Welcome to the new manager podcast. I'm your host, Kim nickel. Hi, I do not know if you know this about me but I am. Also a meditation, teacher, in fact, when I was just beginning my career in Learning and Development, what I was teaching first was, I was teaching meditation, and also Fitness and yoga classes.
And the reason I mention this today is because I I recorded last year, a series of really short meditations designed for my students, and for people to use at work and this, there's an app called Simple habit. They have all of those tracks plussed, so many other meditation tracks, and I wanted to share with you one of the clips from that meditation series because it really becomes relevant for You as a new manager and getting into the headspace of how do I become
effective. Guiding people relating to people at getting all of this work done through the coordinated work of others and how to think of yourself. And this particular track is about the idea of perfection and how it is okay to not be perfect. One of the things I see a lot with my classes and then working with my students, there can be a lot of fear or even just worry and anxiety about. I hope I do this, right?
And very often, when you start managing others, you don't have a lot of guidance on how to do that. And so this next short meditation and little talk is really for you when you're in that place. Oh and one more other important Point, even though this is going to be a little meditation track, you do not need to be sitting on the floor. You do not need to have your eyes closed. It's a waking meditation, which means really you can just have your eyes open.
You could be on the bus. You could be going for a walk. You could be sitting at work with your Headphones on. It's not a formal seated practice. Okay, here we go. You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to know exactly what you're doing. You can learn as you go. And you're still being a good leader. Even if this is something that feels new to you, this is the process by which you grow and learn and develop these new skills in these new capacities
care about the work. Yes, but also care about the people care about who they are as humans. This doesn't mean that you need to know all about their lives that you don't have to be best friends and spend all kinds of time together. But it's about acknowledging and and having a sense of genuine Appreciation and care for who they are. As people that includes noticing their strengths. The quality is that they bring to the team to their work. That makes a positive
difference. It includes acknowledging. Hey not everyone is great at everything. Let's at least be clear about what our strengths and what our weaknesses are. It's okay to not be great at everything but know where you're not so strong. Wrong. And then, you can either, you know, manage around it. So that you're not putting a lot of time on those things or you can start to cultivate on learn
and grow and become better. It's up to you to decide and also to communicate that people want a reflection of themselves back to them. And by that I mean they want to know that they're seen that they're appreciated. They want to know how to improve. They want to know what is the path forward for them. Them guide them provide some support, some encouragement
acknowledge when they're doing. Well check in if you see them struggling, do it from a place of kindness from a desire to uplift to develop to elevate them, as well as the team and see what happens. Try this out, do it small. Let it be gentle. See what happens. If you know it's time to level F but you feel your perfectionism Self Doubt and uncertainty getting in the way then come work with me.
