The o'chilei effect is sponsored by Wallstreet, Window dot com and listeners like you now and now most aerated noise and in all media, Jack Olly, can you believe April thirty okay, twenty twenty three, twenty twenty four, April thirty, twenty twenty four, allegedly according to that thing we call a calendar, And this is the O'Kelly effect, live on a teesday Tuesday. Anyway, it is what it is, and we're gonna get to what it is

and what's going on. Of course, most of you will catch this further on down the stream by your final slab of choice, et cetera, et cetera, and get the podcast. But we are live at Ocelli dot com and elsewhere. So for the next little while, approximately an hour, what am I gonna do? I figure we'll do a little regular guy news with a twist. Now, normally I bring on regular Joe and he comes on and we talk about the news that he barely pays attention to it all.

And we go through a couple of pieces of analysis and maybe caught a word here or there, a conversation here or there. What's the analysis from somebody who really has decided not to give a crap about all of what is being reported on those TV shows we call the news. I mean, you could just as easily keep track of any fictional universe as you could the world around you, and be more or less entertained depending on who you are. You

could be more or less informed depending on who you are. Why not know the entire universe of the comic book genre or whatever the hell else Disney is vomiting out onto its platforming stream at this point, right? Why not? Or you could get to know what's happening in Gaza, etc. What's happening in Murca two point zero? Are we ready for the civil war? What about that presidential selection? Nope? I picked out a handful of things. I'm gonna go over them, and I'm pretty sure regular Joe is not read

into the news at all today. So this would be great first impressions for the stuff that are making impressions that are giving some people depressions. Okay, the world around us twisting and turning, and do we care anymore? Is apathy now? Apt? Is it the thing that you should embrace? Do you care about the opinionated podcasts out there? Because mostly the alleged alternative media.

What do they do. Let's grab up some mainstream articles and stuff, get mad about it, tell you they're lying to you, and then give you my opinion. And I got other friends. I'm gonna bring them on and we're all going to agree on our opinions. And you know why, because that's the only thing you want to hear. And that's why you tuned into their podcast was to hear your opinion echoed back to you. Well, that ain't no Shelly, that ain't the effect, and that ain't regular Joe.

So here we go, Regular Joe. How you doing tonight? Man? I'm hanging in there. I typically tell people I'm not bad for an old guy, not bad for an old guy. And yet you're younger than me, not too much enough, believe me. And clearly from your accent you've lived elsewhere. I mean, I'm living in in you know Joja at

this point. But but for people that don't know regular Joe, he's a Kentucky boy and apparently has a little bit of a reputation, might have a bad temper sometimes just saying I was recently discussing that with you off there. But anyway, we're not going to go there. We're going to go into what's going on in the world around us. So, Joe, have you been watching the news at all, reading about anything at all? Tell me, not at all. And the only articles I've looked at are just stuff

about rock music and what classic rock stars are doing now right. Probably partially spawned or partially spurred on, so to speak, by our conversation last week, which was about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, And it makes you start to consider things and remember, hey, maybe I liked a song from that artist, or that's right, that artist is a valid pick for the Hall of Fame or not, And maybe it made you go back into some music history in your mind and replay the soundtrack of your life. Even

so, you got inspired to look at music. Plus you like to play guitar. You love music anyway. But outside of that, I mean, not really looking to interface with the world outside of your square block or not really a block, but that little patch of land there near the Davy Crockett National Forest. Right other guy Daniel Boot, Oh, Daniel Book. I mixed them up. See this, almost almost everyone does, unless they're from Kentucky or Tennessee. Okay, so, and you know what's funny is he

just told me I mixed it up. And now I'm sitting here trying to remember which one did I mix for which Daniel Boone is that one? Yep? Okay, cool? So there you go. See how much I paid attention to exactly where that is. I knew it was one of those similar type of folk figures, but I mixed them up. And that's about probably the handle you have on the news. So how about we get to the

biggest things that are fueling right now the cable news networks. First, just I'm not looking to cover it in great detail, but we can talk about it a little. You want me to go there first? Or should we go to the strangest story I found today? Ooh, let's save the strange for last. Save the strange for last. That's not usually the way you handle things when you're looking at the ladies in the bar, but I understand that you might want to go that way. We'll save the strange for some

time towards the end. So let's begin with the most mundane then. How about that? That works? Fine? So here we go. I have notes because I had to sample a lot of stuff and realize we have wall to wall coverage on your the left side of the pool, supposedly right according to the political lines of the declination right, and what we have here is

the Trump trial. Do you know what's going on with the current Trump trial that's being broadcast like all day long and being observed upon and analyzed and all that. You know what's going on there, because it's been happening for nine days. I haven't seen a single second of it, and I'm very proud of that. Wish I could say the same thing about Game of Thrones. Okay, I have been a single second, but I was aware that he is on trial, and I'm pretty sure it's over his hush money. Right,

Okay, so you knew that much. And Game of Thrones, in all fairness, I've never watched a single episode and have only seen commercials for it, so I refuse anyhow, although I see it being referenced and somehow know that that's the reference they're making in other media where they say, hey,

I am a completely conservative individual. So what I'm going to do is watch story about incests that go on in a fictional universe with dragons, and I'm thinking they're talking Game of Thrones anyway, maybe I'm wrong about that. I know it's not Lord of the Rings though, Wait a minute, that could be Game of Thrones or DC right or what or DC Oh yeah, yeah that too, But what isn't that a Game of Thrones as well? So back to one of the Thrones that might be more adequately sitting down in

