raise
your hand. You know, uh, and people forget, like, listen, we're gonna disagree. It's not about the disagreement. It's about what happens after. You know, you can have flair's who cares. It's a passionate, you know, tense environment. You know what I mean? You know when the winning business, when the performance businesses the performance business, and sometimes that's gonna happen.
You're still sharpened. Still, you got alpha males, you ran hot. Absolutely, people people when you have a lot of emotional disagreements with your own teammates at times. So I remember, I remember one time you talk about kenc. I remember one time Larry Johnson ran about for the yards because me and Ray was arguing before the snap. Serious absolutely listen, because listen, I listen, you ain't gonna tell me what I'm growing as man, and if you want to have
to discussion, you got a discussion right here. The hell with what else is going on? That's just what happens in the business. So yeah, absolutely, I'm not. I don't listen, I don't back down from nobody. You know what I'm saying, I'll bury my heels in where when I'm right and I thought I'm right, I'm right, and I'm a fight from my position there, nobody gonna push me on my spot. That's how I got here and that's how I stayed here.
So you can say whatever you want, but I think the decision I made a life got me winning, So I'm not gonna change so from time to time that had happens to them. Hell did you see Sherman, Richard Sherman basically arguing with the entire the entire team, right, what are we talking about? You and everybody would watch Richard Sherman as a teammate because he's a great player. He plays hard, he cares about winning. We've seen time
getting yellow matches with his coordinators. What are we talking about? Let me tell you something. We live in an error where we gotta find some type of news. You know, the reporters. They're trying to listen. They want bad because that's when they can make a strong stance and come out and look like they're dynamic. If everything is great, nobody wants to hear about the great stuff. They want to hear about the bass, though, so reporters secretly wish
for bass. You can think that they want you to win. They don't want you to lose so they can ask the tough questions so that they can put their resume up so that they can try and be the next Adam Schef. There they can try to be the next stage. Still, everybody's trying to chase somebody because unfortunately, the reason that we watch reality TV, the reason that we turn to page six. We listened to the gossip tabloids because we love to to to enjoy other people's misery because it
makes us feel better about our horrible, miserable life. But you know what, people can't handle that, And sometimes I could be too real. But like I said, when you close your eyes and you and you close you eye you think about it, you know I'm right, but you don't have to minute to me. Um, how do you feel? How bad do you feel for a guy? Like you know, Smith, you've suffered injuries throughout. Really, I never missed a game
for ten years. I only decided to miss one because the best I feel bad for him, No but that, but for some payment. But just seeing a guy who've seen it. I've seen it. Listen, when my opportunity came, Thank god that was healthy enough to take advantage of my opportunity. You feel bad for a guy because we never got a big enough sample side to see if he can do it. Uh. And then the ball is now in Ryan Fitzpatrick's court again, that's something that he
didn't think. What's gonna happen eight days ago or ten days ago, we come back from Arizona, Todd Bowl makes the call, says we're gonna go to Gino try to give our offensive spark. And it fits. At that time, he really thought his starting career with the Jets was over. Now he gets another opportunity. What do you think is going through his head now as he prepares for the Browns. Well, if he struggles again, the reality is that you know they're gonna call it back up up because you have
to take care of the ball. So you know, I know he came out strong. In his in his and expressed some of his thoughts and his villings. That's fine to half, but we're in a performance based business, so that he's going to step up and perform if he struggles.
You can't do the team at this service. You have to put the best player in and if you're not performing up to your level or performing up to the expectations, no different from a linebacker who misses a bunch of tackles one week, a kicker that misses a bunch of kicks. Everybody's audition every week for their job. And just because you're the quarterback doesn't mean that if you struggle that
we're supposed to stick with you and show confidence. You know what is that saying to the other positions you're devalue and everybody else. If Reba's go out there and give up five touchdowns and a bunch of holding penalties or buster screen struggles and give up two hundred yards to a receiver, he's probably gonna be an event on the bench. They're gonna value with the position. That's what
we signed up for. So you can't get caught up in your feelings because that's the reality of where we are and that's why we get paid the big bucks and the fans are asking about brace Putty and Christian Hackenburg. Well, Christian Hackenberg GM Mike mccagnet said after he drafted Hackenburg. In a perfect world, you don't pay, you don't play a guy or put him into the fire first year.
But guess what, it's not a perfect world. And if someone struggles, and if if the Jets let the the the the season get away, it's time for the young guys to show up. Yeah. Well, and PuTTY's in the second year, so it's a second year in the system. Unfortunately, he had the shoulder entry in the preseason. Now he's starting to practice. He needs more valuable practice for ubs. That's what Bol said this week. He has to because you know, guess what, some guys in look horriborn practice.
Some are not good practice players. You put them in a situation, they lock in, they kind of zone out, and they become awesome. Some guys are great practice players, getting the game live bulls and they choked. So we'll see what type of player. And Petty is what kind of practice player were you? I mean I was, I mean I practiced like I played, you know, but sometimes I would make mistakes, but then you make those mistakes when we get in the game. I'm not making those
mistakes because I've learned from him. You know, I tell people all the time in veteran is a veteran not because he doesn't make mistakes. It is because he's been there and he's learned from those mistakes. It's not about making mistakes, it is about not making the same mistakes. Jus Browns. Is this you know, be careful, careful, That's what I'm asking you. So remember we went down as the Baltimore raven went down to the Miami Dolphins and
they were you know, over like over fifteen. Slept on them, they hit a lucky play, and we were the team. You don't want to be that team. I mean, actually, anybody has played the Browns. They played hard, they just can't finish because they don't have a depth. You don't want to be the team that they finish against and figure it out and win this thing. They've had their first four games, they were right there in They should have beat the Ravens. They should have been a lot
of teams early in their career. You know, I'm I'm fortunate enough because I see all the games, so I get the full story. The record doesn't talk about the story. I mean, on their fourth quarterback and the guy holding comes in, he rushes for a hundred yards. Former guy from Stanford throws for like three hundred yards. I think they had like six or seven quarterbacks. Takes snaps under centers and and and sleep on prior. If you want to,
you gotta take care of Prior. Yeah, you got six four or four three speed and Gary Burners is a more than serviceable, uh tight end, and you gotta take care of Cross and you gotta worry about u Joe Thomas. Maybe no blame on on on that because over there you know you ain't getting around the Hall of Famer. And offensively, the Jets rush for a hundred fifty yards against something up Ravens team, No apologies. Everybody in the NFL has injuries, but Cleveland has stopped, has struggled to
stop the run. So maybe this is another opportunity for the Jets to get that ground game gone, make fights. You never know what how teams is gonna match up against different philosophies. All right, He's off to the city. That's part Scott. This is the e a podcast and I will have a report next week on traffics on this good I'm a dude planning a dude disguise. It's the other dude.