Florida at mar A Lago. But then again, he's in New York currently complaining that he can't go on the campaign trail, and that is the main thrust of what the political side of the equation that sides with him in broadcast media is saying, this is nothing but a democratic ploy to keep him off

the campaign trail. YadA YadA ya. But let's get into a couple of details, because today McDougall slash Stormy Daniels actually a lawyer that worked for both of them, and not that Aminati guy was on the stand today, so we were getting a play by play a lot. Also, the judge fined Trump nine grand for a bunch of violations allegedly of his gag order. You know, a gag order. But every day when they conclude these proceedings,

which Trump was compelled to have to be at in New York. What happens a badly miked appearance in front of all the cameras, and he comes out and says, this is not fair. This is the most ridiculous switch on ever. And he does it every day. Nine days of this crap now going on over whether they killed the story. We've already heard from David Pecker on the stand. Yes, that's the guy's name who runs what is it, American Media Incorporated, the parent company of the National Inquirer, et cetera,

et cetera. So I'm reading you in on all this quickly, right, Keith Davidson. Is that lawyer's name, by the way. Anyways,

So, and there's been this explanation, this back and forth. They're making the jurors read text messages back and forth because Michael Cohen, who at the time was one of Trump lawyers, he contends that, you know, he was trying to arrange the hush money payment and this and that winds up taking out a second mortgage on a house, didn't tell his wife about it, but he was going to put up the money personally for Trump, so Trump didn't have to put it up upfront, and then Trump would pay him back

later, and then, of course, you know, he learns exactly how Trump likes to pay people back. But Michael Cohen was a true believer in him until guess what, he had to go to jail for a while. Now, he went to jail, a kosher prison, by the way, where he got special kosher meals and all that kind of stuff, special treatment while in white collar prison over this whole thing. And meanwhile they want to say that this is a bunch of nonsense. And I got to tell you

something, Joe, here's the strange part. I agree with them. This is a bunch of nonsense. This is a lot of huge waste of resources, time, everything else to get at whether or not Trump mislabeled payments that were made in order to shut down stories about some of the women that he slept with while he was married, and indeed the porn star that I believe he was banging right after his wife gave birth to one of their kids,

which leads to the funniest thing that happened all day on the news. I'm watching the Fox News feed, and this guy from the show The Five, one of those really abrasive, you know, really says the quiet part out loud Fox Guys the show the five. He comes out and goes, well, I'll tell you what, I bet you. Trump's really pissed off because now he's forced to actually attend Baron's graduation, and he was looking to avoid

that. He would have had an excuse otherwise, but since he's in New York, he can now attend Baron's graduation, and he's pissed because he's got no good excuse to get out of it. I thought that was funny from his allies. But anyway, comedy aside, this is a huge waste of resources, huge waste of time. And at the end of the day, he shuffled a little hush money. Maybe he bothered to pay anybody back in order to kill two stories about chicksie was banging on the side during his presidential

selection run. And do I give a crap about this? Is there a real violation of the law? Maybe? Is it a felony? Is it worth this circus? No? And are they gonna actually prosecute him? I don't see how, because on the face of it objectively doesn't look right. And by the way, jury nullification, you only need one juror to basically go net and it's gonna be nothing. And I think it's gonna amount to

a whole lot of nothing except this. He has a daily reach into multiple platforms, can be heard all around the world because everybody's hanging on every event, every testimony, and everybody waits at the end of the day for him to come out and go this is unfair. This is a Democrat judge,

this is a Joe Biden trial. He's controlling this. You know, they can't decide, by the way, whether Joe is a tremendous mastermind controlling and wielding the entirety of the Justice Department as a weapon against people, or if he is completely deranged, lost and forgot which diaper he's wearing. On a daily basis, they can't make up their minds as to which Joe Biden they

want to attack here. And Trump is the guy falling asleep in court, by the way, And I don't blame him there because he's not allowed to talk, and he's falling asleep because court is boring unless you're actively doing something. And all he can do is open up his mouth and cause more problems for him, because whoops, that's the way. Actually most of us go to court. You better keep your mouth shut and follow the judges directions.

Otherwise you're gonna get berated, held in contempt, jacked around, or ruled against. That's the way most of us go to court. Now. Trump's not used to that because normally, even when he totally screws people over and winds up paying pennies on the dollar on settlements, he doesn't have to go to court. This time he did, and ops one of the very few family members that decided to show up in support, with solidarity gleaming from them

in the courtroom. Recently is in the nine days, I think we've had two appearances from family members. Today, Eric Trump decided to check in and make sure he was there to show support for dad. But now that I've covered all that, Joe your thoughts, I think that you covered that quite well. Actually, I mean, he's complaining that he can't go on the campaign trail, but he is on the campaign trail, folks. If he's on that TV every day, he's getting coverage that no other candidate's getting.

Right, He's getting the publicity, and there's no such thing as bad publicity. We all know that. Unless that you know, we're idiots so this is working to his advantage. There's no doubt about it. I mean, because he's getting FaceTime with the whole country on TV all day long, you know, So it's working to his advantage. So I mean, is it a mastermind planned by the Democrats or is it a mastermind plan by his own party or is it just a plan by the singular party system to make sure

that when you reinstall Trump this time it will be with good reason? After all, he can make an argument that he's been the victim of the system. I mean, even when this stuff goes to the Supreme Court, which he fully loaded, he can complain about it all no matter which way this thing turns out for him. And he's in the news every day, a guaranteed press conference with multiple coverage and lots of interest at the end of every day in court. So how do you beat that for free publicity? By

the way, you don't have to pay for any of it. And he'll probably stiff his lawyers along the way. Last thing, by the way, there's going to be another hearing on his gag order at nine am on Thursday. As this circus continues, day by day, they stretch it out and again I think it'll be much to do about nothing but that nine thousand dollars, which would be a horrifying and crippling fine that you or me probably not a big deal to him if he ever bothers to pay it. That's his

contempt fee. And they're gonna have a hearing about his gag orders and such on Thursday at nine am and get right back to the court proceedings at ten am, because he's on TV all day with this and gets the cherry on top at the end, like I said, an unmolested statement if you will, in front of reporters at the end of the day, and the only thing that was logical to complain about is Jake Tapper on CNN bitching that. Guess what, They didn't mike him real well at the end of every day.

They need to fix that, because Jake Tapper is sick of the past nine days not having trump micd well, even though he speaks loudly enough to be heard. They don't have great sound quality there, so I get that part. As a matter of fact, I support Jake Tapper's complaint. We should have great sound quality. I mean, if you're gonna give us this nonsense at least make it up correctly, don't you. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I agree fully. If you're gonna what's the term I usually

use for this, It's like when somebody says the word frige. You know, I'm like, don't do that. If you're gonna use the F word, go for the gold, you know, Yeah, the same. It's the same principle. If you're gonna put on this show, good lord, I've got surrounds down in my house and I don't have any money, so well, and here's the thing. If you're gonna do something, at least

do it right. I mean, like, I totally don't understand freely, completely free adult individuals who have lots of options turning around and somehow voluntarily buying soft core porn. Look, if you're gonna buy it, get the real thing, get it all the way, you know. And if you're gonna send hundreds of dollars in, why not just rent the girl for an hour? I mean, come on, you know what I'm saying. You're gonna do it, make it a legitimate shot, you know. Yeah, So,

if you're gonna do something, do it right. I don't know, there's a lot of ways to look at it, but they're and ultimately, none of this is gonna stop him from winning. Let me put that in quotation marks winning. This quotation marks again election because he's gonna be the president the best I can tell. And I'm basing that on observing the people. And when you observe the people, and if it's a representative government, then

he he other than his money and privilege. Yeah, it's about right, Yeah, no, And that's exactly the guy that they want to elevate. Because if you talk to anybody who is his supporter, right realistically, and they're being honest, the fact is the only thing that separates them from him is that money. And they think that because he's rich, he deserves it. I mean, that's the thing, right, he deserves to be a

leader because he was a businessman and he knows his business. Now they only think that because he's survived so long and he was on TV and he tells

you how rich he is. Truthfully, they have no concept of what it's like to, you know, be able to absorb hundreds of millions of dollars of fines and everything else, right, right, And these court cases against him, I'm telling you, they're all gonna fall on appeal evaporate over time, whether it's this Georgia case with all this other mess, or this current circus in New York. And again, none of it will stop him from ascending to the presidency if that is indeed the plan, and I will be

shocked if that is not the twenty twenty fourth plan. So now that we've tackled the Trump thing, we can drop him one more thing though. On the ironic side of this, I just watched a documentary today. Well, sorry about that, starring Stormy and Daniels Nice. What was it called that. I'm looking for it now because I can't remember the name of it nor

which streaming service I watched it on. She tells the whole deal, I mean, how she was afraid for her life because she was suing the president and people were threatening to kill her and follow her around in traffic and telling her that they knew her daughter's name and mm hmm yeah, and it was it was it was, uh, you know, I kind of respect her, I mean, because she seems quite forward and honest to me. It seems that way, But you know, at the end of the day,

I gotta be honest with you. We have a celebrity driven society, right where one way or another, if you have a level of fame, or you have an alleged level of financial security, and people just make exceptions. You're allowed to behave a certain way, it's okay. And so in that way, I gotta tell you, I don't blame the people that support him, that support her. She's you know, hey, she got paid. She's a celebrity too. I mean a different kind of celebrity than Trump,

but still she's a celebrity. I guarantee you she had plenty of fans before we heard her name connected to Trump. Uh, you know, just saying, all right, I don't know why I didn't remember this. I just found it. It's a Peacock original and it's called Stormy, and here you go. It was entertaining and somewhat informative. I mean, she even tells about the sexual encounter. She tells that it was not a secret everyone knew and you know, and said that she kept her mouth shut until he did

not right. Well, look, and here's the thing I don't even care about. Do you care? That's the thing? Love this guy or hate this guy? Does anybody actually care? I mean of course, of course they don't. They cared when Clinton did it, but they don't care that he's doing it right. And meanwhile, he was just grabbing the intern that he happened to have access to. Did she go over the whole mushroom shape thing in that documentary? Did she know? I didn't see her mentioned that.

However, I will loosely quote her about the experience. She said that he was telling her that he was going to get her on Celebrity Apprentice and took her upstairs to his room, and he left the room. And when she claims that as soon as he came out, he cornered her and began humping her. She said, but it was not rape because I did not say no. But it was shocking. Yeah. Look, and there's no

rape allegation here right now, and I didn't allege that at all. She says that it was consensual because she did not say no. Well, and there you have it. And here's the thing. I don't care what he does. Is he there you go? It does not bother me so long as he's not victimizing somebody. Why do I care? You know what I mean? And if his wife wants to live with it, that's her business and his business, and who cares? What's that got to do with policy?

And of course I'm using these words loosely because I think policies it's just words. They don't mean it. Well, you know, and he just makes, you know, bloviating declarations. I mean, do you believe for a second that Donald Trump wrote any of his policies, executive orders, laws? I mean, you think he had any hand in creating any of that. No. Not only do I not believe that he wrote any of it,

I don't believe he read any of it either. No, fine, fair enough, And you know what, I'm also not bothered by that. Indeed, you know, some of these people on the left were shocked today talking about well, look, you know, there was actually a point at which Sarah Huncaby Sanders is handling some of this hush money stuff, and I'm like, well, of course she's his pr person. Now, I know,

we shouldn't be having government employees dealing with his scandals. He should take care of that, you know, during his personal time, with his personal assets. But the way Trump saw it, as soon as he becomes president, he owns everything, just like the documents. Anyway, that's a story for another day. But I want to drop Trump because, eh, I'm just sick and tired of talking about him, and I know I'm going to have to a bunch more in the next six months. Yeah, yeah,

I don't discuss him with anyone anymore because it's extremely frustrating. Right, It's extremely frustrating to me to talk politics with anyone who is actually politically minded because

they've been fooled. So there's no common ground for me to start a conversation with them politically because I know that they bought it, and as soon as they have an intense emotional reaction, you know one thing for sure, you're going to get lots of frustration, obfuscation, and problems trying to communicate with him. And the weird thing is people judge you for this and start to think of everything, like judge everything about you based on your political orientation now,

which is something that didn't used to be. It wasn't like, oh, I don't want you playing with that kid in the neighborhood because his parents are Republicans or you know, his parents are Democrats. Yeah, you can't play with those kids, you know, It's not like that. You can't play with them. Lib Dard's yeah, right, exactly. So let's move on to some stuff that actually does affect us directly and something that you know, I mean, we're not going to have any say in this anyway.

He's going to be installed as president, I'm pretty sure, unless they can come up with a new shocker. And oh, by the way, just like we talked about RFK Junior on Friday, I'm still about as impressed as I was to begin with, although he's gotten himself on a couple of ballots since then, but he's not going to get all fifty states ballid access,

so even theoretically he can't possibly win the selection. So no, I have a couple of possibilities, a couple of directions, and I'll let you choose one to go in because on these I want to read from a couple of articles, which, by the way, there's more than one article out there about this, but I picked the cream of the crop best I could to

handle each of these issues. So let's give it to you. In short, we have On the one hand, I'll just give you the headline we live in the age of vulture capitalism, and vulture capitalism is in quotes, the next one, the Twinkie Defense, what we know about diet and crime? Okay? And then in Stars and Stripes of all Places Okay, I'm not kidding, the military publication online version of course, sword wielding man attacks passerby in London, killing a fourteen year old boy and injuring four others.

So these are the three stories that I have, and I'd like you to pick one so we can begin to pick it apart a little. Let's go with twinkies. Twinkies, why not? Now you've heard of the twinkie defense, I imagine, have you, Joe? Uh no? Ah? Okay, so then this is going to be really fresh stuff to you, even though this is a very old concept. So let's get to it. I'm not gonna do the key takeaways part. Maybe I should nah forget the key. Yeah, we'll do the key takeaways at the top of the article.

And by the way, all of this stuff is going to be in the in the notes with the podcast. But also I'm gonna drop some of these links in the chatroom at ochelli dot com and you can always roll it back by date and take a listen. So remember again, it's April thirty, as I speak, and if you want to roll back in the o'ceelly chat room, then you'll see me dropping links to some of these things that I'm going to read from and discuss. So from big sink dot com. Okay,

here we go the article. Let's see it has a listen option on it, key takeaways at the top. Like I said, uh, let's see, I was looking for the author's name. Oh, there we go, Ross Pomeroy. Anyways, in nineteen seventy eight, Dan White murdered San Francisco City supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Of this, there was no doubt. White had turned himself in then tearfully and remorsefully confessed to shooting

each of the men his former colleagues multiple times. At White's nineteen seventy nine trial, the only question was how stiff his penalty would be. Now, I'm gonna pause from the article and remind you that, of course, Harvey Milk, all right, was the outwardly gay mayor of San Francisco, and Mayor George Moscone was also connected to Harvey Milk, and this guy, yeah, indeed, assassinated Harvey Milk. I think it was. Let's see Sean Penn, who starred in a movie about milk. It might have been called

milk directly. Anyways, let's get back to the article. White's lawyers ran a skillful defense during the court proceedings. They claimed that their client's mental cape capacity was diminished by stress and severe depression. His heinous actions were not fully within his conscious control. Thus a first degree murder charge, punishable with twenty five years to life in prison was too harsh. A sentence pause from the article. Do remember that in the early nineteen seventies, the death penalty was

abolished in California. Actually, a moratorium was put on it, and they decided. Even Charles Manson had his death penalty commuted, so did Sir Anne Surhan okay, who still remains in prison. Anyways. Manson died a few years ago, but Sir Han's still there. Anyway, back to the article. During the trial, the defense team questioned the psychiatrist, doctor Martin Blinder. He told them that White was a fitness enthusiast who prided himself on eating

right and staying healthy. However, during depressive episodes, White would enter into a quote vicious circle end quote of junk food consumption whenever he felt things were not going right, he would abandon his usual program of exercise and good nutrition and start gorging himself on junk foods Twinkies, Coca Cola. Blinder testified. Blinder subsequently stated, quote, there is a substantial body of evidence that ends

susceptible individuals. Large quantities of what we call junk food, high sugar content, food with lots of preservatives, can precipitate anti social and even violent behavior. There have been some studies, for example, where they have taken so called career minded criminals and taken them off all their junk food and put them on milk and meat and potatoes, and their criminal records immediately evaporate. The

press went wild, dubbing the lawyer's tactic the quote twinkie defense. Were they try to blame their client's double murder on junk food question mark the twinkie defense. In actuality, White's legal team only mentioned his unhealthy venders as a sign of his depression, not the cause of it. Still, the twinkie defense narrative is stuck, and it might have paid off. White was only convicted

of manslaughter and sentenced to seven years in prison. In a paper recently published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, a multidisciplinary team of researchers referenced the quote twinkie defense end quote. In the decades since Dan White's trial, scientists have explored the relationship between nutrition and crime. They found intriguing

signs that the two are linked. Now, this article goes on further, but I'm not going to read the whole thing, and I'm going to tell you this. If you consider that the general quality of the food for people that live in food deserts in inner city areas, a lot of them are eating crap, And gee, I wonder why the violent crime is so high up. If you take a look at the dietary consumption, your average as sociopath, your average career criminal does not eat a healthy diet. They never

have. Now, is this correlation or is this causation? There's a big

consideration. But I'm telling you now there's something to this. Indeed, I even took notes with a more than one person when of all people, John Barber pointed out to me that the individuals that we know personally who have sweet tooth issues right where they're very susceptible to they seem to always have to have a need to take in some junks, some sugar, especially candy as adults, and they have a need for like a little bit of a constant flow.

It may not be every single day or several times a day, but at some point or other they have kind of a requirement where taking in junk, a lot of high sugar items, things like this, garbage food. Well, it's usually because they've suffered some sort of trauma. You put these things together, the traumatic sugar response, where people consume sugar when generally they've

had bad childhoods. That's the way John Barber put it to me, people with bad childhoods often really get into their candy bars and stuff as adults. But put that aside, that's just an observation that seems to be proving itself out as I examine anybody I get to know. But here's the weird thing. Think about this. The people that are career criminals, the people that are constantly involved in the violent, nonsensical, you know, pressurized situations.

They live in food deserts, they crap food. They are on you know, low incomes, which basically makes it impossible for someone to afford organic stuff for someone to afford good food, clean food. And you know what, I wonder, if it is just that simple, if people could afford to eat better, and you are what you eat, maybe you wouldn't be such a junk food person if you didn't have junk food to eat, because that

wasn't your only damn option. What are your thoughts on this, Joe, Well, you made me want sweets, and now I'm chewing on a piece of taffy. Okay, fair enough, and quite honestly I want a piece of chocolate right now as I'm talking to you. But still think about that though, if you consider name me seriously, If you examine the life of any career criminal, any severe serialized criminal, whether it be a murderer or a rapist, an arsonist, you know, some kind of thief that's constantly

doing whatever they're doing, take note, they're never healthy eaters. The people that are engaged in that almost seemingly addicted to crime and violence and abusing trespassing upon others and their property. Take note, they're never people that have good diets. Have you ever noticed this? Well, no, I have it, But now that you mention it, you remind me of our first subject of the night. Yeah, okay, Trump loves fast food. See, I didn't want to go back to Trump. I didn't even want to relate

it to I really wanted to think about poor people. Now, Trump by choice eats his KFC. And you know, you see what he orders with the big husky football players when they're all coming to the White House. Right, what was it the three hundred Big Macs or whatever, huge amount of fast food. But look, forget about his fast food. But consider it anyway, and forget about Trump. Let's go to poor people. What do they eat? Take a look at the dietary intake of poor people when they're

struggling. Sometimes they don't have enough to eat. But when they do have enough to eat, it's usually the cheapest, lowest priced crap possible. Lots of high fructose corn syrup, lots of sugars, lots of fillers, lots of garbage, junk food, creating a junk situation. And again I remember being told as a child, you are what you eat. It definitely, but think about it. People that say they're depressed, Yes, in the in the Twinkie defense trial, Uh, it's a result right where he goes

to the junk food as a result of his depression. And you've heard that before. I mean, whether it's a woman who says, I gotta eat a whole thing of ice cream when I'm depressed or when I have my period or whatever, or it's a dude who says, you know what, when I feel down a lot of times, I gotta go consume this or that. And oh, by the bye, what is a lot of the alcohol

that people intake? Sugar? So is sugar sugary substance, junk food, things that are low in nutrition but high in sugar content and filler garbage content. Is this both causation and correlation where if you're you know, in a bad situation, you reach for that stuff, but also you create worse situations by constantly consuming it. And obviously, if that's the chemistry you're putting into your chemistry set you call your body, it's going to affect you. So

it could be causation and correlation where it's a vicious cycle. What do you think of that? It could very well be you know, you are what you eat. They say, so you eat a bunch of swine, or eat a bunch of sugar, a bunch of junk and you're probably going to be a swineful junkie person. There you go. I mean, I don't know why this is a difficult thing for people to wrap their minds around.

Of course, you know, everybody blames one hundred things. And you know, Kim was having a debate online with somebody about, gee, what do we do with these kids who are violating curfew? Well, we'll put the parents in prison, you know, that's the response. Let's bring more cops in, Let's bring more of the system in. And I know that's a lot of people's responses. And hey, if we can't all the kids through the juvenile system hard enough, let's put their parents in the court system too.

YadA YadA, YadA. But consider again, if all they're fed is crap, and all they're surrounded by is crap, what do you expect them to act like or value crap? Nothing? So here we go. All I'm saying is maybe the answers are way simpler than people want to make them. And it's not about the system that you know is meant to incarcerate, punish, and indeed penalize us all. But maybe it is about the system that is feeding us crap. What do you think? It could very well

be? It is absolutely a possibility because you know, that brain needs fuel. And if you know, if you've got a car and you put fuel in it that's drugged or has too much water in it, then your car is not going to run right. So if you're putting you know, junk fuel in you, that's what your brain's run on. There you have it.

So anyway, let's consider the rest of the you know, the rest of the landscape out there, if you will, maybe we should go with Since we handled the twinkie defense, we got vulture capitalism or we got the sword wielding man one way or the other. I think we'll save the sword wielding man for the end and go with vulture capitalism. What do you think?

Okay? And I find this phrase interesting and have not read the article, so I just grabbed this based on the phrase because I think it's a perfect way to look at it. What kind of system are we living in where indeed the poor get poor, the rich stay rich and if you're privileged, you get away with anything you want. Okay, really, and that's the way the world works. Oh good, that reminds me of one of

those rock and roll articles I read today. The very heading said Roger Waters was talking about is Us and Them tour and his quote was, it's about the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. M Gee, I wonder why somebody would create art with that in their mind. Oh, because they're thinking about things as opposed to just, you know, being forced into reactionary

politics and such. But look, I don't take too seriously what these guys have to say, but still musicians occasionally cool that He related it to that old Pink Floyd song Us and Them, you know, and he said, that's that's what he was talking about. There you go, And look, philosophy often can come from rock and roll, so keep that in mind as we go. This article is under the current Affairs section on Okay, Current affairs dot org. Excuse me, and we live. We live in the

age of quote vulture capitalism. The headline is just striking to me. I love it, but did not read this article. So let's discover together what vulture capitalism is great, okay. Grace Blakely is one of the left's leading economic thinkers. In her new book, Vulture Capitalism, Blakely explains how capitalism

really works and gives a crucial primer on the modern economy. She joins Today to explain why conceiving of free markets and quotes and quote government planning end quotes as opposites is highly misleading because one neoliberal, because our neoliberal quote market based

end quote economy involves many deep ties between the state and corporations. Instead of thinking of quote capitalism end quote and quote socialism end quote as a spectrum that runs from markets to governments, Blakely says we should focus our analysis on who owns and controls production and who gets the benefits. The conversation originally appeared on the Current Affairs podcast. So this is a conversation Joe pulling away from the article, and I think I'm going to read a few pieces of the back

and forth and get your take on it. If you don't mind, what do you say? Hey, that sounds good to me, okay. Nathan J. Robinson asks Blakely this, when I describe you to people, Grace Blakely, I describe you as quote a scary, smart end quote. You

know everything about the global economy, and you've read everything. This new book, Vulture Capitalism contains mountains of research explains the way the entire global economy works and also provides a compelling alternative vision of how the entire economy could be structured. That's what you'll get when you pick up Vulture Capitalism by Grace Blakely. Grace says, what an intro, what a description of the book. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. Back to Robinson, Yes, it's phenomenal.

I really do mean that. There's so much in the book, and so I was trying to think of what I can start with that is simple and goes to the core of it. So we have this popular conception that is everywhere there's something called the quote state end quote, and there's something called the quote market end quote. Quote capitalism end quote is when the market makes decisions. People choose what to buy in the market, and that's what determines

what happens in the economy. The quote state end quote is the other thing. Quote socialism end quote is when the state owns everything and does the planning. This binary state slash market capitalism slash central planning is very common, and I think one of the core things you're trying to do is blow this apart. Blakely yes, just completely blow it apart. It's just wrong. The reason that I started thinking that this was something that I needed to write at

the beginning of the Pandemic twenty nineteen. There had been the recent loss of the general election by the Labor Party. I was doing a bunch of interviews on TV during the pandemic, and all the kinds of new readers and interviewers were saying, quote, Jeremy Corbin lost the election, but ultimately you got what you wanted because we have the state spending loads of money and that socialism. We didn't even need Jeremy Corbin to win the election because you've got socialism

and it's being delivered by Conservative Party. I just found it so staggering every time I was confronted with this argument, and it led me to realize that the vast majority of people, even educated people who were asking these questions, just don't know the difference between capitalism and socialism and have this flawed understanding of

what capitalism actually is. It comes from the divide that we've had in our politics between social democracy and neoliberalism, between Frederick von Heike, who was the darling of the neoliberals, and John Maydard Keynes the two heroes or villains, depending on which side you're on of our economic and political debate for most of the twentieth century. Keene said, quote, we need a state to tame

the irrationalities of the market. We need government intervention, and we need the public sector to invest end quote, even if in the middle of a crisis, and just to give them jobs to create income and kind of boost economic growth. And then how it comes in and says this kind of planning by the state is the source of all tyranny and creates inefficiencies that undermine the functioning of the market. We need less state, a different kind of state that

does less stuff. Basically, that is the kind of argument that won the nineteen eighties and saw neoliberals like Thatcher, Reagan, and Pinochet in Chile come to power. Everywhere we're told that they shrunk the state, but they didn't Robinson. Even leftists say they did. Blakey exactly. We get called out here because we're also signed up to this kind of dictamony. We often say things like they quote deregulated end quote and reduced public spending and all that sort

of stuff. And while in some cases that is true, it's very misleading because with the type of regulation that we have, there wasn't less regulation after the neoliberal shift. There was actually often more. It required huge amounts of regulation to create markets where no markets existed before, for example in healthcare, in the area of the public sector. Now I'm going to stop, and

here we go reframing history a bit. You have to consider that state intervention, the markets, the economy, all of these fictional constructs are completely manipulated and have real world effects. But people have this idea that a guy like Reagan removed all of this stuff. He was actually almost like what a libertarian is, less government, smaller government, But the government didn't in actuality get

smaller. The influence on business, the manipulations of the markets, the money itself, everything has only increased over time, which is very anti capitalist. And in truth, is there even a capitalist system that exists at this point without some sort of socialistic or almost communistic aspects in it? Do we not have complete blends all these purists out there, who are you know, Kingsian

economic people or the other way around. It's irrelevant. The system in and of itself has become so all encompassing that to try and say that there's any sort of independence available for you to you know, begin to occupy as an individual or as a group of individuals, it's almost impossible now and that's the way things have gone. So what are your thoughts on this? I know it's a little more a little more complex than the earlier issue, and don't

worry, we're going to simplify it before we're done. But what are your thoughts about this, this idea that you know, these people that were supposed to be heroes of smaller government, greater freedom for other people, the truth is they actually made it worse. And it's not really even their fault, because that is the inertia, if you will, of the entirety of the

system. The more the system and government gets involved in private business, the more that there is no such thing as private business, the more that there is no such thing as upward mobility. Here we are. You know, people are afraid of socialism, but it's built into everything already, and neoliberalism is really how a lot of this stuff needs to be described as opposed to conservative economic policy, because the reality is the government never gets uninvolved once it's

involved in things so what you thought. It actually reminded me of Jay Krishna Murdy listening to the article there. He always talked about how it didn't matter what you called your government, because all you're really doing is identifying with something that's larger than you. And it doesn't really matter what you call it. Call it socialism, call it communism, call it capitalism. It's basically all the same thing. So you know, it's kind of how the lady put

it to right, Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, And christ Namurdy said that a long long time ago. You're just identifying with the larger because you feel small, And I'm quite honestly, all of the isms amount to basically ending up in the same basket. I mean again, it's much like the whole I'm on the left, I'm on the right, I'm a Republican, I'm a Democrat. At the end of the day, all you are is cheerleading for one or other of the corporate entities that are all connected to the

same thing. You know, even when you're cheering for your favorite NFL team, it is the NFL that benefits in total and redistributes the wealth amongst themselves. Anyway, after you spend your money It's just like watching the WWE formerly the WWF, and you can root for the good guys, the bad guys, or the guys who have the best masks or face paint you like whatever, or the best finish and move always like Superfly Jimmy Snooka for that. He was always going off of those top ropes. Oh yeah, but a

horrible human being behind the scenes. Superfly Jimmy snook a abusive, crazy, cocaine adduled, but hell of an interesting entertainer, you know about. And he could have been a politician, couldn't he. Well, that's what I was about to say. And you were talking about the isms, and I want to mention my two least favorite isms. I actually despise them. Sure, those two isms are nationalism and patriotism. Uh again, I have to refer to Christiana Murty again on that he referred to them as a form of

stupidity. M fair enough, yeah, so, but the lady seemed to be spot on, but in a way that she believes in the system. So it reminded me of Christiana Murty, who did not. But they were saying the same thing. Fair enough, but look, she's part of the evil left. Joe so you can't listen to her, you know that, right, You gotta shut him down early and right away. Looked they even remotely identify her as being on the left. That's like the church lady going

satan. You know, it's exactly that anymore. It's just it's all the devil if it ain't part of your program, right, yeah, that's exactly right. Yeah, And around here home, man, anything that's outside the right wing norm is the devil. Right, well, that's what I was going for. So let's go to something that is a little more in the right wing norm, but not necessarily because this story isn't right wing norm, but odd place for it to put it, even though it's appeared in several

publications Stars and Stripes. Now, for those of you who don't know what Stars and Stripes is, it's a military Stars and Stripes military publication. It used to be like the army newspaper, you know, and nowadays it survives online. I don't know if people subscribe anymore. But I have one of the weirdest stories I've ever seen pop up on Stars and Stripes, and I think I got this out of JP Satilli's rundown because it was just one of

those weird random things he threw in toward the end. But I got to tell you I think that there is a great metaphor in this story, and I'm not gonna I'm not going to reveal it to you the listener. I want you to figure out the metaphor so you can play the home version of the Ocelli effect. How's that sound? And are you ready for this one? Joe, I'm ready? You say? This is from JP. It was on the Rundown. He didn't write this, no, but it was. When he does the rundown. You know, you get a bunch of

news stories that come together to make you know, a narrative. Well, anyway, even if you read his rundown today, you would not know what the hell to make of this story. I'm telling you the metaphor. You got to figure out what I'm thinking the metaphor is if you want to identify it, and by the way, email it to me if you think you know what grand societal metaphor I think this represents. If you want to play

this home game with me. If you don't, don't, and otherwise, you know, look, just ignore what I'm saying, like most people do. Anyway. Stars and Stripes, okay, and this is Sylvia. I'm not sure how to say the name because it's like hui, so I guess it's high or who I all right, and it says it came from the Associated Press, but they republished it today in Stars and Stripes April thirtieth.

All right, London, here we go. A man wielding a sword attacked members of the public and police officers in a northeast London suburb Tuesday, killing a fourteen year old boy and injuring four other people. British authorities said a thirty six year old man was subdued with a stun gun and arrested on suspicion of murder in a residential area near a Hanault subway station. Police said the

violence wasn't being treated as terror related or targeted attack. Hang on a second, So you have to identify that a lunatic whipping a sword around in public. He he's not a terrorist. Weird that you even need to say that. Anyway, Let's go back to the story. Police said that the fourteen year old died at a hospital from his injuries. Two police officers were hospitalized for stab wounds. Two other people were also injured. Chief supped Supt.

I'm not sure what that's short for, but you know, some sort of police official Stuart Bell described the incident as quote truly horrific end quote quote I cannot even begin to imagine how those affected must be feeling. End quote, he said outside the homes in East London where the attack happened. The Metropolitan Police said they were called early Tuesday to reports of a vehicle being driven into

a house in a residential street and people being stabbed. Witness videos broadcast on British media showed a man in a yellow hoodie holding a long sword or knife walking near houses in the area. One video showed police officers yelling quote drop the sword end quote and quote lock your doors end quote as they chased the suspect, who was seen climbing over fences and into people's gardens. Deputy Assistant Commissioner aide adol Adaken said police don't believe there was a threat to the wider

community. Quote we are not looking for more suspects end quote, he said. Quote the incident does not appear to be terrorists related end quote. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the incident was quote shocking end quote, adding quote such violence has no place in our streets end quote. King Charles the Third said his thoughts and prayers were with the family of the young victim, and he saluted the courage of emergency workers. Buckingham Palace said, Transport for London said

the Hanault station was closed because of a police investigation in the area. And yeah, that's from Stars and Stripes today. So, Joe, without any further commentary from me outside of that one, I had to throw in there, like you gotta tell us this is not a terrorist attack, like seriously, but anyway, skip that, because all I can think of is if it was a terrorist attack, it might be like those old Bugs Bunny cartoons where the guy was running around going hassan shop. But since it wasn't that

okay in our cartoon world, Joe, any thoughts. Pretty tragic that a fourteen year old had to die by sword in twenty twenty four number one, So condolences to his family or her family. Was it fourteen year old? Male or female? I can't remember, you know, I don't recall if it said male or female either. But let's take a look. Let me roll it back. But I think they just said fourteen year old, because you don't usually identify miners, I think so, so that's probably why I

don't remember. But yeah, it's a pretty tragic A family lost a young member. And it's really strange that again that you've mentioned it twice already,

but I've got to hit on it again. It is really strange that they specified not terrorists, no more suspects, you know, but I don't see the metaphor though I think I might may have missed that, no problem, but you know, trying to understand that this is not a terrorist attack, I mean, just logically one would say it's not something that can usually be a shared group operation when you've only got one sword. I mean, I

imagine that a group of guys with swords could do some damage. But again, this is just proof that, you know, a psycho in any society is going to grab whatever accessible tool they can to do damage when it's time. Clearly this is a mental health issue. Okay, But you know, I knew a guy back in my early twenties that did a whole no maybe maybe late teens, we'll say late teens. I knew a guy that did a lot of damage with a boat release. Yeah, fair enough, fair

enough, But this is a thirty six year old man. And here's the funny part to me about this again, is that there is no mention of a you know, a motive. There's no mention of mental health here. None of that is in this story, is it. Nobody said anything about

mental health? And you know we deplore violence in our streets. Okay, fine, general statement, thoughts and prayers from the King, King Charles, you know, but here we are a lot of things missing from this story that we would normally get from a mass casualty event, a serious tragedy with a gun. Oh wait, in England, you don't have lots of people carrying guns, do you no? Huh. So what you're telling me is that somebody who is mentally unstable might just go get any old thing they can

get their hands on to go do damage with. True, and some people would argue that they do less damage with the soul, you know, just because of the difficulty level, then they would with a semi automatic or you know, even not an automatic weapon, but a semi automatic weapon or a fairly useful repeating weapon that you can fire with, you can certainly do a lot more damage, a lot quicker and to a lot more people. I think you can't argue against that logic, But what do you do about it?

And oh, by the way, nobody mentioned mental health again nowhere in here. And this is a guy swinging a sword, a thirty six year old man who, by the bye, not sure what happened. Also, at the beginning of the story, they drove a car into a house somewhere. Nobody explains any of that. And this is all based on police statements. And by the way, this isn't Stars and Stripe's fault. They're republishing something from Ready the Associated Press. Really, yeah, so what the hell?

Anyway, you see the stuff missing from the story and you almost wonder, oh, like, what is the point of reporting this outside of this is a crazy action that took place, and certainly if it bleeds, it leads. I wonder if this was all over British TV. But I don't know if if the UK has an Alex Jones, But if they do, he's saying, they're coming for our swords. They're coming for our swords, and we will not we will not relent, we will never lay down,

we will never surrender our swords. Yeah, okay, fair enough, and now it's a good thing. I don't have many listeners in England anymore because I just did it. Really, we both just did bad accents and we did. But you know, Bob's your uncle. Fair enough, all right? Anyways, Look, what do you what do you have to say about

the news rundown I gave you today? Joe? Altogether, I would have to say that I feel as though I didn't report anything of consequence or educate anybody too much except to give him an idea of a couple of things that are currently happening on the planet. What are your thoughts? I'm just glad it wasn't all politics, my friend. Fair that seems to be all anyone wants to talk about here in Redneckville. And I would apologize for that,

but I'm not going to because I mean it. Oh. Look, as long as you know what you mean, Joe, I say, then it's all good. And I'll tell you this. Joe has nothing to promote. He doesn't have a website, he doesn't even have a social media thing going on. So guess what the Ocelly effect is done. I gave you a news rundown for an hour regular Joe gave you regular reactions, and I don't know if I taught you a damn thing. But see if you can sort
